To help avoid these types of injuries, it is also good to warm up and practice twisting quickly without using only your knee for the leverage. Try to use the ball of your foot to rotate, move/slide your feet actively with every turn and not rely solely on your knees to change direction. Wearing a knee guard is a sound preventative measure since it will absorb some of the shock of any fall or collision.

Shin Injuries

Kicks to the shins can cause fractures of the tibia - plain and simple. He filled our need and accepted his role in the interests of the team. We wish him well as he forms his new team with his group of high school buddies," said Romerinho.

Conrad was a quick, aggressive, player who unfortunately lost many games due to injury. Though the least experienced on the squad, he was quick to learn the fundamentals, and brought unending stamina and work ethic to field. Though offered a spot on the Pistolas FC team in 2010, he declined in order to join his friend Stefan on the expansion team. With the defenders PFC has coupled with plenty of midfielders, Conrad would have been a striker this year - a position he's been wanting.

"Conrad is a player who can only get better. We're losing a fit player with speed, and hard play. He was never afraid to clash with the opponent going in hard for a ball. It would've been nice to see his speed at work playing striker, and I'm sure he would've relished the goal scoring opportunities. But we respect his decision to remain with his friend Stefan, and wish him well on their new team."

"Though this new rivalry begins, we've had the pleasure of playing with this young guys and look forward to a friendly, cordial, matchup. Circle that date on your calendars!"

As soon as the schedule comes out, we'll let you know just what game it is.

Till then, stay tuned.

High Flying Pistolas FC Los Angeles Enters Final Semester Of The Season

LOS ANGELES - With the bugs worked out, (cross your fingers), the Pistolas FC Los Angeles website is back in business, with a full rundown of their season so far.

With 21 games on the schedule, the season is broken into three semesters, each 7 games. The loss of life, the injured and suffering, and the emotional, traumatic scars of loved ones and friends who survived, truly require the human race to bond together and if anything provide whatever help and healing we can.

Unfortunately, it is also the time when those less thoughtful, try to take advantage of the fundraising efforts under way as a means of cashing in.

Therefore, Pistolas FC is imploring all staff, players and fans alike to donate to the two most reputable agencies dealing with the crisis: UNICEF and the RED CROSS.

Even if you've already donated, every bit helps and a second donation - regardless of the amount - can make a difference. The initial worldwide fundraising was just the start, as efforts to rebuild the country will continue for years to come.

So please click on either of the two links below and make a donation.

Thank-You.

PFC Soccer Tips and Training Tools - V.4 - Attack

A player must always be aware that, with team possession of the ball, you are always involved in the offensive attack. Regardless of where the play is at any given time, offense requires improvisation and creativity, which means the play may reach you at any time.

Here are some key factors in establishing a consistently dangerous offensive attack, which should be incorporated in the grand scheme of building up to a goal.

Short Passing

When passing to a marked player, you should pass the ball in the opposite direction of his marker. Beyond this, as the passer, you should also consider that you are responsible for leading your teammate both away from danger and, more importantly, in the direction the play is being envisioned to proceed to (i.e. leading him in a direction whereby he can run onto more space and gain field with possession -or- towards a teammate that he can comfortably pass onto, extending the play forward, etc.).

Of course, the closer to goal, the shorter the passes will normally become. As less time is afforded to the recipient of the pass in or around the goal area (based on an increased defensive presence that will arise), a well placed pass can afford the receiving player much needed time and space, leading potentially to a proper chance on goal and/or direct him to the next passing opportunity (i.e. give and go, etc.).

For the recipient player, he should always be moving towards the ball, not away from it. This is even more essential when being marked, as the opposing player may attempt to cut in front and intercept. Moving towards the ball and 'shielding' the direction that the opposing player is moving in from will keep you from being dispossessed.

Overlapping

If there is free space away from the ball carrier, players should attempt to incorporate the overlap. When used on the wing (the overlapping player will pass the ball carrier up field, the overlap is very difficult to cover for defenders. When executed across the width of the field (the overlapping player will pass the ball carrier to the left/right), the overlap usually spreads apart the defence. Both examples of overlapping would most likely result in confusion for the defenders and open up more space for the offense to operate.

