This was shot during an actual training.

(The camera was set to speed-priority and the flash was mounted on the body in TTL mode. I had to be very quick to bounce the light off the walls and ceiling because they were moving around so very fast.)

When your girlfriend wants a nice photo, but you're in an open park and the shade is far away, you are not carrying additional light equipment, you have no special diffuser with you and and the sun is high and you see harsh shadows in her face... you know you could potentially be in trouble.... :)

Luckily, we had the idea to use Barbara's scarf to create some shadow and also as a diffuser for the sun with a cool light effect as a bonus.

This was shot in West-Java in a small restaurant in 'Ciboleger', the last village before entering Baduy territory. The Baduy have always lived isolated and very close to nature and they reject modern life. No electricity, no alcohol, no perfume, no money. On the picture you can see Daman. He originally belonged to the Baduy tribe but he has embraced the modern life and is now working as a guide.

Anything which allows me to capture light can be a valuable tool to me. The iPhone (and other mobile devices) will keep on getting better and better, and combined with some creative apps, it can become a photographers friend for life.

I would have never had this photo if it wasn't for the camera inside my mobile phone. In fact, even if I would have carried my dSLR with me at the time, the image would have never looked like it does now.

In the end, the kind of tool you use is unimportant because all is fair in love and war and art.

looking at Lombok

Just off the north west coast of Lombok, there are three small islands ("Gilis"). We stayed a few days on Gili Air, the smallest of the three (no roads, no cars, no motorbikes, no TV, no internet). It's paradise if you want to relax, wander around, swim, snorkel with big sea turtles or do nothing but sleep and enjoy the sound of the ocean waves. An amazing little gem and I wish I could have stayed longer.
This is actually one frame of many hundreds I made for a timelapse video, which has yet to be completed. I hope I can find the time to finally get working on it.

These pictures were made on my birthday (end of July) and Billie was exactly one month old then. She's growing fast now and becoming very aware of her environment. I need to make time for a new photo because I'd love to capture her big blue eyes, but meanwhile I hope you enjoy these snaps I made with the iPhone. The quality is not that high, but the emotions and expressions are very real and isn't that what's most important?

Shot in Kuta, Lombok in Indonesia at sunrise. I remember that -even before the first sunbeam appeared- it was already very warm and humid and I was sweating while making these photos. The water of the sea remains warm too, day and night. And if you really want to cool down and feel cold water on your skin.. well, then you're just out of luck. :)

(This was shot later that same day as the previous photo.) When we returned to Shanghai we got off the bus at some random spot somewhere in the city. The light was out-of-this-world and we started wandering around and taking pictures. Walking around at night, random without knowing where you are, in a far-away mega-city somewhere in Asia.. this is true urban exploring. :)
By the way, I'd love to put this one just next to the previous photo.. too bad a computer screen is too small for that.

This is shot during the 'blue hour' in a small "water-town" not so far from Shanghai. I used the barrier of the bridge as a tripod. Getting there by bus was not that easy considering that everything is obviously written in Chinese characters. Thankfully, people were kind enough to point us to the right bus and write the name of the town on a piece of paper so we could show it to the bus driver. I guess smartphones have completely changed tourism now. With a built-in camera, gps, and compass, together with augmented reality apps, real-time voice translators, web access and navigation software, things will get pretty easy if you go backpacking in Asia. For some reason, I feel fortunate to have done it the old-school way using paper maps and asking for directions using simple body and sign language. And not having a mobile phone with me so I couldn't call for help in case of emergency just added an extra thrill to the whole experience. :)

Some time ago, I was asked by Barbara's cousin to shoot his wedding. Last weekend was the big day and I gave everything I had and captured the whole event from Saturday morning 8am until Sunday 1am. This experience (it was the first time I did this) learned me two things : one, shooting weddings is difficult (everything happens really fast and it's all chaos and you don't have much control), and two, shooting weddings is exhausting. My respect to all professional weddings photographers!
Something else.. the trick with the frame has been done before, probably many times, but it actually works amazingly well. Normally, people hesitate when their portrait is going to be made or they struggle to find a good pose in front of the camera. But when you hand them a frame, don't ask me why, but suddenly everyone (no exceptions) is transformed into a model or an actor. People become creative, funny, bold and sometimes even a bit arrogant, and this makes for eye-popping party-shots. :)

Less than two minutes after being born and held by Barbara, Billie's umbilical cord is about to be clamped and cut with scissors. At that time, she looked right into the lens, my heart was racing, but I clicked.

