Simbang Gabi - St. Michael the Archangel in General Santos City

My Simbang Gabi at St. Michael the Archangel Parish; the youngest parish of all the 5 parishes under the Metro Dadiangas Vicariate (MEDA), which was erected last January 10, 2000 by his most reverend Dinualdo Gutierrez, Bishop of Marbel (Koronadal City). This parish had a very humble beginning when the Zaldivar Clan had found out that within the area of Barangay City Heights, San Isidro and Mabuhay a new local church will be constructed for Christians. So without any hesitation, they donated their one (1) hectare prime lot during the term of Fr. Art Pancho, parish vicar of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage (OLPGVP). Then on first quarter of 1998, an edifice of the parish was constructed. During this time, we had witness how the structure was built from scratch and we had even attended those days when it was very awkward to attend masses because of debris scattered inside and outside the church.

The main reason why this parish was established was to cater the growing population of parishioners of the OLPGVP added to that are the domestic migration coming from within Mindanao and as far as Visayas and Luzon. Thus it could be associated also to the reason, why General Santos City had become a melting spot of culture and tradition from Kapampangan, Tagalog, Bisaya, Cebuano, Ilonggo, Muslim, Maranao, Bilaan and many others. With this manifestation, it was noticed that pastoral needs was an urgent concern. So Fr. Art Pancho started the overall plan from looking for volunteers and workers, community organization which includes the chapel visitation, organization of the GKK (Gagmay Kristohanong Katilingban) in Purok and spiritual education thru the Parish Renewal Experience and lastly the formation of Catechetical program to reach out elementary and high-school bounded by the three Barangays. As to date more than 30,000 individuals and 30 plus GKK's members enjoy the great benefits of masses, baptism, wedding, burial services, confirmation, counseling and many other services or pastoral needs.

Let's try now to break down the physical characteristics of this parish. From corner Yumang Street facing the Purok Malakas, you could either ride a tricycle/ trisikad for less than 2 minutes or you could simply walk for between 6-8 minutes depending on your speed. From a distant you could visibly see the semi big cross; when lighted during night is color green. The parish has three entrances, two from the front and one at the back. The pathway is now fully cemented and had a wide parking area from left, right and front portion of the parish. Within the parish vicinity a number of trees, palmeras, bromeliads and other flowing plants are strategically planted making the overall landscape of the parish awesome. I even remember those days when Fr. Jonathan Sarcon hand fully and carefully maintained this green environment.

On the right-front area of the parish is where the candle station located and beside it is a short pathway leading to the grotto of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is beautifully adorned by ferns and other fauna's such as the vine plant which has red-pink roots that serve as curtains of the grotto and perfectly matches on the brick colors. Beside the grotto is a small function hall which is commonly used by the parishioners, lay members, choirs and other volunteers of the parish for small gatherings, meetings, seminars and the like. Next to it is the back gate, and then a small playground for children's was built so as if any parishioners have sons or daughters crying inside the church, they have a restful place to calm the children. Adjacent to the playground is the separate comfort room of the men and women then followed by the convents of the priests, which has a veranda on the 2nd floor and a cool car park. To the right of these convents is a small pathway leading to the different offices of the parish unto the back portion of the parish. Then on the right back-side of the church is where the divine mercy hall is located, free from the buzz of the parishioners walking in and out of the parish. The place is very solemn and well lighted, a very good place to worship our savior Lord Jesus Christ to the next level. Inside this divine mercy, you are free to kneel, stand and even lie down during your prayer or meditation. Beside this hall is a small room which houses some of the parish decorations used in weddings and other special occasions based on the Roman calendar. It has paintings and religious figures also of the Roman Catholic such as Blessed Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ, Santo Niño and Saint Michael the Archangel. Within the vicinity of the church, if I am not mistaken, I think I had spotted between 5-6 sculptures of Saint Michael the Archangel, the protector of the church.

The church itself has big pillars making the structure dominant and making it feel more Roman. The building painting was done neatly and the color is catchy, less stressful and solemn. From the entrance, there's a fountain of the blessed water and four large painted glasses with an image of an angel as a healer and protector holding a sword and shield. The entire doors of the church had wide railing making the church to be the most coldest and windy within General Santos City. Above the doors are the 14 station of the cross, each of it was cautiously painted making the final product striking. With regards sitting and kneeling inside the church, it provides better comfort compared to other chapels. The sound system was placed accordingly making the whole parish to hear every word of the Lord. I super love the priest long table where he bows down and worship the lord. The design and color of the last suffering showcase a very lively re-enactment of what happened during that significant occasion. While the church tabernacle on the right side of the crucifix has a design of a chalice. The crucifix is carved very well and have a shimmering reflection, thus we could emphasize more how Christ suffered for our sins. It has a creative background which the red color shows Jesus Christ suffering and the blue color depicts the ascension and love of Jesus Christ. Overall the architecture of the parish is tremendous, thanks to all the parishioners for making this happen. I am certain for more years to come, this parish will flourish.

Since it is Christmas season, the church has a 3 layered giant Christmas tree made from corn, one of most commonly planted crop in Barangay Mabuhay and San Isidro. Beside the tree is a semi shaped dome for the Belen, but unfortunately due to budget constraint it is still empty up to now and so the parish is looking forward of our benevolent heart to finish the design. I saw also giant parol hang on the church, which are designed by some of the Purok as their entry to the best parol design. Lastly aside from the colorful Christmas lights, a small stick Christmas tree could also be seen with a small note of wish list coming from the less fortunate children. Give it a try, pick one note and make one children smile this Holiday Seasons.

Let's always remember that Christmas Season is the time to thank God for bringing into our life Jesus Christ to be our savior. To return the love, let's help one another and share our blessings.

Simbang Gabi - Our Lady of Manaoag Chapel in General Santos City

My Simbang Gabi at Our Lady of Manaoag Chapel, the first and only Dominican chapel in Mindanao is located here in General Santos City the Tuna Capital of the Philippines. It was established last 2005 under the term of Fr. Ramon Salibay as convents and houses of the Dominican priest who are in a missionary service here in Southern Mindanao. But due to in demand divine service of priest in Dominican institutions / congregations / parishes, the mission was stop for almost 4 years. It was just last July 2009 when it was revived under the faithful service of Fr. Ramon Salibay, Fr. Ivan Obando and Fr. Norman Quilaquil. The chapel was blessed last October 2009 with the Our Lady of Manaoag as the patron of the chapel. The image was transported and a replica of the original Our Lady of Manaoag in Pangasinan; one of the many favorite pilgrimage location here in the Philippines.

The main reason why they came back here in General Santos City is to served and complete the Dominican family which composes of the lay, sisters and fathers. Some of the services which they provide are daily liturgical services, counseling, recollections, retreats and pastoral needs of educational institutions and community.

This year, with the help of Dominican volunteers and community partners they had organized a Christmas Offering / Gift Giving to children’s near the area. It is an estimated of more than 150 children’s will benefit from this act of kindness; they are going to receive slippers, educational supplies, toys and will be feed. For those who are interested to donate, the chapel had placed two big boxes for your gifts to the needy / less fortunate. In this way the chapel is not only a venue for liturgy but also a place where the community could share resources and help others.

I walked together with my mother going to the church for less than 10 minutes. When we arrived; the placed was quite full already of worshippers with the choirs practicing their exaltation caroling. I saw some familiar faces within the area from relatives, friends, officemates and individuals whom I usually glance during regular Sunday masses.