Distributing the Ball

Players should always survey the area in or around the opposing defenders, including the space between the enemy defenders and their own goal. It is highly advantageous to play the ball in open space (rather than target passing, as it is unusually difficult for the opposing defenders to recover. The best way to use an outside angle is by making an overlapping run, timing to get behind the defence on-side. The creativity and chemistry between the passer and any prospective recipient is key, in understanding where the passer wants to go with the ball and where the prospective recipient is looking to move to. As well, always being aware of potential passing lanes makes it easier for the passer to distribute effectively. Off the ball, an offensive player's top priority should be to be moving into proper passing lanes, which are ever-changing.

In the Attacking Zone

If the strikers on your team are being marked by the last line of defenders, there are two essential plans of attack to score off of. The more controlled option for the striker is to check down toward the ball for a simple target pass. However, the more direct approach for goal is for the striker to head forward. With the offside rule limiting the ability to simply run off, the ball has to be played over the striker first. Depending on the striker's speed and angle to goal, the ball should be targeted to a spot whereby the striker can run onto the ball before any defender and goalkeeper can. The striker should start running toward the area behind the line of defenders slightly before the ball leaves the foot of the passer. The enemy defenders may be caught off guard and, further, their recovery requires them to turn at many angles (even 108 degrees) to regain their ground; a clear advantage to the offense. Possibly more than with any other distribution of the ball, this play will require a certain level of chemistry to effectively utilize and avoid the linesman's flag being constantly raised. Almost an unspoken sense of what each other is trying to accomplish without tipping off the defence to your intentions.

Crossing the Ball

In situations when the ball is out on the flanks, away from optimal scoring zones, the ball should be crossed to a place where a better scoring opportunity can be gained. It is widely recognized that the ideal spot for a cross is in the area between the penalty spot and the 6 yard line. By crossing to this area, you will force the enemy keeper to come out of the goal, while allowing your teammates to be close enough to goal for a header or shot. It is important to note that the when heading into the area a player should stay outside of the penalty box until the ball carrier delivers the cross. This makes the opposite defenders' role more difficult as they have to simultaneously follow both the moving ball and the player being marked. The proper runs by those receiving the crosses should essentially be comprised of a near post run. The first player that arrives in the penalty area should go towards the post of the side the cross is entering from) and subsequently, the second man in should go to the far post. The remaining players should proceed to ensure staggering between each other and the goal.

These techniques when used properly result in a potent offensive attack and endless headaches for any opposing team.

Retired PFC Star Comes Out Of Retirement To Rejoin 2010 Squad

TORONTO - Once again, our reporters are in the middle of the action, capturing all there is to report on from the January transfer market.

This time, however, the aquisition is non other than former PFC Defender John 'Shaky' Shipley.

Shakes joined PFC back in 2007 as part of the Superdraft that also brought in Steve Ward, Jason Shumski, and Matt Dookie. The foursome, all friends, have fit in nicely at PFC and the rest as they say is history.

Shakes spent time at defence and defensive mid, working often in tandem with buddy Jason Shumski, to hunt down opposing attackers and shut them down.

He helped turn the team into a contender, and was a member of the 2007 Championship Team.

Teaming up with buddies Matt Dookie, and the return of Jason Shumski this year as well, Shakes should prove to be a much welcomed return to a team desperate for better defensive results.

Eddy Meguerian Retires From Pistolas FC

TORONTO - They called him 'Fast Eddy' Meguerian, or Eddy M.VP

Now, fans and players alike will be calling him Eddy 'The Legend'.

After taking a year off and then giving it a great effort in October's Toronto Mississauga Cup, Eddy Meguerian has announced his retirement from soccer, leaving a legacy behind at Pistolas FC.

A shoo-in to be the first ever inducted into the PFC Hall of Fame, Eddy brought an incredible talent to the field, and made deeking other players - entire teams sometimes - and goalies, look so effortless.

He remains one of the All-Time Goal Scoring Leaders, notching 9 in 2008 when stats were first recorded, and if his goals from 2007 before stats were recorded, he would clearly be the All-Time Goal Scoring Leader.

"Eddy was one player you could always count on to just takeover a game, and essentially win it for you. He deservedly won the MVP in the 2007 Championship Game, scoring the winning penalty shot with such confidence and ease to seal the victory," said lifelong friend and PFC Director Davidinho, "He will be missed greatly by all, and I can only dream of what this season would've been like had Eddy gotten a chance to play more with the likes of Rob Pikula and Jules, the two star studded roster players added last year and never got a chance to play with Eddy."

