World’s social work day electrifying for UZ

STUDENTS from Social work department, gathered at Bhekuzulu hall (BZ), ON Tuesday 16 March 2011, to celebrate World’s social work day. This celebration is annually held on the 3rd Tuesday of March. For the second time in the history of University of Zululand, this day was celebrated and proved to have a positive contribution to Social work students.
Not only Social work students took part, but Social work practitioners from different field also joined Unizulu in the celebration. This celebration mainly focuses on Social work contributions to society and its part of an on-going dialogue about how to address challenging social conditions worldwide.
This year’s theme was “Social work voices responding to global crises, together we develop the agenda”. Former head at Unizulu, Social work department Professor Nzimande, was the guest speaker. Currently Nzimande works as the director for Albert Nomandla consultant.
In his uplifting speech, Nzimande said, “Social workers must be able to define the crisis they are currently facing, and they should have the mental picture of the crisis being solved for the society”. Said Nzimande.
“This country has great resources but there are not adequately distributed, this calls for Social workers to be dedicated in their work and have more knowledge of the field”, explained Nzimande.
Social work students showed to have huge interest in this celebration as they flooded to BZ. 3rd year student Mpume Bhengu, from Social work revealed to the press that, this was indeed a great celebration. “We were equipped, inspired and acquired lot of information about this field. We learnt that there are many other things that one can do within Social work Practice”.
“Our rector serves as the very good example, as she was the social work prior to her appointment as the University rector” said Bhengu.

Where is Bay TV?

When it was announced in August 2009 that Bay TV was on air they was great ecstasy and bliss around Zululand. We regained hope and our pride for Zululand was rapidly instigated. Everyone expected dramatic transformation to unfold within the land that we pride. Speeches and all the newspaper articles that were published about Bay TV, made us to believe that this beloved land is going to greater height in media. Zululand became the multimedia platform and many actually wanted to move in. Indeed this was the enormous initiation and to die for idea.

It very degrading and brings great sorrow in our hearts when we pass the offices of Bay TV at Empangeni not operational. Many community radio and television stations are faced by this huge monster. That is disputes of top management. Internal political clashes are believed to be the major element that influenced the breakdown of this station.

Finances also did contribute in its closure, however conflicts to occupy top positions without sufficient experience was the key factor. Most people expected a blast in Bay TV, and many local businesses we more than ready to come on board and advertise with the station. It was also going to discover many magnificent talents hidden under shadows of Zululand. However, the presence of people in the management who don’t have the “transformation for the better” drive led to this break down. People who don’t think for the community, but for their stomach and families let down the very wonderful idea.

Bay TV was going to contribute in the development and uplifting of the economy of Zululand. As UThungulu district Municipality has opened film offices for the community, many were going to benefit. If there is another way available to bring this idea back it should be brought back. Many young people are unemployed. Some have skills and capabilities; this television was going to be the helping hand even to them. Zululand University students were also going to greatly benefit, journalism and media students were going to get the relevant platform to put their expertise into practice. Not many of them have the advantage of going to SABC offices in Durban or Johannesburg.

It not only Bay TV that failed; there is another community radio station which was expected to be around Richards bay, it called Shine fm. The board members were fairly elected however, since from there we have heard nothing about it. No updates have been said regarding their day to be on air. It very shocking and surprising because thousands were given to this radio station, but it never went on air. People with good ideas but without a vision don’t take the society anywhere. They only make people to raise their hopes and later just don’t fulfill their promises.

Sweeden sweet sounds meet Unizulu

University of Zululand had a top class celebration with the well known choir from Stockholm Sweden. This magnificent gathering was held at the world class wetland iSimangaliso, st Lucia. Due to the eruption of strike on campus this concert which was scheduled to be at Bz was moved to St Lucia.

Choral society from Unizulu joined the Europeans in the shore of the lake St Lucia estuary in the brilliant overhead sun. Both choirs shared their essence of music, as birds adjoined them with the sweet sounds. Swedish had an opportunity to learn some of the Zulu words which were added to spice up the gathering of the sweet sound makers of the time.

Unizulu’s media co-coordinator Clare Tylor said, “It was a meeting of opposites producing a new fusion sound and marking the beginning of a relationship of musical discovery, promoting harmony between people from countries far apart through a new form of diplomacy”.

