"Buy one get one (or many?) free", but about that just a bit later - first some initial thoughts and a quick update. So now I have an iPhone 3G , now what? - well.... I'm SOOOOOO loving it ;) It's hands down the best mobile gear purchase since my eeePC 3G ! iPhone really gives good web browsing in small form factor.

I did not want to do yet another unboxing since there are so many of those out there.

I have now played with it for two full days continuously, so I have not had time to post anything (yeah excuses I know). No really I have been using it ALL the time.

This is the iPhone 3G launch Finnish style. I'm here live at the Helsinki, Lasipalatsi square. This event setup is done by Sonera, the Finnish Mobile operator (owned by TeliaSonera). The event is called Deaf Jam and it goes like this.

First off there is a setup build with stage and video screens on the both side playing iPhone videos. On stage there are DJ's doing their thing. However the audio is coming only via radio or via headphones that can be borrowed free from Sonera. Why is that - I don't know - perhaps that part of their theme of iPhone, the media player, or something. I don't think it's really a good idea, have to wear headphones in a public event?

Oh well.

As it's now pas midnight in New Zealand, engadget has already got one . I still have 7 and a half hour to go, if I can get one from the Sonera event . If not I still have to try and sleep one more night. Sucks...

Meanwhile, also the apps store is open, so check out what's available there. I cant see the application that I'm looking for - the mobile hot spot ie. mobile router 3g to Wifi... But I can already see like this one, Google contact sync

I have been waiting to get comments in my posts from you guys, but so far I have not received any. I was thinking that it just takes some time until some of you start commenting and since until recently, I have not been very active with my blog for a while, so I had not paid too much attention to missing comments either.

But not getting even spam comments got me thinking that perhaps there is something wrong with my comments component? So I tested some commenting myself and sure enough I got an error.

It seems that at some point in the very beginning, some setting had gone bad, so my comments had never worked - I'm very sorry for all of you

iPhone 3G eXtndr concept

I must be getting pretty anxious, while waiting for my iPhone...

After I had made the decision to buy iPhone 3G, I have been thinking of ways that I may want to enhance it. I'm thinking of potential applications and accessories that would make nearly perfect mobile device even better.

It's kinda hard to think what I would be missing or needing, since I don't have experience even from the previous iPhone. The closest thing to an iPhone I have, is my iPod Touch.

On the software side I only have one thing I will be looking from the apps store after it's launch, and that is Wifi router software to turn my iPhone into a personal mobile

As I continue to wait for my iPhone 3G , I have been following up on how things are developing on other parts of the world. In New York people have already started to line up week early , now that's crazy!

Because of the time zones, the first iPhones will be sold in New Zealand and perhaps the very first one will be bought by this guy ?

I'm kinda lucky since Finland is on the first time zone for Europe, so we will have the upper hand when it comes to European markets.

When the new iPhone 3G was announced with details of July 11th availability in Finland, I have been waiting, waiting and waiting...

First few week ago I signed up to TeliaSonera mailing list for up coming release details. I was a bit disappointed when they announced the service plans , since I got no information about that when it happened, only days after (I had details in my RSS before). In Finland it will be offered with same service plans and rules as for whole TeliaSonera market area.

On July 1st I got both email and SMS about the pricing plans and note to call to special iPhone order-line to confirm my purchase and to select the model and store location where

A while ago I posted about the Gigabyte design competition. As I was saying that I was taking a leap of faith to see if it would fly or not. I can now say that it did not. Either I just don't have enough visitors or the idea is not interesting (I think the first reason) ;(

So because there was no single entry posted, the competition is now ended. If there would have been even one, then that would have been an automatic winner.

Maybe I will try this again with cooperating with some other site/blog and perhaps up the prize if possible. Oh well - let me know if you have any suggestions.

S60 team has an updated version of the "S60 touch user interface" video, this one give a bit more detail about what can be expected from Nokia's up comming "iPhone" killer phones.

As I'm doing this as an individual and not as a business I have no limitations and I can set the rules myself ;)

I never have had a laptop that has a backlight keyboard, my powerbook is too old for that. And to be honest I really have not needed one before either. My earlier UMPC was a Amtek T700, that has no keyboard at all.

Now that in couch surfing I have replaced my T700 with my eeePC that has a keyboard (doh!) and if I'm typing in a dark room, while watching TV (not really), I have to fold the screen down a bit to see the keys, since I don't know how to touch type.

So I think this hack for sure, is really cool and cheap too.

eeePC usage and feedback

I now have had my eeePC long enough that I can give some insight to my experiences.

