Kitchen Renovation: How to Remove A Popcorn Ceiling

Hello friends one weary blogger here to share how to remove a popcorn ceiling. I just removed mine from the kitchen this weekend with my sweet daughters help.

First, you need to be sure that your popcorn ceiling has no asbestos in it and if it does I would turn this project over to the professionals. Its just not worth the risk to do it yourself.

Supplies

water bottle

scraper

mask

goggles

lots of drop cloths

and if you really want to stay clean-- a space suit

Cover all furniture and cabinets with plastic drop cloths, sheets, or whatever you want to protect everything. Also, if you are smarter than me you will move everything out and cover your floors also, and then your clean up will be much easier. Sigh.

If you are planning to just paint your ceiling I would not recommend using the water bottle because if you use to much or you scrape to hard you are going to damage your sheet rock and cause more work in the long run.

If you are going to cover your ceiling the first step is to spray your ceiling in one to two foot areas with plain water. (I put water in an old Greased Lightening bottle). This softens the popcorn material (what is that stuff anyway?), cuts back on the powder residue from spreading over your entire home, and makes it easier to remove.

After you let it set for awhile start scraping it off. It comes off very easily. Continue those two steps until you have removed all of the finish. By the way we removed all the vents and light fixtures after I took this picture.

When you get through you will look like this:

Hah! If I had on a darker T-shirt you would really be able to see how dirty I was. lol

Now if you were my daughter you looked like this:

Look at her! The hair is still in place, she hardly had any powder in her hair, and her make-up was still on! And she did just as much as I did and in this picture was going back around and touching up a few spots. Thanks sweetie I love you.

By the way I recommend a scraper like I used it really worked a lot better than a plain one. It is made by W.M. Zinsserman, Co. Inc. I don’t know where my husband picked it up at but there are probably other similar ones out there.

Here is what your floors will look like with about one and one-half inches of popcorn ceiling on them.

It took us about one hour to remove the popcorn from a 10’ by 26’ ceiling and another hour and one-half to clean up.

The best way to clean up if you don’t cover your floors is to sweep up the majority, then vacuum, and finally mop a couple of times. If you mop before you vacuum you will be mopping forever.

Now I just decided today (please don’t tell my daughter) to use real tin ceiling tiles because I found a wonderful dealer online and realized I could afford them. You see that’s what I wanted to begin with but I was going to put up the fake glue up kind and needed the ceiling removed. Oh well sorry Misty.

Kitchen Renovation: Walls and Cabinets

Hello, blogland friends. I’m just stopping in to give you an update on how the kitchen remodel is going.

It’s a big, big mess and driving me nuts but getting done slowly and surely. The upper walls are painted with two coats of white eggshell/satin paint that I already had and the bead board is up and has a thin coat of primer.

First we lightly sanded the bead board as it is rough in spots.

Once it was nice and smooth my helper put it up for me. You can buy this at Lowe’s or Home Depot already cut to the 32” that you need or you may buy the full sheets and they will cut them for you which is a little cheaper.

You apply the base trim first and the bead board slides into the notch at back of trim. The top trim is made to slide in and be flush to the wall as a regular trim would stick out further and not look right. To save money buy the pro packs of trim as they are almost half the price as buying the trim by individual piece. I think a single eight foot piece of trim was like $1.15 a foot and the pro pack was sixty feet for $35.00

At the time I took these pictures we did not have the any of the other trim up yet.

As I said before I painted the upper walls with two coats of an eggshell paint that I already had bought at Wal Mart. The bead board and trim will be painted with Annie Sloan "Paris Gray".

You might ask, “But Peggy I thought you were painting with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint why are you priming?” My answer would be for two reasons. First, it’s a kitchen. I want it to be very durable and ASCP is not cheap and having a base coat will cut down on how much chalk paint I have to use. Plus…well my paint isn’t in yet and I’m chomping at the bit to get started!

My kitchen cabinets are the stock oak from Lowe's about ten years ago. We have the doors all off and I am cleaning them with Greased Lightning which is great for removing grease and yucky stuff.

We numbered them as we removed them (that is what the blue tape is in the hole) and after cleaning them I filled in all of the holes as I was not going to use the same knobs and handles. I then gave them a light sanding.

I then applied some Kiltz primer to all of them and I recommend a foam brush as they apply the primer smoothly and you can just throw them away so no clean up. Be sure to catch any drips but since I’m using ASCP I’m not worried about everything being super smooth or thickly covered.

Another thing I love about Annie Sloan is that it sticks to just about anything and you can just slop it on and it still looks great.

Okay, my next update will probably be sharing how we are making the butcher block style counter tops for one-tenth of the cost of the special ordered ones.