The chapel designed was very refined and sophisticated. It had great architectural design and has a small dome at the center which provides natural illumination during the day. Inside the chapel, the pews are comfortable to sit with; there's an electric fan and air conditioned running for the comfort of the worshippers; the sound system is a blast and has good audio output; they also have an LCD projector. On the left side of the chapel is where the altar servers sit and on the right side is for the members of the choir. I love the location, where the choirs are seated because when they sung the loudness of their voice becomes doubled making it more enticing for us worshippers to sing also. With regards to the Altar of the Lady of Manaoag it is well lighted and her white dress is so elegant. The chapel tabernacle is simple yet very catchy. While the independent image of Jesus on the cross / crucifix was very well carved.

Outside the chapel are candle station on the left side and station of the cross on the right side. The parking lots are located just a few meters away from the entrance of the chapel, thus for those who wish to visit the chapel, please avoid going late so as not to disturbed the mass. The entire area of the chapel is very clean, well maintained and cemented from the pathways to hallways to parking lots. Comfort rooms are cozy and have separate rooms for the men, women and handicapped. There is also a tree house and 2 covered facility for those who wanted to stay late in the vicinity.

The best thing about this chapel is the serenity of the place and it's greenery environment.

Big Glory Bay Salmon and Seafood Company Incorporated

From General Santos City Fish Port, we proceeded to the Gamay Eatery for a quick breakfast then went directly to Asia's newest and most advanced salmon and seafood processing plant. Big Glory Bay Salmon and Seafood Company Incorporated was inaugurated last August 02, 2011 at Purok Saydala, Barangay Tambler, General Santos City. This is a joint project of the Prime Foods New Zealand Ltd. and Alliance Select Foods International Incorporated (ASFII) one of the major players in the tuna canning industry here in the Philippines.

Before entering to the processing plant, we were required to wear white boots, white laboratory gowns and white cap that cover also the ears. When we opened the door, we were welcomed by sanitizer, brushes and host sprinklers. Then group by group each one of us put sanitized on the shoes then brushes them on gently. I got a weird feeling doing this, looking how cleaned already the boots were but of course sanitization should be observed or else we could not get inside the processing plant. On the other side of this control room, we used again the sanitizer then rubbed our hands firmly under the sensor faucet and get a wipes at the sensor tissue dispenser and lastly step into the foot bath for the final process of personal hygiene.

When we opened the door, the temperature was very shocking it's like I am inside a chiller. Unfortunately there are no employees working in action as it was Tuna Festival a non working holiday during our visit. Even though I am already quite used to cold temperatures of the mountains still it shivers my body. So what we normally did was to rubbed both our hands or hide our hands in our lab gowns pocket. The packaging area was not that big roughly half the size of a basketball court if I'm not mistaken. On the top rightmost part of the building a huge, quite heavy and quite sealed room is where the salmons are being smoke. There are two big sealed machines with pipes attached to the source of the smoke. Take note, even the hardwoods they are using during production are being imported from New Zealand. These native hardwoods gave the distinct taste of the products.

Next to it, we went inside the blast freezer room where some of the Salmons are stored. Hmmmmm temperature check? Well I thing I could share was that I wasn’t able to stand inside the room for more than 20 seconds. For reference I tried searching the internet and the results shows that on the average temperature dropped up to -60 degrees celsius.

Following, we opened another door step on the foot bath and opened another door, were the materials used for packaging are stored. I thing I have observed in this small area was the hang thick winter coat, I wonder were it is used and so without much delay we were brought to another room, where most of the salmons are stored and temperature; it's really suffering knowing the fact that we don't used any of those hang jackets. We did a very fast paced picture mode then runned to an opened area where the heat of the sun was present. It was really cold; my body was almost freezing when I had stayed in that room for more than 30 seconds.

After the freezing experienced we returned all the borrowed stuff and getting ready for our ultimate hot and cold salmon experienced. We moved to the other side of the building and walked our way to the 2nd floor, were the display glass of the many canned tuna products for other countries was displayed. I had seen different languages, which I am not familiar with... hahahaha :) Then on the right side was a very comfortable conference room where we waited for sir Salvador P. Magbanua and Ma'am Loida S. Rivera who provided us the Salmon, juice and skyflakes.

So what's the big difference between these two products? Cold salmon is marinated and smoked while hot salmon had an added procedure of roasting to enhance the flavor. Both of this salmon are ready to eat.

Cold salmons are perfect for hot summer months; you just have to used your pork, roll the sliced salmon and placed it on your mouth entirely. The appearance is more appealing for me but the taste does not fit my taste buds. I am not fond of eating raw type fish like sashimi not unless it's a Kinilaw version cooked in vinegar.

With their two products I love most the hot salmon because of the succulent flavor leaving a spot in my tongue to get and get more slices of it. This hot salmons are perfect for salads, pastas and biscuits as shown on the image above.

So if you are in New Zealand Supermarkets, check out the New Zealand King Salmon with the labels at the back printed "processed in the Philippines by Big Glory Bay Salmon and Seafood Company Incorporated. Last and foremost Salmons are good source of DHA Omega 3 fatty acids which have some health benefits like reducing heart diseases so grabbed a pack of Salmons now.

How To Get There? - The Journey is the Destination - PTB Blog Carnival

How To Get There? This is the most common question asked by some travelers who wanted to visit certain tourist destination in the Philippines and other parts of the world. Pinasbackpackers had already tried the different modes of transportation from land, sea and sky. "The journey is the destination" will be the theme of the 14th Pinoy Travel Bloggers - Blog Carnival hosted by Kara Santos. This will be a great way of sharing to other travelers, how we do travel in our own way.

A motorcycle is the most common means of transportation when I am traveling with my friends, officemates and co-backpackers. I have even tried driving a motorcycle, whereas I was the habal-habal driver; I used a Honda Wave with 3 passengers on our way to Balakayo Hills, the most elevated part of General Santos City. I had also drove in other municipalities like Alabel, Malungon, Glan, Maasim, Kiamba, Maitum, Polomolok, Tupi, Tampakan, Lake Sebu, Tboli and Marbel to experience the adventures and sights the budget friendly way. The habal-habal ride was also the means of transportation of some of my mountain climbing from the city/municipality proper to the jump-off point. It's really a super bumpy ride, with your foot hanging on the side of your backpacks or stepping in the backpack. My most beloved motorcycle ride was during our journey to Lake Sebu, I love the curves and as we glide sometimes our shoes get contact on the road. It's best also to use all terrain vehicles in hillside travel. The best thing about driving a motorcycle is that it's cheap and you could stop anytime and anywhere you one.

If I don't have the budget I just grabbed my mountain bike and pedaled to any destination to where my mind and heart desires without having the worries of how much I will spend on the transportation itself. With mountain biking I have discovered some places which I have never gone trough even in my hometown - General Santos City. I have tried biking from Gensan-Alabel-Malungon-Glan and enjoyed the pristine white sand beaches with the view of the Sarangani Bay. In one of the photos you could a sign that shows "GS 45" (45 kilometers), which only mean that I am halfway thru with my mountain biking from Gensan-Maasim-Gensan. This route was just a newbie route for those professional bikers. I just enjoyed the trail and the serenity of the place which I visit. I had even brought my mountain bike in Samal Island and explored the island by biking to the different tourist spots such as the Hagimit Falls and resorts. I love the downhill and I hate the uphill but no choice the uphill is the fastest way to burn calories.

