so, lumelevel-up na tayo... if you're reading this... CONGRATULATIONS!!! for sure the reason why you're here is because you want to play those music sheets that are already in your possession which i bet, you diligently searched all over the World Wide Web and downloaded it for free, right?! wehhh pa-burger ka naman! ^_^v

PianistAkOnline is basically an educational site open to everyone who would like to play and learn the piano for FREE.... AT YOUR OWN RISK hehehe ^_^v paano ba naman kasi... ang plano ko lang eh makatulong ako sa inyong lahat sa pamamagitan ng paggawa ng piano music sheets, tapos mamumroblema lang pala ako ng bonggang-bongga sa dami ng nagtatanong kung paano daw nila babasahin yung mga ginawa ko... haannuubbbbaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! kaya ayan... tutulong na rin lang daw ako hindi ko pa lubus-lubusin... hala sige gumawa ng Piano Tutorials.... sa susunod nga mag-aral kayong mag-magic! hehehe joke... *peace*

Why piano?
yeah, why not?! ^_^v well, kanya-kanyang trip yan eh... others would want to learn how to play the violin, guitar, some would even want drums, triangle? hehe but since a lot of you are asking "how to read piano sheet music" eh might as well, gumawa na lang ako nito that could somehow help those people na gustong matuto magplay ng piano... by hook or by crook...

Paano nga ba ako nagsimula?

hmmm to make a brief history of my piano career ( if that's how you want to call it, career! ok fine! ) i started way back my elementary days pa. it was an unplanned encounter hehe. all i did before was to accompany a friend during her piano lessons or memorize some songs, piano music sheets which are by the way my friend's homework but i ended up being her guinea pig hehehe but i didn't mind anyway :p and take note, i don't know how to read sheet music yet, i had really no idea what a sheet music or a "piano piece" is as in pinapa-memorize lang sa akin yung tutugtugin niya then i'll play it sa piano... but it was fun though :p. also, i had a childhood friend who happens to be a good pianist and i always envy her for playing those black/white keys beautifully... in short you can say na INGGITERA ako... but not to compete... just to learn. i then asked my mom one day about it and she said YES ( which later on i found out the real reason why she agreed: it's because she's a frustrated musician hehe :p she always wanted to play the piano pero matigas daw mga daliri niya so ako na lang daw! haha ) to make the long story short, i took piano lessons, but stopped, then went back again to continue my lessons, stopped again, went back again, stopped ( more like pause na ata ito hehe ) oh man! hanggang sa hindi na ako nakabalik to continue my lessons because busy na sa school/college... but i did continue playing the piano ( school plays, church, choir, weddings, etc.) up to this day =p

it could have been my profession now if only i didn't pursue my dream of becoming a doctor. kaso pati pagdo-doctor ko hindi na natuloy pero okay lang. people who knew me thought i'd take up MUSIC pero ganito talaga buhay... anu't ano man eto pa rin ako, bagsak ko pa rin pala ay sa linya ng music... pero sideline nga lang ( but i intend to continue... 2nd course? why not! hehe ^_^v )

enough of my story... let's now go to what you'll see here on this site...

well, i won't be tackling the fundamentals of piano ( in-depth ) or history or anything that will bore me and you.. what you will see here are the basics of learning how to play the piano at the same time some tips na pwede kong i-share sa inyo on piano playing... i won't guarantee that you'll be like BEETHOVEN or MAKSIM MRVICA or CECIL LICAD in an instant! 'wag kayong ambisyoso't ambisyosa! gising gising! ( for people like me that took formal piano lessons, eh buwan/taon binibilang namin bago kami natutong tumugtog ng maayos :p hehehe ). i'll just post few lessons para somehow matugtog mo naman yang mga piyesang hawak mo at hindi mo lang basta titigan hanggang sa maging bato... okie?!

REMINDER:
these informations are for EDUCATIONAL purposes only. if you were to ask me, it's still best if you can avail music lessons with a piano teacher ( sencia na kahit gusto ko mag tutor ulit sa piano dahil sayang, moolah din yun eh hindi na kaya ng hectic schedule ko! nde naman ako bionic woman noh ^_^v ). hindi ito recommended sa mga bata ( so parental guidance na pala ang site ko hehehe... ) what i mean is.... this site is purely intended sa mga taong nakakaintindi na... nakakapagbasa na.... at hindi na kelangan ng patnubay mula sa mga magulang joke... :p more on run through / brief outline kasi ang ginamit ko dito in explaining the lessons.... kaya kung baby pa utak... avail a piano teacher nearest you! hindi ko gustong mawalan ng raket ang mga piano teachers hehe... hindi rin naman ako super henyo... lagi ko ngang sinasabi marunong lang ako pero hindi magaling... tamang gusto ko lang maishare sa mga taong nagbabasa nito ang gusto nilang malaman... ano pa nga ba kundi ang matutong mag-piano. isa pa, more on PAGBABASA ang gagawin mo dito dahil wala pa akong time para gumawa ng video tutorials... nagkalat naman sa youtube yun eh, dun nalang kayo maghanap... hehehe :p but then again, sa mga taong mahilig mag-short cut, mahilig sa libre, tara usap tayo! ( boy abunda is that you?! lelz ) ^_^v

oh and btw, i'll be using tagalog / english sa pagi-esplika nga mga bagay-bagay so that i can elaborate the topic well and syempre para naman maintindihan nyong mabuti kasi for sure naman mga kababayan ko ang magbabasa nito... on the other hand, for those people who can't understand tagalog, i'm very sure there are lots of online piano tutorials out there... google is your bestfriend! ^_^v

first of all, why do you want to learn how to play the PIANO?

sabi nga nila "you can never be too old to learn how to play the piano...." at naniniwala naman ako sa sabi-sabi nilang ito. marami kasing mga dahilan kung bakit gusto matuto ng isang tao tumugtog ng piano. some would say it's because they have a favorite song that they wish they know how to play it on piano, others would say they want to learn because.... they just want to! period este exclamation point! walang pakialamanan hehe :p some would say they find a song pleasant to their ears at gusto nila tugtugin or others para i-surprise ang kanilang Special Someone or Significant Other with their favorite song with matching singing pa yan... yiheeee!

whatever the reasons may be... kung anuman yan.. ito lang ang maipapayo ko sa'yo sa puntong ito...

