When I first discovered we could paint fabric with Chalk Paint™ my mind started doing cartwheels with all the possibilities. One would think painting fabric could look cheapish or even devalue a fine piece of furniture. Au contraire!!! If this procedure is done properly and with care it can look mighty fine!!! This is a great way to save mucho $$$$.

Our first test was on a couple of badly soiled chairs covered with a cotton fabric. We used Duck Egg Blue and just slapped it on quickly. It took about a day to dry. In our photo the fabric is still wet. Once it dried the results where fabulous. Most are blown away with how the fabric absorbed the Chalk Paint™ and is soft to the touch.

Chalk Paint™ being a porous paint allows us to paint fabric without it cracking. Chalk Paint™is also highly pigmented and even watered down gives a nice even coat on the fabric.

Our next project was on a large antique sofa. In its current state at the time of purchase we would have to say it was quite unsightly, but we saw the potential. The wood frame was painted with a high gloss oil paint, thin in some areas and thick with paint drippings in other areas.

The fabric, a soiled toile, was so badly upholstered you could see most of the staples. Upon removing the toile we were left with a faux beige suede, yikes. It really did not suit the style of the sofa but it was clean, in good condition and properly upholstered. The cost to have the piece reupholstered, was not an option for resale in our demographics so we decided to paint the faux suede with Chalk Paint™. Our choice of colours for this project, graphite for the wood frame with a mix of French Linen with soft wax and for the fabric we chose Provence.

Before starting your project it is very important to assess what type of fabric you will be painting. We found with thicker fabric, velvets or cut velvet you would have to water down the Chalk Paint™ to ensure it penetrates and saturates the thick fabric. A ratio of 30% water to 70% Chalk Paint™ allowed the paint to properly penetrate the fabric on our project. The ratios may vary depending on your project. Our very large sofa used 1 1/2 pints (946ml) of Chalk Paint™ and we applied 3 coats to get a nice even finish. This was a labor of love in our atelier. 4 of us actually worked on the project at different stages. Every time there was a moment to spare from serving our customers, one of us would pick up a brush and paint.

At times we get visitors who are addicted to Chalk Paint™ and can't keep their hands away from the stuff! A good friend of mine, Susan stopped by for a visit.

She also contributed to this project. This girl can paint a piece of furniture in record time. You cannot keep a brush out of her hands. She writes a beautiful blog here in Montreal, Simply Vintageous and she also has quite the following for her signature pieces painted with Pure white, old white and Paris Grey.

For the frame we used Graphite but we wanted the carved wood to stand out. To enhance the scroll work and medallions on the frame we used a blended mix of French Linen with Annie Sloan clear soft wax. We first applied a nice thin even coat of clear soft wax. Don't forget your wipe down. Applying 1 coat of clear wax before the coloured blended mix allows you to manipulate and spread the coloured wax. Mixing Chalk Paint™ into the soft wax will change the colour of your base coat once it is applied. You may want to test this out on a sample board before hand. There are many colour combinations you can create with this method. We have a few popular ones in our boutique customers love and keep requesting. The more Chalk Paint™ that is mixed into the wax the more opaque the colour wax will be. In this case we used a blend of 20% Chalk Paint™to 80% clear soft wax. We wanted it to be very subtle, enough to just enhance the scroll work without changing the colour of Graphite too much.

To finish your project you may use clear soft wax on the fabric to protect and coat it. This gives your painted fabric a slight look of leather. We are frequently asked if the wax will come off on your clothing, the answer is No. It will not come off on your clothing if the wax has time to properly cure. A very thin, thin layer of wax will cure in about 30 days. Another option is to spray scotch guard on the fabric to protect it from getting soiled.

Your completed project will not crack or chip and will last a very long time if treated with care just like any other piece of upholstered furniture.

We were unable to get a full shot of the completed sofa due to a lack of space in our boutique. The photos you see have been taken through our boutique window. This piece draws a lot of attention from the street. Customers are truly amazed that you can paint fabric and achieve this look. The fabric absorbs the paint and it looks fabulous.