People asked me if it wasn't difficult to shoot these pictures while my daughter was born. Well, to be honest, I actually didn't want to take any pictures. I wanted to leave my camera at home and just be there. But Barbara insisted on it and told me she wanted me to document this once-in-a-lifetime event for us, so she could -after giving birth- enjoy all these impressions too. And so I did.

Still, despite shooting photos, I managed to hold Barbara, support her, talk to her, cheer and shout (while she was pushing) and help her all the way through labour and delivery.

The previous picture ('A star is born') was indeed very special, both for me and Barbara and for everyone seeing the photo. So many tweets and blog articles and facebook likes... it was a little scary sometimes. :) Still, all comments and emails were positive and we would like to thank you all.

The first photo of our daughter Billie and I made it while she wasn't even completely born yet.

For me personally this is the most important photo of my life. It's like all these years I have been practicing just to make this one single shot work.

Barbara was amazingly strong both before and while she was giving birth and I'm just incredibly proud of her. She's awesome, nothing less.

So why this title? Well, not because I think she's going to be a movie or a rock star, but because she will be *my star*, forever, and I'm pretty sure she'll have about a million photos by the time she's grown up. :)

Oh yes, one last thing: I'm absolutely convinced that she's got special powers, because when I'm holding her in my arms and I look at her, I feel something that I've never felt before... it's like she's enchanted me.. yes.. magic.. that's the best way to describe it.

This is the second and last in the series, and the very last one of Barbara being pregnant.

By the way, I was enjoying some new equipment while shooting this, because I have finally bought a decent tripod and head: the Manfrotto 055CX3 Carbon and the Manfrotto 322RC2 Grip. What an absolute joy to work with these two. I have no idea why I waited so long.

Anyway, enough with the gear talk... there's a baby coming! :)

Two weeks ago, I asked Michel Melsen if he would like to give a short workshop to show me how he shoots portraits. His style is timeless and classic and I really love the look of his work. Something really wonderful happened while Barbara and I were traveling through Indonesia. Yes...... we are going to have a baby this summer, so life is about to change.. a lot. :)

I wasn't sure about putting this photo online, but then again, if I wouldn't have, people who visit the site regularly would suddenly see a baby and read about me being father. So I figured the story just wouldn't be complete without a few photos showing Barbara while being pregnant.

This photo is definitely out of my comfort zone : a wide depth of field, no fancy light setup, a classic pose, only very basic editing, and last but not least, my girlfriend captured in a very intimate and vulnerable way. Still, we're both glad we can share this with you.

Barbara floating on calm water, feeling totally ethereal, and in the background you can see the Anak Krakatau volcano.

In 1883 the original Krakatau volcano caused the loudest explosion ever recorded in modern history. The eruption was equivalent to 13.000 times the nuclear yield of the Hiroshima bomb. Eruptions at the volcano since 1927 have built a new island in the same location, named 'Anak Krakatau' (in Indonesian: "Child of Krakatoa").

We spend the night here on Rakata Island. We called it our 'Avatar-experience', after wandering through the lush forest at night while the full moon was shining through the magical young tropical leaves, hearing nothing but a tropical thunder in the far distance, and with countless of flashing fireflies as our only company.

This is the Otus bakkamoena or the Otus lettia or Otus angelinae, I'm not sure. Hmm.. it's difficult to identify a bird, or in this case, an owl.

These owls live all over South Asia (from India and South China to Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc). I made this shot at the bird market in Yogyakarta (Central Java), where you can find everything with wings and also other exotic animals like snakes, geckos and bats.

From since I was a child, I always had this uncomfortable and sad feeling when watching animals in cages. It was no different here. An animal just doesn't belong in a cage.

I thought it would be a good idea to start the new year with a photo of the most impressive view or scene that I witnessed last year.

We ended our incredible trip through Java in the east of the island with a stunning sunrise view over the vast Tengger sand sea with its famous and dramatic volcano cluster : ancient Mount Tengger, the steaming Mount Bromo, stately Mount Batok and in the background Mount Semeru, the highest mountain in Java.

