How do you get the upgrade price? If you have a geniune XP or Vista license then you’re entitled to the discount price. If this is your first time buying a licensed Microsoft OS or are getting the full retail pack (DVD, manuals, etc), you need to pay the Full retail price.

How will I upgrade to Windows 7?

If you’re moving to Windows 7 from XP (Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional, or Windows XP Media Center Edition), you will need to perform a clean install. Meaning you have to backup all your necessary files and program data accordingly before installing the new OS. The upgrade does not do that for you so get to pop out your DVD blanks before inserting that installation disc.

If you’re moving from Vista, you will need to do a clean install ONLY if you’re installing a Windows 7 version that’s lower than it’s equivalent in Vista (say for example you’re installing Windows 7 Home Premium FROM Windows Vista Ultimate). If you’re installing an equivalent (Windows 7 Home Premium FROM Windows Vista Home Premium) or higher (Windows 7 Ultimate FROM Windows Vista Home Premium) then you just run the upgrade process.

Once you have some edition of Windows 7 installed, you will be able to upgrade to a “more premium” version of Windows 7 by purchasing an upgrade key to unlock additional features, just as with Vista. This is called Windows Anytime Upgrade (WAU). For example, you could start off with Windows Vista Home Premium, upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium, and then later choose to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional.

If you’re buying from the EU then you need to install it clean as there’s no upgrade path from Windows 7 E.

You can view more info on upgrading via Microsoft’s upgrade page.

I have x computers at home, does that mean I have to buy x number of licenses?

Yes and no. If you have 3 (yep, 3) PCs at home that you want to install Home Premium (generally, 90% of Windows users will only need Home Premium) then you can purchase the Home Premium Family pack at $149.99 (roughly Php 7,500). I understand that this is still very expensive for most people but for anyone looking for a legit license for multiple computers at home, this is a bargain .

Anyone still undecided on upgrading to Windows 7?

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Just like the search engine, expect the Chrome OS to be as simple as pie when it comes to usability. And since it’s a Google OS, expect to do most of your work online just like how things are done with the gOS (a name that is easily confused with the Google OS. It’s green OS actually ).

Being a netbook-targetting OS, the Chrome OS will run on both x86 AND ARM chips. You’ll note that Microsoft has decided not to port Windows 7 into an ARM version so with Windows 7 Starter out of the way, there’s a potential market for Google right there.

As an interesting note, Google Chrome OS is a separate project from the Android OS. Android is designed to work on many platforms like smartphones, netbooks etc, aiming for maximum compatibility while the Chrome OS is designed specifically for netbooks and people always on the tubes focusing on Speed, simplicity and security.

When is it coming? 2010 is the date posted by the Google team.

EDIT: CNN has tried to cover the news with some interesting quotes

The first is that Chrome OS will be available as “open-source” technology. That idea is part of what made Apple’s iPhone so successful.

LMAO

The result? A much faster build that had me staring at my desktop for a full thirty seconds after launch.

Earlier builds took their time launching Digsby, taking somewhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. After installing the latest build, it just zipped through the launch process leaving me to wonder if I was seeing things or not. Digsby booted up in less than five seconds

The list of other updates are as follows:

Performance: We’ve optimized performance from the ground up, reducing overall CPU usage by about 50%

Buddy List Search: Press Ctrl+F to easily search your buddy list or the web

Emoticons: Added four new emoticon packs to choose from

File Transfers: Improved the reliability of AIM, ICQ, and MSN file transfers

Conversations: Added an option for new IM windows to start hidden and blink the tray icon instead of popping up a window

New Infobox: The infobox now uses the same user interface control as the IM window (WebKit), making it much faster and more versatile

Twitter: Added Retweet support

MySpace: Added support for setting status on MySpace

Google Talk: Added support for the Invisible status on Gtalk

Kudos to the Digsby team for all their efforts.

As for the Mac and Linux version? Like Google Chrome, it’s moving steadily forward. As of now, the Windows build is pretty stable fast.

Now if the Digsby team is watching, when will you be putting IRC support?

Sure there’s tons of bug and problem fixes but there’s quite a few features that you’d really want to check out. Here’s a quick rundown.

7. TraceMonkey JavaScript engine

Firefox 3.5 is two times faster than 3.0. And ten times faster than 2.0. It’s Javascript engine that is.

A lot of websites implement javascript (AJAX sites for one like my favorite netvibes) which is why browsers focusing on usability prioritizes the on speed of it’s Javascript engine.

Tracemonkey’s innovative design is likely to push Chrome and Safari (and hopefully IE but I seriously doubt that) into more development which will reduce load time for the web, keeping everyone happy.

6. Reclaim closed window/tabs

Before, if you’ve had to recover an accidentally closed tab, you either had to sort through your history or rely on extensions like Tab Mix Plus. If you closed a Window however, then the only resort is the former.

Firefox 3.5 takes a from Google Chrome and implements a feature to restore your closed tabs/windows. I bet Ctrl + T would get much use once 3.5 rolls out.

