308 New Physical Therapists & 27 New Occupational Therapists

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announced on Wednesday (February 8, 2012) that 308 out of 610 passed the Physical Therapists Licensure Examination and 27 out of 72 passed the Occupational Therapists Licensure Examination given by the Board of Physical and Occupational Therapy in the cities of Manila and Cebu this February 5 & 6, 2012.

The results of the physical and occupational therapists licensure examinations was released in two working days from the last day of examinations.

Registration for the PRC ID and Certificate of Registration

Registration for the issuance of Professional Identification Card (ID) and Certificate of Registration will start on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 but not later than February 29, 2012.

Those who will register should bring the following

Duly accomplished Oath Form or Panunumpa ng Propesyonal;
Current Community Tax Certificate (cedula);
Two (2) pieces passport size picture (colored with white background and complete name tag);
One (1) piece 1” x 1” picture (colored with white background and complete name tag);
Two (2) sets of metered documentary stamps;
One (1) short brown envelope with name and profession.

You are also required to pay the Initial Registration Fee of P600 and Annual Registration Fee of P450 for 2012-2015. Successful examinees should personally register and sign in the Roster of Registered Professionals.

Unstable Kneecap – About Unstable Kneecap

Unstable kneecap occurs when the kneecap, also called patella, is not kept in its normal position in front of the knee. This may happen when the femoral groove where the kneecap normally slides is either uneven or too shallow causing problems, such as pain and instability. A direct blow to the kneecap may also cause your kneecap to become unstable.

Your kneecap is an important component of your knee joint. It helps connect your front thigh muscles to your shin bone. When you run, walk, sit or stand, your kneecap slightly moves up or down making sure that your movement is smooth.

Unstable Kneecap Symptoms

Symptoms of an unstable kneecap may include

Kneecap sliding to the side during movement
Knee buckles and possible difficulty supporting your weight
Knee catches during movement
Knee pain, especially in the front portion
Stiffness
Knee is swollen
Tenderness
Creaking or cracking sound with knee movement

Diagnosis

Your doctor will perform a thorough physical examination of your patella and your knee. He or she may ask you to bend and straighten your knee while observing movement of your kneecap.

Your doctor may also recommend an X-ray of your involved knee to confirm a diagnosis or find out if other structures of your knee is injured or damaged.

Treatment

If your kneecap is completely out of its position (dislocated), your doctor will properly position your kneecap to its normal place. This procedure is called reduction.

Other treatments that you may receive may include

Physical therapy with a special emphasis on strengthening your front thigh muscles (quadriceps)
Exercises
Knee bracing
Knee taping

Your doctor may recommend surgery, especially if you have a chronic condition or your kneecap repeatedly dislocates or continues to be unstable.

A dislocated patella can happen when the patella or kneecap in front of the knee moves out of its normal place, often towards the outer side of the knee. Physical therapy can help you manage problems associated with a dislocated patella, such as muscle weakness, muscle tightness, and joint stiffness.

Whether you’ve undergone surgery for your patellar injury or not, your physical therapist can help you get back to the activities that you love as fast and safely possible.

Your First Physical Therapy Visit

During your first visit, your physical therapist will be asking about the activity that you were doing at the time of your injury. If you have had patellar injury in the past or have another medical condition, be sure to tell that to your therapist as well. Your PT will also ask about any medical procedures done after your injury including surgery, bracing or casting.

Your physical therapist will be conducting a thorough physical evaluation and examination of your knee, taking note possible problems associated with the condition, such as

Muscle weakness or tightness
Joint stiffness
Limitation of joint range of motion
Abnormal leg alignment
Too much mobility of the patella.

After asking questions and performing knee evaluation and examination, your physical therapist will be formulating a comprehensive knee rehabilitation plan, made specifically for you based on your specific problems and goals. You will be actively participating during this formulation of treatment plan. Your PT will be discussing with you about your plan of care.

Physical Therapy Treatment Options for Dislocated Patella / Patellar Dislocation

The physical therapy treatments enumerated below will not be provided for you in just one visit. Often, the treatment that you will receive will be based on your stage of recovery (phase of rehabilitation), your specific problems and goals, and whether you’ve undergone surgery or not. Your physical therapist may use a combination of any of the following physical therapy treatments:

Cold therapy or cryotherapy
Heat therapy
Suggest bracing
Taping
Electrical stimulation
Ultrasound therapy
Pool therapy
Soft tissue mobilization
Joint mobilization
Exercises

General conditioning exercises
Range of motion exercises

Dislocated Patella – About Kneecap Dislocation

A dislocated patella occurs when the kneecap or patella in front of your knee moves out of its normal position. Also called patellar dislocation, a dislocated patella may be caused by abnormal alignment of the bones forming the knee joint. In some cases, a direct trauma or blow to the patella may cause it to move out of place.

