Last Thursday evening, AB and I attended the Style with EDEN event at the Mandarin Oriental in DC for a little cocktail, chat and chew--and to learn more about the EDEN BodyWorks brand. Along with launching their new Coconut Shea Collection, EDEN BodyWorks brought together a panel of beauty, hair and style experts--including Kitiya Mischo King of MischoBeauty.com, Ashleigh Taylor of Taylor & York Salon and Monica Barnett of BluePrint4Style.com--to share conversation with and answer questions for attendees. The evening kicked off with remarks from brand founder, Jasmine Lawrence, and then moved into the panel discussion.

Event attendees got to see, touch and smell the products from the new collection, as well as received gift bags containing one full-size product. All the products smelled delicious and had great texture. I'll be giving the Edge Gel a try, since I do lots of bunning with my hair both when it's curly and when it's straight. In addition to the gift bags though, there were lots of good verbal takeaways:

Juicy Secrets That Will Help to Detox and Lose Weight | The Healthy Life

Okay, so it's not that much of a secret anymore: if done properly, juicing can help you to detox and to lose weight (mostly water weight). Properly is the operative word in the preceding sentence: what I've found through research is that it is paramount that you prep your body before juicing, that you are careful while juicing and that you re-integrate solid foods in the right way after juicing. Let's discuss.

I've been considering a juicing program for some time. I regularly include fruit & vegetable smoothies into my daily meal plan, often substituting them for breakfast or lunch meals. I also buy fresh juices from local health food cafes and have tried various pre-bottled versions from local health food grocers. These are my way of kind of easing into the idea of something like a 3-day juice cleanse.

A great alternative to juicing is blending smoothies. While you don't get the same volume of nutrients as juicing, this is still a good way to take in fruits and veggies--no matter the method they've got more nutrients while they're raw than after having been cooked. And you're also getting your alkaline, so this method is still a win.

I've researched a couple of juicing programs, like Organic Avenue and BluePrint Cleanse, as well as considered purchasing a juicer to do it myself at home (I've got my eye on this one because I've heard great things). The decision among these options is whether or not to pay for the convenience of having pre-made juices delivered directly to my home, or to save money by doing it myself. But in the mean time, I've been considering the type of lifestyle changes I might need to make to accommodate a juicing program. Here are the things I think it will be important to do.

Before
Prepare the sacrifice.
Our bodies require gradual change, or they act out in defiance and we get sick or feel overly tired. I'll want to allow my body time to adjust to my proposed juicing plan by giving it advanced warning. (You have to start to ween yourself off of heavy foods a few days prior to juicing--try light fruits, vegetables and salads or things like broth and applesauce that don't heavily coat the stomach.)

Plan the day.
I've found that my body feels hunger again pretty quickly when I'm only consuming liquids. I will need a solid (ha!) plan for having juiced meals at the ready on a constant basis. And, with what pre-made programs provide, I wonder if 6 per day would be enough...

During
In my experience, it's best not to work out in the first few days of any detox program. When I was doing the Whole30, I felt weak and lightheaded a lot during the first 3-4 days while my body was adjusting. So it stands to reason that the body would need to rest while doing a short term juicing program. (If you're like me and haven't done a juice detox before, you don't know how your body is going to respond and you may be weaker than when you are getting your nutrients from solid foods. If you HAVE to work out, try light cardio or stretching, but this is probably not the time to go hard core in the gym.)

After
Reintroducing foods after a detox is a tricky deal. It's so easy to get excited and eat too much or too heavily--and again, get sick. I always start small with fruits, applesauce and raw veggies, then graduate back up to my regular diet.

I've become majorly tuned in to my body due to years of food-induced pain and suffering. I've had to cut out a lot of food groups over the years, and have had to learn how to do that gradually in order for it to occur successfully. I've also learned not to jump feet first into any new cleanse or detox and to do lots of research first--then when I've gathered all the info I think I need, it's usually a quick leap to actually doing it.

I've seen great posts around the blogosphere from other ladies like: Natalie, Cece and Erika, who are doing/have done juice cleanses successfully, or who juice regularly at home in addition to their regular meal plans. I've also been finding Kris Carr of Crazy Sexy Diet to be an absolutely amazing resource on clean eating in general. Who knows, using her tips, I may not need a full juice detox as long as I keep my daily eating habits fairly clean.

I've found that one of the best ways to get creative, is to have a workspace by which you are inspired. Though I don't have an entire room dedicated to office space, I do have a sizeable master bedroom, and my workspace occupies one corner, next to the window and the gorgeous view of the woods outside.

