Before and After TV Cabinet Makeover

Some of you know how much I love a makeover and if I had more hours in the day I would be making over everything and anything I could get my hands on. I did this craft cabinet last year and my filing cabinet a few years back. So my latest project was a new TV cabinet, I was watching a lot of Sarah's House and she loves to Two Pac everything. It is the same process that is used for kitchen cabinets making it super durable and glossy. I bought this cabinet for $40 on ebay and then hunted down a two pac guy in Geelong.

The next thing was deciding on a colour which was agonising. My heart was telling me it wanted bright yellow and my head was trying to fight it, in the end my heart won and I am so glad because I LOVE the result. It has changed the whole feel of the room. I have had to add a few yellow decorative items to tie it all in which has been fun. So bright and cheery in these cooler months. I wasn't going to post it until I had knobs for the drawers but I am being super slow on making a decision and it could be a while. So what do you think?

I am just a teensy bit, no really, really super duper excited about having had my first Piccadilly Market video made.

Loving the work of all my amazing stallholders that got to feature as well as everyone who didn't. You all make it what it is today.

I am also digging the smooth sounds of Andy Pobjoy who was singing live at the last event and will also be entertaining us on the 29th of July.

Has that got your interest?

This is a bizarre topic to talk about and to even blog about but I just HAD to let you know about this ridiculously, amazing product no matter how odd or uncomfortable it is to do so.

I don't believe anyone out there appreciates a stinky loo and what I find even worse is a rose smelling stinky loo. The pretty smelling sprays are just an overlay of what lurks beneath so it is a sickly combination of the 2.

I have to say I was a bit sceptical when I read about this product but holy cow it really does work, it is beyond amazing and I think a law should be passed that all bathrooms worldwide be equipped with a bottle of this magic. I do not believe I have ever been this excited about a bathroom product before.

The one I have is Poo-Pourri Crap Shooter...don't you just love the name?

Luscious Ladies Lunch at Loam

When one works from home some people tend to think we live a life of leisure and that it is all fun and games which could not be further from the truth. I would not change it for the world but it is hard work and requires plenty of discipline and can be very lonely. Most days I am locked away in my office on my own wondering what the rest of the world is up to.

One of my BFF's Peggy is the same and last year we decided that we needed to take some time out and celebrate the fact that we do run our own business and go out for a fancy pants lunch once a month. We put on our Sunday best and a bit more make up than usual and off we go. Months ago we booked Loam in Drysdale which has been on the wish list for quite some time but never seemed to happen. It was looking a bit scary there with sick kids but we managed to get everyone healthy and off to school.

I love the fact that we can drive 20 minutes out of Geelong and be out in the country and be treated to such a beautiful spot. Loam recently won best regional restaurant in Victoria making it extra fabulous.

The building is set amongst the olive groves and has a lovely view through the huge glass windows. It was a cold day so the fire was burning and we were in heaven. I really like that they don't cram the tables in so we didn't have to listen in on all our neighbours chit chat.

The idea at Loam is that you are given a card listing what is in season for the month and the items highlighted in black is what you may get served. We were given a few minutes to peruse and see if there was anything we didn't eat. We were both happy with the entire offering and were happy to be fed whatever came our way. We did however need an explanation of 2 items, Salsify which is an edible European plant of the daisy family, with a long root like that of a parsnip and Samphire a European plant of the parsley family that grow on rocks and cliffs by the sea.

There was a choice of a 4, 7 or 10 courses that could be matched with wines if desired. We chose the 4 course and this is what we got.

This is what we received for starters, I just adore the presentation of the local Port Arlington mussels in the tin and they were divine.

Course Number 1 :

Marron, melon, turnip, macadamia and celery, it was an incredibly lovely, delicate dish.

Course Number 2:

Snapper, tomato seeds, salted lemon and samphire (amazing flavour)

Course Number 3:

Pork jowl, watercress, pear and lettuce hearts

Course Number 4:

Berries, rhubarb, pine needle yoghurt, (yum), wild fennel and milk

We finished with these delightfully teensy delicious morsels of lemon tart

We thoroughly enjoyed our Luscious Ladies Lunch out at Loam and would go back in a heart beat. It is a perfect special occasion restaurant and would be a great impressive date spot. I would very much like to do a 7 or 10 course matched with wines and a driver on hand.

The service was impeccable, our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable and seemed very passionate about the food which is always a great sign of a good establishment.

If you decide to go you will need to book months in advance but is well worth the wait.

A perfect Autumn Market Day

Once again we were blessed with a perfect market day.

We shared the waterfront with the MG car show and the men in coloured skivvies being The Wiggles of course, making it a very busy day. Twice we had a sea of Dorothy the Dinosaur Balloons making their way through Deakin.

