Picking a case for your computer can be a hassle. In some cases you make a decision and months or years later it turns out some feature or dimension is inadequate and you need something else. In this list I will outline some of the best cases in the full tower range that offer more modern features and are certain to be future proof. Why full tower cases? Because the larger size means you will not be short on space in the future. To compensate for this however, many of the cases in this list will be on the lighter side. The case itself will be at least under 30lbs (13.61 kg). Targeted price range is typically below $160 with the ability to find the case on sale for a significant bit less than this.

Some criteria for this list would be good airflow, removable drive cages and fan filters.

I am typically not an apple fan. In fact, I could be considered someone who dislikes apple. This new iPad that Apple has recently been talking about is one attractive beast though. It's probably the best tablet out right now by a decent margin, not necessarily by hardware, but due to the combination of hardware and software. The one problem, which really is a problem for all comparable tablets, is the price. At a minimum of $500, it's not a choice to be made lightly. The specifications of this new device are below in a comparison image, courtesy of PCWORLD.

The significant changes over the previous ipad 2, which is now going for as low as $399, are the new processor and graphics processor along with a new higher resolution display. We have an A5X processor which is a dual core processor and a quad core graphics processor. The new resolution is 2048 by 1536 pixels with 264 pixels per inch. It is definitely an attractive option if you are willing to buy a device in this price range. Apple currently has the most games on their iOS devices so those interested in some mobile gaming on their iPad have a clear choice. They also have some unique app choices not present on the android app store. I can imagine a lot of people who own an iPad 2 will not care for this device, or will hold it in contempt for making their device less than what it was when they bought it so recently. Such is technology however.

That is all well and good, but for those not willing to spend the funds on a glorified e-Book reader (bitter?), I have some options. These exclude a whole range of cheap tablets that are considered knockoffs of the iPad, from China. Only known manufacturers are included.

Kindle Fire

A device released by amazon as the latest update to their kindle line. This device comes with 8GB of storage, WiFi, dual-core processor and a screen with a higher ppi (pixels per inch) than the iPad 2's screen. Unfortunately, the storage is not directly upgradeable with micrSD cards and you would have to either use the Wi-Drive from Kingston, other similar options or use Amazon's own cloud storage option to satisfy your expanded storage needs. Lenovo IdeaPad A1

Lenovo has a series of tablets that go by the name "IdeaPad". The A1 version seems to be the cheapest and, based on the specifications of the device, it is worth taking note of. The typical price is around the same as the Kindle Fire. The one spefication I could find in which the Kindle fire clearly wins was in terms of processor capabilities. The Lenovo IdeaPad A1 only has a single core processor while the Kindle fire sports a dual-core processor. In most other details, it comes out at the top.

Acer Iconia TAB A100

This is not as cheap as the Kindle Fire and IdeaPad A1, but at ~$280 it is worth a mention. It can be found for as low as $250 on Amazon. The specifications of this device beat the previously mention above and I would select this with ease.

Le Pan TC 970

Barnes and Noble Nook Tablet (16g)

I wasn't too impressed when I first heard about this device based on the looks alone, but the specifications are impressive. It has everything the Kindle has, but includes more storage which is further expandable by using a MicroSD card (up to 32GB). It also has more RAM. The device comes in at roughly $240. If it ever gets to $199 it would be the clear choice up against the Kindle and even the other devices in this article. This is my choice. Note that the 16gb and 8gb versions of this device seem to include different hardware. The RAM, I have noticed, is only 512MB in the 8GB version and 1GB in the 16gb version (according to Barnes and Noble website.)

Mass Effect 3: What Changes With ME2 Save File Transfers

The importance of choice is secondary to the importance of consequences. In Mass Effect 3, Bioware wants to give your decisions weight, and to pull that unique feat off, they’ve included the Character Transfer system into Mass Effect 3. Long ago, Mass Effect 2 allowed Character Transfers from Mass Effect 1, but this is a whole different beast. Instead of hundreds of variable, Mass Effect 3 features thousands of changes depending on your actions in Mass Effect 2. Not only that, you’ll find a slew of benefits and bonuses if Shepard continues his journey directly from the previous Mass Effect space adventure. There are far too many changes to list, and many more left to be discovered, but we’ve compiled a list of known factors that will change depending on your choices after a Character Transfer. Give Mass Effect 2 another play and prepare for another perfect run as Commander Shepard.

