Jersey Shore clinches playoff berth on final day of regular season

With an extra-inning victory over first-half division champions Hudson Valley on Sunday, the Class A Advanced Jersey Shore BlueClaws clinched the team's first playoff appearance since 2018, winning the second-half division title.

Key performers in the BlueClaws' clincher were righty hurler Jason Ruffcorn, who threw three innings of relief to earn the victory and third baseman Otto Kemp, notched three hits, a walk, two stolen bases and plated the game winning run in the 11th inning on a sacrifice fly. On top of that, Kemp, who turned 24-years-old on Saturday, made an absolute game-saving defensive play to help the club hold their lead in the bottom of the 11th frame.

One of Jersey Shore's most consistent performers all season long has been right-handed reliever Cam Wynne. The Phillies' 20th round draft pick in 2021 out of Nebraska. In 34 appearances, one start, the 24-year-old tallied a 1-1 record with one save, a 2.44 ERA and a .190 batting average against.

"I'm very satisfied with the season so far. We've got a great team here. Really fun. We've had a good run and we're trying to finish strong," Wynne shared recently about the team's chances to continue what had already been a successful season.

Phillies 2022 first round pick Justin Crawford has been another standout of late. The lefty hitting outfielder was promoted to the BlueClaws in August, after an impressive campaign with Class A Clearwater in which the 19-year-old sported a .344 average with three home runs, 60 RBI and 40 stolen bases in 69 contests. Since joining the BlueClaws, Crawford posted a .288 average with six doubles, two triples and seven steals through 18 games.

Despite having to leave the Threshers team that he had helped clinch a postseason berth in the first half of their season, Crawford had a positive outlook when coming north to New Jersey.

"I was really excited to know that I was going to be here with a great group of guys, especially right now, competing for a first-place spot, trying to get into the playoffs. It's been really good, and I've enjoyed it all," Crawford stated.

Game one of the best-of-three South Atlantic League North Division Series with be hosted by the BlueClaws on Tuesday, September 12th at 6:35 PM at ShoreTown Ballpark. Games two and three (if necessary) will take place in Wappingers Fall, NY, home of the Hudson Valley Renegades. The winner of the North Division match up would advance to face the winner of the Hickory vs. Greenville series.

At the age of 19, outfielder Justin Crawford has played his way into the conversation of being considered as one of baseball's top prospects.

The son of four-time MLB All-Star Carl Crawford, Justin has looked every bit as impressive as his position as the 17th overall draft selection last year would have most fans thinking he should be. He opened the season with Class A Clearwater where, in 69 games, he notched a .344/.399/.478 slash line. And since mid-August when he was promoted to Class A Advanced Jersey Shore, the younger Crawford has posted a .300/.364/.440 line. He's also stolen 44 bases in 52 attempts overall.

And while the BlueClaws enter the final week of the regular season 1/2 game out of first place in their division, I spoke with Justin Crawford about the team's hopes of making the postseason for the first time since 2018.

I also asked Justin about the similarities and differences between his skillset and his father's skillset along with his impressions of New Jersey thus far, among other things. Check out the media player below to hear that full interview.

RHP Pipkin headed to AFL after hot August

After completing what was easily the best month of his career, righty hurler Dominic Pipkin is ready to face the tough competition of the prominent Arizona Fall Leage.

Pipkin, who was the Phillies' 9th round draft selection in 2018, has had moderate success in his five years as a pro, posting a 4.93 ERA, a 7.6 K/9 mark and a .260 batting average against mostly at the lower levels on the minors.

After missing time this year with an unspecified ailment, the six-foot-four 170-pounder proved to be healthy as he dominated AA competition in nine appearances with the Reading Fightin Phils during August. Pipkin's impressive production resulted in a 1-0 record with a save and a 0.96 ERA while striking out eight and walking three in 9 1/3 innings.

The California native says his efforts to improve have helped him touch 100 MPH on the radar gun, while his fastball velocity is mostly around 96 MPH.

Pipkin's arsenal includes that improved fastball as well as a slider while his curveball and change up are mixed in less frequently than his earlier years in as a pro.

Reading's regular season schedule wraps up in a couple weeks on September 17th. Pipkin plans to take a non-baseball detour to attend his sister's wedding before heading off to join the Scottsdale Scorpions, as the AFL season is slated to get underway on October 2nd.

The Arizona Fall League regularly features many prospects that are on the verge of reaching the big leagues, so it will be a perfect opportunity for Pipkin to prove if he is one of those top performers and truly ready to compete at the top levels of the sport.

Pipkin is under contact with the Phillies through next season.

Phillies select slugging high schooler Miller in 1st round

Drafting 27th overall in the first round on Sunday night, the Phillies chose shortstop/third baseman Aidan Miller.

The 19-year-old sat out the 2023 season with a broken hamate bone, which required surgery. The absence from action resulted in Miller falling in the draft and analysts feel that the Phillies got a huge steal in this draft spot as a result.

Miller, a six-foot-two 205-pounder, bats right-handed and is touted as having great power potential.

A graduate of J.W. Mitchell High School in Florida, Miller is committed to play collegiate baseball at Arkansas.

Last year, Miller posted strong numbers on the showcase circuit and was named as the MVP of the All-American Game and won a home run derby title as part of the All-Star festivities in Los Angeles.

Aidan's brother Jackson Miller was drafted 65th overall by the Reds in 2020 out of J.W. Mitchell as well.

The Phils' next selection will take place at 98th overall, in the third round. The club does not have a second round pick, as they were forced to surrender that selection along with their fifth rounder after signing free agent Trea Turner.

