Sometimes it’s just a pain to explain to someone who thinks that internet marketing is the same as mlm or network marketing. Just because they both contain the word ‘marketing’ doesn’t mean they’re one and the same. In my side of the globe, even worse, some think that internet marketing is a pyramid or ponzi scheme.

Before I rant on and on with this topic, I’d like to clarify and give some points and share some views on internet marketing and MLM (multi-level marketing or network marketing).

Here’s wiki’s definition on Internet marketing:

Internet marketing, also referred to as i-marketing, web marketing, online marketing, or eMarketing, is the marketing of products or services over the Internet.

The Internet has brought many unique benefits to marketing, one of which being lower costs for the distribution of information and media to a global audience. The interactive nature of Internet marketing, both in terms of providing instant response and eliciting responses, is a unique quality of the medium. Internet marketing is sometimes considered to have a broader scope because it not only refers to digital media such as the Internet, e-mail, and wireless media; however, Internet marketing also includes management of digital customer data and electronic customer relationship management (ECRM) systems.

Internet marketing ties together creative and technical aspects of the Internet, including design, development, advertising, and sale.

Internet marketing also refers to the placement of media along different stages of the customer engagement cycle through search engine marketing (SEM), search engine optimization (SEO), banner ads on specific websites, e-mail marketing, and Web 2.0 strategies. In 2008 The New York Times working with comScore published an initial estimate to quantify the user data collected by large Internet-based companies. Counting four types of interactions with company websites in addition to the hits from advertisements served from advertising networks, the authors found the potential for collecting data upward of 2,500 times on average per user per month.[1]

Wiki on MLM:

Multi-level marketing (MLM), is a form of Network Marketing (however the terms are often used interchangeably). It is a marketing strategy that compensates promoters of direct selling companies not only for product sales they personally generate, but also for the sales of others they introduced to the company. The products and company are usually marketed directly to consumers and potential business partners by means of relationship referrals and word of mouth marketing.[1]

Independent, unsalaried salespeople of multi-level marketing, referred to as distributors (or associates, independent business owners, dealers, franchise owners, sales consultants, consultants, independent agents, etc.), represent the parent company and are awarded a commission based upon the volume of product sold through each of their independent businesses (organizations).

Independent distributors develop their organizations by either building an active customer base, who buy direct from the parent company, or by recruiting a downline of independent distributors who also build a customer base, thereby expanding the overall organization. Additionally, distributors can also earn a profit by retailing products they purchased from the parent company at wholesale price.

Distributors earn a commission based on the sales efforts of their organization, which includes their independent sale efforts as well as the leveraged sales efforts of their downline. This arrangement is similar to franchise arrangements where royalties are paid from the sales of individual franchise operations to the franchisor as well as to an area or region manager. Commissions are paid to multi-level marketing distributors according to the company’s compensation plan. There can be multiple levels of people receiving royalties from one person’s sales.

With internet marketing, you can sell your own product(s) or services or be an ‘affiliate’ in marketing other peoples’ products/services online. By being an ‘affiliate marketer’, i.e. selling other peoples’ products or services, you get a commission from every sale you make. So that’s basically how you can earn as an internet marketer online.

The upside is you can start with just a few hundred dollars to get started ($100-500) or you can even use the net’s free resources to jump start your business for free. Although you can do this just to test your market, in the long run, you need to get your own domain and hosting. You’ll be glad you did.

The hard part is finding the right ‘niche’ that will gobble up your offers. It takes time to gain trust from your readers i.e. if you have a blog or site that you post your offers to. And if you don’t have the right amount of traffic and competition is fierce, then it’s going to be a long uphill climb before you can even find success, if at all.

If you’re just starting out, you need to get that much needed traffic to convert into sales. If you’re looking for instant riches then internet marketing is not for you.

To put it simply –

First and foremost is to find the right ‘niche’ and know your competition; the right mix is when you have high demand for the product and low competition from other sites. Get this wrong and you’ll just be running around in circles.