The strong and solid bond was created between these two choirs, with common grounds to take choral music to greater heights. Unizulu choral society is currently the champions of universities choral music in South Africa Beating all South African Universities with the good essence of sweet sounds, the society is still collecting and scooping trophies in many choral competitions across the country.

Political unrest brought shame

The political unrest that initially started on Thursday, prevented many events that were supposed to take place on Campus. Functions that were planned long before were forced to be on hold and some terminated due to the shutdown of the institution for 3 days.

Students were informed to evacuate the University as it was being shut down. This was done to avoid demolishing of the university property as it happened in the previous year.

Future journalists Programme, from Rhodes University which was anticipated to visit the department of Communication Science on Thursday, was forced to call off their visit due to unrest on Campus. FJP personnel were on their way to Unizulu, just after passing Ballito, they were than phoned to call off their journey to Unizulu.

That brought sour waters to eyes of many Communication Science students, as this was the golden opportunity to out show their capabilities. The Future Journalist Programme, train and equip journalism students from universities across South Africa. Their visit to Unizulu was part of the national promotion of the programme to Universities in the country.

No student card, no entry

“No student card, no entry”, these are the flying words in residents during the afternoon hours. The University has made it easy to identify non res students with their student cards. In an effort to create a good stay of students and make students residents a home away from, this system has been initiated.

“We don’t want any stories, but only your green or orange student card with res written on it”, said the guard when one student tried to enter without the green student card. The security have the verve and vitality to ensure that even by mistake no one get excess to residents without authorization.

Residence students have green background student cards, post graduates res students have orange back ground written res. Students residing off-campus have red background student cards. If your card is red you are not allowed in students res, but if it green you are free. This makes it easier for the newly employed gaurds in student’s residents.

The implementation of this scheme minimizes the number of illegal personnel from entering student residents without any authorization by the University.

At first students showed to be against this routine of carrying student cards when leaving residences. Although it was the heavy burden for them, some have decided to go with the flow. Students with red background student cards or without student cards are not allowed in student residents.

Unizul fresher’s ball to rock every one

Time is just passing by and new students cannot await their official welcoming at Unizulu. Preparations are under way and everything currently seems to be running smoothly. Fresher’s party is expected to be held on the 11th of March 2011.

It is expected to be on top of the range, since 2010 first years were unfortunately not welcomed in this fashion. Absence of the SRC in the 2010 academic year is believed to be the sound reason for the absence of their official welcoming.

2010 first year will also join together with 2011 first years and will be welcomed officially. Students are very thrilled of the day currently, as tickets have already started to sell like hot cakes at the SRC offices. Sthembiso Zondo, the popular motivational speaker on Ukhozi fm will uplift students on the event.

Different artists will also be sharing the stage on the night. Among those artists are DJ Cyndo, Tira and Big nuz and the likes will keep the stage burning on Friday. The occasion is expected to be formal and prestigious.

New lecture halls for UZ

University of Zululand is in the process of improving the standard of education within the Zululand community. This is confirmed by the new lecture halls to be built. In an effort to avoid overcrowding in lecture halls, establishment of new lecture halls came into existence. On the 8th of March 2010, tender was awarded to Aveng –Grinaker LTA, the appointed contractor for the contraction of lecture facilities.

Parking area adjacent to the faculty of Education and department of Nursing Science will be the area for the contraction camp. The classic new lecture facilities will be contracted next to Inkanyiso complex. More than R33 million will be spent in building these top class facilities.

According to the contract manager, Paul Muir, the lecture halls are expected to be complete by 13 February 2012. “These lecture halls are malti-purpose, so they can even cater for other function besides lecture sessions” said Muir. About 2000 students can be accommodated to these new facilities which will create a conducive environment for learning. During the construction the site will be cordoned, “Students are urged not to excess the site for the benefit of their health” explained Muir.

Director for Physical planning and works, Mike Symthe, invited staff members who are willing to see new building concepts to visit the library where posters are on the view in the library entrance foyer.

Residences are also under way next to Siqalo. New double story students’ residents will accommodate 336 people, 24 students per floor. Dining area with ablution facilities and cooking facilities will be provided for these new residents.

Students took a stand at Unizul

I am one of the students at the University of Zululand, since my arrival in this institution there was a huge gab of communication between students them selves and between management. Students had no platform to voice out freely what lies within them. They had no source of information on current issues happening within their institution. I just want to extend my deepest gratitude and intellectual appreciation to some students of Unizul who took a stand and revived University of Zululand Press.

