I shot this one in somebody's front yard. Polite as I am, I rang the door bell to ask for permission, but nobody was home, and well... you know.. I just had to shoot this mushroom. :)

So I unpacked my equipment and when I had finally found the right composition and angle (which was pretty difficult in this case because of an ugly background no matter which direction I picked), the rain started poring down on me. So I packed everything as fast as I could and ran for shelter.

After the rain, I decided to continue and lay down in the grass again to shoot the mushroom. Have you ever lay down in grass only a minute after (very) heavy rainfall?

Right, so my clothes were soaked and people who saw me, laying down there in somebody's front yard, while it was wet, windy and chilly outside, were wondering what the hell was wrong with me. So what? I knew I had a nice new photo to publish. :)

Yesterday evening, while we were driving to this place, I was imagining this explosion of light bubbles in the background. But when I started shooting, I already new this was going to be very difficult.

First of all, I know it's weird, but I still don't have a lens above 70mm. This makes creating a bokeh virtually impossible when shooting full body portraits. I wanted to try nevertheless so I decided to use my 50mm f1.4 lens, since using a very wide open aperture could make the lights very blurry. I was wrong... it didn't. If there's anyone selling a Nikkor DC 135mm f2 lens, please contact me! :)

Furthermore, shooting a jumping and dancing model with an extremely limited depth of focus turned out to be pretty challenging. Especially since it was too dark to put the lens on AF. Ever tried manual focussing in the dark? So, after trying for some time, I had to change to f2.8 which made the lights in the background sharper again. I guess this was technically one of the most difficult shoots I did.

Barbara, thanks for the modelling, you were great! x :)

Except for some color de-saturation, there has been almost no post work.

It was late in the afternoon and we had been walking around and shooting pictures in Dusseldorf all weekend. Do you know that feeling when the whole world looks interesting enough to photograph? When the light is beautiful and you feel so inspired that you could shoot every single scene or image in front or around you? Doesn't mean it's truly the case per se, but nevertheless..... I really love that feeling. :)

We're back from Morocco with lots and lots of photos. Just before leaving, I had decided to bring along my camcorder to film and not take my Nikon camera with me (don't ask me why, I don't know), but as usual, it didn't take longer than an hour or two before I was using Barbara's Nikon D40 and Panasonic Lumix to shoot pictures. Morocco was hot, damn hot, but the trip was worth it. We drove from Marrakech to the South, to the Atlas mountains, and then West to the Atlantic. It was amazing. More pictures coming up.

Luna, looking at the lens with the sincerity and truthfulness that only a child can portray. No faking, no hiding.

This picture is practically unprocessed, besides a little bit of classic curve enhancement. Although the photo doesn't attract attention by means of special or sensational processing or effects, I think it's one of my best portraits so far. Hope you like it too.

It's been a while since I posted anything new because of several reasons. First of all, I have been snowboarding in France and, once I was back home, I've been busy editing footage we shot with the Sony handycam in iMovie '09, which is kind of fun to play with, especially if you add a groovy tune, but also takes a lot of your time. It's not only the editing itself that's time-consuming, but especially the rendering or encoding of the movie in the right format, with the right settings, etc, and of course, when the movie's finished, you have to upload those biiiig files and hope that streaming of the HD content will be fine, otherwise, you have to start all over again. And because I'm just beginning with that stuff, I made a bunch of noob mistakes, so it took a bit longer than it should have ;).
Something else I've been working on is learning how to flash properly. I did a workshop recently with Tom Museeuw (www.fotofolio.be) to learn the strobist techniques and Tom definitely knows his stuff! One thing is certain: the strobist world and the world of shooting with natural light are totally and completely different! I felt like I was just beginning with photography :). The second strobist workshop has already been highlighted in my calendar and until then, I need to practice as much as possible.

It's been a while since I posted a low-fi photo, so here's a Lomo picture from last summer in the South of France.

I'm planning on taking up one or two photography workshops in the coming weeks, mostly focussing on strobist techniques. I'm confident that it will lead to better pictures, because the guy giving the workshop is an absolute master in controlling the light. I'm looking forward to it already!

I shot this on the way home from work the other day. I didn't have my tripod with me, so I had to shoot it while I was leaning against a wall. Luckily, the lens is capable of doing 'vibration reduction' (VR), so I guess that also helped. I shot two exposures: one with a shutter speed of 1 sec and the other with a shutter speed of 1/2 second. What you see here is mostly the 1 sec exposure, except for the luminated windows of the office building, that's from the 1/2 sec photo, because they were a bit too hot at 1 sec.

