We are away in Melbourne for the week. Before I post a new tutorial and giveaway, here's some photos of our summer garden. The tomatoes are starting to ripen, we are loving it (and the rats too).

This year's garlic crop, sun cured and plated but still a bit hairy.

We had some very tall sunflowers this year. And guess what? Yes, the rats got into that too. They managed to climb up the stalks and help themselves to some seeds (with the flower head hanging upside down) and use the top of the flower head as a table. It's war.

The past few weeks

I seem to be only capable of writing one post every few weeks and loading all the photos I've managed to take in that time... Too busy to slow down. I sometimes wonder if the crazyness of being at home minding two young toddlers and gardening, sewing, trying to keep the house/ building site tidy-ish transpires through these posts... A friend told me the other day she thought we actually liked living in a messy house. I was a bit shocked, I have to admit. Do people think I like living in a house with toys and clothes thrown all over the floor, dishes pilled up by the sink (we don't own a dishwasher) and dust gathering on every single piece of furniture? Should I be madly cleaning everyday to keep the place tidy and let my kids play by themselves, growl at them as soon as they drop some avocado on the floor and teach them to fold and put their clothes away as soon as they can walk? It is my bad luck that I have a partner that couldn't care less if the house looks like we just moved in even though we've been living here for 4 years now, except when we have visitors and then he'll have a full day of spring clean. Maybe we should have dinners and parties more often?

So, to put the record straight, I am definitely not the tidiest person on earth either, but I do like a nice clean house with a good Qi (pronounce "Chi", as in energy flow in Feng Shui) and lots of storage to keep various objects hidden away. When we moved into our house, Tahi was 1 month, we had no furniture apart from a table and a bench and the house was pretty much a building site. Four years down the track the house is still a building site, although very much closer to the finished state. Josh thinks cleaning up and putting things away is a waste of time. I am busy with two kids and a garden, and, as anyone with kids will know, it takes 3 times as long to get things done. I decided a while ago that I wasn't going to stress out about having a clean house and that my sanity and that of our couple was more worth it than a clean house. I might have my priorities wrong and I have clenched my teeth quite a few times at the state of our living quarters but I'm still alive. And slowly getting the house to look a bit more respectable.
Anyway, the couch is close to finished and a welcome addition to our lounge, I have it one pallet hight at the moment with two of the three cushions I planned on making and it looks really cool, is very comfy and actually a nice height for slouching with the kids. I cut out some square of foam from a couch found on the side of the road, luckily they were the perfect thickness.

I also broke my New Year's resolution to stop buying fabrics until most of my current stash was gone. We had a clothes swap and I scored a couple of nice bits, including some really nice oilcloth (some of which I used to make a new "make up bag" (now, I don't wear make up, so it's mainly for toothbrushes and various creams and remedies). "That's not technically a breach of New Year Resolution" I though, since the fabric was free...
But then I did buy some fabric last week from a friend who brought it back from China. I'd always wanted some of that red fabric with the beautiful flowers and birds... Damn, only a month into my resolution, I sincerely thought I'd do better than that...

I also got round to (finally) making a couple of tunics/ kaftans for Miro to protect his lovely baby skin from the sun. He of course looks very cute in them. I will make some more in time for the shop, it's on my to do list somewhere between twirly skirts and upcycled pants.

I love the fabrics of this tunic! The main fabric is from a summer kimono, a soft delicate white cotton with a dash of blue squares. I used some of the african wax fabric I bought off a friend for the cuffs

This one is a longer night gown version for night time. We have had a relatively crappy summer with some cool nights. This was the perfect outfit so Miro wouldn't get too hot or too cold.

Anyway, I do apologize for my lengthy posts, I will try to be a bit more regular in the future. Well, I hope. And I really appreciate the comments some of you leave, I feel really bad for never answering but I do read them!

We had a great time on Sunday, lots of friends turned up and even though the wind was strong at times we enjoyed hanging out on the deck. The sun even came out!