AB found this beautiful desk for me on Craigslist after I published this post about my search for the perfect one for my home. I am especially fond of this one because within the glass top is the word "love", scripted in every language. Such a sweet sentiment and one of the words I live by, in that I try to approach everyone and everything I encounter with a loving attitude--especially my work.

After I got the desk it took me FOR-E-VER to find the right chair, but I finally have and it was a steal for $99 at Staples. Staples! Who would've guessed they'd have such a great piece? And with additional touches for organization and storage on my desktop, my workspace is feeling much closer to completion. Though I'll likely continue to add to and update the space (I'd like to add framed photos to the wall space above the desk), it's already a place I love waking up in the morning and sitting down in to work.

Field of Floral Dreams | Style Savvy Weekend Rewind

Have you ever put on a dress and immediately felt that you should be twirling in a field full of flowers? Yeah, me too--yesterday, when I zipped into this pretty floral number from the Prabal Gurung for Target Love Collection. Lucky for me, I was at my mom's house in the country where it was easy to make that floral laden vision a reality. It was so much fun hanging out in the sun, and so peaceful being surrounded by birds, bees and colorful buds. When I'm in nature--that's when I see God.

In the midst of the day, my Young Man and I managed to steal away for a little while and have some quiet quality time (and photo opp!), just the two of us, in this gorgeous little meadow. I am so grateful to be the Mother of such a loving, intellectually curious and fiercely independent son. In what can only be described as the sweetest text I have ever received from anyone ever in my lifetime, he shared that having me for a Mom is like having an at "home best friend 24/7". Well if that doesn't make it all worth it, I don't know what does.

Overall, my Mother's Day was as sweet as always. Our tradition is that my family heads to church with my Mom in the morning, then we treat her to an early dinner at the restaurant of her choice. We had so much fun laughing and recalling memories from when my younger brother and I were kids. I love spending time with my family, and especially celebrating my Mom, who is like a best friend to me too. Hope your Mother's Day was loving and magical as well.

Minor details can enhance even the simplest of items, and be the key differentiators between the way you wear or use something, and the way anyone else would. This month, my wish list is full of items that have really cool details, or that can be the major wow factor wherever they show up.

1. 'Merci' note cards ($24) – SugarPaper.com. I am a sucker for a personalized, handwritten card or note that’s penned on beautiful stationery; and I love to quote all the little French phrases I learned when I traveled to Paris last year. So obviously, I’m in love with these “Merci” notes on pale pink paper with gold foil—they are a dream to be wrapped in matching foil lined dot envelopes.

2. ‘Clyde’ Marblewood glasses frames ($95) – Warby Parker. I’ve been flirting with these cool marblewood frames ever since I posted about them a few months ago. I’m finally going to order the Warby Parker home try-on kit to see how they’ll look on me!

3. Golden chevron drinking glasses ($48, set of 4) – C. Wonder. I love the look of these gold chevron glasses at C. Wonder. Drinks feel like more fun when they’re served in great glassware, don’t you think? These will be the perfect vehicle for servings of cool cucumber/ginger water and fresh squeezed lemonade.

The FashionEASTa Files | Posh Event Recap

The pumping baselines of songs like 'Gundam Style', JT's 'Suit and Tie' and varying reggae sounds flowed through the streets of the Harbor East section of downtown Baltimore, as the fruits of labor of the Bradshaw Styling team floated down a summery white runway on Aliceanna Street during the 2013 FashionEASTa Fashion Show (click here for my recap of the 2012 show).

Loose, light fabrics for both comfort and style in the warmer months to come were the theme of the day, appearing in the form of sheer tops and maxi dresses for women, and shorts and pants for men.

In women's trends, wide belts made waist hugging appearances on many of the dress and skirt styles. And where (ever seasonally present) prints were concerned, it was all about florals, florals and more florals. Pastel + metallic combos were a fresh sighting (and are a major "must try" on my style list), and menswear inspired straw fedoras juxtaposed against otherwise ultra feminine adornments hinted at another trend that will continue year over year.

Men's casual dress had a preppy vibe, with the guys turning up in blazers + jeans combos, khakis and seersucker--but in bright colors of neon and pastel: lavender, mint green and even a rather electric orange.

Sportswear styles were shown as well, encouraging the crowd to get their workout on in style as the temperatures heat up.

The best part about the styles shown on the runway is that they are currently available at Harbor East stores and boutiques including South Moon Under, Urban Chic, White House | Black Market, Lululemon, J. Crew and others. I'm looking forward to shopping these styles in the coming weeks!