FIRST: you will need a lot of PATIENCE and DISICPLINE samahan mo na ng DESIRE at PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE... kalimutan mo muna ang sinabi ni ai² delas alas na "nobody's perfect, why practice?" okie?! hehehe good! :p

SECOND: be sure, be very sure that you have at least a piano or keyboard. nearby. for the love of whoever you wanna call hahaha.... 'wag puro imahinasyon ang paganahin sa pagkakataong ito... nandito ka para matuto magpiano hindi para matuto magdrawing... haha :p

and THIRD, have fun! rejoice because at long last, you'd be able to play your favorite song which you've been wanting to do since time immemorial hehehe joke... ^_^v

if you're reading this i suppose you've read the INTRODUCTION and PIANO BASICS so let's go to our next topic... inip ka na ba?! hehehe patience kapatid, patience... ^_^v

before i discuss all about music reading, you'll need to make yourself familiar with these symbols and terminology:

STANDARD NOTATION

it is the system used to read and write music. it lets composers transcribe music from sound to printed page. it is the best representation of the song(s) as the composer intended it to be played

imagine ang isang orchestra na walang pinagbabasihan na piyesa, siguro sobrang henyo nilang lahat! bravo! hahaha memorized na yung mga notes, pati dynamics, progressions, etc. etc. grabe! so, pag may gustong tumugtog ng tinugtog nila eh ASA nalang ang aabutin nun noh kasi walang piyesa hehe ^_^v

well, hindi lahat ng tao eh may kakayanan tugtugin ang isang kanta ayon sa pagkaka-play nito gamit lang ang tenga. you might ask:

eh hindi naman pala lahat ng musicians eh marunong mag-sight read. so, bakit pa ako mag-aaksaya ng panahon na matutunan kung paano basahin ang piyesa?!

oo nga naman... may tama ka... pero matanong ko lang din, eh ano pang ginagawa mo dito?! bakit mo nga ba ito binabasa pa kung ayaw mo rin naman palang matutunan kung paano basahin yang sandamakmak na piyesang nadownload mo!?!? hahahaha 'wag mo masyadong dibdibin yung tanong ko.... namimilosopo lang po lalz ^_^v

so mabalik ako sa gusto kong sabihin... oo nga't hindi lahat ng musicians eh sight readers pero sa mga taong yun hindi naman normal ang ability ng mga tenga nila compared sa ordinaryong tao. i remember reading a topic sa isang forum about being able to play a song by sight reading a piece or playing it by ear at maraming mga sagot not only coming from an amateur musician but also professional arrangers/musicians. importante nga ba talaga ang matutunan ang pag-sight read? in my opinion, depende kasi kung para saan. tulad ng in-example ko kanina, if you are to play with an orchestra ay utang na loob 'wag kang masyadong matapang! hindi pwede ang de-tenga dun not unless you can prove to the conductor that you can play the entire piece ( mga 8-10 minutes duration ) exactly as it's written sa piyesa... mygeleged mapupukpok ka ng contra bass kung nagkataon! haha ^_^v

knowing how to read scores thru standard notation won't hurt you. you don't have to be a fast sight reader. it's always good to be able to sight read at a basic level though. kaya nga andito kayo para matutunan kahit mga basics lang ng music reading pero remember na kahit ba sabihin mong alam mo na basahin ang mga nakalagay sa isang piyesa, na naiintindihan mo na ang mga nakalagay dito pero if you can't apply them, it's no use kaya be sure na i-apply ang mga ito. self-study kung self-study! hehe ^_^v

STAFF

the staff or stave is a set of five horizontal lines ( or ledger ) and four spaces. each line and space represents a key { key is the major or minor scale around which a piece of music revolves... } on the piano. staff is the foundation upon which notes [ { a note is represented by a sign which tells the musician the duration and pitch { pitch or tone is denoted by the position of the note on the staff lines and spaces } of a sound... ] and rests { a rest is an interval of silence in a piece of music, marked by a sign indicating the length of the pause } are drawn. ano ba hitsura nito... eto yun...

ledger lines are short lines used to extend the range of a staff beyond its normal five lines. ledger lines are added according to the same spacing that the staff used. example is yung whole note na middle C.

MEASURE or BAR

measure or bar is a segment of time defined as a given number of beats of a given duration. ito yung napapagitnaan ng two (2) bar lines kung tawagin. measures are used to divide and organize music. it usually marked with numbers for easier navigation of the piece. malalaman mo naman na tapos na ang isang piyesa kapag nakita mo na ang double bar line.

CLEFS

a clef ( from the french for "key" ) is a musical symbol used to indicate the pitch of written notes. placed on one of the lines at the beginning of the staff, it indicates the name and pitch of the notes on that line. this line serves as a reference point by which the names of the notes on any other line or space of the staff may be determined.

