Wine has been an important aspect of human culture for thousands of years. Archaeologists in Speyer, Germany discovered the oldest bottle of wine in existence while excavating two Roman stone sarcophaguses in 1867. The bottle dates back to at least 325 AD. It is now on display at the History Museum of the Pfalz in Germany.

In spite of wine's longevity as a worldwide cultural staple, one might think that National Wine Day on May 25 was created with Benny's Chop House in mind. Benny's, a modern and sophisticated take on the traditional American steakhouse (444 N. Wabash, Chicago; 312-626-2444) has made its wine program one of the finest in Chicago.

Many restaurants like to boast about their Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. Yet Benny's Chop House surpasses them-it is one of a select few restaurants in Chicago that has earned the Wine Spectator "Best of" Award of Excellence.

According to Wine Spectator, the "Best of" designation gives "special recognition to restaurants that clearly exceed the requirements of the Award of Excellence. "Nothing makes a wonderful dining experience more memorable than an excellent, enjoyable glass or bottle of wine. Since our menu includes a great variety of dishes in addition to our USDA Prime Natural steaks, Prime Dry-aged steaks and Prime Wet-aged steaks, we have built a wine collection that complements many different foods while catering to a wide range of wine preferences."

Benny's also has a unique wine locker program that enables frequent guests to purchase wines from the wine list by the case and store them on-premises in climate controlled lockers.

Benny's Wine List features many hard-to-find New World and Old World wines, by the glass or bottle, at a variety of price points. "We search for wines that are excellent values at whatever price level," said Schmieding. "Quality and variety are our most important criteria, and we make sure that all of our guests are given excellent guidance from one of our Sommeliers in picking the wines that fit their mood and choice of meal."

Wines by the glass range in price from $11 to $35. Benny's will also serve a 3-ounce "half pour" serving of any wine by the glass. The pinnacle of the wines by the glass is the collection of Fine & Rare Selections, stored using the EnoMatic® preservation system which keeps the wines in their most pristine condition through the use of argon. Benny's also offers two outstanding private label red house wines by the glass which are delicious and exceptional values: Benny's Chop House 2006 Merlot and 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, both from Howell Mountain, California and priced at $17 per glass.

Benny's wines by the bottle are extensive and wide ranging-more than 1,200 labels are on hand. Bottles range in price from $34 to an eye-popping $4,500 for the exceptionally rare and prized 2003 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti en Magnum, Èxchézeaux Grand Cru. Benny's stocks more than 200 white wines by the bottle, covering numerous styles and points of origin. Guests can choose from Champagnes and sparkling wines, including the increasingly popular Brut Rosé. Other white wines include Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Rhône Varietals, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer, Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, Spanish Varietals, Mediterranean Varietals and Rosé.

In keeping with its status as a top-tier steakhouse, Benny's stocks nearly 1,000 red wines that comprise a world-class collection from across the wine spectrum. The Pinot Noirs emanate from the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise regions of France but there are also selections from Germany, Austria, Slovenia, South America, New Zealand, Oregon and California.

Benny's Rhône wines originate in the Northern and Southern Rhône Valley of France as well as from the Languedoc-Roussillon and Provence regions, plus Australia, Washington and California. The Bordeaux wines come primarily from the Pauillac and Saint-Èstephe, Saint-Julien and Margaux regions of France, but there are also Bordeaux-style wines from Italy, New Zealand, Chile, South Africa and domestic versions from Washington and California.

The Cabernet Sauvignon collection comes primary from the United States, including the Napa Valley region and Washington. Other excellent selections originate in Australia, while there are some delicious Cabernet Franc wines from the Loire Valley of France. Merlot selections are domestic, from California and Washington, while the Malbec wines are from France, Australia and Washington.

Benny's wine list continues with an extensive collection of interesting Spanish red wines. Tempranillos are primarily from the La Rioja and Castilla-León regions, with a few domestic versions from Oregon and Washington. Wines made from the Spanish Garnacha grape are from Priorat and Catalonia regions of Spain.

Italian wines are well represented as well, with Sangiovese wines from Toscana; Barbera and Dolcetto wines from Piemonte; Nebbiolo wines from Piemonte and California; numerous regional wines from Barbaresco, Amarone della Valpolicella, Sicily, Umbria and Calabria.

Zinfandel lovers will find a varied collection of wines from California and Washington, and there are some interesting varietals including Lagrein, Gamay, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Pinotage from both the Old and New World that are not to be missed.