Mass Effect 3 Sound Fix

UPDATE: Sound problems may come back with the options below. Another fix that might be more permanent is to run the game as an Administrator. Right click the shortcut or exe file and select "Run as Administrator." You may also right click one of these, select properties and go to compatibility tab. There, select always run as administrator.

Some users have been reporting sound problems with Mass Effect 3 since the demo release. Some also with the full game (to be officially released on the 6th of march). Some options to fix this problem follow:

1. Set your system sound to at least 24bit 44100KHz (Studio Quality). This solved the problem for me. To do this under Windows 7, follow the pictures.

i. Right Click the icon shown as 1
ii. Click on 2 in the picture below

iii. Double-click the device that you use for your Audio, in my case it was the Sigma Headphones.

iv. Change quality to minimum 24bit 44100KHz (Studio Quality)

2. The second option is to go into your Mass effect Config app and chance the audio setting to On, from "default"

This app will be in your binaries folder, right beside the Bin32 folder in the Mass Effect 3 installation folder. Go to the audio section and change the setting there. You application may be named MassEffect3Config.exe or contain the word demo in it, if you are somehow running the demo.

3. Option 3 is a simple restart of the Game.

4. Check system Audio level to ensure it is not on mute, then check Mass Effect 3 Audio levels in game to ensure they are turned up to an audible level.

Kindle Fire Storage Expansion

The Kindle Fire is, in some ways, an excellent piece of hardware. Relatively cheap with a brilliant screen, wifi and a decent version of the android OS. Below you can find detailed specifications for the Amazon Kindle Fire:

Take a good look at those specifications. Notice something? Capitalism rears its ugly head. Amazon only included 8GB of storage with the device. In terms of books, and maybe even music, that is decent. Unfortunately this device has the capability for much more than just those functions. For those looking to watch movies and TV shows, you would have to take amazon up on their offer of Cloud storage and streaming. So they hope at least. There are options that would allow you to bypass Amazon and the need for internet access to use more storage.

These options detailed after the break

1. Wi-Drive (from Kingston)

This is an external, ultra-portable harddrive (HDD) that includes wifi capabilities. Once you install an app off the appstore, it allows you to run that app and connect with the Harddrives wireless network. Using it as extra storage for the Kindle (and apple products - apple is famous for excluding expandable storage). Unfortunately the drive comes with battery life of its own to worry about and might not be as fast as a MicroSD card might be for some. Still, it is worth a look. The device comes in at under $50 for the 16GB version and around $80 for the 32GB version. Hard Drives are a bit expensive right now which might explain some of the cost.

2. SplashTop Remote Desktop

This is somewhat a more fancy option compared to the 3rd one in this list. This app allows you to control your laptop/desktop from your Kindle Fire. By doing so, you can stream videos from the PC to the kindle and use other files on the PC from your kindle.

3. Wireless networking

This process is the same as used to share files between PCs on a network. Simply download a file Explorer App for the kindle which has network access capabilities. I recommend "File Expert" (Free). Run it and under the Network section you will find another link to Windows/Mac sharing. There you can do a search for PCs sharing content and access them. Make sure you have shared the needed folders on your PC/Laptop

I got a T-mobile Vibrant a few months ago. That is Samsung's Galaxy S smartphone. I can tell you that I did not stay with the stock ROM for long. At first I had no way to access the phone through a computer as I hadn't received the USB cable connection. As soon as I bought a new one, I was on the hunt for the right ROM. At first I updated to Samsung's other official ROM, which was the new FROYO 2.2. The phone had come with Android OS 2.1. Not being satisfied, and looking for as much awesome as possible, I went over to xda-developers.com They have a section specifically for the Samsung Vibrant, here. Over in the Android Development section you will find ROMS, Kernels etc for your perusal. Below is a recall of the ROMS I tested. I will cover how to install each in a future post.