My day off - Monday, a day to contemplate our future.

I started this post on my day off, Monday....It is now Saturday and I have just completed it. 6 days to write one post. I'm trying, I'm trying.

After working for 6 days straight, it is very hard to get up and be motivated to do much. As I sit on my deck with my iPad, I decided to write a little post. This will be my first post via iPad, so bare with me!!! Lets see how this goes.....
Two weeks ago my ever so important assistant, store manager, my " please don't ever leave" "more then an employe" Melanie told me to start taking 2 days off. Either she is sick of seeing my face, she just wants to do what she wants to do without me micro managing, or she just loves me :). Whatever the answer is, I so,so appreciate it. Here she is, my beautiful niece.

My niece and I have had what I would call a labor of love, literally! Nepotism in its truest form!!! It just so happens that no matter what job I worked at or where, she has always, somehow worked with me or even after me. This worked out well for her and I. She has always been well liked. Melanie is a highly intelligent, well educated young lady. She left Montreal for a period of close to 4 years to get her university degree in BC. Why am I telling you all this? Because I know Melanie's days are numbered and she will be leaving me at some point to do what she was meant to do in life. I am fully aware that working at Piorra Maison is not her life's work. When that day comes I know I will be crying, no probably hanging on to her leg begging for her not to leave MEEEEEE!

We spend so much time talking about what is bad. Today I took the time to think about what is good. I will cherish my remaining days with her and I am so grateful for all her patience and understanding. Piorra Maison is a very young company and our success today can be attributed to the dedication and hard work of my niece Melanie. She stuck it out with me through some really slow, tearful and long days. She has seen the worst of me and the best of me. We do have our differences, and sometimes we clash but I reconsider and contemplate. Her opinion and her intelligent feedback mean a lot to me. I have great respect for her. Yes, we do have our good days and bad days, but the best days are the days when we call it a " Paint Day". This relaxes us, lets us refocus and we get to play and be creative all day long with Chalk Paint™.

I have been oohing and humming for 3 months trying to figure out the future of Piorra Maison. Our lease ends in January of 2013. Our landlords will be taking possession of our space in Pointe-Claire village and I have been frantic to find a new space suitable for our growing business. The truth of the matter is Piorra Maison has outgrown the space , but we are sticking it out for the remainder of our lease. Poor Melanie has heard it all....one day we are staying in the village, the next we are moving to Laval, the next we are moving downtown, no today we are staying in the village..... Well we think we have found a solution. So, keep in touch and we will reveal as we move forward with our decisions. And yessss Melanie has been stating the obvious for awhile but fear has held me back. Fear has never held me back before and I needed, I guess time to process everything. I once read that a successful person is an unreasonable person. If they listened to reason they could not have taken chances. The chances I have taken have led me to some unreasonable choices which have led me to success. Reasonable choices equals fear. If I let fear or reason talk me out of some of my unreasonable choices I would not be where I am today. Melanie took a leap of faith to join me in this adventure and I will be so ever grateful to her for believing in me and Piorra Maison.

A glimpse at a few possibilities....

Ah, I feel so much better knowing I, we have a direction to move forward on.
In the next few weeks we will be revealing our unreasonable choices. Our next steps will be fearful but I will be putting fear behind us and blazing forward in a true Piorra Maison fashion. We know we have some west island customers and followers that are anxious to know about our future plans and we assure you that we are doing everything in our power to accommodate you. If all goes to plan, you will not be disappointed. Follow us on this journey, stay tuned as they say. Please feel free to comment and leave your opinions. Imagine the unthinkable - Antique Purses

I have some really interesting things to show you! Imagine the unthinkable. I have been collecting them for a few years. The unthinkable? Yes... my good friend just moved into a new home and she invited me to dinner. She tells me once I arrive, "I have some things to give you." The unthinkable happens..she starts opening up sheets of newspaper and behold....Gorgeous, but gorgeous, be still my heart...no not vintage, these are antique purses. I almost died. Each one she showed me was just as exquisite as the one before. One after another of precious beaded and embroidered beauties from the Victorian era.