Lefty hurler Taylor Lehman has proven to be a consistent performer and could be forcing himself to be considered as a big league option.

After bouncing back from elbow surgery last year, Lehman, a Penn State product, made 15 appearances (four starts) with Double-A Reading. In those outings, he notched a 1-1 record with a 3.74 ERA, a .210 opponents' batting average and a 10.4 K/9 mark.

Last off-season the six-foot-eight 240-pounder pitched for Surprise in the prestigious Arizona Fall League. In eight appearances there, all in relief, he sported a 6.17 ERA while striking out 16 and walking eight in 11 2/3 innings.

The 27-year-old opened the 2023 campaign with the Double-A Reading Fightins. Through seven relief appearances to open this season, Lehman has notched a 1-0 record with a 2.61 ERA, a .162 batting average against while striking out 10 and walking five in 10 1/3 innings pitched.

World Series Preview: Phillies vs. Astros

The Fall Classic is set to get underway on Friday with the Phillies opening on the road to take on the Astros in a best-of-seven series.

This year marks 75 years since the first time a World Series was televised and this year each game will be broadcast on the FOX television network. ESPN will have the radio broadcast and that feed can be streamed by using this link.

Game 1 Friday, 8:03pm Eastern....in Houston. RHP Aaron Nola (11-13, 3.25 ERA) vs. RHP Justin Verlander (18-4, 1.75 ERA). In 16 road starts during the regular season this year, Nola notched a 5-9 record with a 3.00 ERA. Nola has struck out 18 and walked three in 17 1/3 innings pitched this postseason. Earlier this month, Nola tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings at Houston. In 15 home starts during the regular season, Verlander sported a 10-1 record with a 1.64 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP. Verlander has a 5.68 ERA and has not recorded a win in seven career World Series starts. Verlander has 11 starts allowing one run or fewer in his postseason career.

Game 2 Saturday, 8:03pm Eastern....in Houston. RHP Zack Wheeler (12-7, 2.82 ERA) vs. LHP Framber Valdez (17-6, 2.82 ERA). Wheeler's home/road ERA splits this year during the regular season- 1.85/3.84. Wheeler has tallied a 1.78 ERA in four starts this postseason. Wheeler, who will be pitching on five days rest, has a 2.57 ERA this year in 11 starts when pitching on five days rest. Valdez, a 28-year-old, led the American League in innings pitched this year with 201 1/3. Valdez, an All-Star this year, was charged with two losses in Houston's losing effort in the World Series last year.

Game 3 Monday, 8:03pm Eastern....in Philadelphia. Pitching match ups have not been firmly announced, but the Phillies will likely go with Ranger Suarez in this spot with the Astros using Cristian Javier. Suarez sported a 4.27 ERA in 13 home starts during the regular season this year. The 25-year-old Javier has a 2.70 ERA in 13 career postseason starts.

Game 4 Tuesday, 8:03pm Eastern...in Philadelphia.

Game 5 (if necessary) Wednesday, 8:03pm Eastern....in Philadelphia.

Game 6 (if necessary) Friday Nov 3rd, 8:03pm Eastern...in Houston.

Game 7 (if necessary) Saturday Nov 4th, 8:03pm Eastern...in Houston.

The Phillies opened the season with a 22-29 record under manager Joe Girardi. The team moved on from him on June 3rd, replacing him with bench coach Rob Thomson, who went on to lead the Phils to a 65-46 record.

The Phillies' team batting average went from .245 under Girardi to .257 under Thomson. The staff ERA also saw an improvement, going from 4.05 under Girardi to 3.93 under Thomson.

Houston third baseman Alex Bregman, a two-time All-Star, is a .188 hitter with five homers and 15 RBI in 20 World Series games. Bregman has driven in seven runs in seven postseason games this year.

Slugger Yordan Alvarez is 7-for-35 (.200 avg) in seven postseason games this year. The 25-year-old left fielder/designated hitter drove in just one run in the Astros' four-game sweep of the Yankees in the American League Championship Series.

In the 2016 World Series as a member of the Cubs, Kyle Schwarber batted .412. Schwarber, the National League's reigning home run king, blasted three home runs in the National League Championship Series against the Padres.

Phillies designated hitter Bryce Harper is batting .391 through 11 postseason games this year. Harper posted a .923 OPS on the road during the regular season this year, compared to his .820 OPS at home.

Centerfielder Brandon Marsh is 4-for-7 (.571 avg) with a double against Cristian Javier in his career and has gone 3-for-9 (.333 avg) when facing Lance McCullers Jr. Marsh was 0-for-13 in the NLCS.

While the Phillies are returning to the championship round for the first time since 2009, the Astros are there for the second straight year and the fourth time in six years. Cheers and enjoy the show.

Series Preview: Phillies vs Braves, Best-of-five Division Series

The day after the Phillies signed their interim manager to a two-year contract extension, the team will open the best-of-five playoff series in National League East Division winning Atlanta.

On Monday the Phils made a clear vote of confidence when they gave skipper Rob Thomson the job for years to come. On Tuesday, the team sends 27-year-old Ranger Suarez to the mound to battle Braves ace Max Fried to open the National League Division Series. The Phils earned their way to the series by notching a pair of victories over the Cardinals in the Wild Card round this past weekend.

Details on pitching match ups and other key notes from this series are ahead...