First:

Bionix 1.3.1 found here

I originally found this ROM through XDA but it is easier to find on the ROMS official site. It was a decent experience, and I thought it would be the best ROM I could try, especially after my attempt at using the next ROM in this list. A review of the ROM is provided below along with pics and some features.

The battery life was excellent. I would get beyond a day with regular usage. Wifi with no 3g or 3g with no wifi, music playback, browsing etc. The interface was responsive and the added features were welcome. I used it with the Overstock kernel here.

Second:

The newly released CyanogenMod 7 for the Samsung Vibrant , found here.

Unfortunately this ROM is no longer supported. The official statement from the team is as follows

We are no longer supporting the Vibrant due to the inability to dial 911. We consider the issues related to this unresolvable without source code from Samsung related to the Radio interface layer and its interactions with the Audio layers and have taken the decision to no longer support this. We apologize for the inconvenience and strongly suggest that Vibrant users use a Samsung ROM due to the 911 issues with any ROMs based on open source code.

The ROM was attractive and responsive. Possibly the smoothest of the ROMS and it had some decent features. The really bad thing about it and the reason I had to get rid of it, was the battery life. It was horrible compared to the other 2 ROMs. I got 6-11 hours while using it about the same as the rest. A review follows.

It was and is a very nice ROM.

Finally:

MIUI

There are a lot of MIUI based ROMs floating around. I settled with MIUI Prime 360 Vr 3.1 FFC. I believe I had installed another one prior to this and did not have that great an experience with it. I cannot recall which it was at this time. I installed this after returning to Bionix for a while. The MIUI I had before gave me battery life about as poor as the CM7 MOD did so I went back to what I knew would give me great battery. I decided to give MIUI another go but with a different, more standard version. I was not disappointed. You can check it out in the video below

I get roughly the same battery life as the Bionix ROM but with something of a better feeling interface. One thing I liked about the CM MOD was that it would let you mount storage to the computer without the hassle that came with the stock rom and Bionix. There is a simple toggle that comes up when the cable is connected and that lets you manage that function. MIUI also has this feature. For me, this has been the best ROM though I am always keeping an eye out. Looking forward to what the community can produce in terms of ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) Ports/MODS. It is very unlikely that Samsung will provide an official ICS version for Galaxy S users.

Gaming Advice: Video Card securing

Thought I would share something from my experience with gaming. I have a shaky computer and home electrical wiring. I had problems with power supplies in the past, and I finally moved on to Corsair for their supposed reliability. Everything was going great, till I started getting low framerates in games. The PSU was also producing a whining sound (can be normal), so I thought it was on its way out and therefore reducing my GPU performance. I actually got out and bought a new power supply (corsairs second version of their TX650) but to my dismay, the situation did not improve. I did find a solution though, one that should have occurred to me sooner.

I had actually had problems with my GPU before. It would change to using x4 PCI-e speeds instead of staying at x16. This would cause reduced framerates and was due to the GPU not being seated properly. Remember, PCI-e lanes are all the same. x1 is just using fewer lanes than x4 etc. x16 uses all the lanes and if a few are not connected, it will continue working, but using a slower spec. This time though, I did not see anything but x16 as the speed. I checked this using GPU-Z. I thought everything was fine with the GPU, but it turned out to be the source of all my troubles.

The GPU not being seated properly was causing these symptoms

1. 2-3 power cycles before the system would boot

2. GPU noise higher than normal

3. Lower than normal Framerates in a game I was familiar with. i.e. I knew what kind of performance was normal for me. The game was League of Legends

I moved it around a bit and finally found a position in which the PC boots right away and games have the proper frame rates. I suspect that this problem might have caused the demise of my hd3870, but I am not sure. It is likely to eventually damage something in the system however, so take note and be careful. I have to say, even with the quirks of the motherboard, its been around for quite a while. Foxconn P35a.

Windows won't let you delete that file?

Have you ever come up on a file that just would not be deleted? I have, several times. It can be frustrating. Here I will detail ways in which I dealt with the issue on separate occasions.

