A long day at work is usually at the top of the list of those excuses, but here at Planet Health, we want to give you some tips that will help motivate yourself to attend the gym just like you planned.</p>

<h3>Eat the Right Food All Day Long</h3>
<p>Start the morning with a smart breakfast. You will want to eat a little protein, a piece of fruit or a vegetable, and make sure to have some complex carbs like a piece of whole grain toast. This hearty breakfast will set the day for success. Then, at lunchtime keep it on the lighter side so you don’t crash mid-afternoon. Opt for a lunch that is very similar to what you ate for breakfast: protein, veggie, complex carbohydrate. A nice wrap or a generous salad should do the trick. Finally, make sure you have a pre-workout snack handy. You will want to eat something packed with carbs, but low in protein about 45 minutes before you head to the gym. Planning your meals for the day will lead to success when it comes to actually making it to the gym after work.</p>

<h3>Have Workout Gear at the Office, and Change Before You Leave for the Day</h3>
<p>If you leave the office ready to hit the gym, you will be more likely to actually stop by on your way home. It does a couple things for your brain. One, it puts you in workout mode just by having the visual cue of your gym attire on, which will make it more likely that you will stop at the gym instead of just going straight home. Also, if your coworkers see you in your gym attire, you will be less likely to blow off your workout because then you would have to admit to everyone that you skipped the gym!</p>

<h3>Get Yourself a Workout Buddy</h3>
<p>The best way to motivate yourself to attend the gym is with the help of another person. People can always find a way to excuse themselves from working out, but they tend to find it much harder to flake out on a friend. Instead of having an after-work cocktail hour, organize an after-hours workout session, and let your friends and coworkers help you achieve your fitness goals.</p>

<h3>Don’t Expect Too Much</h3>
<p>Face it, some days are just tough, and working out will be a hard sell to your stressed and tired brain. However, sometimes if you just promise yourself a little bit of a workout like a 15-minute jaunt on the treadmill, your mind will be more amenable to the situation, making it easier to follow through. Give yourself a break on those extra tough days, and don’t expect a full hard-hitting workout.</p>

<p>The sooner you can embed a trip to the gym as part of your daily routine, the easier it will be to actually go. Other people prefer to wait until the afternoon or evening to get their blood pumping at the gym. Then there are many people who are somewhere in between <span id="more-10160"></span>these two extremes. It begs the question of whether there is a best time to exercise. And if there is, what time is it?</span></p>
<h4>Who Morning Exercise Works Best For<b> </b></h4>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Are you the sort of person who has trouble sticking with your gym routine? If so, it may be best to do your exercising early in the day. There has been research done showing that where consistency is concerned, morning exercise works best. However, those who choose this option should take more time to warm up than you would later in the day.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On top of that, if you experience <a href="https://www2.hse.ie/conditions/mental-health/insomnia.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">insomnia</a>, getting to the gym instead of hitting the alarm and snoozing may be the better option. The reason for this is because exercising or eating late in the day can make it harder for your body to relax and unwind so you can sleep.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Everyone is different, and just because some people are more consistent exercising in the morning, that doesn’t mean it will apply to you. <h4><span style="font-weight: 400;">Work Out in an Efficient Way</span></h4>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Choose a workout you can do anywhere and at any time if you want to get that exercise in. You may feel like there’s nothing you can handle beyond lying in bed with Netflix on. There are all sorts of solutions touted as a cure for depression, but they don’t always work for everyone. <span id="more-10152"></span>One thing that does might be surprising – getting in a few minutes of exercise. Some exercises work better than others, so we want to share them with you.</span></p>
<h4>Aerobic Exercise</h4>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Cardio and aerobic exercise are among the best when it comes to fighting depression. Experts recommend spending about 20 to 30 minutes engaging in this kind of exercise a few times a week to get the results you want. These exercises can cause the body to release <a href="https://www.webmd.com/depression/guide/exercise-depression#1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">endorphins</a> which make people feel good. It can produce a sense of joy or well-being and even increase physical pain levels.</span></p>
<h4>Strength Training</h4>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Just like cardio, strength training may also help with feelings of depression. One study shows that a 10-week strength training program helped ease depression systems in stroke survivors with depression. This kind of workout is about control and mastery. The truth is that you will want to take some time to rest and recover, <span id="more-10147"></span>but you don’t have to stop exercising during the entire recovery process. The exercises you can do will depend on what part of your body is injured.<br />

<h4>Foot and Ankle Injuries</h4>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are plenty of exercise options with a foot injury such as using the rowing machine, spending time in the swimming pool, or using a stationary bike with one leg. Your physician can recommend cardio exercises that you can still do to keep your body in good shape while you heal from the injury. This can be challenging since there are more than 300 poses, but once you know a few simple ones, you can move on <span id="more-10143"></span>to more complicated poses. The beginners yoga poses below are the best place to start.</span></p>
<h4>Mountain Pose</h4>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The mountain pose has you stand up with your feet together and shoulders relaxed. You should have your arms at your side with even weight distribution on your soles. First, take a deep breath as you stretch your arms over your head while your palms face each other. Reach as high as you can with your fingertips.</span></p>
<h4>Downward Dog</h4>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The downward dog starts with you on all fours. Your hands should be under your shoulders, and your knees should be under your hips. Walk your hands forward a few inches with your fingers spread wide and your palms pressed on the mat. Next, curl your toes under and press your hips toward the ceiling to create a V-shape with your body. Press your shoulders away from your ears with your knees slightly bent and your feet hip-width apart.</span></p>
<h4>Warrior II</h4>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When doing <a href="https://www.rte.ie/lifestyle/living/2016/0718/803142-yoga-pose-of-the-month/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">this pose</a>, start standing with your legs about three feet apart while turning your right foot out 90 degrees and your left foot slightly in. Move your hands to your hips while relaxing your shoulders and then extend your arms out to the sides with the palms down. Next, bend the right knee 90 degrees while keeping your knee over your ankle. Hold for one minute before switching sides.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">These three poses will give you a great start to enjoying yoga. You can build off of them to learn more complicated poses. If you’re interested in yoga, this is the best option for starting out.</span></p>
