This book was funny from the first page. I have never read a book with so much religion in it before, but that did not stop me from picking up this book. Just from reading the description on the back of the book, I knew that I had to read this. I love anything weddings, and a little bit of romance never hurts.
The book starts off with Bella's parents retiring from their wedding business. They have decided to give the business over to Bella, her first wedding is a boot scoot'n country wedding with cowboy boots as the centerpieces. There is only one problem, Bella is full blown Italian and her family has only ever done traditional weddings. But when Bella advertises that she is doing themed weddings she starts getting calls for some crazy weddings.
She meets DJ towards the beginning of the book when she hears a man talking about DJ on the phone, Bella thinks that this is a sign from God since she is looking for a deejay for the wedding she is planning. Get it, DJ is his name, she thinks he is a deejay. Let's just say that when DJ finds out that Bella wants him to be the DeeJay for the wedding, it turns into a very funny part of the book.
Bella's family is very close. They all live together, her Aunt, Uncle, Mom and Dad, and a couple siblings and are they funny! It reminds me of my family, there is always someone talking louder than someone else to be heard over everyone, and Holidays are even louder.
This is a must read for anyone who likes a little romance, and the love of family in a book.

After reading all the glowing reviews here I had high hopes for this book. Perhaps too high!
First the good. As other reviewers have commented the Rossi family form a cast of lively, quirky and very funny laugh-out-loud characters. They swoop you up in one big embrace and carry you along the story as you flip the pages.
So why the three stars? Firstly, I found the book a little difficult to get into. I've owned if for over a year and after three failed attempts finally managed to crack my way past page 50. Personally, I think this was because I found those first fifty a little too much backstory, introspection and introductions and not enough action.
*Possible semi spoiler*
Secondly, I think I've realised I like my romances to have a few more obstacles. While trying not to spoil anything for future readers, if the feature romance had had a little more conflict and tension it would have definitely had me a bit more engaged. It was all just a little too easy and left me wishing they'd had to fight a little bit harder.
However, this is a lovely lighthearted read if that it what you're looking for.

What do you suppose happens when the Bella of a passionate & noisy Italian clan meets a Texas cowboy? Mamma mia! Something's bound to be cooking, and I don't just mean the pizza and BBQ!
Twenty-nine and single, Bella Rossi has taken over the management of her family's wedding facility and bridal consulting business and immediately changes its focus from traditional to themed weddings. The only flaw is that it's less than two weeks before her first event, a Boot-Scootin' western wedding, and she still has to lasso a deejay (along with a few other minor details, such as music, food, and centerpieces). That seems to be a daunting task until she overhears a customer at her uncle's pizzeria talking to a deejay and convinces him to give her his number (the deejay's, not the customer's). After Dwayne (or Duh-wayne, as he pronounces it!) arrives and the initial meeting with her and the couple getting married takes an unexpected turn, Bella falls for him - literally, in a fainting heap at his feet.
As plans proceed and then the event itself occurs, Bella tries to find the balance between giving her all to prove her capability and relying on God to guide her steps. There are plenty of amusing - and horrifying! - mishaps along the way, as well as lots of family drama. Will Dwayne "head for the hills" or will he add a little flavor of his own to her family? And what will happen when her rowdy relatives meet Dwayne's own down-home, small-town family? This humorous and engaging tale adds sparks and gives new meaning to the term "melting pot". My favorite books from childhood have always been Milne's "The World of Pooh" and Kipling's "The Jungle Book". Over the years I have purchased many copies of each as presents. Both can be difficult to find in versions unaltered from the original. I have found this to be particularly true in the case of The Jungle Book. Some folks just don't seem to get that Kipling had a pretty good handle on what he was doing. One does not tamper with a Masterpiece.
This version is the real thing. It reads word for word the same as the tattered, 40-year-old copy that I first read when I was eight years old. Add illustrations by Robert Ingpen that faithfully capture the emotion of the story and you have a real winner. For those who appreciate The Jungle Book as it was BEFORE it was adulterated by Mr. Disney and friends, this is a very worthy effort.

