Judo Canada is proud to recognize Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard, Olympian and Olympic medallist, who has made history by becoming the youngest female Rokudan in Canadian judo history.

This important promotion to 6th dan black belt marks another remarkable milestone in Catherine’s already exceptional journey. Known for her determination, discipline, technical excellence and commitment to Canadian judo, Catherine has inspired generations of judokas through her performances on the national and international stage.

An Olympic medallist and one of Canada’s most accomplished judokas, Catherine now joins a very select group of women who have reached one of the highest ranks in Canadian judo history. Since 1956, only a small number of female judokas in Canada have achieved the rank of Rokudan or Shichidan, including pioneers and leaders such as Gisèle Gravel, June Takahashi, Tina Takahashi, Monette LeBlanc, Danielle Ferland, Nathalie Gosselin and many others who have helped shape the history of our sport.

By joining this distinguished group, Catherine not only adds her name to an elite list of Canadian judo leaders, but also continues to open doors for the next generation of female judokas. Her achievement reflects years of dedication, perseverance and excellence, both as an athlete and as a role model within the Canadian judo community.

This recognition is especially meaningful because it celebrates not only Catherine’s competitive success, but also her contribution to the growth, visibility and legacy of judo in Canada. Her journey from the tatami to the Olympic podium, and now to this historic promotion, represents the values at the heart of judo: respect, courage, humility, effort and continuous improvement.

Judo Canada congratulates Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard on this historic achievement and proudly celebrates her place among the highest-ranked women in Canadian judo history. Her legacy continues to inspire athletes across the country and confirms her important role in the ongoing development of judo in Canada.

Judo Canada is proud to welcome Steelhaus as a new partner and the official presenter of the 2026 Awards and Recognition Gala, held in Calgary on May 17 as part of the Open National Championships.

The annual gala is an important moment for the Canadian judo community. It brings together athletes, coaches, clubs, officials, volunteers, families, and partners to celebrate the people who contribute to the growth and success of judo across the country. This year’s edition honoured seventeen athletes, clubs, and volunteers for their achievements, commitment, and positive impact on the sport.

Based in Alberta, Steelhaus is a Canadian company recognized for its innovation, engineering expertise, and commitment to performance. The company describes itself as a vertically integrated completions company, engineering solutions from design to deployment, with more than 15 years of product development experience.

For Judo Canada, welcoming Steelhaus as the presenting partner of the Awards and Recognition Gala was especially meaningful in Calgary, a city with a strong connection to both Canadian sport and the energy sector.

“We are very pleased to welcome Steelhaus as a new partner of Judo Canada and as the official presenter of our Awards and Recognition Gala,” said Nicolas Gill, CEO of Judo Canada. “This evening is about recognizing excellence, dedication, leadership, and the many people who help build our sport from the grassroots level to the international stage. Having Steelhaus associated with this celebration adds great value and meaning to the event.”

The partnership reflects shared values between Steelhaus and the judo community, including discipline, perseverance, teamwork, innovation, and commitment to excellence. Through its involvement, Steelhaus helped elevate an evening dedicated to recognizing those who make a lasting difference in Canadian judo.

The 2026 Awards and Recognition Gala took place during a successful week of judo in Calgary, where the Open National Championships brought together the Canadian judo community for one of the most important events on the national calendar. Judo Canada’s annual gala recognized athletes, clubs, and volunteers who continue to inspire the next generation and strengthen the sport across the country.

Judo Canada sincerely thanks Steelhaus for its support and for choosing to become involved in this important celebration of Canadian judo. The organization looks forward to building this new relationship and exploring opportunities to grow the partnership in the years ahead.

Welcome to the Judo Canada family, Steelhaus.

After winning five gold medals yesterday in the cadet division, the Canadian team followed up with another strong performance on Sunday at the Junior Pan-American Cup in Lima, Peru. Anes Mati, Amir Temirbaev, Matthew Molchanov, and Franck David Moussima Ewane Elouti all ended the day at the top of the podium in their respective weight divisions.

Gabrieli Makhatadze was also a contender for gold, but he bowed out to his countrymate Temirbaev in the big final and will return home with a silver medal.

