Not Blogging Today

Not sure when I'm coming back or if I am, but since you were nice enough to stop by, I thought I should leave a note. The web has moved on since I started this blog as Pinkpackrat seven or eight years ago, and so, I guess have I.

I'm still writing here and there, mostly though I've taken a break from doing so online, although I still keep my Hubs on Hubpages up to date and occasionally add to the collection. I hang out on Google+. Check out the widget in the margin and join me there if you like.

Why I'm Done With Downton Abbey

I am so disappointed in Episode One of Season Four that I think I am done with Downton Abbey. I tuned in last week, after months of anticipation and what a letdown. I have never seen so many " set ups" packed into one episode in my life. It began to both annoy and bore me. In spite of wonderful ambiance and excellent acting, I just could not make myself care . Maybe I just have the typical 30 second American attention span, and have reached my limit, but it felt to me like they were trying too hard. The story line seemed forced and over the top. I know it is hard to top that Season Three finale but really. This is just too much. I'm on Downton Abbey overload.

I'm starting to find I just don't care whether Lady Mary ever comes out of her funk, nor am I much interested in what happens to Lady Edith and her married man lover/publisher. Lord Grantham is getting to be a bore, and even Carson and Mrs Pattmore and the rest of the downstairs crowd don't excite me anymore. That goes double for Anna and Mr. Bates who should stop being such a pair of goodie goodies and go off to America and make a fortune running a posh hotel in San Francisco.

For three seasons, Downton Abbey was a magnificent time machine that transported me weekly to a different era and location, and not only introduced me, but really involved me, in the tragedies and triumphs of people I came to love and care about week after week. Not since Upstairs Downstairs and I, Claudius have I been so involved in one of these historical dramas that the English do so well. But, like everything else, it had to end sometime. The internet is awash in Downton Abbey memorabilia, which is a sign that the end is near. Do a search for Downton Abbey on Etsy and you will find everything from Downton Abbey note cards and jewelry, to samplers and drink coasters featuring Downton Abbey quotes, to my personal favorite: Maggie Smith's character,the Dowager Countess as a cat portrait. No further comment needed, I think.

I'll probably tune in again this Sunday night for episode two of season four, and I am truly prepared to be pleasantly surprised, but if things don't improve rapidly, I'm done with Downton.

Living Large in Lambertville New Jersey at El Tule Restaurant

For a town of around 4,000 souls, Lambertville, New Jersey has a lot of restaurants, thirty six to be exact. From luncheonettes to four star palaces of gustatory delight, Lambertville has it all, and as you can imagine, the competition is fierce. Did I mention that Lambertville is where I live and that I like to eat out? Oh well, you get the picture.

In the twelve years that I have lived in Lambertville, what is now El Tule Mexican Peruvian Restaurant has had at least three incarnations, El Tule is just the latest, and for my money it is absolutely the best. It has quickly become a town institution and a destination for visiting foodies from New York and Philadelphia.

I've been going there almost since it opened about two years ago. Peruvian cuisine is a whole new world for me and at El Tule, where the food is great and the friendly staff even better, I get to explore it at leisure. In summer I eat outside, usually with a group of friends, in a cozy patio, under the protection of a big umbrella. At night there are twinkling lights and often a cool river breeze. But, indoors or out, summer or winter, there is a wonderful, informality and welcoming feeling projected by the family that owns and runs El Tule. They clearly love what they are doing. There is both a Mexican chef and a Peruvian chef. Both are excellent, but dine at El Tule one or two times and you will see that these two Latin cuisines are as different from each other as, let's say, French and Greek cooking. Learning about both cultures and cuisines at El Tule is like being invited into a family home for dinner. It's a marvelous experience.

I find it hypnotic. I'm fascinated by tacu tacu and ceviche and the use of unfamiliar and delicious varieties of corn, peppers and delicate herbs in the Peruvian dishes. I love the robust, more familiar flavors of the Mexican platters as well. They bring back wonderful memories of visits south of the border.

A couple of months ago I met a friend there on a Wednesday night for an early dinner. The place was packed as usual and there was a guy with a wildly professional looking camera walking around videotaping the place. What's up? I asked the owner. Turned out they were from Wildemedia TV News doing a segment for a feature of theirs called Latin Flare and guess what, they ended up interviewing me and my friend Karen, the foodie, for the segment. I'm in heaven. I finally got my big 15 minutes on YouTube.

