Fight Cancer with Belkin 'Hope' pink iPod Cases

Belkin's new "Hope" pink iPod cases direct donations to Susan G. Komen for the Cure non-profit network of breast cancer survivors and activists.

Some folks get a case for their iPod just to protect their fancy new digital media player—now, peripheral and accessory maker Belkin is offering more ways for iPod nano owners to directly support the Susan G. Komen for the Cure non-profit dedicated to curing breast cancer. Five pink-and-chocolate Belkin iPod cases sport the Susan G. Komen for the Cure logo, and dedicate $2.50 directly to the foundation. Belkin has promised a minimum of $225,000 will be donated.

"The cases not only celebrate the active lifestyles of women, but their empowerment and their strength," said Mark Reynoso, Belkin's senior VP of sales and marketing. "Studies have shown that exercise is a key component to fighting breast cancer. Our new cases for iPod help financially support the cause while promoting this healthy lifestyle."

Belkin first launched "Hope" iPod cases back in May with two models: the Remix Metal and the Sport Armband. Now, Belkin is offering five cases in total, including the Statements folio case for iPod nano, Pocket Blues denim case for iPod nano, and the Slim Fit for iPod nano. All are priced at $24.99.

The cases are designed for Apple's previous generations of iPod nanos (the tall, thin ones), rather than the just-announced video-capable iPod nanos.

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation was founded 25 years ago, and is perhaps best-known for its Race for the Cure events, a long-running series o 5K runs/walks held around the world.

Sadly, the days of showing your love for someone with a mixtape are all but gone. However, device manufacturers look to be gearing up for similar Valentine's day gifting by offering appropriately-colored portable media players.

Apple announced today a new pink iPod Nano, available with 8 GB of storage for $199. If sales of this particular iPod are not phenomenal, expect to see them repurposed as breast cancer awareness iPods.

Microsoft has taken the theme even further, with its pink and red Zunes complete with Valentine's Day-themed wallpaper, and "romantic playlists." The Zune 4 is available for $149, the Zune 8 for $199, and the Zune 80 for $249.99.

Just in case you were longing for that old shade of pink on the iPod shuffle, it looks as if Target has come to the rescue. An eagle-eyed reader of The iPod Observer sent in a pic and noted that Target stores in Santa Maria, CA are now carrying a special edition, breast cancer awareness iPod shuffle that comes complete with a $15 iTunes Gift Card.

The article doesn't note whether the iPod shuffle is sold for the standard shuffle price of $79 or whether it's being sold for more (or less). It does, however, note that the pink color appears to match what used to be the pink iPod shuffles before the revamped color line came about. It could, in fact, be a second-gen model. But that's neither here nor there.

Finally, for the man who has everything -- except a job where he can dress casually -- it's the Commuter Tie from Thomas Pink. The bright pink silk tie has a hidden pocket on the back that's the perfect size for an iPod nano, and includes an extra loop to keep headphone wires from getting tangled (though from Pink's promo pic, right, it looks like the wires will get a bit jammed anyhow, since the headphone jack on the nano is on the bottom). We can't help but worry that using this with anything heavier than a nano would result in a curious tightening around the throat -- not to mention a rather unattractive stretching of our neckwear. And if you're going to spend $95 on a tie, we'd like to think you can also come up with a few bucks for a dedicated carrying case for your audio player. Of course, all of this is irrelevant to us, since we're not in the market for a pink tie -- it would clash horribly with our pajamas.

SAN FRANCISCO — Steven P. Jobs, chief executive of Apple, introduced a new cheaper iPhone model on Monday that navigates the Internet more quickly, expanded its distribution overseas and displayed a range of new applications and services in order to establish Apple as a major player in the cellphone industry.

