Sara Rose Tutus

What little girl doesn't look absolutely adorable in a tutu? I can't think of any, and I'll bet you can't either! Sara Rose Tutus makes the most beautiful tutus I have seen just about anywhere - handmade to your specifications.

When Stacy contacted me last Winter and offered to make Little Miss Lauren a tutu, I was thrilled. I mean, Lauren is a gymnast & not usually a tutu wearer, but when that frilly pink tutu came in the mail - she never wanted to take it off! The very next day at sharetime, she marched into her Kindergarten class with her tutu in hand and was the envy of every little girl in that room. Of course, all the other Moms had to know where she had gotten it because it is just the cutest thing they'd ever seen!

One of the tutus that have been the most popular in our comments has definitely been the Ladybug Tutu. Isn't this just darling... and wouldn't it make a great Halloween costume?... Just add a black leotard and an antennae headband (maybe even a sparkly ladybug wand) and you'll have a complete Halloween costume that was not only simple to put together, but can be worn over and over again after Halloween (and after all, isn't that the TRUE test of a great costume?).

Speaking of Halloween costumes, Stacy has some other really cute options, (these are just a few)...

This little Pumpkin tutu is also one of the most popular in our comments section. All this one needs is a green t-shirt and, of course, a sparkly pumpkin wand and a pumpkin fairy is in the works!

A Birthday Letter to Youngest My Daughter

Little Miss Lauren, today is your seventh birthday. It truly seems like only months ago that we brought you home from the hospital - long spindly, springy legs, a headfull of jet black hair and your now infamous lack of the need to sleep.

Today you are a beautiful, vibrant first grader... you no longer posses that headfull of jet black hair, instead your blondeness stands out from the rest of our little family.

You are smart and talented, but most importantly, you are a kind and giving person. You think of others too - for example, you had five dollars in your wallet the other day and when you went shopping with Grandma, instead of spending it all on yourself, you decided to spend half of it on your sister (all on your own). You have been, by fate, forced to take on the Big Sister role even though you are almost exactly five years Collette's junior. You take it upon yourself to help her with things like homework or getting dressed - turning it into a game so it's fun for you both.

Your intelligence at seven continues to blow me away - explaining things to me like the solar system, or how dinosaurs lived - things that I never even began to know the workings of in the first grade. You can read stories to me now and love to read to both me and your sister, things like Laura Ingalls Wilder or Beverly Cleary, stuff I was reading in the fifth grade. You're having your first, official spelling test today with words like mat, the and goat and you had them mastered by Tuesday.

You are an outstanding athlete. It seems like everything you try to do, you succeed in. When you began to take swimming lessons, you, at four jumped up three levels in two weeks and last year you jumped from a preschool level three to a grade school level four in that same small amount of time (that's six whole levels!). But, far and away your most outstanding sport is gymnastics. Yes, you have been in the gym since you were old enough to walk, first at a "Mommy and Me" class, then a preschool class and now you're part of an invitation-only pre-elite training program. I am constantly amazed at how you do the tricks you do and I cringe with fear every time you fall from the beam or bars. But, in your true form, you pick yourself right up again and keep on going. Your dream is to one day be an Olympic gymnast, who knows, if you keep it up kiddo - you just might me.

You greet each day with a new found excitement - ready to see what this one will bring. You have so many friends - I've often heard them arguing over who was going to be at your side on a given day. It's no wonder - as kind and outgoing as you are.

You are wise beyond your years - often providing insight to a situation that I would never have considered. You are your Sister's best friend when she has no one else, and you are truly my little sweetheart. It brightens my day every time I hear the words "I Love You, Mommy" - and you tell me often - I love that.

Happy Seventh Birthday, my little sweetheart. I hope your Birthday day is everything you are wishing for, and more... you definitely deserve it!

Weight Loss Wednesday - Lose the Weight Without Breaking Your Budget

You're trying to lose a few extra pounds, but instead of your waistline shrinking - your wallet is thinning. With the economy in a downward spiral, we're all trying to find ways to stretch the almighty dollar, but sometimes special foods and exercise programs for our weight loss plans eat away a big chunk of our budget.
It is possible to flatten our tummies without flattening our pocketbooks. Here are a few tips to help keep your weight loss plan from breaking the bank:

Walk, Walk, Walk - Walking is a great form of exercise, and best of all, it's free!