Just read the previous review (about 'simplifying' the
language in Jungle Book). I am reading the ORIGINAL
text JB to my eight year old son (for over a week now),
and he's not once indicated that the language puzzles
him. He did ask me why Mowgli uses thee and thou
and wouldst while talking with the animals, but
accepted my explanation without demur.
Reminds me of the lines from an Elinor Wylie poem
"Our mutable tongue is like the sea
Curled wave and shattering thunder-fit;
Dangle in strings of sand shall he
Who smooths the ripples out of it."
Say it out loud, and feel what it does to your
mouth and face - that's what Kipling's prose

I found the book very useful and easy to read. There was just enough technical information in the text to be informative without being overwhelming. I did order the Kindle edition of the book and unfortunately many of the example photos were missing (some were included, but not all). So several of the examples in the book would refer to a picture that was missing. These missing picture are what lead me to rate the book a 4 star instead of 5.

What a beautiful book! The Single Mother's Guide to Raising Remarkable Boys is one of the finest new parenting books that I have seen in a while. The balanced and accurate summary of parenting research is a breath of fresh air. The advice is sensible and well grounded in both research and the experiences of parents. The affirmation of single mothers and the wonderful children they raise is overdue. An engaging writing style also makes the book a good read.
The Single Mother's Guide to Raising Remarkable Boys resonated with me both professionally and personally. Professionally, I have three advanced degrees in behavioral sciences and most of my research has involved parenting and child development. On a personal note, my own mother raised three boys and two girls as a single mother for many years. From both the professional and personal perspectives I must say that these authors got it right!
I can't think of any parent who wouldn't benefit from the view of parenthood presented here.

This is an excellent book and the title tells you exactly where the author excels. Written for busy, stressed-out single mothers who are trying to understand (?) and raise boys --- this book is hugely helpful.
After a long time when there didn't seem to be any books for us single moms --- now there is hope. I highly recommend this book to any woman who is raising sons, especially pre-adolescents or adolescents.

I've been wanting to read this book for quite a while and I was not disappointed. I bought it late on Sunday afternoon and thought I would read a few pages every night. I took a sneak peek at the first two pages. I finished the book on Monday afternoon. I was hooked!! Tracy's honesty and humour makes this a fabulous read. Easy and keeps you hooked. Tracy's writing style is fabulously refreshing.
Her story is captivating and honest. It is her story and she tells it well. It gave me insight to her as well as other young moms. I know this is her story only but I am sure that there are other young moms out there that experience much of the same. This gives me, the average reader, so much insight and a new found respect for every young mother, whatever their journey.
I would highly recommend this book. It's a good story. It is very well written. It is thought provoking. It is fabulous!

The exhileration, the exhaustion, and the pure love that's beyond anything you can imagine. Also love the description of preschool teachers vs office workers. As a teacher turned office worker, she got it spot on. Enjoy the book!

Single mother Catherine Jones and her young son (Jamie) are accompanying her mother (Hannah) on a trip to the kingdom of Boisdemer, which Hannah won. This is really the first time that Catherine has let loose and had some fun since she was duped by Jamie's father. She is enchanted by the man who is helping Jamie on the horse, during a horse-riding outing from the resort. She is intrigued by his looks as well as his demeanor. Though when she finds out he is a real life prince she is not so sure anything can come of the spark they seem to feel. Can Phillip convince her that she is meant to be a Princess and that he loves her son?
Hannah is drawn to the older handsome man (Alex) she sees across the room. She is not sure she ever felt a fluttering her stomach over a man before. But, she takes a chance, as she is on the vacation of a lifetime, and decides to do more than just a little sailing on his boat. While both of their feelings for each other grow ,Alex is also `digging a deeper hole for himself' you see he has forgotten one important thing in his dealing with Hannah. He has forgotten to tell her he is not really mild mannered Alex Cross, he is actually King Alexander.
The two fairy godmothers that are trying to get these two couples together definitely have their work cut out for them in this story.
The Prince and the Single Mom is the fantastic start of a series of stories by Ms. Ashbury featuring the modern day kingdom of Boisdemer and princes, kings, and a fairy godmother or two. For those who don't believe in fairy godmothers anymore you should read this story and it just might change your mind. Ms. Ashbury does a wonderful job with the romance between Kate and Prince Phillip, including how Jamie would be a strong part of any relationship and Phillip's acceptance of him could make or break a relationship. Additionally, Hanna and Alex's romance shows the reader that just because you are more than forty does not mean you are dead. The author did a great job in planning out the story so that both plot lines worked together and even fed off each other in places. She additionally made the reader see how important it is to tell the truth and even lies of omission may someday come back to bite you. I found The Prince and the Single Mom a fun contemporary romance.