Tuesday, 1:07pm Eastern...LHP Ranger Suarez (10-7 record, 3.65 ERA) vs. LHP Max Fried (14-7 record, 2.48 ERA). Suarez has a 2.81 ERA in six daytime outings this season. In five starts against the Braves this year, the Venezuela native, Suarez, tallied a 1-2 record with a 3.21 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. Atlanta shortstop Dansby Swanson is 2-18 (.111 avg.) in his career when facing Suarez. In 18 home starts this year, Fried recorded an 8-4 record with a 2.42 ERA. In 11 starts since the All-Star break, Fried has a 2.18 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. The Braves were 2-2 in games that Fried started against the Phillies this year.

Wednesday, 4:35pm Eastern...RHP Zack Wheeler (12-7, 2.82 ERA) vs. RHP Kyle Wright (21-5, 3.19 ERA). The 32-year-old Wheeler notched a 3.84 ERA in 13 road starts. In 24 career starts against Atlanta, Wheeler holds a 10-7 record with a .316 ERA. Wright has a 13-2 record with a 2.86 ERA in 18 home starts this year. Wright has a 3.82 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP in six career games against the Phillies. JT Realmuto is 2-for-9 in his career against Wright and both of those hits were home runs.

Friday, time to be determined...RHP Charlie Morton (9-6, 4.34 ERA) vs. Aaron Nola (11-13, 3.25 ERA). Morton, a former Phillie, had a 0-1 record with a 5.47 ERA in five starts against the Phillies this year. In 15 road starts this season, Morton posted a 3-5 record and a 5.72 ERA. Nola's 235 strike outs this season were a career-high mark for him. Nola has a 2.36 ERA over his last six starts. In 30 career starts against the Braves, Nola sports a 15-10 record with a 3.39 ERA.

Saturday and Monday, TBD (if necessary)...pitching match ups yet to be announced.

Phils third baseman Alec Bohm, who finished 9th in the NL in batting with a .280 average, posted a .342 average with four doubles, a homer and seven RBI in 19 games against the Braves this season.

This year Realmuto became the second MLB catcher, along with Ivan Rodriguez, to hit at least 20 home runs and swipe at least 20 bases in the same season. In 60 games since the All-Star break, Realmuto posted a slash line of .307/.367/.583.

Bryce Harper batted .244 at home, while he posted a .320 average on the road this season. The Phils' designated hitter, Harper, has hit more home runs in his career against the Braves (39) than he has against any other team. With runners in scoring position this year, Harper produced a .354/.448/.734 slash line.

Outfielder Kyle Schwarber's National League best 46 home runs were the most ever hit by a Phillies' outfielder in one season. In 19 games against Atlanta this year, the lefty slugger recorded an unimpressive .127, but he did mash six of his home runs against the Braves.

In 19 games against the Phillies this season, Atlanta third baseman Austin Riley recorded a .351 average with nine double, a home run and four RBI. Riley's .964 OPS at home this year is considerably higher than his .792 mark on the road.

Catcher Travis D'Arnaud is a .258 hitter with 12 homers and 44 RBI in 95 games against the Phillies. D'arnaud was a supplemental first round draft selection by the Phils 15 years ago. They later traded him away in a deal that made Roy Halladay a Phillie.

The Braves ranked 2nd in the National League with 789 runs scored during the regular season. The Phillies ranked 5th in the league with 747 runs scored.

PhoulBallz Interview: Talking with OF Prospect Baron Radcliff

Lefty batting outfielder Baron Radcliff has been on a roll of late for the Class A Advanced Jersey Shore BlueClaws. In seven August contests thus far, the 23-year-old is batting .375 with a home run, nine RBI and four walks.

The son of former pro baseball player Vic Radcliff and D1 basketball standout Nikki Keyton Radcliff, Baron was the Phillies' 5th round draft selection out of Georgia Tech in 2020.

Listed at six-feet-four, 228 pounds Radcliff projects as a power hitter and at the plate he resembles a familiar Phillies slugger, namely Ryan Howard.

Recently, I spoke with Baron about his approach at the dish, his offensive battles, learning from his parents, hobbies and plenty more. - Your pose when you step to the plate, how often do you hear about who that reminds people of?

I hear it all the time, being that I was drafted by the Phillies and Ryan Howard is a Philly legend. It was something I added to my pre-pitch in college as a way to be relaxed during that small window that pitchers get their signs from the catcher.

- The first time I saw you play I thought to myself that I couldn't wait to ask you about it. Was it something you witnessed and thought it would work for you, or was it just added without that?

I got it directly from the man himself! I always liked the way it looked, so when I added it to my own repertoire, I was like, "Yep, this fits me.

- Sweet!! Have you ever had the chance to speak with him? I know certain players are around spring training and camps, but I don't think I have heard of him being one of those guys.

I wish, but no I haven’t had the opportunity to talk to him. Definitely something I want to do in the future.

- With two athletes for parents, are they helpful with your approach or mindsets as you competed in college and professionally?

My parents have always helped me with trying to keep the right competitive mindset. I’ve struggled a lot with self-confidence here and there as far as overthinking, so they’ve done a lot to combat that.

- The self-doubt you mentioned...are there specific tricks you can share to help turn things around? Any frame of mind adjustments that could be used by others?

For me, it’s just been remembering how far I’ve come, and how I used to pray to be in the position I am now so just to take advantage of the opportunity. Also, trying to remember that at the end of the day it’s a game, and is meant to be fun.

Phillies select Justin Crawford with 1st round draft pick

With the 17th overall selection in the 2022 MLB amateur draft, the Phillies chose high school outfielder Justin Crawford.

The 18-year-old is the son of four-time big league All-Star Carl Crawford.