Both for Barbara and for me, this was the highlight of our journey in Indonesia and it's even considered by many as one of the most impressive landscapes in the world.

I wish you all a great and exciting year.

In Gunung Halimun National Park in West Java, we slept in a small and simple guesthouse, managed by a very friendly family. Every night they cooked for us and the meals were absolutely delicious. Wandering around the house, while Barbara was taking a nap, I walked into the kitchen and one of the girls was doing the dishes. The only light here came through a narrow window and I knew this could be an interesting photo.

I don't know if I mentioned this already, but if you ever travel to Indonesia, and you plan to visit Java, make sure to visit West Java. Many people start the journey in the centre and then move on to the east of the island, but for me and Barbara... the west of Java was the best.

After Shanghai, we travelled to Indonesia where we started in the Banten province, located in the west of Java. We began the journey in the small town of Carita, which was the perfect place to base ourselves. From here we could start exploring the western part of the island and enjoy unspoiled nature and visit small villages while safely avoiding other tourists. This portrait was made in the centre of Carita. The people in Indonesia are really very friendly and are always willing to pose for you.

Classic view at 474 m (1,555 ft) from the tallest observation deck in the world.

The World Financial Center (SWFC) is a "must visit" when you are in Shanghai.

It's practically impossible to make an original or a different shot because everyone does the same walk, passing the same (dirty) windows and then there's also a lot of reflection from the inside lights. Still, I hope you like this picture.

Finally, the second photo of our recent trip through Shanghai and Indonesia. I've been busy lately, which is to be expected after traveling for six weeks. Catching up with work and administration (are there freelancers reading this who hate administration too?), friends and family to visit (which is nice of course), cleaning and washing (for the most part done by Barbara) and many, many photos to view and select.

This picture was shot while walking around Shanghai in the late evening. I love these dark, empty and mysterious alleys. The photo is practically untouched by Photoshop. I only made the shadow areas a little brighter (not much) and turned up the sharpness a bit, that's all.
The colors are real. The weird smoggy sky was the strangest I ever saw in my life, totally surreal. Lit by millions of neon-lights, it sometimes looked orange/brownish and sometimes grey or greenish.

Mister Shanghai Cab Driver

It's been many weeks since I last uploaded a photo and that's because me and Barbara have been travelling for six weeks in Asia, more specifically, in Shanghai and Indonesia. It's been a truly epic journey and I've got so many pictures to share.

The Aqua Men series actually wasn't finished (I still had a few good ones) and just before we left home, I made some great pictures of kids jumping on a big trampoline on a nice sunny summer day, but nonetheless, I can't resist starting with the shots I made during our trip. They have all been made with available light only (no flash, no reflector) and I only used the Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, nothing else, because I wanted to travel as light as possible. Minimal gear, unknown places.. but many exciting opportunities.

This first picture is made in Shanghai after spending the first (long) day at the Expo. It was already after midnight, and we've made so many pictures that day, but still, I couldn't resist shooting this cab driver on the way to our hotel. The cab driver is protected by hard plastic and I never saw this before. Shanghai is totally insane and I'll be posting more photos of this immense jungle of concrete and glass.

Yes, only one more picture to post and I've reached 600 photos.
It took me longer than I expected. Maybe it's time to get more creative and productive?..

For the photographers: I got the ISO setting all wrong here, just before this picture, I was shooting Yaron while he was jumping and flying through the air and I tried to freeze the action to the maximum... hence the high ISO setting, which I forgot to change back afterwards. :)

Last weekend, me and Barbara were cycling in the countryside enjoying the summer sun. We stopped to have a drink in a cafe where you can sit and relax in a really nice and quiet garden. I saw a few boys playing and climbing a tree and Barbara politely asked the parents if we could make some photos. The parents asked us if we could send the photos afterwards and the boys were also totally cool with it and posed like they were professionals. I didn't have a flash or a reflector with me and a harsh mid-day sun was making things very difficult. So, this is the result, using nothing but my camera and a tiny little bit of post-work.

