Placer SPCA Announces 2014 Board of Directors

Roseville, CA – The Placer SPCA announced the election of its 2014 Officers and the installation of a new board member.

Al Johnson, retired City Manager with the City of Roseville and Consultant and Owner of Al Johnson Consulting, will serve as Board President in 2014.

Johnson has served as a board member for Placer SPCA since 2012. His passion for the Placer SPCA mission combined with his deep-ties in the Roseville community make him invaluable to the organization.

Other officers include President Elect Mike Shellito of Shellito Training and Consulting; Past President John Mason, Attorney at Law; Treasurer Sheila Cardno, wealth advisor of Spectrum Financial; Secretary Mark Davis, president of Sierra View Construction; and Appointee Director at Large Jim Gray, former Mayor for the City of Roseville.

New appointee to the Placer SPCA Board of Directors is life-long resident of Roseville, Denise Fiddyment.

Each member of the Placer SPCA board has the opportunity to serve two three-year terms.

“The Placer SPCA has a 15-member board comprised of some of the most well-respected and professional individuals throughout Placer County,” said Placer SPCA CEO, Leilani Fratis. The Board of Directors is responsible for guiding the mission and vision of the organization and other fiduciary responsibilities. “They serve a very important role to the organization,” said Fratis.

The Placer SPCA, founded in 1973, is Placer County’s source for local companion animal welfare expertise. The organization operates the Companion Animal Care Center located at 150 Corporation Yard Road in Roseville, the Pet Adoption and Resource Center located at 1482 Grass Valley Highway in Auburn and the satellite Cat Adoption Center in Pet Food Express at Fountains in Roseville. Poster and Writing Contest

Roseville, CA – Throw on your creative caps, and get out those pens and markers, Placer SPCA’s Humane Education Department is accepting entries for the Be Kind to Animals Poster & Writing Contest.
Compassion for animals forms at a young age, so let’s get the conversation started early.

Encourage a young person that you know to enter the Be Kind to Animals, Poster and Writing Contest. Geared for 1st thru 8th graders, this contest has something for everyone. Students may choose to create a poster or an essay, which illustrates their compassion for animals. Prompts for age-appropriate themes are provided. Students must adhere to the theme that best fits their age level.

The top 5 submissions will be displayed in the lobby of Placer SPCA’s Roseville Companion Animal Care Center for 1 month after the deadline. Visitors to Placer SPCA will be encouraged to vote for their favorite entry. At the end of the month, the student with the most votes will win a Placer SPCA T-shirt and grab bag, and the chance to have their artwork featured on Placer SPCA marketing materials.

The deadline for submitting your project is March 14, 2014, but don’t waste valuable time; the first 10 entries will win a Placer SPCA water bottle!

Roseville, CA – Many of the things that make the holidays special, including large gatherings, food, and holiday decorations can be hazardous for our pets. With a few simple precautions, the whole family can bask in good cheer.

Please keep the following in mind as you celebrate the holiday season:

1) Poinsettias, Mistletoe, and Holly can be poisonous to our pets if nibbled or eaten. In addition, live and artificial Christmas Trees can contain poisonous pesticides, lead, or other harmful materials that could pose a danger to our pets.

2) Keep decorations out of reach of playful pets. Ribbons and sparkling lights may be attractive to your pets but they can be very harmful and even fatal.

3) Don’t over-indulge your pets with treats. Changing your pet’s diet abruptly can upset their stomach, causing diarrhea and/or vomiting. Additionally, foods that we commonly consume can be poisonous to your pet, such as tomato pulp, olives, mushrooms, and chocolate.

4) Busy holiday gatherings are a prime time for pets to slip out of the house. Make sure Fido finds his way back home by keeping up-to-date and legible identification on your pets at all times. The Placer SPCA strongly advises that all dogs and cats be microchipped, and offers microchip implants for $15 during monthly clinics or $20 during all business hours.

5) Provide a safe and quiet place for your pets during the holiday gatherings. Even the most social pets can become overwhelmed when there are lots of people and lots of excitement.

6) ADOPT, DON’T SHOP – If you or someone you know will be adding a pet to their family, please adopt from your local animal shelter or a reputable rescue organization. There are many homeless animals looking for the best gift of all this season – a loving home.

Halloween is No Treat for Pets

Roseville, CA – People may find it deliciously fun to be scared – but your pets do not. Doorbells ringing, kids screaming, and strangers in costumes can be stressful for your dog or cat.

