Last year we made a no sew witch costume.

Butterfly Costume Supplies

a black long sleeve shirt

black leggings

thin white muslin fabric (about a yard)

Elmer’s Painters

black extra wide Sharpie

2 large pom poms

2 black chenille pipe cleaners

1 headband

glue gun and glue sticks

glow in the dark fabric paint (optional)

Place arm of shirt up at an angle. Take fabric and cut a wing shape. Cut fabric to match angle of sleeve and side of shirt.

Copy this shape so there are two symmetrical wing shapes.

To make coloring the fabric easier, iron the fabric wing to the shiny side of freezer paper. The freezer paper will stabilize the fabric and can be easily peeled away when finished.

Draw a design on the wing with a Sharpie marker. Repeat for other wing making sure design is symmetrical. Holding the fabric up to a window will make it easy to trace.

Color away! If you want your butterfly to glow in the dark outline with glow in the dark fabric paint.

Hot glue wings to back edge of arms and sides of shirt.

Twist pipe cleaners to the headband and hot glue to secure. Hot glue a pom pom to each end of pipe cleaner.

I have no clue!) but what is really appealing about this letter sounds activity is that it uses familiar foods to work on literacy skills. Why is that awesome? Well, as children learn something new we want to reinforce it and in my experience when it’s reinforced naturally it packs a bigger punch than if we do this one activity over and over. Kids see these foods whether they are eating them or not pretty often and if your child is anything like mine they will recall this lesson and let you know that bananas are spelled with a lowercase b! I never told her a thing about spelling… but that’s the beauty of doing short but meaningful activities, they add up and your child adds them all up and constructs new meaning!

Gather your materials. You will need some food erasers ( We got ours at Party City) and some sentence strips ( ours are sticky back which is wonderful for changing up the letters in a class), a marker, and a tray.

Write out the letters that correspond to the sounds. We are doing beginning sounds because that is where my daughter is at. We have talked about other sounds but are sticking close to the beginning ones for now, no rush! Write them out as lowercase letters remember that children will be reading lowercase letters much more often than uppercase.

Stick the strips on a tray or cookie sheet! Oh I forgot to mention a cute little holder for the erasers ( you can’t see them on the table, but I had to dump out a bunch of gems to use this one). Add the erasers and invite your kiddo.

Dump them ( but just reaching in and taking them out one by one is great too) and start matching them up. Having a limited amount of items helps kids to feel successful. If your child is struggling say the words with them, you can slow it down but make sure the sound isn’t too distorted. Encourage them to say the words as well, it helps to hear themselves. They are still learning but it’s a small dose, this is something parents like me with kids in kindergarten can do for a few minutes on thr weekend.

Kids love to be able to touch and relate to what they are learning and while a fully realistic experience is even better, a little hands-on manipulative time for literacy is great too!

All done! Next you can use these little erasers for counters or in a rhyming basket. What woud you use them for?

On being ambidextrous

I have always been pretty ambidextrous and there are some things that I favour my left hand with, like playing hockey, archery, pouring drinks! I don't really think about it, it just seems more natural with some things.

I don't wear a watch these days but when I did I wear it on my right wrist and strangely enough, Ebi-kun does the same.

So, a little story, when I was 16 I left school and went to the local art college for a year, wasn't the best year. Firstly I had applied to do art and tech drawing but when I rocked up, the tech course was mysteriously full - we learned later they had let three lads onto the course under late enrollment. That is a rant for another day.

A few weeks into term, our dog managed to knock me down the stairs, I hit my elbow pretty badly and couldn't straighten my arm properly for about 3 weeks, I rocked up to college with my right arm in a sling!

The lecturers wanted to know why I had bothered turning up, I said, I'd use my left hand, which I did. I favour my right for writing and drawing but forcing me to use my left was great. Strangely though, my style is completely different with my left hand, one of my lectures actually said that I should use my left all the time! The cheek!

Later in the year I broke my leg skiing! Nasty break and missed a lot of college, I did take my mock exams and was allowed to take my A Level a year early, it was surprising they let me because I didn't have that much work in my portfolio due to missing so much college and only being there for a year anyway, and I had missed a lot of classes. Turned out to be a good call on their part as I rocked a B!

Anyway, Ebi-kun has been going through a similar experience with his fractured arm. Sensei hasn't been very sympathetic and still makes him do his tests! Maths he is doing OK at, he had a set of questions the other day and still finished 4th, doing it with his left hand. Kanji on the other hand he is struggling with because there are so many strokes and it's difficult for him to write them accurately with his left. We see the doctor again today, if still hurts so I'm not sure what will happen.

It's sports festival on Saturday so Ebi-kun really wants it fixed by then!

sweet william

That beautiful bunch of flowers, which includes waratah, freesias and sweet william, was a gift from my dear friend Jenny who has been visiting for a few days. Lucky us! Much lego, coffee drinking and craft discussion took place. And my sister T and her family have been staying, too. Beautiful kid-chaos and happiness. Quilts, pillows and toys everywhere. Popcorn under the couch.
The stack of fabrics in blue, pink and grey is sitting on my worktable, ready to be, well, worked. I'm hoping to cut into them tomorrow. But in the meantime, they are very gorgeous altogether like that, don't you think? They'll become embroidered project bags for Loop.
Our local city council has set up a live-streaming camera inside a kākā nest: if you have kids, they might enjoy checking in on the mother and her chicks.
Here is a song I find myself listening to often these days: Blur's My Terracotta Heart.

Si utilizza fredda per accompagnare le polpettine tiepide di ceci, lievemente piccanti, ma anche nelle insalate miste e di pomodori.

Quando imparerò a ANCHE fare i felafel, sarò ancor più soddisfatta.

I've been quiet but busy. My beloved and wonderful mom turned 80! I love her so much. What a lucky kid I am. We had a wonderful girls-only family celebration at the beach and it was a nice getaway from the computer and security problems I've been having lately.

Mean people infected my computer with malware and so I've been dealing with huge waves of malicious emails being sent from my personal email address to everyone I've ever emailed in my whole life and also their dogs. My apologies if you've received any of those. I don't send out patterns or updates via email so please don't click on any of those links that say 'Hey, friend! Go here," or similar. I know y'all are smarter than that, but thought I'd tell you anyway. Apparently after the initial wave they can still send emails that appear to be from me without actually being from me, which is called spoofing. Just trash them.

I've been working with my email provider and I've had to completely wipe my Mac and start from scratch to make sure the boogeymen are gone. It's left me with major trust issues so I can hardly bring myself to get on the internet anymore. And also now after the rebuild of my computer I've been introduced to the nightmare that is the Mac Photos app and I hate hate hate it. Whoever decided it would make a swell replacement for iPhotos needs to be put in the naughty corner with a cone hat. Downloading and formatting those two images up there ^ would have taken about 5 minutes max in iPhotos. It took me about 30 minutes in Photos and there were plenty of creative epithets being hurled around during that time. I hear there's a new one being released today so I hope they've listened to the myriad complaints. Oh, iPhoto, I miss youuuuuuuuu.

Anyhoo. Done with the negative stuff. Cute birds! Let's talk about cute, stuffed birdies. What you see is a tight prototype of the upcoming pattern. There were some minor tweaks made since the original one for my daughter (some I like, some I don't). So a few more little tweaks to come. But it's close.

It's almost October! That's so crazy! Where did you go, September? It seems like time speeds up after August every year. Slow down, fall, I want to savor you. I need pumpkins on my porch! Must go buy pumpkins and mums.