Mostly of the mountain climbing destinations here in Mindanao we used dump trucks or Sadam to transport the climbers from the meeting place to jump-off point. The best thing on this kind of transportation is that you have a great 360 view of the environment. But you have to hold tight on railings, chains or someone beside you to avoid being injured and bumped other person’s head especially when you are between 50-75 persons per truck with the big backpacks on the floor. The most thrilling part, especially when the driver do not care bout his passenger treating us sands, gravel or sometimes pineapples on rough muddy and uphill terrains. The transportation itself is already a contributory to the muscle pain.

Another common mode of transportation for the mountaineers / backpackers is the topload especially when you are visiting far flung places. The ride is very thrilling and sometimes dangerous because you have to observe the electrical wiring, the branches of trees but still being on top of the jeepney is the most preferred way by backpackers especially me because of the great view.

For me this is the most boring type of transportation, you could not stop to any destination unless it's a terminal, checkpoint or pick-up and dropped some passengers. I had tried riding the fastest bus operators, the most common bombed bus operators and the carefree bus operators. From new buses with wifi to old buses that looks like ready to be part of the museum. From mabuhay class, de-luxe and ordinary. I had even tried riding buses during holy week where the most numbered passengers are present and thus you really have to run your way to the buses and even tried jumping from the window just to get in the fastest way, sounds cool but on the contrary there's no time to take photos on this occasions. There are also buses bound here in South and North Central Mindanao where it stops anywhere it likes, making it a tiring and long journey and not only that they don’t care for the overloading, sometimes the number of passengers seating has the same count to those standing. There are times also that buses are not that much occupied, so you are free to use the extra space free of charge.

Hmmmm my not so ideal means of transportation. Why? Simply because I do not know how to swim, first I thing I check is the presence of a life vest. If there are, then it's a cool ride for me. I had tried riding the small boats and big boats used in inter island hopping. My most beloved part is on the most front’s part where I sometimes stand or played around only on shallow portions, hahahaha :). I sometimes lie down also, then placing my hands on the sea creating a mini waves. I had tried paddling boats but unfortunately I really don't have the talent of properly navigating it. Motorized or paddled, it does not matter as long as it will drop us to the destination safely.

Private vehicles, you have the option to stop anywhere and anytime you like but sometimes expensive especially if it's a 4-6 passenger vehicle only. The only time I could ride this type of vehicles if it's a sponsored trip or invitational trip. I had tried riding a private truck then we stopped on the arc which says welcome to Banaue. I tried also riding an L300 van with 4-6 bikes beside me. When you are on private vehicles, it is very relaxing as if you are a king or a queen. But then for me, I preferred less this type of transportation because there's not much sense of adventure.

I had only ride roro (roll on roll off) twice from Davao to Samal and vice versa. It's very slow and frightening for me knowing that we are floating on a water surface. In Roro, there are a lot of transport vehicles carried like buses, private vehicles, trucks, motorcycles and bicycles. Sometimes horses, pigs, carabao are also transported beside you.

I had tried riding cabs, pedicab, tricycle, trains, airplane, passenger boat and calesa but I have no photos of it. I am looking forward for more transportation mode like a carabao pulling the bamboos; to ride on a carabao, horse, elephant or any other animals which allows someone on his protection and care; to ride on battle tanks, helicopters, fighter planes, hot air balloons and other unique transportation modes.

Before telling you the list of Cotabato City Tourist Spots, let me give you first a short glimpse of some of the decisions I made and the sights I have seen and observed on my way to Cotabato City. It was December 03, 2011 - 01:00AM when I fully decided not to pursue my climb for Batasan Biangan Falls and Hot spring and Garrock Falls in Makilala, North Cotabato due to time constraints. So I grabbed my laptop and search for possible destinations which I could visit for a day tour in Cotabato City, Maguindanao. Around 03:00AM, I had completed already my list, take a bathe then prepare my belongings and went to the Bulaong Bus Terminal. The non-aircon Husky bus bound for Cotabato City, which I rode leave General Santos City 05:00AM. Gensan bus terminal is of bay type, there are wooden chairs for the passengers, security is present from the entrance area, sari-sari store offers a number of meals and snacks for the passengers, no smoking policy is observed, terminal is clean. On my way to Polomolok, I happened to pass by the Dolefil Plantation, a view of the Mt. Matutum, Mt. Parker, Mt. Melibato and Nopol Hills. Then from Polomolok to Tupi, I had glance of the Tupi Fruit stand, nipa houses for sale and Susong Dalaga. Tupi to Marbel, has no ideal view. Marbel to Tacurong to Isulan to Shariff Aguak have the same view of the greenery of the rice fields. I happened to see also the Ampatuan Mansion; it was really huge and has great architectural design. The moment our bus enter the province of Maguindanao security forces are spread throughout the region.

From Sinsuat Avenue, Cotabato City where the Husky Bus Terminal was located I rode a habal-habal or motorcycle to Barangay Kalangan II, Tamontaka Bubong Road where the grandest and biggest mosque is located. To know more about Masjid Sultan Haji Hassanal, visit this link.

Within the area of the Masjid Sultan Haji Hassanal mosque, you could also sight the Timako Hill an ideal place for camping and water sports and recreation. This hill faces the Bongo Island. There is also a cultural village at the foot of the hill which showcase the traditions and culture of the Maguindanaoan tribe.

After an Islam inspired religious site, I proceeded to Shariff Aguak - Cotabato City road for a Roman Catholic site named as Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto. It houses the Oblates of Mary Immaculate retreat house, replica grotto, creation center, chapel, missionary cemetery, station of the cross, a mini-zoo with monkeys, ostrich, Purple Heron, Brahminy Kite (Lawin), rabbits and civet cats.

Next to it, I met with a fellow SOCCSKSARGEN Blogger, Ian Villanueva the author of SharedCorner. Have a quick lunch at Sinsuat Avenue corner Notre Dame Avenue. Then we walked all the way up to Pedro Colina (PC) Hill, the most elevated part of Cotabato City where a panoramic view of the city awaits the tourist who will visit the Cotabato City Internal Defense Command office. In this hill also, you could find the one and only cave at the heart of the city. The cave has a small mini-pool in the entrance and a crevice which allows natural illumination. It was said to be also that this cave has a passage way to other caves within the city. At the foot of PC Hill, is the soon to be inaugurated Tantawan Park which has the statue of Sultan Kudarat and will be the display area of the OTOP (one-town-one-products). The name of the cave "KUTAWATO" comes from two words "KUTA" means FORT and "WATO" means STONE hence the name "Fort of Stone" became now the name of the City (Cotabato). The cave served as the hiding ground of the natives during the Spaniards regime and attacked of the Japanese empire.

Since I am used to walking and trekking, we proceeded with our day tour passing the Cotabato City Plaza and Old Cotabato City Hall, which is now a headquarters of the marines. You can see a number of government armed vehicles here such as the battle tanks (Tangke de Gera). The city hall structure was so out-of-date; it was my first time to see a very old architectural design for the house of governments. It's like I was in a Pre-Hispanic and Malay era.