I have read this book twice..once in April and again in August. Both times it spoke to me. First off, it is from the Christian life view perspective. So not having that perspective would probably make the book less helpful, although it might offer some insight into how that perspective can help.
As another reviewer noted, the book does end with the dream of a "hunky" man, and I agree with her criticism, that a "hunky" man is not the end goal. That said, I think the principle of a spiritually (emotionally healthy) "hunky" man or NO MAN AT ALL, it a great perspective. ie..don't settle. Don't make a mistake out of weakness.
What touched me and spoke to me most about this book was the kids. It IS about them. It is about being a "groovy" mom and having a rich life FOR THEM! (As well as for yourself.) And then some very practical insights into how that might look.
I agree, that her work life is very idealistic and not what the rest of us live and that part is hard to relate to. I do feel, when I read it, good for her, what a blessing for her, but that is NOT the life I live.
I have purchased and given this book to other single mom's. It has a positive, hope-filled message and the shot in the arm to be brave, be a woman of valor and dare to have a full life as a single mom.

After reading this book, I continued to struggle with the familiar nagging at my heart and the ache in my stomach, which speak more honestly to me about the realities of single motherhood. While I respect and appreciated many things that this author described about her own experience as a single mother, the heavy emphasis on religion, the reliance on a masculine form of divinity and the reference to the constant craving for a "hunky" male partner, particularly towards the end, left me feeling like this book was directed primarily at the white, high heeled, manicured, primarily Christian raised, middle class lifestyle type of mother. It spoke largely of this one woman's experience with the hopes that some of it might help other women, likely in similar circumstances. None of the descriptions of this book, nor the on line reviews identify the heavy extent to which the theme of religion, a male God, church, etc. are woven into the chapters. If something in this book resonates for white middle class women, great, the book is a success. But there remain thousands of women who do not fit in this group. Some of the serious issues that are often part of single mother hood and need real solutions, real acknowledgement, seem to be minimized or ignored. Dealing with abusive ex partners who remain involved in the children's lives, dealing with the emotional upheaval of depression, experiences of anxiety, trying to secure medical care for oneself and ones children, trying to find and get to therapy or good counselling, legal costs, not dating for years, not dating at all, having to manage house hold repairs, sick children, a full time job, shift work, all of these things alone....they just aren't dealt with adequately. The isolation of living in a smaller community, and not jetting off to other cities and countries, the lack of family resources and few reliable men who have time to mentor a son....they are realities for many many women. This book falls short for these women. The end of the book was disappointing...the reference to the fantasy of the dreamy man that is pined for and waited for, the end goal.......the hope for this dream to come true.....it promotes the message that a woman is not whole or enough without a man....that the goal is eventually to be with a man. This book seemed like an outpouring of one woman's story, and perhaps that was in itself therapeutic for the author. But for the other women out there who are also raising amazing children and get through the day with incredible integrity, courage and strength, women out there who don't have a personal assistant, don't jet off to big cities or other countries and do workshops or talks, don't have people stop them and tell them "you are beautiful",or "you know why we all love you", haven't dated for years, this book will feel alienating and out of touch with their reality and those "practical" challenges. Potential readers and purchasers of this book should at the very least be aware of this ahead of time.

Life sometimes does not turn out the way we expect it too. Sometimes, we are thrown for a loop with no where to turn. Who plans after vowing "I DO" and having a couple of "blessed events" to be alone raising children? Who plans on holding the hand of their child while their spouse is lowered into a grave? Who believes that of the 50% of marriages that end in divorce, theirs would be among the statistic?
No one expects the worse. But when the worse happens, it's great to have someone who has been there, show you the way. Not someone who gives you advice they overheard someone say or fish a random verse from the Bible, but someone who has walked the journey you yourself are now embarking.
In some circles, Angela Thomas had it all: a husband, four beautiful children, and a successful speaking and writing career. She wrote books encouraging women to seek the beauty and wrote prayers for the expectant mother and new mom. I can imagine she never imagined she'd write a book about herself titled, My Single Mom Life: Stories and Practical Lessons for Your Journey. What was made for her bad was certainly turned around for every reader's good.