UZ press is the online news source for students to access current hot issues unfolding within the institution. This on line news source was not running for quit a long time, but we appreciate these students for reviving and bringing back such a valuable tool. In the past, as students we used to read stories unfolding on campus to other news sources without knowing the issue. But UZ press is now keeping us informed with all current issues, from the SRC issues to student’s society events.

There are many other students on campus that also tried to establish news papers but failed along the way. We waited in great expectations but they never managed to publish even one story. UZ press is a very pivotal tool for us students who want to improve our writing skills and for the whole student body of Unizul.

Guys I really appreciate the work well done. Keep your site with your sizzling hot articles up and running. We need people like you in this country, who can take initiation regardless of the environment. In previous years I visited other universities like University of Johannesburg, Rhodes University, they have news papers owned and run by students. They govern radio stations and online magazine all by determined students who wish to bring change in their surrounding. Our institution should support these students in every way. This is the real legacy which needs to be nurtured and supported. Since UZ press is the only news provider for students at Unizul, I think many even from out side should lay hand and assist these students with passion to make a difference and bring about great transformation. Such ideas need to be encouraged, so that other students can take a good pattern.

Styles fc new champions for C.S.L

Styles fc won 3 - 0 after battling against Liverpool fc on the 23rd of October 2010, for campus soccer league (CSL) finals, at Ellis park. This game came after huge difficulties as both teams had to make it to the finals. Liverpool was defending its trophy as they were the champions for campus Soccer League. 10 teams start the league, yet only two reach final stages and only one team get to experience lifting up the trophy.

The game kick-started with both teams struggling so hard to make it to the goal post. However Styles fc kept on visiting the Liverpool’s defense line in attempt to test their rigidity. But Liverpool allowed no player to break their backline. In the first half, goals were very scarce, as it ended with no goals from both teams.

When the second half commenced, Styles fc wasted many goal opportunities, as they missed many golden opportunities within the 18 yard.

After much of dribbling, passing and sever attacks to the defense line of Liverpool fc, Siqiniseko Mhlongo, striker for Styles fc managed to score the first goal of the game. Mhlongo did not end there, he also came back for the second instance and pushed the ball under the cross bar, which made Styles to lead with 2 – 0. For the third time Mhlongo showed that his mission was not yet finished with Liverpool. Again he visited the weak defense line for Liverpool and scored the super well knitted goal, which qualified Styles fc to be winners of the Campus soccer league.
Liverpool coach Sthembiso Xaba said, “Our defeat was due to the fact that four of our good and best players that we trust the most, were not around. They had to attend Amazulu fc play offs, that why we were defeated”
“Although we lost this game, we wish to extend our word of appreciation and congratulate Styles fc for their victory” Mhlongo explained.

Styles fc players celebrated with champagnes and sang their songs of victory. Nkululeko Makhanya manager for Styles fc said, “This was the good and fair game and we had no problems reported, we are really happy for our victory” explains Makhanya

“I just want to thank all Styles fc players for their dedication and commitment they showed from the beginning of the league. Our team had no loose, that show commitment, we thank them a lot without them we would have not won this league” said Makhanya

Styles fc only had draws and no loose during this league, they walked away with R3 500 prize and the trophy, while the second position team got only R2 500.

C.S.L public relations officer Sabelo Mathenjwa said, “Styles fc really deserves this win since they had no loose from the beginning of the league and I congratulate them for their victory”. Styles fc supporters join the team and celebrated their victory together.

