Ein Frohes Neues Jahr!

Das Neue Jahr ist da und der Zierapfel (Malus spectabilis) blüht schon.

Bei dieser Gelegenheit haben wir gleich den neuen Zwischenring mit Schneckengang ausprobiert. Um das Motiv näher heranzuholen wird einfach die Brennweite verlängert. Dazu wird zwischen Kamera und Objektiv ein Zwischenring geschraubt. Dieses Prinzip funktioniert sowohl mit einer Glaslinse, als auch, so wie hier, mit einem Lochkameraobjektiv.

Für die folgenden Nahaufnahmen haben wir den Tubus auf 73mm Brennweite eingestellt und eine Lochblende der Größe 180µm installiert - im Gegensatz zur Standardgröße von 380µm. Wenn der Wind nicht allzu stark weht, funktioniert es mit längeren Belichtungszeiten ganz gut.

New Year is here and the Crabapple (Malus spectabilis) is in full bloom.

We take the opportunity to test the new helicoid extension ring. In order to get closer to the subject, the focal length just needs to be extended. To achieve this, an extension ring is installed between the camera and the lens. This principle works with both, glass lens and, as done here, with a pinhole lens. For the following close-up pictures we extended the tube to 73mm focal length and inserted a pinhole with size 180µm - contrary to the standard size of 380µm. When the wind is not too strong, it works quite well with longer exposure times.

Mit Skink Pinhole Pancake in Mamiya RB67 Filmback auf der Tropeninsel Pulau Redang

Die Filmmagazine der Mamiya RB67 lassen sich sehr gut in eine Lochkamera verwandeln. Ein schmaler Holzrahmen dient dabei als Verbindung zwischen der Filmkassette und dem DIY Skink Pinhole Pancake. Dank des eingebauten Schiebers im Filmmagazin gestaltet sich die Belichtung recht einfach.

1. Kamera auf das Stativ setzen und so positionieren, daß die Richtung ungefähr mit dem gedachten Bildausschnitt übereinstimmt.

Bei Weitwinkelaufnahmen ist dies nicht so kritisch, weil die Kamera einen weiteren Blickwinkel hat als das menschliche Auge.
Eine Wasserwaage ist hilfreich, wenn Sie auf einen waagerechten Horizont Wert legen.

2. Vor der eigentlichen Belichtung decken Sie die Lochblende mit einem Finger ab. Nun kann der Schieber im Filmmagazin herausgezogen werden. Warten Sie einen Moment bis die Kamera wieder ruhig steht. Jetzt nehmen Sie den Finger vom Objektiv und zählen: ein-und-zwanzig, zwei-und-zwanzig, drei-und-zwanzig .... je nach gemessener oder gedachter Belichtungszeit. Nach erfolgter Belichtung, decken Sie das Objektiv wieder ab und schieben den Schieber zurück ins Magazin.

With the Skink Pinhole Pancake and Mamiya RB67 film-back on the tropical island of Pulau Redang

The film back of an old Mamiya RB67 can easily be converted into a pinhole camera. A thin wooden frame connects the film back with a DIY Skink Pinhole Pancake. Thanks to the built-in dark slide, film exposure is quite convenient.

1. Position the camera on a tripod while making sure that the direction corresponds with the desired composition.
When doing wide-angle photos this does not have to be very exact because the camera has a wider angle of view than the human eye.

A water-level or bull-eye is helpful if you desire a level horizon.

2. Before the actual exposure, you just cover the pinhole with a finger. Now the slider or dark-slide can be removed from the film back. Wait a moment to ensure that the camera is not moving. Now you take your finger off the lens and count: twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three.... according to the measured or imagined exposure time. After the exposure you cover the pinhole again and push the dark-slide back into the film back.

Wide Angle Pinhole Photography on 6x12 Medium Format Roll Film

Film is still widely available and professional photographers love the "gigapixel" resolution of this medium. Film can store far more detail than any digital camera sensor. Fine and coarse details are recorded naturally. Using a premium quality pinhole aperture on medium format film rewards the photographer with images which are truely special. A pinhole lens offers unlimited depth of field with equally sharp details throughout the picture, but due to longer exposure times, moving objects are recorded with more or less motion blur. Embracing motion blur as an element of time is a wonderful technique to expand ones creative horizon. A shorter focal length and a resulting wider angle of view produce a light fall-off towards the edges of an image. This beautiful vignetting effect is typical for wide-angle pinhole photos.