Pink Sunday | Style Savvy Weekend Rewind

My weekend was really good in that "nothing big" sort of way, do you know what I mean? I had a hair appointment, ran lots of errands, watched a movie, started Dexter Season 1 on Showtime On Demand (O.M.G. what a great show!), drank some Skinnygirl Margarita in honor of Cinco de Mayo (which I don't celebrate, but thought it a great excuse to try the Skinnygirl Margarita), drank a glass of wine (because the Skinnygirl Margarita was too sour for my taste), and had the best time with friends on Sunday at GG's in celebration of her oldest's birthday. And this is where the pink jeans come in. These little American Eagle cropped skinnies are so stretchy and so comfy and so perfect for a casual Sunday afternoon. I still have that issue where I think my thighs look massive in pants, but I adore these jeans for all that they are (instead of being sad about what they are not, which is sprinkled with magical thigh reducing fairy dust) and I love love love the way this casual outfit came together. I'm also finding that these little Prabal Gurung for Target pumps are crazy versatile! I've worn them with a red dress, with green jeans, and now pink jeans--and some other things that I can't recall, but I know they are on my feet at least twice per week.

And now here we are at Monday, the start of a new week. I am in full day meetings for the full time gig on 3 out 5 days this week so it will be a busy one. I hope you're looking forward to yours, whatever it holds. Happy Monday, Lovies. Let's do this.

Getting Nauty with Stripes + A Pop of Pink | Style Savvy Weekend Rewind

On Saturday, The Young Man and I hung out in the Harbor East neighborhood downtown for their 2nd annual FashionEASTa event. It's a block party style affair with a fashion show (recap to come this week!) food vendors from neighborhood restaurants and lots of shopping discounts. I was feeling low key so I slipped on jeans and this old-ish, but impossibly comfortable navy and white striped nautical-inspired sweater from Forever 21. My hair was kind of dirty so I just pulled it into a bun, added some pink accessories to my jeans and top and I was out the door to enjoy the sunshine. We amused ourselves for a couple of hours with people watching and treats from Haagen Dasz. A sweet, and relaxed afternoon was just what the doctor ordered. And now, a new week begins--here's hoping it brings good things for us all. Happy Monday.

Posh Weekend Plans + Weekly Link Wrap Up {vol. 15}

Happy Friday! Hope you have made the most of this past week, and taken a few more baby steps towards your goals. I finally finished by business plan (yay!)--late, but I'm proud to have finally completed it, and ecstatic to have a tangible outline to which I can hold myself. Doesn't accountability feel good? This weekend I will be checking out the FashionEASTa Fashion Show in Harbor East downtown (you can see my recap of last year's event here), and attending a fundraising event. The weather is supposed to be gorgeous so I am looking forward to relishing in temps + sunshine that feel like spring proper.

So before we head into the weekend, I would love to share some of my work, as well as my favorite discoveries from the week!

I am really giddy about the hot pink lip that has already begun popping up for spring and summer, and I think I may just invest in one of the ones mentioned here at the COCOTIQUE tumblr.

There was an uber informative post over at Gala Darling on body language and what we could be unconsciously communicating when we are speaking to people, or in meetings or networking situations. Read on to see if you are guilty of any of these things or if you are a master of your unspoken communication. (This is especially good stuff for my fellow bloggers.)

I looooooved loved loved loved this beautifully designed living room makeover. It is perfection in the bursts of color everywhere, with the layering of design and texture, and clean furniture items like tables and bookcases acting as anchors to make this a wonderfully well-balanced look.

In catching up on one of my favorite style blogs, Karla's Closet, dreams of summer were incited by an ultra feminine look with a lacy white dress and strappy gold sandals. I have been on a hunt for the perfect gold sandal since March, and I adore flowy white dresses in distinctly summer fabrics, so this look is perfection, IMO.

And finally, my most favorite recent discovery is The Honest Toddler. This fictitious toddler has a very adult vocabulary and isn't afraid to use it! Both the blog and twitter account are hilariously funny.

The Anatomy of a Great Salad | Healthy Life

I have always loved a great salad. Even as a child I inhaled vegetables—hot or cold—so salads were right up my alley. And people were always impressed with how many ingredients I could add or how colorful and fresh my homemade salads always looked. Though the content of what I include has changed as I’ve gotten older (I used to mix French and Ranch dressings. Ew!), I still get lots of compliments on how yummy my salads look. And they ARE, in fact, pretty delicious. But what’s more important for me now is that they are super healthy. There are a few components that can make a salad both really yummy and really good for you at the same time.

This is what the anatomy of a great salad looks like to me:

Fresh Greens

I prefer dark leafy greens: arugula, spinach, kale, mixed greens, and baby spring mix. It’s also good to add as many healthy green veggies as possible, like cucumber, broccoli, green pepper, brussels and cold peas.