From 10am till about 1.30 it felt as if the whole of Geelong had come down to check us out. Great energy and atmosphere accompanied by the fabulous Andy Pobjoy who entertained us for a few hours with his smooth tunes.

The amazing talent on display was again enjoyed and commented on by so many people. I love seeing my regular stallholders being swamped by their very loyal customers as well as all the new exhibitors receiving lots of warranted attention.

Thank you to the lovely and adorable Penny and Laura from Oh! Hello Geelong who came down and checked us out and posted this lovely review. Thank you to all the other peeps that came and said hello.

Here is a small snapshot of the day and what was on offer.

The next market is on July 29th and will be a lovely place to come out of the cold of winter and warm yourself up with a spot of shopping. I look forward to seeing you there.

Roving Reporter Jonah takes a Ferry Trip

A couple of weeks back I was invited by Searoad Ferries to come and check out their new child friendly services (see more info below). It was Geelong Baby Market Day so I could not attend. I sent my son Jonah instead to report his experience.

How old are you Jonah? 8 years old

Who went on the boat with you? My Dad, Sisters, Nana and Poppy

What was your favourite part? When we were out at sea surrounded by water.

Do you think it would be fun for other kids? Yes, lots of fun things to do, we could do drawings and they would like the view and all the things you see on the way.

Did you see any Pirates? Yes, I saw one Pirate called Benito. He gave out chocolate treasures and we got to have a photo with him.

Did you do anything in Sorrento? Yes it was really fun, we walked up the hill and had lunch and delicious Vanilla Slices from Just Fine Foods...yummy!!!!

Can you buy food on the boat? Yes, they have a cafe.

Would you go again? YES

We take the ferry a few times a year and love it. I wish the car was a little cheaper to take and then we would do more day events on the other side like my fave Red Hill Market. I do however think the foot passenger cost is really reasonable for a fun day trip. It feels like you have done a big exotic trip and it feels special. The last Sunday of the month they have a High Tea which sounds fun. I kind of wished they had have brought me a slice of the legendary vanilla slice home.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY FUN

As every parent knows finding something new to do during the school holidays is

always a challenge. Every day is a holiday for the kids when you travel on

Searoad Ferries. There is a drawing corner on the MV Sorrento, a children’s

playground on the MV Queenscliff and plenty of deck space to explore. Would be

pirates may spy dolphins and ships as they pass by.

The Imaginarium Project

A few weeks ago I started to get a few messages that I had to go check out this new place called The Imaginarium Project and that it was my kind of place. I do love that my readers know me so well. I have been away for most of the holidays and only managed to make it down yesterday.

Can I just say that it was love at first sight. This is totally my kind of place. Infact I could pack my bags and move in immediately. Its kooky, quirky and utterly fabulous and has a great ambience.

I overheard Mums telling their kids they really had to go as they had been there since 10am and this was at 4pm. This is definitely not a place to pop in, its a stay a while place.

The main theme is Alice in Wonderland which had me weak at the knees and wishing this was around for my girls 6th birthday last year which was an Alice theme. You can go through the rabbit hole into an upside down room which is to have more added to it soon. Then there are themed rooms, one is Wild West and has dress ups, toy guns, saloon bar, jails etc. So fantastic for imaginative play. Then there is a great Pirate Room complete with boat, games and a cave with treasure. Enter if you dare into the Halloween Room that is dark and filled with creepy crawlies.

Near the main section is a glow in the dark chalk room that was pretty damn cool.

The main cafe area has a huge mural of the Mad Hatters Tea Party and then there is another little section of to the side that is just divine and perfect for a tea party and not just for kids. I am seriously considering a grown up get together (any takers?) Very cleverly Nicky who runs this amazing place has put the gated 0-4 play room so Mums can sit back and relax in Wonderland with a cuppa whilst their little ones are being creative. This is how my tea was served...

Did I mention that there are gorgeous party girls in each section in costume checking all is OK and running some fun games? Free Face Painting by Alice herself was a bonus and the Queen of Hearts was doing some limbo and statue games.

Whilst we are there a piñata was hung to provide even more fun.

I can't begin to tell you how amazing this is, it is a dreamland for children and adults too.

Nicky is hatching many more ideas including a room I am super excited about...I will give you a hint at the bottom of this post. There are plans for a revolving room where the theme will change.

Look out for some fundraising events in the near future. A close friend of Nicki's son sadly died from cancer which prompted her to create the project and she wants to start a foundation and raise much needed funds. A girl after my own heart. She told me they had a group of deaf children come through who were in awe of everything. Makes my heart sing with joy.

Two Women Who Inspire Me

Women are amazing creatures and only a women can truly appreciate another women's uniqueness and awesomeness.