I wonder if a Gattaca-like society will ever become reality? A world where everyone has a virtually perfect genome. And if everyone looks perfect, will it become boring? Will imperfections become something to aspire to? Anyway, this is the first time I publish a self-portrait, but in fact, it's not really me. It's a digital creation because I've "Gattacized" myself: I removed some facial hair and skin imperfections, I made my pupils a lot brighter, I made my nose thinner and last but not least, my face has been made perfectly symmetrical. I wonder if this would have been the way I looked if I was born in, say, 2099?..

25 floors but nobody around

On Thursday, I still had nothing to post and I try to upload at least one photo every week. So just before leaving the house, I took my camera with me as I planned to shoot something after work. Unfortunately, this didn't work out because I was too late (something for the future though..), so I had to improvise. I thought of a place where I spend my childhood playing soccer and basketball and I remembered the lights on the field when it was dark. When I got there -I hadn't been there in years-, it was pretty much as I remembered it, so I took my camera and tripod and started walking in the snow, still wearing the office clothes and shoes, no hat, no gloves and it was freezing and windy. To make things even more dramatic ;), I was feeling a bit sick. Anyway, this little story is not because you guys would feel sorry for me and leave a comment.. don't worry. ;)

On a more technical note: this is the first time I used a tool to get rid of the "barrel distortion". I used the well-known PTLens (http://epaperpress.com/ptlens/) and to be honest, I'm quite happy with it. In fact, only for the second time since the beginning of this blog, I uploaded a jpg export of the original RAW file, so you can see the difference. You can find it here: http://krisvdv.net/25floors_original.jpg. I wonder if there are people who actually love barrel distortion? Maybe even love it so much that they prefer the original photo? Let me know!..

Also, I edited the photo in a dark room with almost no light except for the screen I'm working on, so I hope it's not too dark when viewed in broad daylight?

I shot Vanessa during a party while I had been drinking. Usually this shows afterwards :), but nevertheless, this one turned out great. Although I used an f4 aperture, I had to blur the background even more in post to get rid of the distracting elements. This is one of the photos I shot, without tripod, using ISO800. It's the only one of which I could minimize the noise to an acceptable level. The pictures are shot at work in the 'corporate dungeon' as Jay wrote in his comment on the previous photo. I guess, for this one, I was a little inspired by playing 'Dead Space' in the last couple of weeks. Oh yes, this is the 500th photo I publish here on PiXistenZ, so maybe this is a good time to thank you all, for your continued visits here. Muchas gracias!

Almost no post-processing was involved here, I just made the overall color and tone a little colder and a bit brighter. I had shot this exact same photo a week before without a tripod and the ISO set to 800, which resulted in a sharp picture but with lots of noise and this image screams for a very clean noise-less look. Removing the noise in post-processing wasn't possible, probably due to the difficult gradients caused by the light and colors, so I shot it again yesterday using my trusty old tripod.

The past summer we stayed in "La Petite Nice", an excellent guesthouse in the centre of the Provence. In this picture, you can see one of the children with his new little friend. The photos were shot with a Nikon 50mm at f1.4 with available light only, so the ISO was set to 800. Besides a tiny bit of noise reduction (to keep it natural) and a little desaturation of the yellow tones, the picture you see here is pretty much how I shot it.

The past summer we stayed in "La Petite Nice", an excellent guesthouse in the centre of the Provence. In this picture, you can see one of the children playing his french horn. Now I don't know a lot about musical instruments, but I have a strong feeling that mastering a horn is one hell of a task. About the pictures: they were shot with a Nikon 50mm at f1.4 with available light only. The sun was slowly setting so I had to use ISO 640 which is actually a little too much for the D70s, that's why I had to use a bit of noise reduction. Other than that, no processing at all...almost like old-school photography. :)

Besides a little bit of sharpening and a tiny boost in contrast, this picture is pretty much how I shot it. Yesterday, while shooting, instead of doing autofocus lock (AF Lock), I was also doing autoexposure (AE Lock) a lot of times. No wonder some of the pictures were over-exposed. I love the new camera, but it's time that I read the manual and try out the new buttons and stuff. They must be there for a reason, right?

I shot this with an open aperture at a (very) high shutter speed and still the flash fired using the wireless Nikon CLS system. Something I couldn't do with the D70s and one of the reasons I bought the D300.

This is the first shot with the new Nikon D300 and Nikkor 16-85mm VR lens and I'm really happy with the quality of the photo. In fact, I can hardly wait to go out and shoot more. :)
I shot it very quickly at work (I made only two shots) and without using flash (only available TL light) at ISO 640. I was very surprised to see the low amount of noise, especially compared to my D70s.

During our holiday in France, we stayed in a fantastic chambre d'hote (bed and breakfast) called "La Petite Nice" which is located in Barjols, right in the centre of the Provence.
La Petite Nice is run by Emmanuel and Corinne, both artists, who came to live in the South of France many years ago. Emmanuel is originally from Paris ("Parisien d'un jour, Parisien toujours.") et Corinne came from Bretagne. I can definitely recommend La Petite Nice if you ever plan on travelling to the Provence.