Tanjung Bidara boulders - Skink Pinhole Pancake

Felsen am Strand von Tanjung Bidara

Wir sind wieder in Tanjung Bidara, in einem freundlichen kleinen Fischerdorf an der Strasse von Malakka.
Sicherlich waren kreative Urkräfte am Werk als einst eine "handvoll" runder Steinbrocken an diesem einst tektonisch aktivem Küstenabschnitt verteilt wurden.
Die Riesenfelsen haben wir früher schon oft fotografiert und mithilfe von Graufiltern von dem Hintergrund der bewegten See herausgestellt.
Heute haben wir die mysteriösen Felsen von Tanjung Bidara gleich mit dem Lochkameraobjektiv fotografiert. Je nach Tageslicht und gewünschtem Effekt können die zwischen einer Sekunde und einer Minute variierenden Belichtungszeiten kreativ genutzt werden um das Spiel der Meereswellen aufzuzeichnen oder auch ganz auszublenden.
Leider ist die schönste Zeit, vor und nach dem Sonnenuntergang viel zu kurz um alle möglichen Perspektiven auszuprobieren - ein Grund mehr, wiederzukommen.

Boulders on the beach of Tanjung Bidara

Again we are visiting Tanjung Bidara, a small friendly fishing village on the Straits of Malacca.
Certainly, there were some creative primal forces at work, when a "handful" of round boulders were placed on this once tectonically active stretch of the coast.
We have taken photos of those huge boulders before and, with the help of ND filters, managed to isolate them from the background of the moving waters of the sea.
Today we used a pinhole lens right away to photograph the mysterious rocks of Tanjung Bidara. Depending on the intensity of light and desired effect, the exposure times vary between one second and one minute, which can be explored creatively to record the flow of the waves or hide them altogether.
Unfortunately the time of the golden light, when the sun is setting, is far too short to try all possible perspectives - another reason to return.

Sunflowers Infrared Pinhole 850nm - Nikon DSLR

Schade, bei allen digitalen Spiegelreflexkameras verhindert der eingebaute Infrarot Sperrfilter, daß diese Kameras auch in der Infrarotfotografie eingesetzt werden können. Bei einer betagten Nikon D70s haben wir deshalb diese kleine grüne Sensorabdeckung aus Glas, den "Hot-Mirror", einfach entfernt, ohne diesen durch Normalglas zu ersetzen. Die folgenden drei Pinholeaufnahmen wurden mit dem Skink Pinhole Pancake Versa mit Infrarotfilter (850nm) gemacht. Belichtungszeit 2-3 Sekunden bei Sonnenschein.

The rather old Nikon D70s was used for the three sunflower photos.

In order to enable the camera to take infrared photos, the hot-mirror filter which is located on top of the sensor, was removed without replacing it with normal glass. This time, an infrared filter (850nm) was used together with the Skink Pinhole Pancake Versa to take the following two infrared shots. The exposure time varied from 2 to 3 seconds.

Diesmal fotografieren wir zur Abwechslung mit dem Skink Pinhole Pancake und dem Photonensieb "medium glow". Es verleiht den langsam vorbeiziehenden weissen Segeln einen malerischen Halo-Effekt.

Strandkörbe in St. Peter Ording

Der Strandkorb hat seinen Ursprung in Warnemünde, so wurde das erste Exemplar um 1882 an der Ostsee gesichtet.

Erst nach seinem 125. Jubiläum gelang es dem Strandkorb, sich über die Landesgrenzen hinaus zu verbreiten. So findet man ihn heute in fern entlegenen Cafés und an Stränden außerhalb Deutschlands und sogar in Amerika und Asien.

Die folgenden Aufnahmen wurden mit dem Skink Pinhole Pancake, abwechselnd mit Lochblende bzw. dem Photonensieb "medium glow" an der Nordsee gemacht.

Aus der Sicht der Lochkamera, haben Strandkörbe fast etwas surreales an sich.....

Beach Chairs of St. Peter Ording

The beach chair originally comes from Warnemünde, Germany. The first of its kind was spottet in 1882 at beach of the Baltic Sea.

Only after its 125th anniversary, the beach chair gradually became popular on beaches and cafes outside Germany, some even made it to America and Asia.

The following images were taken at the North Sea with the Skink Pinhole Pancake using pinhole or photon lens "medium glow".

From the pinhole camera´s perspective, beach chairs seem to have some surreal characteristics....