It took me some time to get everything into balance. I think I spend about 6 hours of experimenting and editing, spread over two evenings, which is a lot of time, compared to most photos I process. One of the reasons is that I couldn't decide which direction to choose at first. But I'm satisfied with the result now.

Looking at my archive, it almost seems that all those photos were made by different photographers. I just cannot seem to limit myself to one specific style. Should I aim for a recognizable collection of photos?.. It's not the first time I'm feeling ambivalent about this. Then again, I feel ambivalent about practically everything. :)

Me and Barbara have celebrated new year in Venice, Italy. After partying in my hometown all those years, I felt it was time for a change and we haven't regret this decision for one second during the entire stay. We arrived on the 31st and stayed for a few days afterwards. This allowed me to shoot pictures of abandoned streets (as we all know: all is quiet on new year's day), and this is something you don't get to see often when you travel to Venice :)

Since April 2008 I have been seriously bitten by the strobist bug, so I was honestly wondering if I could still shoot in natural and low light conditions and deliver interesting or beautiful shots without the aid of external strobes. So this was the first time that I could really thoroughly test the capabilities of my D700. How were the camera and the Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 lens going to perform in near darkness, with high ISO settings, without strobes, without a tripod even?

This first image is not the best one, not even close, but I love it and it's perfect as the first photo of 2010. It was shot half an hour before the new year, on the Piazza San Marco, in the centre of Venice.

I hope you'll enjoy the series and I wish you all the best for 2010!
P.S. Oh yes, I almost forgot: This is no HDR, I didn't change the colors, didn't improve contrast, didn't add sharpness, no noise-filter has been used.. this is straight from the camera. And this is a hand-held shot, no tripod.

I shot this one in somebody's front yard. Polite as I am, I rang the door bell to ask for permission, but nobody was home, and well... you know.. I just had to shoot this mushroom. :)

So I unpacked my equipment and when I had finally found the right composition and angle (which was pretty difficult in this case because of an ugly background no matter which direction I picked), the rain started poring down on me. So I packed everything as fast as I could and ran for shelter.

After the rain, I decided to continue and lay down in the grass again to shoot the mushroom. Have you ever lay down in grass only a minute after (very) heavy rainfall?

Right, so my clothes were soaked and people who saw me, laying down there in somebody's front yard, while it was wet, windy and chilly outside, were wondering what the hell was wrong with me. So what? I knew I had a nice new photo to publish. :)

Yesterday evening, while we were driving to this place, I was imagining this explosion of light bubbles in the background. But when I started shooting, I already new this was going to be very difficult.

First of all, I know it's weird, but I still don't have a lens above 70mm. This makes creating a bokeh virtually impossible when shooting full body portraits. I wanted to try nevertheless so I decided to use my 50mm f1.4 lens, since using a very wide open aperture could make the lights very blurry. I was wrong... it didn't. If there's anyone selling a Nikkor DC 135mm f2 lens, please contact me! :)

Furthermore, shooting a jumping and dancing model with an extremely limited depth of focus turned out to be pretty challenging. Especially since it was too dark to put the lens on AF. Ever tried manual focussing in the dark? So, after trying for some time, I had to change to f2.8 which made the lights in the background sharper again. I guess this was technically one of the most difficult shoots I did.

Barbara, thanks for the modelling, you were great! x :)

Except for some color de-saturation, there has been almost no post work.

It was late in the afternoon and we had been walking around and shooting pictures in Dusseldorf all weekend. Do you know that feeling when the whole world looks interesting enough to photograph? When the light is beautiful and you feel so inspired that you could shoot every single scene or image in front or around you? Doesn't mean it's truly the case per se, but nevertheless..... I really love that feeling. :)

We're back from Morocco with lots and lots of photos. Just before leaving, I had decided to bring along my camcorder to film and not take my Nikon camera with me (don't ask me why, I don't know), but as usual, it didn't take longer than an hour or two before I was using Barbara's Nikon D40 and Panasonic Lumix to shoot pictures. Morocco was hot, damn hot, but the trip was worth it. We drove from Marrakech to the South, to the Atlas mountains, and then West to the Atlantic. It was amazing. More pictures coming up.

Luna, looking at the lens with the sincerity and truthfulness that only a child can portray. No faking, no hiding.