Vibrant color

I love to add lots of color to my salads—it makes them pretty and makes them pop! I tend to lean towards bright orange, red and yellow peppers, rich red cranberries, strawberries, deep blue blueberries, red or green apples and even the whitish brown of mushrooms. Mandarin oranges and watermelon are also reeeeeallly great in the summer.

Texture
It’s a beautiful thang when a salad has a little crunch. Often darker greens are softer--even when they are fresh (except for kale), so I get that great texture in the form of nuts and seeds. I love to add walnuts, sliced almonds, pecans and pumpkin seeds.

Protein

It is important to make sure you’re getting as many of the nutrients your body needs as possible in a salad (especially if you practice a vegetarian or vegan diet), so protein is key. Here is where a yummy nutrient dense fruit like an avocado can come in handy. If you’re a Vegetarian who consumes dairy, a boiled egg is a great addition; a Pescetarian like myself could add chunks of tuna or grilled salmon. And for the Carnivores, grilled chicken or lean turkey slices are good options.

To top off my salads, I’ll usually use a light vinaigrette—Ken’s Lite Options and Newman’s Own Raspberry Walnut salad dressing are my current faves. Or I’ll do a simple olive oil & lemon juice, or olive oil & vinegar mix and season with salt and pepper. Feel free to get creative with mixing your own dressings! That is always better than pre-bottled. Worth noting: there is no cheese listed in any of these notes, though I know it’s added to a lot of salads. I’ve slowly stopped consuming dairy (outside of eggs) pretty much ever since I completed the Whole30 and realized how much better my skin behaves when I leave it out of my diet (fewer pesky flares of eczema). Dairy is not so good for us for a number of reasons, which you can read about here or here if you’re interested in learning more.

Say Yes to the Dressing Room {5 Posh tips for Trying on Clothing}

Trying on clothing before making a purchase can be frustrating and time consuming, but for many women it is necessary. I am one such woman. Depth and quality of fabric, the cut of the waist/hip areas and length are all major problems for me—and clothes can appear much different on the hanger than they do on a real body. So since saying “yes” to the dressing room experience is essential, I try to prepare myself by putting a few things in place to make it a little more pleasant. And I’d love to share them with you, to encourage you to say yes to the dressing room as well.

Here are 5 posh tips for trying on clothing:

1. Come prepared

Wear (or bring along) any support garments (Spanx, hose/tights, slips etc) that you’ll want to wear under your garment—particularly if you are shopping for dresses for events like cocktail parties or weddings. You’ll also want to wear the type of shoe you plan to wear with the garment (heels, flats, wedges), so you can see exactly what it will look like when you get home. This way there is no guess work, and you can look forward to fewer returns that occur because you bought something, then got home and realized that smoothing garment didn't quite work in the way that you'd hoped; or the maxi was still too long even with your highest heel (#shortpeopleproblems).

2. Skip the extras

Wear clothing that's easy to get in and out of, since struggling with layers, difficult zippers or hard to reach buttons adds major time to your dressing room experience. You can try on potential new clothes faster when you can get easily in and out of your own.

3. Bring the pretty

Often, when you look good, you feel good about yourself too. Style your hair and makeup so that you feel pretty and confident, whatever that means to you.

4. Bring Reinforcements

Why not bring a friend along while shopping and make a day of it? You'll have an immediate source for feedback, saving you some of the time you would spend studying your angles and going back and forth in your head. And if you are someone who dreads shopping in person, you have tackled it all at once and you won’t have to do it again for at least a season.

5. Get all the angles

First, take pictures. Cher Horowitz got it right in Clueless when she said that mirrors lie. Depending on how they are made and positioned, or the lighting in the dressing room, every mirror can tell you a different narrative about your appearance. But the camera lense is consistent (photos are also helpful for that 2nd friendly opinion if you have to shop alone. Send them to a friend whose opinion you trust and get a 2nd eye). Second, if you don't happen to have your smart phone with you, or can't get a clear photo, step out of the dressing room and get a glimpse in the 3-way mirror positioned at the end of the row of dressing rooms for a 2nd (and 3rd and 4th) angle. If you can--and feel comfortable doing so, step out into the regular store area for a brief moment and check a nearby mirror there--you'll have an opportunity to see what you look like in different lighting, as opposed to just the lighting in the dressing room.

These tips don't have to be limited to the dressing room; you can try these same tricks at home as well. When you are shopping your closet for new and inspired ways to put your pieces together, try them on with your desired undergarments; don’t be afraid to ask whomever lives in your home for their opinions; choose a time of day when you’re either getting dressed or undressed so that your hair and makeup are as they would be in the potential outfit; and get a glimpse of yourself in different lighting throughout your home.

