Placer SPCA Announces 2012 Board of Directors

Roseville, CA – The Placer SPCA announced the January election of its new Executive Committee officers and the installation of two new board members. Marcus Lo Duca, Attorney at Law, will serve as the Placer SPCA Board President in 2012.

“The Placer SPCA is the best run non-profit organization with which I've been associated,” said Lo Duca, who has served on the board of directors for many organizations. “The staff and the volunteers do an incredible job every day maximizing the resources provided to them to the benefit of companion animals that come into their care.”

Other officers include President Elect John Mason of Gurnee & Daniels; Past President Robin Trimble, CEO of Rocklin Chamber of Commerce; Treasurer E. Howard Rudd, president of Integral Financial; Secretary Mark Davis, president of Sierra View Construction; and Member-at-Large Gail Reinke of NEC Electronics America (retired).

New appointees to the Placer SPCA Board of Directors are Al Johnson, owner of Al Johnson Consulting, LLP and former Roseville City Manager, and Karen Hauber-Grahl, a private practice Speech-Language-Learning Specialist. “I have volunteered at the Placer SPCA for more than fifteen years…it is a privilege to be part of an organization that does such an excellent job helping animals,” said Hauber-Grahl.Each member of the Placer SPCA board has the opportunity to serve two three-year terms.

“The Placer SPCA has an 18-member board comprised of some of the most well-respected and professional individuals from throughout Placer County,” said Placer SPCA CEO Leilani Fratis. The Board of Directors is responsible for guiding the mission and vision of the organization and other fiduciary responsibilities. “They serve a very important role,” said Fratis.

Give Your Pets a Safe and Happy Holiday

Roseville, CA – The halls are decked and you are ready to celebrate a joyous holiday. As you prepare for the holidays this year, Placer SPCA, local companion animal welfare experts, urges pet owners to take precautions for the safety of your four-legged friends.

1. Keep all human food out of reach of your pets. Some of the ingredients in your holiday treats, such as chocolate and raisins, are actually poisonous for dogs. Any unfamiliar foods can give your dog or cat an upset stomach.

2. Keep decorations out of reach of playful pets. Electrical cords pose a threat for pets who chew, while tinsel is a choking hazard and broken ornaments can injure your pet.

3. Keep identification tags on your pets at all times, and be sure they have a quiet area in your home. With changes to their surroundings and increased activity in your home, your pet may experience stress and be more likely to escape. The Placer SPCA strongly recommends microchipping your dog and cat, even if they typically remain indoors. Microchips are available at Placer SPCA for just $20.

4. Do not give a pet as a gift. Pet ownership can be a ten to twenty year commitment, and the new owner should have the opportunity to understand the responsibility, be prepared, and choose the companion animal that is right for them.

5. Adopt, Don’t Shop. If you or someone you know plans to get a new pet this holiday season, please adopt from your local animal shelter or a reputable rescue organization. There are hundreds of homeless animals in your community who are looking for the best gift of all – a loving home.

At the Placer SPCA, all cats and kittens over four months old have no adoption fee during the month of December, and dog adoption fees are reduced by $10 for every year of the dog’s age. A Thousand Paws of Light… And More
Placer SPCA aims to adopt a record 300 animals in December

Roseville, CA –At the Placer SPCA, staff and volunteers are gearing up to find homes for 300 animals this month, a record for the organization for the month of December.

“In December 2010, we adopted 275 animals, meaning 1,100 paws crossed the threshold,” said Placer SPCA CEO Leilani Vierra. “This year we would like to see 1,200 paws walk out of our center on their way to permanent homes in time for the holidays.”

In an effort to encourage adopters, the adoption fee is waived for all cats over four months of age. For dogs, the adoption fee is reduced by $10 for every year of the animal’s age. “We hope this may make someone take a closer look at dogs like Lani, who is eight years old. A lucky adopter will receive $80 off her regular adoption price of $125 and bring home a fabulous companion for the holidays.”

Placer County – During the month of December, animal rescue and sheltering organizations from throughout Placer County will work tirelessly toward finding permanent loving homes for the animals in their care. Placer SPCA, Placer County Animal Services, Friends of Placer County Animal Shelters, Angels Rescuing Kritters, A New Hope Animal Foundation, Humane Society of the Sierra Foothills, Auburn Area Animal Rescue Foundation, and FieldHaven Feline Rescue will offer adoption fee rebates for specially selected adult cats and while funding is available. This is possible thanks in part to a grant from the Placer County Animal Trust Fund. “We have many wonderful animals available for adoption and our collective wish is they all have a home for the holidays,” states Placer SPCA CEO Leilani Vierra on behalf of these groups.

