According to one of the website in India, Dell has confirmed that some of its PowerEdge server motherboards have been shipped to customers with embedded spyware.

According to Dell, the damage is limited to replacement motherboards for four Dell server products – PowerEdge R310, PowerEdge R410, PowerEdge R510 and PowerEdge T410. However, the exact malware type, and how it managed its way onto the motherboards is still not clear.

“As part of Dell’s quality process, we have identified a potential issue with our service mother board stock, like the one you received for your PowerEdge R410, and are taking preventative action with our customers accordingly. The potential issue involves a small number of PowerEdge server motherboards sent out through service dispatches that may contain malware. This malware code has been detected on the embedded server management firmware as you indicated.”

“We take matters of information security very seriously and believe that any impact to a customer’s information security is unlikely. To date we have received no customer reports related to data security. Systems running non-Windows operating systems are not vulnerable to this malware and this issue is not present on motherboards shipped new with PowerEdge systems.”

“We have assembled a customer list and are directly contacting customers like you through a call campaign. On the call, you should be provided a phone number to call if you have additional questions.”

Martin said: First impressions using a Dell Streak are very positive. As I use Mac, this is the first Dell product I ever use. At 5 inches it’s big but still fits in your pocket. Dell has adapted Android to the larger dimensions and the whole experience is more comfortable. Forget about the m in your URL, you can browse normally. The 5 MP camera is great for videos an pictures, it comes with edit software. On the negative it uses an unusual charging cable and the power button is too close to the camera button. Will be even better with Froyo. It is the biggest smartphone but it is thin and light, much smaller than an iPad.

Have you try Google Chrome 5 Beta? Google Chrome 5.0.375.29 has been released to the Beta channel on Linux, Mac, and Windows. Yes, I’m currently running Google Chrome 5.0.375.29 beta on my Windows 7 desktop.

Ten things you should try after installing Chrome 5 beta:

1. Google Chrome remembers zoom settings for each domain. Go to http://www.malaysiakini.com, zoom using Ctrl+ or Ctrl-, close the tab and reopen it. You will get the same zoom setting as previously.

2. Remove individual items from the history. Go to the History tab (Ctrl+H), click on “Edit items”, select the pages you want to remove and click on “Remove selected pages”. For me, I would prefer delete all history instead of individual item from the history.

3. The new bookmark manager is an HTML page that opens in a new tab. It looks better than the previous manager and it has the advantage that extensions will be able to add new features.

4. Synchronize themes and preferences, in addition to bookmarks.

5. Google Chrome includes Adobe’s Flash plug-in. Open a site that uses Flash, right-click on a Flash object and select “About Adobe Flash”. You should be able to see the message “You have version 10,1,53,22 installed”.

6. You can disable individual plug-ins. Go to chrome://plugins/ and disable the plug-ins you don’t need.

7. Extensions in incognito mode. Chrome disables all extensions in incognito mode, but you can manually enable some of them from the Extensions page.

8. Native geolocation. The previous Chrome versions used the Google Gears implementation, but Google Chrome now supports HTML5 geolocation, so that more web applications can easily find your location. Go to Google Maps, click on the small circle above the Street View logo and you’ll see an infobar: “maps.google.com wants to track your location”.

9. Manual translation. Now you can disable the auto-translation feature and still be able to use the built-in translator. Even if you disable the Google Translate integration from Settings/Under the hood, you can still right-click on a page and select “Translate to English”.

10. Reorder extension buttons. You can change the order of the buttons installed by Google Chrome extensions using drag & drop and even hide some of the buttons.