The adventure does not stop there, from the old city hall we walked along Alejandro Dorotheo Street until we reached the Tabunaway Boulevard. Ian asked permission form the in-charge to take some picture of the Rio Grande de Mindanao. I was totally amazed of how wide the river was, I even wonder if there are crocodiles as big as Lolong living in that river. The river does not have quite a good view anymore because of the informal settlers residing on the other side of the river. I wonder how and where they throw their garbage’s and human waste. The place where we stood was also the Cotabato City Wharf which were used years ago as a passenger boat port when going to nearby provinces. Up to know, there are still some boats that dock here but only to load and unload huge amount of supplies. It was my first time also to see a water hyacinth that grows almost a half-meter to a meter in height. A very great effort then had been made by the local government by using the plants as materials for making bags, basket and other native products. This is also where the water sports activities during the Shariff Kabunsuan Festival and the annual Guinakit are held.

Too much happiness had filled my heart after setting foot in the second longest river in the Philippines. We continued our tour walking the left side of the Tabunaway Boulevard passing through the different vendors of Crabs, Prawns and Pigek. It was even my first time to see a king crab alive. To see more volume of crabs, visit Cotabato on Crab Festival and see for yourself the crab race, biggest crab and heaviest crab contest. In front to this Texing site, could be consider as one of the oldest road with very old design houses and still standing intact after how many decades.

Next to this food craving stopover, we rode a tricycle going to MB Kalanganan to meet with Muhammad Mang the Vice President of the Muslim Chamber and the son of the renowned brass maker in the city. According to Muhammad Mang this was already a passed skill from their ancestors and for more than a century they still continue to produce the finest brass in the country using the traditional method. The spot where the materials used for making brass are heated at a huge amount of fire and most probably they have no big problems in terms of having a boiled egg and hot water for their coffee. Some of the items, which I saw are the brass gongs, plates and jars. Truly an amazing work of art, this should be preserved, promoted and protected by the Natural Heritage Society for the future generations to come.

After this cultural heritage site, I decided to purchase my pasalubong at the Public market. I bought a kilo of the mild native coffee coming from Pikit, North Cotabato for Php 220.00. There are actually three flavors (left to right) ordinary, mild and strong. The taste of the coffee was great and next time I will certainly try their strong flavor for an added intense.

Lastly before heading back to the bus terminal, we dropped by at the new City hall commonly known to the locals as Peoples Palace. The palace has a grand entrance with covered pathway on both sides and a very well maintained center island. We notice also that their street lights are all powered by a solar energy and it was mentioned that in future years to come this will replace the old street lights of the city. A brilliant idea to promote green living in the city. The people’s palace houses the Cotabato City Hall on the right wing, city library on the center and other government offices on the left wing. The architectural design of the building was very intricate, it's just like you are shopping on a mall.

Dolefil Got Talent and Chorale Competition

There's no stopping with the pouring of community related services of Dolefil to its bounded area of SOCCSKSARGEN. From orphanages and home for the aged of the Dolefil Light a Tree Light a Life, to the community empowerment, school and religion sectors of the society Dolefil Chairs for Trees. Now for the 3rd time this year Pinasbackpackers and other members of the SOCCSKSARGEN Bloggers were invited to witness the Dolefil Got Talent Eksena Mo To and Inter Division Chorale Contest Glee Edition. Six (6) divisions will fill the air of dolefil gym with sounds of Christmas carolings - 1. General & Admin, Finance and Logistics 2. Agri United 3. Quality Assurance Divison 4. Technical and Engineering United 5. Manufacturing Services 6. Cannery Operations. Then 8 grand finalists out of the 100 contestant will sing with joy to their hearts namely: Irish, Michael, The Duo, Jenny, Arthur, Analyn, Fella Merc and Rene Joy. They all undergone the normal process of screening on which they are to perform their piece then judges will vote yes/no for them to proceed to the next stage of screening.

The Dolefil Gym was converted from a recreation facility to a prestige stage. There were concert lighting effects that match the costumes of the chorale, providing extra moods and accentuate the singers of the Dolefil Got Talent. Not only that in order to make lighting and lighting effects visible, they even placed four (4) theatrical special effect smokes, fog or haze. There were three (3) projectors also that serve as an extra screen for presentations of contestants. Added to that was the simple yet elegant looking silver and white design of the stage. There was also a giant recycled ceiling fan and a number of microphones to fully capture the sound created by the contestants. The host for the night were perfect also in their outfit and give life to the event during non-presentation moments. There was no dull moment in short. Overall the Dolefil Gym was a jam-pack entertainment venue. Surely the 1,000 plus attendants enjoyed their lights and fog effect. Truly a world class events organized by a world class producer of high-quality fresh fruit and vegetables.

Unfortunately we haven't reached the grand fireworks display and the special presentation due to untoward incidents. When we arrived, it was already time for the VP and Managing Director to gave his welcome message, then later on three judges were introduced who were all have the great passion in artistic design, singing and dancing. After which the back to back Inter Division Chorale contest started with only the interval of leaving and preparation of the contestants. A sudden darkness covers the stage then from an instant; lighting effects started to glitters while the smooth and lovely voices of the Dolefil employees serenades all the guests. The costumes were designed in a concept of Christmas spirit; the conductors are in-front of the chorale overlooking and making hand symbols/signage and lip-sing of the piece. The head movements, the hand gestures, the body movement, the facial expressions, the piece, the voice blending of the employees made the presentation more entertaining and lively. I event got to the point of being jealous because in our company we do not have such bright ang long week competitions. It is always better to watch events during live performances and with that we are very thankful to Dolefil for inviting us to this significant event. This was my most beloved part of the program, I feel the children inside of me bursting and reminiscing those moments of childhood days when we used to roam around the city to sing Christmas carols.

After the fun loving chorale, one by one the 8 grand finalist of the Dolefil Got Talent serenade us with their masterpiece. This live singing of the Dolefil employees remind me of my Pinoy Dream Academy experienced, when we used to watch it in Metro Manila every week. The singers were almost professional in the way they project and capture the minds and heart of the audiences especially the crowed favorite - Arthur. He really sung from his heart and his movement, facial expression all matches to the line of his music. To the entire contestant, what a great talent you have. I am envious of your talent, take care of it and always stay low.

Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto in Cotabato City Maguindanao

When I arrived in Cotabato City, Maguindanao the first plan was really to visit the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, but since the Husky Bus did not have change for my bill, I was forced to stop at their terminal; so with a quick wit, I suddenly asked for a motorcycle or habal2 driver to dropped me at Masjid Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque. The experienced of religion tourist spots was pretty perfect thus I would certainly miss half of my trip if I will visit my own religion site. The friends whom I met at the mosque were very happy to adopt me to be part of their small group. We dropped by first on their transient house for a quick stop and to pick-up some belongings then we drove all the way back to the grotto. The spot could not be missed as there is a big signage that states “Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto”. Before we made a turn to the grotto, we notice a lot of students coming outside riding on a jeepney; I could simply say it could be fieldtrip base on how they look like.

When we entered the grotto, we were asked for an entrance fee of only Php 10.00, the surrounding was very serene and relaxing. There were a number of chairs on the right side, on which the tourist could have a picnic while enjoying the chirping of the birds. We continue driving toward the parking lot, but before we made it thru, we were welcomed my 2 giant ostrich the fastest bird on land, followed by the lonely civet cat / musang / milo that digest and ferment the coffee beans, and once it goes out his digestive system; it becomes the most expensive coffee in the world. Well of course after handpicking it should be wash and sun dried. I had also seen the very famous land animal on zoos which were rabbits and monkeys. On the other side of the zoo were the Purple Heron, Brahminy Kite (Lawin) and bird which knows how to talk; I am certain it’s not a parrot, I just don’t know exactly what species this was, if you know it please comment here.