Of special note is Benny's global and domestic collection of half bottles (375 ml) including Champagnes, white and red wines, and dessert wines. Other notable bottles include large format bottles from Burgundy, Bordeaux, California and Italy. Benny's is home to the only magnum bottle of Quinta do Crasto Vinha Maria Teresa, from Portugal, in the entire state of Illinois.

Scott Fitzgerald’s very beautiful and very modern novel, The Great Gatsby, and so we followed him in doing the same with this contemporary translation. JAY Z, Anton Monsted, Jeymes Samuel and I had the benefit of working with some of today’s greatest artists on this film version of The Great Gatsby. Blending modern-day music with the sounds of the Jazz Age had an immeasurable impact on the film, and I’m so pleased that the soundtrack is allowing audiences to enjoy the music long after they leave the theater.”

If you sense that your crystals are more than just "tools," and you'd like to know them more consciously and care for them confidently, this class is for you! Discover how to go deeper in understanding and collaborating with these loving, powerful, unique beings from the heart of Mother Earth.You will experience a guided meditation to attune yourself to a crystal and consciously interact with it in order to effectively partner with the crystal for personal or professional healing work. You will also discover and have a chance to practice the three universally safe and effective methods for cleansing/clearing crystals. You'll learn simple healing techniques for your crystals as well as energy infusion techniques to expand a crystal's capacities for healing and service. There will also be special opportunities to receive channeled and personalized information about your crystals from the instructor! To get the greatest benefit from this class, you should own at least one crystal, desire to work with crystals at a deeper intuitive level, and have some experience with guided meditation (a plus but not required).

After her spiritual awakening in 2011, Susan Sinclair immediately began receiving consciously channeled information and messages from crystals as fellow sentient beings. The crystals themselves have been her primary teachers, though she also has studied the writings of noted crystal authorities. Susan deeply resonates with the Wandjina people's saying: Yorro Yorro, Everything Standing up Alive, meaning that crystals are alive, sentient, and sometimes in need of healing from us as much as we are in need of healing from them!

Lillie’s Q Bucktown location slated to reopen mid-June;
Chef Charlie McKenna and Lillie’s Q team competing at Memphis In May World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest this weekend

Charlie McKenna, chef and owner of Lillie’s Q that serves award-winning competition BBQ along with Southern favorites, is slated to reopen his Bucktown restaurant (1856 W North Ave) in mid-June pending inspections and permitting.

The Bucktown location of Lillie’s Q suffered fire and smoke damage when the restaurant’s hot water heater in the basement malfunctioned and caught fire back on March 14, 2013.

The Lillie’s Q Bucktown location has been closed since the fire. The Lillie’s Q outpost inside the Chicago French Market at 131 North Clinton Street in the West Loop is currently open and serving a limited menu from 10am until 7pm Monday thru Friday and from 10am until 4pm on Saturday.

“It’s been a long road trying to get Lillie’s Q in Bucktown back open, but we’re getting close,” McKenna said. “The outpouring of support from other chefs and restaurant owners, loyal customers, and friends of Lillie’s Q has been absolutely incredible. We’re hoping to put together a really amazing finish at Memphis In May this weekend, and ride that wave right into getting the Bucktown location of Lillie’s Q open. We can’t wait to open our doors again and feed everyone.”

Chef McKenna and his Lillie’s Q competition BBQ team (which includes his father, Quito) will compete in the whole pork shoulder category at the Memphis In May World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest in Memphis, Tennessee, this weekend. Memphis In May is widely regarded as the “Super Bowl” of BBQ competitions.

Over the past eight years in the whole pork shoulder category at Memphis In May, the Lillie’s Q team placed 24th in 2012, 12th in 2011, 4th in 2010, 8th in 2009, 10th in 2008, 1st in 2007, and 4th in 2006. About 100 professional BBQ teams from around the world compete each year in the whole pork shoulder category at Memphis In May.

The teams begin prepping and smoking in the morning on Friday, May 17. Judging is Saturday, May 18, and the award winners will be announced around 6:30pm that night.

EVERY STEP COUNTS FOR LIVINGWELL

LivingWell Cancer Resource Center Holds its 8^th Annual Bridge Walk Sat., May 18 Stepping off from Fabyan Forest Preserve (Route 31) at 8:00 a.m.

The 8th Annual Bridge Walk welcomes people of all ages to come together in a 5K walk along the Fox River to raise money and awareness for The LivingWell Cancer Resource Center. Pets and strollers are welcome. Interested individuals are invited to create teams of friends, families, neighbors and co-workers in a celebration that raises money critical to helping support LivingWell Cancer Resource Center programs and services. Participants will enjoy food, refreshments and entertainment.

