Four-time Australian surfing champion Mark Richardson was medically evacuated from Bali to Darwin, Australia on September 27, 2023 after suffering from internal bleeding.

Richardson was admitted to a hospital in Denpasar, Bali on September 16 after falling ill. He was diagnosed with internal bleeding and required a rare blood type A negative, which was unavailable in Bali.

Friends and family issued a desperate plea for donations of the rare blood type, but were unable to secure enough to stabilize Richardson for medical evacuation.

On September 27, Richardson was medically evacuated to Darwin on a LifeFlight aircraft. He arrived in Darwin in critical condition and was immediately transferred to a hospital.

Richardson's condition has since improved and he is now stable. He is expected to make a full recovery.

The cause of Richardson's internal bleeding is still unknown.
