The New Installed Tower Clock at BGC Taguig

We have just installed a 2-meter wide tower clock in one of the new buildings of Megaworld...the Uptown Parksuites 2 in BGC Taguig Metro Manila. The clock movement I used here is my own design called "two-wheel direct drive clock movement" meaning there are only two wheels inside... the center minute wheel that carries the minute hand and the hour wheel that carries the hour hand. Both wheels are being driven by two motors digitally controlled by a microcomputer chip and rate regulated using a quartz oscillator set at +1.44min/year using the state of the art Microset Timing Machine by Bryan Mumford. These kind of clock movement of mine is first in the Philippines and in the world.

The Lakan Tower Clock

The Lakan Tower Clock installed at PNPA SILANG is using the first Filipino idea ever made to a clock movement with only two wheels inside. The center minute wheel that carries the minute hand and the hour wheel that carries the hour hand. They are being driven by two separate motors controlled digitally by a quartz oscillator adjusted to oscillate at +1.44 min/year. During time setting of the hands...the clock is using a remote control to set both chime and time. The minute and hour hands can be adjusted independently to each other. It has an hourly Westminster melody and chime with special 5am Reveille Call and 10pm Taps inserts especially requested by the PNPAAAI Officials. After 10pm the clock goes silent until at 5am playing the Reveille Call. Backlighting is automatically controlled day and night. I think one of the most difficult job that a watchmaker can do is to find a replacement part but every watch parts stores here in Manila is saying "sorry no part available". Maybe it's hard for me to say "no" to my customer especially when at the corner of my mind there is something I can do to solve the problem. It's my more than 47 years of experience in watch repairing that I can duplicate a hard-to-find part using my skill with my lathe and other tools. Now you can see at the pictures how I solved the problem making a replacement sweep second pinion of an AP chronograph watch. As you can at the last picture the new replacement part is already at the center and passed the free wheeling test. I don't know how many watch technicians attempted to solve the problem before that Php1.7m worth of high end watch reached me. The problem is: the original defective cannon pinion got lost trying several technicians to find a replacement. They even tried to replaced the entire part with other caliber number but of course it will not fit. What we did through the help of the internet me and my son Alvin managed to find the right number of teeth and the dimension. As you can see the home made cannon pinion is already mounted in the movement. While the attempted replacement can be seen on the right side of the pictures with wrong number of teeth and an error of its dimension. The work is a success and the owner is very happy. The Making of Our First Tower Clock For Baguio City

On May 12, 2016 we went to Baguio City, the summer capital of the Philippines to visit the site of our first tower clock project in the City of Pines. Here you can see the big hole on the 4th floor of the under construction building that will become the new home of our clock. After spending the night at a transient house courtesy of our client, we immediately proceeded to the site and took some measurements and pictures and talked some important things with the owner about the clock. When we get back home, we started at once working for the clock and here it is... Finally, here is the clock now. Running and with LED back lighting seen at night. It has an automatic day and night switch for LED, recordable melody and chime with automatic mute switch at 11pm and resumes the following morning. It uses quartz oscillator that maintains +3 minutes per year. It also uses remote control to set the time and its melody, no need to climb up the building. Now we are awaiting from the owner the exact date to install it in his building.

TWO-DIAL ARCH CLOCK FOR SAN JOSE OCC. MINDORO

In April 13, 2015, it was the first time I drove my L300 inter islands with two large clock dials and its mechanisms and the control panel and full of tools and parts accessories as if I brought along my entire shop in Cavite all the way to Mindoro Occidental. A four-man team we travel the land and sea, watching my L300 on board the RORO every now and then.

The design of the clock is another first for me to do for the people of San Jose because I have made the chime and melody recordable. Meaning, if they don't like the previous melodies anymore they can change it whatever melodies they want in no time at all. The clock is also illuminated with LED controlled by a timer.

Arriving at the Port of Calapan City early in the morning we started to travel the land of Mindoro Oriental. And by looking at my GPS San Jose is at the edge of the southern most part of Mindoro Occ.

We arrived at San Jose safely, although there are a lot of experiences we encountered on the way as all of us are first timer to visit the province. Here is the project site, designed by the municipal's Architects and Engineers.

The following day, we immediately started the installations of two dial-clocks. We spent 2 days to complete the work.

Seen is the Mangyan statue being placed on top of my clock. Mangyan tribe is an ancient people first inhabitant of the Mindoro Island. We saw lot of them along the road and still in their "bahag".

