I’ve had a love/hate relationship with ‘quick release’ mechanisms – they can be great, but they rarely satisfy me completely. This new Kwik Release from Kessler Crane looks like it may be close to the ultimate quick release. Drop in!

A Closer Look: The Kessler Crane Kwik Release System

Can't see the video in your RSS reader or email? Click Here!

What do you think?

I love the drop in and that it won’t slide out the front or back. I have the manfrotto 561BHDV monopod with head and I dislike how the lock on the quick release is often under the camera. This would solve that!

What do you think?

DPreview Canon EOS 5D Mark III

From Canon EOS 5D Mark III review: Digital Photography Review

Just Posted: Our Canon EOS 5D Mark III review. The 22.3MP 5D Mark III appears to offer similar specifications to 2008′s 5D Mark II. However, sensor and processing developments, along with a host of user-interface revisions mean the Mark III is a much more capable camera. It also gains a greatly-improved autofocus system. So do these changes justify the considerably higher price tag? Read our full review to find out.

Comparison of the Canon EOS 5D Mark III and Nikon D800

DPreview summary of the Nikon D800

also from this DPreview review of the Nikon D800

One of the few obvious physical differences between the D800 and the Canon EOS 5D Mark III is that the D800 has a built-in flash whereas the 5D Mark III doesn’t. Both cameras share very similar proportions and the D800 weighs only 50 grams less. Both have 3.2 inch rear LCDs, with the 5D Mark III boasting a higher screen resolution of 1.04 million versus 921,000 pixels in the D800.

Under the hood of course is where the most notable difference lies. The D800′s 36.3MP sensor surpasses the pixel count of the 22.3MP 5D Mark III, as well as every other 35mm-format DSLR currently on the market. The D800 also offers a useful DX (APS-C) crop mode which captures 15.3MP stills. While the D800 inherits the 51-point AF system of the D4 with 15 cross-type points, the 5D Mark III sports a 61-point AF system shared with the EOS-1D X, in which 41 of these are cross-type points. The D800 has an edge in flexibility, however, when it comes to the aperture required for these cross-type points to function. While the 5D Mark III requires a minimum aperture of f/4, the D800 can utilize 9 of its center cross-type points at an aperture as narrow as f/8.

So there you go!

Interesting to see that they’ve essentially rated the two cameras the same isn’t it? What do you think?

I certainly love my Canon EOS 5D Mark III! I know many of you don’t think it is that much of a step up from the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, but I’m very very impressed with the image, the autofocus and the video.

I’d love to get my hands on the Nikon D800 too to compare!

Shot with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, it packs a message about farming, and is an ad for a restaurant, but that’s not the point… there’s a boatload of man-time in creating something like this – amazing dedication if you ask me! In the BTS video at the bottom of the post, you hear about the whole process – and one little snippet: There are 842 trees in this short – all made by hand! Heck, even the planning that went into this is mind boggling.

BTS

Some behind the scenes info from the page where I found it…

Chipotle’s “Back to the Start” Ad Shot With Canon 5D Mark II DSLR

I went to see Killer Elite this weekend. Before the show and trailers was this beautiful 2-minute animation depicting a farmer’s life: his little pig farm growing into a successful, industrialized livestock factory, when in a pang of consciousness he realizes he’s been doing it wrong. He needs to go “back to the start”. And there, it ties in to the hook of Coldplay’s “The Scientist” which is stunningly rendered by Willie Nelson. It all passes by as a single tracking shot, tagged with a sign that reads “Cultivate a Better World”.

http://youtu.be/aMfSGt6rHos

Chipotle has shared a behind the scenes look into the production of this stop-motion animated ad, and while watching it i spotted a Canon DSLR, which appears to be the 5D Mark II, obviously shooting stills and not video (stop motion).

If you’ve ever tried to photograph the moon, imagine doing an entire month and merging them all together. I’m sure the Canon EOS 5D Mark II helped a lot too

From Forrest Tanaka:

I photographed the moon with a DSLR on a 4″ Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope each night for a lunar month, from the full moon on January 8 through February 5, 2012. I adjusted all their exposures, angles, and positions in the frame in post-processing, then merged each image using morphing software to make the transitions smoother and to take care of the moon’s libration (wobble during orbit). I combined all these into one video for the complete month. I did miss a day here and there because of cloud cover.

In Forrest’s post, he’s got a lot of details on how he adjusted for the changes in size of the moon thru the month, exposure, angles, and more.

Since November 2011 I’d been thinking about an astrophotography project: take a photo of the moon each day from full moon to full moon, then combine it into a seamless movie that looks as if someone had moved the sun around the moon for one minute. I found similar videos, but most were simulations done in software, or photographic ones that weren’t very smooth. Seemed simple enough, mostly because I didn’t see the complications that would come along with this project caused by…physics.