2 common clefs na ginagamit sa piano sheet music ( madalas ninyong nakikita ) are:

F-Clef { when the F-clef is placed on the fourth line, it is called bass clef }

NOTE:
may instances lalo na sa mga music sheets na ginawa ko eh may number 8 na nakadikit either sa top/bottom ng G-clef or F-clef. it only indicates na you'll be playing the notes one octave { octave is the relationship between two pitches where one has a frequency of 2 times the other... } higher or lower... depende kung sa taas nakapatong yung 8 or sa ilalim... siyempre if sa ilalim tulad nitong nasa figure vi.e. sa f-clef lahat ng notes na mababasa mo dito should be played an octave lower. same lang din sa g-clef kasi nasa ilalim yung 8, so notes should be played an octave lower. yun lang yun kaya 'wag kang mawindang... hehe ^_^v

notes and rests are typically combined in many different ways. the important thing is that all the notes and/or rests in any given measure “add up” to a complete measure. example of notes and rests...

NOTE:
beat is a regularly occurring interval of time in metered music used to subdivide each measure. it is the name for a unit of music. musicians learn to count beats, and play notes for the specified number of beats. counting beats starts when the first note is played.

so for instance... nakakita ka ng eighth note paano mo siya ika-count? kung ano ang bilis ng isang beat or ng isang tap or isang count, hahatiin mo lang cia sa dalawa.. hanap ka ng relo or watch, tignan mo yung second hand nya. diba ang one quarter note is equivalent to 2 eighth notes... so sa loob ng isang segundo, dalawang beses mong pipindutin, ika-count, or ita-tap ang eighth note... parang fraction lang ito sa math... so i-apply mo yun dito sa beat...

a dot following a notehead ( or dotted note value ) increases the note's duration by 50%. so pagnaka-encounter kayo ng ganito sa music sheet for instance a dotted quarter note, ang pagcount sa kanya would be 1 ( for the quarter note ) plus ½ ( for the half of the quarter note ) = 1½ beats. ayaw mo ng math?! sige, itigil mo na ang pagbabasa hehehe joke... ^_^v

ACCIDENTALS

is used to contradict the key signature it remains in effect until the next measure. an accidental sign raises or lowers the following note from its normal pitch. ito yung sharps, flats, naturals, double sharps, double flats... eto yun!

sharp is a symbol that raises the pitch or pitch class one half step
flat is a symbol that lowers the pitch or pitch class one half step
double sharps is a symbol that raises the pitch or pitch class two half steps
double flats is a symbol that lowers the pitch or pitch class two half steps
natural is a symbol that cancels any previous accidentals and indicates that the plain, unaltered pitch class is to be used

half step the smallest change of pitch in tonal music. the interval between to successive keys is always the same and this distance is known as half-step.
whole step an interval equal to two (2) half-steps.

examples:

half step from E to F
whole step from C to D

if sinabing sharp laging going to the right ang pagbibilang ng half step, kapag naman flat going to the left naman. always count starting from the position of your note, half step to the right if may sharp ( # ) sign, half step to the left if may flat ( b ) sign. start making yourself familiar with these symbols... ma-meet mo ulit sila sa mga susunod na lessons... nasa getting to know you stage palang tayo hehe ^_^v

TIE and SLUR

a tie is always located between two consecutive notes of same pitch. it is equivalent to a single note whose duration is the sum of the durations of the two notes.

a slur is located between two notes of any pitch. if it is played, the note pitch will vary smoothly or semitone by semitone from the first pitch to the second one. a slur can also be used, when underlining a whole group of notes, to specify "phrasing", i.e. indicate this group of notes has to be played in a single "sentence" ( in a single blow for a wind instrument ) and it can be inserted between two notes belonging to different staves.

what's the difference between a TIE and a SLUR?

simple, aside sa hitsura nila na minsan hindi mo madistinguished dahil pareho silang curved line, you'll notice that ties connect notes of the same pitch, forming essentially one longer note. slurs smoothly connect notes of different pitch. this means to play the notes without breaks. always look for the same pitch not necessarily the same note okie, pag may curve line na nagko-connect sa kanila, tied notes yun and all you have to do is add all the note's duration, that's how long you'll play that pitch before going to the next note to play... magkarugtong sila. on the other hand, ang slur naman para kasi siyang isang phrase... you'll play the notes individually pero connected parang walang hinga in between... magkakarugtong nga pero iba-iba naman sila ng pitch. gets nyo na ba?! ^_^v

TIME SIGNATURE

this is used to specify how many beats are in each measure and what note value constitutes one beat. time signature is also known as a “meter” which tells the musician how many notes are in a measure. the number on top is the number of beats per measure, and the bottom number is what type of note gets one ( 1 ) beat.

eto, mejo complicated na topic lalo na sa mga super beginners talaga at malamang yung may mga ayaw ng math subjects eh sori pero kailangan gamitin ulit ang natutunan sa math hehehe :o pero to give you an idea let's use above time signature symbol 4/4:

in simple time signatures, remember that the top number is the number of beats per measure while the bottom number is the type of note that gets a beat. so, sa 4/4 time signature: there are 4 beats in a measure where the quarter note gets one ( 1 ) beat... hala paano nangyari yun?!

looking at 4/4, the number on top is 4 which means there are 4 counts per measure. then looking at the bottom number probably confused you. the bottom number can be 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, etc. look at this chart.