Causes of Patellar (Patella) Dislocation

Dislocated patella can happen when the person rapidly changes direction (turning or twisting of the knee) when his or her foot is firmly planted on the ground. Abnormal knee alignment or laxity of supporting structures, such as the quadriceps muscle and ligaments, may increase the likelihood of dislocating the patella.

Direct trauma to the kneecap, such as falling on the knee or a direct blow to the patella, can cause the condition, as well.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of a dislocated patella may include

Pain in front of the knee
Swelling
Tenderness
Bruising
Difficulty straightening the knee
Kneecap moves towards the outer side of the knee (laterally)
Difficulty walking
Stiffness

Sometimes you may hear a creaking sound when you try to move your injured leg. In some cases, however, the dislocated patella moves back to its normal position spontaneously with some relief of pain. This may still need to be looked at by your healthcare provider to see if other knee structures may be damaged.

What You Can Do – First Aid Treatment

Avoid unnecessary movement of your injured leg especially if pain worsens or there is an obvious deformity. Do not attempt to relocate the dislocated patella on your own. Try to stabilize your leg and apply a splint or have someone do it for you. Seek medical help immediately. Applying an ice pack wrapped in towel may help ease your pain and swelling during your travel to the emergency room.

Diagnosis

Your healthcare provider will likely ask about your activity that led to your injury. He or she will also perform a thorough physical examination of your knee. You may be asked to straighten and bend your knee.

Your doctor may recommend a knee x-ray to see whether other knee structures are intact or damaged.

Treatments

If your kneecap is dislocated, your doctor will perform a procedure called reduction to put back your dislocated kneecap to its proper place. In some cases, the patella moves back to its normal place spontaneously.

An immobilizer or a cast will be applied for several weeks to help restrict knee movement and allow healing.

After your immobilizer or cast has been removed, you may need to undergo physical therapy to help improve your muscle strength and knee joint range of motion.

If damage to the underside of your patella or other ends of bones comprising your knee is found, surgery to repair these damaged areas may be needed. Your doctor will discuss with you which appropriate procedure is best for you.

Dislocated Patella Physical Therapy (Rehabilitation)

If your knee has been immobilized for a long time, supporting muscles tend to weaken and your knee joint may become stiff. Physical therapy can help you find the best and safest exercises to help strengthen your weak muscles, especially your quadriceps muscle. In addition, your physical therapist uses modalities to help you gain normal knee joint motion.

The main goal of your knee rehabilitation is to return you to your usual activities or sport as fast and safely possible.

Shoulder joint pain can be excruciating and discomforting that it can affect your daily activities. Sometimes, your shoulder joint pain can wake you up at night. Several conditions can cause pain in and around the shoulder joint, such as arthritis, tendonitis, shoulder sprain and strain.

Because the shoulder joint is the most mobile among the joints, it can be a potential area for injuries and wear and tear.

Causes of Shoulder Joint Pain

Shoulder joint pain is a symptom of many shoulder conditions, including the following

Tendonitis
Tendon tears
Bursitis
Arthritis
Shoulder dislocation
Fracture or broken shoulder bones
Frozen shoulder

Symptoms Associated With Shoulder Joint Pain

Depending on the cause, your shoulder pain may be accompanied with one or more of the following symptoms

Swelling
Stiffness
Difficulty moving your shoulder
Redness
Bruising
Shoulder instability

If you experience severe pain or your pain worsens in spite of first aid treatment, you should seek medical treatment.

Home Remedies

If you have mild shoulder pain, simple home remedies may just be enough to manage it. If you have mild pain or discomfort, apply an ice pack for about 15 to 20 minutes every two to three hours. Wrap the pack with clean towel. Avoid direct contact of ice with your skin and leaving it for more than 20 minutes as it may cause frostbite injury. Continue applying ice for two to three days until swelling and pain subsides.

You may need to rest your shoulder or modify your activity to avoid stressing your already injured shoulder. After your symptoms subside, you may start performing gradual shoulder exercises. A physical therapist can help you find the best shoulder exercises based on your specific problems.