5. Tab tearing

This UI innovation from Google Chrome is something that i really miss especially when organizing all those tabs. Sure it’s probably not going to benefit everyone but for the Mozzila team to add it into their build is really a nice touch. The video above details it’s functionality.

4. Keyword AwesomeBar filters

On paper, yes, Firefox 3’s awesome bar is useful because it automatically draws keywords from your bookmarks. history and tags in an effort to make browsing easier. In truth however, a lot of people hate it, even to the point of installing the old address bar plugin to get the former, simpler functionality back.

The 3.5 adds filters to avoid the clutter by adding special characters into the mix. Restrict a search by typing “pinoy *” for just your bookmarks with the words “pinoy” in them, or just your tagged “ptg” items with “ptg +”. Useful but we have yet to see what other people think about it.

3. Pron Private browsing mode

Internet Explorer 8 and Google Chrome already have their private browsing modes. It’s not really a must-have feature but it does get a lot of press for.. ehem, discrete browsing needs.

2. Geo-location

A lot of major sites have like google and yahoo provide localized content. Integrating geo-location into a browser adds another level of localization. Powered by Google’s Wi-Fi triangulation and simple IP address information, it’s pretty useful when you’re searching for something very local, like jobs or sales.

Of course, if there’s really nothing provided for your area then you’ll get a more general result but it’s still a worthwhile feature to look into.

1. Video tag support with with HTML 5

HTML 5 with video in an open-source format like Ogg Vorbis or Theora. The implementation is not like youtube where videos are embedded as flash objects, they are treated as part of the page making a seamless (sort of) melding of video and text.

It’s the first and a wonderful step towards the full implementation of HTML 5.

Phew. That was quite a list to research and write down. The best thing about it, the Mozilla team is expecting Firefox 3.5 to be released towards the end of June. Just in time for my birthday. YAY!

Now enough geekism. The DT200 (short for DataTraveler 200) also offers password protection to help secure important files.

If that 128GB is simply too much storage for you, the DT200 is also available in 32GB and 64GB capacities. They are built-to-order only, so no, you can’t buy this via CD-R King.

Read the press release here:

Kingston Technology First to Market with 128GB USB Flash Drive
Large Capacity, Password Protection on New DataTraveler 200
Fountain Valley, CA — June 15, 2009 — Kingston Technology Company, Inc., the independent world leader in memory products, today announced the release of the DataTraveler 200 (DT200), the world’s first 128GB USB Flash drive. The large capacity along with password protection gives users the flexibility to carry critical data with them at all times in a very small form factor.

The DataTraveler 200 is backed by a 5-year warranty. Kingston’s new flash drives are compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac but the password protection is Windows only.

Prices are $120 for the 32 GB (Php 5,800); $213 for the 64 GB (Php 10,300); $546 for the 128 GB (Php 26,400).

What would you do with a USB stick that big?

Firefox 3.5 is getting tab tearing too but if you want it right now for your browser or any of your Windows applications for that matter, you can install WindowTabs.

WindowTabs attaches a small tab to the top of your windows that you can drag and navigate ala Chrome tabs. The tabs can be navigated via clicking and Alt + Right Arrow and Alt + Left Arrow navigation.

The catch? WindowsTabs is free to try and available for purchase.

No, you won’t have nag screens or hideous popups. You’re just limited to 3 tabs per window which is definitely not bad.

Download WindowTabs

We’re committed to launching Windows 7 on time in Europe, so we need to address the legal realities in Europe, including the risk of large fines.

-Dave Heiner, Microsoft deputy general counsel

So what’s the issue?

Well, suppose you were building your new computer and you decide that you’ll be getting Windows 7 as it’s operating system. Since you got it from the retailer, you’ll be getting the default configuration (the one with no OS installed). The problem? Well, if you still haven’t figured it out, if your OS has no default browser, how are you going to install one which you need to download from the internet?

If you’ve gotten an installer before hand then you can pat yourself in the back for thinking ahead. But if you haven’t, what are you going to do?

Don’t panic. You can still install Firefox even if you don’t have a browser. How? By using the Windows Run Command.

Open the run (Windows key + R) command and type the following:

cmd
ftp
open releases.mozilla.org
anonymous
anonymous
cd pub
cd mozilla.org
cd firefox
cd releases
cd latest
cd win32
cd en-US
type image
lcd C:\
get "Firefox Setup 3.0.11.exe"
bye
exit

Note that this will get Firefox version 3.0.11. If you want to get a different version, just replace it with the version number you want although you need to know the exact number.

Do note that the tip above will only work for version of Windows 7 E shipping to the EU. Everyone else gets Internet Explorer 8 bundled with their Windows 7 installation.

Windows 7 is due to be released worldwide on 22 October.

100Mbps. Yes, it’s the same speed your Ethernet (not the Gigabit one) is connected.

As for price? It’s 10Mbps is Php3,995 while the 100Mbps is Php14,995.

The catch? It will be available for a VERY limited area as of the moment — Forbes Park and Serendra this June and Bel-Air Village and Urdaneta Village in July.