Addicted to the Internet? Moi?

It's like any other addiction. You think you can quit anytime you want to and by the time you are in trouble, and can't quit, it's too late. I'm there. From the first time that I went online in 1995 with my Mosaic browser and saw what was out there, I was doomed. I saw the potential of the internet from the very first moment. This is big, I thought, as big as the Gutenberg Bible. At a time when print media was laughing all the way to the bank and internet advertising consisted of tiny little banner ads and a few blinking link rings, I knew, deep in my heart that this was going to change everything. Within a year I had my own website: this at a time when most people of my generation didn't even have an email address. I was hooked, but, of course, didn't know it. I posted on bulletin boards and learned a bit of HTML and met a lot of interesting people online in the moments I could spare from job, home, kids and life.

Once I retired and had the leisure to do it, I started blogging and hanging out more on social media sites that were fast replacing chat rooms and bulletin boards. It was all over when I discovered Facebook. I'm only grateful I never got into online gaming and Second Life. I would have been a goner.

Most recently, I have become enamored of Google+ and can't say enough good things about it. The one problem is, I go on just to check out my notifications and BAM I visit a few communities, post a couple of comments and look up and it is three hours later..... where did the time go? I've been down this road before.

Last year I got an iPhone which was like an alcoholic getting a hip flask..... the internet went with me wherever I went. I was one of those people you hate who takes out their phone on any pretext and starts looking things up or responding to texts.

So, I have set up a schedule for myself. I've got a timer on my laptop and I don't take my iPHone with me when I go out(well I TRY not to). I decided to keep my old landline and am using it for phone calls as much as I can. I have made a commitment to swim and go to the gym a couple of times a week and I hope all this brings me out of cyberspace and back into the real world.

I really have to get a handle on this.

Downton Abbey Musical Parody Camps it Up on YouTube

If you, like me, are a devoted Downtonista waiting with baited breath for Season 4 to begin airing on this side of the Atlantic, take heart. A wonderful Musical Parody and Season 4 sneak peek surfaced a couple of weeks ago on YouTube and is here to save the day.

Not only is it absolutely hilarious, it makes a true Downton Abby addict like me go into DT's (that's Downton Tremens to you social Downton Abby watchers). I'm still laughing and the laughing makes the waiting till January for season 4 just a bit easier to bear ( pass the kleenex please)

Colin Andrew Mochrie, of Whose LIne Is It Anyway? fame, is brilliant as Downton writer and creator, Julian Fellowes. He serves as a sort of narrator, holding the musical numbers together. My fave is a duet about tea and teabags sung by Carson and Mrs Hughes. I won't spoil your fun. Check out Vanity Fair's fabulous review and then watch the video.

There is lots I don't like about Henry Ford, but there is no denying he was a fascinating and complex character. This quote of his is one of my favorites and while Henry Ford and I don't agree on much ( he was a violent anit-Semite who hated labor unions and was happy to make a profit from war as well as peace) we do agree on this definition of getting old.

On the other hand, he was definitely a visionary. It's just that his visions were sometimes a little warped.

The Downside of Downton Abbey

The downside of Downton Abbey is only that season three is over. There is no other downside, unless you count the deaths of Lady Sybil and Matthew, both of whom are leaving the show for bigger and better and had to be written out of it. I don't know about you, but I was chomping at the bit for four months, furious that season three was airing in Britain last fall, while on this side of the Atlantic, Downton-addicts were having severe withdrawal symptoms waiting for the January broadcast date.

Yes, I resisted all the spoilers, didn't go near the blogs and facebook pages, and watched every episode-- sometimes more than once. I rejoiced over Mary and Matthew, cried for Tom and Sibyl and totally went into soap opera mode over Anna and Bates. I loved that Maggie Smith took her portrayal of " The Dowager" right over the top. It was a breathtaking ride and perhaps, because I had to wait so long for it, like the chocolate ice cream at my fourth birthday party, it was gone all too soon. Now I have a Downton Abbey hangover, and I do not like it one little bit.

So, now, on to season four. I think the wait will kill me this time. I am not the only one begging the powers that be at the BBC and PBS to NOT make us wait. Puhleeeeze.

There is a good case to be made for almost concurrent British and American broadcasts, but it seems there are potent financial reasons ( like ratings and increased post production costs) for keeping things as they are, so I am braced to accept the inevitable. But I'm going on record right now as one UN-happy camper about having to wait.