My Kitchen Before Renovation

Okay, let me just say that this is my kitchen not a model home, we live here, and I did not stage anything.

Now that I’ve said that be prepared to be afraid very afraid. This is an early 1990’s kitchen and it is green, yes GREEN.

I plan on achieving a $35,000 looking kitchen remodel, but only spending $3500 to $4000.

This is looking toward the back of the house from the eat in area of my kitchen. As you can see to the right when we did this remodel we partially blew out that wall to open it up to the dining room and den and to add the bar.

I know you’re looking at that green rock floor. lol Hey it worked at the time and I remember thinking that it wouldn’t show dirt and it doesn't you can't find anything if you drop it on that floor! The cabinets will be painted and I am adding details to them to make then look more like furniture.

The counter tops are going to be wood butcher block. Now I wanted butcher block counter tops but when I priced them at Lowe's the cost was $4300! That would totally blow my budget so I will be sharing how you can make your own butcher block counter tops for about $150!

Yes, we have his and her coffee pots. I have to have my Starbucks.

This is looking into the kitchen from dining room. No, my children are grown those are gifts and pics from my grandchildren who get off the bus here everyday. By they way that frig is going, thank goodness, its from the dark ages and freezes all my produce. I’ll be painting my stove and putting in an above the stove microwave.

Oh, how do you like my faux stone black splash? lol That was quite a project, one of my wild ideas, but hey it looked pretty good. I’ll be applying the real deal this time.

In this picture we are looking toward the eat in area of the kitchen. Notice my vintage chandelier with half the lights out they pretty much stay that way as there is a short somewhere. To say the least its going.

The popcorn ceiling is also going I’m putting in a wide bead board and painting it.

The dining hutch I will eventually paint and I’m moving it to the dining room. The vintage dining table spreads out to seat four to six comfortably, and if I decide to keep it I will paint it also.

This piece is going to the shop I believe it was once a Victrola but now it is just a cabinet and the top opens up with a velvet lined area. By the way the floors will be replaced. Aren’t you glad? lol. I’ll explain more about the floors later.

This reproduction sideboard I picked up at a local thrift shop. I plan to paint it and keep it.

Well that’s my before kitchen. I’m so ready for it to go and I have already started the process. I’m Dreaming…Of A Kitchen Redo!!

Hello my bloggerette friends. How are ya’ll? Hope you are doing great.

I’m so excited to tell you that in the next few weeks I will be remodeling my kitchen with the help of my two volunteers (that is my son-in-law and husband) who are both quite handy. Although, they are not carpenters they have both done their share of carpentry projects and I have faith they can achieve the goals I have set. (If not they will never hear the end of it, I promise). Lol, just kidding, ~~maybe~~.

Thanks to Pinterest I can share some of my ideas with you. I have a dream of mixing a little vintage with a little French country.

I’m totally loving both of the above kitchens. The main thing I like in the first one is the apron sink, which you will see in most of these pictures, in the bottom one it is the finish and wood details that I love and I will incorporate both in my little kitchen.

I will share the before of my kitchen in a couple of days you will see it is stuck somewhere in the early 1990”s or is that green from the late 1980’s?

In this picture I’m just drooling over the island with the skirt of metal work and if and when I can find some similar zinc I plan on making one. I also like the faucet and lighting. Are you starting to see where I'm going with my plan?

The next thing I really want are dark wood countertops! I just love them but the ones I really want are very expensive because, I of course, have champagne taste on a cheap wine budget! I will be sharing with you how we get very close to the same look at a fraction of the cost.

Don’t you just love this kitchen? The chandeliers, the apron sink, the pretty green metal stools, and the beautiful vent over the stove, oh my! sigh.

I also like this vintage, rustic kitchen. I’m loving the bar with its chippy finish. Also, those ceiling tiles! Wouldn't I love to find enough of those to cover my ceiling? Yes!

In this picture I love everything but I’m sharing it mainly for the glass cabinet doors. I’m hoping I can incorporate some into my kitchen.

Well those are my inspiration pictures. I’m hoping to get a kitchen with a mix of the design elements I shared above on a budget of $3,000. This will include flooring, countertops, a new refrigerator, and a new apron sink. I don’t want much do I? lol

A End Table Redo For Dee

Hi, how are ya’ll? Doing well I hope. I recently picked up an end table and chest of drawers at a garage sale and I am re-furbishing them for my granddaughter, Deanna.

When I finished the end table I had to stop and share it with all of you as it turned out so cute. Here’s the finished product.

My granddaughter, we call her Dee Dee, is in the process of remodeling her room in black, white, and a deep mauve which seems to be a fairly popular color combination.