Love it! Love it! Love it! Cudos to Cassandra for having the insight and courage to write this gem of a book. Every single mother should have a copy of this book. It touches on so many important issues that I don't know where to begin. You'll learn not to beat yourself up over things that are out of your control. You'll learn how to tune out negativity from others so that you can focus on living your best life. You'll also learn what to look for and what not to look for in a mate. It's a small book that packs a big punch.
What I like most about it, besides the practical information was that I felt like Cassandra was right here with me. I feel like she understood my pain and my hopes for the future.

This book has a lot of advise that can actually help any busy woman, not just a single mom, about believing in yourself and how to have that self respect you need. The encouraging parts would really help a newly single mom too, especially the one that says it's okay to grieve after a divorce. The advise is just very down to earth and candid, and I love the format. There's a wise saying and then an essay on it, so you could read one a day and focus on taking those small steps each day. I'd recomend this for any woman and especially for moms looking for a boost to their confidence.

I love this book. I have tried to read books on raising your child on your own but found them dull, preachy, not applicable, etc. But this book is wonderful, light hearted, humorous, inspiring and insightful. There are many ideas that I am going to use and I also found a closer bond in my faith. I am reassured and a little less worried after finishing this book. It's nice to know I am not alone and I am not the only one who thinks and worries over little things!

Single or gay mothers-whom Drexler dubs "maverick moms"-are "real" parents, in case anyone needed reminding. The families they create are "as real and as legitimate as any other." The author, an assistant professor of psychology in psychiatry at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, bases her book on an extensive research study she conducted. Though she's curiously cagey on numbers, she does reveal that she interviewed a variety of lesbian mothers, single mothers, sons of single moms and sons of two-mother families. The results of her survey serve as a refreshing antidote to critics who insist that family life today is on the verge of being atomized. In an upbeat but never preachy tone, Drexler retells anecdote after anecdote illustrating her point (namely, that female-headed households may be better for boys than households with men). The book is mostly narrative in structure, with bulleted points at the end of each chapter explaining what "maverick moms" do that makes them successful parents (they encourage their sons to participate in a wide variety of activities; they actively recruit male figures from their families and the community to be in their sons' lives; they model the behavior they want their sons to emulate, and set examples of strength and compassion; etc.). Drexler claims point blank that boys do not need fathers. This is a significant claim to make, and, if true, would have enormous consequences for the way we think about family. Therefore, it is imperative to investigate what her research actually says, and more importantly, what it does not and cannot say. Accordingly, there are two things wrong with Drexler's book - the methodology and the argument itself.
First, the methodology. These are the three most glaring errors in her methodology:
1) The control group for her study is made up of one person - herself (page 28). She sets herself up as a "one woman control group" to make comparisons to her group of 90 fatherless families. Anyone with even a cursory understanding of research methodology knows that this is completely unacceptable, and that the control group has to be as similar in size and attributes as possible to the group that is being investigated.
2) She uses a small, unrepresentative sample - 30 lesbian moms, 30 single moms by choice, and 30 single moms by circumstance - (page 27) to make inferences about the population as a whole. Again, a cursory understanding of statistical and research methods shows that unless you have a sufficiently large, random sample, you simply cannot make inferences about the whole population. But Drexler uses her research to claim that ALL boys do not need fathers. For more of her bias and elitist sample, see pages 24 and 25.
3) She does not measure outcomes using a well-tested instrument with which to determine how the children are doing across measures of child development and well-being. Instead, she relies on interviews with young children (primarily from the lesbian moms) to make the broad determination that these boys are "better off" without a father. The self-reporting of children is notoriously unreliable for the purposes of academic research.
Second, the argument itself. Three principle flaws in her argument:
1) Over the past 25 years, an enormous amount of social science research has shown that across measures of economic, educational, health, emotional, psychological, and behavioral well-being, children with involved fathers fare better, on average, than children without involved fathers. These two and a half decades of research cannot be overturned by one flawed, small-scale study that does not even measure outcomes over a long period of time.
2) If Drexler's research was reliable, the implication would be that when men get women pregnant, their children are actually better off if the father leaves. But Drexler also claims that male involvement is important for boys, and that boys will seek out this male involvement on their own. This means that fathers should not take responsibility for their own children, but should make sure that they make themselves available for someone else's children, who were presumably left behind by their father. This is illogical.
3) Based on her biased sample, Drexler's research tells us nothing about the vast majority of fatherless homes. The vast majority of fatherless homes are produced by divorce and out-of-wedlock childbirth, where, by circumstances beyond the single mother's control, she is left to raise her child on her own. They are often living in poverty. But, again, the majority of Drexler's small sample was of well-off women raising children fatherless, by choice, which would produce an entirely different environment for the children than the vast majority of single mother households.
In conclusion, it is borderline fraudulent for Drexler to claim that her research is a reliable tool to infer that boys do not need fathers. Her research method and her argument are deeply flawed and need to be addressed in front of a national audience that has been exposed to her faulty publication. We need to send the message to boys that they need to be involved, responsible, and committed fathers and that girls need to value and uphold the importance of the future fathers of their children for the sake of their children's well being.
I would encourage all to read Father Facts by the National Fatherhood Initiative, Fatherless America by David Blankenhorn, and Fatherneed by Kyle Pruett for the TRUTH!