Tidy up a bit - I know housework isn't the most exciting thing to do... but it's great exercise! All the bending and stretching really gets those muscles working.

Hit the Library - Check out an exercise video from the library. Not only are they free, but you'll be able to change things up regularly so you don't get bored.

Plant a veggie garden - If the weather is cooperative where you live, plant a vegetable garden. The gardening is another great form of exercise - plus you'll have tons of free low-cal, healthy produce to eat!

Buy Local and Seasonal - Produce that is grown locally will end up costing you less money because it doesn't have to be trucked in - same goes for seasonal produce. Try you local Whole Foods Market or Farmers Market.

Don't cook more than you need - Unless you're planning to use leftovers for another meal, only cook what your family will eat that evening. So often when there's just a little of this or a cupful of that, it all gets thrown away because there's not enough for another meal. This is where Grandma's old saying "Waste not, Want not" comes into play.

Water is your friend - We all know we need to keep our bodies hydrated, but try switching out your other beverages for water (tap, that is). It's free and hydrates you much more effectively than soda or other beverages.

Stock up on Beans - They're low-cal and very cost effective. Beans are full of fiber and if you add them to some brown rice, provide a complete protein. Beans can stretch a dollar a long way.

Buy a Big'Ol Bag'O'Salad - Stop by your local warehouse store... but don't go crazy and come out with $300 worth of snacks and paper plates. Instead, head for the refrigerated produce and grab a bag or two of ready to go salad. When a giant bag costs half the price of a meal size one from the supermarket - you can add tons more salads to your meals.

Make your own "100 calorie" snack bags - grab some sandwich bags and measure out a serving of your snack of choice (cereal, mini low fat crackers, you name it). That way, you can just grab a bag when you're feeling the need for a snack. If the snacks are pre-bagged, there won't be the temptation to eat straight from the box (and before you know it, the box is gone), plus the package will last longer because you'll only be eating a true 1-serving portion.

Work out when you come home from the market - Putting away cans? Grab one in each hand and do a few curls before they go into the cupboard - continue with the next batch... you'll be sculpting those arms and unpacking the groceries at the same time.

Get your cardio in while the kids are watching videos - For years, I danced right along with my kids and the Wiggly Dancers to every Wiggles song known to man each and every morning. The kids were happy because they got to watch The Wiggles (plus, they got some great exercise & didn't even know it), I got to get my heart rate up to target and keep it up for an entire Wiggles video - plus, who knows, if I ever need a job, I can always apply to be a Wiggly Dancer... hey, I know all the moves - right?

We'd all like to wear a smaller size belt, but not because we're tightening it due to our budget. It is possible to keep up your weight loss efforts without a costly gym membership or fancy pre-packaged foods - give a few of these tips a try and even if the economy picks up, you'll have saved enough for some new smaller sized clothes.

Weight Loss Wednesday - 5 Ways to Fight the Slump!

How many times has this happened to you...

You've spent all morning working or running around after the kids. Lunch was a couple of hours ago (you did eat lunch, right?), and all of a sudden... You're completely drained. That complete and total exhaustion that occurs mid-afternoon and comes on like a freight train is none other than the old "Afternoon Slump".

An Afternoon Slump can wreck your weight loss efforts if you give in and grab a gigant-o cup of sugary, creamy coffee and maybe a bag of chips or a candy bar. Sure, you'll feel better right away - but not only will you be consuming a ton of calories, you'll crash and burn in a few hours - only making things that much worse by dinner time.

This afternoon when the slump hits, reach for something that will energize your body and help keep that metabolism going, instead of a coffee or cola and a pack-o-carbs. Try a few of these snack ideas instead and you'll be dancing your way through the rest of the afternoon.

Water - it is very possible that you are slightly dehydrated. Drink a glass of water and get some fresh air. If that doesn't help, move on to our snacks!

Try some Lowfat Cottage Cheese with a tablespoon of no sugar added organic preserves or a drizzle of honey. Cottage cheese has lots of protein and the preserves or honey will add some healthy sugars to give you a quick (yet healthy) energy boost. Add a serving of nuts to the snack and you'll be energized!