In year 2000 I was doing many tests and experiments hoping that someday I may be able to make electronic circuit like this one. Learned that this small ladies watch caliber ETA 978.001 with 32,768hz quartz oscillator has plenty of semiconductors inside its IC that divide it 15 times and come up with one second divide it further and it has 0.05 or every 20 seconds intervals of motor pulses. One advantage is energy efficiency compared to 3-hands watch movement. Here in the second picture I have done it. I have designed this circuit to have motor pulses of every 30 seconds intervals using also a quartz oscillator as time base and running at +2 to 5 minutes per year. Watch for it how it will move big hands weighing approximately 130 kilos. Now my circuit is ready for action. The 14-meter wide dial is now getting its shape...

I am working now with my floral clock sized 14-meters in diameter to be installed in the northern part of the Philippines. Using my own design of clock movement with only two active parts to run as a clock- the hour and minute wheels only driven by two separate motors controlled digitally by microcontroller IC. THE SAN BARTOLOME ARCH CLOCK

It's been a long rest for us since we last installed the 2-meter wide tower clock of San Antonio Plaza Arcade in Mckinley Makati one year ago. Now, last May 2, 2014 another clock were installed in Malabon City at the newly built Arch of San Bartolome Parish Church as part of the renovation for their quadricentennial celebrations on May 17. It's another successful installation done by the Big Tic with the help of my artist Ka Rogie a deacon and Ka Mark a member of Scan. Please see the pictures, thank you. On April 30, 2014, the day when we started installing the clock we were not able to install the clock completely, only the dial with motor was installed and rescheduled the mounting of the master control panel because the cement is not dried enough to hold the panel. Just recently, we have finished installing the tower clock commissioned to us by the Ayala Land, Inc. The size is 2 meters in diameter with LED back lighting. But we have this story that my future clients should know, please read...

In March of 2012, I was contacted by an architect from the Ayala Land Inc. and requested a quotation for a 2-meter wide tower clock with back lighting. We went to their office and presented to them our design and its quote. We had some corrections suggested by them to suit their needs. But somehow the negotiation did not pushed through and silence there is between us until in February 2013 they emailed me again requesting for a renewed quotation for the said clock project. They also requested me to visit the site because the tower is already completed. Upon seeing the tower I was shocked... there is a clock installed at the tower but not working. There, they admitted they had committed a big mistake in entering contract with another company advertised in the internet who installed the clock. Please see the picture below.

This is the clock that these other company installed. It's not working and will never work because the hands are too heavy for the small clock mechanism they used. The construction of the hands as well as the clock's housing were not designed to counter the force of strong winds and or typhoons. And the most shocking discovery upon seeing the inside of the crippled clock, the user or the Ayala Land Inc. would have to climb up the tower every time they want to set the hands for time corrections! These brings me to a conclusion that this company who has an eye catching advertisement in the internet is not a tower clock maker.
Now, here is my replacement in the making, the Le Arsi Tower Clock by Big Tic. (Le Arsi comes from my name in reverse).

As you can see the markers and the rings are 1/4" embossed not stickers. And the dial is detachable in 4 pieces to give access in LED lights in future maintenance. The hands are reinforced with steel bars in scaffold to withstand even super typhoons. And most of all the clock has its master control with several switches to perform such as time corrections, setting the hands forward or backward, etc. This master control is located just below the tower accessible to maintenance people for easy operation with a small pilot minute hand at the back of the clock inside the tower to serve as convenient monitor during setting of the hands . The clock mechanism as well as the master control is 100% Filipino made. The over-all thickness of the clock is 5" compared to the crippled clock which is 12" thick.

This is a 2-meter wide tower clock installed now at a newly built mall in Bataan. We made the whole clock detachable in 3 pieces so that my L 300 can carry it.

We just assemble the 3-piece clock in its final destination- an easy work planned by Ka Rogie my artist.

Balanga City is a fast developing city in Bataan. We installed the clock in a newly built mall at the heart of the city. Another success installation of Big Tic Clockmaker.

The Luneta Masonic Clock made from China replaced by a Filipino-made Le Arsi Clock

This is the Luneta Masonic Clock with 3 dial faces imported from China installed in 1998. But because of so many attempts to fix it nobody here is skilled enough to bring back its working condition. Now, it has been renovated recently and the three clocks was reduced to only one facing Dr. Jose Rizal monument. The other two was replaced by the logo of the Masons.

Luckily, I was chosen by the contractor to build a replacement clock movement and this is 100% Filipino made clock by Le Arsi of Big Tic Clockmaker. And for that, one of my former student who is working now abroad as a watchmaker called the clock "pambansang orasan ng Pilipinas" because it is located at the kilometer zero of the country and facing our National hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

Now this is the Le Arsi clock made to replace the China-made Masonic Clock, proudly Philippine made!!