Before facing Makhatadze in the finals, Temirbaev dispatched of Americans Johan Badillo and Sebastian Teran. Meanwhile, Makhatadze bested Jack Uraco of Peru, Taiga Hatanaka of Argentina, and Derian Luna of Ecuador to advance to his second gold medal final of the weekend.

“Gabrieli competed in a higher weight class than his own today, and yet he still managed to advance all the way to the finals after a big semi-final bout. His fight against Amir was very close, and in the end, Amir’s experience is probably what made the difference,” said Canadian team coach Erika Miranda.

In the under-66 kg category, Anes Mati quickly ousted his first two opponents before defeating Mexico’s Efrain Carrillo Paredes in the gold medal bout, securing the victory as the four minutes of regulation time wound down.

At the very end of the afternoon, Matthew Molchanov (-100 kg) and Franck David Moussima Ewane Elouti (+100 kg) brought the day to a spectacular close for the Canadian team, respectively disposing of Chile’s Kenji Escrich and Argentina’s Edgar Molina to clinch their second titles in as many days.

“The level of competition on Sunday was much higher than it was on Saturday, and all of our athletes fought extremely hard all day long. They’re very talented, and I see tremendous potential in them, which is encouraging as we start to look ahead to the World Championships,” added Miranda.

Laurence Gagnon battles for bronze

Laurence Gagnon got off to a strong start on Sunday in the under-57 kg division at the Junior European Cup in Graz, Austria. The athlete from Saguenay won her first three bouts of the day, later advancing to one of the bronze medal finals.

After receiving a first-round bye, Gagnon defeated Israel’s Noa Hadar in her first fight of the day. She then dispatched of Kazakhstan’s Kira Khegay and Romania’s Vanessa Tolea in quick succession to secure her spot in the semi-finals.

However, she lost her semi-final match to Austria’s Marlene Schinwald, then bowed out to Italy’s Alice Martellaci in the battle for bronze. Gagnon thus ended the day in fifth place.

“[Laurence] pulled off some very convincing victories today. However, she may have been feeling a bit stressed in the semi-finals and the bronze medal match, as she was slightly less composed than she had been in her earlier bouts. The bronze medal final was a close fight, but she made a small error that opened the door for her opponent to score. All in all, though, she did great, and she had a very good day,” explained Canadian coach Antoine Bouchard.

In the under-52 kg division, Helena Martins De Oliveira, Melody Grenier and Rima Bourihane were limited to one bout each on Sunday.

On the men’s side, Artem Neyolov also got his day off to a strong start in the under-81 kg weight class. After winning three straight matches, he was defeated in the quarter-finals by France’s Noah Boue Kossa, who went on to capture the category’s gold medal.

In the repechage, Neyolov bested Alex Faustin Ntipadem Nouni of Italy, before falling to Veljko Varnicic of Serbia, who went on to win bronze. The Ontarian thus finished seventh in the under-81 kg group.

“Although Artem finished seventh, he had some big wins today, especially against the Italian in the repechage, where he dominated the match. His two losses were against medal winners, who were both high-calibre opponents. It’s not the result he was hoping for, but it was a very positive day,” concluded Bouchard.

Canadian judokas swept the podium Saturday at the Lima Cadet Panamerican Cup (Peru). All five Canadians reached the finals, and better still, all five won gold medals in their respective weight classes.

Amir Temirbaev (-60 kg) and Anes Mati (-66 kg) both faced and surpassed three opponents, and then went on to claim the top spot on the podium. Temirbaev’s wins were decisive in his first two bouts: in under 90 seconds he was victorious. He capped off his day by defeating Mexico’s Arath Cruzalta Apodaca in the final.

Mati had a similar day to his teammate, defeating Peru’s André Zegarra Gruichard and Mexico’s Efrain Carrillo Paredes before the end of regulation time, and then moving on to face Peru’s Yesus Perea Vallve in the final.

In the Under 55 kg division, Gabrieli Makhatadze received a bye in the quarterfinals before defeating Chile’s Guillermo Carrizo and the U.S.A.’s Sebastian Terain; these wins put yet another Canadian on top of the podium.