These Placer County organizations know that acquiring the right pet can be an uplifting and magical experience and encourage residents to make a difference in the life of a homeless animal right here in their own community. Vierra adds, “Certainly, there are some folks who aren’t in a position to adopt but there are other ways to support the efforts of these local groups, consider donating, volunteering or temporarily fostering an animal.”

Halloween is No Treat for Pets

Roseville, CA – People may find it deliciously fun to be scared – but your pets do not. Doorbells ringing, kids screaming, and strangers in costumes can be stressful for your dog or cat. This Halloween, please keep the following in mind so your whole family can have a good holiday:

1) Don’t leave your pets outside on Halloween, and be sure they do not dart out through an open door. Shy pets should be kept in a separate room when trick-or-treaters visit.

2) Make sure your dogs and cats are wearing up-to-date and legible identification, just in case they do get out. The Placer SPCA strongly advises that all dogs and cats be microchipped, and offers microchip implants for only $20 during all business hours.

3) Keep candy away from your pets. Chocolate in particular is poisonous to dogs, and all candy, not to mention foil and cellophane wrappers, are terrible for pets.

4) Be careful around lit pumpkins. Your curious kitten or puppy might be interested in it, and pets can knock them over.

5) Pet costumes can be adorable, but be sure your pet has the temperament for it. Costumes should not be constricting, cause your pets to trip, or obstruct their vision. If you do dress them up, monitor their stress and irritation levels and remove the costumes if they seem agitated.

Got a Cat? Don’t Want Dozens More? Spay or Neuter!
Placer SPCA Offers FREE Spay & Neuter for Cats in 95678

Roseville, CA – The challenge: spay or neuter 1,000 cats in the 95678 zip code in one year. Grant funding was provided by PetSmart Charities® that will allow Placer SPCA to spay or neuter 1,000 cats in the 95678 zip code between now and September 2012 at no cost to the pet owners. The target area, a large section within the city of Roseville, is the source for 79% of the cats brought to the Placer SPCA each year.

The Placer SPCA will partner with AnimalSave, based in Grass Valley, to bring its mobile spay and neuter clinic to the Placer SPCA at 150 Corporation Yard Road in Roseville on Monday, October 17 to offer free cat spay and neuter surgeries. Appointments must be made in advance with the Placer SPCA by calling (916) 782-7722, ext. 104 or by emailing volunteer@placerspca.org. Only 25 appointments are available.

Throughout the next year, the Placer SPCA and AnimalSave will offer additional mobile clinics, and Placer SPCA is currently issuing vouchers to residents of the 95678 zip code to get cats spayed or neutered for free at many local veterinary clinics. To request a free voucher, call the Placer SPCA Spay Neuter Assistance Program at (916) 782-7722, ext. 201.

“Our goal is to reduce the number of homeless cats in our community,” said Placer SPCA CEO Leilani Vierra. “Over 2,300 cats came to our center from the city of Roseville last year, and 75 percent of them were unaltered. We know there are many more cats out there having kittens that will wind up in animal shelters or not surviving, and we want to put a stop to it.”

Cats 301: Job Fair for Placer SPCA Grads

Roseville, CA – As many people return to school, the cats at the Placer SPCA are looking forward to graduating from shelter life into permanent homes. The 20 homeless cats who have been waiting for adoption for 90 days or more are especially ready to bring their life experience and education into a full-time job: being a member of a family.

Beginning Tuesday, August 23, the Placer SPCA will be holding daily Job Fairs for placement of these tenured felines. Adopters will receive degree certificates along with their adoption paperwork.

Long-term cats will be identified with diplomas they have earned, including MS (Master of Snuggling), AA (Absolutely Adorable), or MM (Marvelous Meows).

“Our long-term kitties are just as wonderful as those who are adopted right away,” said Placer SPCA volunteer Julie Phelps. “But once someone sees a cat has remained here for over a month, they begin to think there’s a reason they have been left behind.”
All of the Job Fair candidate cats are available with no adoption fee. All adoptions from the Placer SPCA include spay or neuter surgery, microchip, vaccinations, and a voucher for a free veterinary exam.

The Job Fair for Degreed Kitties will take place during all business hours of the Placer SPCA Companion Animal Care Center through the end of August. The center is open Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm and Wednesday and Thursday from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm, closed Monday. Roseville, CA – In August 2010, the Placer SPCA Thrift Store opened its doors to a packed house. One year later, the store has become a favorite for many Placer County bargain hunters.

On Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August 14, in celebration of the one-year anniversary, shoppers will get fun peel-off discount cards that will reveal savings of 10, 20, or even 30 percent off their entire purchase.

The Thrift Store offers a boutique-like atmosphere with an ever-changing inventory of donated, high-quality new and gently used clothes, books, household items, and furniture.