All proceeds from the Bridge Walk will go to fund the 60 plus programs and services offered free of charge through LivingWell. The only comprehensive cancer care center in the western suburbs, LivingWell has served the needs of more than 10,000 people, providing services that encourage, educate and emotionally support people living with cancer, as well as their family members, caretakers and friends.

There is a $30 registration fee for adult participants (ages 13 and up), $20 fee for ages seven through 12, while children six and under and cancer survivors are free.

A collaborative effort of Gene Siskel Film Center staff members, Date with the ‘80s (June 1-July 4) is a series of 11 films from a much-reevaluated decade in American film history. Once seen as a holding pattern between the New Hollywood shake-up of the 1970s and the rise of the indies in the 1990s, the 1980s are now being embraced as an era of lively, flamboyant moviemaking that reinvigorated some of the waning strengths of traditional Hollywood. As the City of Chicago continues to demonstrate a robust culinary community of noted chefs, the city’s premier food festival continues its efforts to highlight these food masters as Taste of Chicago once again features the Mazda6 Celebrity Chef du Jour. This year’s menu of celebrity chefs is: Rick Bayless, Carrie Nahabedian, Giuseppe Tentori, a special pairing of Gale Gand and The Hearty Boys and the newest James Beard Foundation Outstanding Chef Award winner for 2013, Paul Kahan.

The dining experience introduced last year offers attendees the opportunity to enjoy a sit-down, three-course meal in an air-conditioned and decorated dining pavilion for only $40 per person (limit 4 tickets per person). Tickets for the dining experience are purchased in advance and will be on sale Wednesday, May 15 after 10 a.m. on the festival website, tasteofchicago.us.

“The Celebrity Chef du Jour program brings a new and exciting dimension to the Taste of Chicago experience,” said Michelle T. Boone, Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. “It presents an exciting opportunity for Taste patrons to meet and mingle with these talented chefs, and then enjoy fine dining at its best!”

The Mazda6 Celebrity Chef du Jour experience will be dinner served at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday-Friday, July 10-12 and brunch at noon on Saturday, July 13 and lunch at noon on Sunday July 14. Additionally, each of the celebrity chefs will demonstrate their skills at the Dominick’s Cooking Corner located on the Buckingham Fountain Plaza.

“Mazda is so pleased to be part of this unique experience at Taste of Chicago,” said Mazda Midwest Regional General Manager, Scott Farabee. “Chicago is a city where food has become an art form and the Mazda6 Celebrity Chef du Jour pavilion is a wonderful place to appreciate it.”

Once again, students from the Washburne Culinary Institute will assist the chefs in preparation and serving dining patrons. Founded more than 75 years ago, Washburne Culinary Institute is one of the oldest culinary schools in the nation. Washburne provides students with the latest culinary techniques, along with essential hands-on experience to ensure they are equipped to work in Chicago’s most successful restaurants, hotels, private clubs and other culinary establishments.

Author, television host, humanitarian Rick Bayless manages to still find time to be Bravo’s Top Chef Master and one of Chicago’s longtime acclaimed chefs. The multiple James Beard Award winner founded his side-by-side restaurants Frontera Grill and Topolobampo in 1987 and his empire has grown to include XOCO and Tortas Frontera located at O’Hare airport and in downtown Chicago at the Chase Building. Bayless prepares dinner for opening night of the festival, Wednesday, July 10.

After departing her position as Executive Chef of the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, Carrie Nahabedian returned to her native Chicago to open NAHA in 2000, which led to a James Beard Award and three consecutive Michelin stars. Nahabedian recently opened her latest restaurant, Brindille, along with partner and cousin Michael. While NAHA serves to highlight her Armenian roots, Brindille's refined Parisian fare celebrates her and Michael's favorite spots in Paris. She prepares dinner on Thursday evening, July 11.

Italy’s loss is Chicago’s gain as a 19-year-old Giuseppe Tentori completed his culinary studies in Milan and came to the United States to work at Gabriel’s in Highland Park. After a stop in Salt Lake City, Tentori spent nine years perfecting his craft at Charlie Trotter’s until 2008 when he became Executive Chef at BOKA Restaurant and a partner of the BOKA Restaurant Group. In 2011, Tentori opened his second restaurant, GT Fish & Oyster, named a Bib Gourmand annually while BOKA has earned a Michelin star annually since 2010. Taste dining patrons may enjoy a dinner prepared by Tentori on Friday, July 12.