My plan involved setting the same exposure each night starting with the full moon, and let the moon’s dark side gradually move across its face while the lit side stayed about the same brightness. Adjust the photos’ angles to match each other, throw all of them into Final Cut Pro X and add cross dissolve transitions between them, and I’d get a smooth movie showing every phase of the moon.

Not long after Barry Andersson and I decided to shoot “Incident on Marmont Avenue” with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, I thought it would be great to keep a ‘production diary’ and my plan is to share it with you – but not all at once as that would be a book (I’ve written over 13,000 words in my draft!). The production itself has been an incredible learning experience and I know many of you will be interested to follow along.

In this third entry, we start talking about budget and figuring out if we can get some sponsors to help with financing.

March 4th (Sunday)

Our plan is to make a great short with a low budget – something that can be shot by anyone with an HDSLR, something done with a small crew. We hope it can be an example for others.

However, we also want to make a big splash! So we have to figure out how to make that happen.

It is obvious that in order to make a big splash, we’re going to have to pull out all the stops and pull in plenty of favors. That’s what it takes to get a movie done anyway right? You’ve seen plenty of shorts shot on a budget of “$1000″ or something small – but we often don’t include favors that get exercised – possibly someone that will help for free or a reduced budget because they either need the work experience or just love the project and want to help.

When Vincent Laforet produced “Reverie” three plus years ago, he invested $5k and look where that got him! Tho I don’t have any expectations that this project will have the same impact purely from the fact that it is shot on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III; it won’t. So what can we do to make it interesting and unique?

But producing this project will give us both tons of experience which we’ll be able to use on other projects. It will help me understand the process better (tho I know all the steps, I’ve never experienced them personally) plus, shooting this will give me a ton of material for the blog. Readers love the ‘behind the scenes’ material, so we’ll have plenty to post (as long as I do a good job of documenting along the way ha!).

One of the biggest ideas we’re toying with is to use a “name” actor – you know, an actor or two that people will recognize. I’m sure not too sure what to make of this idea at this point… it could be a real gamble, or it could make a big difference.

Here’s where our original stated goal (making a movie anyone could shoot) and our desire to make a ‘splash’ kind of collide. In order to get a name actor, we’re going to have to find some funding. My “little” $5k project has just bloomed into a much larger project! I don’t want to ask Barry yet just how much… let’s see where this thing goes!

Barry and Janie have told me there’s a plot outline and they’ve started on the script. We run thru the concept on the phone and before they go any further, they want my approval on the idea.

The plot is intriguing and should grab your attention and hopefully will make you think. I approve. It will be exciting to see this turned into a movie.

By the time you read this, you will have hopefully seen the short and will know if we’ve succeeded with that.

We’re also now talking about courting some sponsors (vendors in the film biz) to see if we can get some additional money to make this ‘splash.’ Barry notes that it is much like the chicken and the egg… we can’t get name actors without money and we can’t get sponsors without having some names to drop. We start drawing up a list of vendors to approach and start drafting a letter to send to them to tell them about the project and to ask for support.

This is sure something I’ve never done!

Coming tomorrow:

“Incident on Marmont Avenue” – Production Diary #4 – asking for money isn’t easy!

The Perfect Photography Shooter’s Bag holds an iPad or MacBook Air

Santa Rosa, Calif. – Think Tank Photo announces that in May it will release its new Retrospective® 7 shoulder camera bag in three color options. Designed for standard DSLR systems, its classic design along with modern improvements create the perfect shooter’s bag. This lightweight shoulder bag comes in fabrics that offer a sense of “retro” style that appeals to many. A rear pocket has been designed to hold an iPad or an 11” MacBook Air.

Ergonomically designed to conform to the body, the bags are comfortable to walk with, provide quick access, and are inconspicuous to avoid unwanted attention. With broad appeal, the Retrospective series has quickly become one of the leading bag collections in the industry.

“Working pros to vacationers all will find the Retrospective 7 to be the most useful and functional bag for a day’s outing,” said Doug Murdoch, Think Tank Photo’s co-founder and lead designer. “It combines the broad appeal of the Retrospective design with the perfect size for carrying camera gear and your laptop or iPad.”

Along with the current fabric option of black polyspun or Pinestone canvas, Think Tank is introducing a new canvas color to the Retrospective line: Slate Blue.

Review from Scott Bourne at Photofocus

When I was at WPPI in February, I ran into one of the founders of ThinkTank. If you’re a regular reader of this site then you already know that I am a big fan of the ThinkTank products. They are designed by working professional photographers – not marketers who think they know how to sell you something.