Josh and I spent a few hours beforehand setting up sails and a fabric tent outside, laid a carpet on the deck and spread lots of pillows, cushions and mattresses around. It looked really cool and everyone enjoyed lounging there while sipping some champagne. The kids had the whole house to themselves and the next day it looked like a big box of toys had exploded everywhere.

I made some special candles for the occasion too, which I was very happy with. Tutorial to follow!

Book review: Koanga garden guide

I started gardening when we moved to Gisborne 4 years ago. For the first time I had a backyard I could dig up. In all respects I am a total beginner. The first year I dug up a 10mx1m trench during Tahi's nap times, filled it with the compost the previous owner had been making and bought some seedlings. They grew well. The following year nothing grew much though, so I figured I should start from the beginning and learn to make good compost, which I am still learning of course, but getting better at it.
The great thing about being a beginner is that you can see how much better you're doing with every gardening season. The downside is that it is often through trial and error. So far, I manage to get one crop right each year. Three years ago it was zucchinis, we were picking three a day minimum no kidding. The next year it was beans. This year it was salad. We were eating big bowls of lettuce twice a day. After a month Josh stopped saying how great it is to eat fresh salad from the garden in summer.
I was lucky to be given a few gardening books and I kept from buying any because it seemed pointless to add yet another gardening book to our library. Then a friend was talking about the "Koanga Garden Guide" and how it was her partner's bible (a fellow keen gardener). Then I decided to buy it. Then I got the other books and gave them away.

If you live in New Zealand and want to or already garden organically, then go no further. This book has all the information you need. From how to make compost, to how to save your seeds, including seed sowing, garden prep, growing instructions for each type of vegetable, heritage seed information and gardening by the moon. It's clearly written, well explained and it's from here! A table of contents would make it more user friendly, I just end up marking the useful pages.
The author, Kay Baxter, is an accomplished gardener and seed saver. She runs a heritage seed saving business from which you can purchase a variety of heritage seeds from, grown in New Zealand.

Not there yet

Ok, I'm still cleaning up, sort of. It's our birthday this Saturday and we like to have an excuse to party. Since achieving anything with two kids takes a looong time, I'm also busy getting food and decorations ready for the said party. Bits and bobs. Promise, this time there will be photos.

It's about time I showed up, isn't is?
well, we went away for Christmas this year, spent it with some of Josh's family. It was very nice, the kids got spoilt. then we did a bit of a road trip around the East Coast, which I'd never been to before. I loved it, stunning!

Unfortunately it wasn't much of a holiday for Josh. He'd built a cool little box (he ended up saying it was my xmas present, probably because he didn't have time for making anything else let alone think about what to get me!) with bunk beds so we could sleep in it during our little adventure. It worked a treat except for the trailer it was built on. It turned out the two metal bars that link the trailer to the car weren't solid enough, don't ask me for the technical term (although you'd think I know it by now).

The first time it happened we stopped for lunch on our way to Whangamata. Josh noticed a crack on one of the bars. Fixed it with some metal rods he found, and also changed the bunks around to make them more comfortable. We left, then spent some time with some friends who live up a river, i.e. there is no road access to their place. It was a rocky ride to get there to say the least. Tahi was screaming with joy and excitement and it felt like we were on one of those adventure rides you pay to go on at the fair. The trailer didn't like it either, and when we left Josh (doing his usual little check before getting on the the -tar sealed- road) saw a new crack on the same bar. Luckily he'd kept the leftover from that same rod he used for the first crack, and even more luckily he'd bought a power drill from the op shop in Waihi a couple of days earlier (the one he used on the earlier repairs was craping out). So, an hour and a bit later, we're on the road again.

We spent a few days, including New Year's eve, with our friends who live on a farm with no electricity in a 10m2 house. We had a great time, the kids played all day and we just hung out (except for Josh who as building a bunk in the box for Tahi).
When we finally set off to go home along the bumpy east coast roads, 20 minutes into our drive we heard a big "CONK" and felt a bump on the rear of the car, then a noise like metal being dragged on the road. Well, there was some metal grinding the tar seal, it was the two bars that linked the trailer to the car!