Get targeted traffic and convert that into sales. You need to know traffic generation techniques such as posting ads, articles, forums, ppc, etc. to get people to visit your site or landing page

Throw in an opt-in feature so you can build a list and really get to know your readers, gain trust and authority so you can use e-mail marketing to further promote offers that you find can help your visitors succeed in making money online even if they don’t visit your site regularly.

If you do everything right with all of the above, then you can succeed with making money online as an internet marketer.

I’m not really a fan of mlm but I’ll just point out a few experiences I had with it.

You earn from direct selling of a company’s products to a buyer and/or downline (recruits) and earn commissions from selling the products as well as getting new recruits that would distribute the same.

You are given a starter kit that would cost from as low as $10 to as high as a thousand dollars depending on the product and/or maybe a membership fee.

What I don’t like about mlm – they don’t really tell you how hard mlm really is if you’re not a salesperson. It’s when after they snag you with the starter kit or membership fee that you’ll find that it’s not all that easy to get people to buy their product(s).

They razzle and dazzle you with the huge profits you’ll get with the so called leverage strategy (left and right downline commissions plus sales - look at the pic above, imagine if you can have that many people as your downline, can you see the dollar signs in your eyes?). And if you’re a bit greedy, then you readily buy in to that dream and get that starter kit and pay up the membership fee. It’s only then that you’ll be faced with the reality that if you have no sales background whatsoever, it’s going to be difficult.

They are not really transparent on this from the get go so I’ll just point out what you really need from the start to even your chances for success.

Unless you have a MILLION friends or prospects that you can convince to recruit or sell products to right from the very start, you’ll surely be disappointed,

You are generally a people person and have a gift of gab of being able to sell ice to an Eskimo,

You have more than enough extra cash for future meetings with potential buyers or recruits, since you’re a ‘business owner’, you shoulder ALL costs and expenses

You can generally read a person if he/she is really interested and a potential self motivated downline so that your efforts won’t be just a waste of time

You personally use the product(s) and are satisfied with using it so you can be a walking billboard for the business

If you don’t have all or majority of the above, especially the first one, your chances of success with mlm is slim to none.

Here’s a heads up in choosing an mlm company:

Know exactly what products the company is selling. If there’s no product just recruitment commissions, then that’s not a legit mlm company.

If you’re not comfortable in selling the items that they have, then it’s not for you.

Always see to it that the company has a proven track record in direct selling. If it has been in the industry for at least 10-15 or more years then you can safely say that it won’t belly up in the first sign of trouble.

Know how you can personally track your sales especially from your downlines.

And lastly, your sponsor or upline should be more than willing enough to find time to teach you the ropes. If he/she disappears after getting his/her commission, then that’s a red flag and not a good sign of things to come.

Ok, one last rant…. What I really abhor is that some in mlm even quote that Robert Kiyosaki earned his riches from mlm! Well, that’s just crap! If they even bothered to read his book – “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”, yes he went into mlm. But he only got into it because he was a shy person and wanted to overcome his shyness in selling. He finally conquered his shyness but mlm did not make him rich as such.

It was his knack for flipping houses (at one point in his life) and looking for the right investments to put his money into that made him rich. He got residual income from his investments that in time gave him the freedom to retire early in life.

This is getting to be a long post, so to recap, whatever it is you choose from either internet marketing or mlm, being properly informed on each of their pitfalls and the strategies you have to do to succeed and carefully aligning your skills to adopt which marketing route to take, can greatly increase your chances for success compared to just going in blind.

With the right information, execution of the system and focusing on your goals, it will just be a matter of time before you reap your rewards as successful marketer be it an internet marketer or a multi level marketer.

After a long weekend in Boracay, Puerto Galera or even in Palawan, we’re back to work in the concrete jungle.

But for those of us who didn’t have vacation mullah, the weekend was just spent watching a marathon of dvd’s we haven’t got time to watch on regular days. One particular movie I did like watching was “The Bucket List” staring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson.

At first I really didn’t think much of the movie but as it moved along, it got quite interesting. Having to face their own mortality, they started to make a meaningful list of things they would personally do before they kick the bucket. It became an adventure of a lifetime.

In the end, both learned much from each other, although coming from different backgrounds, having found joy in the simplest things, their last days made a lasting impact in both their lives and their families. It was their wish to go to the sunset with their eyes closed and their hearts open.

