TV5 to launch CEO TV to compete to ABS-CBN's ANC

PLDT board approved a P750-million investment in its media assets to allow the group to become a multimedia service company. Prior to that, the telco said it was investing an additional P3.6 billion to make "its media assets more visible to the shareholders of PLDT."

Pangilinan targets to complete the transaction in the next few months in preparation for the launch of TV5's all-English news channel, the CEO TV.

He said BusinessWorld would be one of the sources of business content for the CEO TV. "We need more analysis of the economic development in the country," Pangilinan said.

Asked if BusinessWorld would be integrated with InterAksyon.com, Pangilinan said, "In terms of the actual content itself there would be integration. But in terms of actual formulation of the content we want it to be an independent media company."

Pangilinan said BusinessWorld may be expanded by publishing a weekend edition. "There's a probability that we can consider a weekend edition that summarizes the news of the week. Ako ang model ko is the Financial Times. It's written very well and the analysis is very good and the language of Financial Times is excellent," he said, referring to the British financial broadsheet.

Pangilinan said the PLDT group is also in talks with the owner of Philippine Star to increase its 20 percent stake in the newspaper. As for the PDI, no similar plan to increase the PLDT group's 18 percent stake is in the cards. "We are happy naman," he said.

ABS-CBN investing heavily in digital terrestrial television (DTT), cable TV

Media giant ABS-CBN Corp. has been investing heavily in digital terrestrial television (DTT) and cable TV, as it aims to bring clear TV viewing to millions of Filipinos.

Around 80% of households in the Philippines do not have cable TV, and majority belong to DE socioeconomic class, according to ABS-CBN DTV marketing head Miguel Mercado.

Of this number, Mercado noted only less than 52% of households receive only two channels of tolerable quality with the current analog TV transmission.

"People do not get clear reception on TV because of the buildings and billboards that create interference in the signal. They don't have a choice and they think it is because of their old TV sets. Digital terrestrial television will diminish the effect of development in the transmission of content and help the government fulfill its mandate of providing citizens access to information as it enables them to view more channels clearly," he said.

Mercado said in the past 6 years, ABS-CBN has invested heavily on infrastructure and test broadcast activities to ensure a smooth transition to DTT.

DTT, considered as the future of television, offers viewers digital clear picture and sound for all existing channels, and more content as each network can broadcast in more than one channel. DTT is seen to replace the existing analog broadcast transmission system in the country by 2015.

While cable TV provides clear picture and audio quality, Mercado noted only 20% of Filipino households have cable, which is why ABS-CBN is preparing for DTT.

"All the network’s efforts of producing world class programs are for naught if the content cannot be viewed and appreciated in its true value, if it even reaches the people at all. But the main reason we continue to innovate is to give the people a choice, an access to a wealth of information and entertainment that analog transmission simply cannot address very well,” he said.

Apart from cable TV and DTT, ABS-CBN is also credited for other innovations such as being the first network to broadcast in color in 1968 and the first to broadcast a locally-produced program and live event in high-definition in 2009.

ABS-CBN's video-streaming website iWantv! is also said to have ushered in the "Internet TV" era in the Philippines, wherein television content is distributed and consumed online.

Unbeaten Floyd Mayweather and Robert Guerrero made weight Friday for their Saturday showdown for Mayweather's World Boxing Council welterweight world title.

Mayweather, returning to the ring after a year's absence that included two months in jail, weighed in at 146 pounds while Guerrero weighed in on the limit of 147.

"I'm here to do what I do best," said Mayweather, who brings a record of 43-0 with 26 knockouts to the bout. "I always control the tempo and I'll execute my game plan."

Mayweather went to jail last June for domestic violence. Since his release eight months ago, he has been working to regain the fitness needed to defend his place atop the list of boxing's moneymakers.

Fellow American Guerrero, 31-1 with 18 knockouts and a 15-fight win streak dating to 2005, insisted again that he would hand Mayweather the first defeat of his career.

