Ormoc City, Leyte

Ormoc City is a 1st class city in the province of Leyte, Philippines. The city's name is derived from ogmok, an old Visayan term for lowland or depressed plain. It is the first non-provincial city of the Philippines. According to the 2007 census, it has a population of 177,524 people. Ormoc is the economic, cultural, commercial and transportation hub of western Leyte.

Ormoc City is an independent component city, not subject to regulation from the Provincial Government of Leyte. However, the city is part of the congressional district IV of Leyte together with Albuera, Kananga, Merida, and Isabel towns.

Ormoc City is not exactly a major tourist destination in the Philippines, but it is a growing agricultural and industrial center. The city is located on the western end of the province of Leyte in the Visayan Region of the Philippines. Ormoc is also known for its excellence with regard to its educational institutions. It is more of a cultural, commercial, and economic center of western Leyte.

Though the city is evidently not geared up as a major tourist destination in the country, there are a few interesting sights to see here. Those who love nature trails will enjoy have a swell time when they try the rainforest tour. The trail is a trek through a rainforest, lakes, and waterfalls. Lake Danao, in particular even has a floating restaurant and some boats for rent.

Those who are willing to face the challenge and bring out their swinging skills can have a whack at it at the Leyte Golf and Country Club. Visitors can stroll and have a picnic in the Centennial Park, which is also a popular rendezvous for the local folks. Other notable sights in Ormoc City include the Tongonan Hotsprings National Park and the Pineapple Plantation.

Merida, Leyte

One of the most beautiful and scenic towns in Leyte. Merida is famed for its pristine beaches, clear waterfalls, and lush tropical gardens. The dozens of beaches and shoreline waters in Merida are incredible! Offshore, the beautiful, gleaming, turquoise sea with its warm tropical water is more inviting than any swimming pool on a steaming hot day. A tranquil town with friendly locals, this place is where Filipinos wear a smile!

Merida is a 4th class municipality in the province of Leyte, Philippines. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 25,326 people in 5,622 households.

Isabel, Leyte

The municipality of Isabel is the site of the Leyte Industrial Development Estate (LIDE), a fully developed industrial area, which houses two of the country's major industries, the Philippine Associated Smelting and Refining Corporation (PASAR), and the Philippine Phosphate Fertilizer Corporation (PhilPhos). PASAR, a world-class refining company, produces copper cathodes. Among its by-products are dore metal, sulfuric acid and selenium powder. PhilPhos, on the other hand, is the largest producer of high grade fertilizer in Asia today. It also produces as by-product, gypsum, which is currently being used by the cement industry.

The municipality of Isabel is located in the western part of Leyte Province. It is surrounded by Palompon, Leyte on the north and the west; Ormoc Bay and Merida, Leyte on the south; and Ormoc City and Merida, Leyte on the east.Isabel is a coastal town which has a total land area of 9,750 hectares. Its terrain is generally considered as flat lands. The municipality has 24 barangays.

Based on the 2000 Census of Population, the municipality has a total population of 38,486 with an average annual growth rate of 1.36 percent from 1995-2000. It has 8,303 households. In 2003, its population was estimated at 42,695. Majority of the people speak Bisaya and Cebuano.

Villiaba, Leyte

The Villaba, Leyte, is discoverd by Boholano the merchants. The Boholano businessmen went to west coast and found healthy crops, since then, they make their houses into the river and the countryside and it will flourish. Kalanggaman Island

Kalanggaman is a small island paradise with a land area of about two hectares situated between north of Cebu and Leyte. Belonging to the town of Palompon, Leyte, it is about an hour ride by boat either from Palompon or Villaba,Leyte. What makes this island unique is that it has two sand bars , one which protrudes towards the east and the other at the southern end. The eastern sand bar stretches for more than 200 meters into the sea, while the other one is only half as long which is submerged under water during high tides.

As one approaches Kalanggaman island from the north, the eastern sand bar stretches very much longer than the island itself. The sand bar stretches out far into the shallow waters. Just like in Boracay, the white sand does not get hot even at the scorching heat of the day.

Palompon, Leyte

The town of Palompon is one of the oldest coastal settlement in northwestern Leyte.It existed for more than four centuries already.

Palompon is a 2nd class municipality in the province of Leyte, Philippines. According to the 2000 census Palompon has a population of 50,754 people in 10,790 households.

Palompon is 124 Kilometer (road distance) from Tacloban City, the provincial capital of Leyte Province, 66 Kilometers from Ormoc City, the commercial growth center of the western coast of Leyte province and 72 nautical miles from Cebu City. The land area of Palompon is 128.46 Kilometers, or 12,845.58 hectares. The municipality has fifty (50) barangays, ten (10) of which, are poblacion barangays of an area of approximately two square kilometers. The other (40) barangays are distributed along the coastline and the interior rural and mountainous areas.