In fact, I am so annoyed by the prospect of having to wait four months after the UK for season four, that I just may forget all about Lady Mary, and Anna, and Bates and the whole bunch of them. It's not like I don't have other demands on my time.

Take that, PBS and BBC! Downton where?..... never heard of it. Don't keep me waiting too long. OK?

Fat Cats and New Years Resolutions

I don't do New Years Resolutions anymore-- too damned depressing. But I do do what I call New Years reflections. I look back briefly on the year just past and then think about, and write down, two or three goals for the coming year. I keep a diary-- have for years-- and always write down my New Years reflections in my diary. The writing down part is key-- at least for me, not least because it forms a record and a concrete reminder of where you have been and where you are going.

This year, after performing my annual reflective exercise, I looked back over more than a decade's worth of diary entries to see if there was a pattern in my New Years ruminations and there was. I noticed two important things-- to wit:

The first big surprise was that most of the goals I have set for myself over the years, I have achieved-- more than I thought before going back over my diaries. I really do worry less, spend more time with family and friends, procrastinate less, keep my house cleaner and my finances more organized and a whole bunch of other things too boring to mention here.

On virtually every goal list, every year, no matter what my weight or the state of my health, I included as a goal " losing weight, and getting more exercise" which is a goal I never seem to achieve-- at least not to my satisfaction.

So, now, just in time for my annual New Years review, I read that being a little overweight might not be a bad thing. It seems that a major study, involving more than 3 million people, has found that being moderately overweight ( I believe I definitely qualify for inclusion here) not only is not bad, but might actually statistically lower your chances of premature death. Hooray. Of course, the bad news is that the same study found that being significantly obese increased chances of premature death in a big way-- but then we already knew that, didn't we?

MY takeaway from this is to pat myself on the back for having managed to achieve so many of my life goals over the past decade and to give myself a break in terms of diet and exercise. Time to stop being so critical of myself. It is, after all, not how long you live, but how that counts. So Happy 2013 everybody and pass the popcorn. It's going to be an interesting show, for sure.

All over the internet Americans are mourning the passage of a cultural icon.... the Twinkie... that quintessentially American piece of psuedo- food that tasted like plastic and sugar mixed together and nourished nothing but the pocketbooks of its makers is gone forever.

The Twinkie, which sated the sweet tooths of at least three generations of American children, is now history. The company that made it is now out of business-- a victim of progress, hedge funds, labor unions or the crunchy granola crowd, depending on who you talk to

Hostess Brands, the company that made Twinkies, Ding Dongs, Wonder Bread and several other products of questionable nutritive value, announced plans to liquidate on Friday, after struggling with flagging sales for decades and bankruptcy since 2004.

The outpouring of online pain and grief has begun. Here's a small sample. Get out your hankies and prepare to weep.

Heads Up For Chocoholics

OK. I admit it. I am a hopeless chocoholic who rarely indulges the passion because of the sugar and fat and yes, darnit, the calories involved. So when I read about a new way of making chocolate healthier over at Gizmodo, I just had to spread the word.

If you are, like me, a total chocoholic who has been holding back, even in healthfood stores where they sell all that fair traded, dark chocolate that is supposed to be good for you, it's time to celebrate. You are going to want to go over to Gizmodo and read about the details there for yourself, but the gist is this:

According to a report in the Journal of Material Chemistry,scientists in the UK have taken up to half the fat out of chocolate by infusing it with orange and cranberry juice. The resulting chocolate bars are evidently delish if a bit fruity-- hey, I'll trade a slightly fruity taste for a bunch of calories any day.

Where do I sign up? Pass the chocolate bars please.

London Hatwalk Makes for Olympic Levity

Who says Brits are stodgy? Londoners are having fun during these Olympic games. First there were the classic London phonebooths all dressed up for the party, and now London has outdone itself with a project from the Mayor of London's office called Hatwalk.

Twenty one statues of Britain's important historical figures have new hats this morning, courtesy of some of London's most famous milliners. If you are close enough to get to London you can take the Hatwalk yourself in realtime. Here's the map.

Don't Frack Your Mother

I'm not sure what John Lennon would say about this one, but Yoko, Sean and Jimmy Fallon are all having a good time. And they are definitely getting the anti- fracking message across.