Listed at six-feet-three, 175-pound, Justin Crawford is a lefty batting outfielder, who projects as a top-of-the order speedster. A graduate of well renowned Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, NV, the talented prospect is committed to play collegiate baseball at Louisianna State.

Crawford was ranked as the top high school player in Nevada and placed among the top three outfielders in the country.

The elder Crawford led the American League in stolen bases four times in his career and exceed 45 steals in a season seven times, tallying 480 big league steals. The younger Crawford jokes that he is faster than his dad.

Big time speed with excellent defense, solid barrel control and a projectable frame are what make this the right pick for the Phillies.

Not to be forgotten is the family ties with former Phillies shortstop J.P. Crawford, another first round selection of the organization (16th overall, 2013). J.P., who was traded by the Phillies to Seattle in a deal that brought Jean Segura to Philadelphia, is a cousin to Carl.

The Phils do not have a second round pick in this year's draft, as they lost that with the signing of Nick Castellanos prior to the 2022 season. They'll select again with the 93rd overall pick in the third round.

Bubby Rossman's long awaited MLB debut

Eight years after he initially signed a professional contract with the Dodgers and a five-year stretch playing away from affiliated ball, Bubby Rossman became a major leaguer on Wednesday.

Added as a substitute for pitcher Kyle Gibson, who is restricted from travel to Canada for the Phillies' series in Toronto, due to his medical inability to be vaccinated from COVID-19, Rossman took the mound for the first time in the majors.

Rossman, who was a 22nd round draft selection in 2014 had pitched in 200 professional games before his one-inning outing in the Phillies' 8-2 loss to the Blue Jays.

In 27 appearances with Double-A Reading this year, the 30-year-old right-hander has performed well, tallying a 2-2 record with a save, a 3.32 ERA and a .200 batting average against.

2022 Top Phillies Prospects Countdown: #13 OF Ethan Wilson

Taken with the Phillies' second round draft pick (49th overall) last year, outfielder Ethan Wilson has landed among the top prospects in the organization.

A co-freshman of the year in 2019, with South Alabama, Wilson has been on the radar of some big league teams for quite a while. In his junior season last year, Wilson batted .313 with seven home runs and 30 RBI. When his collegiate season was through, the lefty hitter quickly debuted in the minors.

In 30 games with Class A Clearwater last year, Wilson tallied a .215 average with three homers, 17 RBI and two steals.

Listed at six-foot-one, 210-pounds, Wilson opened the 2022 campaign with Class A Advanced Jersey Shore. The 22-year-old has been slow to start offensively, but confidence and poise are not a problem for this strong, promising individual.

On the base paths, Wilson is quick and can contribute with his feet. Defensively, the Alabama native will likely play left or right field moving forward.

Possessing an ability to go with pitches and drive the ball to varying fields, the hitting should come along for Wilson. With strong bat speed and a good reserve of power, he remains a high ceiling performer despite a cold emergence initially in the minors.

2022 Phillies Top Prospects Countdown: #14 OF Yhoswar Garcia

Righty hitting outfielder Yhoswar Garcia is a Phillies prospect on the rise.

Reportedly signed in 2020 for a $2.5 million bonus, the six-foot tall 150-pounder has played state side in Florida.

Debuting as a pro in Class A Clearwater last summer, Garcia notched a .229/.299/.271 slash line with 11 steals through 18 contests.

Repeating the same level to open this season, Garcia has produced improved offensive numbers in the early going.

Equipped with plus speed, Garcia is a threat to swipe a bag anytime he reaches base. Through 14 games with the Threshers this season, the 20-year-old has pilfered 13 bases.

Exceptionally skilled in the field, the Venezuelan is said to tout considerable range and a is as solid in centerfield as you can find at his level.

Playing every day on a full-season club is just what a talented, athletic youngster with the skillset Garcia possesses will benefit most from.

2022 Phillies Top Prospects Countdown: #15 Infielder Kendall Simmons

An All-Star in 2019 with the short-season Class-A Williamsport Crosscutters, Kendall Simmons is one of the Phillies' most promising prospects.

Simmons, an outstanding and multi-positional infielder, was the Phillies' 6th round draft pick in 2018.

That year, he made his professional debut in the Rookie level Gulf Coast League, posting a .234 average with three homers and 11 RBI in 32 games.

The right-handed batter tallied a .234 batting average with 12 homers, 34 RBI and five stolen bases in 51 games with Williamsport in 2019.

In the 2020-2021 off-season, Simmons played in the Australian Baseball League, making up for some of the time missed due to the cancelled 2020 season. In 21 games with Adelaide, he notched a .172 batting average with a home run, seven RBI and three steals.

Last year, Simmons played primarily with Class A Clearwater. With the Threshers, he recorded a .226/.321/.460 slash line in 41 games.

Listed at six-feet-two, 180 pounds, strength and athleticism are key traits that stand out for the Georgia native, Simmons. He's got some sneaky power that developmental staff is high on.

He'll want to work on making better contact, as his strike out rate thus far as a pro hasn't been exemplary.

Primarily a shortstop, Simmons has also played second base and third base in the Phils system. While he may project as more of a third baseman than a shortstop, the versatility is certainly something that could be beneficial to the player and the organization down the road.

Simmons opened 2022 back with Clearwater, but a promotion to Class A Advanced Jersey Shore shouldn't be far off for the 22-year-old.

Acquired this spring in a deal that sent outfielder Adam Haseley to the White Sox, righty pitcher McKinley Moore joined the Phillies organization and quickly garnered attention as a promising relief option for the future.