Then it was time for Matthew Molchanov (-90 kg) and Franck David Moussima Ewane Elouti (+90 kg) to take their turn on the tatami. Both won their first matches in the round-robin stage of their respective weight classes, and went on to win their finals. Molchanov defeated Chile’s Kenji Escrich, while Moussima Ewane Elouti defeated Andres De La Hoz (Chile), in the final battle.

Canadian coach Erika Miranda was very pleased with Team Canada’s performance, having expected nothing less than podium finishes on Saturday.

“Given the calibre of the competition here today, to me, this has almost been a training session for our athletes. It also remains an important step towards the World Championships. They dominated every one of their matches, and I’m pleased with the results,” she commented.

The five aforementioned judokas will be back on the tatami in Lima on Sunday, where they will compete in the Lima Junior Panamerican Cup. Stay tuned for more exciting judo action!

Carla Van Zyl demonstrates her grit

Carla Van Zyl showed exactly what she was made of Saturday at the Graz Junior European Cup in Austria. In the Under 63 kg division, Van Zyl suffered a loss in her second bout in the main bracket before moving on to the repechage. The latter was where Van Zyl truly proved her mettle, winning three straight matches to reach the bronze medal round.

However, the British Columbian’s struggles weren’t quite over yet: the Canadian had to face Brazil’s Manuela Maia, who had defeated her in the final of the Pan American Junior Championships less than a month ago.

The heated bout needed overtime in order to be settled, and ultimately, it was Van Zyl who emerged victorious thanks to a yuko.

Coach Antoine Bouchard noted that “She bounced back so well. Despite her loss earlier in the day, she did end up finding her rhythm and looked so comfortable during the repechage bouts. She stayed focused, took it one step at a time, one match at a time, and that’s what enabled her to make it to the podium.”

In the Under 73 kg division, Lowan Le Bris also fought several bouts in the repechage. After his loss to France’s Kassim Brosseau, the British Columbian defeated Azerbaijan’s Salim Sultanov, Georgia’s Luka Chkareuli, and Ukraine’s Roman Bankin before finally falling to Giorgi Givishvili (Georgia). The Canadian finished the day with a record of three wins and two losses.

“Honestly, Lowan deserved a little better; he was leading the bout against the French judoka, but a tiny mistake ultimately cost him the match. He did bounce back though, and went on to secure three wins in the repechage, which is quite exceptional,” added Bouchard.

Two Canadian women were in action on the tatami in the Under 70 kg division: Missy Jen Dorval Mbele won two of her four bouts, while Charlie Thibault won her first match against Dutch judoka Luca Jongstra, before losing in the next round to German Alica Thiele.

Denis Neyolov (-66 kg), also representing Canada, was halted after a single bout on Saturday in Graz.

Judo Canada has officially inform all Provincial and Territorial Judo Associations that, effective July 1, 2026, Judo Canada will transition its membership management database from Trackie to Dokume. In addition, the current Shiai tournament management system will progressively be replaced by Dokume’s integrated tournament management software.

This transition represents an important modernization initiative aimed at improving the management experience for Provincial Associations, clubs, members, coaches, officials, and event organizers across Canada.

The transition process will occur in several phases:

Creation of Provincial Accounts
The first step will consist of establishing each Provincial and Territorial Association account within the Dokume platform.

Creation of Club Pages
Once Provincial accounts are completed, individual club pages will be created and validated.

Importation of Membership Data
Following the setup of Provincial and club structures, existing member information will be imported into the new system.

To support this transition and answer questions, Judo Canada will organize a national Zoom information session for the PTSO’s only on June 2026.

We thank in advance all Provincial and Territorial Judo Associations for their collaboration and patience throughout this important modernization process.

We are confident that this transition will provide significant long-term benefits to the entire Canadian judo community.

Judo Canada would like to extend its sincere thanks to Tourism Calgary for its outstanding support and partnership in the successful hosting of the 2026 Open National Championships at the University of Calgary Olympic Oval.

From May 14 to 17, Calgary welcomed the Canadian judo community for one of the most important events on Judo Canada’s national calendar. More than 1,100 judokas from across the country gathered in Calgary to compete for national titles, with the event bringing a record number of athletes to the city and showcasing the strength, diversity, and energy of judo in Canada.

