January Photo Walk

Right now, I am looking out my window and all I can see are delicate snowflakes whizzing by my window creating piles of marshmallow white fluff in my backyard. If you live anywhere near Topeka, Kansas this will not be a surprising sight. For weeks, the sun has been obscured by clouds offering various forms of precipitation. However, last Saturday, we had a clear day and it struck me and my fellow photographer, Jonas of Jonas Wright Photography, as the perfect time to take advantage of the sunshine with a photowalk.

Here are a few of those shots to remind you of that clear, sunny day:

There are tons of things to be thankful for on Thanksgiving- the turkey, the pie, friends and family all gathered together. Well, this Thanksgiving I had one more fantastic thing to be thankful for: my cousin, Kayla let me do a mini-photo shoot with her. I’m gonna be honest, this girl can pose. Two seconds in front of my lens, and she had it down! We had a ton of fun running around the block in little Waverly, Ks. Thanks for being a great model, Kayla!

Lynn & Glen

As you might remember from my last post, I have had the amazing opportunity to be a second shooter for Jaclyn from Jaclyn Marie Photography on several weddings she’s done. On October 24th, we headed to Lawrence for Lynn and Glen’s wedding. You get extra points for remembering them from the engagement shoot we did during the summer!

I can’t say enough good things about this couple. It’s amazing when you get to witness two people who are truly in love and loved by all those around them. They are so full of humor and charm that their photos really say it all!

Lynn’s dress was gorgeous and she picked the perfect palette for all the details of the wedding- fall colors!

They were blessed with beautiful weather!

Jaclyn located a gorgeous field of wildflowers, so of course, we had to go there!

Their reception was held in this incredible barn in Lawrence. They had hay rides and a campfire…

It was a great time!

Although I know she’s going to be mad at me for posting so many photos of her, I just have to tell you about my friend and mentor, Jaclyn. When Carlos and I got engaged in 2007, I knew nothing about photography. I just knew that it was important and I wanted great photos. We did quite a bit of looking before we miraculously found Jaclyn, but ever since we hired her for our wedding, I have been more and more impressed with her.

Not only is Jaclyn a great photographer, she’s a wonderful teacher. She took me under her wing and answered a million of my questions. She has given me the opportunity to shoot with her at weddings and learn from her expertise. (Look out for a second shooter post coming soon!) On top of all that, she has become my friend and someone I truly admire.

So, in the spirit of giving thanks, I wanted to share this amazing photographer with you all. She currently does portraits and weddings in the Wichita area. Please check out her beautiful website and blog, www.jaclynmariephoto.com!

I ♥ Faces- Tooshies!

Another weekly contest over at I ♥ faces! I had such a great time looking at all the entries last week, that I thought I would enter again this week! The theme this week is an interesting one: Tooshies! I have really only taken one tooshie picture ever, but it’s a pretty good tooshie. Plus, I figured if I’m gonna post it somewhere more public than my blog, I had better do it while my niece, Julie, is still young enough not to be mortified.

I just have one disclaimer: It’s just mud! Without further ado, Julie’s tooshie:

It’s Thanksgiving! I wish you and yours a wonderful holiday filled with many things to be thankful for!

In the spirit of the season, I’m gonna list my top five things I’m thankful for today (and most every day!):

1. My wonderful husband, Carlos

2. My friends and family (near and far!)

3. The joy I experience from doing what I love

4. The beauty that can be found almost anywhere, depending on how you look

5. My pajama pants- I love them!

Amy, Brian, and Madison

In early November, I was lucky enough to do a family portrait session with Amy, Brian, and Madison. We were being threatened by some rainclouds the whole time, but they smiled like it was 80 degrees and sunny! They let me take them all sorts of places and didn’t even laugh when I asked them to pose in front of a car wash!

Isn’t Amy gorgeous?

They brought along Madison’s pink guitar. Isn’t it the coolest thing ever?

We found a field and had some fun!

Madison wanted to keep doing this one over and over!

This is a family that knows how to strike a pose!

We took advantage of the fall colors!

Madison was on top of things! She helped me pick a lot of the poses we used!

That’s a good-lookin’ family!

You can just tell they adore each other!

I’m not sure what they told her, but it must have been hilarious!

I ♥ Faces- Sun Flare

I’ve got this sinus thing that’s making sleep impossible. So tonight, I’ve baked a cake, made banana bread, prepped a few blog posts for the coming holiday, and decided to enter a contest. The contest is on this blog I’ve been reading called I ♥ Faces, where they have a weekly contest. This week the contest is sun flare and since I had a couple great photos to choose from I decided that this would be the week I enter.

I decided to use this photo of Katie because I love how happy/excited/confident she is. She’s about to go on stage at the Blues Bash, but she’s not nervous at all!

March & Rally

The second event I attended as a volunteer photographer for the Week Without Violence was the March & Rally that took place on Wednesday, October 21st. People from all walks of life came out to show their support to this worthy cause. They walked and shouted and hoisted their signs in remembrance of past victims and in the hope of preventing violent crimes from occurring in the future.

At the end of their long walk, they rallied and listened to the tragic story of Curt and Christie Brungardt, who spoke about the loss of their daughter, Jana, and the 1,100+ acts of kindness that have been inspired since her murder. Find out more about their cause at www.1100torches.org.

Chalk at the Capitol

Last week, I was proud to be a volunteer photographer at a couple of the YWCA’s Week Without Violence Events. The first, Chalk at the Capitol, took place on Monday the 19th and was a family-friendly event to promote awareness of domestic violence. There were activities for all ages ranging from face-painting to the big, bouncy slide and rock wall.

Participants were also encouraged to write messages of peace and non-violence on the sidewalk in front of the Capitol building. It was a wonderful event put together by some really amazing people. I encourage you to attend next year and support this great cause!