Now before you jump the gun and bash Globe for the slow roll out, calm down. Even with enough man power, Globe will take quite awhile to lay the framework for GPON to the rest of it’s subscriber base, not to mention it’s a costly investment with slow ROI (not everyone’s going to jump on the Hyper Speed boat).

Price-wise, the 10Mbps seems fairly priced. Our 4Mbps connection bills us at Php 2,995 so 2.5x the speed at another thousand bucks doesn’t seem hard on the pocket. As for the 100Mbps, well you decide if you can swallow the price on that one. I imagine Internet Cafes will jump on the offer even at that price.

With PLDT also set to offer it’s own line of similarly capped connection, things are looking great for the Philippine internet infrastructue DESPITE the economic crunch and the stupid bills being passed here and there. The great thing about it? HDTV, IPTV and all sorts of bandwidth-hungry services will soon be on our door steps. The only drawback I see, is price.

As with it’s earlier model, the My Book Studio Edition II uses two internal drives. You can configure them to RAID 0 for maximum storage or RAID 1 (or up to 5 if you like) for reliability.

The new My Book comes with four ports:

eSATA

FireWire 800

FireWire 400

USB 2.0

WD is kind enough to supply the cables with the package.

The My Book Studio Edition II drive comes in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB flavors. It uses WD’s GreenPower Technology which allows it to draw 30% less energy than standard WD drive systems and runs quietly because it doesn’t need/have a fan.

As for price, well the 4TB edition is $650 (Php 30,800).

Note that the 4TB is only supported by Vista, Windows 7 and OS X. Linux users need not worry about capacity support since you can manipulate your partitions as you will

The rest – Starter, Home Basic and Enterprise – will only be available to OEMs and business. Netbooks of course automatically get the Starter Edition without it’s 3-application limit.

Pricing has yet to be announced but Microsoft does confirm that anyone purchasing Vista Home Premium, Business and Ultimate starting July 1 gets a free upgrade to their Windows 7 equivalent. This is via the Windows 7 Technology Guarantee Program. A mouthful I know but basically, the saying that the more you pay, the more you get applies to Windows OS’s again.

The conditions to be eligible for free upgrade to Windows 7 from newly purchased Windows Vista systems are:

Windows Vista PCs preinstalled with qualifying software must be purchased by end users between Program Eligibility Period.

The computer must have a genuine Certificate of Authenticity (COA).

Only Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Ultimate editions are eligible for upgrading to Windows 7.

The Windows Vista product can only be upgraded to the associated edition of the upgrade software. For example, Windows Vista Home Premium K edition can only be upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium K edition, Windows Vista Ultimate can only be upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate. The only exception is Windows Vista Business SKU, which has to be upgrade to Windows 7 Professional SKU.Eligible Upgrade Path

Qualifying Product Version

Upgrade Software Version

Windows Vista Home Premium

Windows 7 Home Premium

Windows Vista Business

Windows 7 Professional

Windows Vista Ultimate

Windows 7 Ultimate

Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Starter, and Windows XP are excluded from the free Windows 7 upgrade eligibility.

Only language versions released in wave 0 to wave 4 of Windows 7 are eligible for upgrading to Windows 7.

A language version of the qualifying Windows Vista product can only be upgraded to the same language version of the Windows 7 upgrade software.

If an end user attempts to upgrade to an unsupported upgrade path, the end user may have to re-format the PC hard drive and/or may lose applications, files and settings available with the previous installed version of Windows. For example, the following upgrades are not allowed in the program :

Upgrades from Windows Vista Home Basic or Windows Vista Starter

Upgrades from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate

Upgrades from Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Ultimate

Not eligible for corporations or businesses. Those with multiple PCs who want to upgrade must have volume licensing agreement with Microsoft.

End-users who bought an eligible PC systems will receive Windows 7 upgrade disks once Windows 7 is released. The Windows 7 installation will require end-user activation. Compared with usual Windows XP to Windows Vista free Express Upgrade 6 months upgrade period, Windows 7 may have shorter period of 60 days or 90 days only.

Anyone interested in Windows 7 yet?

The grit against the 3-application limit is likely to be the cause for it’s removal. Personally though, I don’t see the reason for all the chagrin against it. Windows 7 Starter Edition is meant for netbooks and lower, not significantly more powerful machines. The 3-app limit is to prevent the user from consuming more resources than his/her computer can handle. Judging from reviews, the 3-app limit excludes the usual application a common user runs like the internet browser, messenger and office apps (like Word).

However, as it is with every limiting feature, the interwebs was all over it. The good part is that this puts Windows 7 on a better leverage for other low spec requirement OS meant for the mobile platform such as Google’s Android.

If you somehow manage to pick up a machine with Windows 7 Starter you’ll have to live with the following restrictions:

No Aero Glass effects

No ability to switch between users without logging off

Fewer personalization features (you won’t be able to change desktop backgrounds, sound schemes, or window colors)

No support for multiple monitors

No DVD playback support (although I imagine you’ll be able to add this with 3rd party software)

No Windows Media Center support

No support for streaming local media remotely over the internet

No domain support for business customers

XP Mode for running older programs is not included