It’s one of those ‘feel good’ movies that would make you think in the end. It’s better to make a list now of the meaningful things we’d like to do when we’re still willing and able rather than wait for the inevitable and it’s already too late.

I made few that I think would be worthwhile doing. Better make a “Bucket List” of your own now before it’s too late.

So what’s yours? Happy Easter!!

In as much that I would like to post a video on Joel Christopher’s Internet Marketing Seminar that I attended last Valentine’s Day and getting the much needed additional bonus Joel promised if we posted one, I’m really not comfortable recording and seeing myself on video. But I’ll still ask him if this review could qualify me for the bonus. So for now, I’ll just do a review of what transpired last Saturday.

.

Internet Marketing MMO highlights:

a.m.
* Job opportunities, internet marketing and what’s best for you’re situation
* Secrets to internet marketing success

p.m.
* Internet marketing business models to choose from
* Carl Ocab’s make money online with a 13 yr old success
* Jojy Azurin’s business model – membership sites
* Joel Christopher’s internet marketing challenge

Job opportunities, Internet marketing, MMO

The seminar started around 9 a.m. and the topic was focused on getting to know what internet marketing was all about and how to get a job online. There’s something for everyone. You can be directly hired, do freelance jobs, or be a business owner/consultant.

The morning was mostly geared towards informing students what internet marketing was all about and how they can jump start their career on one. Judging from the questions the students were asking, I think the subjects they were taking on marketing were mostly focused on traditional brick and mortar concepts. Although it’s nice to know them, marketing on the internet is a different ball game.

I really envy kids today especially the college kids who were invited for FREE and were given the much needed information and a chance to be part of Joel’s vision for the future. If these kids knew that they were sitting on a gold mine, they’ll probably jump on the bandwagon and start getting busy.

When I was studying in UST, high school and college, now don’t ask what year, we didn’t get that much opportunity and besides, if we were even given one, I probably would have not recognized it as such. I was more inclined to just hang out and chill, party and just slack for the rest of the year. When you’re young, you tend to do stupid things and realize it only when you get to a certain age. Hopefully, times have changed for these kids.

From what Joel discussed so far, I can clearly see which direction to go when looking for a job online or finding internet income from the various business models you can pattern your business from. Although it may sound simple at the outset, you really need to have a mission/vision or specific goal to achieve success.

Secrets to Internet Marketing Success

Do you know what Joel’s secrets to internet marketing success are? He mentioned several but I’ll just focus on the ones that you can adopt in whatever business or career situation you’re in.

First and foremost is having a long term goal as well as short term goals. You don’t want to live just meandering through life do you? If you have something to achieve for, plan your life towards getting it.

Find your passion. If you notice, most successful people are passionate in what they do and eventually, they get to a point where working is not really ‘work’ for them at all. They can spend hours on end doing their ‘job’ and not complain about it. And to top it all they get pretty good at it that’s why they get noticed and people pay good money for their services.

This is a bit tricky though especially in the context of internet marketing. If you’re passionate about something but there’s really not much demand for it in your chosen niche, it can be quite frustrating. But if you’re really determined to succeed online, you’ll always find ways and means to coincide your passion with your niche.

The money is in the list or most importantly your relation with your list. I guess every internet marketer knows about this. But for newbies, it’s the process of capturing visitors’ name and e-mail address in exchange for an ezine, special report, e-course, software, etc. By having visitors to opt-in, you’ll get a chance to get to know them better and get them to be your best friends for ever simply because they will be your life blood for success.

Finally, one thing that really stuck to my mind is this – be transparent, be honest. You only have one name and reputation to build and protect. If you don’t have that, no one will even bother to do business with you. Joel also mentioned the 4 “Cs”, i.e. Being committed, competent, compassionate (pay it forward) and congruent (match action with words).

Trust from your visitors won’t happen overnight but as long as you stick to the principles above, eventually, they’ll know that you’re a person they can rely and depend on.

Internet marketing business models

After lunch, Joel then proceeded to discuss several internet marketing business models you can pattern your own business with.