Dee loves pageants, big hair, and lots and lots of bling she is a true southern young lady. lol

She is now ten and still easy to please even though she is already acting like a teenager. Here are some recent pictures.

Dee is a lovely, Christian, girl who is truly beautiful from the inside out and we are so proud of her. I, of course, as Nonnie spoil her rotten every chance I get.

Okay, back to the end table I had to add some bling for Dee! I found some scrapbook paper with French typography and decoupaged it on the top of the table and on the top drawer. I then went to the Graphics Fairy and found a crown for my little beauty queen (she's won several beauty pageants not bragging just saying) and an ornate D. Here’s how it looked after I applied all the layers.

It looked okay but needed a little something more. So I added some jewels, and German glass glitter.

Of course with all that bling Dee loved it and can’t wait to get it in her room.

I painted the inside and outside of the drawers in that deep mauve. I’m not quite finished as I still need to wax and distress it a little, but I just could not wait to share it with you. I hope you like it as much as Dee Dee does.

The chest is next and I have a few other pieces in the works and will be sharing with you soon.

Dresser Before and After

I really like the way this dresser turned out. It was a rather plain white dresser but I added some embellishments to give it a brand new look. Here is the after.

I thought I had taken a before picture but could not find it although I did take a picture of the drawers before I painted them.

As you can see it had a very 70’s look. The drawer pulls had little pink flowers on what was suppose to look like a porcelain background.

The mirror was just a plain rectangle nothing special. I wanted to make the whole thing more feminine and shabby chic so I added some small rose embellishments across the top drawer, and on the center drawer a rose swag.

I painted the appliques with ASCP in “Coco” after I attached them to the drawers and then dry brushed them with Annie Sloan’s “Pure White". The drawer pulls, the trim around the drawers, and some of the details of the dresser I painted with a mix of fifty percent Pure White and fifty percent Coco.

The top was painted with the white and also trimmed with the mix of white and Coco. I then sealed it with two coats of Annie Sloan’s clear wax.

The mirror was just to plain for me so I took an artificial rose and painted it in the same colors then used it to make a corsage to hang on one corner. What do you think? The truth now.

Vintage Foyer Table

Hello everyone I hope your week has started out great. I wanted to share this darling table I picked up from a friend. She had asked me over to look at a vintage bedroom suit and I saw this sad little table sitting to the side and asked about it. She said “Oh, you don’t want that old piece.” She couldn’t believe me when I said that was just the sort of furniture I liked. lol

Here it is finished.

Now here is the before.

Sad huh? The veneer on the top peeled right off and the stain was mostly gone so a little scrubbing was all it needed.

The first step was to paint the piece in ASCP “Old White."

The trim around the top and bottom shelf I painted gold.

Also, I had promised on FB to share a new transfer method I just tried out and guess what? I love it! I used a transfer paper called “TAP” (Transfer Artist Paper) and it will supposedly transfer on wood, glass, cloth, metal just about anything. Of course I had to be different and try the only thing it didn’t list. I wanted to transfer onto painted wood.

Here’s how the paper looks its quit heavy.

It comes in regular 8” x 11 1/2” sheets and you print onto the white side. If you would like to by some go here. I chose a beautiful French label from who else but The Graphics Fairy.

The image printed out beautifully, notice I printed it out in reverse so it would transfer properly.

Next I pre-heated my iron, according to the instructions, to the highest, dry setting; centered my image; and started ironing it quickly all over never staying in one place (except when I tried to take a picture with my left hand lol) for long.

It took only a few seconds for the image to transfer and I carefully peeled it back only to see it had been too hot and bubbled the paint in places, and in other places did not transfer.

Obviously the setting was too hot for transferring to painted wood. I applied a small rose to the center of the bottom shelf and used a cooler setting going from linen to cotton but it was still a little too hot. My next project I will set it to medium or even a cooler setting and it should do just fine.

Well, I was upset at first but the more I looked at it and worked with it the more I liked it. I wanted a worn, vintage look and the bubbles and missing pieces were working for me, and it looked like normal wear and tear.

I decided to go a step further and add an antique crackle glaze.

When the crackle dried I applied a light coat of “Old White” again to activate it. Gosh, for such a little table it sure is making for a large post!

Next, to age it even more I applied an Expresso antique glaze and wiped it off with a damp rag as I did not want the finish to be very dark.

To finish I applied a coat of clear wax, then distressed, and then applied another coat of clear wax with a little dark wax here and there to seal the table.

So there you have it a pretty, shabby chic table that looks vintage and time worn.