5 Ways to Wear Your Dresses as Skirts or Tops | Restyle Your Closet

So often women say "I don't have anything to wear", when staring at a closet full of clothing--and I am absolutely guilty of this as well. The trick is to become an expert at seeing pieces differently, and learning to rock them in unexpected ways. You can totally shop your closet and get 3x the wear out of a single piece when you wear your dresses as skirts and tops. Layering them is the easiest way to shop your closet and create additional looks you'll love.

This may not work with every single dress you own, but it will work with many of them. You just have to play around with proportions to see what works and what doesn't. (Yes, try on your clothing. It's not a process that ends in the dressing room, as daunting as that can be. We'll talk more tips on that tomorrow!)

5 ways you can restyle your favorite dresses as skirts or tops:
1. Wear a looser top like a mens' shirt or a chunky knit sweater over a fitted or straight dress. With the volume on top, you'll want to keep the fabric close to your body on the bottom. Finish with a fantastic pair of heels. I did something similar here with a denim top, belted over a slim dress.
2. Wear a more fitted top over an A-line dress, or one that flares at the bottom, like I did here. Pulling on a sleeveless top, then adding a sweater and a belt gave one of my favorite dresses an entirely new look as a flirty skirt.
3. Wear a blouse over a sheath dress to give the appearance of a pencil skirt and top, like I did here. Notice the top is versatile enough to wear over a dress, and with jeans. Or, for the same silhouette, tuck your favorite summer tank dress inside a pencil skirt--like Emily of Cupcakes and Cashmere did in the photo above. Wear bare shouldered for a night out, or add a blazer for a conservative office environment.
4. For a really modern look, make a play on peplum by donning it over a long maxi or body conscious dress a la Folake of Style Pantry.
5. Tuck your dress into jeans or slacks, or if the material will allow, just scrunch it up to hip length, like the clever look on Kela of Kela's Kloset above. If you're not quite comfortable that your secret is safe, add a blazer like she did, or a pretty cardigan to help complete the look.

Last weekend, my cousins and I threw my mom a 60th birthday party. After months of planning, 'Pattie's 60th Soiree' was a sweet success, if the huge smile on my mom's face was any indication--not to mention the beautiful sunny weather and the gorgeous scenery on the water. The girls and I chose little black dresses as our soiree attire, and added floral pins to denote our status as the event planners. I went with a simple satin sheath with ruffled collar, and added color in mint green and blue via accessories. The 2-color suede pumps are a recent acquisition and made their debut just for the party. They are totally my new favorite shoe for spring. Thanks to my awesome dad for being the event photographer--and for my personal shoot for the blog!

April Wish List: Perfect Pastels

With the sun finally warming us beyond 70 degrees for the past couple of weeks, it's starting to really feel like the season has shifted to spring. Cue cravings in overdrive for color--particularly light and cool pastels on everything from freshened decor and sweet nail color, to flirty clothing and fun footwear. These are some of the items that fit the bill.

1. Square hi-gloss swoon tray ($30) - CB2. This glossy serving tray will work wonderfully in tandem with the new orange and turquoise based decor on my balcony. It's perfect for use as table top decor or for transporting dishes to and from the kitchen.

2. butterLONDON nail lacquer in 'Fiver' and 'Molly Coodle' ($15 each) - South Moon Under. A girl can never have too many minty green or light purple shades for spring. In fact, having multiple similar shades of the same colors makes for awesome nail art and mixing and matching.

3. Custom chevron case for iPhone 4s ($40) - Etsy.com. I'm totally enamored with the girly feel of this pink custom iPhone case, and the chevron ombre is spot on-trend. Anything that can be monogrammed is also a big plus in my book.

4. Pixel pointed high heels ($66) - Asos.com. Colorblocked + mint green & nude + Mary Jane style straps + pointy toe + patent = * swooooon * These darling heels would be the perfect complement to a little white dress and my mint envelope clutch.

5. Metallic origami playsuit ($110) - Topshop. This shorts romper has a sophisticated look that indicates it will work for more than play. I love the rich look of the textured fabric and pleated detail; and the defined waist seam makes it an ideal companion for curves.

From Work Wear to Casual Chic | Restyle Your Closet

A friend recently transitioned from a corporate working environment to a work-at-home situation, and said that all of her "work clothes" are now pushed to the back of her closet, out of sight. I have always had an issue separating "work clothes" from "casual clothes" because I tend to see endless opportunities for mixing and layering in my closet. Of course there are moments where I keep the two decidedly separate, but making the transition for work wear into the world of casual chic is totally doable.