Listed at six-feet-six, 225-pounds, Moore has an imposing, sluggerish frame.

A 14th round draft selection by the Chi Sox in 2019 out of Arkansas-Little Rock, Moore signed quickly and made his minor league debut that same year. In 22 relief appearances in Rookie ball, Moore collected a 4.84 ERA, a .264 batting average against and three saves.

In 2021, he split his season with Class A Kannapolis and Class A Advanced Winston Salem. In 37 combined appearances, Moore tallied a 2-2 record with nine saves, a 4.20 ERA and a .234 batting average against.

He also held his own in the prestigious Arizona Fall League last year, where he posted a 4.22 ERA while striking out nine and walking five in 10 2/3 innings pitched.

Considered as a flame thrower, with a fastball that regularly clocks in the mid-to-upper 90's, he also sports a slider that helps him notch a lot of swings and misses. Averaging a 12.3 K/9 mark in his professional career to date, Moore shows potential as a strong back-end reliever.

Control is where the 23-year-old requires the most refinement, as he has walked a considerable amount of batters (5.6 per nine innings) since turning pro.

The Phillies see a future set up man in Moore, if he can continue to take strides in the command department.

Having opened she 2022 campaign with Double-A Reading, Moore, who exudes confidence on the hill, should get chances there to show what he's made of in key spots.

2022 Phillies Top Prospects Countdown: #17 LHP Kyle Dohy

Several months removed from his big league debut, Kyle Dohy hopes to build on a strong 2021 campaign and return to the top level of the sport to stay.

A 16th round draft selection out of Citrus Community College in 2017, Dohy was quickly signed by the Phils and began his professional career that year in the Class A short-season New York-Penn League.

In 13 appearances with Williamsport that year, as a 20-year-old, Dohy posted a 2-1 record with a 3.60 ERA and a .182 batting average against in 13 appearances. Additionally, he would strike out 22 and walk 20 in 20 innings.

In 2018, Dohy really stood out, pitching at three levels, and began to draw plenty of attention. In 24 appearances with Class A Lakewood, Dohy looked nearly untouchable, recording a 3-3 record with seven saves, a 0.80 ERA, a .144 batting average against and an outstanding 16.8 K/9 mark while the BB/9 rate looked much better at 4.5.

Dohy earned a promotion to Class A Advanced Clearwater at the Sally League's All-Star break in June. His brief stint there was just as successful as the first half of the season had been, as he tallied a 2-1 record with a pair of saves and a 1.64 ERA, striking out 18 and walking three in 11 innings over seven appearances for the Threshers.

The Phillies then promoted the youngster once more and he looked a bit more human out of the bullpen with Double-A Reading for the remainder of the season. In 18 games Dohy sported a 2-5 record with a save, a 5.56 ERA and a .165 batting average against. He would strike out 30 and walk 22 over 22 2/3 innings pitched in the Eastern League.

In 2019, Dohy opened the campaign back in Double-A and appeared to have mastered that level. In six games, he collected a 1-0 record with two saves, a 0.82 ERA, a .059 batting average against and stuck out 22 while walking five in 11 innings of work. He'd move to Triple-A Lehigh Valley before April was through.

As a member of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Dohy posted a 6-5 record with a save, a 6.19 ERA, a .253 batting average against while striking out 83 and walking 54 in 56 2/3 innings over 41 appearances.

In 2020, the California native opened spring training with the big league team. Prior to the sport's stoppage due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Dohy appeared in three games, allowing two earned runs, striking out three batters, walking none and hitting one batter in three innings of work.

Last year, Dohy spent time with Reading and Lehigh Valley, tallying a 4-0 record with a pair of saves, a 2.95 ERA, a .144 batting average against and a 13.7 K/9 mark in 32 combined appearances.

In spring training action this year, Dohy appeared in three games without allowing a run.

The pitch repertoire for Dohy, who is listed at six-feet-two, 202 pounds, includes a trio of offerings with plus potential. He features a mid-90's fastball that has touched up to 97 MPH, a premier slider that has a lot of movement and a change up that has been a work in progress at times.

Command has been a area of concern for the 25-year-old, as he averages 6.8 BB/9 in the minors. It's part of his games that has been a focus for coaches and instructors, as they work with the pitcher to get his mechanics and delivery to be as consistent as possible.

Dohy opened the 2022 season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley once more as he tries to earn his way back to the big leagues with the team that re-signed him as a free agent over the previous off-season.

Morales could climb fast after move to 'pen

READING, PA- A new role could have Francisco Morales on the fast track to the Phillies' bullpen.

After experiencing limited success last year primarily as a starter, the organization has decided to utilize the 22-year-old strictly as a reliever moving forward.

Signed by the Phils in 2016 at the age of 16 for a reported $900,000, the Venezuela native has spent roughly six years showing flashes of the hurler that he could be. The new assignment could finally be the factor that makes it happen.

According to Double-A Reading manager Shawn Williams, the talented Venezuelan is excited for the refined duties.

"I think he's always wanted to be a reliever," Williams shared. "He loves it. He's looking forward to it. He had a great spring training as a reliever, closing (and as) a late inning guy."

In 22 appearances (20 starts) last year with Reading, the six-foot-four 185-pounder notched a 4-13 record with a 6.94 ERA, a .240 batting average against and an 11.9 K/9 mark. His 6.5 BB/9 with the Fightin Phils were a big source of concern though.

He closed out the 2021 campaign with two starts for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, going 0-1 while allowing four earned runs, striking out seven, walking seven and hitting three batters in 8 2/3 innings.