Luckily we were going downhill (I get the shivers down my spine every when I imagine what would have happened had we been going uphill instead...) and Josh managed to stop the car then drive it on the side of the road. He spent 3 hours fixing the trailer, no kidding. Meanwhile we were hanging out in the car on the side of the road. When we finally set off we were starving and tired and really looking forward to getting home in one piece.
It wasn't exactly the relaxing holiday we'd envisioned but a special time none the less. I'm sure the kids will enjoy hearing about our Christmas 2011 adventures on day.
So here we are two weeks later, 6 washing loads, house clean up and de cluttering. I've spent the last week clearing the workshop, getting rid of fabric scraps (20kg taken to the tip!), rubbish and unwanted fabric. A friend and I have organized a clothes swap this Sunday. Aaahh, finally some space, I feel inspired already!

No bake muesli bar

I recently made this nut bar, it's super simple and doesn't require any baking. Plus it's healthy...

No bake muesli bar:
-2 cups soaked sunflower and pumpkin seeds (soaked overnight)
- 1/2 cup sesame seeds
- 4 tbsp butter
- 4 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tbsp raw honey
- 1 cup dates (chopped)
- 1 cup crispy sunflower and pumpkin seeds (toasted until golden)

Mmm, yumminess!

Place soaked seeds in food processor, blend until mushy.
Meanwhile melt butter, coconut oil, honey and chopped dates on low heat. Leave for 10mn, then add to soaked seeds in blender. Blend some more.
add sesame seeds and crispy nuts, pulse until well blended.
Spoon mixture into a baking dish (aprox. 15x20cm), flatten well with the back of a spoon then place in the fridge for a few hours.
NOTE: I tend to add very little sweetness, so if you'd like it a bit sweeter, put 2tbsp of honey instead.

As you can tell, I only just managed to take a photo before the muesli was all gone. I just made another batch, so I will try to update the photo! I also added a pinch of cinnamon and ginger in it, just to spice it up a bit. This recipe could work with any blend of nuts too, just experiment with what you've got on hand!

Wow, it's actually happened. The days preceding the market were quite frantic, the weather forecast was terrible and there were a lot of last minute calls from people wanting a stall. We had to make sure it would all roll smoothly on the day. Come Saturday, and I lay in bed at 5.30 listening to the rain falling on our roof. Couldn't have been worse. Well yes it could have, there could have been lightning and thunder.

The car had been packed the night before, we got the kids up and took off.
When we got to the park, it was still raining, if somewhat lightly, I didn't think anyone else would turn up! The look of relief that must have been on my face when the first stall holder came to set up!
As it turns out, the rain stopped, most stall holders turned up (the ones that had gazebos mainly) and it ended up being a good morning for sales. We had lots of traffic from the Farmers' market and for a few hours it was very lively indeed. Unfortunately we had to cancel the old school merry-go-round, the grounds were too wet (and it does get boggy at the bottom of the park). It's a shame but hopefully next year we'll have more luck.
Yes, you read well, we're hoping to organize one next year. Josh has got big plans, and this time we've got a year to get ready!

Saturday is the big day for us, our first ever Christmas market!
I am hoping it will all run smoothly, the past week's been crazy busy, there has been so much interest and there are so many interesting crafts that are going to be on display, I can't wait to see them all!
Now, the only thing I can't really control is the weather of course, and I've been picturing a nice bright sunny day to send some positive thoughts out there.
So here's a couple of Odes to the sun, Sun hear me now, please show up on Saturday, it should be a fun day, there'll even be a good ol' merry go round!