Taking pain relievers such as ibuprofen may also help relieve your pain and inflammation. Ask your health care provider how much pain reliever you can take and for how long.

Treatments

The treatment that you will receive for your shoulder pain will depend on your specific shoulder problem. Treatment options may inlcude

RICE therapy (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
Medications
Physical therapy
Surgery

Your doctor will discuss with you the best treatment approach for your specific shoulder problem.

Patellar Tendon – What Is the Patellar Tendon

The patellar tendon is a band of tissue that attaches from your patella (kneecap) to the upper front portion of your shinbone (tibia). The patellar tendon, also called patellar ligament, is a continuation of your quadriceps tendon. Your quadriceps tendon attaches your front thigh muscles (quadriceps femoris) to your patella.

Your patellar tendon works with your quadriceps muscles to help straighten your leg. Without this band of tissue, you will not be able to straighten your knee making standing and walking difficult.
Patellar Tendon Injuries

Two of the most common conditions affecting the patellar tendon are patellar tendonitis and patellar tendon tear.

Patellar tendonitis

Patellar tendonitis is the inflammation of the patellar tendon. It can be caused by sudden or forceful pulling of the tendon or repetitive knee movements, especially running and jumping. Tearing of fibers may or may not occur.

Patellar tendonitis is sometimes referred to as jumper’s knee.

Patellar tendon tear

Tearing of the patellar tendon may result from a fall; forceful pulling of the patellar tendon, such as that occurs in jumping; and a weak patellar tendon.

Patellar tendons can be categorized into partial or complete tears. In partial patellar tendon tear, some of the fibers are torn. A complete tear results in total disruption of the patellar tendon and the patella moves above the knee joint. This can be observed when compared to the uninjured knee.

What Are Eccentric Exercises?

For you to better understand what an eccentric exercise is, let us discuss how an eccentric muscle contraction is done.

In eccentric contraction, there is contraction while the muscle is lengthening. For example, try to sit down on a chair from a standing position. What do you notice on your front thigh muscles? They are contracting while lengthening to prevent you from suddenly falling onto the chair.

Another example, hold something heavy, such as a dumbbell, and bend your elbow. Now, straighten your elbow. As your elbow straightens, the muscle at the front of your arm is contracting while it is lengthening.

Why perform eccentric exercises?

Performing eccentric exercises as part of your exercise routine may help in preventing certain sports injuries. A study published online, August 8, 2011, in the American Journal of Sports Medicine found that eccentric strengthening of the hamstring muscles can help decrease hamstring injuries.

You can ask your physical therapist or doctor whether eccentric training is right for you. Your physical therapist can create a comprehensive eccentric program for you based on your needs and level of fitness.

Physical therapy can help you manage your joint stiffness and other associated symptoms. The type of physical therapy treatment that you will receive for your joint stiffness depends on the specific cause of your condition and other symptoms, such as pain and inflammation.

Physical Therapy for Joint Stiffness

Your physical therapist will be asking about your specific condition including other symptoms that you are experiencing along with your joint stiffness. If you are experiencing symptoms after a recent injury, be sure to tell that to your physical therapist. Your therapist will also ask about your past medical history and other health problem that you might have, such as arthritis.

Your therapist will then conduct a thorough physical examination and evaluation of your joint and other associated structures to find out what’s causing your joint stiffness and other symptoms and to determine other joint problems that you might have.

After asking questions and performing physical examination and evaluation, your physical therapist will then create a comprehensive physical therapy treatment plan made specifically for you based on your symptoms; your needs; and goals.

Your treatment plan may be generally composed of

Cold therapy or heat therapy
Soft tissue and joint mobilization
Exercises
Use of assistive or walking device
Other physical therapy modalities

Physical Therapy Treatment Options for Joint Stiffness and Associated Problems

The type of physical therapy treatment that you will receive depends on your specific condition. In most cases, joint stiffness may be accompanied by other signs and symptoms, such as pain and inflammation; limited range of motion; and muscle weakness. Your physical therapist will help you determine the appropriate treatments for your specific problems. Your treatment plan may be composed of a combination of any of the following

Cold therapy
Heat pack application
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
Ultrasound therapy
Soft tissue mobilization
Manual stretching
Joint mobilization
Physical therapy exercises

Range of motion exercises
General conditioning exercises
Stretching exercises
Progressive strengthening exercises

Use of assistive or walking device (e.g. cane, walker)
Postural training
Patient education