2 ------------ Half note
4 ------------ Quarter note
8 ------------ Eighth note
16 ----------- Sixteenth note

sa madaling salita, yung example sa figure x.a. in a measure daw there are 4 beats at ang quarter note ang makakakuha ng 1 beat.

tanong:

eh talaga naman 1 beat ang quartner note diba?

sagot:

oo nga! base sa pinakita ko sa TYPES of NOTES/RESTS and its duration, 1 beat naman talaga ang quarter note. pero sa mundo ng time signature, hindi sa lahat ng panahon eh mga simple time signatures ang ginagamit tulad ng 4/4. pansinin ninyo yung mga piyesang meron kayo or try to grab some of my OPM piano scores, merong mga instances na gumagamit ako ng 6/4, 6/8 5/4 or minsan may nagawa akong 12/8, mga examples ito ng compound time signatures. so paano mo ngayon ipaglalaban sa korte suprema yang nalalaman mo aber?! nanakot hehehe eto seryus ulit... hihimay-himayin ko ng konti pa para lalo kayong mawindang =p

COMPOUND TIME SIGNATURES

in simple time signature ( e.g. 3/4, 4/4, etc. ) the top number gives you the beats per measure while the bottom number lets you know which type of note gets a beat. sa compound time signatures, it doesn't work this way... mas complicated ng konti. hala!!!!

the top number represents the number of subdivisions in a measure. for instance itong 6/8, if the subdivision ( the bottom number ) is an eighth note and the top number is six ( 6 ), there would be six ( 6 ) eighth notes in a measure. don't confuse this with the beat. the top number in a compound time signature must be divided by three in order to get the number of beats per measure. so, dividing the "6" in 6/8 by three ( 3 ) you get two ( 2 ) which means, there are two ( 2 ) beats in each measure of 6/8. in tagalog yung nasa ibabaw na number in a compound signature, to determine how many beats are there in a measure, ide-divide mo ito by 3. so sa 6/8 merong 2 beats. o teka basahin ang kasunod....

the bottom number represents the note value that subdivides each beat. this number can be used to determine the type of note that gets the beat by adding three notes of this value together. example the bottom number in 6/8 is "8" which represents an eighth note. adding three notes together you get a dotted quarter note and that dotted quarter note gets a beat in a measure of 6/8.

compound time signature

mathematically speaking pwede siyang 3/4 pero depende sa hinihingi ng kanta or how the music is organized kung alin sa dalawa ang pipiliin mong gamitin na time signature. a 6/8 is grouped into 2 groups of 3 eighth notes while a 3/4 is grouped into 3 groups of 2 quarter notes.

how to count...

don't worry you won't need a calculator to do this... for starters gamitin mong basihan ang relo/watch... yung second hand ng relo yun ang gawin mong basis ng counting... so, for instance...

4/4 = 4 counts or 4 taps or 4 beats sa isang measure, basta magbilang ka ng apat na beses bago ulit magsimula ang counting sa next measure... 1-2-3-4 | 1-2-3-4 | 1-2-3-4 | 1-2-3-4 yan para kang si the count pero pirated version hehehe ^_^v

how about 6/8?
what i usually do sa 6/8 is i divide the counting into two parts: 1-2-3 | 4-5-6 | 1-2-3 | 4-5-6 | 1-2-3 | 4-5-6. if i use my hand to beat this type of time signature: 1 beat = 1-2-3 count ,then another beat = 4-5-6.

gusto nyong marinig ang pagkakaiba-iba ng mga time signatures na ito... sige pagbibigyan ko kayo!

3/4 4/4 5/4 6/4 6/8 9/8 12/8 for the compound time signatures i used bass notes and try to feel the beat habang pinakikinggan mo. how to tell if a time signature is simple or compound? ipatawas mo! hahaha kidding aside, madali lang naman malaman kung simple and compound ang time signatures.a time signature is compound if the top number is greater than three and can be divided by three. any time signature where the top number is equal to three or another number that is not divisible by three is simple. ang nakakadagdag pa ng kalituhan dito eh 'pag umeksena na si rhythm at si tempo... pero hindi naman kasi dapat malito ng husto... tandaan lang na on a given measure ( or measures ) composed of different types of notes/rests, the rhythm will be determined based on the time signature ( defining how to count the rhythm ). tempo on the other hand is beats-per-minute ( or BPM ) indicating how fast a song is played. whew... kaya pa ba?! nagkakaintindihan na ba tayo... may naintindihan ba kayo?! hehehe next... next next next... RHYTHM

is the relation between the notes, the rests, and the basic "beat" of the song. this includes how long you hold a note, how long you rest between notes, and how you count the notes/rests in relationship to the "beat" of the song. learning to COUNT the notes and rests in relationship to the "beat" of the song is rhythm... the movement of sound through time.

a musician must know how to create tunes and possess the sense of rhythm. oo nga you can now play the right notes/keys but if the timing is not right, then music can be meaningless and unpleasant to the ear.

what you can do to achieve steady rhythms:

LOUD COUNTING. maingay na kung maingay pero this helps. i use this technique lalo na pag bata ang tinuturuan ko. i let them do the counting but not as loud as it would make both our ear hurts haha. it really makes our minds comprehend the rhythmic pattern. take note of the time signature first, if it requires you play the notes in 4/4 meaning 4 counts in every measure, then start counting like a grade 1 student repeating the numbers 1 to 4. haha

CLAPPING or TAPPING. eto mas effective para sa'kin. hindi maiiwasan pero may mga times talaga na may sudden changes in the middle of the piece and this is very challenging pero you can get back in rhythm by clapping or tapping. syempre wag pilosopo, 2 kamay mo na ang nagpe-play ng piano so anong parte ng katawan pa ba ang pwedeng gumawa nito kundi paa or kung malakas talaga ang tama mo yung ulo mo ang ipang-tap mo... araykupo!!! hahaha o wag seryosohin langya baka gawin mo nga lelz... just like the LOUD COUNTING method, ganito rin ang gawin mo only yung feet or hands mo ang gagamitin to set the rhythm.