Next to the Mini-Zoo, we entered another gate which houses the grotto, creation center, chapel, children park, retreat house and small cemetery. We were welcomed by Mama Mary, the queen of all saints and the mother of our Dear Lord Jesus Christ. At her side were two angels playing a trumpet shape instrument, with the background of huge trees freely growing without the fear of being cut-down. Next to it I saw a number of photos of priest, sisters, children, family and the like, all happily enjoying the service and love of God. The place was quite clean in terms of human garbage’s, making it a more profound venue to worship and asked God for forgiveness of all our sins. Infront to these photo wall are a number of benches to relax with while being under the care of giant trees that will protect us from the direct heat of the sun. The carabao grasses, was just not quite maintain properly.

Another best thing to in this huge place is to recite the Station of the Cross. It was hand carved in a Yakal wood measuring five feet by three I guess then placed in cement with bulb lighting and adorned by fresh flowers.

On our way down to the other stations, we had witness a small burial ground on the right whereas the missionaries of OMI (Oblates of Mary Immaculate) were buried as one family. Truly the souls of the departed one’s are very well taken care of.

After which we walked a slope ground leading to the replica of Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto in France. Lourdes is a place in France, where separate apparition took placed. The replica shows the image of the Immaculate Conception in a Cave and Saint Bernadette Soubirous, a 14 year old girl who praise dearly. Too bad I wasn’t able to bring a flower for this occasion. Please spare a couple of your minutes to visit the plaza to buy some fresh flower and offer it to the Immaculate Conception. At the lower right side of the statue is the source of the Lourdes water which many believers claimed to be miraculous. As long as we believe, miracle will happened in the right time and right place, and if does not happened, maybe we luck good faith or simply there are more other persons who need most the miracle.

This part of the place is the perfect spot for reflection with trees growing abundantly and the greenery of the environment provides an extra level of comfort.

We happened to check also the Creation Center an Educational life-size image of an animal with a hallway and small room to show more to the children and adults on heart the importance of the animals roles in the environment. This center was donated by the Rotary Club of Cotabato and Rotary Club of Harvey, Western Australia last 2007. For a short span of time, I was like a child and enjoyed gazing to this creatures and taking photos of them I love the most, the replica of Dinosaurs, they were so huge and looks very frightening.

Before we separate ways with the other group, we had passed thru the 3 kings carrying the gift for the Emmanuel and in front to them is a small Gazebo, with an image of two swans and the Immaculate Conception.

Unfortunately the Children’s park which houses the different Christmas decorations like the famous Santa Clause was closed during Saturday. The next time, I will visit Cotabato City, I will make sure that I could see this fabulous collections.

Dolefil Light a Tree Light a Life CSR

For this year, Dolefil had been throwing a lot of surprises for the SOCCSKSARGEN Bloggers and to the community of SOCCSKSARGEN region as a whole. After our successful observation of the Dolefil Chairs for Trees and Dolefil Kalsangi Club visit, we were once again invited for their longest running CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) program entitled Light a Tree, Light a Life. Whereas the different departments and divisions of Dolefil Philippines joined hand in hand as they showcase their creative skills in designing the 9 Norfolk Pine Trees at the pedestrian walkway of cannery entrance with thousands of lights and scrap materials that could be found anywhere in the Dolefil premises.

This year, December 07, 2011 marks the 15th anniversary of the Dolefil spirit to reach out to the different beneficiaries of this program such as home for the aged and orphanages. With just a few days left before the Christmas, still I can't see any Christmas tree and light decoration in our house and so this extraordinary event should not be missed.

During the start of the Program, VP and Managing Director Simon Denye the overall Head of the Dolefil Philippines shares his lovely childhood memories about his Christmas experience. Especially decorating the Christmas tree and of course searching for the gifts name after them. He himself was very much spectacled and amazed of the elaborate designs and getting excited to press the golden button. Next to it Sir Mel Hernandez gave a brief background of the program, where he gladly shared that all donations and collections of the different divisions will be doubled by the company to help provide the basic needs such as food and clothing’s for the children and elderly. Up to the last centavo, everything will be spent accordingly, which also includes construction of some facilities like halls, pathways and comfort rooms. The organizer themselves look forward for another 15 years of gift-giving to the community.

The program is divided into two categories, first the division race to collect a minimum of Php15, 000 for their chosen charity. The 2nd part is the Inter-Division Christmas Tree Decoration Contest. The 2nd part was, which I was excited most, the whole area in the pedestrian walkway was in almost total darkness except for the stage with little lighting. Then all of a sudden the loud countdown started and when it had reached zero, Simon Denye press the button and the lights were pretty perfect. I was very much captivated with all the designs of the different divisions and if I were the judge, surely I will be having a hard time to making the final choice. Not only that, as we roamed around the 9 Norfolk trees, the sweet sound of the Dolefil employees makes the experience worth remembering. From then I saw I a lot of my Dolefil friends, who even wonder why I was taking pictures using a cellphone camera and they asked me where my photographers were in a funny question.

I salute Dolefil Philippines for coming up with this event. Truly you are my very favorite company in terms of providing the best Corporate Social Responsibility in your surroundings. It's not only about business but how you reach out to the people behind the success of the company. Masjid Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah in Cotabato City Maguindanao

Less than 2 weeks from now People of the Philippines and other distinguish guest will witness the grand opening of "Masjid Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah" the biggest and handsomest Mosque in Cotabato City, Maguindanao located at Barangay Kalangan II, Tamontaka Bubong Road, near the construction site of Cotabato City Seaport. This would most likely to coincide with the celebration of "Crab Festival" and "Shariff Kabunsuan Festival" between December 15-19, 2011. It is expected that his Majesty Sultan Hadji Esmail Hassanal Bolkiah who funded this project will grace into this momentous event. Too bad the former president of the Philippines - Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who initiated the project in the pursuit of Peace and Development in Mindanao, could not make it.

According to Ma'am Ludy the project in charge and Ma'am Babe the project nurse, this grandeur mosque occupies 5,000 square meters from the 5 hectares lot which was donated by Representative and Mrs. Datu Didagen Piang Dilangalen. This grandeur mosque is so big, whereas more than 3 kilometers before I could reach the place I could already see some of the golden painted domes and towers contrasting the green mountains. This would surely be another fascinating sight for those coming into Awang airport and going out of Cotabato City; another beautiful man-made structure can be viewed from the sky. Facing the grand mosque, on its right side is the Timako Hill, one of the many tourist destinations in Cotabato City; then to the left is a controversial peak, which I wonder if anyone had scaled it already, this will surely be a great camping ground for those who wanted to see the grand mosque by night. At the back of the mosque, is the Bongo Island bounded by the Moro Gulf and Celebes Sea.

When I reached the place, I was welcomed by the friendly security guard, he inspected my bike race pack and asked me to bring my important belongings and leave the bag to his guard house. There was no logbook available yet, which only means that it's not yet officially open to the public. As I walk the lonely path, I was totally amazed that structures of this kind exists in the Philippines and take note in Cotabato City. A multi-million project which cost more than Php200 million and lasted for almost 3 years of construction. I kept on taking photos of the wider view of the grandeur mosque; the fountain, the dome, the minarets, the grass and the light post compliments the over-all look of the mosque.