"Eddy is truly a special player. He will be missed by all - especially me, as I always looked better when he was on the field!" chimed in team captain Charles Eppich.

Eddy, a former First Team Collegiate Basketball Star (See: OUA 1996-97 ALL STAR), had previously suffered knee injuries throughout his playing years, and re injured them again in July of 2008. Though he missed the 2009 season, he played in the 2009 Toronto Cup, notching a few goals and looking good. And though the knee is fine now, the demands of the sport on them would most likely cause pain or re injury, and aren't worth the risk.

"I think Eddy's come through for us on more than one occasion. He's a star no doubt about it. It was good to see him play in October, and he still has his magic stuff. We understand his situation and support his decision, as heartbreaking as it is. Hopefully, he might still be able to make cameo appearances at future Tournaments as he did in October, as I get the sense he loves to play and is quite competitive. Maybe the itch can be satisfied by these one off tourneys," said Romerinho.

"Most importantly, we want to say Thank You Eddy for all you've done for this franchise, and remember the door will always be open to you."

Pistolas FC Snag Two From Solun FC

TORONTO - Only a week into the new year, and only three days into the January Transfer Market, and Pistolas FC is happy to announce two new additions to the club; Johnny and Kes.

Captain Charles had a great conversation with Johnny, and got quite the impression about team commitment. Charles discussed it with the Executive Committee, while in the meantime Johnny made a pitch for his buddy Kes as well.

"Solun FC has for the most part been a very consistent team since the inception of the league. They were one of the originals, and we've always enjoyed hard fought, clean, games against them. Scorelines have always been tight. But our need was defence. Having communicated our interest and making our needs clear, we were happy with the response from Johnny and Kes who committed to the team first mentality. Having watched them play, coupled with both their experience in the league and coming from a team like Solun FC, the decision to add them was a quick one. As it turns out, we have increased our search for quality players on the transfer market, and hopefully if we can grab some more solid defenders that will allow Kes play his natural striker position. But for now, on defence, they add a much needed depth component we've been looking for," said Romerinho.

Stay tuned tommorow for the morning and afternoon revelations of the 2010 season.

The Long Awaited Year Begins

TORONTO - With the merriment of the holidays now behind us, a well rested staff at PistolasFC.com returns to work this year with a very busy schedule of duties.

Though the season won't commence until May, the executive staff has been hard at work behind the scenes working on issues related from the 2010 roster, to new kits, to formations and strategies, the BMO intersquad game, as well as troubleshooting the technical difficulties that have plagued the expansion franchise websites.

Having already held a few meetings, the executive committee (of Romerinho, President, Charles, Vice President, Davidinho, Director, and Steve Ward, Assistant Director), have resolved to aim for a hard cap roster 22 players.

If last year taught us anything, it was that the league became more competitive, and as good as a unit as we were in 2007 and 2008, the deficiency on the bench - or in attendance rather - fatigued the solid first half efforts of the guys playing. I don't doubt for a second that a solid five subs every game - even just getting 11 guys many games - was the difference in winning and losing. Sure the league has gotten younger, faster, and skilled, but with a deep roster, we are by far a more dangerous team," relayed Romerinho in a press conference announcing the roster decision.

"Unfortunately the ugly face of injuries plagued our team, with many players suffering setbacks leading to more than a few weeks on the injured list. The defensive trio of Conrad, Rocco, and Luch all suffered ankle or leg injuries, that could only heal with time. And losing not one but three mainstay defensemen would cause hardships for any team. Then with long weekends, vacations, weddings, and other commitments, the absences accrued and they team slipped in the standings."

"Therefore, the Executive Committee has decided that we will take a 22 man roster to help rectify this issue. At stake is the commitment from all 22 roster invitees to man up to their commitment. Though we don't expect 22 guys to show up every Sunday due to injury, other pressing commitment, or vacation, we would expect that from 22 players there would be no more than 6 absent at a time. The large roster size also gives us the flexibility of letting an injured player rest a week so to not put more pressure and cause more damage to that knee, ankle, or leg. We learned this lesson when we brought back Jay Shumski too soon in '08, and then lost him for the critical games in the playoffs and all of the '09 season."