This Halloween, please keep the following in mind so your whole family can have a good holiday:

1) Don’t leave your pets outside on Halloween, and be sure they do not dart out through an open door. Shy pets should be kept in a separate room when trick-or-treaters visit.

2) Make sure your dogs and cats are wearing up-to-date and legible identification, just in case they do get out. The Placer SPCA strongly advises that all dogs and cats be microchipped, and offers microchip implants for only $20 during all business hours, or $15 during monthly microchip clinics.

3) Keep candy away from your pets. Chocolate in particular is poisonous to dogs, and all candy, not to mention foil and cellophane wrappers, are terrible for pets.

4) Be careful around lit pumpkins. Your curious kitten or puppy might be interested in it, and pets can knock them over.

5) Pet costumes can be adorable, but be sure your pet has the temperament for it. Costumes should not be constricting, cause your pets to trip, or obstruct their vision. If you do dress them up, monitor their stress and irritation levels and remove the costumes if they seem agitated.

Let's Celebrate Our Inner Bull

As part of a campaign to bring awareness and education about Pit Bull’s to the general public, Placer SPCA is offering a Pit Bull Education Class on Saturday, October 26 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Placer SPCA Roseville Companion Animal Care Center (150 Corporation Yard Road, Roseville). This class will discuss the history of the breed, characteristics, breed tips, and common myths associated with the Pit Bull breed. For the month of October, Placer SPCA is reducing adoption fees by 50% for all Pit Bull / Pit Bull mixes. If you are considering adopting a dog into your family, please consider adopting a Pit Bull. A well-bred, well-socialized and well-trained pit bull is one of the most delightful, intelligent and gentle dogs imaginable. In fact, they once held the nickname the “nursemaid’s dog,” because they were so reliable with young children. Some of the most famous dogs in American history were pit bulls, including Stubby a decorated World War I war hero, among many others.

Today, Pit Bulls work as therapy dogs, visiting nursing homes; as protection or sentry dogs for the police; and U.S. customs dogs, working in narcotics and explosives detection. Some even work in search and rescue, including a trio from Sacramento that worked tirelessly at the World Trade Center during the aftermath of 9/11. The majority are cherished family members, who have become very attached to their people, loving nothing more than cuddling on the couch or sleeping in bed with their pet parents.

All dogs adopted from Placer SPCA have been spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and tested for heartworm. All adopters receive a voucher for a free veterinary exam. Roseville, CA – Placer SPCA is holding a microchip clinic on Saturday, August 24, at the Placer SPCA in Auburn, located at 1482 Grass Valley Highway. The first 12 microchips will be given for FREE (limit of 2 per family). After the free microchips have been dispersed, microchips will be implanted for only $15.00. No appointment is necessary. Guests are asked to have all dogs on leash and all cats in carriers.

A microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, contains a code unique to every animal. Similar to a bar code, when the microchip is scanned it displays the owner’s contact information.

“When a lost animal arrives at a shelter or veterinary clinic, they are immediately scanned for a microchip,” said Placer SPCA CEO Leilani Fratis. “When we find a microchip and the contact information is current with the manufacturer, a lost pet can go home that same day.”

The Placer SPCA recommends that every pet have an ID tag and a microchip. Even if your pet typically remains indoors, a microchip is strongly advised. Should an indoor pet get out, they can easily become disoriented and lost.

“Last year, over 2,000 lost animals were brought to our Roseville Companion Animal Care Center as strays,” said Fratis. “We know most of them have people who are mourning their loss and even actively looking for them, but without identification the chances of reuniting lost pets with their families are heartbreakingly low.”

One Month Later - Kitten Van is Going Home.

Roseville, CA – One month after being found near death, a little kitten named Van is on the road to full recovery and he is going home.

Just one month ago, Van was found by a Good Samaritan in the bushes along Vernon Street. According to the report from Atlantic Street Veterinary Hospital, where Van was first brought, each of his little ears had been “chopped off and glued on the tips to stop the bleeding.” His whiskers also appeared to be burned off. Van was transferred to Placer SPCA, where he received medical care from Placer SPCA Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Barb Jones. Due to his need for constant monitoring, he was released to the foster home of Yvonne Anderson, where he could receive medical care and start to heal.

Van was still in shock when he arrived at Mrs. Anderson’s home. In addition to his physical injuries, he was also battling a severe upper respiratory infection and ulcers on his nose, lips, and tongue. These ailments contributed to his unwillingness to eat on his own and he required hand feeding for nearly 3 weeks after his arrival. Nevertheless, this little kitten was determined to make a full recovery.

