Underwear model Karolina Kurkova has no belly button. Is a barely-there navel for cosmetic or medical reasons?

The newspapers call it the "riddle of the £2.5m beauty". The beauty in question is Czech supermodel Karolina Kurkova. The riddle is her non-existent belly button.

Its absence was noticed this week when the 24-year-old graced a US catwalk for lingerie giant Victoria Secret. While most of us have an "outie" or an "innie", Ms Kurkova has a smooth indentation (although sometimes a tummy button is airbrushed onto her photos in post-production).

Otherwise known as a navel, the belly button is the rounded, knotty depression in the centre of the abdomen caused by the detachment of the umbilical cord that fed you while in the womb. We all have umbilical cords, so why don't we all have a belly button?

Ms Kurkova has not spoken publicly about how she came to have a smooth navel, and all her agent will say is "she's not an alien".

Prototype 'piercing' restores man's ability to swallow

Surgeon Peter Belafsky had been tinkering with ways to treat oropharyngeal dysphagia--a swallowing disorder that when severe can prevent people from being able to swallow at all--for years.

But it wasn't until he took his two daughters to get their ears pierced--and noticed the woman behind the counter with piercings in her nose, eyebrow, and even cleavage--that he realized how to do it, and a device to manually open and close the esophagus was born.

Described as one of the world's first medicinal body piercings, the experimental device works by pulling on a tiny metal pin extending out of the skin of the patient's neck to move the larynx forward and open the esophagus.

With colleague Gregory Farwell, Belafsky flew down to Uruguay in August to implant the prototype piercing in the throat of an Uruguayan physician and cancer survivor who hadn't been able to swallow for two years; the patient relied instead on a feeding tube after undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments for tonsil cancer. (The device is not yet FDA approved, so they performed the surgery in the patient's home country.)

At a hospital in Montevideo, Belafsky and Farwell spent just 45 minutes suturing the T-shaped titanium device into the cricoid cartilage that circles the trachea and then required that the patient wait a few months before using the device to ensure the incision site fully healed and the device was well-integrated into the cartilage.

"By attaching a tiny titanium rod to a postage stamp-sized plate that we've sewn into the neck cartilage, we've enabled our patient to safely and without pain pull on the device to move his larynx forward and open the esophagus to allow food and liquid to pass," Belafsky says. "It's the first time a person has been able to manually control the entryway to the esophagus."

After monitoring the incision site from afar and then performing extensive testing on the patient at UC Davis in November, the surgeons are now pronouncing the implant a success. Belafsky says that UC Davis has already patented the technology; the next step is to get FDA approval to conduct clinical trials in the U.S., and funding those trials is his primary concern.

"I get constant e-mails from patients who can't eat," he says. "We are hoping for a very wealthy donor to step in and help us."

Meanwhile Daniel Fiandra, the Uruguayan patient, is recovering back in South America, where he will practice swallowing, not to mention drinking, for the first time in more than two years. And all that, Belafsky says, with what "just looks like a small piece of jewelry."

School sued over nose piercing

RALEIGH (North Carolina) - THE American Civil Liberties Union claims in a lawsuit filed on Wednesday that a North Carolina school violated the constitutional rights of a 14-year-old student by suspending her for wearing a nose piercing.
The lawsuit from the state chapter of the ACLU seeks a court order allowing Ariana Iacono to return immediately to Clayton High School, which has kept her on suspension for four weeks since classes started.
The complaint hinges on Iacono's claim that her nose piercing isn't just a matter of fashion, but an article of faith. She and her mother, Nikki, belong to a small religious group called the Church of Body Modification, which sees tattoos, piercings and the like as channels to the divine.
'This is a case about a family's right to send a 14-year-old honour student to public school without her being forced to renounce her family's religious beliefs,' wrote lawyers from the ACLU and the Raleigh firm Ellis & Winters in a brief supporting the lawsuit.
The Johnston County school system has a dress code banning facial piercings, along with short skirts, sagging pants, 'abnormal hair colour' and other items deemed distracting or disruptive.
But the dress code also allows for exemptions based on 'sincerely held religious belief,' and says, 'the principal or designees shall not attempt to determine whether the religious beliefs are valid, but only whether they are central to religious doctrine and sincerely held.' That's where the school stepped over the line, the lawsuit alleges, saying officials repeatedly dismissed explanations of the Iaconos' faith by the family and their Raleigh minister. -- AP

Michael Jackson’s arms were covered with puncture marks, his face and neck were scarred by plastic surgery and he had a bald spot covered by a tattoo, as well as tattooed eyebrows and lips, an autopsy into his death has revealed.

