Ah, the holidays. A time to indulge in good cheer, good friends, and good decor! (At least that’s how we see it at The Pink Pig). Serving food and drinks is so much more fun when you have beautiful vintage or retro-inspired accessories to do it with – so we’ve put together a little guide to the loveliest holiday glassware, bar trays, cake plates, napkin rings, and candleholders you’ll find in our shop. The Farmhouse - Inspiration from the Adirondacks - Part I

Farmhouses evoke nostalgic memories - real or imagined - of a simpler life and a deep, nourishing connection to the seasons and the land. So what makes a true American farmhouse? A farmhouse connected to the land and all its seasons, that dominates a community of buildings, and that's built to last using natural, indigenous materials.

Recently I spent the day with my friend Linda, who having spent much time at an earlier age hiking and working at summer camp here in the Adirondacks, now lives as a permanent resident here in this wonderland. She is a master at farmhouse and barn restoration, and her devotion and artistic vision are amazing.

On this particular day, we took a walk on Fox Run Farm, one of her recent projects in the making. This property has one foot firmly planted in the national optimism of the well-heeled early 19th century, and one toe in the currently struggling horse country of Lewis, NY.

The prior family were a typical 20th century farming family - ten children and hard times. They had a subsistence dairy farm, like many small farms in the area. Cream & milk were exported to Albany via the railroads. The rear addition to the 1790's barn has a milking parlour with thirteen wooden stanchions and two birthing stalls. We noticed an old metal sign with the herd's certification still hanging in the barn. The round silo foundation is next to the barn, and studying the barn's construction reveals large cut nails and vertically sawn lumber.

The house is a Greek Revival cottage, with double parlours on each side of the entrance vestibule. Dating back to the early 1840s, the brick nogging in all the outside walls and the Franklin wood stove setup all point to that time. The windows are faithfully reproduced based on the remaining evidence -they hold the soul of the house. The skillful craftsmanship and materials used in building the house and barn are flawless, and am flabbergasted that these structures stand so true going into their third century. I love the survivorship aspect of these buildings. The four by six foot outhouse had a news article in it dating from 1898!

Linda sums it all up by saying "The farmhouses, the barns and their fields are all in connection to each other and in context...variable of time, light, color, texture. The viewer sees what the eye allows - I believe houses draw your energy attracting whom they desire...mystical, yes.
This farmhouse is on the radar of the Preservation League of New York, AARCH and staunch preservation advocates locally.

A "Walk For The Cure" - A Small Town with a Large Heart

Each year the Pink Pig sponsors a "Walk For The Cure" in the town of Westport, NY to promote Breast Cancer Awareness. This blog post is about a small town with a large heart and to honor my friend Honora Carpenter, who passed away in the spring of this year.

Honora visited my shop one day in the summer of 2006 to welcome me to the community. Having lived in Manhattan for over 20 years, I was so taken aback by her warm welcome and her burst of energy...not to mention the fact that she entered my store all decked out in pink!

Honora asked me if I would help her organize a walk in town in October to promote Breast Cancer Awareness, a cause that was important to her as she had been battling the disease for the past 5 years. I agreed with much enthusiasm, and we both ran out placing flyers in the post office, the local general store and on any visible telephone pole we could find in hopes that we could gather a crowd to show up to do a three mile walk.

We set up on Walk Day with pink balloons and Tshirts, and to our excitement, we had 65 women show up to take that 3 mile walk, which ended at our fairgrounds. Honora led the charge in a golf

cart as she was unable to walk the distance - yet her love for her friends who came out that day to support our cause was overwhelming. I gave her a vintage pink velvet hat from the shop to wear, and it became a staple piece for years to follow.

In the spring of this year I had to say goodbye to my dear friend Honora. We spent some time time together before she passed away and spoke of how important it was that our mission to bring awareness to a small town should go on. I told my dear friend that I would not drop the ball. I miss my friend..... I miss everything about her. I understand now at the age of 54 what having a close friend means and how amazing it is that I managed to capture that in a small town in such a short amount of time. I cry and smile each day as our walk approaches and hope she will smile when Sunday arrives and we will once again walk our 3 miles in support of such a very important cause. Each year the crowd gets larger, with last year having 200 people "Walk for The Cure".

In honor and memory of my friend Honora Carpenter, I will wear the pink velvet hat and lead the charge to a "Walk for the Cure" to promote Breast Cancer Awareness! All monies raised will support our Fitzpatrick Cancer Center located in Plattsburgh, NY in memory of our friend Honora Carpenter.

At The Pink Pig, we will also be donating 50% of all proceeds from the sale of our new signature soy candle scent, Vintage Christmas, to the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center. Click here to purchase a yummy-smelling candle and to help us move towards a cure for breast cancer!

Mixed media mermaids by Laurie Beth Giacumbo

Who wouldn't want one of these sparkly, sassy mermaids hanging on their wall? Upbeat and whimsical, each features a saucily boozy element, whether it's a glistening martini in "Dinner is Poured" or a festive bottle of chardonnay in "Wedding Day".