Among those discussed were info marketing, consulting, affiliate marketing, blogging, PPC, lead generation, joint ventures and membership sites.

I thought I already knew PPC or at least a little something about PPC but what Joel was talking about that afternoon was really waaaay over my head. That’s how I felt when I first encountered the term “SEO”. I’m still a newbie after all… There’s one thing I noticed about information on the net, it constantly changes and if you do not keep up with it, you’ll get left behind. Fortunately, Joel gave links for further study.

Resource speakers for that afternoon were Carl Ocab and Jojy Azurin. Carl’s business model – blogging as a source if internet marketing income while Jojy Azurin’s business model was membership sites. I haven’t really thought of membership sites as a way to make money online but he is living proof that it can be done and there’s still a growing market for it. There’s one other pinoy who’s doing this and if I’m not mistaken is a fellow named Ian del Carmen.

Carl Ocab’s make money online with a 13 yr old success

Carl the ‘kidblogger’ is really an amazing kid. Although it was his very first time to speak out in public, I think he really knows what he’s talking about – (SEO, tag line, branding, traffic, monetizing) and I can say for sure that he’s the real deal. How many of us at age 16 can give a 1 hour talk about something that adults still struggle to achieve? I got the chance to talk to him and his dad after the seminar and they’re both down to earth and soft spoken.

It’s not that often that a kid can get inspired to take action at an early age from just a comment or probably a ribbing from his dad. One thing I learned from Carl – be doggone persistent! Even if others say otherwise, I’ll borrow Pres. Obama’s catch phrase here – “Yes we can!”

Jojy Azurin’s internet marketing business model – membership sites

Jojy’s segment on membership sites was an eye opener. There’s still a vast market waiting to be tapped in this area. Although I wasn’t able to personally talk to Jojy after the seminar, I’ll surely be one of those who’ll pester him with regards to sharing his secrets and insights on his area of expertise.

Having a membership site is not as easy to pull of as it seams because you really need to have a highly targeted market, demand and especially valuable and up to date content to make it worthwhile for members to sign in and stay. If you have the three (market, demand, content) and traffic taken care of, then you’ll be on your way to success. You’ll need to do a lot of brainstorming to cover all the bases.

Joel Christopher’s Internet Marketing MMO Challenge

At the end of the seminar, Joel announced that he is giving each participant a chance to finally test if one has got what it takes to be successful online by posing his 30 day challenge. I’ll surely be one of those who’ll give it a try.

I give Joel Christopher’s MMO seminar 4 out of 5 stars. Although Joel tackled as much as he can in a day, there really was not enough time for all of it to be discussed especially for the question and answer portion. But being a generous guy, he invited all participants to a special webinar for the continuation of the q&a. He also gave additional bonuses for all attendees, nice! Plus additional links to get more info on the topics discussed for that day. There’s this one small thing I wished Joel included, maybe a buffet lunch next time?

So for those of you who haven’t attended any of Joel Christopher’s seminar yet, I think his next one is in San Antonio, Texas this coming March and yes folks, Joel always over delivers. So stay tuned for more details.

Yes folks, you’re still viewing the same old PileCentral site, I just replaced my old theme with this new one (below). Although I liked my previous theme (the one on top), it really was time to simplify things on this site.

I’m currently streamlining this site and restructuring the layout to make navigation a bit more user as well as search engine friendly. Although there are search engine friendly themes available for sale, as usual being a cheapskate, I just go for the free wordpress themes available on the net. I base the design, layout and look & feel to the more popular sites and search engine friendly blogs I’ve been visiting lately.

I’m still looking for a nice good background pic for the header though. In the meantime, I’ll just settle for a plain cream-beige color as background. I had a bit of a problem displaying the 125×125 boxes on the right because the original code on theme that displayed the boxes lacked the proper php script tag but after a few tweaking here and there, eventually I was able to make it work.

I initially wanted a magazine type of layout because you could see a lot of posts when you land on the page but the one that I downloaded would not work locally on my pc, unlike the one I have now. I wish they had tested it exhaustively before even putting it up for download.