The singer was also suffering from arthritis in his lower spine and some fingers and his lungs were chronically inflamed which might have left him short of breath.

However, the autopsy report showed the 50-year-old singer was generally healthy for his age before he died of an overdose in June.

He was not emaciated and weighed 136 pounds (62 kg), which was within the normal range for his height, and his heart was strong. His kidneys and other major organs were normal.

According to the document his lung condition was not serious enough to be a direct or contributing cause of death.

Dr. Zeev Kain, chairman of the anesthesiology department at the University of California, Irvine, who reviewed a copy of the autopsy report, said: “His overall health was fine. The results are within normal limits.”

The autopsy report showed that Jackson had a 2cm scar behind his left ear and another apparent scar behind his right ear.

He had a scar beside each of his nostrils and a 10cm scar on his right shoulder. There were two additional scars, each about 7.5cm long, at the base of his neck, and smaller scars on his arms and wrist. Dr Kain, who was not involved in conducting the autopsy, said most of the scars appeared to be from plastic surgery.

Jackson also had several tattoos, all of them cosmetic, including dark tattoos in the areas of both eyebrows and under his eyes, and a pink tattoo around his lips.

He was going bald at the front of his head, with his remaining hair described as short and tightly curled.

The bald part of his scalp was darkened with what appeared to be a tattoo stretching across the top of his head from ear to ear.

The report, which was leaked to the Associated Press, also found Jackson was actively producing sperm.

It showed there had been a desperate struggle to save Jackson. He had chest bruising and cracked ribs from CPR and a mechanical device known as a balloon pump had been inserted into his heart to try to restart it.

Jackson died at his rented Los Angeles mansion on June 25 after his personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, administered the anesthetic propofol and two other sedatives to get the chronic insomniac to sleep, according to court documents.

Propofol, normally a surgical anesthetic used in operating rooms, acts as a respiratory depressant and requires constant monitoring.

Apart from propofol and the sedatives the only substances found in Jackson’s system by the autopsy were the local anesthetic Lidocaine, sometimes used to numb injection sites, and ephedrine which is a commonly used resuscitation stimulant.

No other drugs, legal or illegal, were detected, nor was any alcohol.

The coroner's office announced last month that Jackson’s death was a homicide caused by “acute propofol intoxication” with the other sedatives listed as a contributing factor.

Dr Murray is the target of what Los Angeles police term a manslaughter investigation. A decision on criminal charges will come from the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

In a video posted to YouTube, Dr Murray has said: “I told the truth and I have faith the truth will prevail.”

His attorney, Edward Chernoff, has previously said nothing Dr Murray gave Jackson “should have” killed him.

Piercings and tattoos are more common than ever and this is proving to be a challenge for some employers. Body art might be acceptable out of the workplace, but for many companies, it creates issues when the person is out meeting clients.

I personally don't know what all the fuss is about. Tattoos are now commonplace, so who cares? You don’t even look twice when the person serving you has a dragon or butterfly on their arm, or a ring or three through their eyebrow, nose, lip or tongue. It’s never been a turn off for me, and I wouldn’t imagine it would be so for others. Indeed, there are some places where tattoos and piercings would come with the territory. Like for example a trendy bar or eating place. It makes the experience there even better.

The Pew Research Centre in the United States has found that about a third of Generation Next, the generation that grew up with mobile phones, the internet and personal computers, will have a tattoo. Some more research, again out of the US, found that 23 per cent of university students had one to three tattoos, and 51 per cent had one or more piercings (other than earlobes) and yetanother one showed that 32 per cent of Gen Xers have tattoos.

