PILIPINAS GOT TALENT

Will the Philippines find its own Susan Boyle who conquered the world with her singing prowess? The country's biggest and only nationwide talent-reality show Pilipinas Got Talent kicks off this Saturday (Feb) 20 on ABS-CBN with 60-yr old women strutting to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” to a 12-yr old kid belting out Nicole Scherzinger.

From the international franchise that discovered and continues to discover world class acts, Pilipinas Got Talent will feature the best and only the finest Pinoy talents from all over the country, covering all age groups, doing outstanding and breath-taking acts ranging from the usual singing, dancing, and acting pieces all the way to the weird, funny, and extraordinary acts.

Pilipinas Got Talent is hosted by Billy Crawford and Luis Manzano. The grand winner of this competition will take home P2 million. But before that, every hopeful must first be able to impress and get at least two approvals from PGT’s distinguished panel of judges— the country’s queen of all media Kris Aquino, comedy-concert queen Ai Ai Delas Alas, and former ABS-CBN President and COO Freddie M. Garcia a.k.a. FMG.

“I will not be swayed by beauty or gwapo, but just in pure talent. I will be fair but will be very analytical. I will look at all the elements of the performing talent or what we call the ‘x-factor.’ That’s what we are looking for,” said FMG or also rightfully called as the ‘expert’ being responsible for the success of many programs and artists in the entertainment industry.

Auditions started at the end of 2009 and thousands of PGT hopefuls flocked to the audition venues for a shot of becoming the first Pilipinas Got Talent winner.

Kris, in her Sunday entertainment show “The Buzz,” was quite impressed with the array of talents she have witnessed so far as she proudly commended the participants who made it to the first screening.

“You can definitely see how talented Filipinos are in all possible acts you can think of from singing all the way to doing magic and acrobatic stunts,” said Kris. “There is actually one contestant that I want to give a record deal already and there is this one group who can actually compete with acts in Las Vegas. They are that good.’

At the end of the semi-finals, only a few will be proclaimed finalists and the people will then have the power to choose who among them got the talent by voting for the finalist of their choice.

Don’t miss Pilipinas Got Talent, hosted by Billy Crawford and Luis Manzano, every Saturday beginning Feb 20,7:30 PM, and every Sunday, 8:30 PM on ABS-CBN.

Also, catch the funny moments and unseen footages in this highly-anticipated talent-reality show with Marc Abaya in “Pilipinas Got More Talent,” weekdays, 4:30 PM, beginning Monday (Feb 22).

FEU arranges title showdown with UST

FEU arranges title showdown with UST

Far Eastern University blanked listless Ateneo, 4-0, to forge a title duel with University of Santo Tomas in the 72nd UAAP men's football tournament Thursday at the Ateneo Erenchun Field in Quezon City.

Jason Cordova delivered two goals in the 26th and 61st minutes, respectively, while Glester Sobremisana (12th minute) and Filsan Akut (90th minute) also scored as the Tamaraws earned a trip to the championship round for the fourth consecutive season.

The Morayta-based squad improved to a record of six wins, one-draw and two defeats for 19 points to eliminate third placer La Salle (4-2-3 for 14 points) from finals contention.

FEU's win came on the day when UST defeated deposed champion University of the Philippines, 2-0, to nail the twice-to-beat incentive in the finals.

Mario Clarino (14th minute) and Nicanor Palacio (41st minute) scored a pair of goals in the first half as the Tigers remained unbeaten after nine games with a record of 7-2-0 for 23 points.

Both teams will play against each other on the last day of the elimination round on Sunday in a preview of the upcoming finals set for February 25. UST actually defeated FEU in 2007, the last time the school won a title.

In the other game, La Salle drew with cellar-dweller University of the East, 1-1. Michael Patao scored in the 39th minute to give the Archers the lead but the Warriors' Johnson Arboleda tied it in the 70th minute.

The stalemate derailed the Taft-based squad's chance of keeping their slim finals hopes alive. They improved to 4-2-3 for 14 points.

Meanwhile, the UAAP officially forfeited UP three games after it was found out that two of its players - Ghanaian Ayi Aryee and Nate De Guzman - also suit up in the ongoing United Football League which is prohibited under league rules.

The reversed games were the Maroons' 1-0 win over La Salle last January 28 and their 1-1 draw with Ateneo on February 7. The other game was a 2-1 loss to FEU last January 31.

All of these matches were given the final scores of 3-0. UP thus fell to fifth place with a 2-1-6 record for seven points.

