The Slingbox comes with several hundred remote control codes to operate thousands of different devices. Unfortunately, There are times that you may have a device that they do not have a remote control for or a special device, like a surveillance camera, that you need to install a custom remote code on the Slingbox to control your device. This article explains how to install BIN files on legacy Slingboxes, if you have a Slingbox 350/500 then please go to this Article.

If you are not familiar with custom remote bin files they are specially made files that you can install onto your Slingbox for controlling devices that are not included in the supplied Slingbox remote controls. We have hundreds of them available, in our Download Pages for all sorts of devices. If you have tried the Slingbox supplied ones and can’t find one that works we recommend you search or list and try one available here. If you do not see one for your device in the list you can check the JP1 forums that also carry a large number of Custom Remotes.

The remote files are called BIN files because the file-name extension end in bin. When downloading remote codes you may find several different ones contained in a Zip file. For example S2010_PL.BIN and S2010_RV.BIN. As a general rule you should use the _PL.BIN file. The _RV.BIN files were used for older non-US models of the Slingbox, so if you think you might have one of these and the _PL.BIN file does not work, then try the _RV.BIN file.

Installing a Remote BIN file

After obtaining a remote bin file and putting it somewhere on your Hard Drive, you should open up your web browser and navigate to setup.slingbox.com. Once there click on the ‘Get Started’, select the Slingbox you wish to setup then select Configure Inputs.

After selecting which input you are using, you will be brought to the ‘Remote Control Setup’ page. On this page click on the ‘supported devices’ link at the bottom (I know this is illogical, as you are installing an unsupported device, but that was how Sling decided to implement it).

On the next page, select the device type you are controlling. Satellite, Cable, etc. In general, the first letter of the BIN file will define the device type, C-Cable, S-Satellite & V-PVR and it is safer to select the device based on the code letter rather than the actual device. In particular, NEVER select DVD as this gives a very second-rate remote image with some missing buttons. For a DVD select PVR.

Once you chose the device then click on ‘Select Manufacturer’ and scroll all the way to the bottom and select Custom.

After tapping ‘Next’ the next page will ask you to enter the exact path and filename you wish for the remote code you wish to install.

Enter the full pathname and filename into the field. Note that when you type the final ‘N’ of the filename the ‘IR Setup Code’ will fill on with the 4-digit code. Personally I have had problems with typing in long pathnames and making a typing error, so I always put the BIN file into the root directory so all I have to do is type ‘C:’ and the filename. Now select Test. The player will then install and download the remote control and bring up a remote control. You can then test the remote. If it does not work you can go back and try the other RV or PL BIN file.

If you get a message ‘Invalid Custom Bin file’ then the first thing to note is that this does NOT mean it is an invalid Custom BIN file. This is Sling telling you it could not find the BIN file (Q. Why didn’t they use ‘Cannot find BIN file’ as the message? A. No idea.). So check that you have typed in the pathname and filename correctly and try again.

If all is good you can now control the device connected to your Slingbox! You may be taken through a few more setup screens before it completes. One thing worthy of note is that non-US/Canada customers sometimes get asked to input ZIP codes and TV Providers. The service provider information is used ONLY for the Electronic Program Guide and is not needed for viewing or controlling your Slingbox. I tend to use a ZIP code of 90210 (Beverly Hills) and a random TV Provider.

Now the BIN file has been downloaded to your Slingbox it is not required any more and can be deleted. The fact that it now resides inside your Slingbox means that any viewing system you use (Slingplayer, watch.slingbox.com, SlingCatcher, Facebook, SPMobile….) will use that remote.

These Custom codes normally use the default Remote image that Sling have designed. Under some circumstances it is possible to link to a realistic remote image. If you want this then post a request in the forum and we will see what we can do.

If you have issues of something that does not work first check the IR Blasters are actually working by checking them through a digital camera/mobile phone. You should see a nice healthy white flash when you tap on the remote (Check with a real remote first so you know what you are looking for). After that you should review the information in the forum topic: Remote Download Read First and if you still have an issue then you can post a request in our Remote Forums for help and provide the information requested in that post.

New Platform Gives Slingbox Customers Social TV Experiences

2013 International CES

LAS VEGAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–(Consumer Electronics Show)—Audible Magic, the leader in automated content recognition (ACR) solutions, announced that Audible Magic’s Smart ID ACR system will be embedded into the Slingbox hardware platform helping to create an enhanced experience for Sling Media’s Slingbox Companion app. The second screen application was first introduced at CES and demonstrated on an iPad. The addition of SmartID to the latest generation of Slingboxes will allow Sling Media to offer its consumers a range of new social TV and interactive experiences. Set for launch in Q1 2013, the Slingbox Companion app will be available for demo at the Sling Media booth (Central Hall, #8143) at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas, NV January 8-11.

“The entire TV viewing experience is undergoing a mind-boggling transformation”

By embedding ACR within the Slingbox, the Slingbox Companion app will connect viewers to supplemental television show content (like stats during the ball game or real-time polls), connections to Facebook and Twitter for sharing of viewing experiences, and value-added information related to TV commercials where viewers can link to additional information. ACR is being added to the most recent additions to the Slingbox family: the Slingbox 350 and Slingbox 500 models via a software and firmware upgrade for both new and existing customers.

“The entire TV viewing experience is undergoing a mind-boggling transformation,” said Jay Friedman, VP of Marketing, Audible Magic. “Consumers are no longer content to be passive ‘inhalers’ of programming. They want to be actively engaged, sharing their views with others and drilling down deeper into topics they consider especially interesting. And they also want to do this with complete mobility—anywhere any time. In effect, they want to interact with TV in ways similar to how they’ve interacted with computers for years. With the newest versions of Slingbox, Sling Media is taking a major step forward in turning this very natural consumer desire into a very attractive reality. Audible Magic is delighted to be a part of this process.”