I used the original ThinkTank roller – the Airport Addicted for many years. The day I stopped using it – it looked like it was brand new even though it had flown around the world.

I switched out of that larger bag because as I’ve gotten older (and wiser) I’ve started carrying less gear. It’s easier on my back and frees me up to spend more time thinking about the vision and story in my images than the gear. It also helps with travel to destinations like Alaska which are typically served by smaller carriers with smaller overhead bins.

Enter the Think Tank ~ Airport International V 2.0. This is a bag that will fit on almost any plane, but will hold enough gear to get you through most shoots. It’s extremely well made and features all of ThinkTank’s usual great design sense along with top-flight zippers,

I was blessed to be one of the judges of the American Photographic Artist Members Short Video Contest back in early April and I thought it would be fun to see the winners! Many of these entries were shot by folks who are photographers learning video.

But before we get to the long list of winners, I also thought you might be interested to see my picks and why…

I was judging “Best Of” and these were my top picks (in this order).

“The City Exposed: Trumpet Kid by Mike Kepka” – Mike knows how to tell a wonderful story! He’s got fabulous framing and production value and can tell the story quickly and with passion. A great example of doing it all well. The audio and video are wonderful.

Can't see the video in your RSS reader or email? Click Here!

a close second for me was “The Promise / Tom Seawell” – I like this because of the story (documentary style) as well as the lighting and framing.

Can't see the video in your RSS reader or email? Click Here!

third was the one that got the most votes amongst all the judges “Lucky” – beautiful cinematography and editing/pacing. Great short documentary piece.

Can't see the video in your RSS reader or email? Click Here!

fourth “The Break” – it is simple and predictable, but well done – both with framing and storytelling.

Can't see the video in your RSS reader or email? Click Here!

In this second entry, we’ll discuss the early planning as well as needing a camera to shoot with.

Monday, Feb 27 thru Friday March 2nd:

I didn’t accomplish much on the film this week tho Barry and Janie did.

For me, the week was filled with busting my fanny trying to create content for the blog about the Canon EOS 5D Mark III that would be announced at midnight Friday morning (Thursday night). I was working with Canon to get final details and answers to questions. There’s a lot to do when you’re putting together all of the regular blog posts for the week (you have to pretend nothing special is going on so you have to produce what you normally would have produced) plus 6 special posts for the 5D3 announcement!

Barry and his wife were tossing around a bunch of script ideas but they’re not sharing it with me right now – allowing me to concentrate on the blog and the Canon EOS 5D Mark III announcement.

It quickly dawns on us tho that even before the 5D3 is announced that in order to produce the short, we’ve got to have a camera!

Getting a camera

I’ve been talking with Canon about how to get a camera and it looks like we’re not on the top of the list for a loaner. Canon has tons of pre-existing relationships with other photographers and filmmakers and since planet5D is relatively new to the game (tho planet5D is over 3 years old, it is only recently that we’ve gotten access to early info from Canon) and tho we’re very popular with readers, their existing relationships shouldn’t really be broken. I’d be upset if Canon bumped me down the list for some whiper snapper young upstart blogger so I understand why I’m not at the top of the list (yet). So we won’t be getting a loaner or two and Canon won’t be sponsoring us like they have some others.

It looks like getting a camera or two (would be good to have a backup!) for this project will come down to trying to buy our own cameras. The rental houses aren’t likely to have them either as early as we want to shoot.

We’re told (and Canon put it in the press release) that cameras should be available by the end of March and we want to have the film ‘in the can’ before NAB – so we’re going to have to hustle. Heck, it may be really tight – especially if they’re not going to ship until the end of the month!

We’d love to have a camera before the production release, but that’s not looking good. So, our target is to shoot the week of March 26th. That leaves us just under 4 weeks to get a camera, write a script, find actors etc. This is going to be hectic!

We’re planning to go back to LA to shoot the film because that’s where Barry’s filmmaking relationships are and where we can find the most talent.

Also, it dawned on me this week that I could still manage to cover the news at NAB, but only if I were to work with another blogger who was already going to cover it like I would have. I’ll have to see what I can figure out!

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III announcement on March 2nd comes quickly and the blog is slammed with traffic! Good thing that I contacted my host (HostDuplex – if you need a place to host your site, you MUST call Sam at HostDuplex. I’ve never seen such incredible support!) and warned him the site would be getting 10x its normal traffic or more (turned out to be much more!).

So the next two days were spent dealing with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III traffic as well as answering questions, tweeting about the 5D3 etc. So let’s move on.

Coming tomorrow:

“Incident on Marmont Avenue” – Production Diary #3 – beginning to think about budget and sponsors.