In addition to the love and care Van received from his foster mom, he was also adored by the furry family members, including Fiona a large and loving pitbull, Molly the Chihuahua, and 10 year old Bernadette, another cat that Mrs. Anderson was fostering from Placer SPCA.

After making great strides in his health over the last month, Van is now ready to be adopted. The Good Samaritan, Burton Gilmore, had expressed immediate interest in adopting Van when he had found him. Mr. Gilmore has patiently hoped and waited for this little man’s recovery. Now, that he has a clean bill of health, Mr. Gilmore will be make the adoption final on Friday, August 16 at 1:30pm at Placer SPCA Roseville Companion Animal Care Center (150 Corporation Yard Road).

National Check the Chip Day

Roseville, CA – We all know that microchips greatly increase the chances that you’ll get your pet back if he/she is lost or stolen…BUT a microchip only works if its contact information is accurate. In an effort to remind pet parents to update their pet’s microchip contact information, the American Veterinary Medical Association designated Thursday, August 15 as “National Check the Chip Day."

“When a lost animal arrives at a shelter or veterinary clinic, they are immediately scanned for a microchip,” said Placer SPCA CEO Leilani Fratis. “When we find a microchip and the contact information is current with the manufacturer, a lost pet can go home that same day.”

If the contact information is not current, and there is no other means of contacting the owner, the chances of reuniting the lost pet with his/her family is heartbreakingly low.

Updating the contact information can seem like an arduous process, but after gathering a few key items, the task is rather simple.

1) First, you’ll need to identify your pet’s microchip number and manufacturer. These items should be on your adoption paperwork. If you are unable to locate this information, please see below for an alternative way to identify these items.

2) Visit the manufacturer’s website.

a. If you have not already registered your pet’s microchip with the manufacturer, you will need to do so now. Make sure that all of the information that you provide, particularly your phone number(s) and address, are correct. This is the information that will be displayed if your pet’s microchip is scanned.

b. If you have previously registered your pet’s microchip, you will need to sign in to the manufacturer’s website using your username and password. Once logged in, you can verify and/or update your contact information in the manufacturer’s database.

Although there are many microchip databases, you will only need to update your contact information in your pet’s microchip manufacturer database.

Unable to locate the manufacturer or microchip ID. If it’s been a few years and/or a few moves since adopting your pet, chances are you don’t remember the manufacturer of your pet’s microchip. Free microchip scans are available at the Placer SPCA Roseville Companion Animal Care Center (150 Corporation Yard Road). It is not necessary to schedule an appointment for a microchip scan. Simply drop in during business hours and Placer SPCA’s knowledgeable staff will assist you.

If your pet isn’t already microchipped, consider attending a low-cost microchip clinic at Placer SPCA. Microchips are available for just $15 during clinics, or $20 during regular business hours. Upcoming microchip clinics include: Saturday, August 24th from 12:00 to 4:00 pm, at Placer SPCA Auburn Adoption and Resource Center (1482 Grass Valley Hwy), and Wednesday, August 28 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at Placer SPCA Roseville Companion Animal Care Center (150 Corporation Yard Road). Ruby, formally known as Tundra, is a happy, sweet girl who has embraced her new forever home in 2 short days! She is calm and loving, eager to please and loves all her new people! She has 2 acres of fenced property she loves to explore when not curled up in the house on her cozy bed. She is playful, well-behaved and we are so thrilled to have her in our family. She enjoys walks, playful romps, her new toys and LOVES belly rubs! Thank you SPCA for the wonderful job you did in caring for her after her traumatic accident. She is nervous of riding in vehicles (understandably so!) but her new mom and dad are taking it slow with short 10 min. drives to help her overcome this fear. Her road-rash abrasions are healing nicely and her new vet, Dr. Fritz, is already in love with her! Thank you again for our new love!!

Roseville, CA – On Sunday, July 14, a truck driving on Blue Oaks Boulevard lost a very precious passenger in what appeared to be an attempt to outrun a changing traffic light. As the truck approached the intersection of Blue Oaks Boulevard and Diamond Creek, the traffic light changed from green to yellow. According to witnesses, the truck appeared to slow momentarily and in a sudden change of heart, the driver aggressively accelerated through the intersection. While the truck was able to outrun the traffic light, its passenger, a 1 year old female Pit Bull was not so lucky.

