About a year ago, I remember hearing someone make the comment:

Netflix doesn’t need a marketing department. They just have millions of happy customers that won’t shut up about them.

Well, those millions of customers still won’t shut up about them…except now they’re not quite so happy.

The sad part is the 14-year-old Netflix managed to achieve this in less than three months – first by raising prices, then by altering the business model in a way that severely, and negatively impacts the customer experience. It didn’t help that Reed Hastings, the CEO, tried to disguise the announcement as an apology. As of the time of this post, Hasting’s apology had roughly 26k comments, almost all of them negative.

Everyone in business knows that positive word of mouth is the holy grail of advertising. Whether it’s a friend, family, or another customer that’s spent their hard earned cash on a product or service, people listen to people they trust. A company can spend hundreds of millions – billions – on advertising and marketing and never acquire the goodwill Netflix had. You can’t buy it. You can’t simply put up a Facebook page or create a Twitter account to get it. It grows organically. It grows with happy customers that won’t shut up.

This was printed on a box of Farm House Multi-layer Radish Pies (which taste better than they sound):

Preparing me chicken and rice, old friend,

You entertain me at your farm.

We watch the green trees that circle your village

And the pale blue of outlying mountains.

We open your window over garden and field,

A few days ago, someone in the Pixelmator forums asked about creating a Logo. As I myself am new to Pixelmator, I decided to give it a try and write up the results.

In this Pixelmator tutorial, I’ll show you how to create a Skype-like logo.

Step 0 – Choose a Font

This really doesn’t have anything to do with Pixelmator at all, but it’s always fun to browse through all the available fonts online. Two of my favorite free font libraries are Fonts 500 and neatfonts.

Step 1 – Create Document

Create a new document. For this example I used 640×480. Select black for your foreground color, then select Edit>Fill.

Rename this layer ‘background‘.

Step 2 – Add Text

Select and use the Type Tool. I used white, 96 point, Ariel Rounded Font. Click Layer>Rasterize Type Layer. This converts the text into a rasterized image so we can select it. Rename this layer ‘text’.

Note: After rasterizing the image, I re-spaced the letters to more closely resemble the Skype logo. You can do the same with the Rectangular Marquee Tool and the Move Tool.

Step 3 – Add Border

Select the ‘text’ layer. Click Edit>Load Selection. Create a new layer below ‘text’ and call it ‘border’. Now select the ‘border’ layer. Click Edit>Refine Selection…. We want to Expand the border, so drag the Contract/Expand Slider to the right a bit. I increased it to 13.

To recreate the bulbous look around the text, choose the Elliptical Marquee Tool. Choose the additive selection mode in Tool Options.

Draw a few ellipses around the edges, overlapping the original selection. Choose a color fill, then click Edit>Fill. I used Aqua from the crayon box.

Step 4 – Add Gradient

With the ‘border‘ layer still selected, create a new layer above it. Call this layer ‘gradient‘. Select this layer and click Edit>Refine Selection…. We want a very thin border around the edge of the logo so drag the Contract/Expand slider to the left. I used -3. Select the Gradient Tool and create a new linear gradient.

Click and drag in the direction you want the gradient applied.

Step 5 – Add Text Outline

Because the logo uses white letters against a white to blue gradient, we want to add a slight outline to the top of the letters to provide some contrast. Select the ‘text‘ layer and click Edit>Load Selection. Add a layer above it and call it ‘outline‘ and choose this layer. Pick black as your foreground color. Click Edit>Stroke…. Adjust the Width and Opacity sliders to add the outline. I used 1 Width, 25% Opacity.

Click Command-D to undo the selection. Click Layer>Add Layer Mask. Click the new Layer Mask in Layers Option. Choose the Brush Tool. Using White as the brush color, paint over the bottom half of the letters to mask out the outline. For brush options, I used 45px diameter, 0px hardness, 1px spacing.

Done!

It’s quite easy to create a logo in Pixelmator*. Applying the various methods above, you’ll be able to create the look of almost any logo you can think of. In fact, many logos aren’t even as complicated as Skype’s and consist of only a font and a single, solid color.

For comparison, here is the Skype logo again and the one we just create:

*Ideally, a vector based program should be used in creation of logos because vector images aren’t affected by scaling.

I had a dream last night that I was driving through downtown Fremont in a Flintstone’s-like foot powered car. The place looked nothing like how I remembered and yet everything was familiar to me, as often the case in dreams. People from my past lined the street – friends, people I went to school with, people I worked with, people who I’ve seen once in my lifetime and never gave a second thought to. As I drove down this street in my foot powered car, I waved to these people but nobody waved back. I rounded a corner and saw someone from high school who I had not seen since. I gave him a slight poke to the sternum as a way to say “Hey, what’s up?”. As I did this, I tried to drive away quickly, but my foot got stuck in a rut. There was a brief period of awkward silence – the someone from high school looked at me as if to say, “Why did you poke me for?” When he finally recognized me, his bewilderment turned into nostalgia and the street errupted in laughter as did I. I freed my foot and continued my drive, leaving downtown and the crowds behind. The people slowly became specks in my rearview, the sound of their laughter gradually fading in the distance.