I did a little research on them. This gorgeous delicate beauty is a Micro Beaded Antique purse from the late Victorian era, skillfully knitted with tiny micro glass beads.

An Authentic hand made design from the late 1800's to early 1900. The interior maintains it original fabric lining and gathered trim. Stunning!!!

In such great condition. Here is a close up of the bead tassel.

Below a close up of the Bead work. Not one bead missing.

Now have a look at the next one. This is a French 1920's silver & gold glass beaded hand bag.

Even the beige / cream lining is in great condition. Notice the stitching around the frame to hold the beaded portion. Imagine, all these antique purses are hand made.

No visible beads missing.

Next beaded beauty. They call these "Beaded Reticule". This is one of the finest beaded reticules I have ever had my hands on dating from the mid-1800"s.

Usually these beaded purses have deteriorated, to the point with many holes and with a lot of bead loss due to dry rot. This one has a beautiful crochet top. In mint condition.

All of these purses have obviously been cherished and meticulously cared for over the years and is about as close to perfect I have ever seen.

Not a bead missing on this one either.

I have a few more to show you but I will save it for another post.

I want to thank my good friend for giving me these gorgeous items that I will cherish for a long time. I am currently repainting my glass cabinet with French Linen Chalk Paint® that usually holds all my precious belongings that I have collected throughout the years. I cannot wait to display these. I will also try and blog about the small changes in my home...I am trying, I say trying because I really don't get much time to actually do anything around my house...my home has become so neglected. I am going to have to just take the time.

I am also going to try and blog more often just because I miss it and love it!!!! So this is a good start. :)

My Annie Sloan Work Book - With all my imperfect inspiration.

This past year I haven't had much time to be inspired at home. I have been spending most of my spare time at my boutique. Although I love it, I have made a little New Year's resolution to myself. In 2013 it will be the year I spend a little more time away from the boutique and more time nesting. I am quite ashamed to admit, but I do not have, not one drop of Chalk Paint™ in my home. I have been dying to re-do a few things, NO a lot of things. Which brings me to Annie's wonderful, inspiring Work Book. Yesterday was the official launch of her Work Book. I am sad to say I had wanted to post this yesterday but the Flu Bug has hit us all in the store this week including myself, causing a little ruffle in our feathers. So here I am, a day late.

I normally do not do things this way. I can visualize an entire project from start to finish in my head. Colour schemes, furniture, everything. I have recently discovered that some people cannot visualize their projects. Annie's Work Book can help others to plan out colour schemes, furniture choices, and help to inspire them. As I sat down to plan out my colour scheme for my kitchen , Something hit me!!! Something I haven't felt in a long time as far as my home was concerned. I became really excited to get this project on the way. I was so inspired I had to write it out on the first page!!!!

My inspirations, My dreams, my colours, My Work Book.

I am excited to share what I have started.

Tomorrow, I will be sharing it in my workshop as well.

So something that started off as a commitment to promote Annie's Work Book (sorry Annie) actually woke something up inside of me. Don't know if it was just the hard work that I have put into my business throughout this past year and a half but my home was an afterthought. I was no longer inspired to even clean it. I haven't entertained in my home for over a year. yes the bug hit me!! I really, really want to get this started. Here are my colour choices:

Graphite - floor,

French Linen - lower cabinets,

Old Ochre- upper cabinets.

I really love Graphite and French Linen together. My kitchen walls are Red. Oddly the same red as Emperor's Silk. I still love the red.

Something else you need to know about me. I am messy. During my workshops I get paint on my face, paint in my hair, paint on my shoes, Chalk Paint™ everywhere. This is when I am the happiest. When I am being creative, when I am inspiring others to be creative too. So no surprise my Work Book is messy too. I just realized I haven't sketched in years, ahhh it is wonderful. Although it is a quickie sketch. But this is what the Work Book is all about. It is not about perfection, not about being an artist, nor is it for anyone else but for yourself.

This is my Work Book.......and only MINE!

With all my imperfect inspiration. I look forward to sharing the realization of my projects this coming New Year and sharing them through my Work Book.