Ateneo, on the other hand, climbed to fourth at 3-0-6 for nine points.

Meanwhile, UP stunned league-leader La Salle, 1-0, in Wednesday's football action at the Ocampo Field.

Kaira Dimacutac capitalized on the absence of the Lady Archers' main goalkeeper Hannah Ibarra because of an injury with a goal in the 58th minute as the fourth-placed Lady Maroons hiked their record to 2-1-4 for seven points.

La Salle, already assured of making the finals for the third consecutive time, suffered its first loss of the season and ended the elimination round with a 4-3-1 record for 15 points.

But the loss could very well hamper their fortunes in the championship round after FEU forged a virtual knockout match with defending champion UST for the other finals berth following a 6-0 blanking of cellar-dweller Ateneo in the other game at the Erenchun Field.

Ma. Sarah Sumalde highlighted the rout with goals in the 22nd and 33rd minute as the Lady Tamaraws (3-4-0) tied the Tigresses (4-1-2) for second with 13 points apiece.

These two teams will collide on Sunday at 1pm with the winner not only meeting the Taft-based squad in the finals but will finish the elims with 16 points and a twice-to-beat advantage.

However, a draw would give UST a spot in the next round because of a much better goal difference (+10) over the Lady Tams (+8). That scenario, though, would also enable La Salle to take the twice-to-beat bonus.

Is Twitter the news outlet for the 21st century?

2009-07-04T08:47:00.000-07:00

NEW YORK – Cassy Hayes and Jasmine Coleman were among the first fans to arrive outside the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles where Michael Jackson was brought and later pronounced dead.

How had Hayes, 25, and Coleman, 21, heard the news so quickly?

Twitter.

The two young women had learned about Jackson's health like so many who get their news nowadays: by reading the ever-flowing feed of real-time information on the microblogging service.

Jackson's unexpected death at 50 was just the latest major news event where Twitter played a central role. But just as quickly as Twitter has emerged as a news source, so, too, has its susceptibility to false rumors become abundantly apparent.

The extraordinary amount of news coverage the mainstream media has recently devoted to Twitter has led some to think the press is in love with the 3-year-old microblogging service. But it's a jealous love.

Twitter's constantly updating record of up-to-the-minute reaction has in some instances threatened to usurp media coverage of breaking news. It has also helped many celebrities, athletes and politicians bypass the media to get their message directly to their audience.

Make no mistake about it, Twitter has in many ways been a boon to the media. It's one more way a story might go viral and it's arguably the best way for a news outlet to get closer to their readership. Most outlets now have a presence on Twitter with a feed directing readers to their respective sites.

But even in an Internet world that has for years eroded the distance between media and consumer, Twitter is a jolt of democratization to journalism.

To date, the most salient, powerful example of Twitter's influence has been Iranian protesters using the service (among many other methods) to assemble marches against what they feel has been an unjust election.

Early in the protests, the State Department even urged Twitter to put off maintenance that would have temporarily cut off service. Twitter is difficult for governments to block because tweets — 140 characters or less — can be uploaded from mobile phones like a text message. (The Iranian government has nevertheless often succeeded in blocking Twitter, Facebook and other social networks.)

Further, many Americans were upset at what they considered CNN's thin early coverage of the revolution in Iran and voiced their complaints (where else?) on Twitter. Some said they preferred news on Twitter to the cable news network.

Twitter also produced eyewitness accounts of the Mumbai terrorist attacks last year. And when the US Airways jetliner crashed into New York's Hudson River, Twitter was among the first places photos of the landing were linked.

Many users have become accustomed to clicking on Twitter when news breaks. There, they can find a sea of reaction, commentary and links to actual articles.

The popular technology blog TechCrunch recently questioned whether Twitter is "the CNN of the new media generation."

"Twitter absolutely changes the media landscape," said Ross Dawson, author and communications strategy analyst. "I like to refer to Marshall McLuhan's description of media as `an extension of our senses.' Now, Twitter is extending our senses to tens of millions of people who are often right on the scene where things are happening."

Ashton Kutcher, one of Twitter's most popular users, in an earlier Web video evoked the rhetoric of a revolutionary: "We can and will create our media." Kutcher, who declined an interview request, sees Twitter as putting media power in the hands of regular people and — presumably — regular movie stars.

But comedian Michael Ian Black, a popular figure on Twitter, notes that while Twitter allows someone to "communicate very directly with people," it also allows you to keep them "totally at arm's length."

