Saddle Up Quilt – click here to download the pattern

I designed the Saddle Up Quilt for the American Spirit collection by Kathleen Hill for Studioe Fabrics. It measures 50” x 62-1/4” and the blocks finish at 6″, 12″, and 12-1/4″. The prints feature lassos, denim patches, galloping horses, plaid, cowboy hats, and other equestrian-related icons.

The denim print is used both on the narrow border and binding, framing the quilt center and giving it a modern flair.

The quilt design includes four basic fabrics from the Peppered Cottons collection to lighten the overall look and emphasize the beautiful prints.

The star blocks are very easy to make and highlight the print in the center by placing the light cream fabric on the 3-fabric hourglass blocks. The star legs feature darker fabrics to provide contrast and draw the eyes to the light blue fabric.

Since I used different fabrics on the outside, I wanted to keep the center of the stars the same to connect the blocks on those rows.

Follow this easy step-by-step photo tutorial and learn how to paper-piece the sun block. You will become a paper-piecing pro! Make one and use it as a wall hanging, add a few to your quilt, or make a whole quilt with it.

I made this 10″ block to test a pattern I was writing (I trimmed it slightly after I took the photo). I used these fabrics (not oranges or yellows) because I am trying to get more blocks ready for a sampler quilt with this collection. It came out gorgeous (if only I had pressed it better).

I find that when I use starch on certain blocks, the seams look funny. Does it happen to you, too? Once I learned to use starch on finished blocks, I never stopped. Oh, well. I work with colorless Best Press, which I purchase by the gallon. Why? I starch all the fabrics before I cut them for a project (never before I store them), and then every block. I do not starch the quilt top once I finish it.

So, are you ready to see how I made this block? It is very detailed, so you won’t have any trouble making yours.

We always need ideas for quick projects, and this one is super fast!

Ladies Love Flowers – click here to download the pattern

I designed Ladies Love Flowers for the Love Bugs collection by Janet Nesbitt for Henry Glass Fabrics. It measures 53″ x 53,” and the blocks finish at 6″. The ladybug blocks on the corners are fused and machine appliqué. The fabric pieces are easy to manage, so you will whip them up quickly.

As always, I worked with The Electric Quilt Company’s EQ8 software to create this project. Once I get an idea for a quilt, I can audition blocks, fabrics, and layouts to my heart’s content. Can’t work without it.

The colors in the Love Bugs collection are romantic and soft, reminding me of a calm day spent puttering around the garden. The amazing textures and varied scale of the prints are a quilt designer’s dream! Janet Nesbitt is a veteran fabric designer, so she knows what to include in her collections to help us make gorgeous projects. I am sure you’ve made quilts with her darling fabrics!

This collection is already in stores – let’s rush to replenish our fabric stash.

Turn the blocks this way and that, and voilà!

USED WITH PERMISSION FROM AMERICAN PATCHWORK & QUILTING®.
©2025 MEREDITH OPERATIONS CORPORATION. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

Happy Day! My quilt, Rainbow Petals, was just published in the Summer 2026 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting magazine! It measures 46″ x 46,” and the blocks finish at 10″. I worked with Confetti Cottons by Riley Blake Designs and some fabrics from Blank Quilting’s Lower the Volume collection for the background. If you look closely, though, you will find a couple of prints from Moda’s Rainbow Garden collection.

I bet you have a ton of strips that might be perfect for this quilt! I used solids from a pack of 10″ squares I had. I placed the prints so they would resemble budding flowers. Yes, this quilt was inspired by Spring!

It may look intimidating, but the blocks come together fast. You will need to stitch the color and background strips together before adding them to the block, though. The instructions are detailed and easy to follow, so beginners, get ready to have some fun!

It is a cool way to use the panel if you do not want to make a book.

Noah and Friends Book Quilt – click here to download the pattern.

I designed this quilt for the Noah and Friends collection by Lindsey Sagar for Blank Quilting. It measures 44″ x 53″ and the blocks finish at 8″.

The fun thing about making a quilt using a book panel is that it will surely be enjoyed a lot longer than just the book. As children outgrow the story, they will probably focus even more on the motifs, the feel of the quilt, the memories, and the warmth it will still provide.

It is a very easy quilt, making it a perfect project for a beginner quilter. For another easy beginner-friendly quilt, check out this baby quilt I made a little while ago – is a stash-buster, too. As a veteran quilter, I do appreciate projects I can put together fast for those unexpected times when a gift is in order!

I chose a simple block that can be adjusted to fit the size of the pages on panels from other Blank Quilting collections.

It is fat-quarter-friendly, too, so get the pattern and star sewing stars!

Geo Stars. Photo courtesy of Quilter’s World.