Concerns with the progress on his change up likely made the decision to limit his repertoire to just his blazing fastball and his exceptional slider an easy one. Of course, pitchers with a two-pitch menu are best suited for relief work.

From the sound of things, Morales has impressed the club and he could ascend swiftly.

"Things can happen quick. They could go (to the big leagues) straight from here. Things have happened the past couple years, like (Matt) Vierling, he wasn't in (Triple-A) Lehigh (Valley) very long or I know when we had J.D. Hammer here, he went to Lehigh for one outing and then he was in the big leagues. That's what's so awesome about being here in Double-A, things happen quickly," Williams said.

Stopping short of comparing the two individuals, Williams asserted that the switch for Morales reminded him of the one that Phillies hurler Seranthony Dominguez made heading into the 2018 season that landed him in the majors before the second week of May that year.

"Once Seranthony went to the 'pen, that was pretty darn good too," Williams stated. "We'll see. He's headed in the right direction, and he had a great spring training."

His duties with Reading are expected to primarily be late inning or high-pressure spots. The Reading skipper also thinks Morales could go multiple innings at times.

The outlook is promising, as the Phillies want to help the right-hander reach his potential.

"It could be really special." Williams professed.

Reading opens its season on Friday, as they host the Yankees affiliate Somerset at 6:45 PM.

2022 Phillies Top Prospects Countdown: #18 SS/2B Casey Martin

A third round draft pick in 2020, Arkansas junior Casey Martin was quickly signed by the Phillies and consideration as one of the organization's top infield prospects quickly began. The organization's belief in his ceiling is likely evident in the signing bonus he got, which was reportedly $1.3 million, considerably more than slot money dictated by his 87th overall draft position ($685K).

The righty hitting Martin tallied a .311/.393/.545 slash line with 30 homers, 24 steals and 112 RBI in 143 games through his college career as a Razorback. Reports had him falling in the draft as a result of an injury to the hamate bone in his left hand prior to his 2020 season. Prior to a procedure to repair the ailment, Baseball America projected Martin as a top ten draft pick.

In 15 games in 2020 primarily as the Arkansas clean up hitter, before the season was halted due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Martin notched a .271 batting average with a pair of home runs, 10 RBI along with six stolen bases.

A super talent, Martin was a collegiate freshman All-American in 2018 and was a unanimous pre-season All-American prior to his junior season.

In 2021, Martin opened the regular season with Class A Clearwater. In 69 games there, he posted a .223 average with 17 doubles, six homers, 35 RBI and 15 stolen bases. Following a promotion to Class A Advanced Jersey Shore, Martin struggled offensively, sporting a .136/.232/.200 slash line in 29 games.

It was reported that Martin was battling an ankle ailment last year, which hindered his production.

Martin, listed at five-feet-11, 175-pounds in an Arkansas native.

He's projected as a guy that could change positions and land as a second baseman or a center fielder as he moves through the professional ranks. Martin previously played third base as a freshman in college. In the minors last year, he played 62 games as a shortstop and 35 games at second base.

Described as a player that's "full of tools", it's possible that the 22-year-old should likely return to Jersey Shore to open the 2022 campaign, as he still has something to prove at that level.

2022 Phillies Top Prospects Countdown: #19 LHP Cristopher Sanchez

Lefty pitcher Cristopher Sanchez looks to be a possible contributor for the Phillies big league team in the near future.

The Phils sent infielder Curtis Mead to the Rays in a November 2019 trade in exchange for the promising Dominican Republic native.

Signed for a reported $65,000 by Tampa Bay in 2013 at age of 16, Sanchez would go on to make his professional debut in the Dominican Summer League the following year. In 13 appearances that season, he notched a 7.77 ERA. The Rays would have him repeat the league twice. In 41 total appearances there, Sanchez tallied an 8-7 record with a 4.15 ERA, 6.1 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9.

In 2017 Sanchez split time between starting and relieving in the Rookie level Appalachian League. With Princeton, he posted some dismal numbers, with a 1-6 record with a 10.01 ERA and a .353 batting average against.

In 2018, he opened the year back in extended spring training and went the short-season route with Princeton once more. Pitching exclusively as a starter at that point, as a 21-year-old, Sanchez looked much improved, sporting a 3-2 record with a 4.60 ERA over 10 outings. The Rays would promote him to wrap up the season and he joined Hudson Valley of the New York-Penn League. In two regular season starts, he went 1-0 with a 4.00 ERA. Overall that season, Sanchez collected a .302 BAA, a 7.8 K/9 mark along with a 4.7 BB/9.

In 2019 Sanchez played full-season ball for the first time. He opened the campaign with Class A Bowling Green, where he again split time as a reliever and a starter. In 11 games (four starts), he had a 3-1 record with two saves, a 2.01 ERA, a .190 batting average against and a 0.97 WHIP. He would earn a promotion to Class A Advanced Charlotte and posted a 1-0 record, a 1.85 ERA, a .231 batting average against, as well as a 1.21 WHIP in 12 appearances (six starts). He ended the season with an appearance at Triple-A Durham. Overall, in 24 games, Sanchez recorded an 8.7 K/9 mark and a 3.1 BB/9 mark.

His splits that year did not clearly favor one role over the other, as with Bowling Green he tallied a 0.83 ERA out of the bullpen and a 3.38 mark as a starter. Then with Charlotte his ERA was just about a full run better in the rotation (1.54 ERA as a starter, 2.53 ERA in relief).