I also copied a few snippets of code from my previous theme like the display of posts within a similar category at the end of every article before the comment box. I find this useful when I look at other blogs especially when reading on a particular article because it more or less gives you additional information just in case the article you’re presently reading needs more expounding.

And finally I added a plugin – ‘wp-limit-posts-automatically’ that as the name implies displays posts in whatever ‘limit’ you want your article to be displayed - by number of words, letters or paragraph. It’s a nice way of previewing several posts before clicking on one that catches your fancy. Although it’s not the same as the magazine type layout, it will do for now. This also helps the search engines’ robots easily scan/read your site making indexing a lot faster and search engine friendly.

Is There Such a Thing Called Aggressive Internet Marketing?

I was surfing the net looking for new marketing strategies and I came across the term – aggressive internet marketing. Upon further search, there were several articles written about aggressive internet marketing and couldn’t help notice that they seem to be regurgitated information about the same topic.

If you happen to see this line – “Internet marketing is the true aggressive marketing and promotions that exceed the expectations of any businessman or Aggressive internet marketing means full-blown marketing and promotions that exceed any businessman’s expectations”, I‘m just wondering if they’re really serious about what they’re talking about.

I have a suspicion they’re just targeting the term ‘aggressive internet marketing’ to have Google index it by increasing keyword density. There’s really nothing there that most bloggers or site owners don’t know about.

So to add more crap on aggressive internet marketing, I’ll add more to it here…hehe;-)

You can only do aggressive internet marketing if:

You know what you’re doing or you just happen to hit the jackpot – i.e. you’re in a high demand and low competition niche and everyone is buying whatever it is you’re selling like crazy.

You know what internet marketing strategy to use such as article marketing, email marketing, leverage marketing, viral marketing, PPC, etc.

You know a lot or something about SEO.

If you have a blog, surely you must have decent original content not just scrapped articles from other sites and a gazillion opt-in subscribers.

If you’re selling something, you know how to drive traffic to your landing page.

Google finds you’re site interesting, a lot of backlinks, so you’re up there in Google’s serps and gives your blog/site a PR10 or maybe your next door neighbor is Matt Cutts and he gives you a tip or two that no one else knows giving you a slight edge over everyone else.

You have acquired ‘guru’ status without really trying.

You have a pleasing personality and everyone follows you like a pied piper on twitter or in any social networking site you’re in.

You’re trading banters with the top kahunas in your niche like say – John Chow, ProBlogger(Darren Rowse), Shoemoney, BoingBoing, Carlocab(the kidblogger – you’ve heard of him, or haven’t you, seriously?).

There certainly are a lot more. But if you’re a newbie like me still testing several of the internet marketing strategies mentioned above, doing aggressive internet marketing just for the sake of being aggressive on internet marketing will still land you nowhere if you don’t have at least any of the basic foundations well laid out and working for you.

We’re finally at the last part of know your PPC search engine internet marketing campaign. Here we’ll discuss some of the vital ingredients of your landing page in detail.

Your landing page will consist of the following:

* Heading
* Opening section
* Body copy

-selling point 1
-selling point 2

* Personal guarantee
* Call to action
* Your p.s.

Heading
- Your heading should attract attention and must have a “hook” to compel the reader to keep on reading. I’m really no copywriter so I think it’s wise to consult one who is knowledgeable in this area.

Opening Section
- In the opening section, point out the problem and state your solution

Body Copy
- The landing page body should list all the benefits starting from the most important down to the least

Personal Guarantee
- This part of your landing page eases the mind of the buyer because you intend to give them their money’s worth. Make it clear, long term, deliver it with no questions asked and provide visible contact information

Call to Action
This is the most important part of your landing page. If you have properly presented your benefits above, your visitor will most likely make a purchase. Always include here your main benefit and urgency factor. Tell the visitor what to do next and how he/she will get the product.

Your P.S.
You might be surprised that this portion is one of the most read part of the landing page. You can have one or two p.s. at the most. Just state here your call to action with a little twist.

Thank You Page
If your visitor purchased your product or service, redirect him/her to your thank you page. This page is where you thank your visitor for the purchase and reassure that he/she made a great choice.