The mermaids are the brainchild of artist Laurie Beth Giacumbo (just "Beth" to her friends). Born and raised at the Jersey Shore, Laurie was taking art lessons at an early age. A course in Collage for Fashion Merchandising led to a career as a bartender (go figure), but her love for art endured even while she was busy slinging drinks. After moving in to a townhouse on the beach with her wonderfully encouraging husband, she started painting everything - floors, walls, and furniture - and mermaids turned out to be a recurring theme. As Laurie puts it, "They're happy, silly, and lots of fun."

Laurie's sea sirens are crafted from paper, paint, pastels, die cuts, and glitter (ALWAYS lots of glitter). As Beth says: "they're made with love and laughter, and frequently a glass of merlot!"

A Sunday Drive In The Country

Waterfront Dining in the historic town of Essex, NY

My husband Fred and I decided, after he spent a long day in the garden, to close my shop the Pink Pig and take a country drive to the town of Essex, New York (www.essexnewyork.com) for dinner at a new restaurant which has recently opened for the season.

Nestled in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, along the shore of Lake Champlain, the historic Town of Essex is one of the most unspoiled ensembles of Federal and Greek Revival village architecture in rural America. The hamlet of Essex, founded in the 18th century, was listed in its entirety on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Essex is a postcard town and a photographers dream as it is impossible to take a bad picture.

Main Street is a quaint drive with shops, lodging and wonderful historic homes with beautiful gardens.

Also the home of former Governor George Pataki, with whom we had the pleasure of meeting as I stopped to take a few photos of their wonderful home. We caught them walking their dogs down to the lake for a swim.

Off to dinner, we arrived at the Essex Marina for a wonderful meal at the Rudder Club which is operated this year by Steve McKenna, Jonathan Pribble and Randy Sherman.

The Essex Marina (www.essexmarinany.com) is located on Lake Champlain and has a boating history dating before the Revolutionary War. In the summer months, life here centers on the water - and how could it not? Surpassed in size only by the Great Lakes, Lake Champlain stretches 120 miles north to south with almost 600 miles of pristine shoreline.

We were greeted by April our waitress and wisked off to our now favorite table in this charming place with a fabulous menu! The chef, Andy MacDougal will not disappoint you and I must mention the wonderful fresh desserts prepared by Erin Hall of Fancy Noche. What can I say.... a fabulous evening filled with wonderful food, service and atmosphere that will have you leaving knowing that you will be back for more real soon. The Rudder Club serves lunch and dinner with boat slips available to dock at the Marina.

Venture out and take your favorite country drive and if your travel plans have you visiting the Adirondacks this summer I hope you will make this historic town of Essex, New York a destination.

I love wrought iron planters to show off your pretty flowers and this scrolled iron 4 leg planter would make a perfect statement at the entrance to your home.

My clay turtles are slow moving and are a perfect accent near a pool or fountain.

The Adirondack's are a great source to find unique birdhouses and birdfeeders. I think these are just great birdfeeders and both would add some country charm to your garden.

A Marilyn Monroe Collection at the Pink Pig.

I'm sure we all have a movie star that we adore and even years after her death, Marilyn Monroe is still one of the greatest legends of the twentieth century. I have selected a few of my favorites to share with you, several taken by Milton H. Greene. Milton met Marilyn Monroe while on assignment for Look Magazine.

They quickly became friends and formed their own film production company which produced the movies Bus Stop and The Prince and the Showgirl. Marilyn lived with Milton in their farmhouse in Connecticut where is was able to capture some of the most beautiful photographs ever taken of Marilyn Monroe.

Her favorite perfume... Chanel No. 5 of course and I just love this poster of an ad she did to promote the perfume.

Some other Pretty Must-Haves are a wooden trinket box which is velvet lined for all your bling and a pretty bangle. These notepads are just darling and make perfect gifts.

For that special guy in your life I also feature a leather bound Wine Box with a photo of Marilyn on each side.

Paris Inspired Decor - What's new and exciting?

Some new merchandise has arrived at the store that I'm excited about and thought I would share.

Searching for Antique Treasures: My Antique DayTrip

I must say I have Cabin Fever as the winter months here in the Adirondacks Mountains are much too long. So I decided to do a day trip to Troy, NY. This historic city has an area dedicated to several streets lined with antique stores.

My first visit was to a friend whom I had met through my travels on the internet. Her store is filled with Cottage Chic Furniture and Shabby Chic Treasures and she certainly has a talent for displaying her wonderful pieces.

As I traveled further down the street I stumbled into a rather large Antique Gallery filled with a number of dealers offering anything from Primitive Antiques to Mid-Century Modern Furniture. The second floor featured an art gallery with the works of a fantastic artist Jennifer Lanne. I spent the next hour in amazement as I walked backed and forth admiring this artist which I would love to share with you.

Jennifer's paintings are rich in color and story. Jennifer paints what she knows...floral, fauna and farm with brave strokes and drenched colors that tell of fond memories and vistas filled with possibilities. Her work is strong and bright, classic with a freshness of her own. Botanticals and landscapes are deliciously lush and thoughtful, while barnyard creatures poised and elegantly simple. Jennifer lives and works in her 1870's farm in Ballston Spa, New York. Her art has been featured in "Country Living" and "Romantic Homes" magazines. I hope to pay a visit to Jennifer soon with the possibility of having her works available at the Pink Pig.