IMAGINARY PIANO. ah ito walang kahirap-hirap gawin lalo na sa mga walang keyboard/piano sa harapan nila... sanay na sanay sa imaginary piano hehehe... ang ibig sabihin lang nito eh imagine as if you're playing the piece. while sight reading palang alam mo na kung saang part ka mag-speed up or slow down, kelan may change ng tempo, etc. etc. akala mo madali lang 'to? naku!!! madali lang siguro magbasa pero pag application na, dun madalas nagkakatalo hehehe ^_^v

USE OF METRONOME. what is a metronome? this is a music tool which helps with your rhythm and tempo. papakinggan mo lang yung parang "ticking sound" pero 'wag kang matakot hindi bomba yun haha. same rin naman ng pag-count ang pinagkaiba lang meron ng nagka-count for you, papakinggan mo lang pero gagamitin mo pa rin ang isa sa 2 method kanina sa taas, either by loud counting or by tapping.

this time, each notehead will be read as "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and | 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and | 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and" why?! para maging uniform ang interval sa pagbibilang...

NOTE:
an interval is the distance between two notes. intervals are always counted from the lower note to the higher one, with the lower note being counted as one. if the notes are sounded successively, it is a melodic interval. if sounded simultaneously, then it is a harmonic interval. see Piano Lesson No. 4: Intervals and Accidentals to learn more about intervals.

kung saan ka comfortable para ma-attain mo ang rhythm ng isang piyesa dun ka... ang mahalaga matugtog mo ng tama hindi lamang yung mga notang nakikita mo kundi pati yung tamang rhythmic pattern nito dahil kung hindi para kang makakarinig ng pirated na kanta at ikaw ang salarin! hehehe ^_^v

MELODY

is a sweet succession of single tones arranged carefully to give us an interesting and pleasing sound. these are groups of notes played one after the other. it is the tune. it is often the easiest part of music to remember. kung papansinin ninyo ang mga music sheets na ginawa ko... yung VOICE part doon yun ay isang example ng melody...

HARMONY

is the use of simultaneous pitches or chords. it is also a group of notes which are played behind the melody. it supports the melody and gives the music texture or mood.

TEMPO

a term used to describe at what rate the beat is occurring in a musical passage. it is how fast or slow the underlying beat is occurred.

example ng tempo ( pero bihira ako gumamit ng tempo name if you noticed... more on graphics ako ng BPM ) example ♪ = 90... at may math nanaman yan pero hindi ko na i-explain dahil you wouldn't care much about it anyways... hehehe^_^v

Basic Tempo Name - Beats Per Minute Range

Larghissimo — very, very slow (20 bpm and below)
Lento — very slow (40–60 bpm)
Largo — very slow (40–60 bpm), like lento
Larghetto — rather broadly (60–66 bpm)
Grave — slow and solemn
Adagio — slow and stately (literally, "at ease") (66–76 bpm)
Adagietto — rather slow (70–80 bpm)
Andante — at a walking pace (76–108 bpm)
Andante Moderato — a bit faster than andante
Andantino – slightly faster than andante
Moderato — moderately (101-110 bpm)
Allegretto — moderately fast (but less so than allegro)
Allegro moderato — moderately quick (112–124 bpm)
Allegro — fast, quickly and bright or "march tempo" (120–139 bpm)

indicates how loud or soft the music should be performed.

examples ng dynamics na madalas kong gamitin:

pp - pianissimo ( very soft )
p - piano ( soft )
mp - mezzo-piano ( moderately soft )
mf - mezzo-forte ( moderately loud )
f - forte ( loud )
ff - fortissimo ( very loud )
accel. - accelerando ( accelerating; gradually increasing the tempo )

ARTICULATIONS or ACCENTS

are symbols that specify how individual notes are to be performed within a phrase or passage. these are some of the most commonly used accents sa mga sheet music na ginagawa ko.

the note should be shorter than notated, usually half the value.

staccatissimo

it indicates a longer silence after the note, making the note very short. usually applied to quarter notes or shorter.

marcato

the note is played louder or with a harder attack than any surrounding unaccented notes

tenuto

this indicates that a note be played for its full value, or slightly longer.

martellato

the note is played much louder or with a much stronger attack than any surrounding unaccented notes

fermata

an indefinitely-sustained note or chord. it is used to show a halt in tempo.

KEY SIGNATURE

is a series of sharp or flat symbols placed on the staff, designating notes that are to be consistently played one semitone higher or lower than the equivalent natural notes unless otherwise altered with an accidental. to be discussed separately...

WHEW! there you go, more or less you have the slightest idea about the symbols that you see on a sheet music... these are just some of the things you need to get yourself familiar with especially if you really want to learn how to read a sheet music and play the piano. ito ay concised information lamang to think na bago ko 'to naintindihan lahat eh buwan/taon ang binilang ko ( kasi once a week lang ang lessons ko kaya umabot ng taon sencia na tao lang hahaha =p ) yung ibang mga bagay² will be discussed further as we go along this journey hahahaha... hay ka-swerte ninyo nama't babasahin nyo nalang ito... tsk tsk tsk... :)

I HAVE TWO HANDS the LEFT and the RIGHT...

at dahil kamay ang ginagamit para ma-play natin ang piano, bigyan natin sila ng assignment: Hand Positioning / Piano Fingering

ano yan?! wala naman, it's just that it will be a lot easier to play the piano if you know the right and comfortable positions of your hands in playing the keys at para hindi magkarambola at magbuhol-buhol ang daliri mo kung tutugtog ka na sa piano habang nagbabasa ng piyesa.