After enjoying the landscape view, I walk towards the mosque passing the ramp of the main entrance with a magnificent view of the fountain. The main entrance and the domes on passages have also an inspired dome shaped. The mosque has two prayer halls located at the center of the building with mesh walls separating it from the ablution halls. Chandeliers will illuminate the mosque by night and the dome shaped at the center of the main prayer hall will provide natural light for the male and female prayer rooms. CCTV cameras were also installed at strategic points to ensure the safety of the believers. It is estimated to be that 1,000 worshippers can be accommodated on the prayer rooms plus hundred's of worshippers could used the two courtyard incase there are no vacancy inside especially during big events.

The most wonderful feature of the mosque is the mihrab, which directly points towards the location of Mecca using the modern GPS. I did use my phone GPS and it certainly points to the correct direction. The mosques have four minarets, on which loud speakers will be attached to call the attention of the believers within the area. Climbing any of these four minarets towering a height of 40 meters will give you a fantastic 360 view of the area, but sad to say Pinasbackpackers was not allowed to climb the tower due to some constructions going on. The 14 golden painted domes served also as wind towers that will distribute cool breeze to the rooms below.

According to the locals who were there making some final touches of the mosque, the site was formerly a battle ground of the MNLF and Armed Forces of the Philippines and now they are pleased to be part of the construction team to convert this conflict area into a place of peace and prosperity. This mosque will certainly increase the understanding and faith of it's believers as this will also served as the centre of Islamic faith in Mindanao.

For those who are interested to visit this grandeur mosque. From General Santos City take the 4 hours to 4 hours and 30 minutes husky bus ride passing Koronadal, Tacurong, Isulan and Shariff Aguak terminal. Bus ride costs Php 250.00 for non-aircon and Php 300.00 for aircon. Then from Cotabato City husky bus terminal, take a motorcycle ride of 7.60 kilometers and pay Php 35.00

Congratulations to the New Kanlaon Construction Company for the building design and construction, FFJJ for the fencing and APJ for the painting. Job well done. Once the construction is 100% percent complete, this will be turn-over to the Dilangalen Foundation.

There's another good reason why you should go home late and dine with your love ones, friends, colleague or schoolmates at the city proper of General Santos City. With the introduction of Macroad Steakhouse, it will surely provide it's customers a wide array of their specialty menu at a very reasonable price without compromising the taste of the product. This cunning restaurant with an intrinsic Pinoy touch is located at Lapu-Lapu Street in front of the former Manila Bank and resides at the ground floor of Villanueva Building, formerly the hot spot of the Crocodillios bar.

From a distant they have a big banner, which shows a very invigorating question, which was "Love Steak?” For us Filipino people, when we talked about steaks, we usually have the impression that it's expensive and could be afforded by high class individuals only. But that's not the case here at Macroad Steakhouse, they will brainwash you with their menu price once you get sited on their pre set-up table. Another noticeable thing was the warmth welcome of the staff and the owner himself, who personally cooked the meals for the SOX Bloggers; while training the future cooks of their restaurant.

While the owner was very busing cooking, we had a very great time in observing the restaurant environment. The place was quite small but good enough for food lover businessman, who wants to showcase his craft in preparing notable foods. I say it could only accommodate between 30-35 customers at a time, but that's not a big problem, in the future months to come they already have the plans for expansion; with your support surely this dream will come true in an instant.

The restaurant is painted with a mixture of red and pink, which delivers a vibrant atmosphere added to it are dim light design lightings which was made of an inverted pots simultaneously adorned with a lovely painting showcasing the Filipino tradition of "Bayanihan". The frontal part of the restaurant had only small Chinese bamboos, graced with fauna's and textile on their ceiling. Their wooden table and chairs provides extra comfort, thus you wouldn’t notice that the place is not air-conditioned. They also have a small glass cabinet with display of world class wines and brandies. Lastly my most beloved part was that the kitchen because you could greatly view how the foods were carefully prepared and cooked with maximum love.

Well enough of this environment details, lets go further with the main reason why we choose to dine in this restaurant. First we were served with their Salisbury de Cabana, a dish made from a blend of egg omelet, topped with ground beef and fried banana which in some way resembles a steak. The taste, substantially it was everybody’s favorite because it's damn tasty and very easy to manducate and in just a matter of minutes it was already gone. Succeeding was their garlic chicken with its tenderness, fully garlic flavor and crispiness suits our taste buds. Following back to back were their garlic shrimp and sizzling squid. Judging from how they look and seeing the face of those bloggers who partake it, I would say they enjoy their seafood experienced. The topped onions leaves on garlic shrimp make more the meal flavorful in smell.

Lastly was their strip loin and tenderloin connected with the obtrusive t-shaped bone. It was very well cooked making it good looking and the taste was perfect, juicy, rich beefy taste that satisfies our mouth with nuances of baguio beans, potatoes and carrots.

Poor Claire Monastery in Tupi South Cotabato visited via Mountain Biking

One week before my Pinasbackpackers Bike will turn into its first year anniversary I have decided once again to join with the General Santos Matutum Off-Road Bikers Association (GS-MORBA). Reading their facebook wall, they have scheduled a Sunday route at Trappestine Monastery, Landan, Polomolok, South Cotabato and so I replied a comment to their status, if I could joined and without hesitation their President "Wheng Hernandez Sakuma" and my friend "Charrie Bundaon" replied with a big yes. All was set, Pinasbackpackers and the GS-MORBA members were excited to pedaled in a sandy and muddy uphill and downhill terrain but suddenly the planned had changed due to time constraints, we haven't leave Jollibee National Highway on time. According to one of the bikers, who had been there already, if we are to pursue with our biking, then there's no way that we could reach the 10:00am Sunday mass on time, so they suggested to visit Poor Claire Monastery instead which is less traveled and the trail was less painful.

But before leaving the meeting place, Pinasbackpackers decided to take an early breakfast of Jollibee Pancakes along with other GS-MORBA members. On the table, I had ate with Gregory Dominic Velos, a well known and experienced mountaineer, caver, biker, photographer, race director of the renowned Gensan Eco Karera and one of the pillars of the Sarangani Bay Area Outdoor Club. He shared about their latest adventures at Sultan Kudarat, where they explored and mapped many caves along with foreigners who enjoyed so much the cave formations of the Province.

Later on, everyone grabbed their mountain bike and the next thing I remember; we were already pedaling the busy road of National Highway. This was the most dangerous part of biking along the road since we can't avoid reckless drivers so we have to stay closer with the group. When we reach the Mabuhay junction, we graciously make a right turn and pedaled the slight uphill cement road. As soon as we reached Habitat Community, almost everyone started to pedaled faster as if there was a competition going on. But of course it was just a part of their Sunday routine, they believe that if you want to be best in what you're doing then you have to put extra effort and that extra effort means more calories to be burned and more speed which will take the bikers breath away.

Minutes had passed, we pedaled dirt road, hmmmm most probably government funding issue, well that's not a scope of my travel journey for today. Let's leave them to the expert. We turn left towards Klinan 5 road while looking at the majestic and highest mountain in South Cotabato named as Mt. Matutum. Next to it our view shifted into community houses, we saw a lot of people enjoying their free Sunday time talking with their love ones and friends, others were dating and children playing the usual Pinoy games, we played before during elementary days. From a perspective view, it is where you could greatly differentiate how the urban children used their free time on non physical activities such as computer games and social networking.