Hello everyone hope you are having a great week. I’m so excited to have achieved 100 followers! Thank you so much for liking what I do and being a follower each and everyone of you are so appreciated. I read everyone of your comments and always enjoy hearing from you.

Okay, on to your free graphics for this week. Here are some darling valentines for you.

Finally a French typography which roughly translates to “Serious and Pulls By the House and Cio Charaire Paris-Sceaux.” Which uhhh makes no sense to me lol but hey it looks good for a background or decoupage.

A Quick Before & After

Hello everyone and happy TGIF! Hope you are having a good one.

Here is a small project I just finished and carried to the shop.

This picture shows the true color ASCP “Coco”. Some of the other pictures were taken in my booth at King’s Antiques in Shreveport and the fluorescent lights made it look more green than gray.

I forgot to take a before picture but I did have this one from a group I had taken of my furniture that is stored waiting to be refurbished.

You can just see it under the larger table it at least gives you an idea of the original color.

I first of course cleaned it up then applied two coats of the “Coco” paint. I have to say that I love Annie Sloan Chalk Paint but I have not found that it will cover a dark stain or paint in one coat. I applied two coats on this piece.

I then traced an image I found at The Graphics Fairy using carbon paper and painted it with “Old White” ASCP. I also painted the trim and lattice work “Old White”.

After that dried I applied a coat of clear wax (also Annie Sloan) and distressed it lightly. Finally I applied another coat of clear wax and in a few places some dark wax to age it some more.

I’m Still Flippin’ Furniture

Hello my blogger friends. Hope everyone is having a great start to 2012. I have been keeping up with as many of you as I can and have been so inspired by all of your projects and tips. Thanks for sharing.

I wanted to get a little personal today and share something I recently shared on FB. I have been having terrible problems with my back and since we’ve tried everything else I think surgery is going to be in my future. Sigh.

As a result I have not been cranking out the furniture pieces like I usually do. I had a couple of good days lately and really accomplished a lot but today I was just down flat on my back!

Now I know you have your own problems and that is why I haven’t said much about what’s been going on but I felt that I needed to let you know and ask that you stick with my little blog through the next few months. I will be mixing it up a little and sharing more home décor items, crafts, etc… projects that do not require lifting, crawling, excessive bending…you get the picture.

I will have about three furniture pieces to share with you in the next few days and of course my Free Graphic Wednesday. I have trouble just sitting and doing nothing and I’m always making something or trying new crafts.

Here’s one I just finished.

I love doing all kinds of crafts but paper crafts are a fairly new challenge for me. This is a butterfly wreath I made with a large butterfly punch.

First I punched out the butterflies. I then glued a piece of purple tulle to the center of the butterfly and held it over a candle to curl it. After that I attached small silver beads to the antennas and then glued silver, German glass glitter to the edges and center.

I then took a 10” wire wreath and wove my opalescent ribbon in and out of it for a base. I glued the butterflies on to the wreath with hot glue putting them in various directions. It took 26 butterflies.

I made 3 small bows and glued them onto the wreath and lastly I made a small HOPE banner for the center. I believe it would make a lovely gift for a girls room or any shabby chic cottage home don’t you?

I hope this inspired you to start punching out butterflies! My daughter and I are considering making more paper crafts like this and selling them on Etsy. What do you think? I did list this piece on Etsy you may see it here. It is kind of lonely sitting there all by itself lol. Hopefully I’ll have more soon.

Again, please bear with me on my furniture flipping I’m still working just slower and I will be sharing more craft projects along with the furniture. Thanks so much for being my followers and all the best for 2012.

P. S. Here’s a tip. After you finish the butterflies spray them with a clear sealer that does not yellow and it will stop the glitter from falling off.

Favorite Projects of 2011

I hope all of you have a wonderful New Year that is blessed and all that you hope it will be.

I have only been blogging for a few months but I thought I would jump on the band wagon and share the five most visited post of 2011. You may click on the image to visit the full post.

Number five was "Crafty Day & Christmas Décor"

Number four was "Oh, la la" my blue and white French end table. One of my favorite pieces as the wash of Old White over the Louis Blue almost looked like suede. It sold the first day.

Number three was “What A Shame” another one of my favorites this year. A lovely buffet with beautiful cherry wood inlay that had been hidden under a thick poly finish.

Number two was my “Dining Set Reveal” with the faux grain sack chair cushions. You may see the tutorial for the faux grain sack cushions here.

And the most viewed post of 2011 was….are you ready?

“Bird & Roses Buffet”! This piece is painted in ASCP "Versailles" and the top was painted using a piece of old lace and spray paint leaving the wood showing through on the design. Click the image for full tutorial.
