The most accurate way in determining the extent of burn injury is by means of LUND AND BROWDER METHOD

First Aid

· Cool the area with running water for 20 minutes but avoid hypothermia (useful up to 3 hours after burn).

· Cold water compresses (changed frequently) useful for analgesia for localised burns.

· Do not apply ice or ice slush.

· For chemical and eye burns, irrigate with copious volumes of water.

· Plastic (cling) wrap useful after cooling (limits evaporation and heat loss).

Pain relief

· Paracetamol and codeine (PO) - 20-30 mg/kg paracetamol, 0.5-1 mg/kg codeine.

· Morphine (IV) - 0.1 mg/kg given in titrated boluses.

· Morphine (IM) - 0.2 mg/kg (useful if anticipated to only need a single dose).

Assessment

Airway and breathing

Assess for presence of stridor, hoarseness, black sputum or respiratory distress, singed nasal hairs or facial swelling.
Oropharyngeal burns and significant neck burns usually require immediate intubation even if the airway is not yet compromised; consult anaesthetics/ ICU early.
Immobilise cervical spine if associated trauma.

Circulation

Early hypovolaemia is rarely related to the burn injury and other sources of bleeding should be sought.
For circumferential burns, check for signs of circulatory obstruction and the need for an escharotomy; elevate the limb.
For electrical burns, monitor ECG continuously. If high voltage limb burn, early fasciotomy might be required.

Estimation of Surface Area

· Use a Burn diagram (LUND-BROWDER) to accurately calculate the area burnt, however do not count skin with isolated erythema (no blistering)

· As a rough measure, the child's palm represents about 1% of total body surface.

Management

Burns Requiring discussion with Burns Unit

· Partial thickness (superficial) burns with a surface area greater than 10%, except very superficial burns.

· All full thickness burns, except those that are extremely small.

· All burns to face, ears, eyes, hands, feet, genitalia, perineum or a major joint, even if less than 5-10%.

· Circumferential burns.

· Chemical burns.

· Electrical burns (including lightening). Extensive tissue damage can occur to underlying structures.

· Burns associated with significant fractures or other major injury.

· All inhalation burns.

· Burns in children under the age of 12 months.

· Small burns in patients with social problems, including children at risk.

Registration for new nurses shall require the following: duly accomplished Oath Form or Panunumpa ng Propesyonal, current Community Tax Certificate (cedula), 2 pieces passport size picture (colored with white background and complete name tag), 1 piece 1” x 1” picture (colored with white background and complete name tag), 2 sets of metered documentary stamps and 1 short brown envelope with name and profession and to pay the Initial Registration Fee of P600 and Annual Registration Fee of P450 for 2012-2015. Successful examinees should personally register and sign in the Roster of Registered Professionals.

The oathtaking ceremony of the successful examinees in the said examination in Manila as well as the previous ones who have not taken their Oath of Professional will be held before the Board on Monday and Tuesday, March 14 and 15, 2011, with morning (8:00 A.M.) and afternoon (1:00 P.M.) sessions at the SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City.

All must come in their white gala uniform, nurse’s cap, and white duty shoes.

BON-PNA Online Priority Number System provides successful NLE passers a guide on how to access the BoN-PNA Online Priority Number System (OPNS) — a new, digital system used to generate an Online Priority Number which is required among new nurses who wish to take their oath at SMX, Mall of Asia only. ( http://www.nurseoathtaking.net/ )

The Online Priority Number, the commission said, is required to avail of tickets. If you intend to have your Oathtaking in the province, there's no need to register.

Instructions

Initial registrants should come personally to the PRC Central Office or to the venue specified or to the nearest Regional Office to file his/her application for registration and to affix his/her signature in the registry book.

All Registration Certificates and PRC ID shall be claimed by the licensee personally at the Central Office or the Regional Office where the application for the same has been filed. MANILA, Philippines —The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announced yesterday that 29,711 out of 84,287 passed the Nurse Licensure Examination given by the Board of Nursing in the cities of Manila, Baguio, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Dagupan, Davao, Ilocos Sur, Iloilo, La Union, Legazpi, Lucena, Nueva Ecija, Pagadian, Pampanga, Tacloban, Tuguegarao and Zamboanga last December.

The results of examination of two examinees were withheld pending final determination of their liabilities under the rules and regulations governing licensure examination.

The members of the Board of Nursing are Carmencita M. Abaquin, Chairman; Leonila A. Faire, Betty F. Merritt, Perla G. Po, Marco Antonio C. Sto.Tomas, Yolanda C. Arugay and Amelia B. Rosales, Members.

Those who will register are required to bring the following: duly accomplished Oath Form or Panunumpa ng Propesyonal, current Community Tax Certificate (cedula), two passport size picture (colored with white background and complete name tag), one 1” x 1” picture (colored with white background and complete name tag), 2 sets of metered documentary stamps, and one short brown envelope with name and profession; and to pay the Initial Registration Fee of P600 and Annual Registration Fee of P450 for 2011-2014.