kung tutuusin sa umpisa lang naman kailangan ito... sa mga beginners talaga especially kids. in case you'd notice sa mga piano exercises for beginners may numbers sa ibabaw ng mga notes, ginagamit lang yun to indicate which finger(s) ang gagamitin to play certain notes. although meron pa rin mangilan-ilan na piano sheet music for advanced piano players na may fingering numbers pero some parts lang naman ng piece... more on guide lang naman yun... pero kapag may one-on-one piano lesson ka with a piano teacher nakuuuuu you have to follow the fingerings provided sa piano exercises or else... lagot! hala! ^_^v

since our hands are symmetric, we'll use number on each finger, thumb being the first finger on each hand...

hand's position: hands should feel na parang may hawak kang tennis ball or stress ball or kahit anong bilog na bagay na pwedeng mahawakan ng isang kamay mo... yung sakto lang... mag-imagine ka... yun yun! dapat naka-curve ng konti ( maliban sa thumb - let it simply lay on its side because of its particular position. wag mo siyang pilitin ganun talaga normal niya... hehe =p ). when you curve your fingers, curve it in such a way na yung lahat ng tips of your fingers eh pantay at nakalapat sa straight surface. 'wag tigasan, 'wag panggigilan ang mga daliri, relax lang. ^_^v

before we begin on reading the notes let's first identify them with names... oo, pinangalanan sila para madaling matandaan, pero 'wag ako ang sisihin ninyo dahil hindi naman ako ang nagbigay ng mga pangalan sa kanila na walang apelyido. weh corny hehehe so, kung ready ka na... game!

PIANO and its corresponding Pitch Names

before we can learn how to play the piano it is vital that we learn the notes on the keyboard and how they relate to each other. at para mas madaling matandaan we'll be using the first 7 letters of the alphabet in naming the 7 white keys ( natural keys ) which will serve as your basis/pattern in naming the rest of the keys ( A-B-C-D-E-F-G ).

as you first look at the piano keyboard, hindi ka pa man nagsisimula parang ayaw mo nang matutunan kasi kung titignan mo, mapapaisip ka na there are lots and lots of notes to learn. but don't worry, you will only need to memorize 12 notes. these 12 notes consists of 7 white keys ( natural keys ) and 5 black keys at kung mapapansin nyo, this group is repeated over and over and each group starts with a "C" note.

NOTE:
just remember the 7 white keys or natural keys... and be sure to memorize its corresponding position(s) sa piano/keyboard... yung black keys naman kasi are just the sharps/flats. kaya ilagay sa utak ang 7 white keys. diyan nakasalalay ang pagbabasa mo ng piyesa hehehe :p

sige, para madaling matandaan ulit... just take note of the 2 black keys na magkasunod and the 3 black keys na magkakatabi... laging first note to your left before ng first black key yun ay ang C at laging nasa dulo ng last black key (group of 3 black keys) ay ang B. malamang hindi ka naman grade 1 noh so makikita mo naman kagad yung pattern ng mga keys, at yan ang kelangan mong tandaan... after mong makita lahat ng C notes sa buong piano keys, you need to locate the position of the MIDDLE C. it's important to know where your MIDDLE C is... kung hindi.... ahhhh bahala ka na sa buhay mo! hahahaha =p

'wag ako ang tanungin ninyo, pero sasagutin ko na rin hehe... kasi ganito yan... if you sit in front of a piano to play, laging sa middle "C" ka matatapat ( or almost hehe ). also middle "C" is in the middle of a staff. but if you'd allow me to dig more deeply about its history, before kasi their ( musicians ) method of naming notes and the earliest methods of notation in labeling notes is from the lowest to the highest using alphabetical letters and C is in the region of lowest audible ( possible ) frequency. C also has no accidentals ( no sharps, no flats ) compared to other pitches. para nga naman siguro maging standard na ang lahat eh middle C na ang gamitin tutal since siya ang lowest eh di sa kanya magstart.... sisihin nyo si C hahahaha... ^_^v

Question:eh paano kung 49 keys lang ang keyboard na gamit ko? or 61 keys?
Answer:
aba hijo/hija pati ba yan po-problemahin ko pa?! hehe teka pala muna, hindi porket sinabi kong gitna, eh kung saang gitna ka nalang matapat yun ang iisipin mong middle C! nakuuuu tatamaan ka sakin ng flying kick haha joke... tignan mo muna yung 5 black keys pattern ( na may group of 2's and group of 3's black keys) pagnakita mo yung mga C notes nilang lahat, obviously ang Middle C eh mejo nasa gitna siya na part ng keyboard at to be sure na yun ang middle C, try to play that C key, obvious naman ang tunog nun eh... hindi matining.... hindi rin mababa.... hindi bawal i-testing kung nasaan ang middle C so 'wag kang matakot... hindi ka makukulong haha =p

since sa middle "C" nagstart ang pagle-label natin sa keys ng piano, ituloy na natin ang paglabel sa natitirang keys...

so going to the right (higher/thinner sound) it'll be:

C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D-E-F-G and so on and so forth...

kung going to the left ( deeper/low sound ) it'll be:

C-B-A-G-F-E-D-C-B-A-G-F and so on and so forth...