“One of the critically important pieces of the TV anywhere puzzle is content recognition technology and making tablets and other displays more than just passive viewing devices,” said Sling Media’s Senior Vice President and General Manager, Raghu Tarra. “Slingbox customers are using their tablets and smartphones more than any other display. For TV to truly be social and interactive ACR needs to be part of the solution. Working with Audible Magic, we’ve come up with something very special for consumers who will now have a richer, more engaging TV viewing experience.”

Customers can play back any personal content stored on the USB drive directly on their TV screen using the Slingbox 500′s remote control.

SlingSync, a feature of My Media, acts like a personal cloud that allows Slingbox 500 customers to archive and store their captured moments onto a secure, compact USB drive while creating more space on their smartphone to collect new ones. With the Slingbox 500 and a smartphone installed with the SlingPlayer app on the same local area network, photos and videos are synced automatically — from the phone to USB drive. My Media features will be delivered via firmware and software updates to both Slingbox 500 and SlingPlayer software for iOS and Android smartphones in the coming weeks.

Slingbox Companion™

Slingbox Companion is a free 2nd screen application that will be available to all Slingbox 500 and Slingbox 350 customers who also own an iPad 2 or higher model. Slingbox Companion will feature content discovery tools that help customers find shows based on their interests. They can then navigate to the selected show to watch on the TV using the tablet app as a remote.

Slingbox 500 customers who have connected a USB drive to their Slingbox 500 can use Slingbox Companion to navigate to photos and videos from My Media and play them on their TV. In addition, Slingbox Companion will feature supplemental TV program content like live stats during a sporting event, enhancing the TV-viewing experience. Finally, customers can share what they are viewing with friends on Facebook and Twitter and see what’s trending on TV. Slingbox Companion will be available this spring.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Dish Network Corp. revealed a set-top box called “Hopper” last year, named for its ability to send the TV signal “hopping” from room to room, covering all the TVs in the house. This year, it’s upgrading the Hopper so that it follows you wherever you go – even outside the house…..

The new Hopper can also transmit live TV programming to iPads, iPhones, Android phones and computers, even outside the home. That’s because the new box integrates, for the first time, technology from Sling Media, a company Dish’s sister company Echostar Corp. bought in 2007. The Slingbox, a separate device, hooks up to a satellite or cable set-top box and “slings” the live signal out over the Internet, to the owner’s PCs and mobile devices.

A judge in a consumer protection case has ordered the maker of streaming video device Slingbox to pay $195,000 in civil penalties and not to engage in unfair business practices, the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday.

The DA’s office pursued the case against Foster City-based Sling Media Inc. in response to complaints that the company failed to honor 1-year warranties for Slingboxes, provided software upgrades that caused the devices to stop working, and did not register with the California Department of Consumer Affairs as a provider of warranties and repairs.

San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Robert Foiles on Thursday barred Sling Media from engaging in any of these practices. The judgment did not involve any admission or finding of liability or wrongdoing on the part of the company.

Slingbox just released some updates to Watch on Slingbox.com that allows you to now install custom remote bin files from other sources to your Slingbox.

Slingbox comes with several hundred remote control codes to operate thousands of different devices. Unfortunately, There are times that you may have a device that they do not have a remote control for or a special device, like a surveillance camera, that you need to install a custom remote code on the Slingbox to control your device. Until now you could not install a custom code on the Slingbox 350 or 500. The latest update has now added in that function.

If you are not familiar with custom remote bin files they are specially made files that you can install onto your Slingbox for controlling devices that are not included in the supplied Slingbox remote controls. We have hundreds of them available, in our downloads pages, for all sorts of devices. If you have tried the Slingbox supplied ones and can’t find one that works we recommend you search or list and try one available here. If you do not see one for your device in the list you can check the forums. In particular you should review the information in the forum topic: Read this first if you have an Issue with the On-Screen Remote Control

The remote files are called BIN files because the file-name extension end in bin.
When downloading remote codes you may find several different ones contained in a Zip file. For example S2010_PL.BIN and S2010_RV.BIN. The Slingbox 350 and 500 use the ones that have “PL” in their filename.

Installing a Remote BIN file

After obtaining a remote bin file to install you would open up your web browser and navigate to newwatch.slingbox.com. Once there click on the Slingbox you wish to setup and start watching it. Once it comes up then click on Settings and then Configure Input.

This may take you through a few steps like selecting which input you are using, which cable or satellite provider you are using. If you are not using s television service provider or one that is listed there is an option at the bottom of the list “My AV Device has no TV Service” select which service you have or no service and go to the next steps. The service provider information is used for the Electronic Program Guide and is not needed for viewing or controlling your Slingbox.

Pick your provider

You will be brought to the ‘Set Up Your Remote’ page. On this page click on the “pick” button.

Then click on the device type you are controlling. Satellite, DVR, etc.

Once you chose the device then click on “Select Manufacturer” and scroll all the way to the bottom and select Custom.

When selecting Custom the next page will ask you to enter the exact path and file-name you wish for the remote code you wish to install.

Enter the information and select Test. The player will then install and download the remote control skin (if needed) and bring up a remote control. You can then test the remote and if it does not work you can go back and try another or continue on.

If all is good you can now control the device connected to your Slingbox!

If you have issues of something does not work you should review the information in the forum topic: Read this first if you have an Issue with the On-Screen Remote Control and if still have an issue then you can post a request in our Sling Player Remote Control Discussions forum for help and provide the information requested in that post.