I will start with the first and foremost - majority of people that see me using this are compelled by it's size, and from many their first comments typically are - "I want one, where can I buy one", without ever talking about the features, OS, etc. Just the size and how it looks is enough (looks=regular laptop form factor but just smaller).

When they hear that it's full xp, with internal, mobile broadband (3G HSDPA), touch screen for about 1000 EUR, they think it's a great value. Of course what I have is not available in any stores and not for that price either. Actually

Tiny little helper

First I have to apologize for my absence. I got virus in my "own system" and I have been really sick in bed for almost two weeks. I got really bad flu and fever for over a week. Not fun at all!

Luckily I had my 3G eeePC beside me, so when ever I felt up for it I could do some light surfing and stuff, but nothing serious at all. Today I'm finally feeling better and the fever is gone, so I'm up for some bogging as well.

After months of reading news, blog entries, unboxings, hand's on's, first experiences, hacks and mods etc. about Asus eeepc , I finally got my very own eeePC at the very low bargain price of 1200 euro's (gear, parts, hacks and setup)!

I knew what I wanted from the very start and I knew I could not get that just by walking into store or ordering online - no, what I wanted was an eeePC with build-in 3G HSDPA, touch screen and a Windows XP all preconfigured and set up, without any crapware done by someone who know's what they are doing (actually this same need is what inspired me to start this whole blog ).

Good news!! - I just got an invitation to evernote beta (see below). I have been reading so much about onenote (mainly from JKonTheRun ) and after I saw one post by GottaBeMobile about evernote beta program, I decided that this could be one for me to test. Why not OneNote you may ask? Well my user pattern is less with PC and more with mac, mobile phone, etc., so perhaps this will be good for me. At least looking at evernote demo video it sure looks useful...

I will let you know what I think of it later on....

PS. I'm also waiting to get some new mobile gear this week, something I have been wanting for a loooong time. Can anyone care to guess what it may be???

Gigabyte M528 first designs and a free template

My plans to go to CeBit this year did not go trough. I have been there at least 4 times before, including last year. But this year I could not go, even if I had already planned it.

So, like many other I'm following up on the UMPC stuff via two of the pros out there, Steve at UMPC Portal and JKK, from JKKMobile .

Since the Aigo MID was announced in CES, I have been anxious to do the design template and some design and color variation for this MID. As it now seems that the Gigabyte version will be available sooner, I decided to do designs for that first.

Cool photo viewer for UMPC's

I came across this really cool piece of software for showing pictures online, It's called PostcardViewer. I know there are tons of different solutions and websites for showing pictures, but this one is really good if you want to show images from your own website, for visitors with UMPC's & touch screens.

As a reader in websites that have picture galleries, it's painfully slow to browse trough lot's of pictures - You know, click, wait, click wait, back, click etc. With this PostcardViewer you get one set of images at once with easy and good looking browsing.

Modu - make no connections?

This new Modu seems to be all over the UMPC space (also here, here and here). It's a very interesting concept and at some point I was thinking of very similar way. You can read some of my thinking at Ari Jaaksis blog, Mobile (internet) is dead - it's one of those Anonymous comments there.

However this seems to indicate that most of the things we use in our life will be willing to bend around the, yet unknown device. So do we really expect world to change because of this device?

What a start for the 2008

One thing now that CES 2008 is in full speed, and it's time to commercially launch some MID's to public it's becoming VERY VERY clear that the terminology to describe these "computer devices" is REALLY getting out of hands.

Before Microsoft started their big UMPC hype campaign, there were some other terms that were used - I guess Ultraportable, subnotebook, mini-laptop etc. were some of the names and also term like mobile computer was on the rise. (see the number of Google hits for the term links).

Is Benq mid the first one to have multiple colors?

I really like this Benq mid design, I guess it may be the first mid that is showing some color options, because I have seen it both as blue and red. It's interesting to see that, the black one does not look bad at all ;)

I just wish it would have slide out keyboard. Anyhow I did some additional color versions below and one design as well.

ps. I really dont like this "is it MID or UMPC?" issue. Is mid trying to say it got linux inside or wha's the "real" differense, does anyone care to help me out with this?

New Aigo Mid or UMPC

This Aigo Mid/UMPC is looking really promising. It's got almost all the features in right design that is needed, very similar to Nokia N810, with 4,8" screen but expected to have much more power. They are describing it to have full internet experience. Oh - and yes it's got slide out keyboard.

It seems that UMPC portal & JKKmobile are really on top of CES happenings, maybe that's because they are taking their distance to whole CES and are tracking multiple sources of information from their powerful desktop setup's? If you really want to stay on top of the CES game, log into UMPC portal & JKK mobile. For a little less intense follow-up, just listen their daily CES podcasts focusing on Mid's and UMPC's.