SUGGESTION: para madali ninyong matandaan... get a masking tape and pentel pen and mark the white keys with letters corresponding to the name of each keys.... just the WHITE KEYS okay... kasi yung black keys are just sharps/flats of the white keys... make yourself familiar with those keys let's say in 2 months maximum dapat kabisado ninyo na yung position/location ng keys. then remove the masking tapes... =)

i'm pretty sure you've encoutered these letters na parang combination ng lock sa cellfone hahaha. pero sa mga mas nakakaraming nalilito kung para saan ba itong mga letrang ito... ito'y mga pangalan lamang na in-assign sa lines and spaces ng isang staff... these same names ang ginagamit natin sa mga notes nakalagay sa isang staff.

ang staff ay composed ng 5 lines ( 4 spaces ) at para madaling matandaan pinangalanan sila gamit ang 7 letters ng alphabet: A B C D E F G. since ang piano or keyboard kung mapapansin ninyo ay may pattern ( sige tignan mo ang piano keys ) minabuti nalang na gamitin ang first 7 letters ng alphabet kesa gamitin ang 26 letters at magimbento pa ng karagdagang alphabet para lang mapunan ang 88 keys ng piano/keyboard! haha common sense na lang hindi na kelangan ng historical background sus makakalbo lang ako... may explanations yan pero masasayang lang ang dendrites ko pag inexplain ko pa dahil masyadong profound! lalz

o isa pang pilosopong tanong:

kung ang alphabet nagstart sa ABCDEFG.... bakit dito sa music CDEFGAB?

o sige na matahimik ka lang papatulan ko yang tanong na yan... lalz well, starting on an A will give a natural minor scale ( music theory wise... ) at dahil nasa beginners stage nga tayo ngayon mas madaling talakayin muna ang scale na walang accidentals ( e.g. sharps and flats ) at ito nga po ay ang C Major Scale ( oh nosebleed ka na noh... hayaan mo't may topic din about sa Scales, darating tayo diyan! ^_^v )

Question: what's the difference between C D E F G A B C and DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI(or SI) DO?
Answer:
DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI( or Si ) DO are the sol fa or syllable names or can be called as their singing names. we sing the notes with these syllable names. you use these to learn how to sing a piece and get your pitches correct.. C D E F G A B are the pitch names... you do sol fa for the notes of a piece to learn the pitches..

now that you're familiar with the pitch names of the white keys or natural keys ( ie. C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C ), let's try to read the notes. but first, be sure that you already know the difference between a G-clef and F-clef, a whole note from an eighth note, a half rest from a quarter rest and so on... if you don't know what i'm talking about, naku for sure you skipped my Symbols and Terminology Section. tsk tsk... ang hirap kaya magformulate ng lesson plan na crash course ang dating... kaya kung ako sa inyo read it from the very first page... now na! hehe sige kain muna ako habang ginagawa nyo yan...

Question: Why do we need to learn how to read sheet music?
Answer:
actually, it isn't essential to learn how to read sheet music in order to play most instruments, in this case a piano. however, the ability to read music is essential if you'd like to play music that you don’t already know since it allows you to play any piece of music correctly even if you've never heard it before or if you'd like to play with other musicians who read music tulad nalang sa isang orchestra. kung ano man yang rason ninyo, for sure most of you are here because you want to play your favorite song sa piano kaya eto ka't nagbabasa ngayon dito... tamaaaaa =p so sige ituloy ang ligaya....

PITCH NAMES and its POSITIONS in PIANO
di ba sabi ko last time, you will only need to remember the 7 white keys / natural keys ( with their pitch names and/or sol fa names ) and its position?! nako!!!! if you don't know it yet, utang na loob... i-memorize mo na dahil wala kang maiintindihan sa mga susunod kong lessons na ilalagay dito kung hindi mo alam man lang ang 7 white keys na yun!!! go back to Piano Lesson No. 1b: Name that Key and Piano Lesson No. 1c: Pitch Names on a Staff now na!!!!

Question: why do we need to know only 7 white keys out of 88 keys?
Answer:
like what i've mentioned last time, repetitive kasi ang 12 keys ( 7 white keys including 5 black keys ) na yan sa piano, kaya para hindi ka mahilo at malito only 7 white keys ang kelangan mong matandaan dahil may pattern naman siya sa piano same goes sa music sheet...

looking at a sheet music, you'll see these common symbols as seen on figure 2a.1: a grand staff, treble clef and bass cleff, measure, bar lines, key signature, time signature, rests and noteheads or notes tama ba?! if you don't any idea sa mga pinagsasasabi ko please go back sa first page... if familiar ka na then let's move on...

what you see on the above picture ( figure 2a.1 ) is a common C Major Scale ( disregard muna the value ng whole notes, i'm just using it for illustration ). one for the TREBLE STAFF ( for the right hand ) and the other for the BASS STAFF ( for the left hand ).

Question: Why do we need Clefs?
Answer:
it's like asking why do we need money? hehe a CLEF is for a sheet music parang PERA na kailangan natin to buy goods/stuffs/foods/etc. hanep ba sa analogy? may koneksyon ba? labo di ba? lelz... well actually it makes it much easier to read and play music, since they allow composers to shift the location of notes on the staff to best accommodate the range of pitches that a given instrument typically plays. as a result, music can be written using fewer ledger lines, which makes it easier to read. imagine kung ang clef lang na gagamitin mo eh G-clef lang eh yung note pala na kailangan mong basahin at i-play eh galing pa sa 3rd octave to your left sa piano... eh di ang daming LEDGER LINES nun... yung isang page ng bond paper baka one note lang maisulat mo hindi ka man lang nakabuo ng piyesa... o di ba... crazy!!!! ^_^v that's why Clefs are essential in music notation...

remember:
in a staff there are 5 lines and 4 spaces. after a line there's a space then a line again then space and so on... so, for instance nakakita ka ng isang staff... the first symbol that you'd look for is..... the CLEF symbol...