This picture is practically unprocessed, besides a little bit of classic curve enhancement. Although the photo doesn't attract attention by means of special or sensational processing or effects, I think it's one of my best portraits so far. Hope you like it too.

It's been a while since I posted anything new because of several reasons. First of all, I have been snowboarding in France and, once I was back home, I've been busy editing footage we shot with the Sony handycam in iMovie '09, which is kind of fun to play with, especially if you add a groovy tune, but also takes a lot of your time. It's not only the editing itself that's time-consuming, but especially the rendering or encoding of the movie in the right format, with the right settings, etc, and of course, when the movie's finished, you have to upload those biiiig files and hope that streaming of the HD content will be fine, otherwise, you have to start all over again. And because I'm just beginning with that stuff, I made a bunch of noob mistakes, so it took a bit longer than it should have ;).
Something else I've been working on is learning how to flash properly. I did a workshop recently with Tom Museeuw (www.fotofolio.be) to learn the strobist techniques and Tom definitely knows his stuff! One thing is certain: the strobist world and the world of shooting with natural light are totally and completely different! I felt like I was just beginning with photography :). The second strobist workshop has already been highlighted in my calendar and until then, I need to practice as much as possible.

It's been a while since I posted a low-fi photo, so here's a Lomo picture from last summer in the South of France.

I'm planning on taking up one or two photography workshops in the coming weeks, mostly focussing on strobist techniques. I'm confident that it will lead to better pictures, because the guy giving the workshop is an absolute master in controlling the light. I'm looking forward to it already!

I shot this on the way home from work the other day. I didn't have my tripod with me, so I had to shoot it while I was leaning against a wall. Luckily, the lens is capable of doing 'vibration reduction' (VR), so I guess that also helped. I shot two exposures: one with a shutter speed of 1 sec and the other with a shutter speed of 1/2 second. What you see here is mostly the 1 sec exposure, except for the luminated windows of the office building, that's from the 1/2 sec photo, because they were a bit too hot at 1 sec.

I wonder if a Gattaca-like society will ever become reality? A world where everyone has a virtually perfect genome. And if everyone looks perfect, will it become boring? Will imperfections become something to aspire to? Anyway, this is the first time I publish a self-portrait, but in fact, it's not really me. It's a digital creation because I've "Gattacized" myself: I removed some facial hair and skin imperfections, I made my pupils a lot brighter, I made my nose thinner and last but not least, my face has been made perfectly symmetrical. I wonder if this would have been the way I looked if I was born in, say, 2099?..

25 floors but nobody around

On Thursday, I still had nothing to post and I try to upload at least one photo every week. So just before leaving the house, I took my camera with me as I planned to shoot something after work. Unfortunately, this didn't work out because I was too late (something for the future though..), so I had to improvise. I thought of a place where I spend my childhood playing soccer and basketball and I remembered the lights on the field when it was dark. When I got there -I hadn't been there in years-, it was pretty much as I remembered it, so I took my camera and tripod and started walking in the snow, still wearing the office clothes and shoes, no hat, no gloves and it was freezing and windy. To make things even more dramatic ;), I was feeling a bit sick. Anyway, this little story is not because you guys would feel sorry for me and leave a comment.. don't worry. ;)

On a more technical note: this is the first time I used a tool to get rid of the "barrel distortion". I used PTLens and to be honest, I'm quite happy with it. In fact, only for the second time since the beginning of this blog, I uploaded a jpg export of the original RAW file, so you can see the difference. You can find it here. Also, I edited the photo in a dark room with almost no light except for the screen I'm working on, so I hope it's not too dark when viewed in broad daylight?

I shot Vanessa during a party while I had been drinking. Usually this shows afterwards :), but nevertheless, this one turned out great. Although I used an f4 aperture, I had to blur the background even more in post to get rid of the distracting elements. This is one of the photos I shot, without tripod, using ISO800. It's the only one of which I could minimize the noise to an acceptable level. The pictures are shot at work in the 'corporate dungeon' as Jay wrote in his comment on the previous photo. I guess, for this one, I was a little inspired by playing 'Dead Space' in the last couple of weeks. Oh yes, this is the 500th photo I publish here on PiXistenZ, so maybe this is a good time to thank you all, for your continued visits here. Muchas gracias!