There are no follow-up questions on Twitter if the user chooses not to hear them. When tweets replace an interview or a press conference, something is lost. Twitter — where brevity can neatly do away with messy details — can thus be used to control one's message and one's image.

Cyclist Lance Armstrong, for example, has caused some news organizations to question how they approach Twitter. Armstrong, who's in the midst of a comeback bid, often treats Twitter as his primary news outlet.

In May during the Tour of Italy, Armstrong's end-around the media caused some news organizations to boycott his tweets. VeloNews.com, the Web site for a competitive cycling magazine, avoids using Twitter to establish facts without independent sourcing.

"It's one-sided," said VeloNews.com editor Steve Frothingham, who's a former Associated Press reporter. "It's us just sitting there taking what he's giving. We can't just not ask follow-up questions, we can't ask any questions."

Frothingham also notes the awkwardness of distribution. Armstrong's followers (more than 1.1 million) outnumber the readership of VeloNews.com. When Armstrong announced the birth of a son in early June on Twitter, he also, in effect, scooped cycling and tabloid outlets.

But truthfulness remains the biggest problem: Those direct, near-instantaneous dispatches are far less reliable than old-fashioned journalism. News that circulates on Twitter, re-tweeted from person to person, can spread quickly — often too quickly for it to be verified. False rumors spread daily on Twitter.

In the days following Jackson's death, fake reports have frequently had to be knocked down by news organizations that do the fact checking. Dawson notes that established media channels still have a virtual monopoly on credibility.

Erroneous declarations of celebrity deaths have been one trend.

Patrick Swayze, who is battling pancreatic cancer, recently had to defend that he is indeed still alive after thousands of Twitter users spread the news that he was dead.

Jeff Goldblum had to do the same. On Monday, he appeared on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" to confirm his warm-bloodedness. The host, Stephen Colbert, refused to believe him, preferring the random accounts on Twitter. Eventually, Goldblum, too, became convinced and eulogized himself.

While involvement in the protests in Iran might be Twitter's most meaningful achievement thus far, some have noted that many inaccuracies were circulated.

That has raised the concern that some people or governments may use Twitter to spread disinformation even more dangerous than suggesting Jeff Goldblum is dead.

Andrew Keen, author of "The Cult of the Amateur," believes Twitter — and whatever real-time Web services follow in its wake — represents the future of both the Internet and media.

But Keen says the Iran coverage on Twitter "exposes all the weakness of the service, the fact that it's so chaotic and unreliable. Who knows who's tweeting what?"

Some news outlets have begun aggregating, translating and confirming tweets said to be from Iran, including The Daily Dish (Andrew Sullivan's blog for The Atlantic magazine) and the Web site for the National Iranian American Council, a nonprofit organization that represents the interests of Iranian Americans on Capitol Hill.

"The very nature of an editor needs to shift," says Keen. "(The Iran experience) is going to underline the need more and more for curators, for people who are able to take all of this raw content and actually shape it into valuable news." - AP

Phivolcs monitoring Mayon Volcano abnormal activities

2009-07-04T08:46:00.000-07:00

MANILA, Philippines - State volcanologists have intensified monitoring of Mayon Volcano in Albay province after it showed signs of abnormal activity, a radio report said Saturday.

According to a report from Bombo Radyo, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) resident vulcanologist Ed Laguerta said they have been monitoring the volcano 24 hours daily after they noted a rise in the number of volcanic quakes in the area.

Laguerta also said the glow on Mayon's crater has become visible.

For now, Alert Level 1 remains for Mayon, but he advised tourists and visitors against mountain-climbing activities there.

Based on Philvolcs' alert system for Mayon Volcano sent to GMANews.TV, Alert Level 1 means there is low-level unrest with slight increase in seismicity.

It said, there is also "slight increase in Sulfur dioxide gas output above the background level. A very faint glow at the crater may occur, but no conclusive evidence of magma ascent."

At this level, no eruption is imminent, it added.

The Phivolcs Web site showed its latest advisory on Mayon was dated Aug. 10 last year, where the volcano manifested mild ash explosion that reached 200 meters from the crater.

Phivolcs reminded the public of the 7-kilometer Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) at the southeastern flank of the volcano and the 6-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) in other areas.

Such areas remain off-limits due to the continuing threat from sudden small explosions and falling rocks from the upper slopes.

Mount Mayon is 300 km southeast of Manila.