halimbawa G-clef...
laging paka tandaan na kapag sinabing TREBLE CLEF, ang G-clef symbol ay naka-position sa 2nd line ng isang staff counting from the bottom or kung galing sa top ang pagbilang mo it's on the 4th line...

or kung F-clef naman ang nakalagay sa isang staff...
always remember na kapag sinabi namang BASS CLEF, automatic ang F-clef symbol ay naka position sa ika-fourth line of staff counting from the bottom or 2nd line from the top...

oh ito para madali mong malaman which is which when it comes to reading notes in a music sheet... always start with the MIDDLE C in a staff

Middle C = 1st ledger line below the Treble Staff ( ledger line yung nilagagay kapag wala na sa normal staff yung mga notes )

D = 1st ledger space below the Treble Staff
E = 1st line (normal ledger line ng isang treble staff)
F = 1st space
G = 2nd line (kung saan nakaposition ang G-clef)
A = 2nd space
B = 3rd line
C = 3rd space
D = 4th line
E = 4th space
F = 5th line
G = 1st ledger space above the Treble Staff
A = 1st ledger line above the Treble Staff
and so on...

same din para sa bass clef, start ka muna sa Middle C ng Staff... don't get confused about the Middle C of Treble Clef and the Middle C of Bass Clef... iisa lang yun. parehas na middle C. ang pinag kaiba lang nitong 2 Clefs is that if the piano notes are located on a Treble Staff, it will be played above the middle C. if the piano notes are located on a Bass Staff, it will be played below the middle C.

TIP:
i suggest pababa ang gawin mong pattern sa pagbabasa ng notes para sa Bass Clef... let's start from

Middle C = 1st ledger line above the Bass Staff
B = 1st ledger space above the Bass Staff
A = 1st line of a Bass Staff counting from the top (or pde ding 5th line of a Bass Staff counting from the bottom kung saan ka comfortable dun ka!)
G = 1st space of a Bass Staff from the Middle C position
F = 2nd line (where the F Cleff is positioned)
E = 2rd space
D = 3rd line
C = 3rd space
and so on and so forth...

just focus from the MIDDLE C which is the very first note that you'll see in Figure 2a.1. tulad ng ini-illustrate ko, ang middle C sa piano is also the middle note sa isang grand staff. going up or to your right, tumataas din ang key, siyempre going down pababa naman ang key. so kung babasahin mo ang piyesa, after ng middle C ang next nya ay D then E and so on... or kung pababa after ng middle C ay B then A and so on...

hindi parin gets, let's try another illustration... let's use pitch names instead...

take a look at this picture, alternating ang position ng pitch names sa lines and spaces ( i.e. Treble-Clef: after ng Middle C, which is the first ledger line below a staff) you'll see the first ledger space below the staff kung saan pitch name D is positioned. next 1st ledger line of the staff eto naman yung pitch name na E, and so on...) to locate it sa isang piano, starting sa middle C, position your right hand and play one by one the pitch names/key going to your right... be sure to memorize where the middle C is located, or the G or the B... do the same with your left hand this time going to your left. tandaan kapag going to the left ang scale it's C-B-A-G-F-E-D-C... or DO-TI-LA-SOL-FA-MI-RE-DO...

ok fine iisa-isahin ko na. totoo na ito. at tignan mong mabuti...

NOTE:
tandaan ang rules sa pagi-identify ng pitch names sa isang staff... since ang pitch names is repetitive ( i.e. CDEFGAB then CDEFGAB then C ulit ) pagdating sa isang staff yung position niya is in-progression din, alternating the lines and spaces... so, beyond the first 7 white keys or natural keys ( starting from middle C ) ang next nya is C ulit which is located on the 3rd space ng treble clef staff.

for instance ( from figure 2b.5 )
B is on the 2nd ledger space above the treble clef staff.
F is on the 5th line ng treble clef staff.
A is on the 2nd ledger line below the treble clef staff.
E is on the 3 ledger line above the treble clef staff.

*ledger lines are created kapag yung mga notes eh wala doon sa loob ng nasasakupan ng NORMAL STAFF ( 5 lines and 4 spaces )

for bass clef go figure it out...

basta tandaan na sa pagbabasa ng Pitch Names / Notes sa staff, always look for the Clef being used: kung G-clef ba or F-clef... lagi yan!

for instance itong Figure 2b.7, F-Clef ang ginamit dito sa staff na ito or Bass Clef kung tawagin ang buong staff na yan... start identifying the position of the F note {(i-base mo sa F-clef which is positioned on the 2nd line ng bass clef staff from the top... bakit from the top? kasi nga po kapag nasa bass clef, starting from the Midlle C lahat ng notes going to the left eh pababa na yung pitch at pabalik din ang pitch names (ie. CBAGFEDCBAGF etc).}.. kaya from F note (2nd line of staff from top or the 4th line from the bottom bahala ka kung san ka masaya magstart magbilang hehe :p) paakyat, is paakyat din ang pitch names so F then G then A, B, C or from F note pababa ang next is F to E then D then C, etc. para mas madali kapag BASS CLEF understood ang pagbibilang eh manggagaling sa top ng staff kung nasan sinimulan ang middle C.)

ang explanation dun sa figure 2b.7 is:

C = 2nd space ng bass clef staff
F = 1st ledger space below the bass clef staff
B = 3rd ledger space below the bass clef staff
D = 2nd ledger space above the bass clef staff
G = 4th ledger space below the bass cleff staff

*laging alamin kung F-clef or G-clef dahil kung hindi, magkakamali ka na sa pagbabasa ng notes sa isang staff. paulit ulit ko na itong sinasabi... siguro naman matatandaan mo na itong paalala kong ito ^_^v