Apple, the maker of consumer electronics and computer equipment, had set a goal of selling 10 million iPhones in 2008, which would establish it as one of the major smartphone makers in the less than two years since it began shipping the original iPhone. Apple has sold six million phones globally since its introduction.
Analysts said that Mr. Jobs, one of the world’s best product marketers, had largely accomplished what he set out to do and they welcomed the moves he outlined in a presentation before software developers on Monday.
“This is the phone that has changed phones forever,” Mr. Jobs said.
Mr. Jobs said the new iPhone 3G, to be available in the United States through AT&T beginning on July 11, will sell for $199 for the 8-gigabyte model and $299 for a 16-gigabyte model. He said the biggest barrier to people buying the phone had been price.
Analysts and industry executives said they believed the lower prices would bring in new consumers who had been put off by its $399 price. “The price is clearly correct,” said Mike McGuire, a research vice president at Gartner, a market research firm based in Stamford, Conn.
As widely anticipated, the phone will run on so-called 3G wireless networks that allow much faster Internet connections than the original iPhone. During a 110-minute presentation, Mr. Jobs went to some lengths to compare the speed of the new iPhone 3G to the current phone and to rival phones like the Nokia N95 and the Palm Treo 750. He called downloads “amazingly zippy.”
The phone, sleeker than the original, will also have built-in Global Positioning System capability to allow location-based services. It will also have a longer battery life in some cases, five hours for talking on the 3G network and 24 hours for playing music on the phone.
The announcements came on the opening day of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, where several developers showed off software that turned the iPhone into a game console and a musical instrument. Others demonstrated programs that used the phone’s ability to locate its users on a map.
At one point during his demonstration, Mr. Jobs showed a tracking feature making it possible to watch on a Google map as an iPhone user drove down Lombard Street, the twisty tourist attraction in San Francisco.
Mr. Jobs also indirectly challenged Microsoft with a mobile Web service call MobileMe, intended to permit a user to synchronize a phone, calendar and contact information on the iPhone and multiple devices including PCs and other iPhones. The service, which will costs $99 a year and comes with 20 gigabytes of data storage, is similar to a service offered by Microsoft.
Apple’s obstacle in offering the new service is that its competitors, like Google, offer similar services for less. Google offers 10 gigabytes of e-mail storage for $20 a year.
Apple announced that it would begin selling the iPhone in 70 countries this summer; the current phone is being sold in six countries.

“Given the feature set, ecosystem partners, launch countries and the pricing of the iPhone, they are likely to hit the 10 million mark by September-October,” said Chetan Sharma, an independent consultant on the wireless data communications industry.
The company, based in Cupertino, Calif., announced on Monday in a regulatory filing that it would sell the 3G phones under different business arrangements in the United States. In the past, Apple shared service plan revenue with AT&T and other cellular firms. The second-generation iPhone will be sold without the recurring revenue streams and without the exclusivity arrangements it was previously able to command.
While trying to convince cellular carriers around the world that they should carry the iPhone, Apple realized that it needed to change the financial deal that it had with the carriers in the first six countries.

“We’ve changed our business model, from getting a cut of the future revenues to just a more traditional model,” Mr. Jobs said in an interview on Monday. “That’s enabled us to roll out around the world much faster.”
AT&T said it would subsidize the phones to attract consumers. Under the plan, unlimited iPhone 3G data plans for consumers will be available for $30 a month, in addition to voice plans starting at $40. Business users will be charged $45 a month for data.
By giving back the revenue to the carriers, which they may use for subsidies, Apple is hoping to dramatically increase its volume, as well as sell more Macintosh computers to iPhone users.
“It’s not about the iPhone,” said Charles Wolf, a financial analyst at Needham & Company. “There’s a tradeoff that Apple is making. The iPhone halo effect will be far more powerful than the iPod halo effect was. It’s going to stimulate Mac sales among iPhone users.”

In the meanwhile, readers are organizing regional meetups for launch day. - iPhone will launch in 20 countries on July 11th: Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the US. (France and Belgium launches have been delayed)- In the U.S., the iPhone 3G will be sold at Apple Retail or AT&T stores.- iPhone 3G sales time is rumored to be 6PM on Friday, July 11th- If all countries launch the new iPhone at the same local time (6pm), then New Zealand will be the first country where customers will have 3G iPhones in hand. This corresponds to 2am Eastern time on July 11th.- Both Gizmodo and Engadget have posted FAQs which address the basic questions about the iPhone 3G.- Reports of required in-store activation in the U.S. remain, but one unconfirmed tidbit we've heard is that customers with existing iPhones will be shunted to a separate line and will simply need provide the new IMEI number (printed on the outside of the box) from their iPhone 3G. Activation will reportedly then be completed at home after switching your sim card to the new phone and plugging into iTunes. There’s been a lot of hype with the pink Motorola RAZR. Even Xiaxue (Wendy Cheng) talks about it. She’s pretty popular among the young.

So what’s with the color pink?

“Both red and pink denote love but while red is hot passion, pink is romantic and charming. Use pink to convey playfulness (hot pink flamingoes) and tenderness (pastel pinks). Multiple shades of pink and light purple or other pastels used together maintain the soft, delicate, and playful nature of pink. Add strength with darker shades of pinks and purple and burgundy.”

Oh and from a design point of view …

All shades of pink get sophisticated when combined with black or gray or medium to darker shades of blue. Medium to dark green with pink is also a sharp-looking combo.

I guess Moto really did hit the nail on the head with a feminine exterior and dark interior colors. So the color pink does excite a lot of men when seen on women. Thus, geeky guys like me get double excited to see a pretty phone with a pretty face. I’m generalizing, but there’s truth in there somewhere.

On a side note, I have a pink shirt. Not a lot of men can wear pink. People say I can carry it quite well so I guess that’s a good thing. Wonder why. Could be a skin tone thing.

