You've Got Bags and They Aren't Gucci! The Battle of the Concealers: MAC vs. Minerals

Someone told me once "Girl, you've got bags and they aren't Gucci."

I've never had an issue with under-eye circles, or bags, or anything for that matter. Sure I could tell when I was tired but over time it progressively got worse. But I found my magic combo!

I really feel that everyone can use a little concealer- it helps diminish any dark circles, gives you a fresh look and real evens out your skin tone. Skin is thinner and more sensitive under your eyes so you need to take care of it- seriously someone could have mentioned that to me earlier.

I've worn bareMinerals forever, so naturally I started with their concealer. After much fuss and frustration I finally gave up. Their concealer moves after a few hours, setting into any fine lines. Sure it eliminates the dark circles but it slides down my face and fills my lines making them MORE apparent, like little off white spider webs.

No thanks.

My next move was to MAC. I don't wear MAC makeup on a regular basis but for my wedding I needed something heavy duty. Now I'm obsessed. I'm using the MAC Pro Longwear Concealer and it has amazing coverage, doesn't move from under my eyes and keeps my makeup looking fresh all the time. My MAC makeup guru mentioned it has 15 hours of wear which is great for those long days at work but unfortunately it DOES NOT have any SPF so I highly recommend using an eye cream first and layering it over. Before, I lightly layered bareMinerals concealer over my Aveda Green Science Eye Cream and I was really disappointed. It beaded up and created little concealer/eye cream balls under my eyes (my friend said she's heard of that happening). It was weird and honestly I'm still a little freaked out. Still use my Aveda, but now MAC is in the picture (literally).

My verdict? MAC wins in coverage, color matching, wear, and works great with other products/layering. I'm bummed about bareMinerals but I'll keep my eyes open (*wink*wink*) and see what else is out there.

No More Angry Ends

It's been too long (well certainly since I've posted on here) but mostly since my last haircut! It's been about 7 months, which is entirely too long to go between cuts even if you're growing it out. I got married to the love of my life and with that came the destruction of my hair. After the teasing, the curling, the curling, and more teasing my hair was in bad shape. Even my split ends had split ends (NOT CUTE!) and after that two weeks in the Hawaiian sun/ocean those ends turned into something resembling barbed wire. Today I got a haircut, and let me tell ya, nothing feels better than getting that nastiness chopped off!

My favorite part aside from my now silky and healthy locks was my blow dry. She had round brushes sticking out in every direction and I INSIST she does this every time. Why? Lot's of body, volume and smoothness. Generally my blow-dry will last 2 days with this method which means I get to sleep in. YAY!

For all you hairstylists or those who like to give yourself a nice blowout every once in a while, you should check out the Ibiza brush. It's incredibly light weight, cork handle and produces amazing results. Not a hairstylist? Next time you're at the salon, request a blow dry where they leave the brushes in- you won't have to style your hair for a few days!

Sunshine, My Only Sunshine: Why Sunscreen is a MUST!

A few days ago I read an article on Yahoo News about the effects of not protecting your skin from the sun. The image and article have stuck with me all week, so I figured I better share.

The article was about a 69-year-old retired truck driver and the aging effects of NOT wearing sunscreen, ever. Because only the left side of his face was exposed to the sun (driver's side), the physical differences between the right and left side of his face are remarkable.

UV rays can penetrate windows and light clothing, so wearing sunscreen at all times is VITAL for protection from the sun. The suns rays not only will burn, create discoloration or hyper pigmentation, or even cancer, but will drastically affect the collagen and elastin in our skin (think plumpness and ability to go back to the skins original state, or elasticity), and rapidly speed up aging.

I did my research and turns out the recommended SPF for sunscreen is 30. At this point, and SPF blocks 97% of UVB rays. If you are looking for the ultimate protection you can certainly purchase sunscreens with an SPF of 50+, but I read it's not essential for sun protection, plus it's significantly more expensive.

I started thinking, if my makeup is SPF 8-15, and I put a layer of SPF 30 on underneath will that increase my overall coverage to between 38-45? The answer is "Definitely Not" which I figured as much, but what I discovered was by combining two separate sun protectors, one product could potentially dilute the other, weakening both systems. So stick to your SPF 30 and you're good to go!

So whatever you do, please protect your gorgeous skin. If you never have, you need to right now. Go buy sunscreen and wear it EVERY DAY. Yes, if its pouring and storming and nasty outside, you should STILL be wearing it. Why? The sun may not be shining but those UVA (rays that are associated with aging) and UVB (rays that are associated with burning) rays are still coming through the clouds. So lather up, my friends. And protect your skin so you don't look like this guy (poor thing)!