I saw this very interesting UMPC store - BuildYourUMPC.com. Particularly in UMPC's it's very difficult to know what model would be good for use, so that's why this looks like a perfect solutions. You and test any of available UMPC for a week , for only 75$. Makes it really wort the money specially if you are considering to buy one of the more expensive devices like OQO or Flybook.

I just got this tiny tiny helicopter few days ago. Earlier in my life I have had many different radio controlled car, helicopters, planes etc. since that was one of hobbies. Back then and still today those more serious "toys" can cost thousands and thousands of dollars, with professional computer radios, gyros, nitro engines etc. But I have given up on that hobby in more serious level many years ago.

This one from Teknision Blog looks pretty interesting, since there is not too much application available for UMPC's with touchscreens. Seems that Adobe AIR is a good tool for creating mobile applications.

I really like reading these "new to UMPC" experiences, because they kind of take myself back to those first expressions, it's a reminder how exited I can get with fresh new technology in my hands.

Also it's a good reminder that even if UMPC's are almost 2 years old, we are still in VERY VERY early stages. Us that are more geegy to try or buy any new tech that comes to our reach, sometimes dont really see - when the mainstream "indicators" are starting to pop out...

Top 5 UMPC's 2007

This news from cnet Asia is outlining the top 5 UMPC's for 2007. It's a very interesting read, staring with the argument "pocketable"..

Compared to "original" UMPC concept, these all have keybords of some sort and it's interesting to see that keyboards and "basic design" are in top 2 - first Asus eeePC 701 and 2nd Easynote XS20. It seems also that they have given a lot of rating for low price points.

The number 3 - Gigabyte U60 I had a change to try out in Cebit last year and dont really understand why that's on the list, since to me that form factor is not really usable (unlike "similar" HTC Shift)

I have noticed that even if there are good instructions to doing some modifications or hacks, many are still thinking that they don't dare to do them by themselves. We all have different skills in different areas, so why not help in areas you have skills and get some cash in return.

What can I say? I don't think this is the way to reach the mainstream. The less geegy you can do, and the more "standard" (sometimes boring) you can be - changes are, the more sales you can expect from the regular consumers.

Even if this is far less than Samsung P9000 , flipping screens this way and that way with option to twist your fingers around to type stuff "could be useful", but that is a definitely a learning curve and not really a marketing point for the masses.

This will loose to eeePC - so why even bother?

As I was reading my RSS list and news from engadget about eeePC , I felt a relief that perhaps, current eeePC will stay as it is.

Before I go any further, it's important to know what I think about the UMPC's current market. Ok, I can agree with that, in the terms of following up with the tech news - It's always good to have new stuff - but!

It really dont get any better than this. Mobile computer needs mobile (not local) wireless connection. JKK has posted video and pictures of his hack - I guess this is one of those "not for average Joe" kind of hacks, so hopefully there are plenty of capable firends around to help.

Actually I'm thinking of starting directory of "helping hands" for different mod', because it seems that even if there are instructions many dont dare to do these themselfs - and in other hand capable persons could do these for others for cash. I can see that as a win - win deal.

Linspire on UMPC?

Having followed this Linspire venture since Lindows (and reading trough lot's of stuff about the battle with Microsoft, particularly in Europe etc.) and later as it came Lindspire - for some reason, or maybe just because of that I lost interest on following this venture of Michael Robertson.

I like Michael as an entrepreneur and follow up on his ventures. My suggestion for Michael with Lindspire/Freespire would be to move ahead to UMPC field. I wonder has anyone tried to install it to UMPC?

Here's some ideas why?

1. It's a new device platform that is gaining popularity and that is aiming really high as a consumer centric mobile computer.

Sure I have my own ideas about what I plan to have here in pimpmyumpc.com, but I thought that it would be a good idea to leave an open question to readers as well. So what would you like for this site to become, what kind of things would you like for me to cover in here? Just leave your comment and ideas here, so I can better understand how you see what pimp my UMPC really is?

Also if you have a good tips about modifications done to UMPC's, I will start to collect and organize those per device, for easy access. I have planned to have a three main categories.

1. Software modifications,

eeePC v.2.0?

While I was browsing trough some eeePC images with Google's image search, I came across this page that had some older eeePC news. I don't think this picture has anything to do with actual eeePC (I tried to translate the page to get some idea), I think it may be one those appealing looking translators.

Anyhow, I did some Photoshop stuff and put the eeePC screen to this and it does look good - doesn't it?

So what is this site going to be about? - Well, here’s a short description of what I’m planning to make it for.