Drexler seems to forget that anecdotal evidence cannot be used to justify the type of claims she's making in this book, which is riddled with biased sample and hasty generalization fallacies. Drexler makes sweeping statements about the efficacy of single mother parenting without even attempting to clearly define her definition, let alone establish a double blind study or make any other attempt whatsoever to compensate for her bias. Instead, she relies on anecdotal evidence supplied by individuals who were clearly selected based on whether or not their stories support her conclusions.

I'm more stunned by the reviews than by the book. I think the book has interesting information and a valid perspective that isn't heard often.
But to understand that, one needs to actually read the book and also to understand sociological methods of study - studying human experience is not like studying cause and effect in a lab. One also needs to hear and grasp the difference between studies on boys with fathers who have abandoned them - the studies most often cited and associated with stats about the negative effects of not having a father - and this study which is on boys who do not have a father in the picture and never have. In this way, this is new research.
The book doesn't, to me, say that men are not necessary to boys - in fact the author spends a great deal of the book talking about how boys who do not have fathers get access to (and are encouraged by their "maverick moms" to get access to) men and male role models. She finds this to be of benefit for the boys.
She does also say that, based on this research, she sees boys being raised in this specific circumstance (boys without fathers who have abandoned them and who are being raised by a mom or moms) doing very well and developing in a very balanced and healthy manner.
My issue with the book is two-fold. I'd like to see more research and a follow-up with the subjects of her research - I think that would lend itself to a stronger work.

Sandeep Gupta -- as befits the popular image of a writer -- has held a variety of jobs, the most recent being the ghost blogger for a multinational bank's vice president. He lives in Amsterdam, studies and practices tai chi for stress relief, and as a budding novelist, is trying to goad his procrastinating publisher into getting his first novel printed and distributed.

While pondering the direction his life should take--corporate drone or starving artist--he returns to India to renew his work visa, meets a very interesting woman named Shruti, heeds his tai chi teacher's words of wisdom, impersonates his friend Pritam Mitra at a business conference, and falls in love.

HMH Bank employee Simon van der Wiel provides a cyber-narrative in his Simple Simon blog of the goings-on during Sandeep's imposture of his friend. Sandeep-as-Pritam improvises a presentation based on the Bhagavad Gita at the conference and finds himself on the rise as an innovative thinker on economics. As if that weren't enough, Sandeep acquires a cyber-stalker.

Sandeep is a very busy man.

The bons mots fly thick and fast through the pages of this contemporary novel, which pokes loving fun at corporate culture, techno-gadgets in daily life, romance, traditional Indian customs, geekdom, and a handful of other themes. The wonder of it all is that Sengupta keeps all the threads interwoven in a densely attractive word tapestry which is also very, very funny. Logophiles will be snickering at all the literary in-jokes as well as the pop-culture references.