Saturday at the Chef du Jour will feature three noted chefs for the price of one as Gale Gand and The Hearty Boys team up for a special meal. Gand is a partner and founding executive pastry chef at one star Michelin restaurant Tru and was recognized in 2001 as Outstanding Pastry Chef of the Year by the James Beard Foundation. She also hosted the first ever all-dessert show, “Sweet Dreams” for the Food Network which now airs on The Cooking Channel.

Joining Gand in creating the three-course brunch are Dan Smith and Steve McDonagh, The Hearty Boys. The original winners of “Search for the Next Food Network Star” and hosts of Food Network’s “Party Line with The Hearty Boys”, Smith and McDonagh now have their own Michelin recommended restaurant, Hearty, where classic American foods are contemporized for the modern palate.

Chef Paul Kahan will prepare lunch on Sunday, July 14. In addition to his 2013 award, Kahan is also the 2004 winner of the James Beard Best Chef of the Midwest. Kahan fostered his culinary career in his native Chicago, working in his father’s delicatessen and smokehouse and then a 15-year apprenticeship in Erwin Drechsler’s kitchens (Metropolis and erwin), eventually working for Rick Bayless. He opened Blackbird in 1999 and has since added The Publican, avec, Big Star and Publican Quality Meats. Publican's Chef de Cuisine Brian Huston will be creating the lunch with Kahan.

Cirque du Soleil has brought wonder and delight to more than 100 million spectators in over 40 countries on six continents. The group of more than 1,000 performers is known for its high-quality artistic entertainment that aims to invoke the imagination and provoke the senses. Featuring eight unique shows in Las Vegas and one in Orlando, Cirque du Soleil will showcase its Las Vegas productions at this year’s Macy’s Glamorama.

Macy’s Glamorama is an hour-long high-end fashion show and musical production that not only unveils the latest fashions from the hottest designers, but also showcases heart-stopping dance, lush visuals, staging as well as incredible musical performances by chart-topping artists. This year’s theme is “Fashion in a New Light.” Past musical performers have included Cee-Lo Green, Far East Movement, Cyndi Lauper, Beyoncé Knowles, Robin Thicke, Karmin and more. The evening concludes with an over-the-top after-party at the Rooftop Terrace at Millennium Park. CHICAGO ARTISTS COALITION LAUNCHES A NEW ART FAIR

EDITION Chicago, September 20-22, 2013

The Chicago Artists Coalition is pleased to announce the launch of a new satellite art fair, EDITION Chicago

, that will showcase cutting-edge galleries and non-profit institutions specializing in limited edition works of art. This is Chicago's first edition-only art fair with an emphasis on high-quality works that will offer collectors a unique and accessible entry point to the art market. EDITION Chicago will be held on September 20-22, 2013 at the Chicago Artists Coalition's West Loop gallery located at 217 N. Carpenter Street, Chicago, Illinois 60607. Admission to the fair will be free with a suggested donation of $10.00.

Organized by invitation to select dealers around the country, EDITION Chicago will be intimate and highly-curated. The goal of the fair is to engage and foster a new audience of collectors in Chicago and the region by focusing on accessibly-priced works of art by emerging and established artists, which also illuminate unique aspects of an artist's creative practice. EDITION Chicago is emblematic of CAC's enduring commitment to empowering Chicago artists by cultivating a community of future arts patrons and collectors.

"With our Collectors Circle

program, CAC has been helping to build Chicago's emerging collector base over the past three years," says Carolina O. Jayaram, Executive Director of the Chicago Artists Coalition, "EDITION introduces a larger audience to both local and national dealers whose focus at the fair will be to show works with an accessible price point with an emphasis on emerging artists. We strive to bring to the market a place for cutting edge and up and coming talent who will be the next generation of museum bound, highly collected artists. This will be a great opportunity for new and established collectors to acquire works from these artists on the rise."

The galleries represented at EDITION Chicago will generally showcase works with prices at $5,000 and under. Chicago-based artist Cody Hudson will produce a limited edition print for the fair available only at EDITION Chicago. Taking place the same weekend as the EXPO International Art Fair on Navy Pier, EDITION Chicago offers a unique complement and supports city-wide efforts to establish Chicago as a premier destination for contemporary art.

The Chicago Artists Coalition is partnering with Andrew Rafacz, principal of Andrew Rafacz Gallery, to select galleries who represent the best of emerging talent working in contemporary editions. A complete list of galleries will be announced in Summer 2013, including dealers from Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Miami and other major cities.

"I'm very excited to be partnering with CAC to bring a new fair concept to Chicago," says Andrew Rafacz. "For me, it's about fostering market development and private and institutional support for our emerging artists, both locally and beyond. It will also introduce collectorship to a new audience, something CAC has been intensely interested in for the last few years."