“We knew we were taking a risk by starting a business in this economy,” said Placer SPCA CEO Leilani Vierra, “but we were seeking a creative way to generate steady income as the need for our services increase. Now it’s already been a year and the store is going strong.”

The Placer SPCA Thrift Store now generates more than $15,000 every month, which directly supports the programs and services of the Placer SPCA.

“Everyone remarks how beautiful the store is, and we have very loyal customers we see every week,” said Placer SPCA Thrift Store volunteer Karen Bettencourt. “Shoppers feel good about supporting the animals of the Placer SPCA while getting great deals on great stuff.”

Fireworks on Sale Now - Keep Your Pets Safe

Roseville, CA – The flashes, cracks, and booms of fireworks may be fun for you, but for your pet they can be frightening and confusing. The Placer SPCA, local companion animal welfare experts, would like to remind pet owners to keep their pets inside, especially during the evening hours.

With fireworks on sale already, be prepared now to keep your companion animals safe. Fireworks set off near your home can panic your dog or cat, and in trying to get away from the noises they can become disoriented and lost. It is important to remember that many people set off fireworks a few days after the holiday as well.

Many local shelters, including the Placer SPCA, see an increase in stray animals in the first week of July.

“We suggest that pets be kept in a quiet, familiar room in your home any time loud noises are nearby,” said Placer SPCA CEO Leilani Vierra. “Even a very mellow animal might try to dart out the door if he is scared by fireworks blasting nearby.”

If your pet does get lost, a tag and microchip may make the difference in getting him or her back home. The Placer SPCA offers microchip implants for only $20 during all business hours. Voting took place between March 28 and May 18 by visitors to the A-List page of KCRA.com, and the winner in the Best Local Charity category was announced on Tuesday, May 24. Placer SPCA competed with 105 other local charities in the Best Local Charity category.

“Our supporters feel very strongly about the job we do,” said Placer SPCA CEO Leilani Vierra. “When we put the word out that we were nominated for Best Local Charity and asked for votes, they responded immediately.”

Family Fun at Pet Fest, May 21, 2011

Roseville, CA – Pet Fest is coming to the Placer SPCA. On Saturday, May 21 from 10:00 to 2:00, the Placer SPCA will host a pet-friendly fair at the companion animal center at 150 Corporation Yard Road in Roseville.

This family-friendly event is free to attend, and well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome. Activities include dog games such as paw painting, musical sit, a costume contest, and more. The theme for this year’s costume contest is “your favorite animal.” There will also be a vendor fair and tours of the adoption center. Guests are invited to bring photos of pets to participate in the “So Ugly They’re Cute” and “Cutest Pet” contest. The event is sponsored by The Eagle 96.9, Sacramento’s Classic Rock, which will broadcast live from the Placer SPCA.

Also at Pet Fest, join the Swab-a-Thon by Canine Heritage Breed Test. Tests will be available to purchase to find out the genetic heritage of dogs, accurate for over 100 breeds. This is a perfect opportunity for owners of “mutts” to find out just what breeds are in their best friend’s family tree. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Placer SPCA.

Currently, the Placer SPCA waives the adoption fees for adult cats, over one year. All animals adopted from the Placer SPCA have received a behavior assessment, spay or neuter surgery, rabies vaccine, and a microchip, and adopters receive a voucher for a free veterinary exam.

Roseville, CA – Placer SPCA Development Director Susan Willson was among the honorees for the Sacramento Business Journal’s prestigious “40 Under 40.” 100 finalists were chosen from more than 250 nominations received, and the final 40 recipients were named at a reception on Tuesday, April 27. The “40 Under 40”designation identifies Willson as one of the top local business and community leaders under 40 years of age.

According to the Sacramento Business Journal, honorees are selected based on leadership, entrepreneurship or creativity, accomplishments, and community involvement.

As a young professional, Willson is active in the Roseville and Rocklin Chambers of Commerce, serves on the Leadership Rocklin Steering Committee, and is currently the Board President of the Association of Fundraising Professionals California Capital Chapter.

Willson has worked at Placer SPCA in the Development Department for six years. “We are very proud of Susan’s well-deserved recognition by the Sacramento Business Journal,” said Placer SPCA CEO Leilani Vierra. “Her skill and diligence have contributed greatly to the Placer SPCA receiving four stars from Charity Navigator for five consecutive years for demonstrating fiscal responsibility.”

Willson is the proud mother of two children, ages five and two. Her husband, Peter Willson, also works in the nonprofit field, currently serving as the Director of Development for the Powerhouse Science Center in Sacramento.

“I take my career and civic responsibilities very seriously,” said Willson, “but I also work hard to create a balance in my life with family and other interests. It’s not always easy.”