Chalk Paint™ Peinture à la Craie par Annie Sloan - Paloma avec Cire Foncée

A lovely piece transformed. I will keep this short and sweet. I no longer have the time to blog. Which is a love of mine. Eventually I can combine it all together. The Boutique keeps me so busy, but I cannot complain because I love it equally! So here we go with a custom finish for a client. Please bare with me, these are all iPhone photos. I seem to have misplaced my charger for my digital camera.

The dark wax can really change the character of the original Chalk Paint™ colour. We started off with a base of Paloma on a surface that has seen better days. This commode was a gem to work on. great lines, curves, and details, not to mention the original drawer pulls.

We found this written on the inside of the top drawer. Someone certainly has issues with Mother! The consensus at the boutique is..." this will take years of therapy to remedy".

On to our project: We applied a quick & thick coat of Paloma using a thick Bristle brush - Annie's Brush is excellent for this project.

Her brushes are amazing to paint with. If you are a serious furniture painter (or not) I highly recommend it. It holds a lot of paint and allows you to paint a piece in record time. The soft bristles also allows you to get into those nooks a crannies.

With Annie's brush we are creating texture through our brush strokes. We want texture... this will later be enhanced by the waxes, adding that extra shabby chicness.

We then applied a very thin coat of soft clear wax. Immediately followed by a coat of dark soft wax. I mixed my dark wax with a bit of mineral spirits to get a smoother look. One more coat of clear wax was applied the following day.

Our next step, hardware; Yes, you can paint metal (brass) with Chalk Paint™, in other words you can paint the ugly brassy hardware. This piece had the original drawer pulls, a gift on older pieces. But the original brass did not suit the style we were going for. We painted them a mix between the Paloma and Graphite. No wax necessary!

Drawer pulls on a grand dresser, is the one good piece of jewelry you will add to your outfit just before going out the door to give a fabulous look and the finishing touch. The knobs on your piece can make or break the style you are trying to achieve. On this piece it really made the style. I get asked persistently, where did you get those lovely drawer pulls? Most are surprised when I tell them they are original to the piece. It is a sad reality, most want to remove them to update their pieces, when all they need is a coat of Chalk Paint™.

This lovely piece is sold. It breaks my heart to see pieces go out the door, but that is the point right? I know it is going to a lovely home and will be appreciated.

Well it has been awhile since I wrote a post about what is going on in my life. I feel it is time to get back to what I love and the basics. We have been busy busy little bees. Creating what is now Piorra Maison.

We have been working our little butts off in the French media to put the "Peinture a la Craie" D'Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ news out there for all the Quebecois people. Here we are filming for Canal Vie at Piorra Maison for a wonderful new show called "Sauvez les Meubles" (Save the furniture), with Vanessa Sicotte from Damask et Dentelle. The season starts in September and runs for 24 episodes. We are one of the sponsors supplying them with the Chalk Paint™ decorative paints by Annie Sloan for the full run of the show. The Product awareness that will come from this show will be great for us.

I will have to admit, it has not been easy but we have accomplished what most people could not have accomplished in half the time. Of course it helps that we are working with a wonderful Product.

I now move on to the second chapter of "the Store" and to what I love to do: We will be taking this wonderful Chalk Paint™ and some unfinished pieces along with some of our vintage finds on the road.

We will be travelling throughout Quebec to Promote the store and the Chalk Paint™. We will also be scavenging for some wonderful treasures to bring back for our customers to enjoy. I will become Quebec's Brocanteurs. Along with my sidekick, and Niece seen above, who shares the passion with me.

As I sit in my basement in front of my computer wearing a very snugly warm bathrobe, I write my first post to the second chapter of my life and the store. Now you ask is it winter time? When did she write this??? No!!!! but I think I need to crank up the Air Conditioner a couple of degrees because my toes have fallen off from frost bite. My poor son has been complaining how cold it has been in the basement...while the rest of the world is sweating bullets. I have not been down here in awhile, certainly not for a long period of time sitting in front of my computer, I have been too busy at the store. I HEAR ya Son.... Man-o-man I need to end this and get me some heat! Announcing 34 degrees Celsius today!