"Another big part of the decision was that although a roster of 22 seems extremely large, we are basing the decision on the past 2 years, as we had 24 guys at one point in 2008 (though some like Roman the 'Rainmaker' never even played a game - it actually rained out the time he showed up and he never returned), and last year we had a roster size of 20."

At the end of the day commitment will ultimately dictate the 2010 season.

PFC Soccer Tips and Training Tools - V.3 - Defense

When defending against an opposing team with possession, here are some essential defending keys to apply on the pitch:

Press the Ball
As an opposing team proceeds on the attack, an increasingly higher amount of pressure should be put on the ball (topped out around your goal). This does not only mean regaining possession, however by having a defender in front of the attacker limits his options and will rush his play. In your own defensive end, ensure to always stay between the attacker and your own goal. Conversely, if you are out far enough from your own goal, you may try closing down your opponent's passing lanes. It is never recommended to face the attacker straight on. Pressure by positioning your body at an angle to lead or 'shepherd' him in a specific direction (preferably towards other teammates who can close the player off and force a turnover).

Close Down Passing Lanes
Defenders can limit the options of an attack by closing down passing lanes. Approach the ball carrier in a manner that blocks his (nearest) support. Normally you want to force your opponent to play the ball out to the sideline, unless you are closer to his goal. The player pressuring the ball is the first defender. The second defender is the one providing cover by positioning himself behind the "first defender" and slightly drifting towards the middle. If the first defender gets beaten, he drops back and they reverse roles.

Utilizing these defensive techniques properly will result in an overall solid defensive stance and undoubtedly create frustration for any opposing team's offensive attempts.

H1N1 Sidelines El Presidente No More

TORONTO - After weeks of M.I.A., PistolasFC.com is breaking the news that the Pistolas FC Presidente himself, suffered a bout with the H1N1, rendering him ill and off work for some time.

"Back in late October, it hit me suddenly overnight, and just became this powering menace. It spread so quickly, and took on a life of its own. Fortunately, the case was a moderate one, and the different symptoms seemed to appear on different days, though a nasty cough and sore throat lingered for days. Towards the end, my body felt like it went into a shut down mode, and exhaustion set in. I was resigned to quarantine myself in the basement, wearing masks, and washing my hands after every cough/sneeze. I was worried most for others around me, and wanted to be vigilant in containing the virus," said El Presidente himself.

"However, even through all my precautions, as the virus died down in me, it eventually did spread to my family. There were trips to the hospital for the little one, but the tough cookie that she is, fought hard and has overcome it as well. It's been an extremely tiresome month for all of us, but I'm happy to report that all is slowly looking better."

"I still plan on taking some R&R time to recover from the exhaustion that remains, and thank Director Davidinho and the staff at PistolasFC.com for carrying on the daily vigours of the club. My deepest apologies to the other franchises - namely Los Angeles and Pasadena - whose articles have been sitting in backlog in my email account, and will be posted shortly."

"More announcements and articles are coming in due time, and a return to form for the website will resume within the next two months."

PFC Soccer Tips and Training Tools - V.2 - Basic Soccer Drills (Individual)

During this long PFC off-season, while on hiatus from the team and on-field play, there are many steps you can take on your own, even indoors, to better improve your game.

Incorporate these simple, yet effective, ball drills in your overall plan.

Wall Drills: It's as simple as the name in theory, but it can be essential to improving ball skills. You play the ball off the wall, incorporating changing angles, speeds, ball elevations, and the distance between you and the wall. It is recommended to change it up during the drill and over time.

Ensure to keep your body relaxed and be on your toes at all times. Make sure to use your left and right foot while kicking the ball, as well as trying to use all parts of your foot (inside, outside, instep). Once you have a grasp of the drill, try to incorporate the use of headers as well.

Many great soccer players, including the great Maradona and Pele commonly practised in this way.

Step Drills: Stand behind the ball with one foot on top. Jump on and off the ball without letting the ball track backwards. The foot coming off is quickly replaced with the other, and so on. Once you start to perform it you will notice that it is more difficult then you thought. Aim to improve your quickness and crisp transitions.