Almost no post-processing was involved here, I just made the overall color and tone a little colder and a bit brighter. I had shot this exact same photo a week before without a tripod and the ISO set to 800, which resulted in a sharp picture but with lots of noise and this image screams for a very clean noise-less look. Removing the noise in post-processing wasn't possible, probably due to the difficult gradients caused by the light and colors, so I shot it again yesterday using my trusty old tripod.

The past summer we stayed in "La Petite Nice", an excellent guesthouse in the centre of the Provence. In this picture, you can see one of the children with his new little friend. The photos were shot with a Nikon 50mm at f1.4 with available light only, so the ISO was set to 800. Besides a tiny bit of noise reduction (to keep it natural) and a little desaturation of the yellow tones, the picture you see here is pretty much how I shot it.

Now I don't know a lot about musical instruments, but I have a strong feeling that mastering a horn is one hell of a task. About the pictures: they were shot with a Nikon 50mm at f1.4 with available light only. The sun was slowly setting so I had to use ISO 640 which is actually a little too much for the D70s, that's why I had to use a bit of noise reduction. Other than that, no processing at all...almost like old-school photography. :)

Besides a little bit of sharpening and a tiny boost in contrast, this picture is pretty much how I shot it. Yesterday, while shooting, instead of doing autofocus lock (AF Lock), I was also doing autoexposure (AE Lock) a lot of times. No wonder some of the pictures were over-exposed. I love the new camera, but it's time that I read the manual and try out the new buttons and stuff. They must be there for a reason, right?

I shot this with an open aperture at a (very) high shutter speed and still the flash fired using the wireless Nikon CLS system. Something I couldn't do with the D70s and one of the reasons I bought the D300.

This is the first shot with the new Nikon D300 and Nikkor 16-85mm VR lens and I'm really happy with the quality of the photo. In fact, I can hardly wait to go out and shoot more. :)
I shot it very quickly at work (I made only two shots) and without using flash (only available TL light) at ISO 640. I was very surprised to see the low amount of noise, especially compared to my D70s.

In the picture, you can see Manu Delcon, IT consultant and also an amateur photographer like me.

During our holiday in France, we stayed in a fantastic chambre d'hote (bed and breakfast) called "La Petite Nice" which is located in Barjols, right in the centre of the Provence.
La Petite Nice is run by Emmanuel and Corinne, both artists, who came to live in the South of France many years ago. Emmanuel is originally from Paris ("Parisien d'un jour, Parisien toujours.") et Corinne came from Bretagne. I can definitely recommend La Petite Nice if you ever plan on travelling to the Provence.

Last weekend we crossed the border into Holland. Somewhere on the road i saw an old windmill and just in front of the windmill there was this ad for a Golden Earring concert, Holland's greatest Rock Band ever.
I suddenly remembered when i was a kid that i used to ride my bycicle while listening to my Sony Walkman playing "When the lady smiles".
Yeah.. those were the days... ;)

In about a week, we're going on a roadtrip through the south of France. Beautiful lavender fields, small French villages, fine wine, lots of sun, historic cities and the Mediterranean culture and cuisine.... what more can we possibly ask for?

I shot this a few days ago, just before christmas actually. There's very minor tweaking involved: conversion to b&w, a little boosting of contrast using curves and a tiny bit of noise reduction using Noise Ninja. Personally, i'm happy with the result, but.. having a serious cold and a bit of fever at the moment.. i hope this is not interfering with my judgement. Oh well, we'll see tomorrow if i still like this photo :)

Yesterday we went to the Xtreme event in Brussels, featuring skiers, snowboarders, motocross and snowmobile riders showing all kinds of big air jumps and cool tricks. It was fun to watch and afterwards we even got to see and hear Run DMC. Eric pushed me inside the area where only press members and vip were allowed and even though a security guy asked me for my badge, i kept walking and before i knew, i was already between the other photographers shooting from close by. Which was a very good thing because i only had a wide-angle lens with me. To be honest, this was actually the first time i did this kind of concert shots and i was pretty nervous which resulted in the wrong camera settings, wrong flash settings, wrong lens, etc. It's almost a miracle that a few of them were actually not that bad. Anyway, Run DMC started off with 'It's Tricky' and let me tell you that they still rock. :)