29 October 1983 to be remembered at Unizulu

Five people were killed and many others injured at the University of Zululand (Ongoye) after the outbreak of political violence at the institution on 29 October 1983. Five of those killed were students who were supporters of the United Democratic Front (UDF). The violence between an estimated 500 Inkatha Freedom Party supporters and a group of UDF aligned students highlighted the rising political tensions in the province. The rapid growth of independent trade unions in Natal in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and the increasing activities of the UDF posed a threat to IFP’s hold on popular support in KwaZulu. As people began to support to the trade unions and anti-apartheid community organizations the support base of the IFP was gradually eroded.
As a consequence, the 1980s were dominated by a period of sustained conflict and political violence that reached alarming proportions in some areas. The effects of the conflict that broke out in the province permeated various sections of society including educational institutions such as schools. Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi condemned the school boycotts that had spread across KwaZulu. After he declared that a band of disciplined and well regimented band on warriors (impis) should be formed in every Inkatha region, bands of Inkatha supporters became more visible. The impis went out to schools to stamp out schools boycott in the townships around Durban and KwaMashu. Rising tensions between Inkatha and UDF led activities contributed to the outbreak of the political violence at the University of Zululand in October 1983.
The violent clash at the University of Zululand was triggered when students aligned to the ANC and UDF opposed an attempt by Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi to use the campus for a ceremony to commemorate the death of King Cetshwayo. In the aftermath of the ‘Ongoye massacre’ lectures and impending university examinations were severely disrupted. Reverend Enos Sikhakhane and his colleagues at the Interdenominational African Ministries' Association of Southern Africa (IDAMASA) volunteered to supervise the writing of the end of the year examinations in 1984. That same month Buthelezi blamed the UDF for the outbreak of political violence and asserted that the students had said things about him which offended Inkatha Youth supporters. A Commission of Enquiry was set up to investigate the circumstances surrounding the outbreak of the violence at the University of Zululand and published its findings in 1985.

SRC FINALLY INAUGURATED

The University of Zululand Students Representative Council (SRC) was officially installed at Bhekuzulu hall. Thousands of students filled the hall in adjoining the inauguration and witnessing history being made. Unizul was without SRC for the past eight months, the inauguration was the crucial moment not to be missed as it marked a new page for the university of Zululand community.

Different parties congratulated and wished best of luck for Mr Bongani ‘Jobe’ Sthole and his executive, as they will be rolling their sleeves for students. Other parties admitted defeat and posed challenge of service delivery to the president and his executive.

Speaking in the event SRC president, Mr Bongani ‘Jobe’ Sthole said, “We are very happy that you trusted us and voted for us to be your leaders and we promise to lead this institution without considering political affiliation from which students come from”.

Students showed much trust and interest to Jobe, as he continued with his speech they applauded and whistled in appreciation for his victory. “We want this university to develop politically and stay away from bad history that has shaped our institution, Sthole says. As they read their manifest Sithole also stressed to priorities the needs of students. “Among our priorities as the SRC are to eliminate over crowding in our residences, provide healthy food in dining halls and to ensure students’ security through fencing of our institution” Sithole explained.

Kwazulu-Natal MEC for transport and community safety and liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu who was the guest speaker said, “This SRC should open the new chapter of no strikes, violence and vandalism, all that must be the thing of the past in this university”

Mchunu ended his speech by urging the 2010/2011 SRC to take this university to greater heights and emphasized that they should try to overcome all the challenges of the past.

Bongani ‘Jobe’ Sithole’s executive consists of six other members that promise great transformation for Unizulu, Deputy President, Mxolisi Makhathini; Secretary General, Philani Mthethwa; Treasurer, Silindile Masikane; Projects and Campaigns Officer, Siphelele Jiyana; Gender Officer, Ntokozo Mthimkhulu and Media Liaison Officer, Sisana Lembethe.

UZCF newsletter second edition out

Second issue of UZCF news letter filled the shelves on Tuesday 5 October 2010. The second edition came after huge dedication and commitment by all team members of the newsletter. Saints received the second edition with warm hands, although it was quite expensive as the price reached the ceiling. The edition was full of current issues which includes closing function for counselling ministry. UZCF editor Phumlani Nkwanyana said, “I am very glad that our second issue is out. This work requires dedicated people. But I am very thankful to have such committed team”.

Uzcf newsletter is the monthly edition for UZCF society. The idea for this project came up with Phumlani Nkwanyana this year. The former executive received the idea with good hands, but due to communication inconveniences the message was not passed back to Phumlani declaring the implementation of the newsletter. Toward the end of the third term former President for UZCF Mr. T.A Mhlongo infomed Nkwanyana to carry on with his idea. First issue was than out towards the end of third term. The executive for 2010/2011 also welcome the idea and wanted it to carry on.

Currently the newsletter is seeking funds for printing Nkwanyana said. “It very expensive to print especially colour in our University printing centre, but we cannot afford to abort our baby. We are currently working on finding advertisers and sponsors to support our newly born baby.”

“I don’t want this idea to die, I will fight until we get sponsors,” Nkwanyana says
The UZCF newsletter is working out the third edition which will be more standardised and meet the needs of UZCF community.