The Championships also received valuable media attention, including coverage from CTV News Calgary, which highlighted the national judo competition taking over the Olympic Oval. The Olympic Oval itself described the event as a strong example of sport tourism and the type of major event energy Calgary is able to generate.

Tourism Calgary played an important role in helping make this event a success. Its collaboration, local expertise, and commitment to sport tourism contributed directly to the experience of athletes, coaches, officials, families, volunteers, and spectators who came together in Calgary for this national celebration of judo.

“Tourism Calgary has been an exceptional partner for Judo Canada. Their support and expertise helped us deliver a high-quality national event in a city that understands the value of sport and major events. Calgary provided an outstanding environment for our athletes, coaches, families, and the entire Canadian judo community,” said Nicolas Gill, CEO of Judo Canada.

Judo Canada is especially pleased to confirm that the Open National Championships will return to Calgary in 2027. This continued collaboration reflects the strong relationship built with Tourism Calgary and the confidence Judo Canada has in Calgary as a premier host city for national sport events.

The 2026 edition demonstrated once again Calgary’s ability to welcome major competitions, create meaningful sport tourism impact, and provide a memorable experience for participants from across Canada. Judo Canada looks forward to continuing this important partnership with Tourism Calgary and building toward an even stronger return in 2028.

On behalf of the athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, families, and clubs who took part in the 2026 Open National Championships, thank you, Tourism Calgary, for your trust, your support, and your continued commitment to the growth of judo in Canada.

Judo Canada is proud to recognize the renewal of its partnership with Sherwood Ford, a long-standing partner that has contributed to the development of Canadian judo for more than eight years.

Associated with the Giant Sherwood Ford Canadian Circuit, this partnership supports athlete participation in national events while recognizing the performances of judokas who distinguish themselves throughout the season. Since its inception, this collaboration has helped strengthen the Canadian circuit and provide greater visibility to the athletes, clubs, and events that help judo shine across the country.

“We are very pleased to continue this relationship with Sherwood Ford and Mark Hicks. Their commitment to Canadian judo is sincere, consistent, and meaningful. Over the years, this partnership has become an important part of the development of our national circuit and the recognition of our athletes,” said Nicolas Gill, CEO of Judo Canada.

The renewal of this agreement confirms the shared desire of Judo Canada and Sherwood Ford to continue growing the circuit, encouraging participation in national competitions, and supporting judokas in their development.

Following the 2026 Open Nationals, held in Calgary last weekend, the Giant Sherwood Ford Canadian Circuit rankings have also been updated. This latest update reflects the results achieved at one of the most important events on the national calendar and further shapes the race at the top of the cumulative standings.

“For us, it is important to give back to the judo community and support athletes who dedicate so much effort to their development. Judo promotes values that resonate deeply with us, such as discipline, respect, perseverance, and commitment. We are proud to continue our involvement with Judo Canada,” said Mark Hicks, President of Sherwood Ford.

Through this renewed partnership, Judo Canada will continue to highlight the performances of athletes on the Giant Sherwood Ford Canadian Circuit and recognize those who stand out through their consistency, commitment, and results throughout the season.

Judo Canada sincerely thanks Sherwood Ford for its renewed trust and lasting contribution to the development of judo in Canada. After more than eight years of collaboration, this partnership remains a concrete example of the positive impact an engaged partner can have on the growth of a sport and on the journey of its athletes.

Judo Canada is proud to announce the renewal of its partnership with Premium Group, reaffirming a shared commitment to supporting the development of young judokas as they transition from the junior to senior level.

The renewed agreement, confirmed during the 2026 Open Nationals in Calgary, reflects the strength of the relationship between Judo Canada and Premium Group, as well as a mutual desire to continue growing the partnership and expanding its impact in the years ahead.

“We are extremely pleased to continue our partnership with Premium Group and its owner, Denis Collin. Denis has been deeply involved in the judo community for many years, and his continued support represents much more than a financial contribution. It is a meaningful investment in the future of our athletes and in the development of judo across Canada,” said Nicolas Gill, CEO of Judo Canada.