Meanwhile, a magnitude-5.1 quake rocked parts of Southern Luzon Saturday morning, but there was no initial report of casualty or damage.

The United States Geological Service (USGS) said the quake was recorded at 8:41 a.m., with the epicenter traced to 30 km west of Batangas.

It said the epicenter was also 60 km northwest of Calapan town in Mindoro; 100 km south-southwest of Manila; or 130 km south-southeast of Olongapo City in Zambales. - GMANews.TV

HOW TO GET A JOB!?

2009-07-04T07:30:00.000-07:00

Network. The best companies to work for tend to rely heavily (up to 40%) on employee referrals. Make a list of all of your friends, relatives, and acquaintances. Call each one and ask them if they know of any openings that they could recommend you for. Don't be too humble or apologetic; tell them what you've been looking for, but let them know that you're flexible and that if they have any suggestions, you're open to them. This is not the time to be picky about jobs; a connection can often get your foot in the door, and you can negotiate pay or switch positions later, once you've gained experience and established your reputation.
Volunteer. If you aren't already, start volunteering for an organization that focuses on something that you're passionate about. You may end up doing boring or easy work in the beginning, but as you stick around and demonstrate your commitment, you'll be given more responsibilities. Not only will you be helping others, but you'll also be gaining references. You should emphasize your volunteer experience on your resume, as companies that treat their employees well tend to favor candidates who help the community somehow.^[1]
Write a really well-written letter to the owner of the company/establishment. Make sure you highlight all your valuable skills and qualifications but also make it clear that you are flexible and a good team worker. Use good vocabulary and keep an appropriate tone of formality throughout your application.
Develop your personal elevator pitch. Many structured interviews, particularly those at large companies, start with a question like "tell me about yourself." The interviewer doesn't really want you to go back to grade school and talk about your childhood. This is a specific question with a specific answer...in two minutes or so, the interviewer wants to get you to relax and loosen out your vocal cords, understand your background, your accomplishments, why you want to work at XYZ company and what your future goals are.
Prepare for a behavioral interview. You might be asked to describe problems you've encountered in the past and how you handled them, or you'll be given a hypothetical situation and asked what you would do. They'll basically want to know how you'll perform when faced with obstacles in the position you're interviewing for. Be able to give honest, detailed examples from your past, even if the question is hypothetical (e.g. "I would contact the customer directly, based on my past experience in a different situation in which the customer was very pleased to receive a phone call from the supervisor"). You might find yourself listing facts--if so, remember that in this kind of interview, you need to tell a story. Some questions you might be asked are:
- "Describe a time you had to work with someone you didn't like."
- "Tell me about a time when you had to stick by a decision you had made, even though it made you very unpopular."
- "Give us an example of something particularly innovative that you have done that made a difference in the workplace."
- "How would you handle an employee who's consistently late?"
Research the company. Don't just "do an Internet search, memorize their mission, and be done with it." If it's a retail company, visit a few of their stores, observe the customers, and even strike up a few conversations. Talk to existing employees--ask them what it's like working there, how long the position has been open, and what you can do to increase your chances of getting it. Become familiar with the history of the company. Who started it? Where? Who runs it now? Be creative, and do whatever you think the other candidates don't have the guts to do.
Settle down. If you've moved around a lot, be prepared to offer a good reason for it. Otherwise, you'll need to make a good case for why you want to stick around in the area where the job is located. A company doesn't want to hire someone with wanderlust who still wants to relocate. Be prepared to outline why you are where you are today, how long you intend to stay there, and why. Give specific reasons like "This county has the best school systems in the entire state, and I have a daughter who might find the cure for cancer" or "I was drawn to this area because it's at the cutting edge of innovation for this business and I want to be a part of that." The more details, names, and specifics, the better.
Make a list of work-related skills you'd like to learn. Your employer will be interested in hearing about how you intend to become a better employee. Think about which skills will make you more competent in the position you're applying for. Public speaking, project management, team leading, and computer programs are usually beneficial. Find some books and upcoming conferences that would significantly improve your abilities. In an interview, tell the employer what you're reading and learning, and that you'd like to continue doing so.
Cold call. Locate a specific person who can help you (usually the human resources or hiring manager at a company or organization you're interested in). Call that person and ask if they are hiring, but do not become discouraged if they are not. Ask what kind of qualifications they look for or if they have apprentice or government sponsored work programs. Ask if you can send your resume indicating what field you want to go into. Indicate whether you would accept a lesser job and work up.
- Reflect after each phone call on what went well and what did not. You may need to write out some standard answers on your list of skills so you can speak fluently. You may need to get some additional training to break into your chosen field. None of this means you cannot get a good job, only that you need to become further prepared to do so.
Change your attitude. There's a difference between making phone calls and going to interviews thinking "I'm looking for a job" versus "I'm here to do the work you need to have done".When you're looking to get a job, you're expecting someone to give something to you, so you focus on impressing them. Yes, it's important to make a good impression, but it's even more important to demonstrate your desire and ability to help. Everything that you write and say should be preceded silently by the statement "This is how I can help your business succeed."
Fit the job to the skills rather than the other way around. Many people search for jobs, then try to see how they can "tweak" the way they present their own skills and experiences to fit the job description. Instead, try something different. Make a list of all of your skills, determine which kinds of businesses and industries need them most (ask around for advice if you need to) and find businesses that'll benefit from having you and your skills around. It's important the nature of the job fits your personality and salary requirements, otherwise you'll have spent a significant amount of time to find a day job you dread getting up for every morning. There are numerous online resources available for this, such as personality tests, guidance counselors, CareerCritique, etc.^[2]