Pink Otterbox Defender Case Review

After I bought my new iPod Nano, I was immediately faced with a problem. I use the Nano primarily for listening to music and podcasts in the car. This year, here in North Carolina, we hit triple digit heat very early. I didn’t want to leave my Nano in the hot car all day, yet I also didn’t want to get it scratched and damaged by throwing it in my pocket, purse, or briefcase.

The solution came in a special “Defender” case for the Nano by Otterbox. I have used Otterbox cases before. They are known for their protective cases. Their Armor cases are the toughest you’ve ever seen. They are waterproof, dustproof, and crushproof…but they are not necessarily pretty. This new Defender line is strong enough for everyday use and it is very attractive, as well.

This case also gave me several unexpected perks. When I bought my Nano, I wanted the pink Nano, but I bought the silver one because it was cheaper. As you can see from my picture, the Otterbox completely encompassed my Nano turning it into the pink gadget that I originally craved.

This great group works at finding a cure for breast cancer as well as helping breast cancer patients get access to the care they need. So I get to help the fight against breast cancer while enjoying the protection that my Otterbox offers.

And that protection is considerable. The Defender case is not waterproof, but it will completely protect your Nano from everyday bumps and bruises. It offers 3 layers of protection. There is a clear polycarbonate sheet with a coating that offers chemical and abrasion protection, a hard hi-impact polycarbonate skeleton, and a softer premium grade silicone skin for added protection against drops, bumps and shocks. The second and third layers are slightly different shades of pink giving the Nano a two-tone look. This case also comes in black and clear or all clear which allows the color of the Nano to peak through.
The scroll wheel is completely protected, but the thin covering makes it fully useable. In fact, I found that the scroll wheel is actually easier to use when the Nano is in this case. It constrains your finger to the area of the scroll wheel that is workable. All the ports are fully functional right through the case. Each port has its own cover, so the case offers more protection than some that leave the bottom of the Nano unprotected for accessibility.

With just under 60,000 albums online, this site will probably have what you want - and then some. Tracks usually cost between $0.11-$0.15, and account refills can be made with major credit cards. The ability to pre-listen to albums is also a plus.
iSOUND.be has a similar price structure as JustMusicStore, but with a much different catalog size. They make no claims close to the number of albums that JustMusicStore does, but at almost 60,000 albums, this probably won't matter in the least - this catalog is still bigger than many other sites out there. The MP3 encoding rates are good at 192kbps or greater and are often at 320kbps.
Similar to JustMusicStore, there are two categories of track prices: those between $0.11 and $0.15, and those between $0.28 and $0.39 - and again there doesn’t seem to be any clear cut reason for a particular track to belonging to a particular category. Again, most wanted albums are usually in the $0.11-$0.15 range. Your price per track depends on how much credit you purchase ($50 of credit gets you the $0.11 price, for example). iSOUND.be also provides pre-listening to entire albums (albeit at degraded quality), so you can be sure you really want an album or track before you purchase it. Downloads are fast, and with the aid of an external download manager (FlashGet or the like), you should have no problem managing your downloads.

iSound and iSound 4X Speaker

Somewhat like a tragic Shakespearean hero, the i.Sound and i.Sound 4X's greatest strengths also become their greatest weakness, at least for those of us who do use an iPod as our audio player of choice. Since the devices are designed to connect to any audio device, there is no integration with iPod-specific features. For example, unlike most iPod speaker products, you can't hit play/pause or change the current track directly from these speakers. Similarly, the 4X's "device bay" seems a bit strange without a Dock connector (or any connector) inside, which may mean you have to place your device upside-down in the bay if the headphone jack is on the bottom of the device (like the iPod nano's is), although a true iPod Dock is sold separately. Syncing or charging your iPod through either device is also out of the question, although you could still connect a Dock cable while your iPod is connected to an i.Sound or i.Sound 4X. Considering these limitations, it's no surprise that Apple's official "Made for iPod" logo is nowhere to be found.

Sound Advice

Although marketing the i.Sound and i.Sound 4X as iPod accessories was probably intended to increase their desirability, in my opinion, it was not a good move, especially considering the lack of iPod-specific features. If you don't own an iPod with a Dock Connector and are certain you won't buy one, but you want to use portable speakers with some other product, the i.Sound is a great choice, and the i.Sound 4X is also worth considering for its slightly better audio quality, even though it has a higher price and a Docking bay area that is not very useful. However, if you are looking for a device designed specifically to complement your iPod, it would probably be a good idea to look at some of the other options before buying an i.Sound.

i.Sound

Pros: Very compact and portable (even more so than the 4X); impressive volume; Inexpensive.Cons: No iPod-specific features; average audio quality; speakers have no grilles for protection.

i.Sound 4X

Pros: Very inexpensive; good form factor and portability; volume and bass are even better than the original i.Sound.Cons: Psuedo-"Dock bay" is not very useful; same issues as i.Sound with unprotected speakers and lack of iPod integration.