Afterwards we passed by the Silway River, the water was not that high most probably between 6 - 9 inches. Some bikers traverse the river biking, that's when I realized in order for you to bike firmly on such terrain; you have to pedal faster, which only means that more and more water particles will get into your shoes. So the rest of the bikers, removed shoes and socks and carried their bikes gently as a baby; of course including the blogger. Naturally this scene will only happen in non competition mode. When everyone had crossed the river, we started pedaling again towards cannery road where we will meet and great with the thousand pineapples planted in acres of hills.

Shortly, we made a pit stop infront of the Dolefil gym; it is when, one of the bikers notice that a certain part was missing in my hallowtech crank, he temporarily repaired it and advice me not to put to much weight on my pedal as everyone was ready to take the long downhill cement road going to flying V. We crossed the highway and continued pedaling for a few meters then turn left on a dirt road. At its end part there was a surprise uphill and I was not able to change my gear so I pedaled it on middle chain ring, which was quite enduring.

When we reached its highest point, we were welcome by a very cold breeze while enjoying the mountainous view of Mt. Parker, Mt.Melibato and other mountains and hills. The gate was widely opened to any parishioners and visitors, who would love to listen to the word of God in their small, well lighted, well maintained and stylish architecture chapel. The silence of the place is really a wonderful place for reflection added to it was the adorned fauna surrounding the chapel makes more comforting. Giant pine trees protect and guard the nuns who profess their fate in the monastery. A grotto of the blessed Virgin Mary and an image of Saint Claire praying for divine healing to those who believe in miracles.

Pinasbackpackers could be associated to the avatar, which I usually brought with me when traveling. I first used the concept of avatar last 2008, when I joined the 3rd Annual Penek Busay of the Digos Active Mountaineer. This was also the first time; I did backpacking here in Mindanao, since I came back from a 2 year worked from Metro Manila. The avatar helped me with my struggles in the wilderness especially in moments of lost on the trail or for those times I wanted to be alone while reflecting on the things that happened through my life. Pinasbackpackers had been with me in many of my journeys, whether in food tripping, mountain climbing, mountain biking, caving, falls hopping, zip lining and many more.

Last October 16, 2011 I was out very early to test my newly downloaded GPS applications, which would come to be helpful in my backpacking / outdoor activities whether biking, running or climbing. I decided to pass my usual bike route from Mabuhay - Conel - Mabuhay adding the site of Japanese bunker as extra scenery for today's ride. From Malesido Phase 3 - Nuñez Street - Mabuhay road crossing Notre Dame of Sienna College was a cemented path. Along the way I happened to witness a father-son tandem doing their early rounds of jogging; to my estimate the father was between 25-30 years old while his son was between 3-5 years old. Most probably they were doing this for physical fitness, healthy lifestyle or preparing for some sort of upcoming fun runs. Riding my mountain bike early in the morning was very refreshing for the eyes especially for the greenery scenery. I also witness some houses who don’t know how to conserve energy at the time of 05:00am their lights were still on.

The lap 6 of my map, if continued to be traveled will lead you to the Bioseed Research Philippines - Barangay Katangawan. Crossing lap 6 and lap 7 was the Conel road; on this area I usually encounter a solo biker or small group of 2-4 bikers, doing their routines also. This area was also a rest spot of some runners. I did water break here and continued pedaling upwards until I reach the Conel check point then turn left passing the Purok Nopol. Crossing lap 13 to 14, turn right and you will precede to the Leyson Farm, Bat Sanctuary and Nopol Hills, one of the major tourist destination of General Santos City.

From here I witness a lot of farmers, who was very early plowing their fields, putting some pesticides, nutrients and other were busy watering them. In late afternoon, a group of Tulabong could be found within the area abundantly. The road taken from Lap 10 - 15 was a combination of sands and pebbles making it quite painful for the butt while on the other hand lap 15 - 17 was pure sandy, thus you have to go faster so that you would not eat all the dirt’s the other vehicles will throw to you. Lap 17 - Lap 19 was a less stressful road, it is where I was able to record my top speed for this ride at the rate of 37.8 kilometers per hour.

Few meters away from Lap 19 - Lap 20 was the location of one of the Japanese Bunker historically preserved by the Tourism Cultural Promotions and Development Division. This Japanese bunker were used during the world war II as defense structure, a lot of this exists all trough out General Santos City especially Buayan (2), Baluan (5), Conel (1), Ligaya (2), San Isidro (3) and Mabuhay (4). These dome shaped cement structures are half embedded underground so that it would not be easily identified when looked upon the sky. Some of which were located inside a farmland, subdivision and even shoreline. From this viewpoint also you could see the almost perfect cone shape peak of Mt. Matutum. If you are to follow the crossing between lap 20 and 21, you will passed by a number of quarry site, then city slaughters house, small community ending at the Siluay River Irrigation System.

Lastly before proceeding home, I dropped by at the Our Lady of Manaoag Chapel of Dominican Brothers and lighted a candle.

Welcome back to my blog readers, for how many months I was not able to write any updates about the Takbo Gensan Series, since I had posted the Takbo Gensan Series 2011 Schedule, well of course exception to the Sun CitySuites Night Fun Run and Ice Castle Experience Hotel Night Fun Run, which were assisted also by the General Santos City Police Office. For this month of November, I would like to invite you once again for the 24th series of the longest running fun run in General Santos City. It will be dubbed as Bulilit Run in celebration of the Universal Children’s Day. This will surely be a great family bonding for the parents and their sons and daughters.

The Mountaineering Federation of the Southern Mindanao (MFSM) will be celebrating its 8th foundation anniversary at Sunset Beach Park; one of the newest resort in Kinawitnon, Babak District Samal Island owned by Mr. Jorge Garcia and Sonia Garcia. Impasugong Bukidnon Run for Light

The Local Government Unit of Impasugong Bukidnon, in its quest to help its locality especially those who have no access to electricity will be hosting the Run for Light this coming December 03, 2011. Impasugong is known to be the jump-off area of the 4th highest mountain in the Philippines - Mt. Kitanglad, which is consider as the toughest mountain trail and great downhill destination for mountain bikers. This event is for the beneficiary of the EFF and Isang Litrong Liwanag Project of the My Shelter Foundation.

All participants are requested to bring with them empty 1.5 pet bottles, which will be distributed to the communities. Pinasbackpackers as early as today is very much excited to see the lights coming from this very easy to create and install alternative light. This light cost only less than Php 100.00 and could last for how many years, not only that it is very safe from faulty electrical wiring which is the main cause of fire. This event will help lessen the number of household experiencing darkness.

Please be there at the Municipal Plaza of Impasugong Bukidnon, before 05:00am. Registration is price at Php 150.00 for adults (17 years old and above) and Php 20.00 for elementary and high-school students.

The Guardians of Lake Venado (GOLV) in partnership with the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines (MFPI), Municipality of Makilala and Provincial North Cotabato presents the 17th Mindanao Forum and Climb with the theme "Promotion of Mother Nature's Protection and Preservation through outdoor activities. This will surely be one of the biggest gatherings of mountain people for the year 2011. 1st Malambuon Festival Mountain Bike Challenge

Get all your mountain bike clean and gears ready for the 1st Malambuon Festival Mountain Bike Challenge organized by the Polomolok Cycling Club of Polomolok, South Cotabato this coming November 27, 2011 (Sunday). This will surely be a fun and challenging ride as it will be a full trail ride with combined non stop rugged terrain of hard uphill and downhill passing through the Dolefil Plantation with the great view of Mt. Mt.Busa - Tulad - Green Valley - Kiamba Proper

We were not prepared to leave yet; we already love the warmth presence the community was showing to us, but as we all know everything has its happy ending. We packed our things; leaving some of the foods which we haven’t consumed to kuya Lito our guide. We had an early breakfast with kuya Lito and after, we cleaned the house and its surroundings as courtesy to the owner of the house.

