In a statement here on Thursday, Intel said Prakash would be responsible for the growth of its business through channel distribution, local original equipment manufacturers and multinational corporations (MNCs) in Malaysia.

“Prakash will also focus on driving strategic engagements with the government and ecosystem players as part of efforts to accelerate technology adoption in Malaysia, as well as spearhead market expansion strategies to grow local consumption,” it said.

Prakash said he was excited to be a part of Malaysia‘s growth story.

“With continued collaboration with our customers, government and business partners, I’m confident we’ll be able to significantly contribute towards Malaysia’s goal of becoming a high income, knowledge-based economy,” he said.

Ryaz Patel, outgoing Malaysia country manager, will assume the role of Asia-Pacific MNC sales director.

He will be responsible for continuing to raise information communication technology adoption across Asia-Pacific and increase the region’s role in new areas such as cloud computing.

Novell investors will get $6.10 a share, Attachmate, a software company owned by private-equity firms including Golden Gate Capital Corp., said today in a statement. That’s 9.1 percent more than Novell’s closing price on Nov. 19. Novell will also sell some intellectual-property assets to a group of technology companies led by Microsoft Corp. for $450 million.

The company, which has reported sales declines for three of the past four years, had trouble competing against larger rivals such as Microsoft, said Rich Williams, an analyst at Cross Research. Novell started looking at strategic alternatives including a sale after rejecting a $2 billion takeover offer in March from shareholder Elliott Associates LP as inadequate.

“Management had struggled over the last few years to grow the new businesses and that created an opportunity given all of the cash from the balance sheet for financial bidders,” said Livingston, New Jersey-based Williams, who rates Novell “hold” and doesn’t own the stock. “The financially oriented buyers are going to hold the company, reshape it to a degree and then in a few years, in a more attractive environment, bring the company public.”

Novell’s new products were too “underdeveloped” to attract other technology companies as bidders, making it a suitable target for financial buyers, Williams said. Seattle- based Attachmate, whose owners also include Francisco Partners and Thoma Bravo LLC, said Novell will complement a portfolio that includes other technology assets.

Not familiar with Attachmate? They bought NetIQ in 2006. NetIQ was popular earlier this decade for their AppManager product. They also – briefly – owned a product they acquired with the purchase in 2000 of Mission Critical Software, known as Operations Manager. AppManager, a systems and applications management offering, at that time was considered a more established and valuable product than AppManager. Rather than confuse their customer with two somewhat similar offerings, NetIQ decided to license the technology used in Operations Manager to Microsoft. That led to Microsoft Operations Manager 2000, a product now in its third release by Microsoft.

From a performance standpoint, the zEnterprise Mainframe is the most powerful commercial IBM system ever. It includes up to 96 of the world’s fastest, most powerful microprocessors, capable of executing more than 50 billion instructions per second.

The company will start by replacing 25,000 BlackBerry smartphones with the company’s own Venture Pro smartphone, the company’s latest Windows Phone 7 device. Dell will later give employees the option of using smartphones powered by Google Android.

Dell says it would save a significant amount of money by avoiding hefty BlackBerry Enterprise Server licenses, but the company at the same time would be operating at a less than optimal level on mobile security, and would forego the benefits of the seamless BlackBerry Messaging service.

A senior Dell employee at the company’s headquarters who commented on condition of anonymity said he was skeptical of the cost savings, and that not all people at the company welcomed the transition, citing the ease of use of the BlackBerry platform.

The announcement comes as the launch date nears for the debut of Windows Phone 7 smartphones.