Urban Obsessed

I have always been an Aveda believer/lover, and don't get me wrong I still love Aveda but lately I have been struggling with my skin. I recently went and got a facial (did you know you are supposed to get a facial every 4-6 weeks to maintain the radiance and gorgeousness of your skin? I didn't...) and basically found out my skin type has changed to slightly oily. I've been using the Tinted Moisturizer in Sweet Tea but I was starting to lose coverage and ended up looking too shiny (stress doesn't help). So I switched...

I walked in to Macy's the other day and was mesmerized by the sparkling makeup at Urban Decay. Basically I was sucked in by the girl that worked there and was convinced to try their makeup. I couldn't be happier.

Urban Decay Surreal Skin Cream-Powder Foundation Nirvana is the product I'm obsessed with now. The brush is cruelty free which I love. It's a cream to powder, so goes on easily and you end up with photo finish perfection on your face. It has an SPF of 8, so I'd still wear your regular sunscreen underneath it. My skin is SO soft and looks flawless...I can't remember the last time a makeup had that kind of effect on me. It has antioxidants to protect from environmental nasties, and Vitamins A & D to "nourish and protect." Also I bought the Urban Decay Baked Bronzer Toasted. I love the fact I can layer it, and plus it was really baked in an oven which I thought was pretty cool.

In conclusion, I'll never ever ever give up Aveda, but I think I have to save the tinted moisturizer for those drying winters :)

My New Fave

Ok I've got a new fave, and this time it's (surprisingly) not a hair product!

Lately I have been working a lot, which means I've been undergoing a lot of stress. I've never had any serious acne breakouts but I started noticing that my skin started to look congested. I was getting bumps on my forehead and it felt that it needed a good exfoliation, but the frustrating part was that I WAS exfoliating and not a lot had changed.

Skin care has never been my calling. I don't know very much about skin and for some reason I can't seem to get it right. Am I supposed to moisturize before I tone? Do I tone in the mornings only? I can never wrap my head around it, but this time I had to do something. I touch my face constantly and I use a lot of hair products and it started to show ( I was told hair spray can clog pores, uh oh), until I found heaven in a bottle. Seriously though. It feels like smooth silky velvet on my face.

The product is the Deep Cleansing Herbal Clay Masque by AVEDA. The use of clay is meant to pull out impurities from the skin and absorbs excess oils. Clay is drying and great for oily or normal skin, so I tend to use it only twice a week but AVEDA recommends this product for all skin types. Now I have clearer skin, it is moisturized and I feel that the oiliness of my skin is contained. The soft and smooth feeling on my skin is amazing, considering I just thought that soft skin was a lost cause due to aging. I love using it in the shower, especially because the steam from the shower opens up my pores and helps draw out the impurities.

The ingredients in the masque are key. The Deep Cleansing Herbal Clay Masque has English kaolin clay and bentonite which produce the drawing effects of the skins surface. Corn, coconut and herb derived emollients add moisture and red clover and echinacea soothe and calm the skin. So there's my secret. My skin is softer, radiant, and clear.

Great Hair on a Budget: Be A Hair Model

Got roots? Split ends getting you down? Don't have the money to spend on getting your hair done in a salon? Be a hair model!

Working in the salon, I have seen clients come in less and less frequently in order to stretch their hair color or cut out as long as possible before needing a touch up or trim. Generally this is due to money or timing issues, but now there is a way to get salon quality hair color and cuts for over half the price, and you can still go to your same salon if you like!

There are two ways that you can get great hair color or cuts at discount prices. One way is to check out the local beauty schools in your area. While students are getting their education and on their way to becoming licensed, they are put in a mock salon or spa setting taking regular clients while heavily supervised by educators with years of experience behind the chair. The prices are drastically cheaper than what you will find in a high end salon with good results. Keep in mind that these are students and they are still learning, so mistakes can happen. If you are very particular about your hair, this may not be the best option for you (unless you ask for a more advanced student which is a possibility). Try to look for higher end schools, like Paul Mitchell, Bumble and Bumble schools, or Aveda schools since are usually associated with great educational programs. These schools may offer spa services as well, so students can practice giving facials, massages, make up applications, etc which can be a less intimidating than hair services. Keep in mind these are students, so the chances of you getting a haircut in 45 minutes is slim, so keep your schedule open.

The next way to achieve great hair at low prices is to be a hair model. Generally when I say "hair model" people automatically think that they are going to have their picture taken and have to walk down some sort of run way. Not the case. You are just allowing a licensed professional to do your hair while they are going through an advanced education program at a high end salon. Here is how it works...

Once a student graduates from cosmetology school and receives their license, they can go work at a high end salon and receive more education before they are put on the floor and taking clients. The reason a salon is high end is because the skills of their employees are above and beyond other salons and constant education and perfection are key in this environment. This new employee will go through a variety of advanced classes since they already have the basics from school, whether it is for cutting, color, or both. For example a hair color program for one student at a high end salon can range from 8 weeks to 4 years, and each time they are taking "models" for specific objectives that they must complete (i.e. highlights, all over color, etc). The nice thing about having this professional do you hair is that the prices are at least half the price and there is less room for error than in a school. They are supervised by one of their mentors at the salon, and everything takes place at the salon usually in a quiet environment for learning. This is a great opportunity to check out a new salon in your area and to find a stylist that you like and can follow for years. Plus you can receive services at over half the price (if not free)!