Sanchez played the following off-season in the Dominican Winter League for the Toros. He made just five relief appearances, none of which came after he was acquired by the Phillies.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Sanchez pitched in a pair of Phillies spring training games, allowing three earned runs over 1 1/3 innings while striking out three and uncorking two wild pitches.

The following off-season, Sanchez appeared twice with the Toros with no noteworthy statistics to mention.

In 2021, he pitched with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. As a member of the IronPigs, Sanchez posted a 5-6 record with 4.68 ERA, a .211 batting average against as well as an 11.0 K/9 mark in 19 games (17 as a starter).

He was called up to the majors and optioned back and forth as was needed throughout the season as well. Overall, in seven games (one as a starter), Sanchez notched a 1-0 record with a 4.97 ERA and he struck out 13 batters in 12 2/3 innings of work.

A valued talent, Sanchez was somewhat buried in a Rays farm system that was deep with well touted arms. Tampa Bay feared Sanchez could be lost at the Winter Meetings' Rule 5 Draft, so trading him made more sense. Sanchez, listed at six-foot-one 165-pounds, quickly ranked among the top prospects for his new organization.

He touts an exciting skill set highlighted by fastball velocity that resides in the mid-to-high 90's and features movement. He also has a change up and a slider in his repertoire that he has improved on each year.

Consistency has been a key for Sanchez in making improvements. Repeating his delivery much more routinely, the result was, of course, more strikes. The Phillies' needs may determine which role Sanchez fills going forward.

Sanchez is on the Phillies' 40-man roster and is getting work in Spring Training with the big league team. It is possible he could open the regular season with the Phillies. If there isn't room for him there when camp breaks, he would be assigned to Triple-A once more where he'll stay ready for the first opening back in the majors.

2022 Phillies Top Prospects Countdown: #20 SS/2B Luis Garcia

Talented 21-year-old infielder Luis Garcia remains worthy of being regarded as one of the Phillies' top prospects.

After the team signed Garcia for a reported $2.5 million (second highest international signing in Phils history) in July of 2017, Garcia participated in the Florida Instructional League as a 16-year-old later that year.

The Dominican Republic native would make his official professional debut in 2018. In the short-season Rookie level Gulf Coast League, Garcia led the league in batting average with a .369 mark. Additionally, he posted a .433 on-base percentage with an impressive .921 OPS.

The five-foot-11 175-pounder was named to the GCL’s post-season All-Star roster and was rated by Baseball America as the best prospect in the GCL at the time he played there.

In 2019 Garcia played the entire season with Class A Lakewood at the age of 18. There, he would struggle considerably at the plate. In 127 games he tallied a .186 batting average with 14 doubles, three triples, four home runs and 36 RBI.

The cancelled 2020 season resulted in Garcia missing a year of development, though he did participate in the Fall Instructional League. He also stayed busy working out in his native DR and added some upper body muscle tone during his down time.

Additional strength was evident last year for the switch-hitter, as he displayed increased power. Combined at Class A Clearwater and Class A Advanced Jersey Shore, Garcia more than doubled his career home run total, mashing 13 round-trippers. In 103 total contests in 2021, he notched a .243 average with a .353 OBP, 15 stolen bases and 50 RBI.

Defensively, Garcia possesses an accurate, plus arm, solid range and quick feet. A smooth fielder, he played the majority of the time as a shortstop last year but also played 34 games at second base.

At the plate, Garcia displays a mature approach with remarkable bat speed. He also showed improvements with his walk rate and strike out rate last season.

Garcia is quick and could become a steady stolen base threat. His 71% success rate with steal attempts in 2021 should be on the rise as he reaches higher levels of the sport.

Phils developmental coaches have noticed that Garcia, even at a young age, stands out as a leader, primarily among his fellow Latin players.

The ceiling for the man known as "El Flow" seems promising as he stands out as a bright, exciting youngster that Phillies fans should keep their eyes on. Look for Garcia to see action at the Double-A level this coming season.

2022 Phillies Top Prospects Countdown: #21 SS Jamari Baylor

A third round draft selection by the Phillies in 2019 out of Benedictine Prep, a military school in Virginia, shortstop Jamari Baylor signed his first pro contract for a reported $675,000 and put his significant tools on display during his brief initial minor league stint.

In four games in the rookie level Gulf Coast League, five-foot-11 190-pounder sported a .273 average with a pair of doubles. He was forced out action swiftly after his pro debut due to a reported hamstring injury.

After the 2020 season was cancelled due to the global pandemic, Baylor trained at Driveline Baseball and got some game action at Fall Instructs in Florida during that off-season as well.

In 2021, Baylor was back in action and absolutely torched Rookie level Florida Complex League competition. In 25 contests, he boasted an outstanding 1.020 OPS with 16 RBI and 11 stolen bases.

Shortly after he turned 21 years old in late August, Baylor was promoted to Class A Clearwater to wrap up the regular season. After debuting for the Threshers with a 3-for-4, three RBI game, he went just 9-for-52 (.173 avg.) the rest of the way.

With a loose approach at the plate, Baylor generates plenty of bat speed and squares up well on pitches. Many project the right-handed hitter to develop more of a power stroke as he advances in his career.

A plus runner, Baylor is a stolen base threat and should trouble opposing batteries at any level.

Brandishing a plus arm, Baylor has quick feet and solid range. He could stick at shortstop as he continues his professional career.

Look for more full-season ball for Baylor to open the 2022 campaign. It's likely he would open the season in Clearwater, with unfinished business at that level, based on his statistics last season.

Baylor's certainly a significant distance from reaching the big leagues, but if he progresses at a pace similar to how he projects, it won't be long before he factors into the team's future plans.