At 681 pages, The Best Seller is certainly a hefty tome, but the book's size should in no way intimidate the interested reader. Sengupta has delivered a finely tempered blade of a book that takes artful slices at several pretentious elements of modern life. In its scope and length, it's reminiscent of Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash, another excellent novel. The Best Seller deserves the attention to match its title. --ForeWord Clarion Review

This book is like a morning star alone and ungrouped, amidst a milieu of stars and asteroids in the literary firmament, shimmering in ancient wisdom and philosophy of life and emphasising the ways and nuances of interpreting our own lives and making our own choices as we go along. It also makes a case for understanding the subtle distinction between truth-like and the Truth and carefully choosing the latter.
Seldom has any author attempted to reconcile the complex ambitions of human minds by putting on conference a psychiatrist, a political science student, an information technology worker, a young multi-faceted hero who expresses his love both through Shakespearean drama and Tai-Chi rigour and finally an aging saintly professor who passes to his protégés his unbounded faith and erudition from ancient Indian canons viz. the Gita, the Upanishads and the Mahabharata. Also what is interesting are the multi-cultural discussions around the self-contradicting India and the self- introspective
Dutchland.
The presentation style is contemporary and unique through the usage of chat transcripts and blogs which are the modern mantra of corporate and social networking. Every page of this book has got a thrill, many wonderful alliterations and expressions of humour, mostly leaning on sarcasm whose poignancy leaves our mind badly bruised and scarred... and makes us reflect those very shades on our own personal lives. Makes us feel like a journey ... a real one towards truth.
Choosing characters, from the sphere of Information Technology, who are working in large global corporations with vaunted identities, makes it a very interesting read for the real IT professionals. This book is highly recommended for all multi-national knowledge workers at varying echelons of the corporate ladder who wish to take a fresh perspective of their lives and start preparing for avoiding their premature career burnouts. Also in some cases this journey may help them to turn their attention towards other vocations in life which could even foliate priceless enjoyment.
Lastly, it discusses the age old dilemma in relationships between a man and a woman ... and without attempting to draw any conclusion just leaves it to one's own faculty, maturity and mental frequency to decide on how and what can create the resonance of two minds.
My gratitude goes to the author for turning this honest book out from his own sweatshop each page finely calligraphed in crimson.

Yet another masterpiece by a young and talented author.
Set in Amsterdam and spanning across the continents to California and India , the novel reveals the brilliant command the author has on the English language, martial arts , the economy as well as the great Hindu philosophical text- the Geeta.
He manages to weave the skeins of these individual entities into a rich tapestry, shimmering with his own wicked sense of humor apparent in every page.
Though a weighty book,the narrative is never boring and conveyed through seamless transition between prose,delightful repartee, mails and Simons blog.
The darker undercurrents deal with being a struggling author and trying not to compromise ethics while being sucked into the vortex of rejection slips.
People working in the IT industry will identify with the all too familiar shenanigans of everyday corporate life.
The erotomania of Amrita, the simple philosophy of Simon as well as rotund intrusiveness of manager Madhu with her self proclaimed knowledge of psychiatry is entertaining.
These are interspersed with philosphical discussions with the real psychiatrist Dr Roy and his analysis of people and their personalities, these compelling conversations often being held in interesting locations.
The reverence that the author and by extension Sandeep the protagonist, has for the "Professor" is apparent in the exchanges with him over the telephone as well as in person.
Running through the core is the stimulating banter between Sandeep and spirited Shruti while their love blossoms over text messages and haikus. Every encounter is a pun-filled paradise peppered with playfulness and is a treat to savor.
Finally we have the authors own interpretation of the financial crisis as well as his own innovative solution.
A thoughtful and thought-provoking tome, refreshingly written and a riveting read.

As a photographer, I loved this book. As good as the photographs are, the writing is even better. Great stories about working as a Time photographer in the Mid East, growing up in Europe during WWII, and wonderful vignettes about Israeli leaders. Highly recommended.

David Rubinger has laid it out as he saw it and lived it. This is a VERY personal book with little if anything held back. From his youth to the present, Rubinger gives a verbal as well as photographic picture of himself and the Sate of Israel growing up, maturing and "getting on". From his time in the British army to the horrific death of a woman he cared for deeply, this book tells it all. It is easy reading yet compelling. I was carried into a very personal environment and felt as if I were at each event, meeting each person, taking part in each "adventure". David Rubinger's life appears to be a string of wonderful and not-so-wonderful experiences. And you are right there. The country comes alive through the eyes and life of this exceptional man. I have read it twice and have given it as gifts to friends. Oh, yes, I highly recommend this book!!