Through this renewed commitment, Premium Group will continue to provide financial support dedicated to young athletes making the important transition to the senior level. These funds will go directly to the athletes, helping reduce barriers and providing meaningful support at a critical stage in their development.

Founded in 2015 by Collin, Premium Group is based in Eastern Canada, more specifically in Moncton. The company is active in various construction sectors and continues to grow thanks to the work and dedication of its team.

For Collin, the connection between Premium Group and judo is deeply personal. A former national-level judoka, he has remained actively involved in the sport and currently co-owns two clubs in New Brunswick, where nearly 250 members train each week.

“Judo has had a major impact on my life, both personally and professionally. Our company slogan, ‘Built with Heart,’ was inspired in many ways by the values I learned through judo — perseverance, tenacity, respect, and commitment,” said Collin.

Having benefited from the sport throughout his own journey, Collin remains motivated by the opportunity to give back and help young athletes across the country pursue their full potential.

“I have always wanted to contribute to judo beyond my own province. Supporting athletes at this stage of their development is something that matters deeply to me. Many judokas need additional support as they move from the junior to senior ranks, and we want to help give them the best possible chance to succeed,” he added.

Judo Canada is especially proud to continue building this relationship with Premium Group and looks forward to further developing the partnership, increasing its visibility, and strengthening its impact within the Canadian judo community.

OTTAWA – (May 21, 2026) – Commonwealth Sport Canada (CSC) and Judo Canada are proud to announce the athletes who will represent Team Canada in judo at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, taking place July 23 to August 2, 2026.

The Canadian team features a strong blend of experienced veterans and emerging international talent, including two returning Commonwealth Games athletes in Kyle Reyes and Coralie Godbout. Reyes captured a silver medal at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, while Godbout returns after a fifth-place finish in her Commonwealth Games debut.

“Judo has a proud history of success for Team Canada at the Commonwealth Games, and this group reflects both the depth of experience and the exciting future of the sport in our country,” said Kelly Laframboise, Director, Team Canada 2026. “From seasoned leaders like Kyle Reyes and Coralie Godbout to athletes preparing for their first major Games experience, this team embodies resilience, ambition, and the spirit of representing Canada on the international stage. We look forward to watching them compete with pride in Glasgow.”

Team Highlights:

The women’s team is led by Coralie Godbout (-78 kg), who continues to rise on the international stage following a career-best fifth-place finish at an IJF Grand Slam event in Kazakhstan. Godbout has also earned two bronze medals on the IJF World Tour and enters Glasgow ranked No. 15 in the world in her category.

“I am very happy to have the opportunity to compete in the Commonwealth Games for a second time,” said Coralie Godbout. “My participation in the last edition taught me a lot, and I am coming back with even more experience and confidence. After finishing so close to the podium last time, I am motivated to improve on that performance and achieve an even better result.”

Laurence Biron (-63 kg), Charlie Thibault (-70 kg), Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg) and Heidi Quach (-48 kg) will each make their Commonwealth Games debut as part of a young and talented Canadian squad.

The men’s team is headlined by veteran Kyle Reyes (-100 kg), who brings extensive international experience, including representing Canada at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, winning silver at the 2022 World Championships, and capturing a Junior World title in 2013.

Reyes returns to competition following back surgery and will use the Games as part of his journey toward qualifying for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA.

Justin Lemire (-73 kg), currently ranked No. 19 in the world, will compete at his first Commonwealth Games after establishing himself as one of Canada’s top international judokas.

“I am really happy and proud to have the opportunity to compete in my first Commonwealth Games,” said Justin Lemire. “It is a unique experience and an important milestone in my career. Major Games are always something special, and I am really looking forward to sharing this experience with the team.”

The men’s team also includes Julien Frascadore (-66 kg), Guillaume Gaulin (-90 kg), and John Messe A Bessong (+100 kg).

“The Commonwealth Games are a unique opportunity to represent Canada on the international scene for a major Games,” said coach Antoine Bouchard. “For some members of our team, it will be a first experience of this kind. Despite this, we have a very experienced team, and we believe in their potential to win a lot of medals.”