Last weekend we crossed the border into Holland. Somewhere on the road i saw an old windmill and just in front of the windmill there was this ad for a Golden Earring concert, Holland's greatest Rock Band ever.
I suddenly remembered when i was a kid that i used to ride my bycicle while listening to my Sony Walkman playing "When the lady smiles".
Yeah.. those were the days... ;)

In about a week, we're going on a roadtrip through the south of France. Beautiful lavender fields, small French villages, fine wine, lots of sun, historic cities and the Mediterranean culture and cuisine.... what more can we possibly ask for?

I shot this a few days ago, just before christmas actually. There's very minor tweaking involved: conversion to b&w, a little boosting of contrast using curves and a tiny bit of noise reduction using Noise Ninja. Personally, i'm happy with the result, but.. having a serious cold and a bit of fever at the moment.. i hope this is not interfering with my judgement. Oh well, we'll see tomorrow if i still like this photo :)

Yesterday we went to the Xtreme event in Brussels, featuring skiers, snowboarders, motocross and snowmobile riders showing all kinds of big air jumps and cool tricks. It was fun to watch and afterwards we even got to see and hear Run DMC. Eric pushed me inside the area where only press members and vip were allowed and even though a security guy asked me for my badge, i kept walking and before i knew, i was already between the other photographers shooting from close by. Which was a very good thing because i only had a wide-angle lens with me. To be honest, this was actually the first time i did this kind of concert shots and i was pretty nervous which resulted in the wrong camera settings, wrong flash settings, wrong lens, etc. It's almost a miracle that a few of them were actually not that bad. Anyway, Run DMC started off with 'It's Tricky' and let me tell you that they still rock. :)

During my stay on the island, we did a hike to the top of the active Stromboli volcano. We started climbing an hour or two before sunset, that way, we could see the lava during nightfall. It was so intense to see those huge fountains of lava, some of them more than 10 or 15 meters high(!) and enormous clouds of smoke and ash were drifting just above our heads. We had to wear special masks to protect us from the gasses. A couple of meters next to me, there was this huge boulder that, according to our guide, wasn't there two weeks earlier. I could only think that my helmet wouldn't be sufficient to protect me if a new giant rock would decide to park at the exact same spot where i was standing. All this was so overwhelming that i decided *not* to shoot any pictures but just watch the spectacle while the adrenaline was rushing through my body. The only thing i did shoot were a couple of short clips with my cell phone, just to capture the atmosphere. You can see two of them here (one featuring me wearing a helmet and mask and one featuring an eruption of lava) :

During our trip through Sicily, we visted the old little town of Cefalu. The slang of Cefalu’s fishermen helped us to understand the etymology of the word “Cif-alo”, meaning the start or the beginning. Could it be possible that the mysterious energy sphere has got something to do with the start of life as we know it?..

It's been exactly one week ago since my previous post and i think that must be my personal record. There are two explanations for this: first of all, i've been enjoying the summer and haven't been shooting or processing in the last few weeks :-). And the second reason is that i've been redesigning the krisvdv.net site and that was a lot of work! What has changed? A new menu on the homepage with new items. My blog is now powered by the one and only Wordpress (still work to do) and i've added a portfolio (http://portfolio.krisvdv.net/). It's not perfect yet and i still have to resize some of the photos to the dimensions of the portfolio, but you can already check it out if you want to. For each album there's different music so make sure you turn on the speakers. :-)

Thanks for all the response on the previous photo and i hope you are all enjoying the summer months!

What a great weekend we had! On Friday we saw Gotan Project in Brussels and yesterday we went to Rock Werchter. This is a massive four-day music festival with lot's of bands. We were there yesterday (Saturday) and we saw a couple of great gigs, like Amy Winehouse, Snow Patrol, LCD Soundsystem, and last but not least, the Chemical Brothers, who were totally insane, both their music and their brilliant video show. I promised myself to leave my camera at home and do nothing but chill and listen to some great music, but just after Belgian band Goose (their music is awesome!), i saw Jim Morrison (i've always known he was still alive) jumping around and finally falling to the ground and i couldn't resist getting my (new) mobile phone and taking a shot. So here it is and we can all relax now.. Jim's alive and he's fine.