Start calling local salons and see if they need hair models for their advanced training programs. Each student may be working on a different assignment so getting those highlights touched up or ends trimmed may take longer than you think, so I would recommend calling multiple salons. Also look on craigslist under beauty services where you will find many opportunities to be a hair model for what you need done. Just think, you are helping someone with their education and with beautiful results at such a cheap price!

Straight Talk About Flat Irons

With how many different kinds of flat irons there are, chosing the right one can be overwhelming! Should you buy one at your local drug store? The beauty supply store? Once deciding where you are going to buy your flat iron, which kind? Ceramic? Metal? Tourmaline? The options can spin you around in a whirlwind, so hopefully I can help ease your mind and answer some of the most common questions when it comes to buying your next straightener.

First off, when we are talking about ceramic or tourmaline flat irons we are talking about the plates that are directly in contact with your hair. Ceramic is one of the most common that is out on the market, and has been around for years. Ceramic plates have replaced metal, and are safer for your hair and distribute the heat evenly to produce a uniformly smooth section with less frizz. Within the ceramic family, there are mini flat irons which are used for shorter hair and bangs the traditional flat irons all with different settings and features, which really is a personal preference. Personally I feel that your flat iron should have a heat setting so you can personalize it to your specific hair type. If you have damage and breakage already from coloring, heat damage etc, you would want to use a lower heat setting to prevent any more damage. If you have thick, coarse hair, a higher heat setting may be appropriate. (See Pinned Up: How To Flat Iron Properly)

Tourmaline flat irons are another type of flat iron available to consumers. Tourmaline flat irons are actually a variety of ceramic flat irons, and is a mineral that is finely ground up and added to the ceramic before creating the plates of the straightener. The benefit of tourmaline flat irons is that it can cause less damage to you hair, but there really isn't a great difference between ceramic and tourmaline flat irons, so don't concern yourself with it too much. The difference really comes from the old metal flat irons versus ceramic, in which case ceramic will produce the best result and maintain the health of your hair. And never buy the Wet-To-Dry flat irons! Hair is not meant to have such direct heat on it while it is soaking wet. Your hair will sizzle and pop and that is in no way healthy!

To determine which flat iron you should purchase, generally the more expensive the device the better it will be. If you rarely flat iron your hair, then I wouldn't recommend spending your money on an overly expensive flat iron. Really you can purchase a great flat iron for under $50, but I would recommend doing so at a beauty supply store, not the drugstore (which is where you will find most the of the metal flat irons).

Here are some flat irons that I have had great results with. The Hai Ceramic Flat Iron is what I use on myself. The price is reasonable and I have never had a problem with it. It has a temperature setting and heats very quickly.

Hair Thieves

When I hear "grand theft" my first thoughts are of jewelry heists or bank robberies, you know the typical stuff...not hair extensions. A wave of hair extension thefts are sweeping the nation and these robbers are getting more money than you might think.

The NY Times published an article called Costly Hairstyle Is a Beauty Trend That Draws Thieves’ Notice a few weeks ago and I was completely shocked by what is happening to salons around the nation. These thieves are breaking into salons and taking their most valuable inventory: the finest hair extensions. These robbers have walked away with over $150,000 worth of extensions from Houston, $10,000 from San Diego, $85,000 from Missouri City,$10,000 from Dearborn, Michigan and then $60,000 from San Leandro here in the Bay Area. And they aren't even touching the cash register.

Hair extensions come in many different forms with the biggest difference is between human and synthetic hair. Synthetic can come in a variety of colors, from fantasy colors to natural and is generally cheaper than human hair but will melt if come into contact with a curling iron or flat iron. Human hair is the most sought out and the most expensive type of extension and comes in many different varieties and grades such as virgin hair, remy or double drawn. These thieves have been seeking out the Remy hair, which is where the strands of hair are placed in the same direction, with all the roots at one end which is easier to maintain and looks healthier for longer. These thieves know what they are doing!

So if your extensions were bought out of the trunk of some guys car for cheap, you may be getting the real thing!

Hair Envy: Gwen Stefani

Recently I did a posting on Victory Rolls which included a photo of Gwen Stefani, and with that I began to reflect upon her many looks. She has explored the map of style, from punky grunge back in her Tragic Kingdom days to the classy and clean look of today. With each of her styles, I finally realized what keeps bringing me back to Gwen: I simply have hair envy.