There are more things you have to take care of like page automation, payment processor, autoresponder and the redirect to your thank you and download page, etc. This is beyond the scope of know your PPC search engine internet marketing campaign topic. I might post a few articles re the subject in the future but I think this will suffice for now.

To summarize, knowing the basic points in your PPC search engine internet marketing campaign such as:

keyword or keyword phrase

budget for cost per click

ad copy

relevance

landing page

This would greatly increase your chances of successfully implementing your next PPC search engine internet marketing ad campaign.

One final note:
After doing keyword research, you most likely will have several versions of your keyword phrases. To make your PPC search engine internet marketing campaign more interesting, try to “split test” your ads using different keyword phrases while using the same title.

If you have more funds try multi-split testing using two or more titles. The only thing to do here is to constantly monitor your ads. Keep the one that gives the highest conversion rate and drop those that do not perform well.

For those who want to download Windows 7 must have an active subscription account to login to access the download and generate the beta keys for Windows 7.

It’s still in beta but as always, Microsoft hypes this latest Windows 7 release as - “Windows 7 is faster, more reliable, and makes it easier to do what you want”.

Well, they also said that when they released Vista. But after consumers upgraded, all sorts of problems came up. Vista gobbled up memory; it had conflicts with other apps, etc. Some had no other option but to downgrade back to Windows XP.

With this latest Windows 7 beta release, will Microsoft live up to the hype? Only time will tell. Oh btw, here’s some bad news, if you plan to upgrade from XP to Windows 7, that’s not going to happen because Windows 7 allows upgrades only from Vista with service pack 1. There’s still no decision if they’ll include an upgrade from XP to Windows 7 when they release it in market. But for now, you can test drive Windows 7 beta version up to August this year for free.

Here are some of Windows 7 features.

In part 1, we finished discussing keywords, keyword phrase and budget. Here in part 2, we’ll move on to the remaining three items in your PPC search engine internet marketing campaign and they are – ad copy, relevance and your landing page.

Ad Copy
The following is Google AdWords text format, you get a total of 4 lines of text with their minimum number of characters.

1. Title - 25 characters maximum
2. First Text Line - 35 characters maximum
3. Second Text Line - 35 characters maximum
4. Display URL 35 characters maximum

Title
Try as much as possible to include your main “keyword” or “keyword phrase” here and if possible in bold letters. Your goal is to attract the viewer’s attention and get him/her to read the rest of the ad.

First Text Line
Use this line to show your most powerful benefit and make it appealing at the emotional level. If for example it’s facial cream to make younger looking skin for women you are selling, you can state here that using the cream would greatly enhance her youthful appearance making her very attractive to men.

Second Text Line
In this second line, present another benefit plus an appeal to the viewer’s logical side. Again from the previous example, aside from looking beautiful and her skin looking flawless, her confidence would be greatly enhanced giving her a logical reason to purchase the product.

Tips: If possible, try to include supporting keywords in the first or second text line of the ad while appealing to the emotional and logical facet of the viewer.

Make it a point to give relevance to your keyword in the title, line text as well as in the copy of your landing page. Relevance is basically another way Google uses a complex calculation which takes into the account the popularity of the ad in their algorithm. The more clicks an ad receives, the more Google rewards the ad and pushes your PPC search engine internet marketing campaign up the top position.

Since Google assigns a “quality score” to your PPC search engine internet marketing campaign, having relevance in the keywords used would greatly lower the cost per click and most likely land your ad in a higher position. It’s like doing a mini SEO to your ads and in effect reaping the benefits of lowering your cost per click and pushing you ad at the top spot.

Landing page
Your landing page is where you can actually close the sale from the ads you made on Google AdWords. This is where you want to direct traffic. Information here should be concise and direct to the point. The main purpose of your landing page is either to make a sale or for your visitors to opt-in or both.

Adding a “squeeze page” is where you want your visitor to subscribe and opt-in for your newsletter, e-zine, free offer, e-course etc. This may be a pop-up or a small box where visitors can place their name and e-mail add to subscribe.

This ends part 2 of Know your PPC search engine internet marketing campaign. We’ll discuss the format of your landing page and its vital contents in part 3. Stay tuned.