I want to talk about two women who inspire me. I am not talking about women the whole world knows about but everyday women who have gone and dreamt the impossible and made things happen. One I have known all my life and the other I have just met.

Meet Mira Stanislawska-Meysztowicz who is one of my Mums dearest, best and most crazy friend. For the first 18 years of my life she was like a 2nd Mother and I am sure knowing her has rubbed off on me and helped me chase my dreams and believe in myself. She is one person other than my fabulous Mum who always told me to follow my dreams and my heart. Mira moved to Poland over 20 years ago and discovered her passion and that was to make a difference in this world and protect the environment.

For nine years she has led the Clean Up the World campaign in Poland, as well as many other pro-ecological activities. In 2001 Mira was awarded a Knights Cross Order of the Revival of Poland. The children of Poland also awarded her with the Order of Smile in 2002.

I was so excited to catch up with Mira yesterday on her annual trip back to Australia. I love that in the latter part of her life ( I dare not disclose her age) she looks as young as she did 20 years ago and that she still has such incredible passion in all aspects of her life.

On Friday I attended a most amazing one day workshop where I was lucky enough to meet with one of the speakers Cathy Burke. Cathy is another awesome everyday woman who is making a massive difference in the lives of others. She is the CEO of The Hunger Project in Australia.

The Hunger project believes in self reliance, they are not about raising funds and sweeping in on a white horse with millions of dollars. Instead they believe that people have the ability and more importantly the desire to be self-reliant. Their goal is to end world hunger by addressing peoples attitudes and once their mindset has changed, they begin action through skill building and helping with achievable projects. They work at a grassroots level by finding leaders within the local community to help empower women and give them a voice.

They work in Africa, India, Bangladesh and Latin America.

I could go on and on but I urge you to watch this video for a greater understanding.

Cathy Burke and I clicked and felt a kindred spirit in each other and will be working together in the future to keep getting the word out far and wide about what The Hunger Project does. I so love this organisation and what it stands for and would love for Piccadilly Market to get involved so watch this space peeps.

Happy New Year Peeps

Hasn't wallpaper come a long way since I was a child?
I did have a gorgeous blue and white Laura Ashley wallpapered bedroom that I adored but other than that my memories of wallpaper are terrible. We moved into one house where there was purple and black velour swirly wallpaper that made me feel dizzy. It didn't last long but the memory has.

Fast forward 30 years and the options are endless and deliciously gorgeous.

Christmas Traditions

Well that's it for another year. I hope you all had a wonderful festive season with your family and friends.

I LOVE this time of year, as soon as the tree can go up it does and the Christmas Carols start for the whole month of December and the excitement builds. The Carols by the Bay would have to be the kick off for the season for my family. We go every year with friends, have a picnic dinner and feel grateful for where we live and what we have.

My family has a Polish background, both parents migrated with their families to Australia and I am very thankful to my beautiful grandparents for making sure that their Polish traditions were celebrated by the family and continue to do so after they departed. There are some things that have been Australianized which is also nice.

I always take a Ho Ho Ho photo every year which the kids for the first time reminded me about this year. I hope this will continue through to adult hood.

We always have Borscht(Beetroot Soup) with Uszka (tiny mushroom tortellini) on Christmas Eve also known as 'Wigilia'. My grandmother always made it but after she passed away my Mum makes the soup and all the women and kids get together in mid December and make the uszka together which is fast becoming a new favorite tradition.

My children all LOVE the soup and had 2 big portions this year and are already looking forward to next year when they get to have it again.

In Poland there is no meat eaten on Christmas Eve. Carp is the chosen fish which I am not fond of and have vivid memories of helping kill the Carp the year I was living in Poland. So we have chosen not to follow that custom and we do the Turkey and Ham but will always have some seafood for nibbles.

One of the most beautiful and revered Polish customs is the "breaking of the oplatek". It is a thin wafer, made of flour and water and is white. They used to be baked and distributed from house to house in the parish during Advent. Now they are produced commercially and sold in religious stores.

The use of the Christmas Wafer is practiced not only by native Poles in Poland, but by people all over the world whose ancestors came from Poland.

The eldest member of the family reaches for the wafer, breaks it in half and gives one half to someone else, this is normally my Mum and her sister. Then each of them breaks a small part of each others piece and kiss each other and wish each other good health, joy and happiness, not only for the holidays but for the years to come. This is then continued amongst everyone who is present. I really enjoy this tradition the most and my children now also love participating.

We then sit down to a delicious meal, followed by kolendy (Christmas Carols). My grandmother and her 2 daughters would always sing a very moving song called Jesus Maleszenki (Baby Jesus)

This year the next generation(mine) also joined in. We then get to start opening our family presents which of course the children are very excited about. We have a children's Kris Kringle where they put in their list and get something from it from the family. Mine were over the moon to all get exactly what they wanted.