My newest quilt, Geo Stars, has just been published in the Spring 2026 issue of Quilter’s World – Precut Quilts Made Easy by Annie’s Attic. The quilt measures 70″ x 70,” and the blocks finish at 20″. The nine blocks come together very fast!

I worked with fat quarters from the Chromatics collection by FreeSpirit Fabrics. I repeated the light blue around the blocks to bring a little harmony to the design, though I used blues from different prints. That color also created a secondary design.

The Chromatics collection has many hues. I chose the brighter fat quarters for this project, saving the other ones for an upcoming quilt. Stay tuned!

The background is from the Lower the Volume collection by Blank Quilting. This collection appears in many of my projects as the motifs are lovely and the colors are very subtle. When I first began making quilts, solid fabrics – white or beige – were always on the block backgrounds, but that was ages ago!

These beginner-friendly quilts will be ready in no time!

Back of the Net quilt. Click here to download the pattern.

I’ve designed two patterns for the Goalbound collection by Urban Essence Designs for Blank Quilting. The first is Back of the Net, using the panel blocks. It measures 44¾” x 44¾”, and the blocks finish at 9¾”. I chose simple alternate blocks to showcase more of the fabrics and continue with the theme. I like how it turned out!

I love soccer and welcomed the opportunity to design for this collection. Not that I can play now – a broken right foot qualifies me for the bleachers, only. I hope I can at least jump with both feet to celebrate when goals are scored. But that is a few months down the road and into recovery. But I digress.

Choose and cut out five of the panel blocks to the size listed in the pattern. You could make a pillow with the remaining block. Then, piece four blocks and alternate them in a 3 x 3 grid.

I opted for simple alternating blocks to keep your eyes focused on the ball!

Download this free quilt pattern with pinwheels, gather your fabrics, and make this easy quilt very quickly.

Spring Twirl – click here to download the pattern

We are having warm weather here in Georgia, and I forgot for a moment that it is still Winter. Before we know it, Spring will be here! Get ready for its beauty by sewing the Spring Twirl, a quilt I designed for Blank Quilting’s Nature’s Symphony collection. The quilt measures 61½” x 75″ (1.60m x 1.90m) and the blocks finish at 12″. The fabrics are already available in quilt stores. Yeah!

Spring Twirl is a great project for confident beginners. Make the half-square triangles for the pinwheels, then add triangles to their sides to form corners.

The sharp contrast between the black print and the background fabric from the Jot Dot collection emphasizes movement and reminds me of the flight of the bees. There is usually a method to my block choices!

If you like pinwheels, check out my quilt Summer Groove, where I placed them in rows. Summer Groove also has machine appliqué, which I am crazy about.

But I digress. Sew the sashing rectangles, add the print squares and the center square, and the center is done!

Download these 2 free quilt patterns with animals now. Choose the panel quilt or the pieced blocks, or make both!

Chirping Crew – click here to download the pattern

Here are two patterns I designed for the Serenade collection by Gina Matarazzo for Henry Glass Fabrics. The first is Chirping Crew, featuring the panel blocks. It measures 43-1/2″ x 43-1/2″ with 8-1/2″ blocks. The whimsical motifs are complemented by one of the collection prints in the center of the quilt, completing the 3 x 3 layout.

Aren’t the woodland animals cute? I cropped the blocks to ensure they would fit perfectly, avoiding the risk of showing only part of their purple border. We’d rather be safe than sorry, right?

I chose the white from the Modern Melody basics collection by Henry Glass for the sashing so the blocks would pop. Also, I used it in two narrow borders to offset the light/dark blue border set. Why white? To bring light to the project!

You could purchase two panels and make bench pillows with each horizontal row of four blocks, or throw pillows with a set of four blocks.

This quilt is an excellent project for beginners, or a quick one for experienced quilters who are running out of time to make those Christmas gifts!

You will make many!

My Town – Click here to go to the Etsy store PiecedBrain

Are you ready for a fast finish? My Town, the quilt I designed for the Mini Metropolis collection by Figo Fabrics, is a breeze to make! It measures 39″ x 59″, with blocks finishing at 5″. The Mini Metropolis collection features vibrant fabrics with prints that will keep babies and toddlers busy as they hunt for their favorite motifs.

I kept the design simple so our eyes could focus on the prints. The My Town quilt will look great in any nursery: on the bed or crib, or as a throw so the children can carry it everywhere they go.

The novelty fabrics will go well with any decor, too. If you will be making this as a gift, you won’t need to worry if it will go well with the recipient’s room.

Boys or girls will have fun discovering the animals, cars, airplanes, and other ‘toys’ showcased on the prints. I chose to frame the prints with bright colors, adding gray to a few blocks to tone everything down, too.