Tahi's Bday present

I almost forgot to mention the (awesome of course) cap I made Tahi for his birthday. Not that he doesn't already have some, but he's been so fussy lately about what he wants to wear that nearly all 3 hats are in the "not cool" category. I had a 50/50 chance of his liking this one of course... So I made sure it was his favorite color of the moment (yellow) and we also had a look at two different hat designs so he could choose the one he liked. He had a choice between a boy's sunhat hat and an engineer cat. Guess which one he chose? The engineer one!

Both tutorials are pretty straight forward. With the engineer one there was even a pattern to download. I usually don't bother, mainly because it means I have to print something on paper, but this time I did, hats are quite tricky (for me anyway, my first and only attempt ended up in the scraps bin).

I used a tea towel found on Trademe that just happened to be the right color, as well as a cool design (even a throwback to Tahi's chinese descent, flash flash). The only thing I regret not using was some interfacing for the visor part. I used a scrap of coffee beans jute bag instead, thinking it would do the job. Don't try it, as soon as it's wet it takes the shape of whatever position you put it in, hence I will now have to iron it to try and make it straight again.

Otherwise it looks pretty cool in my opinion. Birthday boy was happy, put it on straight away and deemed it good enough to be a dancing hat. Yipee!

The kids had great fun playing musical chairs. Jade (a little 7 year old friend) lost her first tooth biting into a pita bread (homemade). The food was ace, everyone had a good feed. The weather was lovely and we all hung out on the deck and in the garden.

It seems all I have time to write about is what I make. And it's not looking like any extra time is coming my way any time soon. With 2 weeks and a bit before the Christmas market and a whole lot of new people wanting to book a stall, I'm busier than ever!

Hello! What am I?

Nice, roomy and cosy...

I spent quite a bit of time sewing last week though, and since making kids' clothes was going to take too much time, I decided to shift focus and make easy fast things with an emphasis on summer and picnics. I had a pile of vintage tea towels waiting for their turn... most of them ended up as cutlery holders, some others as snack bags. They came out great and had lots of success at the Art mart. So now I've got a couple of weeks to make a few more (and finish some custom orders).

With my first market of the summer a few days away, I am trying to get as much done as possible to get some sort of stock. As usual I've left to the last minute, and I've got very little left in the shop. It's too late to be making any clothing, so I've decided to start a new project... Hint: it's a very practical item that is a must have for anyone picnic inclined.

When you wish your town had a proper Xmas market but it hasn't? You organize one!
For two years I have been thinking it would be nice to have a Xmas market european style where you can find all sorts of crazy stuff and meet fun people. So I decided to give it a go this year, cross fingers it'll be a success! I've already had lots of interest which is great, and the market promises to display a great variety of goods.
This has meant I have had even less time to organize my own sewing madness and I haven't entered my workshop for days, but I'm hoping to get in there soon and sew up a storm... Yes well, life with two kids a garden and chooks and dog just wasn't busy enough.

Last night Josh helped me design the poster, it looks amazing I'm really happy with the result. I'm so lucky to have a lover who's a genius with photoshop! All going well, I'm getting some posters printed out next week and sticking them in all the windows in town!

The big egg

One of our chooks laid a 95g egg. Turns out it was a double yolker too!

We had some good friends visit last week, their son is 3 days older than Tahi. It was so nice catching up with them, after not seeing them for 2 years. We had a great time. They came to attend a hui at the community we have been involved with so we all went down and spent a couple of days there. The thought of having some people we know already join in is quite pleasing... what will happen next?
Unfortunately Josh and I are so lame we didn't even take one photo! Luckily our friends are more onto it, some I'll have some photos to post soon.
One another note, christmas is right around the corner and there are a couple of market coming up in Gisborne, one which I am organizing. It's called the "Gisborne Christmas market" - yes very original!- and will take place on the 17th of December. I"m quite excited about it, although it means I'm going to need to spend a bit more time in the sewing room. It probably also means I'll be late once again for family xmas presents... sigh.
Anyway, I will do my best and keep posting photos of anything that comes out of the workshop...