The dog was riding unsecured in the truck bed. The momentum from the sudden acceleration caused her to lose her footing and she was thrown from the front to the tail end of the bed, where she smashed into the tailgate and was thrown outside of the vehicle onto the moving pavement below. She hit the ground hard, rolling for a few hundred feet before skidding to a stop. Observers were horrified. Two women were driving separate vehicles behind the truck when the incident happened. They immediately pulled over and came to the rescue of this poor pooch. As they waited for Roseville Animal Control to arrive, one of the women drove around the neighboring streets searching for the missing truck. The truck driver did not return to the scene, and search efforts were unsuccessful in locating it.

The dog was transferred to Placer SPCA, where she was renamed Tundra. When she arrived at Placer SPCA, she had several abrasions on her body, including her face, where the road had torn away delicate skin. Despite the speed at which the car was moving, Tundra was lucky and walked away with only superficial injuries, but her injuries could have been much more severe. Dogs who fall out of moving truck beds often incur broken bones and even death.

Under California Vehicle Code section 23117, dogs riding in pickup trucks must ride in an enclosed area or be restrained to prevent their ejection from the back of the truck. If caught, drivers will be penalized with a fine. Regardless of whether you get caught or not, transporting an animal un-restrained in the back of a truck is placing them in a very unsafe situation, states Placer SPCA CEO Leilani Fratis. If you witness a person transporting a dog in an open truck bed without restraints, please contact the appropriate authorities.

Although the scars remain, Tundra is healing well. Despite this traumatic incident, she shows no fear of people and remains very sweet and loving. Tundra is searching for a loving forever family, who will shower her with the love that she deserves. Placer SPCA Urgently Seeks Donations for Pet Food Assistance Program

Roseville, CA – The cupboards are nearly bare for the Placer SPCA’s Food Assistance Program. The organization is urgently seeking donations of dry dog and cat food.

Through the Food Assistance Program, the Placer SPCA receives daily requests for dog and cat food from Placer County pet owners. The food is given free of charge on a walk-in basis when supplies are available. This service ensures that those who are willing and otherwise capable of caring for their pets may continue to do so.

This summer, the Placer SPCA’s supplies of both dog and cat food for the program are dangerously low.

All food available through the Food Assistance Program is donated.

“Food donations may be down a bit,” said Fratis, “but the main factor here is that demand is up. We receive 70 to 100 requests for dog and cat food every month from pet owners who are having a tough time making ends meet.”

The shortage of donated food does not mean animals in the care of Placer SPCA are going without. Through a generous donation from Hill’s® Science Diet®, Placer SPCA receives supplies of food designated for the shelter animals.

Placer SPCA Offers $1000 Reward for Information about Kitten Mutilation

Roseville, CA: The Placer SPCA wants to see the person(s) arrested, responsible for the mutilation of a kitten found on July 9 in the bushes along Vernon Street, near Inglis (major cross street Cirby) in Roseville.

The mutilated kitten was found by a Good Samaritan in the bushes along Vernon Street according to the Roseville Animal Control report. The report also indicates the kitten was immediately rushed to Atlantic Street Veterinary Hospital where veterinarians described the injuries as each ear being chopped off and glued on the tips to stop the bleeding. The whiskers also appeared to be burned off. The kitten was transferred to the Placer SPCA and is now under the medical care of PSPCA Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Barb Jones. Dr. Jones believes the kitten may still be in shock after such a trauma and currently requires hand feeding and careful monitoring. Dr. Jones is cautiously optimistic about his recovery and has updated his prognosis from guarded to potentially good.

The staff and volunteers are horrified that such harm could be inflicted upon a tiny kitten in our community. “The person(s) responsible for this need to be found, in my opinion they are dangerous not only to animals but potentially to people” states PSPCA’s Chief Executive Officer Leilani Fratis. “We know there is a direct correlation between animal abuse and the propensity for violence toward people. Fireworks are fun for you, but frightening for them.

Roseville, CA – You may have a blast celebrating the 4^th of July, but the flashes, cracks, and booms of fireworks can be very frightening for your pets. The Placer SPCA, local companion animal welfare experts, would like to remind pet owners to keep their pets inside, especially during the evening hours.

Fireworks set off near your home can panic your dog or cat, and in trying to get away from the noises they can become disoriented and lost. It is important to remember that many people set off fireworks a few days before and after the holiday as well.

Many local shelters, including the Placer SPCA, see an increase in stray animals in the first week of July.

“We suggest that pets be kept in a quiet, familiar room in your home any time loud noises are nearby,” said Placer SPCA CEO Leilani Fratis. “Even a very mellow animal might try to dart out the door if he is scared by fireworks blasting nearby.”