This is the last of the 'Fjord-shots', all from my Norwegian trip last summer. I just counted them and it appears that i posted 10 different photos, all from the same mini-cruise we did on the Nærøyfjord, the most beautiful "arm" of the famous Sognefjord. When i visit an art gallery or an art museum like Tate Modern, i always get this urge to shoot pictures and create something myself. ;-) Is this silly? Maybe it is, but i just can't help it. Usually it's also frustrating because inside or around the gallery or building it's often difficult to shoot something which is good, especially because you're feeling a bit intimidated by all the great art you just saw or which is still surrounding you. Inside Tate Modern, i was lucky to have this idea with the stairs. I shot about 10 different pictures all from the same point, but these two are my favorites.
The TTV look has been done with Photoshop, but i'm planning on getting my own real TTV thing to put in front of my lens. I've always been a big fan of TTV photos, so i just had to start with it eventually, even though, at this point, it's a fake :-)

If you want to get to Tate Modern and you don't know the way, then you can do two things and we had to do both: Kathy used a tourist map of London and i asked a poor pedestrian for directions. Finally we made it, but to be honest, we got the idea to visit the gallery way too late anyway. It was the afternoon of the last day in London, which means we didn't have enough time left to see all the art. But, this is also a good thing, because we promised ourselves to return to London this summer and that means i can visit London 2 times this year, yeah!....

This is my godchild, Renee. She's about 1 year and 8 months now. Shooting children is so difficult and afterwards you can feel almost exhausted, but it's also very rewarding, because they are real, honest and open, which often makes for a really great capture. I hope you like this one!

I've always been a fan of Holga and Lomo. That's why i tried to get a bit of that feel here in this photo without an exact copy of the real look. I used the free Lomo Action for Photoshop together with some manual tweaking.. Let me know if it worked :-)

This is the second photo of the abandoned factory which i visited last sunday, and the strange thing is that both pictures aren't processed with Photoshop. No change in white balance, color tones, saturation, whatever. No filters at all. Nothing. :-)
The only thing i did here was cropping to get them next to each other without much scrolling on most screens! This doesn't mean that future photos of the factory won't be processed, but with these two it didn't seem necessary. Hope you like it!

I shot this picture in Copacabana, the main Bolivian town on Lake Titicaca. It's name is derived from the Aymara "kota kahuana", meaning "view of the lake" and the best view of the lake is after you climb the Cerro Calvario. Because Lake Titicaca is 3,812 m (12,507 feet) high (don't you love Wikipedia?) you have absolutely no breath when you climb up. While resting, on my way to the top, i saw this young woman walking by (the local people have no trouble breathing at all), and i had just enough energy to point my camera and shoot this portrait :-)

Last week i saw Larry Clark's "Wassup Rockers" and without thinking about it, on Sunday, i decided to go to the park and shoot the skaters. Only yesterday i realized it's too much of a coincidence and i must have been influenced on a subconcious level :-)

Yeah it was a great sunday with lots of sun. I went to the park to (finally) shoot some skaters. This girl caught my attention cause she wasn't just easy on the eye (or lens), no... she was jumping higher(!) than any of the guys.
There are a few other skate pictures i like, so i'll probably be publishing some more of them the coming days or weeks.

A couple of years ago we travelled through India. I shot this picture after i just bought a train ticket which would get us, out of New Delhi, to Jaipur. I had returned to Delhi from the North of the country (Ladakh) and the monsoon had already started in in this region of India, so we were leaving -again- and this time for the hot, dry and peaceful desert of Rajasthan.

This picture is a remake of an older one i posted here:

The original version was an untreated scan from the negative. As you can see, this new version has been processed: i added textures, light, did some dodge & burn, a little vignetting and i played around with the colors, all this to make the picture more surreal. I guess this is how i wanted the landscape and the light to be at the time i was walking there. :-)
The PP appears to have been a good decision because it's been featured for the "Sign"-theme on WeeklyShot.org. You can see this here:

It's the holiday season so we gave a little gluwine party outside on the terrace. You can see a collage here of all the children!
Note: it was shot using my Canon Ixus on automatic (although the flash was covered by a home-made paper 'filter')

Yesterday, we celebrated christmas eve at Kathy's parents. Dinner was absolutely delicious, the wine was excellent and of course there was lots of music and dancing. We brought our sleeping bag so me and Kathy didn't have to drive home afterwards. And when we woke up, Kathy's mom made eggs for us. I don't know about you, but i just love the holiday season! :-)

these were shot while i was sitting in a bicycle-rickshaw using iso 100 slide film, so that's why they're not really sharp. but, somehow, i always loved these two shots, and that's why i posted them, although i don't think a lot of people will agree with me. :-)

This was shot in Crete. After i made a picture of this lady, she started singing for me. Too bad i couldn't understand the old creten song and she didn't speak English well enough to translate. Suddenly she said "I.. love.. you..". I totally freaked out :-) but then i saw she pointed at a cat and repeated "I.. love.. you..". Yep, she was talking about the cat! ;-)

After the heavily processed picture from yesterday, I felt like posting a more natural photo again.
Here you can see Marie waving to little sister Stella & her mom (Vanessa). I had been drinking a few gluwines before I shot this and the carousel was moving, so all things considered, i was rather pleased with the result. :-)
