I love this little green guy!

Yep! I'm alive! This blog has been on hiatus for quite some time now and if some of you (or even any of you) have wondered where I've been... it was because I somewhat became busy the past few weeks IRL. Not so much interesting happened save for one little detail.... I GOT MYSELF A SMARTPHONE... and here it is:

No, I'm not advertising the product. I'm just showing you the smartphone I bought for myself and this little devil is part of the reason why I haven't been much paying attention to the website. It is a great device. Fast, very responsive, and has a large bright screen. I'd give it a perfect score of 10 if not for the lackluster battery life of about 24 hours on average use. Anyway there's more... it is a GREAT gaming platform. With all the games available for the android system, it's a shame that gaming website hasn't given it an independent category like the iPhone. Oh well, that will change in time.

I will post a few more articles on android gaming for the next few days. A hint though... it's got an extensive list of available emulators for all systems except for the current gen consoles. And it's awesome. ;-)

StarCraft 2 SEA: Installing The Prepaid Version

Hell, its about time!

I noticed the lack of instructions on the internet on how people could play the prepaid version of StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty so I decided to make one to help my fellow gamers.

Step 1:

Go to http://www.battle.net and create an account. You will be automatically redirected to your current region. SEA for South East Asian countries and NA for other countries.

Step 2:

Download the game client through the Battle.net downloads section. Alternatively, SEA players can download the Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty Launcher here.

Step 3:

While downloading, you can add game time codes onto your SC2 Battle.net account by purchasing them thru IAHGames (paypal) or your nearest e-Loading dealer. In the Philippines, you can purchase them through any dealer of LoadCentral or by using your credits from LevelUpGames.

Prices for game codes are:

50 pesos - 3 days

100 pesos - 7 days

350 pesos - 30 days

Step 4:

After installation, the game client would probably download additional patches. Just wait a little longer and then you can hit play and enjoy the game!

AIKA GLOBAL: March in-game events!

In the whole month of March, get ready to defend your allies and defeat the deities of MAYHEM! At 3 forked Halperin, a party of GMs (3) will bring havoc to a nation where all Elters in sight will be killed by Mars, Diety of War with his 2 sons, Terror and Fear. Defeat the party of GMs(3) and get one day 2X Experience rate Modification for your nation.

For all Saturdays of March, Elters will be called upon to capture a thief and protect Lakia from an impending doom! An important item from the vault of treasuries has been stolen from the Lakia Congress’ Treasure Trove. A warning signal from the Intel squal shall be announced to Elters to give the whereabouts of the thief. The criminal should be captured and killed in order to get the prizes. Otherwise, monsters will be summoned in front of Regenshein’s gate.

Every Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays of March, a blood-spilling bustle will take place in the Elter Battle Grounds. Participants will be asked to go to Hero Square 15 minutes before the start of the event to get ready and wait for the GM’s instructions. Elters should battle for their life for 10 minutes. There should be just 1 last standing Elter in the battle grounds or else the round will be considered a draw.

This may be a jolly good holiday after all!

It wasn't fun when Polyphony Digital canceled Gran Turismo 5's release last November 2. Worse, they didn't give any specific date when it will be released. People have been speculating a 2011 release or to some of the more dramatic gamers... 2012! Anyway, rest assured that the greatest racing sim ever will be released (hopefully true this time) on November 24, 2010! Weee! I can't wait. I hope the Philippine release will be on the same date. Like a simultaneous worldwide release! Anyway, thanks Sony and Polyphony Digital! I'm sure this is gonna be another hit for the Playstation 3! A must-have!

Card Book & Card Collection

The Card book serves as a player’s card album. This is where one can start his or her card collection. Mercenary cards are stored here to be used for ranking the player in the game. The book displays the card’s information and there are also seasons for cards. This means some cards are more difficult to collect but will give you more points
for having it. The more cards, the higher your ranking is.

No Grinding

CardMon Hero brings Boundless Quests. Aside from the numerous interconnected maps, there is also a whole host of quests. No grinding required. CardMon Hero offers players different quests that will get you to the top in no time. The quests have their own unique twist and so leveling up is hardly a task.

Extensive Hunting Mode

CardMon Hero prides itself in its wide range of hunting modes. The hunting mode may be played by a party or a guild to face strong monsters that do not appear in normal hunting areas. There are special missions for each hunting mode in which mission points and rare items are given away to those who join. Difficulty levels are adjusted depending on the number of members in a party. A variety of PVP battles also await players.

Having Fun With StarCraft: Brood Wars!

It's 1998 all over again :)

I feel like time has stopped since I last played StarCraft: Brood Wars with my friends. It is one of my most vivid memories as a gamer and definitely one of my best experience as a PC gamer. I remember spending countless hours on single player skirmishes and sleepless days playing LAN games with my friends with this epic title from Blizzard. I know fully well that StarCraft 2 has been upon us for a few months now, but the first iteration of the series is just simple and uncomplicated. You just sit, fire it up, and enjoy. Also, the lack of offline multiplayer mode from StarCraft 2 is a bit of turn off, especially here in the Philippines where a lot of people doesn't have access to broadband internet connection.

I have a pretty powerful gaming rig on my home. Heck, I can play all the latest games with all the bells and whistles notched up to high with no problem. But strangely this 12 year old game can make it freeze in the middle of a game. Weird. But upon reading on some forums, I guess this is a common bug found when playing StarCraft 1 on a Windows 7 system with multi-core processing power. Well, needless to say the solution was simple and I thank VirtualBox for that! ^__^

Aika Global: 2 New Events This October!