We strike a pose at their basketball court while the warm smiles of the children give us a deeper meaning to visit again this place in the near future, let’s say 3-5 years from now. At our back, is where the Tulad Falls located, and towards the right side of this picture was the trail leading to Mt.Busa. I will certainly miss our very relaxing climb in this mountaineer friendly community.

One last approved symbol before totally leaving the place as a sign of my thanksgiving to the community. As we descend back to Banati a horse blocked our pathway, everyone stop while waiting for our rescuer; John Paul Pineda the animal friendly mountaineer. I was literally surprised how he managed to move the horse, without having the fear of being kicked, no wonder he was the kuya Kim of the group.

When we reached the end part of the cable car, we stayed for a few minutes at the nipa while waiving our hands to the other end, hoping that someone could see us; so that we could ride their cable car. But unfortunately the operator was not around; they say that you really have to inform the Barangay Nalus, if you wish to ride it.

The picture above shows only, how overflowing the water source when climbing Mt.Busa. You don't need to carry on your backpack too much water weight nor hide a bottle of water along the trail, which you could picked up on descend. I think 1 liter of water is enough to suffice our thirst with water source spread along the community. This would be a very great water stop before heading for a very steep ascent to the engine room of cable car.

Reaching the top after 20-30 minutes muddy trek, will showcase the vast forest which we came from. We could even see from a far distance the highest community in Sarangani Province. For the record, the peak of Mt. Busa could not be seen from here, it is at the back of one of the green valley on the right.

We pursue our trek after some action thrilling post at the cable car but before reaching the Green Valley community, a heavy rain welcomed; we then wonder if it's a blessing or its opposite because we are not on time to celebrate with our love ones who passed away. Minutes have passed yet the rain still continues to dropped, we then decided to leave the place if we wanted to catch up the last van that travels from Kiamba - Gensan. We armed ourselves with raincoats, umbrella and flysheet, while looking around for some habal2 driver that will take us safely to the SDA church.

We managed to trek for almost an hour in the rain, when Kuya Gary passed thru as; which we soon realize that he was the operator of the cable car. We rode his motorcycle and as we passed by we notice a lot of logs that are abandoned in the road, which only means that illegal logging was present in the area before. He even stopped us on some key location, where we could greatly view the Tuka Peak and the farmland beside it; he also stopped us on a location where we could greatly view the Maitum mountains.

Finally it's Day 3; we are now ready to assault Mt.Busa in Kiamba, Sarangani Province with Tulad community as the reference jump-off point. Everyone woke up before the sunrise rays covered the vast plateau. We had coffee and some snacks that will give us energy to this ascend. We even had ceremonies of putting off-lotion which will help us to drive away the leeches that might possibly bite us.

The first part of the trail was passing the different local community houses, then farmlands followed by the large trunk crossing. From a distant, when I saw it was a trunk, I was quite confused, on how I am going to cross it without having fear of falling. Technically speaking this was the most difficult part for me of the entire climb, balancing my weight in the trunk. I had bad memories of such crossing in the 3rd Penek Busay in Magkasilin Falls, October Clive in Amsikong Falls and Mt. Apo marble river crossing. When Pinasbackpackers and his team had successfully crossed the trunk, he notices that the huge boulders spread throughout the river which create mini-falls, providing pleasure for the eyes. It was a 15-20 minutes trek alongside of the river, and our guide kuya Lito informed us that this water flow was contributory to the rapids of the white water tubing at Pangi River.

Next to this river trail, I had saw once again a very huge trunk which was inclined to utmost 60 degrees and they were joking around that we need to pass it, I was scared a bit of their joke, but then I realize a small passage on the side of the trunk and so my nervousness was lessen (hehehehe). After passing through, we were welcomed by a long steep ascend, which nearly take away all our energy. Hence when we saw a small flat portion, we have our limited 1 minute break while enjoying the view of the river and some faunas that surrounds the area.

The strenuous ascend was finished, it was followed by a walking in the park, making it more relaxing. Along the trail, a local villager passes through us and we had a short chit-chat from him. He informed us that he will traverse the mountain to go home to their home place at Dimamis. We even asked him, why not ride a van going home. He replied it was expensive and it will consume the same amount of time when traveling, so for him this was already a shortcut. I had his name on my cellphone noted but it was accidentally deleted thus let the picture show you how happy the local when trekking with us. For more than 5-6 hours of trek, he only has a 500ml of water, how amazing he controls his thirst.

As we go higher, the forest becomes foggier; the ridge becomes narrower and mossier; as if looking it was a giant caterpillar stuck on the trunk. On this part of the trail, the rays of the sun could penetrate thus there was a lesser chance of leeches encounter. We could also clearly view the left and right ridges that serve us guardians of the deer’s that roamed around Mt.Busa. I wonder how many wild deer’s I could see in the forest, but kuya Lito informed us that they were afraid of humans and so our group wasn’t able to encounter anything.

Few minutes before we reach the open peak, we could greatly hear the voices of the sweeper of those who climb ahead of us. We were given a chance of having photo ops with them. As they leave the area, we had our quick lunch then later on proceeded with a 5 minute trek to reach the topmost part of Mt.Busa, where the campsite was located. The place was quite small and could nearly accommodate only 5-7 tents lying on a flat ground. The shade of the trees with numerous wild orchids attached to them provides a less direct heat for the morning. Thus if you want to lie down and wait for shooting stars, then you have to go back to the open area. It should be noted also that cityscape view is not available when at the peak of Mt.Busa. Water source is available on the other side of the ridge, but you have to trek for nearly 30-45 minutes according to our guide.

Just before 12:00pm, we started to descend back to Tulad community; we had a combination of run-trek-run while adding another great memory to be shared and cherished. When we reached the river streams, we take a dip at the cold rushing water for more than an hour then head back to the same route we pass early morning. Once again I got reunited with the large trunk but with our 2nd encounter, my fear was quite lower down as happiness had already filled me when we reached the peak.

When we reached the community, we suddenly grabbed our plates and utensils and ate the food prepared by Ann, Raffy and Molong. The tinolang manok that cause Php 150.00 per piece of uncooked chicken was very rewarding. Minutes later, the last group bid farewell goodbye, while we decided to stay and spend the remaining hours with the community rather than trekking in the night. Before heading to the house of Jean, we clean the SDA chapel surroundings and pick-up some trashes. Pass the hour of 06:00pm when everything was already cleaned and all our materials brought inside the house, we had an opened discussions about anything and everything we could share about our insight and experience for this climb, which was tagged by other climbers to be more difficult than Mt. Matutum. We do not consider this mountain difficult rather than tricky; the next time someone visit this mountain, we could impart to them how they are going to climb the mountain more relaxing and enjoyable.

We close the night by eating together as one family while sited restfully inside the house. After dinner we had realize that, few hours from that moment would be already November 1 - all saints day, and it comes to our mind the movies, which depicts a community in the uplands with no lighting and then a mythical creature will attack us. They had soon realized how frightened Pinasbackpackers was and they wonder how I became a mountaineer, knowing that mountaineers sleeps at the forest. I told them, as long as I am in a group of trusted person, fear could be turn into fearless experience. Thanks everyone and good night.