I am an advanced amateur photographer who has been photographing for almost fifty years. On reading "Israel Through My Lens" there is an immediate connection between Mr. Rubingers experiences and those of any serious photographer/photojournalist. Through his remembrances the reader not only relives the history of Israel and the Middle East in the 20th century but also the very simple joy of being a photographer, getting the good shot. This is a simple story of his life and his relationships that have led to a brilliant career as a photojournalist. I enjoyed the book because I am able to feel his excitement in getting the picture. Rubinger is not a 'god' of photography, he is simply a talented photographer who clearly describes for the rest of us the fun and excitement of photography and photojournalism. All this while telling a wonderful personal story and national history.

Anyone who wants a truly honest vision of the Arab-Israeli conflict should consider this excellent 580-page Reader, last updated in 2001. It is divided into four sections each of which contains important writings from both sides (sometimes three or more) of the question and goes back more than a century.

The first, for example, runs from 1882 through the end of the British Mandate and includes 69 pages of writings, from the Bilu Group Manifesto, excerpts of Theodore Herzl's Jewish State and a 1905 French journal piece by Negib Azouri to the 1915 letter of Sir Henry McMahon to Hussein the Sherif of Mecca, the Peel Commission report, the US Special Committee on Palestine and the Partition Plan of the UN General Assembly.

The Third section runs from the Camp David Accords to Madrid, including statements from various commissions, the Arab League Jordanian Crown Prince Al-Hassan Bin Talal, and Lebanon and Israel's 1983 truce agreement. Also included is the Hamas charter, the Palestine National Council political resolution and declaration of independence of 1988 and Iraqi speech of Saddam Hussein as well as a 1991 U.S. letter of assurance to the Palestinians.

The Israel-Arab Reader's last section includes many Arab documents on Oslo and runs through 2001 statements by the Palestinian negotiating team and former President Bill Clinton.

It is hard to argue against reading important original documents, and forming your own opinion. Once you do, you will see many of the factors that have shaped the current Middle East as well as international and U.S. policy. Alyssa A. Lappen

Almost the Perfect Reference, July 8, 2003

I will not spend a lot of time writing about how valuable a reference this is - the other reviewers on this site have already more than done it justice. Aside from the relative lack of material on early Zionism (also pointed out by one of the other reviewers), this book has most if not all of the relevant documents. I have only one major criticism (the reason I gave the book four stars instead of 5): the almost complete lack of information about the original sources. Apart from a one-liner preceding each document, no information is given regarding 1) the citation of the original work, including page numbers, where appropriate; 2) the language in which the original work was written; 3) if the work was not written in English, credit for the translation, the date thereof, etc. While these may not be of interest to the casual reader, to anyone doing research in the field, if only for a college paper, these details are critical. Furthermore, in an area as controversial as the Arab-Israeli conflict, the ability to trace documents back to the original and verify translations is everything.

For any scholar or interested party in the Middle East conflict, this collection of primary source material is one of the best around although it can always afford to be updated. It is subtly "pro-Israel" in choice and emphasis but the material is real and finely assembled. There are of course, minor inaccuracies (Erskine Childers is listed as an English writer rather than an Irish writer and his personal and background credentials are ignored, perhaps because his essay is uncomfortably pro-Palestinian for the editors.) Still, buy this book no matter where your sympathies lie. The editors deserve the reward for a fine effort and a wealth of material will be at your fingertips..

This is not so much a book as it is a divination tool. In fact, it is probably one of the easiest systems of divination to use- you simply concentrate on a "yes or no" question and thumb the pages until your intuition tells you to open it. There you will find your answer- and a little bit more.
Over the years I have used several divination systems (Tarot, I Ching, the Runes, and a couple more) but I was always curious about bibliomancy. It appears to be a form of "controlled synchronicity" as valid as any of the others- though limited to the degree of information that it can impart.
The book itself is a high quality artifact. You would swear that it is antique leather bound volume at first examination. It is a thick volume, but since it lacks page numbers, I cannot say exactly how thick. I know that people can't seem to keep their hands off of it, so it would probably make a great gift. An entertaining gesture might be to send it to a friend anonymously, to add a little mystery to their lives.