1. Simplest method is to download applications that address the issue specifically.

Unlocker is one such application.

LockHunter is another.

2. Kill the suspected application using Task Manager. To get to the tast manager, simply press and hold CTRL+ALT+DELETE on your keyboard. This will bring up a screen with the option to start the Task Manager. If you suspect that Windows Explorer is the culprit, kill the explorer.exe task and restart it by going to File, New task and typing explorer, in the task manager.

3. Restart the Operating system in Safe mode. Often this is done by pressing F8 while the system boots and selecting "safe mode"

4. This one I had to do recently. I could not figure what was holding the file from being deleted or renamed. I had to boot into the other operating system I had on the computer. You can do this if you dual boot, or it can be done via a boot CD such as Hiren's BootCD. Simply boot into DOS or any of the provided file management tools on the CD.

Those not willing to pay the, widely accepted to be exorbitant, costs for a retail PS3 jailbreak package are in luck as member of the scene have managed to reverse the original Jailbreak and release an alternative which can be used on various devices. Besides the chips mentioned, the jailbreak is currently being ported over to the n900 from nokia, android phones and more.

Sony Halts Australian ReSeller PS JailBreak Sales

This is a major move on Sony's part to hamper the spread of the recently revealed PSJailBreak PlayStation 3 hack. This is a temporary move which lasts till the end of august 2010 at which point it will be determined whether or not Sony has the right to request the courts in Australia fully shutdown reseller sales of this product.

Resellers that have been mentioned are Qualtronics and Ozmodchips among some possible others.

Ozmodchips provided this response:

"28/08/2010 - Hello Everyone. On Friday the 27/08/2010 we where given some documents from the Lawyers representing Sony. The documents are Federal Court orders for a temporary injunction.

The Injunction states that from 24 hours of receiving the documents to the 31st of August OzModChips, Quantronics, Modsupplier and anyone else in Australia:

• Give up all stock in our possession, including our sample

I guess it was lucky that the device was delayed by a couple of days. While many people that have received their sample and sent it off to cloners....we sent ours to a well known homebrew developer.

It already sets a dangerous precedent. Everyone that was using OtherOS, everyone that has had a faulty PS3 laser... and those interested in PS3 custom firmware and homebrew applications. We cannot do it alone, we need the support of everyone the homebrew community, the media, engineers that understand the inner workings and anyone else that can provide support.

Regarding orders:

If the injunction becomes permanent we will refund everyone that has ordered from us. If it doesn't then we will send all orders as originally planned. There will be no delay to the planned shipping date. We would ask everyone to wait until then.

New PS3 hack detectable by Sony

It is almost certain that, with the current exploit, you will be detected and your console banned from PSN. The first report I have seen says the ban was a 30 day ban so you might not be permanently banned, but caution should still be taken. I would advice using the hack offline only.

A bit of information from devs in the ps3 scene

RichDevX has tweeted (http://twitter.com/RichDevX/status/21834071821, http://twitter.com/RichDevX/status/21853453805, and http://twitter.com/RichDevX/status/21834160613) the following: "Using the backup manager on PSN is like walking into a trap. Title: Backup Manager || Title ID: LAUN12345. FYI, dongle IDs can be revoked! Don't be surprised if error 0x8002A227 is returned."

The below is from SKFU. This guy isn't on top of my "to be respected" list, but he has knowledge.

SONY may update the PS3's bootcode to prevent loading the stick. They also could log the "backup manager"'s game ID (LAUN-12345) when people go online. So they could identify who actually uses the illegal JIG clone and ban the affected consoles. This would be an illegal step aswell, but hey; it's SONY.

As was expected, the original PSJailbreak that surfaced recently has been cloned. The jury is still out on whether or not it is possible to carry out the same function at no cost to the user however.

Yesterday we reported news that the official PS JailBreak site warned of clone PS3 modchips, and today it appears the first PSJailBreak clone has surfaced dubbed x3JailBreak.

While there aren't many details on the official www.x3JailBreak.com site yet, below is a rough translation from French site Logic-Sunrise (linked above) on these new PS JailBreak PlayStation 3 modchip clones.