During my stay on the island, we did a hike to the top of the active Stromboli volcano. We started climbing an hour or two before sunset, that way, we could see the lava during nightfall. It was so intense to see those huge fountains of lava, some of them more than 10 or 15 meters high(!) and enormous clouds of smoke and ash were drifting just above our heads. We had to wear special masks to protect us from the gasses. A couple of meters next to me, there was this huge boulder that, according to our guide, wasn't there two weeks earlier. I could only think that my helmet wouldn't be sufficient to protect me if a new giant rock would decide to park at the exact same spot where i was standing. All this was so overwhelming that i decided *not* to shoot any pictures but just watch the spectacle while the adrenaline was rushing through my body. The only thing i did shoot were a couple of short clips with my cell phone, just to capture the atmosphere. You can see two of them here (one featuring me wearing a helmet and mask and one featuring an eruption of lava) :

During our trip through Sicily, we visted the old little town of Cefalu. The slang of Cefalu’s fishermen helped us to understand the etymology of the word “Cif-alo”, meaning the start or the beginning. Could it be possible that the mysterious energy sphere has got something to do with the start of life as we know it?..

It's been exactly one week ago since my previous post and i think that must be my personal record. There are two explanations for this: first of all, i've been enjoying the summer and haven't been shooting or processing in the last few weeks :-). And the second reason is that i've been redesigning the krisvdv.net site and that was a lot of work! What has changed? A new menu on the homepage with new items. My blog is now powered by the one and only Wordpress (still work to do) and i've added a portfolio (http://portfolio.krisvdv.net/). It's not perfect yet and i still have to resize some of the photos to the dimensions of the portfolio, but you can already check it out if you want to. For each album there's different music so make sure you turn on the speakers. :-)

What a great weekend we had! On Friday we saw Gotan Project in Brussels and yesterday we went to Rock Werchter. This is a massive four-day music festival with lot's of bands. We were there yesterday (Saturday) and we saw a couple of great gigs, like Amy Winehouse, Snow Patrol, LCD Soundsystem, and last but not least, the Chemical Brothers, who were totally insane, both their music and their brilliant video show. I promised myself to leave my camera at home and do nothing but chill and listen to some great music, but just after Belgian band Goose (their music is awesome!), i saw Jim Morrison (i've always known he was still alive) jumping around and finally falling to the ground and i couldn't resist getting my (new) mobile phone and taking a shot. So here it is and we can all relax now.. Jim's alive and he's fine.

When i visit an art gallery or an art museum like Tate Modern, i always get this urge to shoot pictures and create something myself. ;-) Is this silly? Maybe it is, but i just can't help it. Usually it's also frustrating because inside or around the gallery or building it's often difficult to shoot something which is good, especially because you're feeling a bit intimidated by all the great art you just saw or which is still surrounding you. Inside Tate Modern, i was lucky to have this idea with the stairs. I shot about 10 different pictures all from the same point, but these two are my favorites.
The TTV look has been done with Photoshop, but i'm planning on getting my own real TTV thing to put in front of my lens. I've always been a big fan of TTV photos, so i just had to start with it eventually, even though, at this point, it's a fake :-)

If you want to get to Tate Modern and you don't know the way, then you can do two things and we had to do both: Kathy used a tourist map of London and i asked a poor pedestrian for directions. Finally we made it, but to be honest, we got the idea to visit the gallery way too late anyway. It was the afternoon of the last day in London, which means we didn't have enough time left to see all the art. But, this is also a good thing, because we promised ourselves to return to London this summer and that means i can visit London 2 times this year, yeah!....

At last, after 2 hours driving to Calais, then 2 hours with the ferry to Dover and then 2 hours with the train from Dover to London, we finally arrived in the city center. Splendid!

This is my godchild, Renee. She's about 1 year and 8 months now. Shooting children is so difficult and afterwards you can feel almost exhausted, but it's also very rewarding, because they are real, honest and open, which often makes for a really great capture. I hope you like this one!

I shot this last summer but with the incredible weather we're having here, it almost could have been shot today. :-)
It's a bit of a shame that the big clocks are blown out/overexposed, i think. Let me know your opinion on this, i'm curious!