Tips

Realize that you may have to work your way up. For example, if you want to become an apparel buyer, work for a company that manufactures or sells such goods.
Remember you are doing some HR workers a favor when you present yourself and they do not have to go out and find workers like you. If you get a rude person, be happy you don't have to choose to work for them.
It's also possible that your true calling is to be self-employed or an entrepreneur, in which case your task is not so much to find and get a job, but to create a job. Most people who work for themselves, however, often started off with a "day job" that paid the bills until their preferred income source could take over.
Be willing to spend some time learning about the job. Observe or intern to get some experience.
Of course, it's not everything, but it is best to dress appropriately to create the right impression.

Movie Review - Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen

2009-07-04T07:20:00.000-07:00

Before filming commenced, internet legend has it that Michael Bay challenged McG to a ‘dick measuring contest’ - equating to Terminator Salvation versus Transformers.

While it’s hard to tell who has the biggest dick from the movies alone, Bay wins on sheer balls - quite literally at one point. Revenge Of The Fallen is bigger, badder and stupider in every way than its predecessor.

Its a fantastic ride, but one that suffers from Bay’s trademark crash-bang editing, meaning you’ll remember the set pieces, but struggle to care about the plot.

If anyone cares, it turns out that our chunky metal pals have been on Earth for a looooong time and first started showing up around 20,000BC (subtly illustrated with a cavemen vs killer robot fight). When our hero, Sam (Shia LaBeouf) accidentally gets some alien knowledge stuck in his noggin, it sets up a race around the world to find something called ‘the Matrix’ and thwart eeeeevil British robot ‘The Fallen’.

Yep, it’s a biblical allegory with added robot combat and, frankly, it’s all the better for it. Obama may want to take credit for bringing the boys home from Iraq, but it looks like most of them were needed to work on this, with masses of tanks, choppers and troops blowing the hell out of everything in sight throughout.

The film’s target audience is 15-year-old boys, and they get well and truly served with the explosive combo of sunset battles, cool cars, ultraviolence and Megan Fox’s super-tight jeans.

Robot-wise, the big names from the first film are back, with plenty of Starscream/Megatron bitching and a completely insane opening sequence in Shanghai, with Optimus Prime duking it out with what appears to be a demented, giant unicycle. Optimus gets an upgrade here too, with glowing sword attachments that will bring tears to the eye of 30-something men everywhere.

The films biggest problem is its choppy style, which shows up every flaw in the exo-skeleton. The movie tries a little too hard to be funny, with the always-value-for-money John Turturro fighting to keep his secret Agent wannabe afloat, and far, far too much comic relief. The idea of twins who talk in hip-hop rhymes may have been amusing in a cartoon when you were eight, but here it feels like overkill.

Save Now

Gripes aside, this does exactly what you expect from a Bay film. Explosions, hot girls, piles of military hardware and nary a thought for plot as it hurtles recklessly toward an epic, money-shot climactic fight outside the pyramids. We get to see every penny of the CGI budget onscreen as upwards of 40 robots collide. If there isn’t a part of you that doesn’t enjoy the site of an especially massive robot called ‘Devastator’, complete with two huge wrecking balls between its legs, punching the top off the Sphinx, I pity you.

Crazed, hyperactive and nonsensical. It’s also curiously lovable and a true multiplex movie. Roll out and see it now.