Wow, the past few weeks have been so full on, now I really understand what people mean by living life to the full. Just have two kids and lots of friends to visit and catch up with and a garden, some chooks and a sewing room and you're pretty close. I feel so lucky though, and I love where our family is at at the moment... Josh is finally starting to do some interesting stuff, and earning some money -sometimes- Tahi is just a delightful nearly four year old, great big brother (considering his age) and so smart. He's recently taken to building marble runs with blocks and is very talented. For one they actually work, and they are really inventive. He's also getting into music, and loves playing with the little guitar Josh found him at the tip. His favorite band is Queen, but he also likes Def Leppard, Autozamm (His uncle's band), T-Rex,... Anything with guitars and drums that plays fast. That's my boy.

Miro has just started shuffling, sitting up by himself and trying to crawl/ pull himself up. It feels like we went through 10 months of inertia and all of a sudden he's all over the place. He's is happy all the time and is so cute and fun, he loves his brother and is just all go all day. We took him to his first swimming lesson last week, he loved it!

Parenting is such a crazy, incredible eye opening adventure, I can't stop myself from wondering how I could be so lucky to have given birth to two such amazing beings, and I'm sure all the mums out there think the same. I feel blessed to have had this opportunity in my life.
Anyway, this is my creative space for this week: a snack bag! One of the on-my-list-for-ages projects. I used a coffee sack scrap (from another project hopefully soon to be finished), lined with organic fair trade cotton tee shirt (left over from my KowTow stash), put some velcro to close it. Pretty simple, Tahi loves it and it's easy to wash, no nasty plastic. I then decided to make a couple more for Tahi's little friends we visited over the week end. I tried using snaps, but I think I like velcro best.

How we move

When Miro was born I started looking for a bike trailer so I could take both kids along. We love it, and last week went for a picnic at the botanical gardens. Kids in the trailer, food and picnic blanket at the back and off we went! For the story, it ended up raining so we had lunch at a friend's, but we did go to the botanical gardens afterwards.

We're gearing up for summer at home as well, with a nearly there almost finished bathroom (a year after Josh first started taking it apart), and a new outdoors couch/ dog bed. The couch is in the corner of the deck that gets the most shade in summer and when sitting down you have a great view of Kaiti hill and our garden. Neat.

Yummy goodness from the garden, spring salad of broad beans, rocket, lettuce, celery leaves, avocado and haloumi (made using this recipe).

I also absolutely had to share this great juice recipe. A couple of weeks ago I went to a "know your weeds" workshop, held by Isla Burgess. It was a great introduction to knowing what "weeds" grow around us, I have been looking at our garden with a new eye. One recipe I tried and really love is a juice made with cleavers. Cleavers is a "weed" found in almost any garden here, and it seems to grow quite prolifically as well. It is full of good minerals, especially silica (which is what makes it "sticky"). While browsing to find a good photo of it, I found this website that also explains what the health benefits are. That much goodness and free to top it all, how could I resist.

The juice itself is really refreshing and tastes a bit like watermelon. I sometimes add a dash of honey, or just drink it as it is. I even tried it in a smoothie with banana and yoghurt, and Tahi liked it.

It's very easy to prepare, just grab a good big handful, put it in a pot with a bit of water at the bottom and pound it. The water turns dark green. I pour the liquid into a jar, fill it right up with water then add honey. Try it, you won't be disappointed!

Some upcycled board shorts for a little boy turning 3... Shirts are great for making kids' pants and shorts, they already have features like pockets and buttons and as a result the pants look like I spent a lot of time adding little details!

The fabric on this one is perfect for hot summer days, light and soft. I added a turquoise waist band and matching bias at the bottom to add some nice contrast. After making Tahi's board shorts last summer I fell in love with the style, it suits little boys so well!

OK, so I was expecting a bit more enthusiasm for bean bags, but hey, good for the 3 people who entered the giveaway! On another note, the All Black are world champions! Wow, well done, although I have to say the french played very well and probably better than the kiwis. As my friend said when I told them the french play better under pressure: "pressure makes diamonds". True that.