PBA Semifinals: Barangay Ginebra vs Talk N Text Live Streaming

Talk ‘N Text coach Norman Black said Game Two of their best-of-five Commissioner’s Cup semifinals series is like a win-or-go-home situation for them.

After absorbing a 23-point loss in the series opener of their best-of-five series versus Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, Black knows they need to play better than what they showed in Game One.

Game Two tips off at 6:15 p.m. at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum, with live broadcast over AKTV on IBC-13. The game will also be broadcast on a delayed basis starting 7:30 p.m. over TV5.

“We must play with a sense of urgency now that we’re down 1-0,” said the Tropang Texters coach.

Talk ‘N Text was totally outplayed last Friday by the Gin Kings and Black pointed to their poor shooting game as the main culprit to their downfall aside from allowing Ginebra to play its game.

“Matching Ginebra’s energy and intensity on defense will be the key,” Black said.

“Three-point shooting has been our strength this conference so we have to find a way to get better looks for our shooters.”

Ginebra shot above 50 percent (42-of-80) in Game One while Talk ‘N Text hit just 35 percent (29-of-82), including an awful 1-of-18 from the three-point zone.

LOPEZ: Lifting of Comelec Airtime Limits has no Impact to ABS-CBN

MANILA, Philippines – The Supreme Court decision stopping the implementation of the Commission on Elections' (Comelec) airtime limits on political advertisements has not affected ABS-CBN Corp.'s ad revenues, said the company's chairman.

Speaking in a press briefing after the company's stockholders' meeting on Tuesday, April 23, ABS-CBN Chairman Eugenio Lopez III said they have felt no impact from the lifting of the Comelec rule limiting to just 120 minutes each candidate's ads in all TV stations, and 180 minutes in all radio stations.

With the SC decision, Comelec's old interpretation of 120 minutes per TV station, and 180 minues per radio station stays.

“It doesn’t affect us because we limit the number of minutes per commercial we have per hour of broadcast. It may be good for other stations but since we have our limits, we are already full to begin with,” said Lopez.

According to ABS-CBN CFO Rolando Valdueza, ad ratings so far have been very strong and they are expecting good results for the first quarter of 2013.

“Based on analysts' comments, projections show revenues from political ads pointing to P1 billion,” said Valdueza

“The presidential campaign was of course much higher. Revenue during that campaign were over P3 billion,” he added. - Rappler.com

Angel Locsin Wins Best Actress Award at 2013 FAMAS Awards

61st FAMAS Awards - 2013 winners were announced Sunday night, April 21, 2013, at the AFP Theater.

Kapamilya star Angel Locsin got snubbed with at least a Best Actress nomination at the 10th Enpress Golden Screen Awards (2013) for the movie 'One More Try'. But here she is, winning Best Actress at the 2013 FAMAS Awards.

It's already Angel's 3rd award for the same film, proving that ENPRESS made a big mistake of not naming her as one of Best Actress nominees.

The movie 'El Presidente' meanwhile took home most of the trophies (it won ALL of its nominations actually) at the 61st FAMAS Awards, including the Best Actor award for its lead star ER Ejercito, his 2nd consecutive win at FAMAS. Last year, he won same for 'Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story'.

Is ER Ejercito already the best and most awarded actor these days, next to Coco Martin? Really?!?

Kapamilya FB Page confirms the return of Claudine Barretto

Claudine Barretto will return to her home network ABS-CBN, this was announced in the official Kapamilya Gold Facebook fan page. The fan page posted a photo of Barretto and captioned it with “The QUEEN returns to the HOME where she truly belongs and the HOME which never fails to make her feel that she is indeed one of the BRIGHTEST STAR (S) in the COUNTRY.”

Barretto and ABS-CBN had a falling out when she transferred to GMA, its rival network, in 2010. Being a homegrown talent, she was one of the most-prized actors of the network before she jumped ship to be a Kapuso talent. She was part of several Kapamilya television shows and played award-winning roles in movies produced by ABS-CBN’s cinema production arm, Star Cinema. Her last project with ABS-CBN was a special appearance with the defunct Kapamilya series “May Bukas Pa” in 2009.