Political leaders visited UZCF for prayer

Political leaders visited UZCF on the 17 September 2010 with the aim to unite and pray together for peaceful SRC elections. Their visitation was solely intended at urging the almighty God to intervene and keep the violence free elections.

In the previous year there were hindrances which led to failure of SRC elections; this prayer was to break all the yokes that may also try to intrude even this year. Some of the political leaders were precisely on time, while some entered after the service had already started. Their speech in front of the church proved to be fair and not emphasizing on much compaigning but to urging God to intervene. The church earnestly prayed one accord for leaders. They also offered to the church different offerings which enhance the church in different forms. Presidents of many political formations, when interviewed promised to bring dramatic transformation in the church. This include supporting the church with more standardized sound system which aid in worshiping.

Their presence in the church was the significant moment not to be easily forgotten. They stayed together without fighting each other. It a was good moment to witness leaders for different parties rubbing shoulders in the house of God.

Democratic Alliance students’ organization president Menzi Dhlomo said, “As the organization we will support the church in every way possible. We want to support outreachs for the church, so that the word of God can reach every student and everyone”. DASO believes that the church plays the big role in developing our community, explained Dhlomo.

The church wait in great expectant to receive from these promising statements made by the political formations.
South African Democratic Students Movement president Nhlakanipho Sbiya also promised in the interview to respond positively in any call of the church. The church lack facilities Sbiya explained, SADESMO will strive and ensure to sponsor this church with more perfect sound. More over, Sbiya explained “We have noted that the church is regularly disturbed during some services. We there fore will invent the building which will be only dedicated to fellowshiping of saints without disturbances by any events”.

The Youth Communist League president Bongani Sithole also laid his promises. YCL will make sure to cater for the church; we will buy new full sound system for the church as it seems to be in the very poor condition. “Our organization wants the church to also engage in sport activities, that is why we offered the soccer kit to the church”.

Sithole further elaborated saying, “We realized as the organization that worshipers in the church don’t have uniform which will make them more presentable, it our wish to provide the church with uniform. When Sithole was asked whether they are any means that his organization can do to sponsor the newly born newsletter, he agreed to support it in every way they can.

Social site destroying our youth (Toilet)

There is the newly introduced social site which has come with lot of immorality to many of our youth. The site is called Toilet and can be easily accessed in most cell phones. As the name says toilet, it clearly shows that there is no sense that one can acquire from visiting this site, but only things that don’t make any sense can be found. Many young people visit this site and post awful things about other people. Every thing is bare, there is no limitation of words you don’t mind your language you post what so ever you about someone else.

Recently they posted something about the president of Unizul Youth Communist league Bongani Sithole popularly known as Jobe on campus. They degraded his status as the president that many should look up to. They said he must go now, he has been at Unizul for quit some time, we have realized that Jobe is now studying to be the dean of students which is impossible. Many other horrific things have been posted. The sad part is that you cannot track and identify someone who wrote badly about you.

This site has received dramatic increase by University students and even high school pupils. It gets updated in seconds due it unworthy statements posted. Young people spend most their times posting these nasty statements and reading other people’s statements. They don’t care about who you are and the position you hold in the community. There are many people that have been posted on this site and they rarely post good things about them.

Among other people that were posted badly in this site are Zululand Fever journalist Noxolo Mamele, Unizul Rector Fikile Mazibuko, SADESMO and SASCO leaders, the daughter of UThungulu municipality spoke person and Unizul lecturers are the daily bread in this site. It has recently become the hole of devious wall of reputation destructor. If there are means to shut this site further steps should be taken very soon to prevent moral decay in our society. The advancement of technology brings indirectly destruction in our young people.

What kind of leaders are we going to have in future, if these young people focus on ruining other people’s lives? It clearly shows that South Africa is still yet heading to discover more Malema minded people this is revealed by what we witness in this site, where young people have no mercy and fail to think for others.

This site is just the tool made to turn the minds of young people upside down with. Young people should be thinking of improving South Africa in future and ways to pick up where our leaders failed to excel. Construction site or an educational institution?

The University of Zululand is becoming more and even more hazardous to students. As much as we like proper and conducive environment for learning but one will agree with me that at the University of Zululand there has been an ongoing extreme construction and fixing of non broken things, disturbing our lecture and study time everyday.