I have given this book to friends, and every single one of them loves it. The thing is, it's not just fun and insightful, AND like having your own fortune teller in the palm of your hand...but it's also very nicely made, with a beautiful, thick hardcover, with sensitively written words on aged-looking pages. The first time I picked the book up, I thought, "This is so nice!" It is not often you say that about just the book itself. It's a definite luxury item for your bookshelf, and your psyche. The author obviously put much care and thought into the words, the research, and the total look of this book, and that's very refreshing.

Awesome awesome book! Just what I've come to expect from Scott Nicholson.
I have this habit of trying to picture different scenarios in my head as I'm reading to see where an author is going with the storyline. Then I get my aha! I thought that was going to happen somewhere down the road.
I had no idea where Scott was going when I started this and I couldn't figure it out until I read it when I got to that point in the story. I hope Scott takes this as a complement when I say this book was so strange, but a great strange. I knew there was something going on with the food because Roby was fixated with food, but I never would have guessed what actually was behind the food. This was one of those, keep turning the page (or clicking the next button on my Kindle), don't put it down until you're done type of books.
This book starts out at the sitting for Jacob Ridgehorn and continues on through the viewing and the funeral. All of it revolving around Roby and the food and his thoughts on proper funeral procedure, which was actually kind of interesting. Tell me you haven't done it? Been in a somber situation, not able to believe the behavior of some who are there? He does give them leeway in his mind because they are grieving.
He sits through the bickering and manages to get everyone to eat the pie. What's in the pie? I can't tell you. You will never ever think of it yourself though.
I said this in my review of The Red Church, but I'll say it again. Scott Nicholson reminds me of some of the greats, Stephen King, Dean R Koontz, etc. This reminded me of some of Stephen King's shorter story. Not in the writing style, because that is all Scott's wonderful style, but in the suspense category. His stories are full of so much detail, you can easily picture it in your head, you can smell the food, see the congealed grease around the ham, the marshmallows on the sweet potato pie (I'm never eating pie at a funeral again, thank you very much Scott. :) ) This is just another great read from Scott Nicholson.

Burial to Follow is the kind of fascinating story I have come to expect from Scott Nicholson: intriguing, suspenseful plot, vivid details, and an insightful depiction of human motives, yearnings, and desires. The perfect blend of real and surreal elements, of the macabre and the humorous makes for a delightful read. Scott's stories and novels have a local, Southern flair (and if you are interested in delicious Southern food, this is the story for you) but speak to readers everywhere. The mixture of true sorrow, barely contained greed, and hypocrisy which is part of so many family funerals and inheritance battles rings true, no matter where you live. And what a surprise ending! But for that you have to read the story.

I got this for my friend who does tattoos and he LOVES it!!!! There are so many different designs in this book. Skulls, faries, hearts, arm band designs, animals, you name it, it's in there! The pictures are great quality as well.

first off, i bought this because I am a tattoo artist and I have used Tattoo Johnny's site for references at times as well as clients bringing me in images from that site. I wanted to add this book to my collection, seeing as how some of the designs on there are $10 for just an individual design. This book was under $10 when i bought it - so economically 3,000 designs for $10 instead of 1 design for $10 - just seems logical right.
well, i was hoping there would be some Ambigrams in here - but there aren't. Also hoping to see some Graffiti and Tribal - but there is no section dedicated to either genre. There are some tribal designs in the book, but not a tribal section. The categories as follows:
Angels & Demons/Animals/Armband, Lower Back, & Belly Designs/Japanese & Asian/Butterflies & Insects/Suns & Moons/Dragons/Fairies/Flowers/Sea Life/Patriotic & Military/Pinups/Religious & Spiritual/Skulls & Horror/Traditional/Zodiac.
The book is 351 pages long and 90% of the pics are full color.
I was hoping there would be a lil sampling of each genre in here - like ambigrams, lettering, biomech, graffiti, etc but there really isn't. There is a sampling of the categories i referenced above that the book has but these pics are pretty old school - i know some people who would get some of these, but i don't see a whole lot of ppl browsing thru this book like my others...
If i knew it was going to be like this, i would of bought a better book. I'm not totally disappointed with it, cuz I am going to use it... but there are better books out there. If Tattoo Johnny comes out with a sequel - i would hope it will have better art in it, plus the other stuff i mentioned - graffiti, biomech, etc..
so far the best book i have come across the is the tattoo encyclopedia - black cover, sells for about $50. best one - doesn't include graffiti either - but there's loads of stuff in it.