Her style has significantly changed, but what I love about her is that she can pull of many diverse looks which have turned her into a fashion and beauty icon. She can easily wear finger waves or walk the red carpet with her hair in classic curls. Her hair color is such a light platinum blonde that is her signature color, and it is beautiful on her. She doesn't change her color hardly ever, and it has a healthy shine that is beautiful.

Commonly seen sporting a 50's inspired 'do, Gwen Stefani has always had amazing hair. Through her experimental punk rock hair styles to a classic chic style, her hair is always beautiful and something to envy.

Blondorexia: The Epidemic

Blondorexia is epidemic sweeping the country. Every corner I turn I see fragile strands and broken ends, and it needs to stop. Not only is hair that is bleached white a bad look, but it's a disease. Please treat your hair with kindness!

For those who are unfamiliar with the term, blondorexia is: "A condition where someone has hair dyschromia; the inability to see the true color of their hair. They will often bleach it to the point where it becomes frizzy and breaks off, and still not be satisfied. This condition often goes hand in hand with Tanorexia". -The Urban Dictionary. Think Rock of Love girls....

Being blonde is a lot of fun, but can be damaging to your hair especially if you are going for a big change. If you have chocolate brown hair and are taking it light blonde, please do it slowly and gradually. If you do, your hair will remain healthy and strong and breakage will be reduced to a minimum. If you find that you style your hair, it is so important that you use a heat protectant and some form of leave-in conditioner. For a heat protectant, I like to use CHI Iron Guard Spray and a great leave-in conditioner especially designed to strengthen and repair is Kerastase Resistance Ciment Thermique which is a product I absolutely live by and have noticed amazing changes in the hair to take it from overly compromised hair to healthy and strong hair.

Blondes are always searching for the perfect blonde, adding highlights and lowlights, a different toner and always refining and retouching, deciding between warm tones or ashy ones. It is a constant battle to get the perfect blonde hair, but lets keep our Blondorexic ways down to a minimum. Your hair will thank you!

Hair For Graduation: Ideas That Work With A Cap and Gown

Graduations are happening left and right, and picking the right hair style can be difficult knowing whatever you do, you have to take that big cap into consideration. Here are a few ideas that will look stylish and chic even after you throw that cap into the air!

If you have short hair, I would recommend using a smaller curling iron and curling all of your hair (not just the hair that is sticking out from the cap). I would do this by creating a spiral curl, where you literally wrap your hair around the curling iron rather than clamping it down and rolling it up towards your head. Here is an example:

Spray each section with a heat protectant and hairspray before you curl, and more spray after you curl the section for an all day hold. It will give a nice soft curl without looking like you are ready for prom...again. I like this method for all lengths of hair. It gives a soft wave without looking like you just took your hair out of rollers. I like this technique for all lengths of hair and if you are planning on wearing your hair down for the big celebration.

For medium length and longer hairstyles, as all of my friends know I love the low side bun or ponytail. You can either curl your hair first or wear straight, but I would recommend cover the hair band with a piece of your own hair. I like he side bun/ponytail because people will be snapping photos of you all day long, and with the cap on your head, you may not want all of your hair pulled off of your head and your neck. One thing to consider is that photos will be taken of you from all angles, so plan your hairstyle accordingly. Even the sideways french braid video I posted under Braids Aren't For Kids can give you some ideas for your exciting day!

My advice is to play around with different options. Maybe instead of a side ponytail, just wear your hair swept to the side. Or if you want bigger curls, pick up sections and spray underneath (you can lightly backcomb for a bigger effect). Try to stay away from the perfectly curled hair or the intricate up-dos to avoid looking like you just walked out of prom (whether that was a 5+ years ago or 5 weeks ago).

Feather Extensions: Yay Or Nay?

Feather extensions have hit the beauty world in a fierce way, and definitely one of the biggest trends that is occuring right now. They are a great way to add a little extra sparkle to your look and a fun short-term change especially with summer just around the corner. It's safer than coloring your hair, and in some cases you can change the feathers to match your outfit, but moderation is key!!

Feather extensions can last from 2 weeks to several months. They can be placed in your hair by a crimping bead, which is a common way to place any extension into your hair. Depending on the designer, one extension can have up to four feathers (usually rooster feathers) on it, so if you want 5 extensions that can be a lot of plumage. Basically you treat the feather extension like your regular hair: you can curl it, blow dry it, flat iron, brush it, etc. If you would like your feather extension to stay a little longer, try not to wash your hair every day and brush lightly around the feather extension. Just like your hair, be aware of the amount of heat your are putting on it for a longer lasting healthy feather.

If extensions aren't your thing, I love the idea of clip in feather extensions. This is the same idea and looks just like a feather extension but instead of it being bonded into your hair, you just clip them in. The reason I like this idea is because you can match your feathers to your outfits, rather than having to plan your outfits around your extensions. I also love feather headbands, feather earrings and largers feather accessories for a nice change, which are available all over etsy.com

And just a reminder...yes everyone has feather extensions because they are super cute and really popular, but keep it under control. Too many times I have seen girls with 10+ feather extensions in their hair, and honestly you look like you're turning into a bird.

