In the afternoon we will have a variety of activities for children including face painting etc.

There will also be a cake sale

From 5pm – 7pm there Samba Pelo Mar, Whitstable’s fabulous Community Samba Band will be performing.

We will also be holding a raffle

Come and join us for a day of fun, excitement and thrills.

It’s that time of year again to break open the toolbox and build your gravity powered vehicle. Build yourself a whacky crowd pleaser, or create something that will challenge the course record.

It’s not all about the racing, it is a fantastic day out for all the family with plenty to see and do at our fete.

The main purpose of the event is to raise funds for our chosen beneficiaries, The Pilgrims Hospice Ashford and Aldington Village Hall

Prizes will be awarded for:

• The most eccentric and ingenious

• The best novelty soapbox

• The best turned out soapbox

• The most sponsorship raised

• Fastest time – solo entry

• Team event – fastest combined time 2 runs/2 drivers

• The driver bravery award

• The Deeded memorial trophy

Drivers must be over 16 on 20th August 2013. Drivers U18 must have written consent from a parent or guardian.

A minimum of £30 sponsorship per entry is required.

A prize of a £50 voucher for the Walnut Tree Pub will be awarded for the highest sponsorship raised. Sponsorship must be submitted for the day to enter this.

Organiser Mark Wilson said: “Each year we have run this event, more and more tractors take part, growing from only 40 tractors in the first year to 118 today. People from all over east Kent come to take part to raise funds for a charity dear to our families’ hearts.”

Sharon Burberry, Pilgrims fundraising assistant said: “It was a great day out. I was blown away by the sight of all these tractors and trailers driving through Smarden, Egerton and Headcorn. It was a sight to behold and an event for all the family.

“75% of our funding comes from the local community and it is wonderful when the community comes out like this to have fun while raising money for us.”

Led by Kay Gray and Jodi Powell, the group will be striding out from Eastbourne back to their favourite watering hole, the Captain Howey pub in aid of Pilgrims Hospices on Saturday 25 May, finishing the following day.

Kay Gray, checkout supervisor explained: “We wanted to do something special for Pilgrims and what started as a small venture with just Jodi Powell, another member of staff, myself and our husbands walking, soon became a major staff event.

“The local MMA gym Madhatters and the Captain Howey all got behind the staff and have been raising money on our behalf.

Pam Meller, Pilgrims fundraising assistant, said: “Kay and the team at Sainsbury’s New Romney have been really enthusiastic in supporting us as its charity of the year. It has been great working with them and we hope they have a fabulous time and their feet don’t hurt too much afterwards.

“The money raised will enable Pilgrims to continue to offer care to all in need of our services in the east Kent.”

Diners enjoyed the freshly prepared teas with delicious scones, clotted cream and strawberry jam in the delightful surroundings of the hotel, which sits in 100 acres of parkland golf course in the heart of the Kentish weald. London Beach Hotel donated the money for each tea to Pilgrims handing over an amazing £1,100.

The afternoon also included a talk by the inspirational force behind the hospice movement in east Kent, Pilgrims founder and president Ann Robertson OBE.

Ann gave a fascinating insight into the history of Pilgrims and also talked about the new directions the charity is taking within its three hospices and out in the community.

Carol Stevens, chair of the Tenterden fundraising group, said, “It was a hugely successful afternoon. To hear Ann speak was a real privilege and encouraged us to do more for this important charity

“We would like to thank London Beach Country Hotel for its ongoing commitment to Pilgrims and the work it does. Pilgrims Hospices need to raise over £10.5 million per year to provide services free of charge for patients and families, so the support of the local community is vital.”

The group meets at Thanet Pub of the Year, The Montiefore Arms in Ramsgate. Here, Club Chairman Julian Dungey, presented a cheque to Kay Smith, from Pilgrims Fundraising Team.

Julian said “It was a great event and the club are honoured to present £565.44 to Pilgrims Hospices. We are always keen to help local good causes.”

More than 90 people enjoyed a sumptuous table d’hote lunch with £7 from every booking being given to the east Kent charity.

The sell out event was organised by local Pilgrims supporter and Rotarian Michael Eaton with restauranteur Paul Hagger who also donated a prize of a stay for two at the establishment to the event’s raffle.

Pilgrims Hospices Chief Executive Steve Auty said: “We’re very grateful to Paul’s Restaurant for hosting the lunch and we hope it will be the first of many. It was a great occasion for those who appreciate fine dining while raising money for charity at the same time.”
