and growing out of sand

a gathering
for adults, children and artists
a place to create together
side by side
working with
gumnuts, clay, stones, sticks, sand...

k and i love doing this workshop
creating a space
responding to the space
working with terracotta clay
beautiful materials
and playing with fabulous kids and adults

collecting the natural materials
is fantastic in clunes and surrounds
such a variety of gumnuts!!!

A magical place filled with forest sounds…Three giant nests with enormous eggs inside…

Come to the nests and discover the music of the forest. Make your own sounds with the hidden musical instruments. Nests is a music installation for children Aged 3 to 5 years and their carers.

Le Gerche forest walk and fairy huts

it was cold
but the rain held off

what a discovery!
the landcare walk through the le gerche forest
remnants of a once thriving education program
pepper this walking trail
a fabulous sculpture of one of the local inhabitants

signs and pictures
and colourful tiles in the ground
little surprises everywhere

we had some BIG girls
and a BIG boy
with us
they are so inspiring
when they get going with fairy huts

we had a kinder teacher/mum with us too

i love the opportunity to hear educators

particularly those with a natural ease

interacting with little people

it is especially lovely to hear

them with their own children

i love the intonations
the questioning
the shared wonder

i learn a lot
from this rich modelling
from one mother to another

once again i delight
in being with the kids
and parents
as they
explore
create
play
and fossick

the fairy huts

During term four join one of our Friday gatherings in the playscape between 10am and 12noon. This time is especially for parents and pre-school children to play and create together.

1. Friday 12^th October 10-12pm

Fairy Huts and fossicking walk through the Le Gerche forest.

Meet at the Le Gerche track where we will stroll through the forest collecting natural materials for our playscape and build fairy huts along the way. Everyone welcome parents, grandparents, friends young and old. Dress for a big walk. Bring water and snacks. Backpacks recommended for carrying very little people.

Builder Boards Cubby – build, create, play

Come and put together our very own builder boards cubby.

Feel like real builders as we create our own cubby, pathways, bridges and tunnels.

Bring your own construction hats and let the stories begin!

Sandpit Village

Sand, blocks, sticks, spades, rocks and loads of interesting natural materials are the foundations for a village that we will create together in our massive sandpit. Make interesting dwellings with fences, gates, roads and pathways connecting our village together.

Things for the trees – decorations with a difference

Find beautiful shapes in wood, bark and other natural materials to make into decorations to hang up in the trees in our playscape. Hammer and tie bits together to join the moon in the trees for Christmas decorations with a difference.

i love ArtPlay!
rare is the opportunity to imagine with others
to try out ideas
to push the boundaries
to fail
and try again
in the world of art, artists and children

this is what ArtPlay enabled me to do with
sonic baby

Calling All Babies
a series of workshops at ArtPlay
facilitated by Jen Anderson
and along with
Heidi Wetherall and Ben Goodes
we imagined and created arts based experiences
for pre-language and pre-walking babies from 4 months old

a BIG thanks to Jeany from ArtPlay
for her technical knowledge and support

reflections on the sonic baby workshops
in the ArtPlay setting:

the difference between workshop and experiment

sonic baby workshops 1 and 2
were highly experimental in nature
(unwittingly they were more of an experiment than a workshop)
i realise that there were too many unknown elements
for me to create a workshop environment
of sharing some of my skills and knowledge
of creating an experience for parents and babies to share together
to take something new away with them

as an experiment they were highly successful...
i learnt a lot
i changed my thinking
i developed more questions
i discovered many small moments
and the participants provided insights that would not have been possible without them

as workshops they were lousy!
of course this was not my intention
much of what i had supposed might happen just did not
for a variety of reasons, technical and otherwise.

(i apologise again here to the parents and babies who bravely took part.
i can only hope that you experienced a small moment, a moment of awareness, a moment of joy or a consciousness of being present with your baby that may have made your journey into ArtPlay that day worthwhile... and to ArtPlay thanks for inviting me back!)

with time between the fist two workshops and the second two
and with the insight provided by the failed sonic baby workshop
(and the rich discoveries of the sonic baby experiment)
i wildly re-imagined sonic baby
but maintained the central ideas and framework

firstly i realised that the parents coming to ArtPlay
were coming to a workshop
they had not signed up for an experiment
there is a difference

participants in an experiment
knowingly enter into an experience
which may or may not work
it is the process and the journey
that is of interest
not knowing how things will turn out
is central to an experimental process

if sonic baby had been an experiment
that we all entered into knowingly
the parents would have been part of the discovery
which could have been a richer experience for us all

experiments are vital
but in the ArtPlay setting this time around
sonic baby was a workshop

for the second two workshops
my major rethinking was around
space
sound and
image

i recreated the space
redesigned the sound
and rethought the image
to create a more controlled theatrical experience

did it work?