Vintage Hair: Finger Waves

Today, hairstyles often reflect classic styles and techniques, so here is a tribute to an elegant and traditional style for shorter hair that I have always loved: The Finger Wave.

Finger waves were a very popular style in the 1920's and 30's, and later into the 1950's by using pin curls to achieve the style rather than purely manipulating the hair into the signature "S" pattern. This was a style originally used to soften the harshness of a short bob, and was commonly seen on Hollywood stars (and still is), making finger waves popular and fashionable.

A finger wave is best described as a method of putting a soft "S" pattern into the hair with a comb, setting lotion (gel), and your fingers while creating ridges and waves while the hair is wet, letting it dry undisturbed to create a soft wave. Finger waves are difficult because you have to create the shape while directing the hair. This does take practice, but once you have it down everyone will be asking where you got your hair done! It is one of the most unique and beautiful looks, but remember this is best for short hair (still possible for longer hair and great for updos).

I really learned how to do this by watching many different people and taking the various techniques and creating my own. I bombarded myself with different videos, and made sure I understood the concept before jumping into it. Remember, there isn't a right or wrong way to do this if the end result is the same! So practice your technique, and if you have your own variation of the finger wave, that's great!

As usual, I have attached some videos that I really enjoyed. One is of a woman who is creating the look on herself. It really demonstrates the technique of doing this hairstyle on yourself. Some advice: keep your hair saturated at all times. This can be a messy process and will require a TON of gel, and it needs to be strong, sticky gel. I've used the L.A. Looks gel and it works pretty well. You can keep spraying your hair with water if it feels like it is getting too dry as you are putting in your shape, but ideally you do not want it to be too drippy (or I have just diluted the gel slightly and that works too). Also with this first video, after you part your hair, start on the side that is the heaviest, meaning the side with the most hair (i.e. if you part on the right, start on the left).

After you finish putting in the shape, you can either let it air dry and leave it as she does, or you can lightly run a comb through it for a softer look, whichever you prefer.

This second video is great because you can see her technique on very short hair. It is the same technique for all hairtypes and for longer hair, except if its longer then you have the direct the hair under your fingers and keep combing it in the direction you would like to take it. Sometimes the waves will break in two, and if that happens use more gel and spray lightly with water. Have fun, stick with it and I promise you will get it!

Braids Aren't For Kids

I am always searching for easy yet creative hairstyles that have a little more personality and style to them. Sure I like simplicity, but sometimes I feel that everyone is walking around with the same hairstyle, always searching for something that isn't so ordinary.

Lately I have been experimenting with braids and I love how simple this technique is, yet there are still so many different ways to wear them. First of all, braids do not always have to look juvenile (unless you are doing french braid pig tails, then, well, it's going to look childish). Try to do a sideways french braid, either pinning the pony tail part under, creating a side bun or just letting it be. One of the best tips I got from another stylist was "There aren't any rules. If you like it, let it be." So if it looks messy and you like it, wear it!

I found this great video that will show you how to do a variation of a french braid on yourself that can help you get some ideas and looks nice. With practice it will become easier, I promise!

Here are some more styles for inspiration, including videos on how to do a fishtail braid and a rope braid, which aren't very common but still something I love to see.

Second Day Hair Heaven

"Second day hair" is the absolute best. It's not so squeaky clean where a bobby pin will fall right out and it's not dirty enough to where you want to throw a hat on your head and hide from the general public in fear you may run into someone you know (and believe me, I always do). But how can we have "second day hair" everyday?

A dry shampoo or hair powder really is a great option, and not too many people utilize this product. It may be that they are scared of it, or unsure of how to use it. Either way it is one of my favorite products for mulitiple reasons.

First of all, a dry shampoo really does what it says. It is a dry product that you add to your hair when you don't want to wash, or want to stretch out your hairstyle another day. It will cleanse your hair, will absorb oils, eliminate any odor (but really, if your hair is smelly you really should wash it) maintain hair color longer because you are shampooing less, can add volume, bounce, will save your hair from heat damage because you aren't styling as much, and can give your hair texture. This is a great product if you need to add some grip to your hair and fabulous for big hair styles (all of my friends know I am deeply in love with big hair!) and updos.

This is not a replacement for washing your hair, it is just a product that will help stretch out that period between washes. The reason it is not a replacement is because it works a little differently than the shampoo you use in the shower with water. Regular shampoo works by removing the oils and products from your hair and is washed away by the water, while dry shampoos simply absord the oils, and can somewhat be brushed away as a temporary fix.