Machine Gun Drills: This drill will improve ball skills and even increase your stamina, endurance and speed. Begin by placing the ball between your feet. The nature of this drill is similar to the step drill discussed, however on the sides of the ball in order to get the ball to move back and forth between your feet. Side to side. Try to bring your feet even closer together over time and practice. Incorporate stepping over the ball too. This drill is all about being comfortable with the ball in close, between your feet.

Juggling Drills: Viewed as one of the most essential ball skills and most commonly practiced. This is one of the most basic soccer skills and will help you improve your overall ball skills. Be sure to use all parts of your body while juggling the ball and climb up over time. This is another drill where you can try to vary the sequences to round your ball skills (foot to thigh, thigh to head, foot to head, etc.)

As your own coach and trainer, ensure to bring a high level of effort and focus to all these drills. It is 'the world's sport' and its reach reigns through every country, in every continent. Through the game, we are one; so why not help out our fellow man?

Well years ago, once the comedy behind the worlds first 'men's recreational amateur franchise' wore off, and things took off in an amazing direction, one of the top goals of the club was to determine how we could do our part as global citizens to support charitable causes.

Naturally, a tournament with proceeds going to charity would be the best idea, as it mixes our passion for the game, and the passion of others; having teams enter a tournament, paying an entry fee, and donating the proceeds to local charities is one of our goals. But while that is in the works, we wanted to reach out abroad in some way, since two of our five franchises, PFC Lagos and PFC Mumbai, are in continents that need our help.

We were reminded through the partners logos on the SoccerResort.com website, about an organization called Kiva. Kiva's mission states:

Kiva's mission is to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty.

The concept involves micro-lending, where for as little as $25, you can help loan someone partial funds for their small business. In return, they set a time frame for when they intend on repaying the loan. Once they repay the loan, you can cash out or loan the money to someone else.

Here at the Pistolas FC, we are happy to have started loaning funds to a gentlemen in Kenya, and look forward to loaning more funds to people in all continents.

We encourage all our readers here at PistolasFC.com, to visit Kiva.org, register, and start loaning today! You can make a difference.

Pistolas FC Lagos Honours A Legend

LAGOS - Hello readers and welcome to Pistolas FC Lagos. Sporting characters who could pass as stunt doubles for Sean Connery and Rod Stewart, the team played a hard fought game. But this Pistolas team was up for the challenge, and held their own until a late goal on a confusing substitution left a Celtic player open for a shot. The final result was 1-0 GU.

In the second game, PFC played the 20 something, Soccer Centre, Indoor Champions FC Bada Bing, who despite their trickery scored only one good goal; their first. They then scored a lucky second before Eddy Meguerian scored to bring the team within 1. From there on, Pistolas FC brought on waves of pressure and forced FC Bada Bing to defend. Finally in the last minute with all PFC players forward looking for the tying goal, FC Bada Bing got a lucky counterattack, and an even luckier finish. After that the whistle went, and the game ended 3-1.

The third game of the day was the first of a double header, and saw Pistolas FC play another 20 something team, in the Chelsea clad team of the Centurions. Midfielder 'Jules' arrived just in time for this game. Pistolas FC dominated the entire game, rarely conceding a chance in their own end. They had a number of shots, and chances throughout the game, until Jules craftily redirected a corner kick into the net to put PFC up 1-0. Harry, on loan from Tom's 76ers, had a blistering shot in this game that just sailed wide of the far post, and was quite the highlight this game. The game ended 1-0 in favour of Pistolas FC and gave them a chance at the playoffs.

Needing a win to help boost their chances of advancing, Pistolas FC faced their greatest challenge yet in the second game of their doubleheader; the 18 and 19 year old Toronto Cup Spring Champion team of Braga Contracting. Early in spring this team won the Open Age Tournament, and received the Miami South beach championship prize. Fighting for their lives, they held Braga in check and the game was evenly played. There were chances on both ends and in this match Braga Contracting was lucky to escape with a 1-0 win. PFC needed a tie at least to help their chances, but were denied.

A break in the schedule allowed players to finally grab some food, and rest up, and also saw the departure of Nigel, Harry and Colin. Nigel had provided some solid defensive play throughout and would be an awesome addition to the outdoor team if he chose to join. Many PFC regulars were happy to have a guy who knew his position and played it well. Harry provided an extra spark up front but hurt his knee halfway through the tourney. His contributions helped make the team competitive all day. Colin was a welcomed addition at all positions and was also an important factor throughout the day.