To quote: "That is now three days since the announcement of the hack the PS3 has been proven to create excitement on the Web. When everyone realized that the long awaited hack console Nippon boiled down to a dongle with a USB output (at a price a bit high), the question on everyone's lips was 'is there an alternative ?, clones... like the linker?'

The answer is do not wait and made positive, in fact already found on the Web advertisements for the first clones, it was still very little information on the selling price of these new jailbreak for PS3 or when they are available.

What is certain is that for the moment, no team has revealed the list of components necessary for its implementation so that the most talented in electronic solders and can make their dongle HomeMade."

Playstation 3 Backups and Homebrew now Possible!

Quite obviously the previously reported Geohot hack regarding the ps3 has failed to bare fruit. We now have what looks to be a genuinely effective way to run backups and user created applications on the PlayStation 3. It is quite simple to operate and doesn't require opening the console or fiddling with it in any significant way. The hack comes in the form of a USB dongle which plugs into a USB slot on the PS3 and allows you to backup disc based games to an internal or external HDD using their backup manager and run those games using the same application. It seems to work by turning retail consoles in debug units temporarily, thus allowing them to run/install applications that are not vetted by Sony. There are several vidoes demonstrating the device in action and the validity of the claims are being confirmed by many reputable sites in the console modding scene.

Geohot: PlayStation 3 (PS3) Hacked!

So after years of waiting and devs keeping everything a secret or nay saying every attempt or every development, Geohot with his hands-on approach has finally made some headway into the PS3. He claims to have hacked it with

read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor.

As far as the exploit goes, I'm not revealing it yet. The theory isn't really patchable, but they can make implementations much harder. Also, for obvious reasons I can't post dumps. I'm hoping to find the decryption keys and post them, but they may be embedded in hardware. Hopefully keys are setup like the iPhone's KBAG.

PTOM Reveals Gran Turismo 5 Night Racing and GT5 PS3 Box Art

Forum user Digital-Nitrate of GTPlanet.net (linked above) has posted a few scans from the latest PlayStation: The Official Magazine (PTOM) which reveals both Gran Turismo 5 Night Racing and GT5 PS3 box art.

Apparently the game will have over 1,000 vehicles including Indy cars. All of which has modeled interiors, external visual deformation and mechanical damage.

170 “premium” cars also feature internal deformation. The magazine also confirms that the racing tracks will be supporting weather effects and day/night cycles.

From the gameplay perspective, Gran Turismo 5 will be using the PlayStation Eye for head-tracking. Moreover, you can set up the game to be displayed on three screens for multi-display if you have three PlayStation 3 systems lying around. Finally, the game will have Youtube HD uploading and 16-players online support.

Gran Turismo 5 is slated for a summer release on the PlayStation 3.

Sony and Panasonic Propose Blu-ray Disc Capacity Increase

Sony and Panasonic have announced that they have developed a new optical disc evaluation technology that will allow the layer capacity of Blu-ray media to increase from 25GB to 33.4GB using existing Blu-ray laser diodes. This would presumably allow existing Blu-ray hardware - including Blu-ray Disc players and burners - to play the proposed discs with a simple firmware upgrade.

Currently, disc evaluation is accomplished by analyzing disc jitter, but at higher capacity, that technique becomes unreliable. Sony and Panasonic resolved this by developing i-MLSE (Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation) evaluation index, which can perform the same function as jitter but at higher capacities.

Computing MLSE is typically a very processor intensive process, but new advances in hardware development make this not only possible but also in real time (similar to jitter).

No word on when or if the Blu-ray Disc Association will evaluate the proposed layer capacity increase for inclusion in the Blu-ray spec, but with Sony and Panasonic two of the largest Blu-ray members, it will likely happen sometime later this year.

Today MysticHades has posted a video on YouTube of a MotorStorm PS3 hack that has once again surfaced (it originally hit http://www.elotrolado.net/hilo_ps3-carga-backups-lo-que-se-nos-ocultan_1325496 and PS3News.com this past November), demonstrating an exploit used to run PS3 backups.