Why are we even talking about it? So many people, from Angelina Jolie to Jessica Alba to Bruce Willis have tattoos. It certainly didn’t hurt their careers.

Still, there is evidence that some members of the public are not altogether comfortable with tattoos. A recent piece in USA Todaysuggests it could be a turn off for some, but not all, in the hotel industry. The most telling part of the piece lies with the comments on the bottom of this piece, suggesting there are still people out there who are put off by tattoos and piercings. Here are just two:

“An employee gets paid to represent the company they work for. If a person has to have "stuff" sticking out of the skin on their face, it doesn't say much for their self-esteem, nor for the opinion of the company they work for. Not meaning to profile, but a person who has "stuff" sticking out on their face more than likely has a point to prove to the public at large, to the government, to their peers, or to people in authority, and whether we want to admit it or not, it's usually in a rebellious manner."

"If you want to get tattoos or piercings that is your individual choice...but with all choices come certain consequences. If you aren't mature enough to accept those consequences...such as not being hired in certain industries or not being taken seriously by others...then you shouldn't be doing anything that permanently scars you and you have to understand that you will not be accepted in every circle.”

And as some point out, there are some tattoos you should never get if you want a real job. These include swastikas, tear drops on faces, certain words like having f on one knuckle followed by the u, the c, and the k on the other fingers and a tattoo that looks like someone has given you a love bite.

Also, much of it might come down to the kind of workplace we’re talking about. Australian management commentator James Adonis reminds us that it really depends on the working environment.

“I'm not sure if the insertion of small pieces of metal through soft skin is responsible for the floundering of workplaces, but I get his point. In customer-facing roles, it can be off-putting for clients to deal with people who look like they had an accident with a stapler. But I can't see the big deal when someone's in an office, staring not at a customer but a windowless wall. Who cares?”

Janet Jackson's piercings again came to the forefront on February 1, 2004 when, during the NFL Super Bowl half time show—in front of 100 million viewers—her top was partially torn off by Justin Timberlake as a finale, exposing a pierced nipple and a decorative nipple shield. According to the Drudge Report, the skit was approved by CBS (right up to the top executives—although they swear this was never in the rehearsals), and MTV who produced the half time show had promised in advance that viewers would see "Janet's shocking moments."

Because this occurred during primetime with many families and children watching, both the CBS switchboards and the police switchboards became immediately tied up. Viewers demanded an explanation, and some went so far as to call for charges to be pressed against Janet Jackson for baring her pierced breast during a family show. The NFL has told MTV that it is "unlikely" that they will produce another half time show in the future.

Justin Timberlake, who did the actual "exposing"—as he sung the lyric "I gotta have you naked by the end of this song"—makes the unlikely claim that it was an accident, calling it a "wardrobe malfunction," saying, "it was not intentional and is regrettable." MTV back-pedaled as well, releasing a statement saying it was "unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional and was inconsistent with assurances we had about the content of the performance."

The one on the inside of her right wrist is a “Sankofa.” This is a concept, supposedly derived from King Adinkera of the Akan people from West Africa. The literal translation means “it is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot.” The idea being expressed is one of learning from the past so that you can move forward with knowledge. The design is an abstract symbolization of a bird flying forward while looking backwards, carrying an egg in it’s mouth (the symbol of the future), but can also be represented as a heart-like symbol, which is the variation Janet sports.

She also has a tattoo in the crease of her right thigh of Mickey and Minnie Mouse engaging in sex, with Minnie giving oral sex to Mickey. Some fan sites claim that this was also tattooed by Ronnie Zulu, however it is not mentioned anywhere on his web site, although he does state he did the other three. Jackson has admitted to having done a lot of sexual experimentation in her 20s and 30s, and that the tattoo of the Disney characters “doing the nasty” as she phrases it, is humorous to her as well as being symbolic that she feels sex is good and should be fun.

If you want to emulate Ms. Jackson or get a tattoo in homage to her, don’t worry, you are far from alone. Her official fan site includes a gallery of pictures of fans who have either gotten designs that she herself wears or who wear tattoos that depict Janet herself.