as a workshop this was not the forum

to delve into the experience for the parents and babies

so i really can't say

my observations suggest that a sense of theatre was created

a heightened sense of reality

which may have resonated back out in the real world

my feeling is that at least some of the parents

took away a consciousness of the sonic world

we all share with babies

ArtPlay are providing further opportunity

to explore baby workshops

with Jen, Heidi, Ben and others

GREAT!

i will be running another workshop in November

LIGHT SHADOW BABY

i am compelled to continue to investigate this work
inspired by the work of great artists Chiara Guidi and Sally Chance
and inspired by babies
who provide insights into what it is to be human
and compel us to be present in the world
to listen and see and feel

after the complete series of 4 sonic baby workshops

who is this work for?
what do the babies get out of it?
what do the parents get of it?

my thinking so far...

the experience is aimed at adults
but also engages babies
a heightened theatrical experience of the everyday

i am working towards creating

the babies main benefit will be back in the real world
in the theatre of the everyday
experienced with their parents
who will bring some of their heightened
theatrical experience of the everyday into the everyday

filled with the sounds of morning bird calls
and a large tree projected onto the wall
blowing in the wind
an opportunity to begin to
tune into the babies response to the
sound and image around them

we went for a walk outside

listening and watching

parents were invited to take photos

with their phones of the things around

that their babies seemed to be listening to

as a way of tuning into the sound around

what were the babies listening to?
what could they hear?

back to ArtPlay
for an experience of

we had just been on

recorded on a zoom

photographed with iphones

experimenting with technology
that enabled us to playback a
recording of the walk and to
scroll through the images
we had taken on our iphones as they were
projected onto the wall

i had imagined a space

of heightened sound and image of the every day

a space that allowed the babies to recognise
sound and image they had just experienced

a space for parents and their babies to share in the wonder of the everyday sounds that surround us

however…

this was much more of an experiment than i had anticipated

with many things not working the way i had predicted

with some major technical hitches

inhibiting the sound

and limitations with the projections

the theatrical environment i had hoped to create

back at ArtPlay

did not happen

with a sinking heart

i attempted to explain the ideas behind the experience the participants were meant to have

then i thanked and farewelled the brave souls who attended

the workshops provoked strong and mixed reactions

and there were some quite bewildered parents

there were elements of the workshops that I felt did work

I was inspired by the stillness and the awareness of the parents as we walked and listened

I was inspired by the sound I heard as we walked

I was inspired by the individuality and the similarities between babies

I was inspired by the singing and the sounds of the babies

When we gave them the space to be heard

I was inspired enough to want to

try sonic baby again

(i apologise here to the parents and babies who bravely took part.

i can only hope that you experienced a small moment, a moment of awareness, a moment of joy or a consciousness of being present with your baby that may have made your journey into ArtPlay that day worthwhile... and to ArtPlay thanks for inviting me back!)

my major rethinking was around

i recreated the space

i say with sound designer Wayne Parker
and re-mixed the sound recordings from the first sonic baby walks
and made 2 short films for projecting
with the sound and image from the first two workshops

I hired a dome

made with a bent timber frame

and a canvas shell

the workshop…

we gathered in the dome
listened to bird calls
shadows of birds floated on the floor

together we watched the film of the first sonic baby walk
projected onto the dome

the babies looked for the sound
the image didn't hold them
too high?
too far away?
not real?
not familiar...

i was fascinated by the sounds we heard together
the sounds we all seemed to tune into
and the sounds that passed

we went for a walk
found space in the playground
to stop and listen

went up the lift
to the sonic baby tunnel
time for sound play
and this time...
time to listen to the babies
and they did sing

back to ArtPlay
and into the dome
we watched and listened to
the sonic baby tunnel film

it wasn't perfect but there were some lovely moments

and i hope the parents felt a little less like lab mice!

one mother's response:

the sound was too loud
(technical hitch)
quite an unpleasant experience for the mother.
but...
she said it made her realise
how noisy our babies world is
and how
overstimulated
they so often are just by the
immediate environment

a profound insight

how can i create a similar response
without it being distressing?

there is no need for a new mother to feel distressed
at an arts event
even for a profound insight

a great question to ponder...

