I count at least 3, 2 of which are on the way from my house to the station. You can say there are no hotels in Wimbledon Village, but that is not the same thing!

Nice to know the rental rate has dropped... :(

rodscott said: Unfortunately those who run the local newspaper you refer to did not, in accordance with their usual anti conservative bias, print my letter in full and extracted to headline the one statement which by itself in isolation gives the impression that I think the conservatives should have the mayoralty because the wimbledon side of the borough pays more tax. In fact for the last 19 years Labour have held on to the mayoralty except for one year and all but one of the labour mayors (I believe) have been from Mitcham. The case for Wimbledon and conservative mayors rests on first, the point above (too much labour), secondly the conservatives have the most council seats of any party in the borough, 30 out of 60 and control of the council except the mayor, third in the last council election conservative votes outnumbered considerably, those cast for labour plus independent and fourthly that wimbledon does pay more council tax than the other half of the borough and is subjected by labour and independents to `taxation without representation` in mayoral terms. Oh, and Merton Park, which produces self styled `independent` candidates is conservative in all other elections eg, for the MP, for Boris and assembly and for Europe. Thus is is inconsistent to say the least that on the council, they support Labour!!
If you check, you will find that up and down the country, councils come to sensible decisions on the mayor, eg councillors irrespective of party by seniority, turn and turn about etc. Merton with its insecure class war labour machinations is extremely unusual. Cheerio! Rod Scott

Nadine said: The Grange, in a nut shell, is only a beautifully looking place. The service is horrible and the waitresses are simply lazy. I have had my birthday dinner booked in there and I was so embarrassed I chose it.
I came into the pub to find them seating my friends in an awful 3 attached tables facing the kitchen and the toilets (a place where 1 table, usually with no people, existed)-- in other words a place where no one sits in not even for a quick beer. I have asked 3 times to move upstairs or to go out in the garden. Their excuse was that it was full. Though I reminded them that I booked a week ago, and I asked for the garden if it was sunny or the restuarant but ever the pub, however, it was to no avail. At the end, I personally went out to the garden to try and find a place and I actually found out that the summer house was all vacant...not a single person was in it. So I asked if I can sit there, and their only answer was they can't serve after 10pm. As it was 7pm I decided to move there with my friends.
The service was bad. the waitresses found it hard to smile and it was obvious that they didn't have the skill of waitering or providing services. They didn't bring the birthday cake or the cutlery to the table, my partner had to do that.
Next day, I call them to say I'd forgotten a gift in a red bag, and they say that the cleaner must have thrown it away....I phone again hoping to speak to a more sensible person and they say they will speak to cleaner and phone me back. They never did. I don't understand how a distnictive red bag with a gift in it can be thrown away. I can't understand how a respectable pub doesn't keep lost items for at least a day in their vicinity. I don't understand why they didn't have the minimal dignity to treat their customers with respect.

I am more than disappointed with the passivity and the nonchallant attitude of the staff. They are incompetent, have nothing to do with the profession, liars and for sure lazy. I will never step a foot in there. It might be a good looking pub compared to the Ealing broadway ones, however, it is of no use. It is the people who make the place and not the sofas and the chairs.

Kev said: I thought all mine were red too (I normally just use some universal remotes) but actually looking at them shows something different....

First the remote controls that get used...
OneForAll Digital 12 (x2) - Red
OneForAll Digital 5 - Red

And for the original manufactures remotes:

Red
Philips Streamium
Goodmans Freeview DVD Recorder
Asda DVD Player
Philips IDTV

Orange
Pioneer ITV Digibox (actually two standby buttons, both orange)
Pioneer AV Amp

Red border or printed symbol
Sharp TV (Symbol Above)
Humax PVR (Red Surround)*
Matsui 14" TV (Red surround)
Kiss Networked DVD Player (Red symbol on)

Green Surround
Sony DAB Tuner

Grey/Silver/Black
Philips DAB Ghetto Blaster
Joytech Control Centre 2 - Grey
Cambridge Audio DAB Tuner - Black
- Interestingly the above three have no colour at all on the remote

Including surrounds and symbols that is
17 Remote Controls
11 - Red - 64%
3 - Grey - 18%
2 - Orange - 12% - Pioneer Trait
1 - Green - 6% - Sony Trait

As for the Humax, some eejit decide to put a red (record) button directly above the red button - I ended up recording programmes more than once when trying to access BBCi - horrid remote mind, forced me to get the universal. - The cursor keys also have a red surround.

My OneForAlls also have three red buttons - Red, Power, Record....

On a great deal of Cross Country trains, since Arriva has began running the service at least, I've found reservations are rarely honoured, and last Sunday was on the other side of your predicament -- having an open return from Edinburgh to Cambridge, sitting at an unreserved table with 2 others and 3 gruff Aberdonians boarding at Newcastle demanding we relinquish our seats on an already over-crowded train. Train guards are inconsistent in their enforcement. Some have asked me to move (I refuse, naturally), some have reseated either of us or refunded my or my fellow travellers' reservations.

The law and morals are, of course, different. Unless of course train staff have decreed all reservations void. (This used to happen a lot to me on Virgin Trains before the Pendelinos were introduced and cancellations were more common.)

Bev said: Really useful article, thank you. I've always wondered what the other big supermarkets were like, but to be honest I've been using Ocado for over 2 years and they have been absolutely brilliant each and every time. I've had the odd substitution, never a big deal, nothing ever missing, fruit and veg in tip top condition, and no short life foods. In two years I've had one late delivery - 9 minutes to be precise, and the very polite driver called us thirty minutes before hand to advise us. Definitely big fans in this house!

Ron N said: I agree with all comments above. A&L are absolutely the worst for internet banking, and yeah i moved because of the interest rate.

When speaking on the phone it's like i'm doing their job for them. Complete idiots.

bill west said: I cant tell you how spectacularly bad these places are, i am sure they employ people to deliberately mispronounce the menu the food was tom tit the service was a load of pony as well. i managed to get my meal written off but the other three paid, they are over priced, with an obvious bias towards doing there bit to prevent global warming, by that i mean they rarely use the oven or any other form of heat to cook(well i say cook more like warmed up under the illegal immigrants armpit ) with, the fries were cold the ribs were cold, the steak and the beef Burgoyne had the same sauce, but a nice touch was the beer was warm, the best thing to do is order the food make an excuse to answer your phone outside and leave, don't worry about the food it will be served to the next poor mug that walks in.