Dry shampoos can come in both powders and sprays. I really like the sprays because it is not messy and you can control it a little bit better since some of the powders have mulitple steps and are time consuming, so read the label before you purchase. I like to use products that don't have a step-by-step process to them, and really are quick and simple like these two products. These I love for absorbing oil and giving lift at the root (and take no time because you literally sprinkle it on and give your roots a rub and voila!) are

Hair Potion by Aveda or

Schwarzkopf Osis Dust It

They work great and can give your hair a tossled sexy look to it.

For color treated hair, I would recommend the Bumble and Bumble hair powders, because they come in white, blondish, red, black, and dark brown. This is a great way to temporarily blend roots and still do everything a dry shampoo does. Just beware of your pillow cases and running your fingers through your hair since it will come off.

So if you are in a rush, out camping, no access or are wanting to conserve water, or just plain lazy, try a dry shampoo or hair powder!

Today is Earth Day, and because I studied cosmetology at an Aveda Institute, I thought it was only fair that I dedicate this posting to a leader in sustainability in the beauty industry.

Green Is "In" This Earth Day

Green is "in" this Spring and it is appearing on the nails of everyone I see, from runway models to women walking up and down the streets. Muted greens and minty greens are all the rage, but if you have picked anything that remotely resembles a fashion magazine, then you know that already.

So let's move onto something even bigger and greener this Earth Day...

Eco-friendly shopping is becoming increasingly popular and people are becoming more environmentally aware of their actions and impact on our great green planet, and so are the designers. Designers are now creating clothing and accessories that are eco-friendly, chic and stylish. We have finally evolved from the earthy Birkenstocks and recycled Whole Foods bags to eco-friendly leather jackets made exclusively from plastic bottles and so much more.

NY Fashion Week of 2011 saw a lot of eco-friendly elements incorporated into the designs. Bodkin, Edun, Study By Tara St. James, and Organic by John Patrick were all featured in NYFW 2011, each with a goal of sustainability through impressive and sophisticated fashion.

Using vegetable-based dyes and organic cottons to promote sustainability, there is still a valid point to be made. No matter how fashionable or trendy it may be, anything that we wear that is claiming to be eco-friendly or green can not be seen as a trend. A trend comes and goes with each season, but sustainability means that our eco-friendly leather jacket can not go into the back of our closets just because that particular fashion statement is no longer trendy.

Vintage Hair: The Victory Roll

Hairstyles today are becoming increasingly unique. There are no rules, no right or wrong, but I have noticed that the most creative styles are really modern versions of a classic. Whether it be a double french twist or a high chignon, these are two very classic styles but modified. One style I am falling deeply in love with and am seeing everywhere is the Victory Roll, shown here on Betty Grable. This can easily be modified to your liking, but first you must have the foundation in order to start being creative.

The Victory Roll is a classic 1940's hairstyle that was incredibly popular and still is. The Victory Roll was in fact named after a plane maneuver used in WWII, and was a patriotic symbol of victory and used to honor the U.S. soldiers who fought. This particular hairstyle was also named the Victory Roll because of the obvious "V" shape that was created, and women who wore this style were often painted on the side of planes that fought in WWII as nose art, often to conjure fond memories of home and to bring a sense of peace and protection to the fighters.

The tools in the 1940's were different from the tools we have today. The blow dryer wasn't nearly what it is today, limited in power and not as common of household item, so hairstyles in the 1940's had to be created without its use. Also during this time pipe cleaners were used instead of bobby pins, since the metal needed for bobby pins was used for the war.

To achieve this style you will need a lot of bobby pins, a backcombing brush for smoothing, a teasing comb as pictured, a medium or strong hairspray (I like Bumble and Bumble Classic Hairspray or Control Force from Aveda), and a flower if desired. This style can be achieved with a regular comb, but for the best results I would recommend a teasing comb.

Start by parting your hair, either on the side or down the middle. Then create a section from the top of your head to behind the ear. You now should have a section on each side and then the back of your hair which I would clip back just to keep it out of the way. This video demonstrates the sectioning beautifully, and gives you a great idea, though I do have some suggestions...

Once you have your sections, take one side and begin to backcomb. I would recommend taking pieces at a time and teasing rather than doing the entire section all at once, concentrating mostly at the root area and at the back of the section, which will not show once it is pinned up (pun intended!). This way your style will have nice support and will stay all day, even over night. Hairspray each section since this style won't stand a chance if you are doing this on perfectly clean hair.

In the video she wraps the hair around her thumb and does this magical twist. I practiced this on myself and I just couldn't master it, so I have my own technique. Place one hand on the top of your head, sticking your index and middle finger out, pointing to the side you are working with. Wrap the hair around your fingers away from your face, firmly holding the roll you just created. Slide a few bobby pins in from the top, right where your fingers were pressed, now do it to the other side. If the roll looks messy, take the backcombing brush to help smooth out the front, and attempt it again.

Tip: If you are struggling getting a nice round roll, curl just the ends of your hair with a curling iron before teasing, going away from your face like how she doing. You just need to concentrate on the ends, and don't worry if it becomes brushed out, the bend you created will still remain. If you have a lot of layers this may be a harder hairstyle to achieve.

