Julian said “It was a great event and the club are honoured to present £565.44 to Pilgrims Hospices. We are always keen to help local good causes.”

More than 90 people enjoyed a sumptuous table d’hote lunch with £7 from every booking being given to the east Kent charity.

The sell out event was organised by local Pilgrims supporter and Rotarian Michael Eaton with restauranteur Paul Hagger who also donated a prize of a stay for two at the establishment to the event’s raffle.

Pilgrims Hospices Chief Executive Steve Auty said: “We’re very grateful to Paul’s Restaurant for hosting the lunch and we hope it will be the first of many. It was a great occasion for those who appreciate fine dining while raising money for charity at the same time.”

This week is Dying Matters Awareness Week, a positive national campaign raising awareness of dying, death and bereavement.

Pilgrims Hospices team is visiting local hospitals to allow the public and health professionals to find out more about the services it offers free of charge to patients, families and carers across east Kent.

Leading the workshops is Suzz Keith, Pilgrims education and training manager, she said: “People tend not to talk about death and dying. Those with life-limiting illness and their families can experience a great sense of isolation as a result.

“At Pilgrims Hospices we hope to empower patients to express their wishes and help them plan so they can get the most out of life. If you are a patient, supporting someone or simply interested in our work then come along to talk to us.”

The emphasis is on fun and enjoyment for the whole family in beautiful surroundings.

The day will begin at 9 am with a bacon sandwich followed by fishing, fun and a BBQ lunch. The raffle will be drawn and prizes given late afternoon.

There will be experts on hand to help with the fishing and we encourage children to some along and learn about fishing. We will also have a bouncy castle and face painting for children to enjoy.

The cost is £200 per swim with a total of 30 swims being available. All the equipment will be supplied that you will need and the allocations of the “swims” will be drawn out of a hat and changed at lunchtime.

This proved to be a very popular event so book your “swim” now.

This fabulous garden renowned for its Rhododendrons and Azaleas was once again a riot of colour and fragrance. A late spring meant the magnolias were in full bloom and woodland plants were still in full flower. Despite a bad weather forecast for the afternoon, there was no rain until the moment the gates closed.

Visitors came from far and wide, with perhaps the furthest ever being Sam Molars and Michele Duffy. They explained, “We are members of the Royal Horticultural Society and saw the garden being advertised for one day only in a magazine that came from them. We decided to rearrange our holiday plans and fly to England a few days earlier so that we could visit this wonderful garden. So we left Hobart, Tasmania, Australia on Tuesday and stopped off in London so that we could spend the day here.

“The garden was absolutely beautiful and worth altering our plans for. It is wonderful too that the money goes to such a good cause.”

Prunella Scarlett, Mrs Hardy’s niece, said, “It was wonderful to work with both Pilgrims Hospices and Operation Sunshine once again. The gardens have been lovingly restored over the last five years and it is a delight to be able to open them for the public.”

Deirdre Mewse, fundraising assistant, “Pilgrims would like to say a huge thank you to all the Hardy family for the work that went into making the day so fabulous. Everyone spoke of their joy at seeing such a beautiful garden.

“Pilgrims Hospices depend on the local community for 75% of its funding, and it is wonderful to see so many members of the community support events such as these.”