Wow, this feels great... to be writing again, with all my "faux pas" spelling and grammer, I mean grammar mistakes.. Hopefully I will be back real soon to give you more up-dates on the "going ons"

Je suis tellement excitée parce que je vient de rentrer chez moi avec une nouvelle trouvaille et je veux commencée mon projet tout de suite.

Dans le garage de mon condo, les gens jettent plein de choses. La semaine dernière j'ai trouvée une plante et aujourd'hui un classeur dans la poubelle.

Ca ne me dérange pas de prendre les poubelles des autres et de les apporter chez moi. C'est un bon deal et de plus, au lieu de remplir un centre de déchets on les réutilise.

Ce qui est le plus cool avec les trouvailles est que tu peut trouver de choses très unique et tu na pas à avoir peur de les ruiner avec ta créativité.

Pour ce projet j'ai utilisée ma couleur préférer de la Peinture à la Craie Annie Sloan; le Emperor's Silk. Un rouge très vif.

C'est le troisième projet que je finis avec le même pot de peinture. J'adore que c'est hyper facile d'utiliser. Je suis tellement paresseuse que je n'ai même as nettoyer le classeur avant de le peinturer.

J'adore le rouge mais il y a de quoi qui manque...

Alors pour ajouter un peu de caractère je peinture l'intérieure avec le Aubusson Blue. J'aime beaucoup l' apparence du classeur quand c'est finit.

Mais la meilleure chose est que je suis rentrer à 22:00 et il est maintenant 23:30.

Je pense que les couleur plus oser de la Peinture à la Craie Annie Sloan son superbe pour utiliser comme couleur d'accent ou a l'intérieure de tiroirs...

... à moins que tu aimes les montrer. Comme j'aime le Emperor's Silk. En plein jour je vois qu'il y a de petits coins qui ont besoin d'un petit retouche. Mais c'est pas mal pour une couche de peinture sur le métal.

I just got home and I am so excited to start a new project right away!!!

In the garage in my building people are always throwing stuff away. Last week I found a Ficus plant, today an old filing cabinet.

I am not above taking something from the garbage and giving it a new home. In my opinion it's a good business deal. Plus, I believe that re-using something that was headed for landfill can never hurt.

The best thing about garbage finds is that you can find some really unique pieces and never have to be afraid of experimenting because you paid nothing for it.

I used my favourite Annie Sloan chalk paint color; Emperor's Silk. It's the third project I use the same can of paint for.

I love how easy it is to use. I am really lazy and did not even clean this piece before I paint it. (Not recommended).

I love the way the red looks but feel like there is a little something missing.

To add a little character I painted the inside with Aubusson Blue.

I love the finished look. Even when it is still wet...

Best of all I started this at 10pm and it is now 11:30.

I think the really funky colours from Annie Sloan Chalk paint are great to use as accents inside drawers and cabinet...

...unless you love to showcase them,

the way I love Emperor's Silk!!!

In the daylight I see that there are a few places that need a touch up. But for one coat on metal, it looks really good even if I do say so myself!!!

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ - Antoinette, how it can be the inspiration for your whole room. A lovely soft pink. I was never a pink fan until I was introduced to Antoinette. Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ newest colour. The whole concept of my store is based on the Shabby Nouveau and industrial chic movement. Piorra Maison is about all things to inspire and desire and boy have I been inspired by Antoinette. I love the combination of Antoinette and French Linen. The two colors where meant to be married together. Here are more rooms and just things to inspire you to use Antoinette as a base colour for any room or occasion in your home.

I know my daughter would love this in her NY flat. While I was at the NYIGF show we picked up a crystal/glass chandelier for her space. It's a start. :) During my next stop in NY I will have to bring her a can of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ - Antoinette. I know she will go to town with it.

In my wildest dreams I would never have considered pink for my kitchen. Here it is. And its so fresh and inviting.

A pink Christmas. Oh So Fabulous. I want a pink Christmas this year......Now I just have to get rid of my ORANGE walls. Time to move on!