Den Schafen kann es eigentlich egal sein, Ihrer Kamera aber nicht:

Das Herzstück des Lochkameraobjektivs, nämlich das Loch selbst bzw. dessen Beschaffenheit ist nun einmal entscheidend für eine hohe Bildqualität. Die ideale Lochblende erfüllt die folgenden drei Vorraussetzungen:

Materialstärke: so dünn wie möglich, aber von hoher Festigkeit
Beschaffenheit des Lochs: absolut rund und gratfrei
Lochgröße: entsprechend der jeweiligen Brennweite bemessen

Die Bildqualität steigt in dem Maße, wie diese drei Vorbedingungen erfüllt werden können. Dabei spielt sowohl das verwendete Ausgangsmaterial, als auch der Produktionsprozess eine wichtige Rolle. Lochblenden aus Kupfer oder Aluminium sind wegen Korrosionsanfälligkeit bzw. zu geringer Reißfestigkeit nur bedingt als Lochkameraobjektiv geeignet, dafür aber billig in der Herstellung. Diese Lochblenden finden deshalb oft in sogenannten Body-Caps oder Spielzeugkameras Verwendung. Ist deren Material zu dick, so kommt es bei den Aufnahmen zu einem Tunnelblick und Unschärfe. Zudem wirken sich hier Sprödigkeit des Materials und Korrossionsprobleme negativ auf die Lochbeschaffenheit und Bildqualität aus. Schon bei geringen mechanische Einwirkungen wie z.B. bei der Reinigung mit Druckluft kommt es schnell zu Einrissen und Veränderung der Lochbeschaffenheit.

Die Lochblenden von Skink Pinhole Pancake™ werden in industrieller Fertigung aus einem ungewöhnlich dünnem (30µm) und zudem äußerst festem Stahlsubstrat (high tensile strength >1600 N/mm2) in Deutschland hergestellt. Kupfer und Aluminium haben vergleichsweise eine wesentlich geringeren Zugfestigkeit von nur 200 N/mm2 bzw. 90 N/mm2 und sind deshalb für die Herstellung von dünnen Lochblenden nicht geeignet.

Aber auch die Lochgröße ist nicht egal, sie sollte der jeweiligen Brennweite (Abstand zwischen Lochblende und Sensor bzw. Filmebene) entsprechen.

Und der Qualität wegen, berechnen wir die Lochgrößen nach der Formel des englischen Physikers Lord Rayleigh, auf den hundertstel Millimeter (10µm) genau.

Nur genau bemessene, absolut runde gratfreie Löcher von hoher Festigkeit sowie Korrosionsbeständigkeit erfüllen die Anforderungen hinsichtlich optimaler Bildqualität.

The sheeps don't care anyway, but your camera should:

The heart of your pinhole lens, the pinhole itself or its physical properties, ultimately determine image quality. There are three prerequisites for the ideal pinhole aperture:

Material thickness: as thin as possible, but of high tensile strength
Pinhole properties: absolutely round and burr-free
Pinhole size: in accordance with a given focal length

Image quality increases to the extent, that the a.m. prerequisites are met. Both, the material chosen and the production process play an important role to achieve the above. The usability of pinhole apertures made of copper or aluminium material is limited to toy cameras and low-end pinhole-body-caps, because such apertures are not thin enough to render sharp images (tunnel view) and in addition are easily affected by corrosion which have a negative effect on image quality. Little mechanical impact as for example caused by compressed air, easily tears or ruptures the pinhole.

The pinhole apertures of Skink Pinhole Pancake™ are made in Germany with high-end production equipment using very thin (30µm), yet extremely strong steel substrate with high tensile strength of >1600 N/mm2. In comparison, the tensile strength of copper or aluminium of just 200 N/mm2 or 90 N/mm2 respectively, is not adequate for the production of thin pinhole apertures.

Pinhole size matters too. It should match the focal length of the camera (distance between pinhole and sensor/ film) exactly. Striving for perfection, we choose pinhole sizes according to the established formula of English physicist Lord Rayleigh in steps - by (10µm) accuracy.

Only correctly designed, absolutely round and burr-free pinholes, made of corrosion-free steel-substrate with high tensile strength, fulfill the preconditions for optimal image quality.

Spielzeugautos in der Altstadt (Memmingen)

Pinholeaufnahmen zeichnen sich durch eine gleichmäße Tiefenschärfe aus. Gegenstände im Vordergrund werden ebenso scharf oder unscharf abgebildet wie der Hintergrund in weiter Ferne. Aus der Froschperspektive gesehen, sieht die Welt manchmal ganz anders aus. Bei diesen Aufnahmen wurde die Kamera, leicht nach oben geneigt, auf den Boden gestellt.

Toycars in the City (Memmingen, Bavaria)

Pinhole photos show an equal amount of sharpness/ unsharpness throughout the picture - from foreground to background. Seen from a frog's perspective, sometimes the world looks strangely different. Here the camera was placed on the ground an tilted up by approx. 5 degrees.

Allgäu in Bavaria - home of Neuschwanstein castle and Skink Pinhole Pancake

Definitely the fairy tale castle Neuschwanstein of King Ludwig II of Bavaria is one of the most photographed landmarks in the world. To get the best view of the castle, just take a bus from the main parking lot in Schongau up to Marienbrücke.