Roseville, CA – On Friday, April 29, Placer SPCA held the Tenth Annual Funny Bones, an evening of comedy and awards.

Located at the Timber Creek Ballroom at Sun City, Roseville, attendees enjoyed a catered dinner, silent and live auction, the 2011 Hero Awards, and the comedy of nationally known comedian Jeff Applebaum.

Through the Hero Awards, Placer SPCA annually recognizes individuals, organizations, and animals who make an extraordinary contribution to strengthening the human-animal bond.

This year’s recipients included:

• Two local volunteers who provide lifesaving care for homeless cats.

• The Sutter Hospice WAGS program, using human-animal teams to bring solace to hospice patients.

• The UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program, which offered the first veterinary program in the country focusing entirely on the special needs of shelter animals.

• Duke, a therapy dog who visits residents of assisted living and convalescent homes every week.

• Three young boys who helped to rescue a cat who had been lost for 19 days and found trapped in a storm drain.

• The Kaiser Permanente Pet Visitor Program, which brings dogs to visit hospital patients.

• Two PG&E employees who rescued a dog in imminent danger of drowning.

• Waldo, a Placer SPCA ambassador dog who taught hundreds of children about how strong the human-animal bond can be.

Toys Make Great Gifts, Bunnies Do Not

Roseville, CA – Peter Cottontail doesn’t make a great gift. For those considering an Easter present of a baby rabbit or chick, the Placer SPCA asks them to reconsider.

“Rabbit ownership is great for those who know what they are getting into,” said Placer SPCA CEO Leilani Vierra, “but bunnies aren’t toys.” Rabbits can live for up to 10 years and require regular veterinary care, including spaying and neutering, Fuzzy baby chicks grow into gangly, less-cute chickens.

“We want to discourage people from thinking of pets of any kind as disposable,” said Vierra. “We don’t want to see an increase in the number of unwanted rabbits or chickens after the spring holiday.”

The Placer SPCA and other local bunny rescue groups offer rabbits for adoption. If you are seriously considering a pet rabbit for your family, don’t buy on impulse and keep in mind the following:

• Rabbits are not low-maintenance. Their cages or pens need to be cleaned daily, and they need fresh hay, vegetables, and water on a daily basis. They also need to be monitored for health issues.

• Rabbits can easily suffer serious injury if handled roughly or dropped by a small child.

• Rabbits need social contact and do not do well when penned outside by themselves.

• Many rabbits do not like to be picked up or carried, and can scratch or bite.

• Rabbits are active animals with powerful legs for jumping. They need enough space to move freely, and a small cage purchased as a carrier is not large enough for a permanent home.

Rebates for Rescues
Placer SPCA Partners with Local Animal Welfare Organizations to Rebate Cat Adoption Fees

Roseville, CA – During the month of April, Placer SPCA, thanks in part to a grant from the Placer County Animal Trust Fund, is offering a rebate of the adoption fee, up to $89.00, for adult cats adopted from a number of area animal welfare, rescue and sheltering organizations.

“The important thing is that cats are finding forever homes,” said Placer CEO Leilani Vierra. “Whether they are adopted from us or from other groups, we want to encourage people to adopt adult cats in Placer County.”

Placer SPCA is currently waiving the adoption fee for adult cats adopted from its Roseville and Auburn locations. In an effort to promote cat adoptions county-wide, Placer SPCA has collaborated with Placer County Animal Services, Friends of Placer County Animal Shelters, Angels Rescuing Kritters, A New Hope Animal Foundation, Humane Society of the Sierra Foothills, Auburn Area Animal Rescue Foundation, and FieldHaven Feline Rescue. All of the participating organizations are facing the challenges of an ever-increasing number of homeless cats and kittens throughout Placer County.

Adopters can obtain a rebate voucher from the adoption agency and submit it to the Placer SPCA in Roseville to receive a rebate check of up to $89.00 when they adopt an adult cat (one year or older), with a limit of two per household.

Roseville, CA – On March 18, Placer SPCA opened the doors to the Pet Adoption and Resource Center in Auburn. The new Center is at 1482 Grass Valley Highway in Auburn in the Creekside Center, and it will be open from 12:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. seven days a week.

The 2,500 square foot facility is modern and attractive, featuring spacious cage-free adoption rooms for cats and dogs. There is also an education room and dog training area, which will allow Placer SPCA to offer enhanced behavior and educational programs to the residents of the foothills of Placer County.

“The cats have appeared relaxed and comfortable exploring their new spaces,” said Placer SPCA CEO Leilani Vierra. “This kind of environment, where the animals have a chance to play and interact, is really the future of sheltering.”