to the beautiful young mother and her baby
who offered that profound comment

one day we want to cover

all the trees

and

all the walls

all the logs

with creatures and decorations

like Kusama covers with dots

the berries are hawthorn berries

they are everywhere here

growing on the side of the road

Yonke showed them to me

they don't lose their colour

the creatures have such personality

they seem to be

characters in search of an author

the creatures, creators

and other creations

spread beyond the tree trunk

and my prediction has proved totally incorrect

the parents and children who have begun creating together

have consistently continued to create

with a break for food

for nearly two hours

they work side by side

they work independently together

they continue to share

chat and fossick together

it's beautiful to see

pita-pata

it seems we have a resident possum

he or she

hard to tell

made a dash across the garden

then appeared in our tree

with a friend

the ground was damp
the leaves are still crunchy

we had perfect weather for building small things
it was warm enough - or not cold enough
to enjoy sitting and making

on any given day

are happy to sit with the detail

chat with their parents

introducing the inaugural

pita-pata program

taking place in Creswick this winter.

after building the natural playscape and then spending half a year

playing in it

observing what happens

how the kids play and interact with it

how the parents inhabit the space

and how it changes with the seasons

I'm now ready to begin experimenting with hosting more structured gatherings

the sessions will begin with parents and children making and creating together

with a few skills and techniques for building

and some interesting materials

we will make around our giant log tables

in the sandpit

and around the trees

the kids will inevitably lose interest in the detail

they will wander off and play elsewhere in the playscape

the parents will keep making

(this is my prediction)

one of my favourite observations in the playscape has been

how much adults love to make things with their hands

in a non-threatening

playful environment

the kids seem to enjoy their parents making things too

after a while we will gather to have a look at was has been made

we will have something to eat together

then the children continue to play

while the parents have a chat

we'll see how this goes

Jude and I went to the playscape today
we found a beautiful AUTUMN garden
with a carpet of red leaves

but most excitedly for both of us
we found another fantastic creation left in the sandpit
by the youth group
who gather in the hall and surrounds, including the playscape

We explored it
followed all the paths
and thanked the youth group as if they were there
Jude wanted to tell them how much he loved it

it feels like the beginnings of a very beautiful exchange

I had a go at creating a stick hut
I was hoping for a publicity shot for a flyer

he was

It's been about a year since my last post and year further down the PITA line.

Grown out of PITA has been
THE NATURAL PLAYSCAPE
Yonke Van Geloven (from the PITA Hepburn network) and I dreamt, designed and built a natural playscape
nestled between the house and the hall
at the
Creswick Neighbourhood House
(ofiicially the Creswick Neighbourhood Centre but it is such a beautiful house that I like to call it that.)

We had a community build over three days in September 2011
and since then have run weekly gatherings on Friday mornings for parents and their pre-school children.

I have continued to dream PITA and develop pita-pata

The first pita-pata program is running in the Creswick Natural Playscape this term.

New theatre show for babies

I went to the Come Out Festival in Adelaide on the weekend for my own professional development.
I left the boys at home... wow! headspace! what a luxury! and that's another conversation.

One of the main reasons for being there was to see Sally Chance's new show,
This [Baby] Life.

A show for babies 4 months-18 months.

An extraordinary piece of theatre.

Sally had a fellowship and researched the cultural life of babies through dance for two years and this show is one outcome of her research.

The research is evident!

This was a carefully constructed, respectful, moving and entertaining piece of theatre for the tiny audience members and for the many adults in the room.

One of the highlights for me was watching the performers respond to three eggs that had been lovingly placed, put to bed on a pile of blankets by an attentive crawler. The performers needed the blankets but through gentle, playful and funny interactions the eggs were respectfully left on the diminishing pile of blankets being lifted and re-placed by the performers, then settled again by the baby, over and over until the performers had all the blankets they needed and the baby was happy to leave the eggs to sleep and participate in the rest of the show!

We were all entranced by this interaction and the intelligence of the exchange between the performers and the baby.

Very exciting new theatre!

questions and conversations

i have enjoyed the life perspective of others in the PITA network.
many of us are muddling along with questions about what it all means now we are parents.
how does this impact on our practice, on our work, on us?

on a practical level in terms of logistics...

time to work?
who looks after the baby?
child care? what is that all about? where is the flexibility?

and on a deeper conceptual and philosophical level...

where is the time to think?
because a lot of what i thought before, i actually don't think anymore?
the insights in to what it is to be human?
living life with a sensory being, who i also happen to be totally besotted with?
inspiring?

and who am i?

personally PITA has inspired a whole line of inquiry and questioning in my work.

moments of mindfulness
being present

SMALL WORLDS

In the Natural Playscape Between the house and hall.

Working with sticks, clay, miniature mud bricks, gumnuts and ideas. Create small worlds of huts, stone walls, pathways and forests.

Over four sessions parents, children and artists will play with materials and ideas in the winter Playscape. Each session will respond to the weather and may even include a walk in the rain collecting sticks. Dress weather prepared with raincoats and gumboots! What fun!

Bring a dry change of clothes and finish the session in the cosy house with a cuppa... For pre-school children and parents.