Peinture à la Craie Annie Sloan. Provnece - Un étranger qui devient vite amie...

Il y a des gens qui croissent notre chemin qui nous inspire et nous rempplissent de joie. Dès notre peremière rencontre, je savais que Rita serai ce type de personne. Originellement, elle passait devant Piorra Maison est à décider de rentrer pour jeter un coup d'oeil. Elle s'est vite intéressée par la Peinture à la Craie Annie Sloan.

Elle m'a expliquée qu'elle avait une chaise qu'elle voulait renouveler mais ne savait pas comment s'y prendre. La promesse de pouvoir transformer ses meubles Sans sabler, Sans apprêter, en faite sans aucunes préparations, lui semblait magnifique et elle s'est inscrite à notre atelier de bricoleuse.

La chaise qu'elle a emmenée à été rembourée avec un Bargello fait à la main par Rita elle-même. Rita pensait que la couleur de la chaise en bois était affreuse et terne. Et que la chaise avait vraiment besoin d'une nouvelle vie...

Après avoir choisi la couleur Provence et avoir décidé de la donner plus de caractère avec un peu de cire foncé, Rita a rapidement appris la technique pour appliquer la peinture.

La couleur Provence & la cire foncé a très bien allé avec son Bargello. Rita nous a encore impressionnée avec l'oeil qu'elle avait pour appliquer la cire sans en mettre trop.

Avec un peu de direction elle a maitrisé l'art du "distressing" ou l'art de vieillir un meuble. Sa chaise semble avoir agit sans effort au cours des années. C'est une vraie chef-d'oeuvre.

De plus, depuis l'atelier Rita passes dans la boutique presque chaque jour. Elle rentre, toujours en souriant et nous éclate de rire avec son sense de l'humour. On est très contente de pouvoir maintenant l'appeler une de nos amies....

There are some people who cross our paths that inspire us and bring us great joy. From the moment Rita walked in to Piorra Maison I instantly knew she would be one of those people. Initially, she was just walking by and decided to take a fast peek in our boutique. She quickly took an interest in our Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.

She told me she had an old chair in her home that she wanted to revitalize but wasn't sure how she would go about this. With the promise of No Sanding, No Priming and No Prep-work Rita enthusiastically signed up for our full day DIY workhop. We impatiently waited for the day Rita would be coming in with her piece.

The chair she brought in had been re-upholstered with a hand-made Bargello seat made by Rita herself. But Rita thought the current color was ugly and blah... And in dire need of a new life!

After deciding to paint her chair with the color Provence and giving it added character with some dark wax, Rita picked up the knack for painting rapidly.

The Provence & dark wax matched her patterned seat seamlessly. Rita once again dazzled us with her eye for applying the dark wax without over doing it.

With some guidance she mastered the art of distressing. Her chair is a masterpiece that looks as though it aged effortlessly over the years...

Rita is now a regular at the shop and has stopped by almost everyday since the workshop. She always comes in with a smile and warms our hearts, and fills our day with laughter!!! We are so glad we can now call her friend.

Springfest in the village and a giveaway!

I cannot say enough nice things about Annie Sloan, all the stockists and Bloggers I met in Boston. Thank you, to Lisa Richert from Jolie Design & Décor Inc. for having the vision and passion to bring us all together with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. She is the Brainstorm behind the North American Stockist.

Sadly most of my photos were taken from my iPhone and are not Blog worthy. They will just hurt the eyes. So I have some very blurry photos with some of my most favorite bloggers. :(

I was so flabbergasted when I found out I was gonna meet some famous bloggers!!!!

Ya see...back home in Québec, Canada there are not too many bloggers. So meeting Bloggers was quite exciting for me. I never thought I ever would. If someone had told me a year and a half ago, when I started my blog, I would meet some top bloggers and Annie Sloan ....well, I would have told them to go stick it where the sun don't shine....so someone pinch me!!!!

I went home with a big smile on my face and many, many tips and ideas I have been applying in my workshops and in the store.