Civilization V is Now Available

Firaxis has done it again with the release of its latest masterpiece, Civilization V. It is one of the most addicting games ever made for the PC platform. You'll literally "live" in front of your computer for days while playing this game; pausing only for the occasional toilet break and an hour of sleep (maybe less). Once I even experienced a sort of time-lapse because of this game. I knew I started on a Friday night but the next time I looked at the time, it was Sunday morning. O.o

Civilization V is a turn-based strategy game wherein your objective is to transform a small group of uncivilized barbarians to a large and powerful nation that would stand the test of time. You're the unquestionable ruler of a civilization. It's up to you to make decisions regarding politics, culture, religion, military, science, finance, and growth. Not to mention diplomacy (or the lack of it) with other civilizations. I admit there's a bit of a learning curve but once you get the basics down, the game will engage you in such a way that you will find it difficult to stop. You may think "I have to build this last tank" or "I have to race for that resource" and keep delaying hitting that quit button. ^_^

Firaxis has made a lot of graphical improvements within the game. Compared with the last versions of the game, this is the most beautiful Civilization game ever created. They also introduced the "hex grid" in this version allowing for a more strategic combat system. I could go on and on about everything good this game has to offer but I highly recommend you pick up a copy right now and see for yourself. It doesn't have any age limitation (anybody can play) or a high system requirement. Got at least Windows XP with 2Gb memory and a dedicated 256mb graphics card? You've got it covered.

Gameclub Philippines has released the list of the finalists for the Special Force World Championship 2010. The event will happen this Saturday, September 25 at the SM North Edsa mall.

Aika Global: Epic Wars Galore

Aika Global is the latest MMO to hit the Philippine's shores. Aika was developed by HanbitSoft Inc. and published by T3 Entertainment in cooperation with Redbana Philippines. The game's story revolves around the creations of the goddess Aika and the land that she made for them, Arcan. She created the Scinic (peace-loving creatures), Humans (balance of good and evil), Zereca (war-loving creatures), and Pran (fairy familiars that assist the Humans). Players can choose between 6 different classes as their avatar: The Warrior, Crusader, Sniper, Dual Gunner, Night Magician, and Priest.

The game offers a very unique battle feature in which a whopping 2000 players can simultaneously participate in a "nation war". Also, the Pran is your ally in all your quests. Your Pran will evolve into 4 different stages and will acquire skills and personalities in accordance in how you "treat" her. And like your avatar, it is also fully customizable. ^_^

The developers also designed the game to accomodate older hardware so that it will be available to all players. Here are the system requirements:

If you have a 4 year old PC at home, you'll still be able to install and enjoy the game. But I highly recommend that you upgrade your memory to 1Gb if you plan to participate on nation wars. If you just recently bought your computer, you'd be able to install and play the game with no problems.

StarCraft 2 Tips for Newbies

If you've played only a few single-player missions in the original StarCraft, there are a few basic things you need to know about the game.

Use Attack to move units

When you select your units and order them to Move, they'll go to the specified destination but ignore any enemy units they pass along the way. To avoid this suicidally single-minded behavior, select your units and use the Attack command to send them to the desired location. They'll reach their destination just as quickly; but if they run into an enemy ambush, they'll defend themselves.

Try the A.I

Don't dive into the ranked mode games--you'll get stomped, and you won't learn much from the experience. Instead, open your own Custom Game and click the Add A.I. button to add a CPU-controlled player. Set the difficulty level to Very Easy, and you'll have all the time in the world to learn the technology trees and to practice deploying your units.

Use the Help menu

StarCraft II's built-in Help menu (accessible from the in-game menu or by pressing F12) can give you a brief overview of each race's tech trees, units, and potential counterunits.

Pick a race and play with it for a while

Each of the playable races in StarCraft II is very, very different: Protoss units are expensive but hard to kill, Zerg units can swarm across the map with cheap, disposable units, and Terrans can control the map with imposing fortifications and powerful ranged weaponry. Try each of them, but then pick the one you like best and stick with it for a while--it's easier to learn how to play one race well than to master three of them at once.

Premium games for all the platforms cost money. Most of them charge $40 to $60 dollars while special edition software and/or collector's edition would set you back around $100+. That's a lot of money for a single game.

Some people would argue that the replay value of the game pays for itself, that its worth the investment considering you'd be enjoying it for countless hours. That may be true for games like Modern Warfare or StarCraft 2 where the multiplayer experience does give you unlimited replayability. But what about games with only a single player offering? Once you finish the game at its hardest level and unlocked all the hidden items and quests, you'd be wondering if the 15-hour experience was worth your money.

Then there's another argument that games purchased online are cheaper, for example Steam. I don't question that they are cheap. I'm actually a Steam user myself and I had purchased a few games using it. The problem is the connection speed of most gamers, especially here in the Philippines, is not what you may call fast. The widespread offering of ISPs here is a meager 2Mbps. It takes me almost 3 to 5 days of continuous download before I can play the 4Gb game I purchased online.

I know game publishers have to make money but it's also more important that they reach out to their target audience. Most gamers here in our country unfortunately resorts to piracy because that's the only way they can enjoy the popular games they like to play. That's revenue lost. Think about it, more people would buy legitimate games if it costs just a little bit lower. Word-of-mouth referrals is more effective than spending millions of dollars on marketing a product that a lot of people can't afford.