That said, there is something downright weird about Sean (a dead ringer for his late father) singing " don't frack my mother" while Yoko( who IS his mother) leaps around the stage wearing a fedora and holding a globe, gleefully chortling " don't frack me, don't frack me" As Ogden Nash once opined " Vice is nice, but incest is best."

Oh, what the frack-- watch the video. It's creepy but funny-- which makes it a perfect 21st Century protest song. Eat your heart out Pete Seeger.

Kitten Beats the Heat

It is so hot outside that my brain is frying. I am incapable of thinking, much less composing a blogpost. So finally, I googled " eating ice cream cones" just for fun, and this video was up there right on top. What could be cuter than a kitten eating an ice cream cone? What? Yes, a kitten with a milk mustache( you have to watch to the end of the video for it) is even cuter.

This gets a 10 on the cuteness index, but I can't help wondering how hot it is in that animal shelter and what those girls are doing feeding ice cream to kittens and, most of all, where is that kitten's Mama? Doesn't she deserve some ice cream too?

Never mind. It's too hot to ask questions. I have a pint of ice cream in the fridge. I think I'll have some. Maybe it will help me cool off:-)

The Artbox Project in action near the Tower of London.

The classic red British phone booth( oops I mean phone box) of Dr. Who and James Bond fame, was originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee. Though the cell phone took the iconic phone boxes out of service and off the streets some time ago, they live on in the imagination of Anglophiles everywhere.

Maybe that is why earlier this year, British Telecom decided to give some of Britain's most creative artists replicas to make art out of. just in time for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics. The BT Artbox Project is the result. Check out the photos below for an idea of what is scattered about the streets of London these days.

The Ivy League Hustle or Some Things Never Change

Nikki Muller,Princeton '05 is the unlikely queen of Rap these days. Her video, The Ivy League Hustle (I Went to Princeton, Bitch), has gone waaaay over the top on You Tube for good reason. It not only nails douchy Wharton grads, but more importantly, it also gets to the heart of an age old dilemma for smart girls looking for love, or at least a Saturday night date. I'm old enough to be Nikki's grandmother and I identify.

If you think that The Ivy League Hustle is something new, think again.. My mother told me forty years ago to "never let the boys know how smart you are." Other nuggets of the day included " if you want a boy to ask you out, smile, be pretty and let him do the talking. If he likes cars, talk about cars. Don't bore him with your interests." Every female who ever lived knows the rules of this game. The amazing thing to me is that it is still going on and men continue to fall into the trap

But then, we women are no better. We'll walk through fire for a man who tells us we are beautiful, and we'll walk away from a guy who treats us well and respects us--so go, figure.

Oh yes, and one other thing hasn't changed either. While the Wharton douchebag gets the cushy career path, the brainy girl gets fourteen dollars an hour. At least girls can go to law school these days and don't get asked on job interviews how fast they can type.

Never mind-- I won't bother my pretty little head about that. I'll just enjoy Nikki's video and the next generational version of the ages old dance of the sexes. If you haven't seen it yet, watch it and let me know what you think.

The Transit of Venus 2012

I don't know why the whole idea of the transit of Venus across the sun a few days ago fascinated me, but it did. I didn't necessarily want to watch it live ( not that I could have) but the idea of this, particular, once in a lifetime event has a rather mystical appeal for me. Transits of Venus are evidently extremely rare events and always occur in pairs. The last pair occurred on December 9, 1874 and December 6, 1882 and the next pair of transits will occur in December 2117, and in December 2125 respectively.

I think what really amazes me the most is that the internet made it possible for all the world to participate in the event via everything from real-time live streaming and blogging to Tweets and Facebook shares. At the time of the last transit pair 1874 &1882, receiving a telegram was a big deal and photos involved bulky equipment and glass plates. Thus only a lucky few viewed the transit. The general public would not have known or cared about such a rare celestial event. How lucky we are and how much has changed. The internet brings us together as a global family in so many ways. This is just one more very important way in which humankind is bound together as one. I wonder what the world will be like when the event repeats in 2117. We will either be one big happy family or back in the stone age again.

The time lapse video from NASA below, boils the entire seven hour transit down to a few awesome minutes. Think about this as you watch it: that little dark ball is the planet Venus, which is actually bigger than our Earth by a bit. Now think about the size and power of the sun. The energy is palpable and un-imaginably powerful.

Awe-inspiring is too small a word.