PB&J on Whole Wheat - One slice of whole wheat bread and a Tablespoon of natural (none of that hydrogenated junk) Peanut Butter will give you some healthy fats and healthy carbs for a great boost. Add a small apple and you're really cooking!

Who doesn't love Popcorn? A mini-bag of all-natural (look for no hydrogenated fats!) popcorn, a string cheese and some pumpkin seeds would make a real treat! Watch out though, everyone else will want to share!

If you're a dipper - try a cup of hummus sprinkled with 2 Tablespoons of pine nuts. Use Red Pepper slices to dip with!

Finally, if you must head out to the coffee shop, try Starbucks' new Perfect Oatmeal! It comes topped with a dried fruit & nut medley. The oatmeal will give you some good carbs that will digest slowly, the dried fruits will give you an energy boost and the nuts will add some healthy good fats to the mix.

Fighting the Afternoon Slump is as easy as reaching for your snack bag (as long as it's filled with healthy goodies)! Try a few and see what a difference they'll make in the rest of your day - and your weight loss.

Bye, Bye, Bambi...

Sunday morning had to be right up in the top ten worst mornings in a long time... One Sunday morning a month from May through September, we pack up all the extra "stuff" we've been de-cluttering from around the house and head over to Santa Rosa to sell it at a flea market. This means that I have to get up at 4:45am on a Sunday morning in order to get everyone ready and out the door at 6am. I'm never, ever very happy about getting up so early on a weekend morning, but this particular morning I really didn't want to go.

Lauren had a birthday party to go to at 2pm. I figured Lauren and I could stay home this time, with the thought that she would get to her party on time that way... Eric didn't buy it, so off we went at 6am on a Sunday morning...

I knew it was going to be an awful morning right from the beginning - Every time Eric goes into Starbucks he just somehow can't get my order right (I haven't changed it for years) - so, smarty pants me writes it out for him.... Venti, DECAF, Organic, Peppermint Mocha with 7 pumps of Peppermint, Regular Mocha, No whip. Easy enough when it's written in black & white?? I got a grande, regular, peppermint mocha (they got the no whip right)... So, we headed out for our 1 hour drive....

About twenty minutes before we reached our destination, we're driving along, the sun is now up & I spot a deer coming down a big hill from the right (we were in the slow lane, so the hill was right next to us) - I say "Deer... DEer... DEEERRRRR!!!), Eric swerves to try to avoid said Bambi, and, of course, Bambi comes back toward us and WHAPPPP.... Bambi is travelling with us for several seconds on the front of our mini van, white plastic is flying everywhere.. the girls are screaming.... Collette is crying "You broke Bambi"... Bambi finally flies off and lands in the fast lane - it takes a few seconds to pull over (Eric was going to go off an off-ramp, but I made him pull over there). Luckily, we were around a slight bend, so the girls could not see Bambi lying there. Eric and I get out to see the car and, the entire front grill of the car is gone, the drivers side headlight and turn signal are dangling by their wires... geeeshh!! I guess it could have been worse, it could have flown up into the windshield or gotten stuck under the car... eeeewwww.

By now, I'm totally shaken up and I can hardly speak, but I call 911 (did you know you have to press or say 1 in order to get through once the automated system answers... what if you're really hurt or it's life threatening??). I get through to the highway patrol and they make sure we're all okay and then tell me they're sending an officer out, but (get this)... I might have to take care of the deer myself!! I'm sorry, there is no way in bloody he** that I'm running into the fast lane of traffic on a major freeway to do who knows what with a deer that has been injured and may very well try to hurt me!! So... we wait.... and wait.... 20 minutes later, an officer shows up - he's sort of weird, not nice at all... almost creepy serial killer calm... tells us he doesn't need to file a report because it's considered an "Act of God". He asks us where the deer is and I tell him it should be just behind the bend in the fast lane - but he says it's gone... creepy. He does help us unplug the headlight & turn signal so they aren't just dangling and he goes on his merry way.

Even after all of that, I still can't get out of going to the goofy flea market - off we go, already $$ in the hole as we now have a $500 deductible to pay to get the car fixed...

I knew it was going to be a bad day!