In my two years experience being a student at the University of Zululand there is never a single day without a common people on blue work suites. I personally found these condition disturbing students because it leads to passage overcrowding, polluted surroundings and polluted air because of dust which is a concerned to asthmatic students . Most of the students are worried why these constructions company only start their ups and downs only when we come back from recess.
These people had time to work without any disturbance when the varsity is on indentation, but they always wait for us to comeback then they start using their loud, disturbing machineries. In most cases they are always working on something which has to do with heavy machineries and commonly produce dust which can be a threat to our healths. This situation is very dangerous to people who are allergic and nothing else but to put their lives in hazard. When it comes to the machineries, some produce very loud sounds which may undoubtedly affect our ears and some are toxic smells producers as well. I think the university lacks the ability to plan ahead, construction during the vacation, and study during academic period.

Sungeni Chithambo was born in Malawi, in the place called Zomba. She is the first born and sister to two siblings. Sungeni was born in 1991. While she was young Sungeni had a strong desire to be one of the best vets, as she had love for animals. “I like little animals especially rabbits”, she said. Sungeni is uniquely identified with her nice, brownish spectacles.She went to Schiennes Primary School, in Scotland where she was the only black girl. “I really liked myself as I was ideally unique from every one,” explained Sungeni.The exquisite lady loves wearing skinny jeans and shirts which look very stunning on her. “Skinny jeans make me feel more comfortable and on top of the world,” said Sungeni.

She likes freaky hair styles which keep her head wild every time.Early this year, lovely Sungeni was fortunately selected to be part of golden key society, due to her superb academic performance. In the past she won an award as the best creative writer, which gave her inspiration to be the prolific writer.As she grew up the love for animals altered completely and wanted to be the writer. Currently the striking slim girl is doing her second year in Journalism at Rhodes University. She spends most of her spare time writing, watching movies and surfing the internet. One day she wants to be one of the prolific writers. “I have that eagerness to be in high point of media industry, I just want to be in the top of the range” Sungeni said with a smile.

Phumlani Nkwanyana, whom I uniquely call Push, was born in Ngwelezane Hospital, Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal. Here he stayed from his birth until his high school career. He still lives there up to now, studying at the University of Zululand. He was raised by both his parents and according to Nkwanyana, they describe him as a shy little boy. “Everyone loved me,” he says. “People used to give me money”.
Reminiscing on his childhood memories, Nkwanyana speaks of the wonderful time he had in grade three with his good friend Prince. “We used to talk about life,” he says enthusiastically. His worst memory was in grade one. He badly needed to go to the toilet and being a shy boy was too afraid to ask his teacher for permission and ended up soiling himself right in his seat! From then till the end of the day he remained in his messy clothes.
Nkwanyana has three older sisters and a younger brother. He and his brother used to fight all the time when they were young. He recalls a time in grade five when they had a big fight and his brother scratched his hand with a piece of broken mirror. The scar still remains. Regardless of this, Nkwanyana and his brother now get along like the best of friends. His mother had the greatest impact on him when he was growing up. “She used to tell me stories and talk to me,” says Nkwanyana. He also used to get into trouble for “childish, naughty things” like eating other people’s food and not making his bed.
Nkwanyana not only enjoyed making new friends as a child but he liked making things with clay, playing soccer and watching Power Rangers and George of the Jungle.

Dr Majodina talks women empowerment in the open lecture

Unizulu hosted Dr Majodina, to discuss human rights and women in the informative open lecture held at Bhekuzulu hall on the 19th August 2010. The lecture was the eye opener to women and full of motivation.
Dr Majodina is the registered clinical Psychologist and the story of success in the world of academia, said the rector while introducing Majodina. Motivation and empowering of women to take a stand in knowing their right is what Mojodina concentrated on. Women of 1956 played a very pivotal role in fighting for the dignity and status of women, this generation should also take the pattern. “Women of this generation need to fight for equality in all government sectors as women are not adequately presented in most government sectors”, explained Majodina.
In her speech, she stressed that all rights included in our constitution should be put into action and should be enforced. Although attendance was very poor, it never impeded Majodina to empower women. All women that attended the lecture were armed with food of the mind and tools to face tomorrow with confidence.
More over Mojodina, said education is the pivotal step in empowering women and can serve as the tool to stop women abuse and violence that exist in our societies.

Unizulu rector and vice chancellor, Fikile mazibuko, said we are very proud to be visited by such prominent people this make us to be part of the academic society in the very crucial manner. Students also spiced up the event with the essence of music which made the event the whole complete African component.
The event ended with questions that students and staff posed to Dr Majodina and all were fully answered.

