The Blackberry Thunder is a touch-screen device which could be a big hit for Research in Motion.

The reports suggest the device, which will compete head-on with Apple Inc.’s iPhone, will be a full touchscreen BlackBerry with only four physical keys and no slide out keyboard.

But the most interesting part, according to The Boy Genius Report, is that it will launch as a worldwide lifetime exclusive on Verizon and Vodafone as long as certain minimum sales quotas are met.

So far Research in Motion has not confirmed the Blackberry Thunder.

Although many airline carriers are looking to add wireless services to their lineup of in-flight offerings, it hasn’t been done yet and Joe David Jones of Austin found this out the hard way.

Mr. Jones was arrested at Love Field in Dallas for disorderly conduct after he refused to stop talking on his cell phone while the aircraft was in flight. He said he was using the cell phone because his father was gravely ill and the doctors needed to talk to him concerning his care. He was a passenger on Southwest Airlines.

The use of mobile phones is banned by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) because of concerns that the phone could interfere with the planes navigation system.

The largest mobile phone operator in Africa is in play, and a number of international firms are eyeing the business. African’s use cell phones almost exclusively, and MTN has more customers in the region than anyone else. This makes them attractive for a takeover.

The battle for Africa’s largest cell phone operator, MTN is heating up. First, India’s leading cell phone company, Bharti Airtel, announced it was in early stage discussion with MTN on May 5. Nearly a week later, media reports claimed the world’s largest mobile phone company, Vodafone was planning to enter the fray, potentially offering as much as $39 billion for the African wireless operator.

On May 12, Vodafone, which already owns 50% of South Africa’s leading cell phone player, ruled out such a bid. But a potential new contender has emerged: the United Arab Emirates’ Emirates Telecommunications Corp., Etisalat.

Reuters reports that at a telecoms conference in Cairo Etisalat Chairman Mohammad Omran admitted his company is looking at MTN to expand in Africa.

U.S. and European cell phone markets are both saturated and stagnant, so many companies are expecting growth in emerging markets, like Africa. MTN is a huge prize, and the winner might just be dominant in Africa for years to come.

It’s getting to be worse news every day for land lines. People are used to wireless, and are making most of their phone calls via cell phone. According to a new study released by the government, nearly 3 out of 10 people are basically wireless only.

In fact, wireless only households grew by 2% in the quarter. Even people who own landlines admit they never use them, because of the fear of being hassled by phone solicitors.

Even more amazingly, 2% of households reported having no phones at all. How they completed the survey is anybody’s guess.

The march of cell phones continues unabated.

Nokia’s We Recycle plan is a cost-free way for consumers to recycle their phones.

You can fill out an easy form, listing your address and Nokia will send you a postage paid container to ship the phone to them. Once they receive the phone, they’ll handle the recycling chores.

If you live near one of the Nokia Flagship stores you can alternatively drop in and drop your phone off in person. Either way, you can rest easy knowing your old cell phone will be properly recycled.

In reality, the story here seems to be more of a mistake on an AT&T website, more than an intentional leak.

Whether or not the “iPhone black” is really an option or not remains to be seen.

We take a look at unlocked GSM Cell Phones. The first thing you need to understand is what a GSM phone is. A GSM cell phone logs into a GSM network and requires a SIM card. The main advantage to an unlocked GSM cell phone is that is should be portable while you’re traveling in foreign countries, provided that country has a GSM network.

GSM cell phones run on SIM cards. It essence, this means you can remove one SIM, replace it with another, and your phone will still work. An unlocked GSM cell phone offers a certain degree of freedom because of this ability.

So, the SIM (subscriber information module) works both way:

1) Your SIM, plugged into a different phone identifies you as the subscriber of that phone
2) Your phone, with another SIM plugged in, will be identified as a subscribed to another GSM network

Most international networks are GSM, so an unlocked GSM cell phone with the proper SIM card should work when you travel. Hopefully this article clarifies some of the advantages of unlocked GSM cell phones.

Samsung has moved ahead of Motorola to take third place in the burgeoning Indian cell phone market. Nokia is way out ahead in first, Sony Ericsson is in a distant second place, and now Samsung has moved to the bronze position.

Latest ORG data reveal that Samsung is the only prominent player to have increased its market share in the Indian market in the January-March period. It has gained market share from 5.7% in January to 7% in March. In the same period, Motorola India lost market share from 6.7% to 5.9%, but Sony Ericsson remained at the same level of 8.1%.

Even Finnish handset biggie Nokia lost market share in India from 72.3% to 69.5% between January and March. Nokia India managing director (mobile phones) D Shivakumar refused to comment on the issue. “As a policy, we do not comment on market share.” When contacted, Samsung Telecommunications India country head Sunil Dutt said: “In January-March, we registered a good growth in our mobile phone business based on our channel expansion programme, new product launches like the Guru 100, SGH-G800, Samsung i450 to name a few, as well as our brand activity involving Aamir Khan.” Samsung plans to double its Indian market share by end-2008 from the present level.

Nokia has been slipping in market share globally, and aims to fix the issue by introducing a slew of new handsets. Motorola has been battling eroding market share for years.