Most Kapamilya fans did not like the idea that ABS-CBN re-acquired her as a talent. But the official page defended the network’s decision. ”Whatever happened in the past remains in the past. Let us all welcome her back wholeheartedly… Whatever it may, she will forever remain a true blooded Kapamilya,” the message said.

'Wowowillie' beats 'its Showtime' 'Eat Bulaga' on its pilot episode

More Filipinos watched the five-hour premiere of TV5’s noontime show “Wowowillie” compared to ABS-CBN’s “It’s Showtime” as it captured 27.9% audience share among nationwide urban viewers, seven points higher than the competition’s 20.9%, according to the national urban TV audience measurement (NuTAM) ARIANNA overnight data of Nielsen Media Research.

In total Luzon, Wowowillie’s 26.9% audience share scored a nine-point lead over It’s Showtime’s 17.7%. Moreover, in total Visayas, TV5’s first-ever daily noontime variety show toppled Eat Bulaga’s 20.8% audience share with a strong 29.1% audience share.

Lastly, Wowowillie captured viewers’ hearts in total Mindanao where its 33.9% audience share reigned supreme over both It’s Showtime’s 28.5% and Eat Bulaga’s 16.2%.

The much-anticipated return of Willie Revillame to daytime was held at such a great scale—gathering almost 100 performers in high-quality production numbers and exciting segments. At least 360 dancers were showcased in a 20-minute grand opening number—the biggest ever in recent television history. Star Cinema Produced 2012's Top 5 Highest Grossing Local Films

Star Cinema remains to be the undisputed leader in the local box office as it raked all TOP 5 highest grossing films for 2012! The film production arm of the country's largest broadcasting firm also set the record for producing the new top grossing local film of all time, SISTERAKAS, outselling 2011's best performer Praybeyt Benjamin, also a product of Star Cinema. The TOP 5 blockbuster movies alone raked in P1.2 billion in sales, even bigger with the combined sales of GMA Films, Regal Entertainment and Viva Films.

'Maria Mercedes' kumpirmadong eere ngayong 2013 sa ABS-CBN

Isang linggo ko na ngang itinitweet sa aking Twitter account na @byxspeaks na kumpirmadong eere this year ang Pinoy version ng isang hit international soap opera, marami ang nagtatanong kung ano ba ito. Dahil may basbas na ako na ibahagi ang impormasyong ito, it's time to reveal.

Ilang taon na ang nakaraan nang mapabalitang nakuha ng ABS-CBN ang rights ng 'Maria Mercedes' pero last year lalong umingay ang balitang ito nang lumabas ang usapan na eere ito last year pero yun nga hinde ito natuloy. Kumpirmadong eere ngayong taon ang Pinoy version nito sa ABS-CBN at sa katunayan nga ay may nagaganap ng auditions.

Ang 'Maria Mercedes' ay ang unang bahagi ng 'Maria' telenovela trilogy na sinundan ng 'Maria la del Barrio'& 'Marimar' na lahat ay pinagbidahan ni Thalia. 20 taon na ang lumipas mula ng una itong mapanood sa Mexico.

Ang soap opera na ito ay tungkol sa isang mahirap ngunit masipag at magandang dalagang si Maria Mercedes na nagbebenta ng bulaklak at sweepstakes tickets. Inabandona siya at ang kanyang mga kapatid ng kanyang ina habang lasenggero at palamuning baboy naman ang kanyang ama. Gaya ng maraming Mexiconovela siya ay iibig sa isang mayaman na lalake.

Gaya ng sabi ko nagsimula na ang auditions para sa ilang characters ng bagong Kapamilya teleserye na malapit ng umere. Sa ngayon, ang Pinoy production ay naghahanap ng mga mestiso at mestisang batang lalake at babae na may edad 8-12 taong gulang. Philippine national men’s football team coach Hans Michael Weiss said that the Azkals need to change their strategy if they want to overcome Singapore in the 2012 ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup semifinals.

“In general, the defensive approach is something that serves us at this moment but we have to change our style of play,” Weiss said. “We have to more and more look at the ball possession, play offensive.”

