Alone Here Again – Well Partnerless

Ade left for Bali this morning. He is investigating houses. We are looking at two different ones. One is close to things in Jimbaran and the other one seems a fair way out near a beach. It turns out it is only 15 minutes away from things. I like the look of it in the pictures and it is new. We have found out it is in a poor neighbourhood. Do we consider the 3 P’s of buying property: position, position, position! I am leaving it up to him to decide. He and Oliver will have to live there for most of the time. My company will pay me more than I thought for the cost of a container. I asked for this as several expats got a 20 metre container shipped door to door when they left. I asked if I could have cash to the same value. They have said YES! I am so happy about that as it’s a huge amount of money for me. It will pay for renovations to the house we buy and put in a nice kitchen. The plan is to buy something modest, renovate and sell it for much more then build a really cool minimalist house. I will sell all the stuff I have accumulated here over 11 years. Hopefully that could bring a fair amount of cash too. It’s scary how much crap I have.

On Holiday & Back To Reading

Today has been the first day of my holiday. This is the first time I have stayed here for a holiday. It’s been an OK sort of day. I feel very relaxed. Went to Yoyo’s and cleaned out two draws of personal stuff. Swam my 20 laps. I do 10 freestyle and 10 breast-stroke now. So I am feeling quite virtuous. Read for an hour. Haven’t read for ages. I need to get back into the habit of reading all the time. I am reading The Master by Colm Tobin. I started it months ago. It’s been a bit of a struggle. Partly because it’s a bit boring and partly because I haven’t read it over a few days like I used to do. I am determined to finish it and the devour all the other books I have on my launching pad. There are about 30! 80 days till I leave this cultural desert.

Leaving this place is what I really want. Sherry will not get the Yoyo’s house – no matter what. Maybe she is hanging around like a fat, moronic vulture, waiting for the last-minute to pounce and take the house because she has made it impossible for it to be viable for anyone else to buy. The person who made it seem like I could have sold it has ignored any of the messages I have sent by email or sms. How pathetic. Some people are just so rude and like babies. Just tell me you are not interested. I really don’t care. I will demolish what is saleable and stick a match to what is left. Or maybe I could just give the keys to some of the boys from Maluk and let them squat in it…. My Dad has been in hospital for two days now. He has been bleeding from the bowel. Sounds very nasty. But they can’t find out why. The bleeding has stopped and he appears to be OK now. Today has been a holiday. Nice day. Slept late. Went to the gym. Drove to Maluk to get diesel. Cooked hamburgers for Oliver and Ade.

I was handed an envelope yesterday containing the appraisal/bonus letter. It specifies an amount of money I will be paid as my yearly performance bonus. It also gives me a rating from 0 – 9. It turns out the figure is not the amount that is deposited into my bank account but is subject to tax. March 20th it goes in. It will be interesting to see what actually ends up in my account. Anyway that’s not the point. Last year my rating was a 6. This year it was a 4. Guess what? I am on GO SLOW until I leave. I think that was a phrase used by the trade union movements in Australia – I seem to remember from my days as an apprentice there. It was one strategy in the steps before striking. It sort of means not doing as much work. But in this place no-one will probably notice. I will just fit in with everyone else.

I worked my butt off today marking maths stuff and getting things organised for the student led conferences. My so called teaching partner left the kids homework just sitting there most of the day without the maths stuff in it. He did a painting during silent reading. That happens quite often. I lost it when he suddenly realised he hadn’t given out the homework as the kids were leaving and that it didn’t have their maths stuff in it. And I have 94 days left…Shit.

Food Glorious Food

Made a carrot cake today. Cooked pork chops, roast beetroot and roast potatoes last night. Cooking a pizza bianca tonight for dinner. God I love to cook. Ade and I slept in the small bed last night. It isn’t really a single but it’s not quite as big as the one at Yoyo’s either. Went to the gym yesterday and swam today. Haven’t been to Yoyo’s all weekend. It’s so nice having Ade here. Back to the fucking hell hole tomorrow – yuk.

Uneventful Week

Not much happened this week. Have continued my exercise program each night so I am pleased with myself. Haven’t stayed at Yoyo’s for ages now. No word on if the house will sell but the person concerned is away at the moment so I will have to wait until he gets back. School continues to piss me off increasingly more and more. My teaching partner is a lazy bugger. A lot of the staff have started wandering into school as late a 7.45. My class tried to take part in World Maths Day, but it was an unmitigated disaster as most of them spent the two periods we tried to do it either logging into the laptops, waiting for me and the IT person to change the Internet connection so it would work or waiting for the site to load. Ade arrived this morning which is great. He will stay here till my holiday and we might even venture to Bima – I have always wanted to go to Flores and this will probably be my last chance as I leave in June.

Enjoying My Three Day Weekend

Have been quite lazy. Yesterday was a holiday so we have a three day weekend. Got a bit pissed and played around a bit. But only safe stuff hehehehe. I am not going through the trauma of an HIV test again. Last night went to barbeque night at the Basai Ate. The board chairman was there. He has caused me all sorts of grief in the past. “No Oliver can’t come to school because you don’t live in townsite.” I’d like to smack that motherfucker. He is such a smug, arrogant cunt. There was a band. It was all so tame. Everyone had left by 9 pm. Back in the old days it would have been gone into the wee small hours. There’s no expats left here – maybe that explains it. Well I am sure it does. I miss the days when some of the teachers and mums would actually be so drunk they’d get up on the bar and dirty dance! This place is so fucking boring. I think I will wear a jilbub to work on Monday.