RESPECT IS AN INSULT

As a student at University of Zululand, I’m really concerned about the high rate of students who engage in alcohol in our institution. I think alcohol was not manufactured to kill students’ dignity. Previously, when we talked of alcohol we thought of adults but currently the youth are the drivers of alcohol which lead to totally disgusting actions. They even fail to respect themselves.

In our institution our Vice-Chancellor mother, a parent closed the tavern. She wanted to build and shape us to focus on our studies but our peers go off campus to get alcohol to nearest taverns. As they return to the main campus, some forget their names and insult the passers-by while others are vomiting. If you visit residences, you will find them having unsafe sex in the presence of other students ( Editor’s note: Is this line true, consider ethics of Journalism). Respect is an insult. I’m worried about unwanted pregnancies that take place in this institution. If I ask some young pregnant students about their pregnancies, they told me that they don’t know what to do with the unborn baby and their parent will penalize them for their pregnancy. When asked of why don’t they use protection? Their response will say there were under influence of alcohol. They fail modules but they don’t fail to go to tavern and booze. I’m scared for the high rate of HIV and AIDS will drastically increase in our institution.

I like to warn my brothers and sisters about the danger we faced. “Let us love and respect ourselves to gain the respect of others”

On May 2009 the Scrutinize campaign was officially lounged at the University of Zululand and I am belligerent to understand why it was lounged. It also has come to my concern why we have the highest HIV/AIDS rate at the University of Zululand.
As the campaign got lounged last year I strongly believed that it has a whirl to serve its most important role which is the provision of condoms and giving sex education of which they seldom does. There is not even a single day I have come across a box of condoms in the bathrooms .The University has completely forgotten about student’s safety. This gives a clear picture that students are engaging themselves in unsafe sex practices which jeopardize their health and probably will ruin their futures. We are probably living in a time where one can’t guarantee he/she is HIV/AIDS free, but we are suppose to live a positive life practising the ABC (abstain ,be faithful and condomise).
I have seen scrutinize shows on campus day in and day out, but it doesn’t come into their concern that we as students are perishing and I strongly believe that they are just doing the campaigns for the sake of entertainment and or their own reimbursement.
I have been asking myself if it’s because the university doesn’t care about its students, or it’s just not being aware of what’s taking place around the campus especially in the residence. The only part one can realize if the university cares is when you owe the University at least 20 cents, you will never graduate without settling the debt, but our health doesn’t matter to them.

SA government prevents functioning of media.

I’m the journalism student and I strongly feel that our government is totally doing duties which are out of their scope. They are contributing to the malfunctioning of South African media, which is trying so hard to adapt in the global media sector. The government of South Africa’s attempt is to stop the proper functioning of media houses in this democratic country. These political gurus want to do their illegal matters and never be identified. As the country we have obtained democracy in 1994, which gave every member of the society freedom of expression. Therefore media houses must not be shut when conducting duties of informing the society.

This is painful to witness that the 16 years of South African liberation has come into ruins so swift as media is not liberated accordingly. The unjust arrest of Sunday times journalist Mzilikazi WA Africa clearly indicates that our government has a long way to go in maintaining fair and free functioning of the media. Wa Afrika’s arrest was just the means of intimidation and endeavours of shutting effectiveness of investigative journalism.

The government should be focusing on matters to stop poverty and unemployment which are major challenges facing this country. I believe that there is no editor that can allow false story to be published in the national newspaper. All the charges laid against Wa Afrika are not true and unjust, but the government is trying to defend it wrongs by arresting journalists. Hawks should be chasing corruption which exists in our municipalities and do away with unnecessary arrest of journalists. Billions of rands vanish without any development or transformation being made in our society. But police are busy fighting media. Our government need to know that, it the undoubted fact that media is the most powerful tool in the society. They cannot do their wrongs and never be exposed. That why investigative journalism was established, for extensive digging out of underground facts which exist within our societies.

The sad part of this story is that the court found Wa Africa not guilty of any charges. But money was exceedingly spent from his arrest. The government used the amount raging from R20, 000 for Wa Africa’s arrest, R2, 000 for cost of transporting innocent Wa Africa to Mpumalanga and R15, 000 for court proceedings. This money could have helped many destitute societies. Our government should start focusing on more crucial issues of the society.
