<description><![CDATA[<table><tbody><tr> </td></tr><tr> <td valign="top" align="left"><br><font size=1>Responsibilities:</font></td></tr><tr> <td valign="top" align="left"><b>GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:</b><br>The Physician Assistant for the Electrophysiology Service is responsible for assisting the attending physicians and Electrophysiology team in the medical management of the patients cared for by the Electrophysiology and Pacemaker Service, primarily on the inpatient service. The PA works closely with the physician and nursing staff in developing and coordinating a plan of care designed to meet the physical, psychological and social needs of patients and their families.  Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills are required.  Knowledge of current literature and a commitment to continued learning are also required.  Prior electrophysiology experience is favored. The mission, vision and core values of the Brigham and Womenand#x2019;s Hospital (BWH) are incorporated into all areas of practice.<br><br><b>PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</b><br>A. Pre-procedure Patient Care:<br><br>The physician assistant will be responsible for obtaining and coordinating the following general items: history and physical, laboratory results, charting of clinical findings, admisandnot;sion orders, nursing instructions and other required elements.  The physician assistant, in collaboration with the Laboratory Flow Managers, will coordinate admissions and transfers to the hospital, and ensure that informed consent for procedures are obtained.  The physiandnot;cian assistant will perform pre-procedure assessments in the Pre-admission testing center, Recovery room/holding area or outpatient setting as needed.<br><br>B. Interface between Cardiac Electrophysiolgy and Recovery Area:<br><br>The physician assistant will be knowledgeable about the Cardiac Electrophysiology Laboratory scheduling, procedure room turnover and availability of resources.  He/she will be called upon to manage patients after their procedures and while they await transfer to patient floor, and will assure availability of equipment for special procedures.  The physician assistant will ensure blood bank preparation and formal or standing surgical backup, when required for patient care.  The physician assistant will assist in family liaison. <br><br>C. Medical Treatment and Post-procedure Care:<br><br>The physician assistant will be responsible for many aspects of care under the supervision of the attending physician, including but not limited to: fluid and electrolyte management, nutrition, pain management, transfusion therapy, anticoagulation management, education, and post-discharge planning.  Following procedures, the physician assistant will manage vascular access, monitor and manage arrhythmias, pacing, drug therapy, O2 therapy, and other non-cardiac medications, under the supervision of the attending physician.  The phyandnot;sician assistant will assist in the evaluation and management of clinical events such as fever, altered hemodynamics, CHF, pulmonary complications, abrupt vessel closure, arrhythmias, access site complications and others.  The physician assistant will assist in transfers to and from the intensive care units.<br><br>D. Discharge Planning<br><br>The physician assistant will perform patient education regarding discharge including preandnot;ventive care and risk factor reduction.  He/she will write discharge orders, prescriptions and dictate discharge summaries in collaboration with the attending physician.  The physiandnot;cian assistant may act as a liaison between the attending cardiologist and family members, and will schedule follow-up care as necessary, including VNA if needed.<br><br>E. Outpatient Clinical Duties:<br><br>and#x2022; Collaborates with inpatient team in preparing patients for admission.<br><br>and#x2022; Works collaboratively with nursing staff to assist in the care of patients. The purpose of the preliminary evaluation is to provide feedback to the candidate on progress towards level of competency required and provide guidance on additional development needs. The mission, vision and core values of the Brigham and Womenand#x2019;s Hospital (BWH) are incorporated into all areas of practice.<br><br><b>PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</b><br>A. Pre-procedure Patient Care:<br><br>The physician assistant will be responsible for obtaining and coordinating the following general items: history and physical, laboratory results, charting of clinical findings, admisandnot;sion orders, nursing instructions and other required elements.  The physician assistant, in collaboration with the Laboratory Flow Managers, will coordinate admissions and transfers to the hospital, and ensure that informed consent for procedures are obtained. Interface between Cardiac Electrophysiolgy and Recovery Area:<br><br>The physician assistant will be knowledgeable about the Cardiac Electrophysiology Laboratory scheduling, procedure room turnover and availability of resources.  He/she will be called upon to manage patients after their procedures and while they await transfer to patient floor, and will assure availability of equipment for special procedures.  The physician assistant will ensure blood bank preparation and formal or standing surgical backup, when required for patient care.  The physician assistant will assist in family liaison. <br><br>C. Medical Treatment and Post-procedure Care:<br><br>The physician assistant will be responsible for many aspects of care under the supervision of the attending physician, including but not limited to: fluid and electrolyte management, nutrition, pain management, transfusion therapy, anticoagulation management, education, and post-discharge planning.  Following procedures, the physician assistant will manage vascular access, monitor and manage arrhythmias, pacing, drug therapy, O2 therapy, and other non-cardiac medications, under the supervision of the attending physician. Provide post and#x2013;procedure care, and rounding on inpatients which may include order writing, procedure site assessment, out-patient management, in-patient management, discharge planning and clinic follow-up; fluid and electrolyte management, pain management, and drainage catheter management.<br>e. INDIRECT CARE:<br>Participates in activities to promote quality patient care within the framework of the clinical area.<br>a. Receives, manages, and tracks consults to the CSIR service.<br>b. Participates in Quality Assurance Program on a regular and continuing basis.<br>c. Demonstrates appropriate collaborative and consultative relationships with other providers within the institution and community.<br>d. Demonstrates awareness of community resources, and assists staff, patients and families to use them effectively.<br><br>e. Takes responsibility for and documents appropriate follow-up triage of patientsand#x2019; problems and Lab results for medical and nursing providers in his/her assigned area.<br>f. Entering procedure data into CSIR database.<br><br><br>III. PARTICIPATIVE MANAGEMENT:<br>a. Assist in teaching of fellows, residents and students in all Cross-Sectional Interventional Radiology activities.<br>b. Demonstrates leadership skills in problem solving, i.e., recognizes need for a policy, procedure, protocol, etc. and takes responsibility for its development.<br>c. Participates in selection of new employees and ongoing evaluation of other staff. <br>d. Assists in directing designated personnel in assigned clinical area.<br>e. Assists in planning and implementing unit goals and objectives.<br>f. Participates in cost effective management of personnel, time, supplies, and equipment in his/her area.<br>g. Collaborates with Clinical Director and Asst. Clinical Director regarding appropriate staffing patterns for the unit<br><br><br>IV. EDUCATION:<br>a. Identifies own learning needs and updates clinical knowledge and skills through formal and informal education and review of current literature.<br>b.
