Through the six weeks leading up to Easter, we'll be exploring six "marks" of our lives as disciples of Jesus. Based on the "Power Surge" series by Michael Foss, these marks are guideposts for our lives, and our life together as a congregation within the Body of Christ.

Each week, Ed or Erin (whoever is presiding) will facilitate our worship time using one of the marks as a theme. Following the service, resource sheets are available for us to use in our prayers and reflections through the following week. Many (most?) of us are gathering in small groups at some point during the week to share our stories and sense of where these marks are leading us as Christians. (For information on group times/places, please contact the church office.)

To help make things easier (or to replace lost copies :), we are posting the take-home resources below.

May God bless us as we use our Lenten time to open ourselves to God's presence and love in Christ!

Peter Privett wrote the book as
a spiritual exploration of concervation and citizenship using the methods of
Godly Play. We've adapted it to fit the time we have to spend with the
children, and to focus on the issues relevant to living in Victoria, British
Columbia.

On the first Sunday of Lent, the story is similar to the creation story from
Genesis. Through the story, we will create an 'Earth' that will be used in
other stories throughout Lent. Then the children will go down to the kitchen,
and paper mache to make their own Earth.

On December 9th the Council for Pilgrim United Church heard an official report from our Land Use Task Force (formed at the Annual Meeting on Feb. 17, 2008). In this report, the Task Force offered their vision of how we are being called by Christ to use the property we have inherited to its best potential. As Christians we are called to offer all we are and all we have towards God's dream for Creation (including humanity). In this time we are being asked to consider what is the best way for us to use this particular resource in Christ's name.

At its December meeting Council endorsed theTask Force's vision. Now the conversation widens to include the whole of the congregation. There will be opportunities to discuss this more formally, but please feel free to talk to members of Council or the Task Force at any point.

You will find below the report and recommendation which Council has approved.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Land Use Opportunity

Report from the Land Use Task Force (LUTF) December, 2008.

Goal: To provide affordable housing - meaning safe, clean, decent housing for low income people with an emphasis on single parent families.

Contacts to date:
Jon Munn - City of Colwood Planner
Doug Goodwin - Executive Secretary of BC Conference
Henry Kamphof - CRD Housing Secretariat
Peggy Wilmot - Faith in Action
Jim Bennett - CRD Housing Action team, for the Real Estate Board

Land: [Edited - EdC :)] This vision includes both the Painter Road property, and the lot and house beside it on Metchosin Road.

Potential Scope: The Land Use Task Force has outlined three approaches and, having presented this report to council, would now like the congregation's approval in order to move ahead with a feasibility study to be financed by CMHC.

Direction as to what development might be pursued will be determined at an appropriately called congregational meeting once the feasibility study is completed.

The development options currently being considered are: (1) to develop 6 to 10 units on the side property; (2) to include a portion of the Painter Road property, and thus obtain 12 or more units; and (3) to develop the total property which would require extensive zoning changes but would provide many more units including a new church facility to be shared, similar to the McClure United Church and Residence in Winnipeg. A feasibility study might present other options as well.

Moving Ahead: The LUTF would like to obtain agreement in principle from the Congregation to proceed.

- Funding for a feasibility study is being pursued through CMHC, the results of which should be known shortly.
- Consultation with Doug Goodwin, Executive Secretary of BC Conference, regarding the inclusion of both properties in this proposal is in process.
- LUTF would like to have informed and informal discussions with members of the congregation in the weeks preceding the 2009 Annual General Meeting [which takes place on Feb. 8 after worship -- Ed] with the expectation of a motion being put forward at the AGM for the task force to carry on until the feasibility study is completed.

The members of the Land Use Task Force are: Elaine Hooper (chair); David Stocks; Bob French; Arnold McCutcheon; Pat Ridgers; Ross Walker. Please feel free to contact any members, and to ask any questions that you may have.

[Contact phone #'s are posted on the bulletin board in the upstairs hallway at the Painter Road building. -- Ed]

It is understood that any new development would require appropriate funding assured through provincial or federal funding sources.

OK. OK. So it's actually you we are hoping will show up. But this headline looked better to me. And I am in fact hoping that you'll bring your bathrobe along. Or if you have something at home that works better, that'd be great too. But you're the important part.

On Dec. 21, the last Sunday before Christmas, we are going to be telling our story in drama. As we get ready for Christmas Eve, we are going to reach back into Luke's story of Jesus' birth, and then work our way forward. A faithful cast of willing volunteers will be taking on particular characters as the story unfolds. But we're hoping that all of us will feel a part of the drama. And there are moments (like crowd scenes) when the opportunity will be there to stand up, and enter the story physically.... or not. :)

So bring your bathrobe, or that smock in the basement closet! Wear a shawl, or loot the kitchen drawer for its towels! Put on the sheep costume, or dig up that false beard! But whatever you do, just show up!

Peace!

Text for 21 Dec: Luke 1:1-2:7

*** 23 Dec.: We did it! Thanks to all of you who came out amid the snowflakes...and drifts! It was informal, spontaneous, and Spirit-filled! Thanks be to God!

OK. It's another short (and sweet?) musing.

Near the end of last month a number of us gathered at the Painter Road building to reflect on the book Christianity for the Rest of Us. In the conversation that evening I offered my appreciation for the author's comment that the thriving "mainline" churches she worked with had three main points of common ground: an authentic expression of Christianity; a way of articulating that faith in words; and a process for teaching people a way of living out Jesus' Way.

I think that, in The United Church, we have struggled with all three of these. But I also believe that we really, REALLY need to work towards them.

So here's an entry point: I'd invite you to take a look at Michael Kooiman's blog The Question on the UCC's Emerging Spirit website. What is your response? What do you think our congregation's response would be as a community? What feelings does The Question evoke in you?

Have a wonderful Advent!
Peace!

Christianity for the Rest of Us
Diana Butler Bass

On Monday, November 24 there will be a gathering of people who are interested in discussing the way forward for Pilgrim using the book Christianity for the Rest of Us as a basis for the discussion. We will meet in the Godly Play room at 7:00pm and Ed will act as facilitator. If you have read the book please consider joining us. However, the meeting will be open to anyone whether you have read the book or not. The church library has several copies and so does the public library.

We are looking forward to good discussion and fellowship.