I've always been a fan of Holga and Lomo. That's why i tried to get a bit of that feel here in this photo without an exact copy of the real look. I used the free Lomo Action for Photoshop together with some manual tweaking.. Let me know if it worked :-)

This is the second photo of the abandoned factory which i visited last sunday, and the strange thing is that both pictures aren't processed with Photoshop. No change in white balance, color tones, saturation, whatever. No filters at all. Nothing. :-)
The only thing i did here was cropping to get them next to each other without much scrolling on most screens! This doesn't mean that future photos of the factory won't be processed, but with these two it didn't seem necessary. Hope you like it!

I shot this picture in Copacabana, the main Bolivian town on Lake Titicaca. It's name is derived from the Aymara "kota kahuana", meaning "view of the lake" and the best view of the lake is after you climb the Cerro Calvario. Because Lake Titicaca is 3,812 m (12,507 feet) high (don't you love Wikipedia?) you have absolutely no breath when you climb up. While resting, on my way to the top, i saw this young woman walking by (the local people have no trouble breathing at all), and i had just enough energy to point my camera and shoot this portrait :-)

Last week i saw Larry Clark's "Wassup Rockers" and without thinking about it, on Sunday, i decided to go to the park and shoot the skaters. Only yesterday i realized it's too much of a coincidence and i must have been influenced on a subconcious level :-)
Anyway, i may have been inspired by Larry Clark, but that doesn't mean the result is good.. so i hope everyone's enjoying this series.

Yeah it was a great sunday with lots of sun. I went to the park to (finally) shoot some skaters. This girl caught my attention cause she wasn't just easy on the eye (or lens), no... she was jumping higher(!) than any of the guys.
There are a few other skate pictures i like, so i'll probably be publishing some more of them the coming days or weeks.

A couple of years ago we travelled through India. I shot this picture after i just bought a train ticket which would get us, out of New Delhi, to Jaipur. I had returned to Delhi from the North of the country (Ladakh) and the monsoon had already started in in this region of India, so we were leaving -again- and this time for the hot, dry and peaceful desert of Rajasthan.

This picture is a remake of an older one i posted here:

The original version was an untreated scan from the negative. As you can see, this new version has been processed: i added textures, light, did some dodge & burn, a little vignetting and i played around with the colors, all this to make the picture more surreal. I guess this is how i wanted the landscape and the light to be at the time i was walking there. :-)
The PP appears to have been a good decision because it's been featured for the "Sign"-theme on WeeklyShot.org. You can see this here:

Almost 2000 years old, the Aqueduct of Segovia (or more precisely, the aqueduct bridge) is one of the most significant and best-preserved monuments left by the Romans on the Iberian Peninsula. This is what you read in the guides, but i can tell you, when you first walk under this bridge, you just can't believe your eyes! In the North of India while travelling through the Sangla Valley, we came across a little town called Chitkul. The town is located at an altitude of 3.436 Mtrs and we weren't adapted yet. Sven is building a new decor for the "Martha Tentatief" theater group and he told me that i could come by to shoot some pictures if i wanted. They're going to play in "Cinema Roma". Build in Antwerp in 1928, this old and recently renovated movie theater is now providing a venue for film screenings, concerts, festivities, theather performances and other events. I'm really pleased with some of the pictures i shot, so you can expect to see more in the coming weeks. :-)

La Alberca is a little old country village declared as National Heritage. It's probably one of the most picturesque enclaves in the Spanish region 'Castilla y Leon'. It displays very narrow alleys, rustic houses made with granite and wood and a few little bars which, of course, serve the most delicious and legendary Jamon Iberico.

We were enjoying the country-side around Pushkar (Rajasthan) with a rented motorbike and we came across these two kind ladies. After a little chatting, the lady in blue asked Kathy to borrow(?) her sigaret lighter, but when we were about to leave, she wouldn't return it :-). You can actually see here holding the lighter very firm in her left hand. :-)

Anyway, on the way home the bike gave up and we had to walk with it to a little village nearby where the local mechanic fixed it. Afterwards when we drove back to Pushkar it started to rain and rain like we never thought was possible on this planet(!), so we had to take shelter in an abandoned house close to the road. You're probably not going to believe this, but we had a really great time that day! :-)