Unfortunately the departure of these three, combined with the 'rest break,' food, the double header, and not playing in over 6 weeks, finally caught up with cast of PFC, with cold and tired lungs and legs left to do one more battle.

Against The Zat Knight, the team started strong, with Eddy Meguerian blasting a bullet into the top corner. But as the game dragged on, fatigue ensued, and Pistolas FC ended up on the losing end - again against a squad of 18 and 19 year olds.

All in all, it was a great tournament for the team. There were no blowouts, and the team had a chance to win or tie every game against top quality opponents. Considering the fact that these teams have played together for years, are much younger, are champions in there own right, and are more involved with the style and stamina needed for a small 7 a side indoor type game, the makeshift roster of 10 Pistolas regulars and 5 quality additions sure put up a fight.

Well done lads.

Review: adidas F30i FG TRX's

TORONTO - There are soccer shoes, and then there are Adidas soccer shoes.

After going through a bevy of soccer shoes over the last two seasons, ranging from brands including Mitre, Lotto, Nike, and Adidas, I've had both the pleasure and misfortune of doning on many a soccer boot.

This past season, after years of great use with the Lotto's, I finally had to put the boots to rest, in place of my Nike Ronaldinho's, Nike Mercurial Vapours, and my Adidas F50 Tunit's. I used them all interchangebly throughout the season, but was still looking for a new feel.

Thanks to our friends at SoccerPro.com, I was able to get my hands on a beautiful pair of Adidas F30i FG TRX's (pictured above. The shipping was fast and the sizing was perfect - something that has enhanced my online shopping experiences lately - and arrived with enough time for to try them on and get a feel for them leading up to our Toronto Cup tournament this past Saturday.

I thought, what a better way to put a set of boots through a test, than to play 5 gruelling, fast, matches in conditions that varied throughout the day from warm to cold to rainy.

Out of the box, the F30i's were are gorgeous pair of cleats, the kind you almost don't want to wear because of its asthetic beauty. The synthetic material was soft and supple, yet true to molded form.

The shoe features a different sort of lace covering similar to other models like the F50's, yet the firmness of the F30's lace covering seemed more accurate in shooting to me than the Nike Mercurial Vapours whose lace covering is so thin that kicking the ball actually does touch the laces.

From the moment I slipped them on, I fell in love with these shoes. It fit like a glove, and though they were light, I didnt find it too light or too thin. I felt the fit to be much different than the F50's. Though similar in styling, I found the F30's were more in sync with my feet whereas the F50's has slithers of odd spacing here and there.

The glove like fit made ball handling, and passing a pleasure. The smooth styling of the shoe made everything I did accurate, a big contrast to other boots I've worn without lace coverings or a smooth surface.

Aside from helping get my shots on target, the thing I loved most about these shoes, was how they are basically designed to help curl the ball. Providing the smooth glove like feel lace coverings on the instep was an ingenius idea. Other lace coverings, like my Nike Ronaldinho's, have a lace covering from tongue down, but this smooth instep covering is ideal for those who love to curl the ball and pull off fancy tricks.

I was able to curl the ball a lot more and with a greater spin, often catching keepers off guard throughout the tournament. On free kicks, the curling around the walls was awesome, unfortunately in 7 a side games, the nets weren't regulation and the ball missed the target, but to no fault of the shoes. I had even been practicing doing a left curl around the wall into the top right corner the two weeks prior to the tournament, and the shoes never disappointed me.

The fact that it came in white was pretty hype, and the synthetic material made it a bright white versus white leather cleats. Many a player on both my own team and opposing team struck up a conversation just based on the look.

If I had to list a negative, it would be that our outdoor season is done for this year and I can't enjoy the shoes in game situations, but I'll enjoy every minute of practices from now on!

-Romerinho

PFC Pasadena Announces Roster

PASADENA - So, a bit behind schedule here, but we're finally solidified and our roster is ready to go. The inaugural season of Pistolas FC Pasadena will feature some top flight talent in the FASL.

Like our brothers at Pistolas FC Los Angeles, Pasadena decided to recruit a top goalie as someone to build the team around. And from what we've read from the Pistolas FC 2010 Toronto team, this seems to be a common theme; top goalies....(read more)