At this point you should have two beautiful Victory Rolls. Once you've mastered the technique, it is up to you where you want to take it. You can play with different partings, directions and accessories.

Make It Snappy: How To Blow Dry Your Hair In Less Time

For many, time seems to stand still when we blow dry our hair. It is a dull and tedious process which never seems to end. We have all been known to put off washing our hair to avoid blow drying, but I'm here to help make the blow dry less painful and a little faster.

Initially getting out of the shower, your hair should be dripping wet. This is where I would towel dry by squeezing any excess water out of the hair. It is better to squeeze and let the towel absorb the moisture rather than rubbing the towel fiercely in your hair. That forceful and brutal drying method can cause breakage and will rough up your hairs' cuticle and creating frizz which will need to be smoothed down (which isn't helping make this a fast process). Do this until your hair is no longer dripping and it feels like the towel has absorbed as much as possible (this really should only take a minute or two).

Next, I would apply a thermal heat protectant. I really like Ciment Thermique by Kerastase for overly compromised hair that needs a lot of strength (especially for highlighted or bleached hair) or Chroma Thermique by Kerastase for shine and it's very nice on color treated hair. Both are designed to be used with heat to protect and strengthen the hair, not as a styling product. I would concentrate on the ends with this product since the ends are usually the most damaged and in need of TLC.

So this next step is generally what most people skip and that is why a blow dry can take so long. Usually we jump right into the blow dry by slathering a bunch of products into the hair and grabbing our favorite brush attempting to create a style, overworking each section by trying to put a style into wet hair. At this point the hair is still very damp, and by jumping into the blow dry will only add more time to this process.

Now start with your blow dryer (it isn't necessary to leave the nozzle on at this point), and we will begin the rough dry, leaving the styling for later.

Using your fingers to comb through your hair, pull it away from your head while keeping the blow dryer pointing towards your ends and not pointing up at your roots, again keeping that cuticle smooth and preventing frizz, so you will need to elevate the blow dryer above your head. You will do this until it is 80% dry, meaning that it will be slightly damp to the touch or after turning the blow dryer off your hair will feel slightly cool. By rough drying with your finger tips, you will surely cut your blowdry time nearly in half!!!!
At this point I like to add styling products to the hair. Since most products are water soluble (meaning that they will break down and become diluted when combined with water) it is best to put them in when the hair isn't holding a lot of moisture, which will also prevent you from using too much product. Also, don't be afraid to use more than one product, since each product should have a different purpose such as a serum for frizz, a gel to hold the style and a spray or mousse for volume.

Now you can go ahead and start putting a shape into your hair, whether that be with a paddle brush for a straighter and smooth effect or a round brush for bend and movement on the ends while putting volume into the hair (the nozzle needs to be on your blow dryer at this point). I like working in smaller horseshoe sections starting at the nape working up the head. Blow dry each section until it is 100% dry, at this point you can use a flat iron or curling iron on your hair if needed (the hair has to be bone dry, and if any moisture is left it will be damaging) then apply a finishing product like hairspray or a product to define your ends, and you now have a beautiful blow dry in less time than before!!

Below I posted two videos that I think demonstrate great blow drying techniques. The first is for achieving volume quickly, and I really like her vent brush technique at the top and crown of her head. I would recommend using smaller sections and keeping the blow dry more controlled so you don't have to go back to a section and dry it again. It seems as though she has pretty thick hair and no matter how many tricks there are, thick hair will just take longer to blow dry no matter what!

As fashionable and trendy as shorter hairstyles may be, having long hair will never be out of style. There is a certain elegance and beauty to long hair, yet it seems that people are still trying to grow their hair out as long as humanly possible, but at what point do we say enough is enough?!

The other day I was on public transit here in San Francisco, and I saw a woman with hair that was roughly 6 inches shy of dragging on the ground. Her hair was wrapping around her legs, brushing against others and just an overall nuisance for herself and her neighbors, so why do that to yourself? With long hair like that, you have to understand when enough is enough. Long hair is beautiful if maintained and sure it can be pulled up (but if you find yourself pinning it up most of the time, you might as well cut it) but regular haircuts and deep conditionings are essential. If you do not trim your ends and eliminate that stringy mess on the ends, then you do not deserve to have long hair.

My theory is that if you can sit on your hair then it is too long. Reaching the mid back or even lower back can be beautiful but anything longer it starts to look unruly and too much. Keep in mind that when chosing a hairstyle or a particular length, think of the overall look. Sure long hair may be beautiful, but if you are 5'1", long hair past your hips may not be the most appropriate since it can shorten your overall look.

Long hair isn't always beautiful, but healthy hair is. As a friend of mine said, "Please don't be a hair farmer"!