The tradition I have begun with my children is to make a gingerbread house every year that we make with carols blaring and lots of laughter. We are getting fancier as each year goes by. We then take it to Xmas Eve and the kids smash it down.

As a single parent I find Christmas Day very difficult when my children leave with their Dad. I am very blessed that my family celebrate on Christmas Eve so I never miss out but I still find the day tough without them.

This year I decided to volunteer at the Salvation Army lunch in Corio and am so pleased I did. I love being able to give back to my community and if I made someones day just a little brighter by serving them a meal and sitting and having a chat with them then it is all worth it.

I have come away from the experience feeling very fortunate that I am who I am and that my parents brought me up making me believe I could be and do anything I wanted to and that they gave me the tools to be able to live my life the way I do.

Christmas Cookie Success

Have I ever told you how much I LOVE Christmas? It is my favourite time of year and now that kids are getting older it gets more and more fun as the years go by. We had a blast decorating the tree even though i may have been just a little controlling about what decos went where.

Last night we did the Xmas lights around Geelong which sure was an eye opener. People really do get into the spirit.

Today we had a christmas cookie day and I have always struggled to find the right recipe for a perfect biscuit AND I have had issues with finding a perfect icing that held its colour, was glossy and dried hard. Guess what????? I achieved on both levels today.

Very happy with my Cookie Christmas Tree which is a gift for our neighbour and we all had a blast decorating the rest.

The Best Market yet

When it is pouring with rain all day and temperatures have dropped dramatically and you have a huge market the next day with a bunch of outside stalls, one can start to stress.

Luckily for me I have a very good relationship with the weather gods and away went the rain and out came the sun and we had a magnificent day. This was most definitely the best Piccadilly market event to date. It is hard to know exact numbers but it was agreed amongst various people that it was around the 6500 to 7000 mark.

The doors opened at 10am and people came in their droves and continued for most of the day.

The courtyard was bustling with outdoor stalls and Le Sausage did a great job of feeding the masses which included plenty of tired Run Geelong participants.

As usual the quality of wares available were amazing and I am sure a lot of people are going to be very happy with what they find under the Christmas Tree this year.

Our New Halloween Tradition

In my previous post I mentioned that this year the Pako retailers did not get on board with the Trick or Treating so Peg and I decided to create our own. We came up with the tags that we popped in all the mail boxes with ribbons and hoped for the best.

We were so pleased with the street's response and the kids had a blast and they all thought it was better than Pako. Yeh!!!!! The lesson learned is....What do you do when life gives you lemons? You make lemonade.

We had one guy dress his house in cobwebs and answer the door with a mask on and a smoking cauldron that the kids had to put their hands in to grab a mystery treat. One lovely lady made gorgeous decorated cupcakes.

So we hope we have started a long standing tradition that will get bigger and better every year. I hear people poo poo Halloween and wish it stayed in America. It did not originate in America, you can read up on the history here. I am so glad that there are people who LOVE having it here. It is such fun for the kids to dress up and roam the streets passing other kids and getting to know their neighbors. Pure Childhood Fun.

Once again my kids start the 365 day countdown till next year.

Sadly the retailers on Pako have decided not to host their annual Trick or Treating event on Monday. My friend Peg and I have some super devastated kids. I have been contacted by a few people about it after they had read my post about it last year, so lots of unhappy kids.

To keep the troops happy we came up with this great idea for our local street. Feel free to use this idea in your local street.

Planning for Halloween

We all go a little crazy in this household for Halloween, my many years living in the States sure helped in making me love a day that is pure fun and gives us a reason to dress up. We spent yesterday planning our outfits, there is a little bit of scare happening.

I happened across these amazing cupcakes on Glorious Treats. So need to start collecting jars right now and find some spare time.

My Little Jedi E Magazine

You know how much I love an e-magazine and I have posted here about quite a few. Here is another awesome one I stumbled across yesterday after seeing this most amazing Willy Wonka party featured on the amazing Amy Atlas blog.

How divine looking is that cake?

Each page is filled with divine products, styled parties, people etc. Hop on over and take a peek. There is also a great interview with Amy Atlas, the woman just oozes style.

The mag makes me want to start planning the girls 7th birthday in no less than 11 months time. Perhaps I better stick with Master J's in December.

This is what she was most proud of which made me laugh and laugh when I read it during the week.

I made my boyfriend's best friend an Eric Morecombe doll for his birthday - it was the first plushie I'd made and I was really happy with the results! Then I made my boyfriend a Tommy Cooper doll because he felt left out! :)