The easiest piece to transition from work wear to casual chic is the button down shirt. As shown above, it is endlessly versatile: layer a button down shirt beneath a thin sweater, then add tailored shorts and casual shoes for a smart weekend look; or keep it paired with its office twin--the blazer--but add cropped slacks in a bright color and smoking slippers (which are a majorly on trend transition shoe to take you from winter into spring) for more of a preppy vibe than a corporate one.

The denim or chambray shirt is a wonderfully deliberate way to make dressier items feel casual. As in the photos above, wear it with a dressier pant to create an ensemble that has a laid back vibe; or layer one over your favorite sheath dress, belt it and add a sexy sandal--making it more appropriate for drinks than your desk.

I also love the idea of using printed button down tops and pussybow blouses paired with colored jeans rather than slacks. With the addition of pumps, you've given your denim a sophisticated and modern vibe; and created a look that reads "put together" but not "corporate".

Posh Weekend Plans + Weekly Link Wrap Up {vol. 14}

Happy Friday!! I am looking forward to a half day at the full time gig today, and being treated to lunch by the company at the same restaurant where I had my birthday dinner last month. They have the tastiest menu so this will be a treat. My Honey will also be arriving in town this afternoon, and then tomorrow he, The Kid and I are traveling to my parents' neck of the woods for my Mom's 60th birthday celebration. I've been planning it with her for several months so it will be nice to see all our hard work come to fruition and to see her have a great time. And it will be fun to get some quality time with extended family and friends of the family. I'm sure you have some wonderful things planned as well--especially since the weather for us East Coasters will be mild and mostly sunny. Before we embark on weekend plans, I'd love to share some of the awesome things I've come across on the web this week that I think you might kind of love too.

I stumbled upon this all-natural recipe for Strawberry Ice Cream on Pinterest; it feels like a 'must-try'. I am all for the idea of sweet treats without all the extra toxic, fatty ingredients. Why not give it a practice whirl this weekend so you'll be a pro once summer rolls around?

- Who What Wear laid out some ideas (via celebrity photos) on how to stay stylish at the gym, which was right on time for me. As I've been working out 4-5 days / week for the past couple of weeks (yay consistency!), I find that desire to look and feel good becoming stronger.

- Dominique of Stiletto Esq. got into the spirit of spring with bold color via a shirt dress and sandals.

- and Ashley at Pursuit of Shoes made me envious of the gorgeous weather in Catalina in this pretty coral keyhole dress with cognac sandals (and a massive bun, which ya'll know mama loves).

I was over-the-moon to get to "chat" with Natalie Live for The Tiny Closet about her work, her style and her "Tiny Closet" (as well as a few bonus treats about her hair, her clothing line and those pairs of shoes, which you'll have to head over to the Pish Posh Perfect Facebook page tomorrow to read!). Natalie Live / The Tiny Closet

This (photo above) was one of my first blog posts and back when I was really experimental with my hair. I was also really engaged with how my hair could really influence my styles and ensembles that I put together. I wasn't shopping at all at the that time and found changing my hair also changed my clothing (even if I was wearing the same things). - Natalie

What is your full time gig?

My full time gig is working for my husband actually. He owns Media Design Elements and is a freelance photographer and videographer.

How does your occupation—accompanied with any other varying roles and endeavors--affect your personal style? And how do you transition your wardrobe throughout the day to meet the needs of these various roles?

My taste affects my personal style :) Nothing else. Every role that I play is my personal style - or else I wouldn't do it. I want to be comfortable and attractive always so for each role or event that I have, style blogging, dinner with my husband, cleaning the house, running errands, brunch with my girlfriends, I dress the part as the aesthetic I want to bring out. One major way I transition throughout the day though is making sure all of my outfits match a flat AND a heel. So that I'm not stuck for the day in either one!

This outfit became pretty popular on Tumblr and brought me a lot of traffic and wonderful encouragement. I was pretty proud of my coordination and I was also very in shape then and had bought these coral pants in celebrating my hard work in getting fit.

What is the one piece in your entire wardrobe right now that you absolutely cannot live without?

My tees that I created. They are part of the Tiny Closet Collection and they're perfect for me. I can wear them with heels or beat up chucks since the fabric is versatile and they have an amazing drape and feel!

When thinking about what you’ll wear in the morning, do you prefer to go for style or function?

I go for both. Who doesn't want to be functional in their clothing?? Style over function is just not me - I want to be able to run or pick up my phone when I drop it, or not get the flu because my jacket was made to look cute instead of keep me warm, you know? Buuuut, I do want to be cute. So all of my clothes are aesthetically pleasing to me and they also each serve a useful function. Even my wedding dress was functional!