The Azkals have only conceded two goals so far, which came in a 2-1 loss to Thailand during the group stages. Since then, they did not allow their opponents to score in victories against Vietnam (1-0) and Myanmar (2-0) to help the squad propel to the semifinals.

The Azkals will meet Singapore in the second leg of their Suzuki Cup semifinal encounter on Wednesday at the Jalan Besar Stadium in the city-state.

Kris Aquino siniguradong magna-number 1 ang Sisterakas

STILL on the movie, masayang ibinalita ni Kris Aquino that she got a call from ABS-CBN president herself, Ms. Charo Santos-Concio, after previewing Sisterakas (na hindi pa tapos as of December 8, bagay that Kris was not supposed to divulge to the press).

Kris received a positive feedback not just from CSC but also from the other network bosses commending the cast and staff of the movie for a job well done. Forecast pa nga raw ni Ma’am Charo, Sisterakas would emerge top grosser in this year’s MMFF.

Kris then recounted na noong 2010, her entry Dalaw placed third in the overall gross receipts. The following year, her Segunda Mano ranked second. Kung susundin ang pattern, Kris stated with conviction na magna-number one ang Sisterakas.

She could only pin her hopes, dahil the movie is not solely funded by Star Cinema. Singkuwenta porsiyento ang invested ng film arm ng ABS-CBN, 25% ang sa Viva Films and the remaining 25% ay sina Kris, Ai Ai delas Alas, at Vice Ganda ang namuhunan.

This is the trend now in Hollywood where big stars either produce or co-produce their movies.

Charo Santos-Concio named as the new ABS-CBN CEO

ABS-CBN Corporation, the country’s leading and largest multimedia conglomerate, announced the appointment of Ma. Rosario “Charo” Santos-Concio as its newChief Executive Officer (CEO), effective January 1, 2013. The new position is in addition to her role as the company’s President and Chief Content Officer. Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III continues to be the Chairman of the Board of ABS-CBN.

As ABS-CBN President, Santos-Concio conceptualized strategies and solutions for the company’s growth, helping it achieve profit margins, record-high advertising revenues, and leadership in nationwide TV ratings.

It was also during Santos-Concio’s term that the network was named as one of the top 15 highest scoring companies and the only publicly listed media organization to garner a score for 90% or higher in the Institute of Corporate Directors’ 2008 Corporate Governance Scorecard.

Before being promoted to President in 2008, she served as ABS-CBN’s Head for Channel 2 in 2006, Executive Vice President in 1998, Senior Vice President of TV Production in 1996, Vice President of Production Operations in 1991, and Director for Programs in 1989. She joined ABS-CBN as Consultant in 1987.

As a programming executive and producer, she is credited with ABS-CBN’s leadership in the TV and movie market with top-rating programs and high-grossing films under her helm, such as “Esperanza,” “Pangako Sa ‘Yo,” and “May Bukas Pa,” the sitcom “Home Along Da Riles” that revived the King of Comedy Dolphy’s career, and Star Cinema’s quality movies that broke box-office records.

Santos-Concio is a recipient of many awards for her work and contribution to the film and broadcast industry, including Film Academy of the Philippines’ Manuel de Leon Award, Hall of Fame Awards for her long-running drama anthology “Maalaala Mo Kaya” from the Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA), PMPC Star and Anak TV Awards, CEO Communication Excellence in Organizations (CEO EXCEL) Awards, and CMO Awards’ Woman Super Achiever Award.

She began her career in media as a production assistant in “John en Marsha,” then moved on to become a drama actress and producer for BanCom Audiovision, Experimental Cinema of the Philippines, Vanguard Films, Regal Films, and Vision Exponents.

Before becoming a media executive, Santos-Concio became famous for acting in critically acclaimed films, most notably in “Brutal,” “Kisapmata,” “Gumapang Ka sa Lusak,” and Mike de Leon’s “Itim,” for which she won the Best Actress award in the 1978 Asian Film Festival.

She graduated cum laude from St. Paul’s College in Manila with a degree in Communications Arts and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 2007.