2022 Phillies Top Prospects Countdown #22 1B/OF Jordan Viars

A third round draft selection by the Phillies in 2021, high schooler Jordan Viars has drawn much attention as a promising prospect. '

Equipped with raw power and said to have a very high offensive ceiling, the Texas native was reported be multiple organizations' favorite high school batter heading into last year's draft.

Opening his professional career in the Florida Complex League in 2021 after he was the 84th overall draft pick, Viars batted .255 with three home runs, 18 RBI and a pair of stolen bases. He also walked a bunch (17.2% walk rate), which was very impressive.

Defensively, Viars split his time in the minors between left field and first base. With a strong arm, he could find himself getting time in right field as he advances, but first base could be a more likely option for where he lands long term.

Viars has one of those "projectable" frames that baseball types love. At six-feet-four, 215 pounds, the 18-year-old has wide shoulders, long arms with loads of time to add muscle and strength.

Speed may not be a boast-worthy aspect of Viars' game, but he shouldn't be a detriment to his team on the bases either.

Committed to play college ball for Arkansas, the Phillies threw an above slot signing bonus of $747,500 at Viars to entice the young slugger to opt for the minors over the land of higher learning.

It may not be farfetched to see Viars on a full-season club this year. Class A is on the horizon for this budding talent.

2022 Phillies Top Prospect Countdown: #23 LHP Ethan Lindow

Lefty pitcher Ethan Lindow stood out so much among Phillies pitching prospects in 2019 that he was honored with the Paul Owens Award, which is bestowed annually upon the top position player and the top hurler from the organization's minor league affiliates.

Selected in the 5th round of the 2017 draft out of high school in Georgia, Lindow would sign for a reported $500,000 and swiftly began his professional career.

In the Rookie level Gulf Coast League, Lindow started eight contests, posting a 2-2 record with a 4.55 ERA and a .241 batting average against while striking out 34 and walking 12 batters in 27 2/3 innings pitched. He participated that year in the Florida Instructional League as well.

In 2018 Lindow opened the campaign in extended spring training, later having a remarkable campaign with the Class A short-season Williamsport Crosscutters. In 13 starts, the six-foot-three 180-pounder posted a 3-2 record with a 2.19 ERA, a .227 batting average against along with an 8.1 K/9 mark. For his efforts with the 'Cutters, he was honored by Baseball America as a short-season All-Star.

The following year Lindow really made his mark with the Class A Lakewood BlueClaws. In 23 appearances (13 starts), he collected a 5-2 record with a 2.66 ERA, a .208 batting average against, a 0.98 WHIP and a 9.9 K/9 mark.

By late in the season, the Phillies promoted Lindow to Class A Advanced Clearwater. With the Threshers, he made three starts, going winless with a 1.69 ERA, a .274 batting average against and averaging a strikeout per inning pitched.

Following the cancelled 2020 season, Lindow found himself at the Double-A level where he posted a 0-2 record and an ERA of 6.11 in six games (five starts).

Soon the southpaw was demoted back to the BlueClaws, who, after the minor leagues were reorganized, are now in a Class A Advanced league. In 12 appearances (10 starts), Lindow tallied a 3-6 record with a 3.21 ERA, a .260 batting average against and a 1.13 WHIP.

He's got some intangibles that developmental personnel like to see. Coaches admire Lindow's tendency to stand out as a leader among his peers. He also pitches like a polished, more mature hurler. This is a quality that can be attributed to working with a well-known big leaguer, namely Tom Glavine, whose son was a travel ball teammate of Lindow. The Hall of Famer would mentor Lindow and helped him develop insight on the game he would not have otherwise had.

Described as a serious competitor, Lindow has a terrific feel for the strike zone and attacks the opposition with his arsenal. The 22=3-year-old's repertoire includes a fastball that most often resides in the low-90's, a very good curve ball, a cutter and a top notch change up.

The key quality that has people raving about Lindow and pointing toward him as a guy that could become special is his command. With consistency like his, Lindow's ceiling is as a member of a big league starting rotation.

Lidow should get another chance to master the Double-A level this year and could possibly see some action in big league spring training match ups.

Venezuelan born right-hander Cristian Hernandez has begun to earn recognition as one of the Phillies most promising pitching prospects.

Signed as a 16-year-old in 2017 for a reported $120,000, Hernandez got his professional career started the following summer as a starter for the Phillies' Red Dominican Summer League club. There, in 13 starts, Hernandez tallied a 2-3 record with 2.57 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP as well as a 7.0 K/9 mark.

An injury sidelined Hernandez in 2019 and the 2020 season was cancelled due to the global pandemic.

In 2021, Hernandez saw his first regular season action in the United States, starting his season in Florida Complex League. After two appearances there, the six-foot-three 185-pounder was promoted to the Class A Clearwater Threshers. In 20 combined outings (17 starts), Hernandez notched a 2-7 record with a 3.57 ERA, a .228 batting average against and an 11.2 K/9 mark.

Projectability is something that baseball folks like about Hernandez. His size, consistent mechanics along with a fastball that continues to improve are key factors there. Velocity that reaches 97 MPH along with a nice, sweeping slider and a change up that he is looking to refine make up the youngsters repertoire.

His role in the future could hang on whether or not the Phillies' developmental staff feels the change up sticks as a formidable offering. A two-pitch menu, of course, would be better suited for a reliever.

Look for Hernandez to open the 2022 campaign with Class A Advanced Jersey Shore, with a path to Double-A on the horizon, if he can continue to shine as he did last year.