What are your favorite colors or textures to incorporate into your wardrobe or home decor?

This was my first post I did while traveling through the Philippines. My opinion on my own style and clothing in general was changing every day and I think that's when I really began feeling free with my choices and just wearing anything I damn well pleased. Sunny and happy times.

For clothing, I love pops of tropical, bright and jewel tone colors like fuchsia, cobalt, and yellow. I also love leather, cashmere and silk jersey. For interior design, I love harbor blue, crisp white, linen colors, ash browns, fur, high gloss finishes, I could go on...

The premise of your blog is based around your Tiny Closet, and the ability re-wear pieces multiple times, but in new and fresh combinations. So how often do you go shopping?

So for the first year of my blog, I had gone shopping maybe 6 times. And on average, I would spend between $10 and $40. So in 12 months, I had gone shopping 6 times. It was haaarrrrddd. At first. Then I realized how interchangeable my clothes could be and I could literally reinvent them every day so I didn't feel like I had to go shopping all that much. Currently I shop once a month but it's usually at the fabric store. My taste is way too fancy to be buying the things I love at a store so I make a lot things myself now.

When you do shop, what’s your favorite place to score super cute budget-friendly pieces?

Anthropologie always has amazing sales. Amazing. The Value Village on Capitol Hill in Seattle is dear to my heart and hands down ALWAYS has something I adore for under $10. Now that I live in downtown L.A., I am loving the clothing stands in the garment district. Vintage finds here are amazing. Oh - and Zara and T by Alexander Wang. Zara is phenomenal and I live in T by Alexander Wang.

I love this outfit because it's so boyish and charming but a bit edgy and urban. I had started to bring more dynamic into my wardrobe focusing on androgynous looks with my clothing. I turned my whole closet around with that change in perspective.

What 5-10 key pieces would you recommend other women get if they’re trying to build their own “tiny” trimmed down closets with a simple foundation of just a few quality items?

A Tiny Closet is all about the woman and what works for her. I formed my little wardrobe through exploring my interests and also by trying on lots of different clothes to see what I like. The foundational pieces I need in order to have a simple Tiny Closet are very different than that of another woman's needs. I have read allllllll the books and mags and blogs about "10 pieces every woman should own"... it doesn't work. It made me think I had to buy those things to be stylish. To be a woman. To feel complete about my closet. It didn't allow me to really think for myself and let my true interests guide me. Once I cut out all the outside noise of people telling me what to wear, I discovered harem pants (a key piece in my closet), I also discovered muumuus (another foundational staple). I have 6 pairs of harem pants and 4 muumuus and I wear them all. Would I recommend them as key items to others? No. What I do recommend is to go in your closet and try on every single item you own. If you love, keep it. Don't love it? Toss it. Once you're finished, try wearing the clothing you have left. For a while. Then assess what you need to complement/improve upon what you already have. That is The Tiny Closet.

Where do you go for lifestyle inspiration?
I go to the fabric store. Michael Levine's Fabrics. It is incredibly inspiring. I also go to Virgo, an indie clothing boutique in downtown. I religiously follow Karla's Closet blog as well as Remain Simple and Veronica Loves Archie blogs. Stunning photos that I stare at for hours and I end up with a universe of ideas when I'm finished.

You’ve noted before that your husband has great style, and has helped you to cultivate your own; what’s the best piece of style advice he has ever given you?

This shoot was purely fictitious and I had a ball that day playing dress up and pretending I was some exquisite Parisian woman at a cafe. I got the dress out of necessity for an important cocktail party for work while on a business trip. I am dying to have a need to wear it again!

He tells me to do my thing and just rock what I got most of the time. He's liking my style a lot more nowadays as it becomes more individual. He hates normal. Sometimes, he looks at me and says "it needs more" and I throw up my arms in exasperation saying, what more do you want?! LOL! He's so funny - sometimes I try really hard to impress him because he has such unique, cool taste.

Event Recap: Luster “You Be-Natural” Meet Up {AB Guest Post}

Last Thursday, I was invited to attend the inaugural Luster “You Be-Natural” meet up. The meet up was to introduce the attendees to Luster’s new all natural conditioning and strengthening hair system. The new hair system is a Keratin treatment that contains protein and DOES NOT have any formaldehyde or thioglycolates.

It was a great informal event, which was highly informative. There were many high level Luster Products, Inc executives in attendance who connected with each of the attendees. We had the pleasure of meeting Theresa Luster and Lory Luster, President and CEO of Luster Products, Inc. who both shared the family’s vision of the brand and new product line. We also had the pleasure of meeting the technical expert and hairstylist for Luster, Kevin, who was very knowledgeable on the product.