The scenic drive to the Pöllat Gorge takes about ten minutes. After a short walk you will reach Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge) which is suspended 90 meters over the Pöllat waterfall. This suspension bridge was build by King Ludwig II in 1866. Although it was renovated in 1984, the fragile looking metal structures on its sides were left in their original state. Once you have made it to the middle of the bridge (some courage is necessary) let your creative juices flow and capture the magnificent view in front of you with your camera. How to photograph the most photographed castle in a different way? Why not wait for the best light and try pinhole!

Just like Neuschwanstein castle, the Skink Pinhole Pancake is at home in Allgäu, Bavaria. Enjoying a home advantage, the pinhole pancake was taken out yesterday, on a very beautiful day, where hang gliders were circling in the sky. As the daylight changed throughout the afternoon there were lots of opportunities to capture the same scene under different lighting conditions. Standing on a suspension bridge you need to install extension rings between camera and pinhole pancake to achieve the "right" angle of view.

Here is my favourite .... yet another picture of (the only and original) Neuschwanstein fairy tale castle, the most visited and photographed castle in the world.

Pinhole photography in the foggy Allgäu highlands

An einem nebligen Wintertag denkt man nicht unbedigt an einen Spaziergang über die Wiesen der Allgäuer Alm. Trotzdem hatten wir Spaß beim Fotografieren mit der digitalen Sony Nex und Skink Pinhole Pancake als Lochkameralinse.

Sogar die neugieren Llamas machten mit und ließen sich geduldig ablichten.

On a foggy winter day, not many people would think of going out for a walk through the Allgäu highlands. Nevertheless we enjoyed taking some pinhole photos using a Sony Nex digital camera with a Skink Pinhole Pancake attached. Even the curious llamas co-operated and patiently posed for some more pictures.

Finally, the Skink Pinhole Pancake with 100° angle of view is now available for Leica M cameras.

With a focal length of 18mm the resulting angle of view of 100° corresponds to that of a Super Elmar lens.

Unlike, when using glass lenses, light meets the film surface or camera sensor in a pure unmanipulated way when it travels through a pinhole.

The pinhole pancake lens is totally flat and the camera can be carried in a pocket!

Im Zeitalter der Filmkamera bestimmte weitgehend die Auswahl des Films, wie sich kreative Ideen bezüglich Farbsättigung oder Kontrast umsetzen ließen.

Heute sorgt die entsprechende Voreinstellung der Digitalkamera für den gewünschten Effekt. So bietet die Sony NEX mit dem "Kreativmodus" vielfältige Möglichkeiten, den "passenden Film" auszuwählen. Wer die satten Farben des Fuji Velvia liebt, wird sicherlich mit der Voreinstellung [Menü] > [Helligkeit/Farbe] > [Kreativmodus] > [Vivid] die besten Resultate erzielen.

Diese Effekte lassen sich sehr gut mit der Lochkamerafotografie kombinieren. Trotz der winzigen lichtschwachen Lochblende, können Sie mit Hilfe des LCD Monitors der Sony NEX den gewünschten Bildausschnitt festlegen. Die Aufnahmen erfolgen dann entweder automatisch, mit Blendenpriorität oder manuell. Dank der unendlichen Schärfentiefe der Lochblende entfällt das "Scharfstellen". Für Langzeitbelichtung wählen Sie [Menü] > [Aufn.-Modus] > [Manuelle Belichtung] > [BULB]. Sollte die Aufnahme mehrere Minuten dauern, verwenden Sie mit der NEX 5 am besten die IR-Fernbedienung. Die Belichtung beginnt mit Drücken der Taste [SHUTTER]. Durch erneutes Drücken dieser Taste wird die Belichtung beendet.

Zone Plate photos taken with Skink Pinhole Pancake for Sony NEX

the short focal length of only 15mm produces wide angle photos with a 86° angle of view and vignetting (darkened corners). Using the zone plate instead of a regular lens or a pinhole aperture, the images leave a painterly impression.

Dieser kurze Film wurde mit der Lumix GF1 plus Skink Pinhole Pancake Objektiv erstellt, die resultierende MTS Datei anschließend in Nero Multimedia Suite 10 konvertiert.

For this short movie, a Skink Pinhole Pancake with pinhole was attached to a Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1. The resulting short movie was converted from AVCHD format for the web using Nero Multimedia Suite 10.

Spider Lilly - Skink zone sieve "soft glow"

this shot is a very good example for demonstrating how the zone sieve "soft glow" works. The petals of the spider lilly are standing out against the darker background. The zone sieve creates a strong halo effect on the contrasty bright petals of the flower.