If your pet does get lost, a tag and microchip may make the difference in getting him or her back home. The Placer SPCA is offering microchip implants for only $15 from now until July 3rd. About the size of a grain of rice, the microchip contains a code that a shelter or veterinarian can scan to obtain a pet owner’s name from a national database maintained by the manufacturer. Placer SPCA Recognizes Heroes

Roseville, CA – Placer SPCA proudly announces the recipients of the 2013 Hero Awards.

The Placer SPCA annually recognizes individuals, organizations, and animals that make extraordinary contributions to strengthening the human-animal bond.

This year, eight awards were presented in total, four of which were presented to local rescue organizations, including: A New Hope Animal Foundation; Angels Rescuing Kritters; Auburn Area Animal Rescue Foundation (AAARF); and, FeildHaven Feline Center. All four organizations are located in Placer County, and work together with Placer SPCA and other local animal welfare organizations to save the lives of homeless and abandoned animals in our community.

In addition to the above mentioned, four awards were presented to furry friends, including:

· Shooter, a golden retriever who saved his dog mom from a near drowning accident.

· Katie, a therapy dog who spends her free time visiting Sutter Health patients in hospital and rehab units, as part of Sutter Health’s Wonderful Animals Giving Solace program, known as WAGS for short.

· Shep, a therapy dog, who works alongside his dog mom at a local senior assistance facility, providing companionship and love for all residents.

· Lilly, a service dog who provides constant reassurance to her family, by sensing and alerting her family of changes to a diabetic teens blood sugar levels.

The hero awards were presented at Placer SPCA’s 12^th annual Funny Bones event. With the generous support of our participants, we were able to raise nearly $100,000! Donations raised through Funny Bones provide funding for the programs and services of Placer SPCA, local companion animal welfare experts.

With a Little Help From Our Friends

Roseville, CA – We are very lucky at the Placer SPCA to have such a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers. Last year, we had 493 volunteers who dedicated a total of 84,739 hours to the Placer SPCA! That equates to an additional 40 full-time employees. Our volunteers provide an invaluable service to the animals and staff at the Placer SPCA, and we are deeply grateful for the contributions they make.

While we receive volunteers from all walks of life and age ranges, we typically have a greater influx of female volunteers. We were very surprised to find that this year, 6 of the 7 volunteers with the greatest number of volunteer hours were men.

Michael Curry, a cat volunteer contributed 522 hours; Larry Monks, a dog volunteer gave 554 hours; Gerald Edwards, a dog volunteer provided 680 hours; Gary Wraa, a dog volunteer donated 820 hours; Bob Crane, a cat and dog volunteer put in 953 hours, and Mike Montero, a cat volunteer contributed 1,096 hours, for a total of 4,625 hours! On average, that’s about 15 hours per week, per individual. Our volunteer who donated the greatest number of hours was Claudia Smith, with a total of 1,106 hours!

We’d like to formally acknowledge and thank all of our volunteers for the work that they do. Your support ensures that the Placer SPCA can fulfill its mission of enhancing the lives of companion animals and supporting the human-animal bond. Roseville, CA – This Easter, instead of giving a live animal, consider giving a stuffed animal—they’re cuddly, cute and require no care. Chocolate animals are another tasty option. “Children can have short attention spans, and “Easter animals” may live ten years or longer says Leilani Fratis, CEO at the Placer SPCA. When children are no longer interested in their new animal “toy,” it is the animal that pays the price.”

The problem with the contemporary practice of buying rabbits, chicks and ducklings as pets is that many of them end up unwanted and neglected. Some are dumped in the fields with the idea they can “revert to being wild” which they cannot. These domesticated species cannot fend for themselves and will die if released into the wild. Many end up being surrendered to shelters.

“Rabbit ownership is great for those who know what they are getting into,” said Fratis, “but bunnies aren’t toys.” If you are seriously considering a pet rabbit for your family, don’t buy on impulse and keep in mind the following:

· Rabbits are not low-maintenance. Their cages or pens need to be cleaned daily, and they need fresh hay, vegetables, and water on a daily basis. They also need to be monitored for health issues.

· Rabbits can easily suffer serious injury if handled roughly or dropped by a small child.

· Rabbits need social contact and do not do well when penned outside by themselves.

· Many rabbits do not like to be picked up or carried, and can scratch or bite.

· Rabbits are active animals with powerful legs for jumping. They need enough space to move freely, and a small cage purchased as a carrier is not large enough for a permanent home.

There is a right time to adopt a pet. Fratis states, “When your family is ready to make a lifelong commitment to a pet, go to the local animal shelter, where the staff can help you find an animal suited to your household.