I will admit that I have been skeptical and not quite sold on the effectiveness of natural Keratin treatments. I have heard so many horror stories from people with Keratin treatments that I put up a big wall where they are concerned. However, after this event, I must say I am more inclined to try this product. Kevin facilitated demos on two young ladies at the meet up, each with a different texture of hair; one model kept her hair curly and the other kept her hair straight. The process seemed fairly easy, yet a bit time consuming. HOWEVER, the results seemed well worth it. I witnessed both models comb through their hair with such ease--and the model with straight hair was able to blow her hair dry in 3 minutes and 45 seconds. AMAZING!!

The model who wore her hair straight looked incredible – her hair was shiny, full of body, and super straight. The model with the curly hair looked great as well – her hair was shiny, her curls elongated, and well defined.

Spring 2013 Trend Guide: What You Should Buy Now

Now that you've adequately cleaned your closet and begun to prep your wardrobe for spring, it's time to decide which of the fun trends you'll want to incorporate into your closet for the new season. There are many, and you don't have to (nor should you) toss on every single one, but it can be fun to try them on for size and see which ones fit into your personal style aesthetic. Here are some of the options from which you can choose!

Go Green {Mint + Emerald}

Gorgeous greens are so in for spring, with emerald green being the color of the year, and mint continuing to be a pastel Du jour. (p.s. Statement necklaces are sticking around as well--particularly, the long bubble styles--adore!)

Black and White

Black and white appears to trend every season, yet designers keep coming up with fresh ways to present it. This season the duo appears in wide stripes, bold color blocked combinations and graphic prints.

Colored Denim

I was not personally a believer in this trend until I tried an uber comfy pair of green jeans from H&M. The fabric in some colored jeans is a bit softer and more malleable than regular denim and they feel great on. So I am happy I get another season to wear them (and to acquire more!) They're a fun way to add color to even the simplest attire.

Graphic Pants Suits

Celebs and models, including Solange (above) have been getting all matchy matchy in graphic print pants suits. It's certainly an eye catching way to punch up the classic pairing. Note: you may want to save the full suit for a glamorous evening out; make this look more appropriate for a conservative office by wearing the pants and jacket separately.

Polka Dots

Get spotty again this season with polka dots! I think dots are so much fun--especially when rocking a little 'dot on dot' print combo as pictured above. They're awesome for spring attire, but for spring home decor and accents as well!

Florals

Florals continue to be SO in for spring, but 2013's floral prints are big, bold and graphic. Try toning them down with a solid color if full-on floral feels like too much.

Posh Weekend Plans + Weekly Link Wrap Up {vol. 13}

With another week (almost) in the rearview, I am looking forward mostly to crashing after work with a bottle of white wine, my favorite sushi and a movie. Brain. shut. off. But the rest of the weekend will be spent bonding with my Mom as we prepare for her 60th birthday party next weekend. So I'm looking forward to picking up final touches while envisioning how everything is going to come together. I hope you are looking forward to your weekend plans as well (feel free to share them in the comments), but I of course have a few suggestions for passing the time, if I may?

GLITTERRINGS had the pleasure of sparkling at the premiere of ABC's Dancing with the Stars a couple of weeks ago, and we've recapped the stars having a little fun trying things on (there was a "marriage proposal" involved).

I was mentioned last week at Words & Wardrobes as one of 100 Brown Girls Blogging. This was such a super sweet surprise, and while I already read many of the blogs that were listed, there were several I wasn't aware of (including one right here in Baltimore). So I would definitely encourage you to peruse the list and see what new 'sites to love' you might discover!

There are always wonderful lessons for living The Simply Luxurious Life at Shannon's blog of the same name, but this post from last week was right on time for me. The busier I get, the more important it is to remember to breathe and be present with whatever I am working on or whatever leisure I am enjoying. I think this is a great reminder for all of us, no matter what's on our respective plates.

Last week's Net-A-Porter update was full of romance, with Rosario Dawson (page 9) showcasing some of spring's more whimsical trends in that uber cool bohemian glam way that she has about her. She also opened up a bit about her personal life, which was a nice "peek" into what fuels her. She is one of my favorite actresses to watch.

On St. Patty's Day, I tried this raw kale and avocado pesto recipe over whole wheat pasta and it was ridiculously, amazingly good! And It took less than 10 minutes to whip up. I would absolutely recommend you try it if you have some time this weekend--you'll be delighted to find a perfect light option for spring and summer meals.