Why You Should Take Biotin

Biotin is amazing, and every hair stylists' little secret. Biotin is a B-vitamin that is taken daily and helps increase the strength of your hair and nails, and also can improve the health of your skin. For most, hair will grow faster and stronger than before.

Biotin is produced naturally in the body, and by taking it daily the health of your hair, skin, and nails will improve. Whatever your body doesn't need it will be eliminated, so no need to worry about overdoing it (but please use common sense here and follow the recommended daily dose).

I have been taking Biotin daily for many months, and I have noticed a difference in the strength of my hair and how quickly it grows, which is great!! (Biotin is not easily absorbed through the hair or skin, so I would skip the Biotin shampoos). Biotin also metabolizes fat and amino acids which is necessary for cell growth, but it won't cure hair loss so don't expect miracles. It's worth a try, but please talk with your doctors and research it first.

Anyways I love Biotin. My hair is healthy and shiny and getting longer and thats what I want! Thank you Biotin!

Bang Bang

We've all stood in front of the mirror and stared at our bangs with the all-too familiar look of defeat. "Why can't they just do what they are supposed to?!" we ask ourselves. We've straightened them to death, veered dangerously close to giving ourselves the over-hair sprayed 80's bang, and then eventually we grab a few pins and pull them back, vowing to grow them out and to never cut them short again.

Well, help has arrived.

First of all, bangs are not for everyone. They require daily (yes, DAILY) styling, and frequent trips to the salon for a trim (and by salon I don't mean your bathroom mirror with your kitchen scissors trying to recall how the pros do it). Cowlicks and pesky curls happen, and whether you have the side swoop bang, the straight across bang or going for a piecey look, each requires the same foundation but with a slight variation depending on what you are going for.

Whether your hair is wet from freshly washing it or you are working with second (or third...fourth?!) day hair, we always need to start with our bangs. First, section out your bangs away from your hair either by using clips or in a quick ponytail. If your bangs aren't already wet, spray them with water until they are nice and damp, now apply a product if needed.

Now take a flat brush (paddle, vent etc.) and we are going to blow dry in 3 different directions no matter what style bangs you have: straight down, to the left, and to the right. Blow dry straight down for a few seconds then to the left, to the right, down, left, right, over and over again until they are dry, finishing in the direction you wear your bangs (down, to the left, to the right). This is called wrap drying, and this will surely eliminate any cowlicks you have within your bangs giving a smooth and styled bang, but you're not done yet.

Here's where the customizing begins. If you wear a straight across bang I would recommend using flat iron once your hair is completely dry (never to be used on slightly damp or wet hair). If you would like a slight bend in your bang, use a round brush considering that the smaller the brush the more bend you will have. After this is complete, add a touch of hairspray to keep them from going anywhere.

If you want a piecy bang, a touch of a pomade or cream with a slight hold (I like Light Elements Defining Whip from Aveda) to the ends for some texture.

Home Hair Color Isn't That "Nice N' Easy"

Bad hair happens all the time, but catastrophic hair usually comes out of a box. Coloring your hair at home can be convenient and easy on the wallet, but the aftermath is just the opposite.

I understand that getting your hair colored at a salon can be expensive, especially when you have to go in every 4-6 weeks to touch up your roots, but there are reasons that people go to salons to have their color done. First of all, its absolutely necessary if you are looking for a change. If you are brunette looking to go blonde or blonde looking to go dark, its imperitive that you see a professional. Sure its easy for a blonde to put box color on and have dark hair, it's just that you want to prevent it from going too dark (even if the box you picked out is a medium brown, it doesn't mean it will turn out that way). Also if your ends are dry, in need of a haircut, you swim a lot, or heavily style your hair this can change the composition of your hair making it more porous which could affect the outcome of your haircolor as well, which is why you really should see a pro. There are so many factors in coloring ones hair that it really isn't as simple as picking up a box and getting what you want.

But if you must...

Try to stick to the same brand that you have used before. There are so many chemicals jam packed into these boxes that allergies are more common than not. Also, stay within one shade of your hair color, do not turn to box color for a drastic change. If you have dark roots and blonde hair and you put a box color on your hair, the risk of having your roots being a different color as your ends is high. Once you have your color, buy two boxes. Its better to have too much than not enough, especially if your hair is thick or long, half colored hair is just not pretty. If you hair is short (too short to put in respectable pony tail) than one box will be fine.

If you do have a mishap, please do not go and buy more color and put it on your hair. There is a reason your color job didn't work out in the first place, for a reason that is unknown to you, and putting layers of color on your hair runs the risk of extreme damage. Believe me, it's worth seeing the trained professionals in the first place so they don't have to spend countless hours and a lot of your money fixing your mistake. They have years of experience and they do this for a living, you do not. If you are afraid that it won't turn out, it's not worth the risk.

So if you're not 14 and trying to do something funky and wild to your hair, hair color should really be left to the pros.
